Thermospheric nitric oxide energy budget during extreme geomagnetic storms: a comparative study

We selected three superstorms (disturbance storm time [Dst] index less than −350 nT) of 2003–04 to study the thermospheric energy budget with a particular emphasis on the thermospheric cooling emission by nitric oxide via a wavelength of 5.3 μm. The nitric oxide radiative emission data are obtained from the Sounding of the Atmosphere by Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument onboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite and the thermosphere ionosphere electrodynamic general circulation model (TIEGCM) simulation. Different energy sources for the magnetospheric energy injection and the thermospheric/ionospheric dissipation processes are calculated using empirical formulations, model simulations, and space-borne and ground-based measurements. The Joule heating rates calculated from different sources showed similar variations but significant differences in the magnitude. The nitric oxide cooling power is calculated by zonally and meridionally integrating the cooling flux in the altitude range of 100–250 km. The satellite observed that cooling flux responds faster to the energy input, as compared to the modeled results. The cooling power increases by an order of magnitude during storm time with maximum radiation observed during the recovery phase. Both the satellite-observed and modeled cooling powers show a strong positive correlation with the Joule heating power during the main phase of the storm. It is found that the maximum radiative power does not occur during the strongest storm, and it strongly depends on the duration of the main phase. The model simulation predicts a higher cooling power than that predicted by the observation. During a typical superstorm, on average, a cooling power of 1.87 × 105 GW exiting the thermosphere is estimated by the TIEGCM simulation. On average, it is about 40% higher than the satellite observation.

Statistical analysis on orographic atmospheric gravity wave and sporadic E layer

In this study, we present the statistical features of gravity wave (GW) and sporadic E layer (ES) by using the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) data aboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite and Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) radio occulation measurements during 2007–2018. Statistical analysis of occurrences of GW and ES shows that daytime GW and ES are frequently observed on the eastern sides of the Tibetan plateau during summer, while less consistency between nighttime GW and ES occurrences was presented in our observations. The concurrence of GW and ES shows that nearly 60% ES occurred simultaneously with local strong GW occurrence. These results provide observational evidence suggesting that the effect of strong GW activities is significant in the generation of ES.

Responses of Mesosphere Temperature to the Geomagnetic Storms on 8 and 15 September 2003

AbstractThe impact of geomagnetic storms on the mesosphere temperature has been controversial and lacks direct observational evidence. The intricate chemical and physical processes in the mesosphere, combined with the scarcity of observations, pose challenges to achieving a thorough comprehension of storm‐induced turbulences in this region. Currently, some investigations have characterized temperature responses during geomagnetic storms and the focus has largely been on changes above mesopause (∼90 km). In this work, the responses of temperature in the mesosphere (75–95 km) to the storms on September 8 and 15, 2003 and its causes are studied using observations from the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument onboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite. It is found that (a) temperature responses for the moderate storm on September 15 manifest as increases within the latitude range of 80°S to 65°S, with peak values decreasing from approximately 15 K to around 7 K as latitude decreases, while for the minor strom of September 8 temperature changes only occur at ∼80°S with peaks of 7 K and −10 K, (b) the temperature responses can be transmitted down to 76–81 km, depending on the latitude and storm magnitude, and (c) there are significant fluctuations in both ozone (exceed 45%) and atomic oxygen (exceed 90%) after storm onset, highly correlated with temperature temporal and spatial variations. We suggest that the increases in ozone caused by the increases in atomic oxygen concentrations are the major contributor to rising temperature.

