STUDY ON LITERACY NUMERACY TOWARDS STUDENTS’ LOGIC MATHEMATICS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Numeracy literacy and mathematical logical thinking have a significant relationship in mathematics learning. Therefore, the study of this literacy examines the relationship between literacy, numeracy, and the development of students' logical thinking in the domain of mathematics education. This research aims to delineate the impact of numeracy literacy and logical thinking in shaping students' abilities to understand and apply logical principles in the context of mathematics, given the fundamental importance of literacy and numeracy skills. In this study, a literature review is employed to examine the relationship between literacy, numeracy, and logical thinking in the context of mathematics. The methodology used involves data collection, review processes, and in-depth analysis of scholarly articles sourced from Google Scholar, JSTOR, and PubMed. A total of 105 articles were analysed and categorized into the contexts of literacy, numeracy, and logical thinking in the context of mathematics. The research findings indicate the complexity of the interrelationship between literacy, numeracy, and logical thinking in mathematics education. This research contributes to offering insights into numeracy literacy and logical thinking for educators, researchers, and policymakers interested in enhancing the quality of mathematics education.

Computational Thinking in Mathematics Education Across Five Nations

Computational Thinking (CT) has been declared as the basic literacy of the 21st century, as well as reading literacy and numeracy literacy. Awareness about the importance of ICT has been responded very well by various countries by including CT in the school curriculum. This study aimed to analyze the comparison of the integration of CT in mathematics education in 5 countries, namely China, Singapore, United Kingdom (UK), Canada and the United States of America (USA). This study used a systematic literature review method that was carried out with the PRISMA protocol. This study started from identifying the process, assessing, and interpreting all available research evidence. The design used is to summarize, review, and analyse 43 articles in the Scopus database that are very relevant to the research object. The results of the study found that, most research on the integration of CT in mathematics education had been conducted in the USA. The type of research conducted in China was dominated by quantitative research while in Canada and it tended to be qualitative. In China, UK, Canada and USA, most of the research was carried out at the Elementary School level, while in Singapore was carried out at the Junior High School level. This result implies valuable insights for policymakers and educators regarding effective strategies for integrating CT in mathematics learning.

Fostering Interest and Critical Thinking in Mathematics Education: The Role of Integrated Evaluation Based on Linktree Platform

Based on a survey conducted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the interest in learning among students in Indonesia is still relatively low, ranking 64th out of 120 countries. In 2007, the Global Institute reported that only 5% of students could solve high-level problem-solving tasks. This study aims to assess student responses, learning interests, and mathematical problem-solving skills following the implementation of Linktree. Linktree is an e-learning platform that offers ease in managing information despite being HTML-based. Moreover, it integrates seamlessly with various media, offers multiple tools, and presents customizable interfaces. The research methodology was quantitative, with a sample of 30 eighth-grade students from Junior high school. Data were collected through five mathematical problem-solving essay questions and questionnaires assessing student responses and learning interests post-Linktree usage. Findings revealed positive student responses towards Linktree, particularly in number patterns, with an average percentage of 84%, indicating excellent feedback. Post-Linktree usage, students exhibited an average percentage of 78% across four indicators of learning interest, classified as good. The students improved their mathematical problem-solving skills, with an average N-gain score of 0.64 and an N-gain percentage of 64.37%, categorized as moderately effective. Linktree's contribution to students' learning interest and mathematical problem-solving skills was significant, as evidenced by the hypothesis testing results, with a determination of 0.776 or 77.6% for learning interest and 0.629 or 62.9% for problem-solving skills. Advancing Computational Thinking in Mathematics Education: a Systematic Review of Indonesian Research Landscape

Computational Thinking (CT) has emerged as a crucial and foundational skill in the 21st century, capturing the attention of researchers across various domains, including mathematics education in Indonesia. This research identifies and analyzes trends, themes, focuses, and research findings on CT through mathematics learning in Indonesia. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) adheres to the PRISMA guidelines, encompassing three stages: search, selection, and data analysis. The search process on the Scopus database, utilizing queries aligned with the research objectives, yielded 31 articles related to CT and mathematics education authored by Indonesian researchers. Subsequent selection involved criteria such as research focus, study type, document availability, and intervention differences, resulting in 14 articles. Data analysis employed Bibliometrix and NVivo 14 Plus software. The findings reveal a significant increase in research on CT in mathematics education from Indonesian researchers over the past two years, with an annual growth rate of 5.74%. This publication landscape involves contributions from 39 authors affiliated with 16 higher education institutions in Indonesia. Researchers have delved into diverse themes, including the analysis of CT skill achievement, the development of CT-oriented instructional models and media, and the creation of assessment tools to measure CT skills. These findings underscore the broad relevance of CT in the realm of mathematics education. As a burgeoning field of study, numerous aspects of CT remain open for further research, development, and exploration, especially those related to mathematics. To enhance the impact and implementation of Computational Thinking (CT) within the context of Indonesian education, future research may consider investigating innovative pedagogical approaches, assessing the long-term impact of CT interventions, and exploring the potential integration of CT across various educational levels.

