Electroless plated maghemite for three-dimensional magneto photonic crystals

Three-dimensional magneto photonic crystals (3D-MPCs) are promising material for manipulating light in 3D space. In this study, we fabricated 3D-MPC that is filling the air-gap of opal photonic crystal with magnetic material by electroless plating. The electroless plating is an attractive film-forming method which provides magnetic material films on various substrates in aqueous solution at 24-90 °C. As magnetic material for filling the air-gap, maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) film was plated in opal photonic crystal. The plated maghemite film showed a Faraday rotation of 0.6 deg./μm at 440 nm and significantly lower absorption than magnetite. The plated opal showed photonic band gap and magneto-optic response. Faraday rotation of the plated opal was enhanced at the band edge. The photonic band gap and the Faraday rotation spectra were changed as a function of incident angle of light. Electroless plating of maghemite could be promising technique for fabricating 3D-MPCs.

Magnetophotonic Response of Three-Dimensional Opals

Three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals (3D-MPCs) are being postulated as appropriate platforms to tailor the magneto-optical spectral response of magnetic materials and to incorporate this functionality in a new generation of optical devices. By infiltrating self-assembled inverse opal structures with monodisperse nickel nanoparticles we have fabricated 3D-MPCs that show a sizable enhancement of the magneto-optical signal at frequencies around the stop-band edges of the photonic crystals. We have established a proper methodology to disentangle the intrinsic magneto-optical spectra from the nonmagnetic optical activity of the 3D-MPCs. The results of the optical and magneto-optical characterization are consistent with a homogeneous magnetic infiltration of the opal structure that gives rise to both a red-shift of the optical bandgap and a modification of the magneto-optical spectral response due to photonic bandgap effects. The results of our investigation demonstrate the potential of 3D-MPCs fabricated following the approach outlined here and offer opportunities to adapt the magneto-optical spectral response at optical frequencies by appropriate design of the opal structure or magnetic field strength.

Nanostructured one-and three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals based on porous silicon and artificial opals

Nanostructured one-and three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals are produced by infiltration of yttrium-iron garnet with bismuth into photonic crystals based on porous silicon and artificial opals. The magnetic properties of the resulting structures are studied by generation of the magnetically induced second harmonics. The magnetic contrast of the second harmonics intensity in the spectral region of the photonic gap edge of the photonic crystal is 10–15%.

Fabrication and Optical Properties of Three-Dimensional Magnetophotonic Heterostructures

The vertical deposition technique and the RF-magnetron sputtering method were employed for fabrication of three-dimensional (3-D) magnetophotonic crystals, in which a bismuth-substituted yttrium-iron-garnet planar defect layer was sandwiched in between two opal thin films. Optical properties and structure of constitutive elements (opal thin films) were studied in detail. Magnetophotonic crystals based on yttrium-iron-garnet infiltrated opals: Magnetization-induced second-harmonic generation

Three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals (MPCs) based on artificial opals infiltrated by yttrium iron garnet (YIG) are fabricated and their structural, optical, and nonlinear optical properties are studied. The formation of the crystalline YIG inside the opal matrix is checked by x-ray analysis. Two templates are used for the infiltration by YIG: bare opals and those covered by a thin platinum film. Optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) technique is used to study the magnetization-induced nonlinear-optical properties of the composed MPCs. A high nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect in the SHG intensity is observed at the edge of the photonic band gap of the MPCs.

Fabrication and Properties of Self-organized Three-dimensional Magnetophotonic Crystals

In order to fabricate the three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals (3D-MPCs), we prepared the artificial opals composed by amorphous SiO2 spheres with diameter of 500 nm using gravitational sedimentation. These artificial opals had continuous net of voids between a-SiO2 spheres, which was filled with different type of magnetic materials. Characteristic properties of 3D-MPCs were studied by different experimental techniques. We found that magnetic and optical properties of opal-magnetic material composites retained the features of 3D-PC.

Magneto-Optical Properties of Three-Dimensional Magnetophotonic Crystals

Properties of three-dimensional magneto-photonic crystals based on artificial opals were studied by optical spectroscopy. We have investigated an influence of magnetic materials embedded into opal lattice on optical and magnetic properties of synthesized composites. It was shown that increase of volume fraction of magnetic material in opal lattice leads to decrease of transmissivity of synthesized composites. We measured Faraday rotation of opal-magnetite composites and found considerable changes in the Faraday rotation inside the (111) photonic bandgap.

Synthesis of ferrite on SiO2 spheres for three-dimensional magneto-photonic crystals

This article reports the preparation of submicrometric magnetic particles which are promising parts for fabrication of three-dimensional magneto-photonic crystals. In our experiments SiO2 spheres with diameter of about 260 nm were coated with Fe3O4 fine particles from an aqueous solution at room temperature. It is found that spheres coated with Fe3O4 fine particles with a diameter of about 20 nm are synthesized when the ratio of Fe3+/Fe2+ is in the range 50%–100% and the pH value is in the range 8–10.

We fabricated and experimentally investigated three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals (3D MPCs) based on artificial opals. Opal samples with three-dimensional dielectric lattices were impregnated with different types of magnetic material. Magnetic and structural properties of 3D MPCs were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometer. We have shown that magnetic materials synthesized in voids of opal lattices and the composites obtained have typical magnetic properties.

Optical properties of three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals based on artificial opals

We have investigated an influence of magnetic materials embedded into opal lattices on transmissivity of three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals. It was shown that increase of volume fraction of magnetite in the opal lattice leads to a dramatic decrease of transmitted light intensity in the visible region. Opal-dysprosium gallium garnet composites exhibit a broadening and shifting of the (111) photonic band gap with an increase of volume fraction of garnet. We also found considerable changes in the Faraday rotation inside the (111) photonic bandgap of an opal-magnetite magnetophotonic crystal. visible light: they can diffract light selectively in three-dimensional space and split a light beam into several beams. In comparison with known three-dimensional photonic crystals, we consider three-dimensional MPCs as more effective because their photonic properties are sensitive to magnetic and electric fields and they have the potential for use in a variety of optoelectronic devices.
