Enhancing thermal performance of phase change materials in building envelopes

AbstractPhase change material in conjunction with a passive latent heat thermal energy storage approach is a potentially effective way to solve the growing concerns about building energy usage. This research examines the thermal performance of building envelopes in Miskolc, Hungary. The factors impacting the thermal performance of phase change material integrated into the building envelope were assessed. The findings indicate that the enthalpy and melting temperature of the phase change material significantly impact the effectiveness of phase change material-based walls. It was determined the optimal location of the phase change material layer is possible. This determination is intricately related to the thermal properties of the phase change material and the prevailing environmental conditions.

Simulations of Cryogenic Line Chilldown with Advanced Subgrid Wall Boiling Models

A mesoscale model for boiling processes in water was adapted for cryogens and demonstrated for chilldown of propellant transfer lines in both liquid nitrogen and hydrogen. The subgrid boiling model accurately captures the contributions to heat transfer from the generation of bubble nuclei, growth, and interaction of the bubbles in the microlayer as well as quenching of the boiling surface following bubble departure. It was adapted for cryogenic fluids using thermodynamic scaling concepts, considering nondimensional pressures and temperatures that are scaled by the corresponding critical values for the fluid. The boiling model was demonstrated for line chilldown in liquid nitrogen. The predicted wall temperature at which quenching occurs was close to the test data for liquid nitrogen, while the slope of the temperature curve after quenching is initiated shows a steeper variation than the test data. Simulations were also performed for liquid hydrogen. Chilldown times in liquid hydrogen are much more rapid due to higher heat transfer in the film boiling regime, and accurately modeling the impact of turbulent heat transfer was found to be important. Furthermore, due to the much colder fluid temperatures in liquid hydrogen, it is critical to model the variable thermal properties of the solid material.

The influence of lattice anharmonicity on the thermal transport properties of two-dimensional MgF2

Abstract Graphene research has ignited interest in two-dimensional (2D) materials. In addition to their unique electronic, mechanical, and optical properties, 2D materials exhibit distinctive thermal transport characteristics. A profound understanding of the microscopic mechanisms underlying the thermal transport properties of 2D materials is crucial for applications in energy conversion and storage devices. However, current studies lack insights into the influence of higher-order lattice anharmonicity on the transport behavior of 2D materials. Thus, this paper focuses on the 2D 1T phase MgF2, analyzing its microscopic thermal transport properties through an anharmonic lattice dynamics approach. Our methodology comprehensively accounts for the effects of quartic anharmonicity and four-phonon scattering on the thermal transport properties of 2D materials.

Thermal Stress Analysis of Maxillary Dentures with Different Reinforcement Materials Under Occlusal Load Using Finite Element Method

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of fiber reinforcement materials on the magnitude of stresses in a critical part of the maxillary denture base under thermal and occlusal load. Thermal stress analyses of the models were carried out using the finite element method. The models consisted of bone, soft tissue, interface gap, and maxillary dentures with and without reinforcements. A concentrated occlusal load of 230 N was applied bilaterally on the molar teeth. A 36 °C reference and 0 °C, 36 °C, and 70 °C variable ambient temperatures were applied to the models. CrCo, unidirectional and woven carbon/epoxy, unidirectional and woven glass/epoxy, and unidirectional and woven Kevlar/epoxy were used as reinforcing materials in the maxillary denture base made of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate). Stress distributions on the maxillary denture’s midline and lateral line direction were evaluated. Maximum stresses in the incisal notch and the labial frenal notch of the maxillary denture were determined. Failure analysis of reinforcement materials used in maxillary dentures was carried out using the Tsai-Wu index criterion. The results obtained show that the thermal properties of reinforcement materials should be considered as an important criterion in their selection.