Systematic Review of Spatial Thinking in Mathematics Education

The objective of this study is to perform a comprehensive analysis of existing research on spatial thinking abilities using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). To achieve this, five search engines (Scopus, SpringerLink, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and ERIC) were utilized during various stages, including identification, screening, eligibility, inclusion, and data analysis. Adhering to the PRISMA reporting rules, a total of 22 articles were included, selected mainly from the sorted studies. The results of our research indicate that there were four studies conducted using a mixed method approach, while nine studies utilized a quantitative approach, and another nine focused on qualitative methods. The number of studies investigating spatial thinking has consistently increased over the years. The findings section revealed that the majority of studies on this subject were authored by researchers from the USA, followed by authors from Australia, Turkey, Israel, Germany, Spain, China, Slovakia, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

Trend Publication of Computational Thinking in Mathematics Education: Bibliometric Review

Computational thinking and mathematics are closely related, namely mathematics plays a role in overcoming challenges and understanding concepts in computational thinking, while computational thinking ultimately simplifies and abstracts situations by formulating and presenting problems in mathematical form. The purpose of this study is to identify trends and research patterns with the topic of computational thinking in mathematics education using bibliometric analysis. Data is obtained from the dimensions database which has been refined through 4 stages (identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion). The results showed that the peak of publications related to computational thinking in mathematics education research occurred in 2022. The Journal of Science of Education and Technology became the most influential journal with the most citations, namely 877 citations even though it only with 7 publications. The United States is the most influential country in this field because of the good number of publications, the number of citations is the highest of any other country. There are three research focuses related to computational thinking in mathematics education research on the dimensions database from 2013-2023, namely, 1) mathematics, study, teacher; 2) problem, child, learning; 3) student, steam, CT skill

The connections between citizenship education and mathematics education

The connections between citizenship education and mathematics education have been the focus of theoretical development and attention by educators interested in issues of justice, equity, power, criticality, and citizen engagement with societal issues, across schools, universities, and adult education levels. In this survey article, we contribute to new knowledge in the field by identifying and describing three interconnected layers of influence on the praxis of teaching and learning: (1) perspectives from citizenship education and mathematics education (e.g., kinds of citizenship, critical thinking in mathematics education); (2) institutional factors (e.g., policy, curricula, implementation within education systems); and (3) emerging influences (e.g., changing skill demands, innovations from communities of practice). In exploring the connections between citizenship education and mathematics education, we go beyond extant theory development and point to influences such as global disruptions, societal changes, systemic structures at the national and local levels, messaging in the media, and the role of teachers and learners. The holistic analysis of these influences enables identification of tensions and dilemmas, and issues of identity, autonomy, adoption, and systemic change. Together these point to multiple implications for educators, policy makers, and researchers aiming to enable informed and engaged citizens.

The concept of computational thinking in mathematics education

This article is part of an investigation that aimed to develop, from conceptual nexuses and assumptions of cultural-historical theory, the theoretical concept of computational thinking for its development in mathematics education. Therefore, a study of the logical-historical movement of the term “computational thinking” in mathematics education was carried out, seeking to explain how and under what conditions the term was used in academic and documental productions in Brazil. In summary, the results indicate that studies corresponding to computational thinking in mathematics education are still incipient in Brazil and, until then, there was no concept for this term in the area. Thus, this concept was developed in order to establish three conceptual nexuses: problem-solving, algebraic thinking, and algorithmic thinking, which are in constant motion as they are dialectical, historical, logical, and cultural.

Critical thinking in mathematics education: A bibliometric analysis

Mathematical critical thinking is one of the most important skills that students must possess. The ability to think critically in mathematics is an essential skill that can be developed through effective teaching practices and student engagement. This article presents the questions to be investigated regarding critical thinking using bibliometric analysis. Bibliometric analysis is a method used to analyze research articles related to a chosen topic. The data source for this analysis is Scopus. The search was filtered by subject area, document type, language, and publication year. According to the results from Scopus, a total of 148 documents related to mathematical critical thinking were obtained from 2019 until May 2023. Based on the co-occurrence analysis of authors' keywords, besides 'critical thinking' and 'critical thinking skills', 'secondary school' and 'secondary education' appeared most frequently, with 6 occurrences. These trends in the number of articles can provide insights into the research interests in this field.