Enhanced response of thermospheric cooling emission to negative pressure pulse

Nitric oxide (NO) emission via 5.3 µm wavelength plays dominant role in regulating the thermospheric temperature due to thermostat nature. The response of NO 5.3 mm emission to the negative pressure impulse during November 06–09, 2010 is studied by using Sounding of Atmosphere by Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) observations onboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite and model simulations. The TIMED/SABER satellite observations demonstrate a significant enhancement in the high latitude region. The Open Geospace General Circulation Model (OpenGGCM), Weimer model simulations and Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment measurements exhibit intensification and equatorward expansion of the field-aligned-currents (FACs) post-negative pressure impulse period due to the expansion of the dayside magnetosphere. The enhanced FACs drive precipitation of low energy particle flux and Joule heating rate affecting whole magnetosphere–ionosphere–thermosphere system. Our study based on electric fields and conductivity derived from the EISCAT Tromsø\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$${\\o }$$\\end{document} radar and TIEGCM simulation suggests that the enhanced Joule heating rate and the particle precipitations prompt the increase in NO cooling emission.

Response Time of Joule Heating Rate and Nitric Oxide Cooling Emission During Geomagnetic Storms: Correlated Ground‐Based and Satellite Observations

AbstractJoule heating is the primary source of the high latitude thermospheric energy dissipation during geomagnetic storm period. The nitric oxide (NO) emission at 5.3 μm accounts for the majority of Joule heating energy due to its radiative nature. It is the dominating cooling agent above 100 km that effectively regulates the thermospheric temperature. We studied the relationship between the response time of NO cooling emission and Joule heating rate during geomagnetic storm periods by using the NO emission observations by Sounding of Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) onboard NASA’s Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite and the Joule heating rate measured by the European incoherent scatter (EISCAT) radar over Tromsø (geographic:69.59°N, 19.22°E), Norway, and the thermosphere‐ionosphere‐electrodynamics general circulation model (TIEGCM) simulation. We selected seven geomagnetic storms during which there were continuous measurements of the Pederson conductivity and electric fields when the TIMED/SABER satellite was in the northview mode. The TIEGCM gives a fair description of NO cooling. However, it was found that the Joule heating rates obtained with the TIEGCM often do not show good agreement with those from EISCAT observations. The Joule heating rate peaks with 3–7 hr of storm' onset. The NO cooling flux takes longer time to respond to the energy input during storm period. The fastest response of the NO cooling emission to the Joule heating rate is found during the strongest storm. The weakest storm does not have the longest response time. No correlation between the response time of NO cooling flux with respect to the Joule heating rate and storm’s intensity was observed.

Retrieval of Thermospheric O and N2 Densities From ICON EUV

AbstractAs activity in Earth orbit continues to grow, it is important to characterize the environment of near‐Earth space. One means of remotely sensing lower thermospheric neutrals is by measurement of O and N2 density through the observation of far‐ultraviolet (FUV) airglow of atomic oxygen at 135.6 nm and the N2 Lyman‐Birge‐Hopfield (LBH) bands (~130–180 nm), as has been done on the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON), Global‐scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD), and Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) missions. This technique is not without limitations, however, as the FUV measurements suffer from contamination by ionospheric emissions at low latitudes and auroral emissions excited by precipitating energetic electrons and protons at high latitudes. Previous work has shown the potential for making measurements of O and N2 density in the lower‐middle thermosphere using observations of extreme‐ultraviolet (EUV) airglow. This measurement approach has a potential advantage in that it does not have an inherent ionospheric emission that must be accounted for. Additionally, these emissions are primarily excited directly by solar UV rather than electron impact and thus have the potential to enable expansion of neutral density observations into the auroral zone and polar cap where the FUV measurement cannot be applied. This article demonstrates a new approach and algorithm designed to retrieve thermospheric O and N2 density from 150 to 400 km using measurements from the ICON EUV instrument. The retrieval results throughout 2020 are summarized and compared to measurements from ICON FUV, GOLD, and SWARM.

