Investigation of lightweight gypsum based on montmorillonite nanoclay with enhanced insulation properties

PurposeNowadays, thermal comfort plays a prominent role in contemporary construction practices. Appropriate thermal insulation not only offers energy efficiency benefits in buildings but also enhances occupant well-being, comfort, and productivity. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the thermal properties of building materials is essential. This research aims to prepare and investigate a lightweight gypsum-based composite incorporating nano montmorillonite with advanced thermal insulation properties, considering both quality and cost-effectiveness while ensuring environmental compatibility.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts a laboratory experimental approach. A gypsum sample (without additives) and seven samples of gypsum combined with varying percentages of sodium and calcium montmorillonite nanoclays undergo extensive testing and analysis. Subsequently, the properties of these samples are compared.FindingsThe results indicate that adding montmorillonite nanoclays to gypsum composites reduces the density of the tested samples and increases their porosity. Moreover, the thermal conductivity coefficient decreases in these samples, significantly improving the thermal insulation properties of the lightweight gypsum plaster. This improvement is more pronounced in samples containing sodium montmorillonite nanoclay compared to calcium-based samples. Additionally, the investigations reveal that compressive strength decreases with the addition of montmorillonite to the samples.Originality/valueIn this research, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of gypsum plaster with varying percentages of sodium and calcium montmorillonite nanoclays. The studied properties include density, porosity, thermal conductivity coefficient, and compressive strength. Additionally, stress-strain diagrams, elastic modulus, and initial and secondary critical stresses were analyzed for each specimen.

Lightweight and robust cellulose/MXene/polyurethane composite aerogels as personal protective wearable devices for electromagnetic interference shielding.

The increasing electromagnetic pollution is urgently needed as an electromagnetic interference shielding protection device for wearable devices. Two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXene), due to their interesting layered structure and high electrical conductivity, are ideal candidates for constructing efficient conductive networks in electromagnetic interference shielding materials. In this work, lightweight and robust cellulose/MXene/polyurethane composite aerogels were prepared by mixing cellulose nanofiber (CNF) suspensions with MXene, followed by freeze-drying and coating with polyurethane. In this process, CNF effectively assembled MXene nanosheets into a conductive network by enhancing the interactions between MXene nanosheets. The prepared aerogel exhibited the shielding effectiveness of 48.59 dB in the X-band and an electrical conductivity of 0.34 S·cm-1. Meanwhile, the composite aerogel also possessed excellent thermal insulation, infrared stealth, mechanical and hydrophobic properties, and can be used as a wearable protective device to protect the human body from injuries in different scenarios while providing electromagnetic interference shielding protection.

Scleroglucan-Based Foam Incorporating Recycled Rigid Polyurethane Waste for Novel Insulation Material Production

This study details the synthesis and performance evaluation of a novel lightweight thermal and acoustic insulation material, resulting from the combination of a scleroglucan-based hydrogel and recycled rigid polyurethane waste powder. Through a sublimation-driven water-removal process, a porous three-dimensional network structure is formed, showcasing notable thermal and acoustic insulation properties. Experimental data are presented to highlight the material’s performance, including comparisons with commercially available mineral wool and polymeric foams. This material versatility is demonstrated through tunable mechanical, thermal and acoustic characteristics, achieved by strategically adjusting the concentration of the biopolymer and additives. This adaptability positions the material as a promising candidate for different insulation applications. Addressing environmental concerns related to rigid polyurethane waste disposal, the study contributes to the circular economy.

