Characteristics of Insulating Panels Realised from Coconut Palm Fibres for Low-Temperature Thermal Insulation

In recent years, there has been growing interest in issues relating to pollution and energy consumption, and the resulting regulations have led the construction sector to focus on thermal insulation. The application of bio-based insulation materials can help to minimise the environmental impact of buildings by reducing energy demand both during construction and over the lifetime of the building. Agroforestry biomass plays an interesting role, as its use can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The aim of this work is to produce insulating panels from agroforestry by-products for low-temperature thermal insulation applications. The insulating panels in this study are produced from coconut palm fibres and their thermophysical properties are determined. They were produced using a human-motricity press and the temperature rise was controlled using the hot-tape method. Characteristics such as calorific value and modelling of temperature rise as a function of time to calculate thermal conductivity, thermal effusivity and diffusivity were determined. The calorific value varies from 3668.0 to 4135.0 and from 3742.0 to 4186.0 cal.g-1 when the moisture content is 11.28 and 10.61%, respectively. The thermal conductivity, effusivity and thermal diffusivity are 0.4 W.m-1.K-1, 760.30 J.m-2.°C-1.s-1/2 and 2.73.10-7 m.s-1, respectively. In view of these results, coconut fibre represents a potential precursor to produce insulating panels.

Assessing the Impact of Climate Changes, Building Characteristics, and HVAC Control on Energy Requirements under a Mediterranean Climate

Despite efforts to mitigate climate change, annual greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, which may lead to the global warming of our planet. Buildings’ thermal energy needs are inherently linked to climate conditions. Consequently, it is crucial to evaluate how climate change affects these energy demands. Despite extensive analysis, a comprehensive assessment involving a diverse range of building types has not been consistently conducted. The primary objective of this research is to perform a coherent evaluation of the influence of climate changes, construction element properties, and the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system type of control on the energy requirements of six buildings (residential, services, and commercial). The buildings are considered to be located in a temperate Mediterranean climate. Our focus is on the year 2070, considering three distinct climatic scenarios: (i) maintaining the current climate without further changes, (ii) moderate climate changes, and (iii) extreme climate changes. The buildings are distributed across three different locations, each characterized by unique climatic conditions. Buildings’ envelope features a traditional External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) serves as thermal insulation material. Two critical design factors are explored: EPS thickness ranging from 0 (no insulation) to 12 cm; and horizontal external fixed shading elements varying lengths from 0 (absence) to 150 cm. Six alternative setpoint ranges are assessed for the HVAC system control: three based on the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and three based on indoor air temperature (Tair). Results were obtained with a validated in-home software tool. They show that, even under extreme climate conditions, the application of thermal insulation remains energetically favorable; however, its relative importance diminishes as climate severity increases. Then, proper insulation design remains important for energy efficiency. The use of external shading elements for glazing (e.g., overhangs, louvers) proves beneficial in specific cases. As climate changes intensify, the significance of shading elements grows. Thus, strategic placement and design are necessary for good results. The HVAC system’s energy consumption depends on the level of thermal comfort requirements, on the climate characteristics, and on the building’s type of use. As climate change severity intensifies, energy demands for cooling increase, whereas energy needs for heating decrease. However, it is essential to recognize that the impact of climate changes on HVAC system energy consumption significantly depends on the type of building.

Large-scale and facile fabrication of phenyl-containing silicone foam materials with lightweight, wide-temperature flexibility and tunable pore structure for exceptional thermal insulation

Silicone foam materials with unique inorganic/organic molecular networks and porous structures are widely used in many emerging fields from aerospace to new energy fields. However, current silicone foam materials still show some limitations, such as the relatively high-density values of >200 mg cm−3, complex fabricating process and difficulty in tailoring pore structure. Herein, we report a large-scale and facile fabricating strategy to prepare phenyl-containing silicone foam materials (PhSiRF) with ultra-lightweight feature, tunable pore structure, and excellent wide-temperature mechanical flexibility. Interestingly, the presence of phenyl groups onto the Si–O–Si backbone tailors the chemical foaming rate probably due to the steric hindrance effect, thus producing tunable pore size distributions in the range of 180–500 μm. Typically, the PhSiRF with 50 % phenyl groups not only shows a very low density of ∼100 mg cm−3, superior to previous silicone foams and composites, but also exhibits wide-temperature flexibility (stable compressive strain of 80 % from −90 to 210 °C) and excellent thermal insulation performance, which outperforms those of conventional polymer foams including polyurethane, polyethylene and melamine foams. Based on the structure observation and theory analysis, the influence of different pore morphological structures on the thermal insulation performance is discussed and demonstrated. Clearly, this work provides a new yet simple method for developing high-performance silicone rubber foam materials for promising thermal insulation applications.