Retrieval of Rotational Temperatures From the Arecibo Observatory Ebert‐Fastie Spectrometer and Their Inter‐Comparison With Co‐Located K‐Lidar and SABER Measurements

AbstractRotational temperatures in the Mesosphere‐Lower Thermosphere region are estimated by utilizing the OH(6,2) Meinel band nightglow data obtained with an Ebert‐Fastie spectrometer (EFS) operated at Arecibo Observatory (AO), Puerto Rico (18.35°N, 66.75°W) during February‐April 2005. To validate the estimated rotational temperatures, a comparison with temperatures obtained from a co‐located Potassium Temperature Lidar (K‐Lidar) and overhead passes of the Sounding of the Atmosphere by Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument onboard NASA's Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite is performed. Two types of weighting functions are applied to the K‐Lidar temperature profiles to compare them with EFS temperatures. The first type has a fixed peak altitude and a fixed full width at half maximum (FWHM) for the whole night. In the second type, the peak altitude and FWHM vary with the local time. SABER measurements are utilized to estimate the OH(6,2) band peak altitudes and FWHMs as a function of local time and considerable temporal variations are observed in both the parameters. The average temperature differences between the EFS and K‐Lidar obtained with both types of weighting functions are comparable with previously published results from different latitude‐longitude sectors. We found that the temperature comparison improves when the time‐varying weighting functions are considered. Comparison between EFS, K‐Lidar, and SABER temperatures reveal that on average, SABER temperatures are lower than the other two instruments and K‐Lidar temperatures compare better with SABER in comparison to EFS. Such a detailed study using the AO EFS data has not been carried out previously.

On the response of the mesopause region over an Indian Antarctic station Bharati to the geomagnetic storm of 23–24 March 2023

We report, in this work, the changes in the thermal structure of the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) region over an Indian Antarctic station Bharati (69.4° S, 76.2° E, CGM coordinates 75° S, 97° E) brought about by an intense geomagnetic storm of 23–24 March 2023 (Dst ∼ −155 nT). We use the temperature and OH airglow measurements of the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument onboard NASA's Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) mission satellite to compare the thermal field of the MLT region on these disturbed days with the neighbouring quietest days of 27–28 March. Such comparison reveals both warming and cooling in the MLT region associated with the storm. An extension of this comparative study in the latitude region located poleward of Bharati also shows similar behavior of the MLT region during this geomagnetic storm. Overall, this study reveals the maximum temperature enhancement of ∼39–43 K to occur at around 99 km, a significant warming of ∼4–43 K in 95–105 km, and a decrease of ∼12–16 K in 80–87 km. While the enhancement of temperature in 95–105 km appears to be a consequence of the auroral heating associated with this storm; we are unable to account for the cooling below based on existing theories. Present observation of the development of cooling underneath the region of temperature enhancement during the geomagnetic storm is rare and demands further investigation.

Nitric oxide cooling emission during geomagnetic storm: Case studies

The Nitric Oxide (NO) emission at 5.3 µm is the dominating thermospheric coolant in the altitude above ∼ 100 km. It effectively regulates the thermospheric temperature during space weather events. We studied the diurnal response of the Nitric Oxide at 5.3 µm emission to the geomagnetic storms of different intensities by using the NO emission data from the Sounding of Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument onboard NASA’s Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite. We selected eight CME-driven geomagnetic storms with |SYM-H| index ranging from 0 to 500 nT. One of the storms that occurred during 19–22 November 2003 is investigated in details. Other events are used for comparison. The NO flux and the NO power during different phases of the geomagnetic storms are calculated with 24 h-time bins from the storm’s onset. The NO cooling and the cooling power are always higher during the daytime. Although the NO cooling flux and the cooling power increase with the storm intensity, they are not always higher during the stronger storms.