Utilizing decommissioned windmill blades as reinforcement or filler for biocomposites

Decommissioned or damaged windmill blades and other wastes have limited applications and are generally disposed into landfills or incinerated. Increasing generation of wind energy will also lead to increase in blades available for disposal. It is estimated that more than 800,000 tons of blades will be available annually for disposal from 2050. Blades contain glass, carbon, resins and other valuable materials and hence it is prudent to develop methods to reuse or recycle the blades. In this study, we have used windmill blade waste (WBW) as reinforcement for polypropylene (PP) and also as filler/additive for coir-WBW-PP hybrid composites. Various proportions of the components were made into composites and studied for the changes in mechanical, acoustic, thermal and noise insulation properties. Tensile strength did not show major increase in properties whereas 70/30 WBW/PP composites had highest flexural strength and modulus. Addition of WBW considerably increased both the tensile and flexural properties of the hybrid composites with up to 180% increase in flexural strength and 173% increase in modulus. Similarly, hybrid composites had better thermal conductivity and the composites containing 80% WBW and 20% PP had the highest thermal conductivity. Coir improved the acoustic sorption due to the presence of pores and voids in the composites whereas WBW acts as filler and decreased the sound sorption. WBW can be effectively used as reinforcement or filler for PP based composites.

Study on thermal runaway propagation inhibition of battery module by flame-retardant phase change material combined with aerogel felt

Phase change materials (PCMs) are susceptible to fire and may accelerate heat transfer when thermal runaway propagation (TRP) in lithium-ion battery (LIB) modules, requiring the design and safe use of insulation structures with excellent flame-retardant properties. In this work, the sandwich structure composed of flame-retardant phase change material (FRPCM) combined with aerogel felt (AEGF) is used to study the inhibitory effect on TRP of pouch battery modules (BMs). The structural materials are applied between cells, and the changes of temperature, voltage, mass and other parameters in the TRP process are analyzed by changing the thickness of FRPCMs and AEGFs, and the changes of heat flux of materials were also qualitatively analyzed. The results show that the increase of FRPCM and AEGF thickness can increase the interval time of TRP and reduce the overall thermal risk of the BMs. Compared to Test-1, the increase in TRP time between cells 1 and 2 in Test-2 to Test-5 ranged from 52.7% to 358.7%, and the longest thermal runaway interval reached 844 s. Both the structural materials in Test-6 and Test-7 block the TRP. Combining the thermal conductivity of PCMs and the thermal insulation properties of AEGFs, this work can effectively conduct heat to the environment and block the TRP when applied to BMs, which provides a valuable reference for efficient inhibition and blocking of TRP.

3D‐Printed Mullite‐Reinforced SiC‐Based Aerogel Composites

AbstractThere is a growing demand for thermal management materials in electronic fields. Aerogels have attracted interest due to their extremely low density and extraordinary thermal insulation properties. However, the application of aerogels is limited by high production costs and the requirement that aerogel structures not be load‐bearing. In this study, mullite‐reinforced SiC‐based aerogel composite (MR‐SiC AC) is prepared through 3D printing combined with in situ growth of SiC nanowires in post processing. The fabricated MR‐SiC AC not only has ultra‐low thermal conductivity (0.021 W K m−1) and high porosity (90.0%), but also a high Young's modulus (24.4 MPa) and high compressive strength (1.65 MPa), both exceeding the measurements of existing resilient aerogels by an order of magnitude. These properties make MR‐SiC AC an ideal solution for the precision thermal management of lightweight structures having complex geometry for functional devices.

A novel strategy to enhance heavy oil Recovery: Condensation heat transfer calculation and 2-D visualized physical simulation

High carbon emissions and low efficiency in thermal utilization are pivotal challenges in heavy oil development. Addressing the urgent need to enhance heavy oil production, this paper introduces an innovative approach in which aerogel and flue gas serve as supplementary additives in steam thermal recovery. To investigate the mechanisms behind the improved heat transfer and oil recovery facilitated by the combination of aerogel and flue gas, condensation heat transfer experiments and 2-D visual oil displacement experiments were carried out. The condensation heat transfer coefficient, oil displacement performance, and heat utilization efficiency were analyzed and compared. The results showed the porous structure of the aerogel enhances its thermal insulation properties by adsorbing flue gas, thereby reducing the steam-to-cold object condensation heat transfer coefficient by 60.6%. The cementation between aerogel nanoparticles (NPs) retained in the formation and rock particles formed an insulating layer that impedes the upward propagation of steam heat. Combined with efficacy of flue gas foam in improving fluid flow, this promoted the horizontal expansion of the steam chamber, resulting in an 8.2% and 3.4% increase in the steam chamber’s extent compared to using steam and a combination of steam with aerogels, respectively. Moreover, the profile control and thermal insulation impacted following the NPs, lowering the water cut in the produced fluid and enhancing the oil recovery by 7.9%. Upon the application of flue gas, this enhancement in recovery extended to 9.3%.