Analysis of Mechanical Properties and Thermal Conductivity of Thin-Ply Laminates in Ambient and Cryogenic Conditions

It is widely known that glass–epoxy laminates are renowned for their high stiffness, good thermal properties, and economic qualities. For this reason, composite materials find successful applications in various industrial sectors such as aerospace, astronautics, the storage sector, and energy. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanical and thermal properties of composite materials comprising two different types of epoxy resin and three different hardeners, both at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions. The samples were produced at IZOERG (Gliwice, Poland) using a laboratory hot-hydraulic-press technique. During cyclic loading–unloading tests, degradation up to a strain level of 0.6% was observed both at room temperature (RT) and at 77 K. For a glass-reinforced composite with YDPN resin (EP_1_1), the highest degradation was recorded at 18.84% at RT and 33.63% at 77 K. We have also investigated the temperature dependence of thermal conductivity for all samples in a wide temperature range down to 5 K. The thermal conductivity was found to be low and had a relative difference of up to 20% among the composites. The experimental results indicated that composites under cryogenic conditions exhibited less damage and were stiffer. It was confirmed that the choice of hardener significantly influenced both properties.

Evaluation into the effect of lignocellulosic biochar on the thermal properties of shape stable composite phase change materials

Biochar is suitable for preparing shape stable composite phase change materials (sscPCMs) due to the advantages of cost-effective, environmentally, and sustainability. However, the heat properties of biochar-based sscPCMs were not consistent. To investigate how different types of biochar influence the thermal properties of sscPCMs, three types of sscPCMs were successfully prepared using peanut shell biochar (PSC), poplar wood biochar (PWC), and corn straw biochar (CSC) as framework materials and combined with stearic acid (SA). A comprehensive analysis of the thermal properties of three sscPCMs was performed, taking into account thermal conductivity, phase change latent heat, encapsulation efficiency, crystallization rate, and energy storage efficiency. The study indicated that among the three types of sscPCMs, SA/PWC sscPCMs demonstrated excellent comprehensive performance. The phase change latent heat of SA/PWC reached 100.13 J/g, and the thermal conductivity was 0.38 W/mK. Compared to SA/PSC, the phase change latent heat of SA/PWC increased by 45.96 %, with only a 28.30 % reduction in thermal conductivity. In comparison to SA/CSC, the thermal conductivity of SA/PWC improved by 18.75 %, while the phase change latent heat decreased by only 14.02 %. In addition, the proportions of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin played a crucial role in determining the thermal properties of sscPCMs. This study clarified the mechanism by which biochar influences the thermal characteristic of sscPCMs, offering valuable insights for choosing biochar framework materials.

Rheology and Processing of High-Strength Liquid Crystal Polymer Reinforced Thermoplastic Composite Materials

Liquid crystal polymer (LCP) composites are presented as lightweight, high-strength, thermoplastic composites. Fumed silica (FS), carbon black (CB), carbon nanostructures (CNS), and boron nitride (BN) added to the polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) increased the viscosity ratio of the PPS to the LCP. PPS filled with 5 wt.% FS was used to optimize injection molding conditions and had a viscosity ratio ranging from 2 to 13. Increasing fill time to 5 s brought about the highest tensile strength of 99 MPa and modulus of 12.5 GPa, while the tool and melt temperatures imparted no significant effect. Mechanical and thermal properties of select LCP materials processed using molding conditions optimized for the experimental materials are presented. Mechanical properties in the crossflow direction were lower than in the flow direction, which could be overcome with tool design and placement of valve gates to tailor the flow patterns. BN filled composites increased the thermal conductivity to a value of 0.26 W/mK at 16 wt.% loading.

Effects of La2Ce2O7 on the phase composition, microstructure, wetting behaviour and corrosion resistance of magnesia refractory