Sounding of the Atmosphere Using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER): Instrument and Science Measurement Description

AbstractSABER (Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry) is a 10‐channel infrared radiometer that is one of four instruments on the NASA TIMED (Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics) satellite mission to study the structure, energetics, chemistry, and dynamics of the Earth's mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Each of the ten SABER channels has a unique filter over its detector. The filter passes infrared radiation within a defined spectral region that optimizes the ability to derive temperature and constituent concentrations from the infrared radiance measurements. The TIMED spacecraft was launched into a 625 km circular polar orbit (74.1° inclination) via a Boeing Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base on 7 December 2001. SABER continues to operate nominally and collect data routinely as it has for over 21 years. Nearly 2,200 peer‐reviewed journal articles have been published worldwide using SABER data. A list of these articles is included in Supporting Information S1 accompanying this paper. This paper presents a detailed technical description of the SABER instrument including major subsystems of the instrument and technical performance parameters. This paper comprehensively describes the instrument and its components and provides final instrument design and performance parameters. The motivation for this paper is to document this information permanently for future reference. The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) of Utah State University designed, fabricated, and calibrated the SABER instrument in close collaboration with NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton University, and Global Atmospheric Technologies and Science (GATS).

Comprehensive analysis of the ionospheric response to the largest geomagnetic storms from solar cycle 24 over Europe

A multi-instrumental analysis of the meridional ionospheric response is presented over Europe during the two largest ICME-driven geomagnetic storms of solar cycle #24 maximum. Data from 5 European digisonde stations, ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System, Total Electron Content (GNSS TEC), the ratio of the TEC difference (rTEC), as well as Swarm and Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere, Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite observations have been used for the investigation of selected intervals (11–17 November, 2012, and 16–25 March, 2015). The storm evolution is monitored by digisonde foF2 critical frequency (related to the maximum electron density of F2-layer) and GNSS TEC data. Moreover, Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) measurements from the TIMED satellite are used to investigate the changes in the thermospheric O/N2 ratio. Our main focus was on the main phase of the geomagnetic storms, when during the nighttime hours extremely depleted plasma was detected. The extreme depletion is observed in foF2, TEC and rTEC, which is found to be directly connected to the equatorward motion of the midlatitude ionospheric trough (MIT) on the nightside. We demonstrate a method (beside the existing ones) which allows the monitoring of the storm-time evolution of the disturbances (e.g., MIT, SAPS, SED) in the thermosphere-ionosphere-plasmasphere system by the combined analysis of the worldwide digisonde system data (with the drift measurements and the ionospheric layer parameters with 5–15 min cadence), with rTEC and GNSS TEC data, and with the satellite data like Swarm, TIMED/GUVI.

Long-term variabilities in thermal structure, CO2 concentration and associated cooling rates in the Earth's middle atmosphere: Observations and model simulations

Enhanced anthropogenic activities in the recent decades are ensuing in the large-scale accumulation of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the Earth's atmosphere. CO2 in the atmosphere induces warming in the troposphere and cooling in the middle atmosphere. A systematic analysis of the middle atmospheric thermal structure and its variability at decadal scale is need of the hour to perceive the consequences of increased anthropogenic activity in totality. In this regard, long-term variations of temperature, CO2 concentration and associated cooling rates in the middle and upper atmosphere (30–110 km) are investigated using Sounding of Atmosphere by Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) on board Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite observations during 2002–2021 and Specified Dynamics-Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (SD-WACCM) simulations during 2002–2017 over 50 N–50 S latitudes. The results show that CO2 concentration measured by SABER is significantly underestimated by the WACCM simulations, especially above 90 km altitude. In order to find the long-term trends in each variable, Multivariate Linear Regression (MLR) technique is employed to the residual data obtained after removing seasonal variations. SABER observations show decreasing trend in temperature with a rate of 0.5–2.5 K/decade and an increase in CO2 vmr of 16–18 ppmv/decade. The effect of Solar Cycle, QBO and ENSO on each of the variables is also investigated. The significance of the present study lies in evaluating the SD-WACCM simulations of long-term variabilities in the thermal structure, CO2 vmr and associated cooling rates using two decades of observations.