Preparation and performance research of ecological concrete using waste wood

To mitigate environmental damage from mineral aggregate extraction, bio-based materials have garnered research interest as potential replacements for natural mineral aggregates. This work utilized waste wood as filler to prepare lightweight foam concrete with thermal insulation, low-temperature and corrosion resistance properties. The feasibility of using wood aggregate-based foam concrete (WFC) was explored in terms of dry density, softening coefficient, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, chloride ion permeability, freezing resistance, and sulfate attack resistance. Results showed that simultaneous addition of waste wood aggregate (WA) and foam effectively reduced WFC bulk weight and thermal conductivity while enhancing water resistance. However, the porous morphology of WA and foam caused the reduction of mechanical properties. In terms of durability, the addition of WA can increase the energy absorption capacity when WFC is subjected to expansion stress, reduce the damage to the structure, and have an inhibiting effect on the cracking of WFC caused by sulfate attack and freeze-thaw cycles. Nevertheless, WA's high water absorption loosened the matrix in WFC's interfacial transition zone (ITZ), increasing harmful pores and negatively affecting durability. In addition, in order to predict the mechanical properties of WFC and the resistance to sulfate attack, this study established a function model for the relationship between the compressive strength (Maintenance specimens of the same age and Specimen of sulfate attack) and the WA dosage. In conclusion, The use of waste wood for the preparation of WFC is more advantageous and sustainable than conventional foam concrete for the insulation of precast walls and coastal structures.

Exploring Olive Pit Powder as a Filler for Enhanced Thermal Insulation in Epoxy Mortars to Increase Sustainability in Building Construction

This article explores the use of olive pit powder (OPP) as a promising resource for enhancing the thermal insulation properties of epoxy mortars. A comprehensive analysis of the chemical and physical characteristics of OPP was conducted, employing analytical techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis and emitted gas analysis (TG-MS-EGA), and proximal analysis. Experimental samples of epoxy grout were prepared by using different proportions of a conventional inorganic filler, quartz powder, and OPP within an epoxy mortar matrix. As the percentage of OPP in the formulation increased, the microstructure of the samples gradually became more porous and less compact. Consequently, there was a decrease in density with the increase in OPP content. The 28-day compressive strength decreased from 46 MPa to 12.8 MPa, respectively, in the samples containing only quartz (Sample E) and only OPP (Sample A) as a filler. Similarly, flexural strength decreased from 35.2 to 5.3 MPa. The thermal conductivity decreased from 0.3 W/mK in Sample E to 0.11 in Sample A. Therefore, increasing the %wt of OPP improved insulating properties while reducing the mechanical resistance values. This study highlights the potential of OPP as an environmentally friendly and thermally efficient filler for epoxy mortars, thereby promoting sustainable construction practices.

Effects of carboxymethyl cellulose concentration on mechanical, viscoelastic properties, and thermal properties of starch/plant fiber foaming tableware materials with foam structure

In this study, a novel bio-based composite of starch/plant fiber foaming tableware material was prepared by the hot-pressing foaming method. The influence of the content of carboxymethyl cellulos (CMC) as a new type of film-forming agent filler on the properties of foam materials was systematically investigated. The results showed that the foam material with 10 wt% CMC had excellent cell morphology and uniform cell size (the average cell size reached the minimum value of 465.7 μm), relatively high porosity (57.01%), and excellent thermal insulation properties (thermal conductivity: 0.0541 W/m·K). The tensile strength of foam increased from 4.289 MPa for 0 wt% CMC to 5.714 MPa for 10 wt% CMC loading. Similarly, the flexural strength also increased from 11.609 MPa to 15.719 MPa for the foam material with 10 wt% CMC. The thermal stability and viscoelastic properties of the foam material reached the highest after adding 10 wt% CMC. In addition, the increase of CMC content is beneficial to improve the oil resistance and biodegradability of the material. The research shows that CMC is an effective filler to improve the properties of starch/plant fiber foaming tableware materials, which can greatly promote the development of bio-based polymer foam materials.