The addition of rare earth oxides has a significant impact on the improvement of thermal properties of refractory materials. Magnesia refractory with La2Ce2O7 was prepared by high-temperature solid-phase synthetic sintering at 1873 K for 5h using fused magnesia as raw materials, CeO2 and La2O3 as addition, respectively. The effect of La2Ce2O7 on the phase composition, microstructure, apparent porosity, bulk density, wetting behaviour and corrosion resistance with steel of fused magnesia were investigated. When the content of La2Ce2O7 was 20wt%, the results showed that as-prepared samples from fused magnesia with an apparent porosity of 17.63% and a bulk density of 3.11g·cm-3 were obtained by high temperature solid-phase sintering reaction at 1873 K for 5h, respectively. Due to the addition of La2Ce2O7, and raw materials in the impurity phase CaO and SiO2 for the reaction, the generation of a small amount of CaLa4(SiO4)3O and La8.89Si6O25.9 high melting point phase, plugging the air holes, thus improving the bulk density of the fused magnesia and reduce its apparent porosity. The ability of steel corrosion of as-prepared samples from fused magnesia doped with La2Ce2O7 have better resistance than conventional fused magnesia, which the thickness of the corrosion layer was reduced by 42.1% compared to as-prepared samples without La2Ce2O7.

Investigation of Elaeocarpus ganitrus seed (EGs) powder as a sustainable composite biomaterial: Effects of particle size on the mechanical, frictional, and thermal properties for potential biomedical applications

This study explores the potential of Elaeocarpus ganitrus seed (EGs) powder as a sustainable composite biomaterial, focusing on its particle size effects on the mechanical, frictional, and thermal properties of composite materials for potential biomedical applications such as prosthetics and implants. Composite specimens were produced using the compression hot molding method, utilizing EG powder particles of varying sizes (120, 140, and 200-mesh sieving). The influence of EG powder particle size on key properties was systematically investigated. The findings reveal that reducing the particle size of EGs leads to a decrease in density and hardness of the composite, with the largest particle size (BP1) resulting in the highest density and hardness. Friction coefficient measurements indicated suitability for biomedical applications where surface interaction and wear resistance are critical, such as joint prosthetics. Thermal analysis showed that BP1 exhibited superior thermal stability, with a maximum decomposition temperature (Tmax) exceeding 375 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry identified significant differences in glass transition temperature (Tg) and crystallization temperature (Tc) across specimens. The composites demonstrated exceptional thermal performance, surpassing previous benchmarks for biomaterials in high-temperature environments. The mechanical and thermal characteristics of Specimen BP1—2.725 g/cm3 density, 74 Shore D hardness, 0.159 coefficient of friction, 93.3% total residual, 378.14 °C Tmax, 426.25 °C Tc, and 376.87 °C Tg—suggest its potential for biomedical applications requiring durability and thermal resilience, such as in orthopedic devices and tissue engineering scaffolds.

Size effect of typical hygrothermal properties test values for building insulation materials

Thermal and moisture properties of building insulation materials are crucial input parameters for analyzing thermal and moisture transfer phenomena in building environments. Accurate determination of these parameters under different conditions is essential for the correct application and assessment of materials and envelope structures. However, numerous factors influence thermal and moisture properties, and while extensive research has been conducted on this topic, the effects of specimen size on typical thermal and moisture property test values remain unclear. To address the issue of unreliable data caused by random specimen sizes in thermal and moisture property testing of building insulation materials, this study selects three materials—expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS), and foamed cement—as test subjects to explore the size effects on typical thermal and moisture property test values. The results indicate that specimen size significantly affects the test values for typical thermal and moisture properties, with only a few experiments showing negligible size effects for certain materials. For foamed cement, recommended specimen sizes for thermal conductivity testing using the guarded hot plate method and the transient plane source method are 300 × 300 × 30 mm and 50 × 50 × 30 mm, respectively. Except for equilibrium moisture absorption experiments, the weight of other moisture property tests is generally represented by thickness > planar dimensions.