Preseismic Perturbations and their Inhomogeneity as Computed from Ground- and Space-Based Investigation during the 2016 Fukushima Earthquake

We present the atmospheric anomalies instigated through seismogenic sources by a multichannel observation using ground- and satellite-based systems. This study emphasizes the seismic event which happened on the east coast of Japan, near the Fukushima Prefecture on November 21, 2016 (in UTC), with a magnitude of 6.9 and a depth of 11.4 km. We mainly focus on the atmospheric and ionospheric irregularities via acoustic and electromagnetic channels originating from earthquakes in the process of the lithosphere, atmosphere, and ionospheric coupling (LAIC) mechanism. In the acoustic channel, we study the seismogenic atmospheric gravity wave (AGW) which perturbs the local lower atmosphere. The observation of nighttime fluctuations in the very low frequency (VLF) signals and total electron content (TEC) is used to investigate the atmospheric perturbation through the electromagnetic channel. For the ground-based observations, a VLF signal network consisting of 5 receivers in Japan is used to study by recording the VLF amplitude transmitted from the Japanese transmitter JJI (22.2 kHz). VLF nighttime fluctuation is used to check the unusualities due to the earthquake. Preseismic wavelike structures having periods of AGW are observed in the nighttime signal. Direct investigation of such AGWs is done by computing the potential energy related to AGW from the sounding of the atmosphere using broadband emission radiometry (SABER) temperature profiles mounted on the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite. Ionospheric TEC inspection is done by using a ground-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver from the International GNSS Survey (IGS) station MIZU in Japan and observing anomalies in diurnal TEC around 6 and 10 days prior to the earthquake. We also obtain the wavelike structure of AGW from the small-scale fluctuation of TEC using wavelet analysis. All the parameters are found to be preseismic for this earthquake; the acoustics channel gives more consistent outcomes than the electromagnetic channel.

Decadal Quasi-2-Day Wave Observations in the Equatorial Mesopause Region by a Meteor Radar over Kototabang (0.2°S, 100.3°E) and TIMED/TIDI and Comparison with Quasi-2-Day Wave Observations at Mid-Latitudes

We studied the characteristics of quasi-two-day wave (QTDW) using the meridional wind in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) obtained from a meteor radar over Kototabang (KB, 0.2°S, 100.3°E) from 2003 to 2012. Atmospheric oscillations have a crucial impact on atmospheric dynamics, which contributes to more accurate space weather forecasting, thus providing a more secure space environment for human space exploration activities such as remote sensing and satellite navigation. QTDWs are typical atmospheric oscillations in the upper stratosphere, mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The occurrence time, amplitudes, periods and vertical wavelengths of QTDW events are analyzed statistically. Data obtained from the TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI), which can measure wind and temperature and is onboard the Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite, are used to analyze the global distribution and spatial structure of QTDWs with different zonal wavenumbers. The characteristics of the QTDWs over KB are compared with the QTDWs at the middle latitudes using the meridional wind data from a meteor radar over Wuhan (114.4°E, 30.6°N), Beijing (116.5°E, 39.9°N) and Mohe (121.1°E, 50.1°N). The amplitudes of the QTDW and spectral analysis are calculated by the least squares fitting method. Our results demonstrate that QTDWs are present almost all year around over KB. The occurrence time, amplitudes, periods and vertical wavelengths of QTDW events with different zonal wavenumbers are determined in this study. We also find that the statistical characteristics of the QTDWs in KB are different from those at middle latitudes. The westward zonal wavenumber −4 (W4) events gradually increase with increasing latitude, whereas westward zonal wavenumbers −1, −2, and −3 (W1, W2 and W3, respectively) events all decrease with increasing latitude.

Comparison of TIDI Line of Sight Winds With ICON-MIGHTI Measurements.

The Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite has been making observations of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region for two decades. The TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI) measures the neutral winds using four orthogonal telescopes. In this study, the line of sight (LOS) winds from individual telescopes are compared to the measurements from the Ionospheric Connection Explorer's (ICON's) Michelson Interferometer for Global High-resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) instrument from 90 to 100km altitude during 2020. With the MIGHTI vector winds projected onto the LOS direction of each TIDI telescope, coincidences of the two data sets are found. The four telescopes perform differently and the performance depends on the satellite configuration and local solar zenith angle. Measurements from the coldside telescopes, Telescope 1 (Tel1) and Telescope 2 (Tel2), are better correlated with the MIGHTI winds in general with Tel2 having higher correlation coefficients across all conditions. The performance of Tel1 is comparable to that of Tel2 during backward flight while showing systematic errors larger than the average wind speeds during forward flight. The warmside LOS winds from Telescope 3 (Tel3) and Telescope 4 (Tel4) vary widely in magnitude, especially on the nightside. Compared with MIGHTI winds, the Tel4 measurements have the weakest correlation, while the Tel3 performance is comparable to that of the coldside telescopes during the ascending phase but deteriorates during the descending phase. Based on the TIDI/MIGHTI comparisons, figures of merit are generated to quantify the quality of measurements from individual telescopes in different configurations.

Thermospheric Conditions Associated With the Loss of 40 Starlink Satellites

AbstractWe analyzed far ultraviolet data from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)/Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) and Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED)/Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) and found significant changes in the thermospheric density and composition during the 3–5 February 2022 storm when 40 Starlink satellites started to re‐enter the atmosphere associated with increased neutral drag at an altitude around 210 km. The standard NRLMSISE‐00 model predicts only ∼5% increase in neutral density at 210 km. TIMED/GUVI observations showed a clear increase in the thermospheric N2/O column density ratio and an increase in the nitric oxide (NO) column density, indicating high thermospheric density, and temperature. DMSP SSUSI 130.4 nm limb data showed a clear increase in neutral density in the low latitude region (−30°–30°). On the duskside (17:32 LT), the density increase (compared to the pre‐storm density) is around 11%–18% at 210 km and around 18%–26% at 520 km. On the dawn‐side (05:19 LT), the density increase is more significant, 40%–59% at 210 km and ∼300% at 520 km. There are a few reasons for the dawn‐dusk asymmetry in the relative density increase: (a) the pre‐storm background density or heat capacity is lower on the dawn‐side than that on the duskside, (b) stronger auroral heating was observed on the dawnside based on analysis of auroral images, (c) the thermosphere density enhancement partially recovered when the disturbance co‐rotated with the Earth from dawn to dusk side due to enhanced infrared cooling by NO. Note that the neutral density increase is expected to be much higher at high latitudes where the neutral disturbances are initiated.

Seasonal Variation of Thermospheric Composition Observed by NASA GOLD.

We examine characteristics of the seasonal variation of thermospheric composition using column number density ratio ∑O/N 2 observed by the NASA Global Observations of Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission from low‐mid to mid‐high latitudes. We also use ∑O/N 2 derived from the Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) limb measurements onboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite and estimated by the NRLMSISE‐00 empirical model to aid our investigation. We found that the ∑O/N 2 seasonal variation is hemispherically asymmetric: in the southern hemisphere, it exhibits the well‐known annual and semiannual pattern, with highs near the equinoxes, and primary and secondary lows near the solstices. In the northern hemisphere, it is dominated by an annual variation, with a minor semiannual component with the highs shifting toward the wintertime. We also found that the durations of the December and June solstice seasons in terms of ∑O/N 2 are highly variable with longitude. Our hypothesis is that ion‐neutral collisional heating in the equatorial ionization anomaly region, ion drag, and auroral Joule heating play substantial roles in this longitudinal dependency. Finally, the rate of change in ∑O/N 2 from one solstice season to the other is dependent on latitude, with more dramatic changes at higher latitudes.