Structural test and FEM analysis of a thermal bridge connection employing the UHPC system for concrete cladding wall

The paper describes the technical design used to develop a structure model that improved thermal insulation properties and structural performance. This study experimentally and analytically investigated the shear capacity of a precast ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) rib with a concrete cladding wall through the shear keys connection. The structural performance was examined by conducting tests on five specimens under conditions of static loading of the UHPC rib with and without shear keys. The test results revealed that the structural load capacity is significantly affected by changes to the dimensions and design of the shear key, as well as the eccentricity distance in these specimens, the load capacity was approximately 3 to 4 times higher compared to conventional solutions. Numerical models were built to simultaneously predict the shear capacity of structures with varying loading positions and crack failure. These results demonstrated that the proposed modeling may be effectively used to verify the experimental results. Several important input parameters, a constitutive model, and a bar-concrete interface in the LS-DYNA program are suggested.

Fabrication of lightweight ceramics of complex geometries in freezing weather

Natural freezing weather is used to fabricate lightweight ceramic monoliths with aligned pores for the first time. A stable aqueous-based alumina slurry (16 vol%) was formulated and frozen at −10 to −25 °C in natural freezing environment. The thermally treated ceramic monoliths achieved ∼82–88 vol% porosity with short-range aligned pores. Finally, the unidirectional pores in the structure are achieved using a mold with thermal insulation properties. Natural freezing saves 300 kJ of energy per kg of alumina slurry. Mechanically stable lightweight porous ceramics with complex geometries can be designed without cryogenic fluids, refrigeration, or thermal baths. Implementing natural freezing in the porous ceramics industries, particularly in the Arctic region, will bring forward a sustainable approach by reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

The role of Palm Fronds Charcoal Waste Particles On Mechanical, Thermal, and Acoustic Insulation Properties of Epoxy Composite

The main objectives of the current study are to improve the mechanical, thermal, physical and sound insulation properties of an epoxy composite, in addition to reducing environmental pollution resulting from the burning of palm kernel waste, which results from annual periodic cleaning of the palms trees, which have been disposed of by burning it. Charcoal Waste Particles of Palm Fronds Base have been used for epoxy matrix as a naturalistic reinforcement particulate material, risk-free, and non-toxic to enhance its features. The charcoal waste particles have been used in weight rates of 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%. As stated by the results, the reinforcement process by charcoal waste particles increased the tensile strength value from 8.78 MPa to 13.64 MPa, with a 55%, and increased the elastic modulus value from 0.67MPa to 3.63MPa, with a rate 437%. Moreover, additionally, increased the bending strength from 0.1MPa to 0.64MPa, with a 540%, the hardness value increased from 58.87 to 74 (Shore D No) with a rate 26%, as well as the wear rate has been decreased. Thermal conductivity has dropped by 30% from the pure sample’s value of 0.15W/m. °C to 0.11W/m. °C. Concerning the Acoustic insulation’s, the results demonstrate that the specimens decreased the transferred acoustic energy levels from 103.3 to 95.2dB with rate 8%, with regard to the density of the prepared specimens it has been decreased from 1.55g/cm3 to 1.35g/cm3 and the results show that the liquid absorption rates have been decreased for all composite specimens.