School and Community Practices of Computational Thinking in Mathematics Education through Diverse Perspectives

In the 21st century, computational thinking (CT) has emerged as a fundamental skill. Building on this momentum and recognizing the importance of exploring the use of computational thinking (CT) concepts and tools in teaching and learning, this study conducted a qualitative content analysis to investigate online resources for school and community outreach practices related to integrating CT and coding into mathematics education. The data set was selected from sample websites hosting a community of practice and interpreted through Kafai et al.’s (2020) framings of CT and a combination of three theories of learning and teaching (i.e., constructionism, social constructivism, and critical literacy). The study found that in mathematics, more attention is given to the cognitive approach of CT, which focuses on acquiring CT skills and concepts, rather than the situated approach that emphasizes participation during learning. Additionally, there is not enough emphasis on the critical framing of CT, which examines how learning reflects values and power structures. The study’s significance is grounded in enhancing the perspectives of researchers, educators, and policymakers by providing insights into the wide affordances of CT which meet and exceed the expectations of curriculum content and skills. In light of the recent attention paid to adding coding to the new mathematics curriculum, this study contributes to the literature, practice, and curriculum development on the integration of CT into school mathematics and serves as a basis for future research in the field.

Shifting the ways prospective teachers frame and notice student mathematical thinking: from deficits to strengths

Noticing the strengths in students’ mathematical thinking is a critical skill that teachers need to develop, but it can be challenging due to the prevalence of deficit-based thinking in mathematics education. To address this challenge, a teacher education course was designed to encourage prospective teachers to engage in critical reflection on their own and others’ framings of students’ thinking and shift their focus towards noticing students’ strengths. The study analyzed written responses from the prospective teachers, collected at the beginning and end of the course, to investigate their framing and noticing of students’ mathematical thinking. The analysis focused on the aspects of students’ thinking that the prospective teachers paid attention to, the stances they took when interpreting students’ thinking, and the instructional moves they proposed in response to their thinking. Furthermore, the study established a spectrum of deficit-based and strength-based framings on students’ mathematical thinking. This spectrum allowed for the identification of each participant’s written noticing responses within a range of possibilities, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the changes in teachers’ framing and noticing of students’ thinking over time.

A Critical Case Study on the Implementation of Computational Thinking in Mathematics Education

Abstract We report the critical case of an expert teacher, with whom we codesigned, implemented and discussed an innovation consisting of a task addressing a dual learning goals that uses block programming in a geometry lesson for her sixth-grade class. We analyse the case focusing on three sub-processes of implementation. First, the teacher constructs agency over both the structure and content of the innovation, illustrated by altering the sequencing within the task and adding of an open-ended activity. Second, her practice changes to adapt the innovation by bringing her expertise in programming and mathematics teaching to guide the solution of one hybrid task. Third, the innovation is adapted to accommodate her pedagogical approach and push for appealing to students’ personal interests. Despite the realisation of these sub-processes, the outcomes of the realised innovation were not necessarily positive, implying a need for an integrated — not compound — expertise in computational and mathematics teaching. A Systematics Literature Review of Computational Thinking in Mathematics Education: Benefits and Challenges

<span lang="IN">Computational thinking (CT) is a leading skill that must be possessed by students and is believed to be one of the keys to future success in a digital society. These skills are often associated with computer science but are now starting to be integrated with other fields of science, including learning mathematics. This literature review aims to study the benefits and challenges of computational thinking (CT) in learning mathematics. This literature review analyzes six references from the Scopus database based on predetermined keywords. Furthermore, content analysis was conducted to see the advantages and challenges of implementing CT in mathematics classes. Based on a literature review, there are several benefits of computational thinking in mathematics class, one of which is that CT improves student performance in learning mathematics; through CT skills, namely generalization and algorithmic thinking, it can help students solve computational problems well, learning that involves CT has the potential to have a positive influence on higher-level thinking skills (logic, algorithmic, and problem-solving views), as well as helping students solve real problems that he found. However, several challenges need to be faced, including the need to pay attention to the duration of learning to improve CT skills, the need for resource readiness which includes teacher competence, teaching materials, and assessment instruments, and teachers need to prepare and design didactic sequences. Improving Student’s Critical Thinking Skills in Mathematics Education: A Systematic Literature Review

Improving students' critical thinking skills is the goal of 21st-century learning. Therefore, this Systematic Literature Review (SLR) aims to find the techniques for improving students' critical thinking skills, especially in mathematics education. Data collection was obtained from scopus database. 24 publications published between the years 2018 to 2022 were retrieved for further analysis. Various tools were employed, they are; Microsoft excel and VostViewer. The result of the analysis showed that the techniques used to improve critical thinking skills include teaching methods, teaching materials, robotic coding activities, teacher attitudes, and the Olympics. The teaching method mostly used to improve critical thinking in mathematics education which is popularly used is Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) approach. This literature review is intended to help educators better understand learning tools to enhance students' critical thinking skills. This can make the mathematics learning process more creative and meaningful.