Copper based high temperature heat storage macrocapsules with optimized inner cavity

The development of practical high temperature metallic phase change macrocapsules still faces difficulties, because metallic phase change materials undergo volume expansion during phase transformations, which can lead to outer shell rupture. When a core made of stacked metal powders is used, a cavity is eventually formed inside the capsule that acts as a cushion for volume expansion, thus reducing the risk of capsule rupture. However, the cavity will weaken the thermal storage capacity of the capsule, and in order to obtain a capsule with good thermal storage capacity and long-time cycling stability, it is necessary to find a suitable cavity volume of the capsule. In this paper, Cu powders are used as the core raw material, which are spherelized into millimeter level spheres, and the Cu powder spheres are isostatically pressed using an isostatic presser under different pressures to achieve the optimization of the cavity volume by reducing the gap between the powders. The high strength α-Al2O3 is selected as the shell, and sintering additives MgO and SiO2 are doped into the raw material, and the Cu@MgO-SiO2/Al2O3 capsules are prepared after two-step sintering treatment. The material properties and thermal storage properties of the capsules are investigated in detail, which have strong thermal storage properties, for example, in the temperature interval of 1000-1100 ℃, capsules with a core-shell structure (named as 9@1.5-100MPa, prepared with initial diameter of Cu core of 9mm, shell thickness of 1.5mm, and isostatic pressing under 100MPa to the core precursor) exhibit a high heat storage density of 222J/g and 841 MJ/m³. In addition, we conduct melting-solidification cycle tests, which confirms the excellent durability of the capsules. The comprehensive results show that the Cu@MgO-SiO2/Al2O3 macrocapsules possess strong thermal storage capacity and can be used as effective thermal storage materials, especially in advanced high temperature thermal storage systems.

Microstructure and Properties of Aluminum Alloy/Diamond Composite Materials Prepared by Laser Cladding.

In this article, AlSi10Mg aluminum alloy was used as the substrate to prepare aluminum alloy/diamond composite materials with laser cladding technology. The effects of the composition and laser power on the microstructure and thermal properties of the composite materials were studied. The results show that the prefabrication of tungsten carbide layer on the diamond surface enhances the wettability of diamond with aluminum alloy and reduces the laser reflection, which ensures the implementability of laser cladding technology for the preparation of aluminum alloy/diamond composites. The laser power and components determine the temperature of the molten pool and thus the state of the organization of the composite material to be formed by cladding. With the increase in the diamond content, the density, specific heat, mechanical properties, and average linear thermal expansion coefficient of the composite material gradually decrease, while the thermal conductivity first increases and then decreases. The thermal conductivity of the aluminum alloy/diamond composite material prepared by laser cladding is 200.68 W/mK, and the linear thermal expansion coefficient is 1.904 × 10-5/K, which are superior to those of the matrix AlSi10Mg aluminum alloy.

Sulfur‐Rich Norbornadiene‐Derived Infrared Transparent Polymers by Inverse Vulcanization

Infrared (IR) transparent polymer materials prepared by inverse vulcanization, as a promising candidate to replace inorganic materials, are new materials for constructing key devices in IR optics. However, it is difficult to achieve a balance between infrared optical and thermal properties in polymers due to the intrinsic infrared absorption of organic materials. Herein, our strategy is to construct a high boiling point symmetrical molecular norbornadiene derivative cross‐linking agent (DMMD) which can be inverse vulcanized with molten sulfur, and obtain Poly(S‐r‐DMMD) with different sulfur content by controlling the feed ratio of sulfur. With the rigid core and low IR activity in DMMD, the prepared polymers exhibit tunable thermal properties (Tg: 98.3‐119.8 °C) and high IR transmittance (medium‐wave infrared region (MWIR): 42.9‐52.6 %; long‐wave infrared region (LWIR): 1.5‐5.29 %). In addition, Poly(S‐r‐DMMD) can be used to prepare large‐size free‐standing Fresnel lenses for IR imaging by simple hot‐pressing, which provides flexibility in the design and production of IR fine lenses. This study provides a novel strategy for balancing the thermal and optical properties of IR transparent polymer materials, while providing relevant references for balancing the IR optical and thermal properties of polymer materials.