Research on high-temperature mechanical behaviour of carbon/phenolic composites under ultra-high heating rates

Fibre-reinforced resin matrix composites exhibit excellent resistance to ablation, thermal insulation and mechanical properties at high temperatures, making them widely used in aerospace engineering. Needle-punched reinforced carbon/phenolic composites are the most commonly used structural material for solid rocket engine nozzles. However, during the working process of the engine, the mechanical behaviour under ultra-high heating rates is difficult to characterise due to extreme loads. Therefore, in this study, specimens were carbonised before testing, and an electric heating testing machine was combined with an infrared thermal imager and digital image correlation system to characterise the mechanical behaviour of carbon/phenolic at ultra-high heating rates. The results indicate that at a heating rate of 200 °C/s, the compressive modulus increases linearly with temperature, reaching 63.1 GPa at 1400 °C. The maximum compressive strength is 61.9 MPa at 1400 °C, while the minimum is 27.4 MPa at 600 °C. Referring to the high-temperature damage constitutive model, a pyrolysis damage high-temperature strengthening constitutive model was constructed, accurately describing the in-plane compression mechanical behaviour of carbon/phenolic composites.

Micro-helical Ni3Fe chain encapsulated in ultralight MXene/C aerogel to realize multi-functionality: Radar stealth, thermal insulation, fire resistance, and mechanical properties

Magnetic carbon aerogels with high porosity, ultralow density, and excellent impedance matching are considered to be a promising microwave absorption (MA) material. In this study, ethylene glycol polymerization is used to assemble Ni3Fe particles into a micro-helical chain, which is further wrapped by MXene and then encapsulated in poly-Schiff-base aerogels through the carbonyl–amine condensation reaction. Finally, ultralight TiO2/Ni3Fe/MXene/C (NFMC) aerogels are synthesized through calcination treatment. Benefiting from the electromagnetic synergistic effect of multi-dimensional and multi-component materials, the NFMC-7 aerogel exhibits excellent MA performance with a minimum reflection loss of −61.6 dB at 3.0-mm thickness and an effective absorption bandwidth of 8.16 GHz at 2.77-mm thickness under a low filler loading of 7.6 wt%. Commercial computer simulation technology is used to verify the strong magnetic and dielectric loss characteristics of Ni3Fe chains. At the same time, the NFMC-7 aerogel exhibits excellent radar stealth, heat insulation, compression resistance, and fire resistance performance, which verifies its practical applicability. Overall, this work establishes an effective strategy to fabricate multi-functional magnetic aerogels, which can serve as lightweight, thin, and strong microwave absorbers with broad absorption bandwidth.

Sustainable construction materials for low-cost housing: Thermal insulation potential of expanded SBR composites with leather waste

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in improving energy efficiency and thermal comfort in low-income housing, especially in regions prone to extreme climatic conditions. Conventional construction materials such as bricks and concrete exhibit shortcomings in energy efficiency, resulting in high indoor temperatures. This scenario not only impacts residents' well-being but also increases energy consumption, especially for air conditioning systems, potentially straining the electrical infrastructure in hot climate areas, leading to power outages and adverse consequences for the community and local industry. This study proposes an innovative and sustainable solution: the use of expanded styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) with micronized leather shavings, possessing thermal insulation properties. The thermal insulation capacity of the composites was evaluated using heat flow methods, hot/cold plate heat flow analysis, and impedance tube acoustic method. The SBR/Leather waste composite at 20 phr emerges as a viable, promising, and sustainable alternative, exhibiting significant thermal insulation capacity with a thermal conductivity of 0.073 Wm-1.K−1 and temperature attenuation close to 15 °C, potentially enhancing comfort and quality of life in urban areas. The thermal insulation results of the other composites also surpassed traditional construction materials such as building boards, plywood, fiberglass, asphalt roofing, and cement tiles. The study demonstrates the feasibility of reusing leather as a reinforcing filler in rubber-based foams to produce thermal insulation materials, offering a sustainable solution to mitigate urban heating and improve quality of life in cities.