Global Middle-Atmosphere Response to Winter Stratospheric Variability in SABER and MLS Mean Temperature

Abstract Satellite observations of middle-atmosphere temperature are used to investigate the short-term global response to planetary wave activity in the winter stratosphere. The focus is on the relation between variations in the winter and summer hemispheres. The analysis uses observations from Thermosphere–Ionosphere–Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) for 2002–21 and Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) for 2004–21, and reanalysis temperatures and winds from MERRA-2 for 2002–21. We calculate temporal correlations of the Eliassen–Palm flux divergence in the winter stratosphere with global temperature. Results show a robust perturbation extending to midlatitudes of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) stratosphere during Northern Hemisphere (NH) winter. An increase in wave forcing is followed by a decrease in temperatures over the depth of the stratosphere in the SH, peaking at a lag of 3 days. Summer mesospheric temperature perturbations of the opposite sign are seen in many winters. Comparable signals in the NH summer middle-atmosphere are present during some SH winters but are weaker and less consistent than those in the SH during NH winter. A diagnostic evaluation of the patterns of correlation, the mesospheric zonal winds, and the stability criteria suggests that the temperature perturbations in the midlatitude summer mesosphere are more closely associated with the summer stratosphere directly below than with the wave activity in the winter stratosphere. This suggests that the interhemispheric coupling in the stratosphere is driving or contributing to the coupling between the winter stratosphere and the summer mesosphere that has been reported in several investigations. Significance Statement There are many instances in which one part of the atmosphere is found to regularly respond to perturbations occurring in a distant region. In this study, we use observations to investigate one such pattern: temperature changes at high altitude (60–100 km) in the summer that follow dynamical changes near the winter pole at 40–60 km. Such analysis is useful to understand which physical processes contribute to the global connectivity and variability of the atmosphere.

Response of the Ionospheric TEC to SSW and Associated Geomagnetic Storm Over the American Low Latitudinal Sector

AbstractDuring the sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event in 2013, we investigated the American low latitude around 75°W. We used 12 Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, a pair of magnetometers, and the NASA Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite airglow instrument to unveil the total electron content (TEC), inferred vertical drift, and the changes in the neutral composition, respectively. A major SSW characterized the 2013 SSW event with the main phase (7–27 January 2013) overlapped by a minor geomagnetic storm (17 January 2013). The late morning inferred downward‐directed E X B drift did not support the varying equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) signature during the SSW onset (7 January 2013). The mid‐January (15–16 January 2013) witnessed enhancement in the varying inferred upward‐directed E X B drift at both hemispheres. On 17 January 2013, there were reductions in the varying inferred upward‐directed E X B drift at both hemispheres. Generally, the SSW effect on TEC around 15–16 January 2013 is more pronounced than the SSW onset. During the mid‐January (15–16 January 2013), the higher northern EIA crests are facilitated majorly by the SSW compared to the photo‐ionization that primarily enabled the southern crests. On 17 January 2013, the combined effect of photo‐ionization and SSW contribution was majorly responsible for the slight reduction in the northern crest. In the southern hemisphere, photo‐ionization played the lead role as the SSW, and the minor geomagnetic storm roles are secondary in enhancing the southern crest.

Significant Variations of Thermospheric Nitric Oxide Cooling during the Minor Geomagnetic Storm on 6 May 2015

Using observations by the SABER (Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry) instrument on board the TIMED (Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics) satellite and simulations by the TIEGCM (Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model), we investigate the daytime variations of thermospheric nitric oxide (NO) cooling during the geomagnetic storm on 6 May 2015. The geomagnetic storm was minor, as the minimum Dst was −28 nT, the maximum Kp was 5+ and the maximum AE was 1259 nT. However, significant enhancements of peak NO cooling rate and prominent decreases in the peak NO cooling altitude were observed from high latitudes to low latitudes in both hemispheres on the dayside by the SABER instrument. The model simulations underestimate the response of peak NO cooling and have no significant variation of the altitude of peak NO cooling rate on the dayside during this minor geomagnetic storm. By investigating the temporal and latitudinal variations of vertical NO cooling profiles inferred from SABER data, we suggest that the horizontal equatorward winds caused by the minor geomagnetic storm were unexpectedly strong and thus play an important role in inducing these significant daytime NO cooling variations.