Development and Validation of Asphalt Pavement Rutting Prediction Model with Transient Temperature Field Considered

This study developed a transient rutting analysis program based on the principles of heat transfer and the viscoelastic–viscoplastic theory of asphalt mixtures. Using the finite element model (FEM) model corresponding to the multi-layer pavement structure and the subprogram interface of ABAQUS software, along with Python programming, the program was designed to estimate rutting under transient temperature field conditions with climate conditions, traffic flow, and structure layer constitutive parameters of pavement considered. Subsequently, the program was used to validate the efficiency of the solution and analyze the influencing factors of internal temperature field and rutting depth within the asphalt pavement structure. Results showed that, based on meteorological data and recommended values of material thermal properties, the FEM of transient temperature field can accurately simulate the temperature field distribution of pavement structure. Based on loading information and dynamic modulus test, the transient temperature variable rutting with FEM proposed in this paper can simulate and calculate the rutting of pavement structure layer with some errors for different pavement conditions from 5% to 40%. Through parametric analysis of the influence factors of temperature field and rutting, the modified transient temperature field rutting prediction program can effectively simulate rutting of pavement structure, and the minor errors were less than 20%.

Grafting of Lactic Acid and ε-Caprolactone onto Alpha-Cellulose and Sugarcane Bagasse Cellulose: Evaluation of Mechanical Properties in Polylactic Acid Composites.

In this paper, we present the synthesis of composite materials comprised of α-cellulose and sugarcane bagasse cellulose fibers grafted with lactic acid and ε-caprolactone. These fibers were incorporated as reinforcements into a PLA matrix by extrusion, producing composite materials with improved mechanical properties. The grafting of lactic acid and ε-caprolactone onto the fibers was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy, demonstrating the chemical modification of the fibers. The morphology of the fibers and composites was analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), showing that the fibers are encapsulated within the polymeric matrix. This suggests good PLA-fiber interaction for the 90 PLA/10 α-Cel, 90 PLA/10 LAC-g-α-Cel, and 90 PLA/10 ε-CL-g-α-Cel composite materials. The obtained composite materials were tested under tensile loading. Incorporating 10 wt% of LAC-g-FBA-Cel and α-Cel-g-FBA-Cel grafted fibers into the PLA matrix improved the tensile modulus by 28% and 12%, respectively, compared with PLA. The maximum tensile strength values obtained were for composite materials with 10 wt% PLA/α-Cel, LAC-g-α-Cel, and FBA-Cel with 23, 27, and 37% concerning PLA. DSC thermal studies showed a reduction in the glass transition temperature in the composites with grafted fibers. The results suggest better interfacial adhesion between the PLA matrix and both grafted and non-grafted α-cellulose fibers, which contributes to the observed improvements in the mechanical and thermal properties of the composite materials. The results demonstrate that the composites can be produced through extrusion. Once the optimal concentration has been determined, α-cellulose or sugarcane bagasse grafted with lactic acid and ε-caprolactone can be incorporated into the PLA matrix, exhibiting adjustable properties.

Effect of Resin Content on the Properties of Roofing Tile for Building Materials

The production process of roofing tile materials uses among other materials thermosetting adhesive resins normally urea formaldehyde (UF), phenol formaldehyde (PF), di-isocyanate (PMDI) at various content mixtures, 3wt%, 5wt%, 7wt%, 9w% and 11wt% with a usual thickness of 6 mm. The fibers, adhesives, and other materials are then placed into a steel mold with the standard dimensions of 400 mm x 400 mm, to be then hydraulically pressed at high pressure and the required temperature. Overall, PMDI synthetic adhesives have better physical and mechanical properties than PF synthetic adhesives, however the thermal properties of UF and PF synthetic adhesives are better than PMDI. The physical properties testing were density, humidity content, absorption of water, thickness inflated and water permeability. The mechanical properties such as modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE), impact strength and tensile strength are all measured according to JIS A 5908-2003, ASTM D 256-2006a,TIS 535-2556 and ASTM D1037-12.The testing for the thermal conductivity, thermal resistivity and solar reflectance were done according to ASTM C177-2010 and ASTM E 891-87. The type of resin content and adhesive used had a significant impact on the physical, mechanical and thermal properties of the roofing tile materials of showed in the results of the analysis of variance (p >0.05). The produced roofing tile has an improved thermal conductivity and heat insulation which can be a substitute for hazardous asbestos based roofing materials.