Geometry in Art? Scenes of a Colonisation of the Look and the Thinking in Mathematics Education

Background: Wouldn’t the transformations of artworks over time be the most convincing record of how geometry was historically practised and transformed? Now, it seems that research on geometry, whether as a theory or a school subject, leads us to a no less important problem linked to its effects and modulations on subjectivity. In mathematics education, one sees the agency of art for a very specific purpose: learning geometry through art. However, geometry is not just a set of theorems, concepts, and forms to be apprehended; it is also a device that, imprinted on our thinking, makes us talk about the world and its things. That is, it participates in the game of relations of power, knowledge, being, life, and nature, producing truths reiterated and subordinated by the ways of looking, thinking, and representing. Objectives: This article aims to analyse aspects of the relationship between geometry and art that put into practice a colonial matrix of power in mathematics education. Design: To do so, some scenes are presented, such as body-scene, space-scene, and nature-scene, considering geometry and art in its historical and educational forms. Setting and Participants: It is supported by art, art history, and research that articulates art and geometry. Data collection and analysis: Examples of the use of geometry in art are raised, analysing, through visuality, the functioning of a practice that produces and reproduces the presence and effects of the coloniality of power, knowledge, and being. Results: A geometrised fictional reality is revealed and conditioned by the ways of looking, thinking, and representing, in which geometry, operated with art, conforms and puts into practice a colonial thought, fostering the destabilisation of power and knowledge relations. Conclusions: Finally, the question is: Are we creating in our educational practices possibilities of deterritorialisations, lines of flight, decoloniality, to venture with other attitudes within the disciplinary devices in mathematics education? Therefore, it is necessary to think more about the truths put forward than to affirm them: for a new ethical, aesthetic, and political ethos in mathematics education.

Computational thinking in mathematics education: A systematic review

As a research area, computational thinking (CT) has gotten increased attention in mathematics education in the last decade. A study identifying patterns in CT research would be essential in understanding the technique for developing CT in mathematics and guiding future research attempts. As a result, the goal of this systematic literature review is to look at the learning methods promoting CT in mathematics lessons. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses standards were utilised to guarantee that this study was done systematically. The result shows that even though there are various types of learning tools that are most commonly used, the coding programming tool and robotic activities tool are the most user-friendly methods for encouraging CT in mathematics education. This literature review is intended to provide educators with a better understanding of learning tools in order to enhance CT, which may help transform education into something more creative and meaningful.

DESIGN THINKING IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Design Thinking is a knowledge as a thriving innovation practice and an approach to creative problem solving. The main purpose of this study is to review existing studies which are related to the Design Thinking in Mathematics Education for primary school. The search terms were used by inserting the suitable keywords based on the main topic such as "design thinking", "mathematics education", "mathematics", "primary school" and "elementary school". Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted to gain information for better understanding regarding our topic. This SLR was performed through two search engines which were SpringerLink and Scopus. In reporting this study, the PRISMA guidelines were followed. We identified and screened 1123 articles published between 2017 until 2021 in SpringerLink and Scopus. After elimination of duplicates and non-relevant topics, there were 23 articles remained based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The limited number of studies on the main topic as design thinking for primary school caused the small numbers of articles were selected. This is because there are many articles about teachers and post-graduate. Our findings indicated that the year of 2021 was mostly research conducted, followed by the year of 2020, 2019 and 2017 meanwhile there is no research conducted in 2018. Concerning the geographical distribution of the authors, the findings indicated that the predominant authors that developing the design thinking were in Germany, Australia, USA, Singapore and Switzerland, and only a few research conducted in Hong Kong, Sweden, Cyprus, Israel, Turkey, UK, Spain, Canada, Netherlands, Malaysia, and mixed countries. From the results, we can see that this design thinking should be practiced by teachers in their teaching regardless of whether it is mathematics or any other subject. In conclusion, design thinking among the students, especially primary school students nowadays, is indispensable to ensure that our country is always moving forward in the era of globalization.

Mathematical creative thinking ability in online learning during the Covid-19 Pandemic: A systematic review

As a result of the increased focus on creative mathematical thinking in mathematics education during the covid-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the need to investigate how to assess mathematical creative thinking skills in online learning environments. As a result, a systematic review was carried out to determine how mathematical creative thinking has been evaluated in the literature. We examined 124 journal articles from SCOPUS, ELSEVIER, WoS, ERIC, and SAGE to analyze specific MCT assessments from four perspectives: assessment of the familiar mathematics context, an indicator of measurement test, assessment of the unfamiliar mathematics context, and measurement test. We discovered that (a) the most familiar mathematics context for assessing mathematical creative thinking is based on students' curriculum according to their class level, and (b) indicators for assessing mathematical creative thinking frequently used open-ended questions to gather information. During this systematic review, we identified research gaps and potential future research topics to conceptualize and assess mathematical creative thinking skills while participating in online learning activities.