High reflectivity and high emissivity integrated double layer coating on the flexible alumina fiber fabric with enhanced heat-dissipation efficiency

High emissivity coatings on hypersonic vehicle surfaces dissipate heat by emitting thermal radiation. While the difficulty of increasing emissivity limits the performance of coatings to improve heat-dissipation of the thermal insulation felt. Herein, a novel high-reflectivity and high-emissivity integrated double-layer coating was developed to enhance the thermal insulation performance of the alumina fiber fabric. The coating comprised of TiO2@SiO2 (T@S) as reflective agent and ZrO2/SiCw (ZSC) as emittance agents, was applied on the surface of alumina fiber fabric (AFF). The reflecting effect of radiation heat from the high reflective agent enhanced the thermal insulation properties of the double-layer coating. In the wavelength range of 0.4–2.5 μm, the average emissivity of the ZSC coating was 0.83 and the average reflectivity of the T@S coating was 0.63. With continuous heating at 1400 °C for 10 min with a butane torch, the temperature on the backside of the T@S–ZSC-coated AFF remained relatively stable at 225 °C, which is notably decreased by 80 °C compared to that of the single-layer ZSC-coated AFF. The tensile strength of AFF with T@S–ZSC coating reached 35 MPa after being heat treated at 1200 °C. Moreover, the bonding strength between the coating and the AFF substrate was measured to be 0.15 MPa. The double-layer coating with high emissivity and reflectivity, along with a flexible AFF substrate, offers a promising solution for addressing the challenging of surface heat-dissipation in hypersonic vehicles.

Composite aerogel with oriented structure of Polyimide@ polypyrrole /MXene for effective shielding against electromagnetic waves and insulation

Although the rapid evolution of electromagnetic wave technology make much progress to society, but has also caused electromagnetic pollution, which poses risks to health, information security, and disrupts communication and device operation. The development of new Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding materials, especially those that are lightweight, easy to process and high shielding efficiency, has become the key to overcoming this challenge. In this study, MXene nanosheets with few layers were fabricated by chemical etching with lithium fluoride (LiF) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). Subsequently, the unidirectional freeze-drying method and vacuum-assisted impregnation method were applied to fabricate Polyimide@ Polypyrrole/MXene (PI@PPy/MXene) composite aerogels with oriented structure. The electromagnetic shielding properties of the oriented PI@PPy composite aerogels were modulated by changing the polymerization time of PPy to control its conductivity. When the polymerization time was set as 7h, the oriented PI@PPy composite aerogel showed the highest EMI efficiency, the value of EMI SE was 19.36dB. With the introduction of MXene, the EMI SE of the PI@PPy/MXene composite gel was increased compared to PI@PPy and reached to 32.64dB. The improvement in electromagnetic shielding performance was attributed to the co-enhancement among the PI aerogel with oriented structure, PPy and MXene, which is the result of the synergisic effect of Multiple reflection losses and polarization losses within the aerogel. The infrared thermography at 200°C showed that with increasing PPy polymerization time, the external temperatures of the samples are 40.3°C, 44.8°C, 51.4°C, 55.4°C and 48.6°C, demonstrating the excellent thermal insulation properties.

Janus structure design of polyimide composite foam for absorption-dominated EMI shielding and thermal insulation

In the present work, by virtue of the synergistic and independent effects of Janus structure, an asymmetric nickel-chain/multiwall carbon nanotube/polyimide (Ni/MWCNTs/PI) composite foam with absorption-dominated electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and thermal insulation performances was successfully fabricated through an ordered casting and directional freeze-drying strategy. Water-soluble polyamic acid (PAA) was chosen to match the oriented freeze-drying method to acquire oriented pores, and the thermal imidization process from PAA to PI exactly eliminated the interface of the multilayered structure. By controlling the electro-magnetic gradient and propagation path of the incident microwaves in the MWCNT/PI and Ni/PI layers, the PI composite foam exhibited an efficient EMI SE of 55.8 dB in the X-band with extremely low reflection characteristics (R=0.22). The asymmetric conductive network also greatly preserved the thermal insulation properties of PI. The thermal conductivity (TC) of the Ni/MWCNT/PI composite foam was as low as 0.032 W/(m K). In addition, owing to the elimination of MWCNT/PI and Ni/PI interfaces during the thermal imidization process, the composite foam showed satisfactory compressive strength. The fabricated PI composite foam could provide reliable electromagnetic protection in complex applications and withstand high temperatures, which has great potential in cutting-edge applications such as advanced aircraft.