A high-entropy carbonitride aerogel thermal insulator: Theoretical and experimental investigations

A resilient, flame-retardant and high-temperature resistant high-entropy carbonitride aerogel (HECNA), (Ti1/5Cr1/5Mo1/5Nb1/5Ta1/5)(C0.56N0.44), was successfully synthesized and thoroughly characterized. It exhibited a porosity of 93.9 %, a compressive strength of 1.1 MPa and a remarkable stability at temperatures up to 1673 K, which, along with its outstanding fire-retardancy, and low thermal conductivity (as low as 0.149 W·m−1·K−1 at 298 K), made it a good candidate material for thermal insulation applications in demanding environments. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the [N]/([C]+[N]) ratio in HECNA affects its lattice thermal conductivity, with a potential 83 % reduction achievable by increasing the ratio from 0 to 1/2. This aligns with experimental findings, underscoring the substantial impact of elemental composition of HECNA on its thermal insulation performance.

Controlling the Size of Hydrotalcite Particles and Its Impact on the Thermal Insulation Capabilities of Coatings.

This study focuses on the development of high-performance insulation materials to address the critical issue of reducing building energy consumption. Magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxides (LDHs), known for their distinctive layered structure featuring positively charged brucite-like layers and an interlayer space, have been identified as promising candidates for insulation applications. Building upon previous research, which demonstrated the enhanced thermal insulation properties of methyl trimethoxysilane (MTS) functionalized LDHs synthesized through a one-step in situ hydrothermal method, this work delves into the systematic exploration of particle size regulation and its consequential effects on the thermal insulation performance of coatings. Our findings indicate a direct correlation between the dosage of MTS and the particle size of LDHs, with an optimal dosage of 4 wt% MTS yielding LDHs that exhibit a tightly interconnected hydrotalcite lamellar structure. This specific modification resulted in the most significant improvement in thermal insulation, achieving a temperature difference of approximately 25.5 °C. Furthermore, to gain a deeper understanding of the thermal insulation mechanism of MTS-modified LDHs, we conducted a thorough characterization of their UV-visible diffuse reflectance and thermal conductivity. This research contributes to the advancement of LDH-based materials for use in thermal insulation applications, offering a sustainable solution to energy conservation in the built environment.

A novel investigation of co-processing porous geopolymer using glass fibres recycled from waste turbine blades

Abstract This work investigates the possibility of using recycled glass fibre (rGF) to co-process porous geopolymer. A new procedure was developed to incorporate rGF into geopolymer preparation and the content of rGF in porous geopolymer was varied to investigate its effect on thermal and mechanical properties. The rGF was co-processed through mixing with a combination of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) solution to supplement raw materials required to make geopolymer but also provide fibres as potential structure reinforcement. Due to the enriched silica content obtained from rGF and leftover fibres, a nearly 80 % strength increase (from 0.092 MPa to 0.165 MPa) was obtained without compromising its low thermal conductivity. This opens up a potential route to re-using rGF in the development of improved porous geopolymer for thermal insulation applications.

Ionic-physical–chemical triple cross-linked all-biomass-based aerogel for thermal insulation applications

Aerogels, as a unique porous material, are expected to be used as insulation materials to solve the global environmental and energy crisis. Using chitosan, citric acid, pectin and phytic acid as raw materials, an all-biomass-based aerogel with high modulus was prepared by the triple strategy of ionic, physical and chemical cross-linking through directional freezing technique. Based on this three-dimensional network, the aerogel exhibited excellent compressive modulus (24.89 ± 1.76 MPa) over a wide temperature range and thermal insulation properties. In the presence of chitosan, citric acid and phytic acid, the aerogel obtained excellent fire safety (LOI value up to 31.2%) and antibacterial properties (antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli reached 81.98% and 67.43%). In addition, the modified aerogel exhibited excellent hydrophobicity (hydrophobic angle of 146°) and oil–water separation properties. More importantly, the aerogel exhibited a biodegradation rate of up to 40.31% for 35 days due to its all-biomass nature. This work provides a green and sustainable strategy for the production of highly environmentally friendly thermal insulation materials with high strength, flame retardant, antibacterial and hydrophobic properties.

Effect of Reinforcement Ratio and Particle Size on the Physical and Mechanical Performance of Epoxy Matrix Panels and Waste Wood from Iroko Chlorophora excelsa from Cameroon

The use of local materials developed from natural reinforcements remains a major challenge for many researchers in the development of the industry and the fight against pollution. The wood industry generates large quantities of environmental waste, including Iroko wood. To give Iroko a second life, this study uses Iroko sawdust waste to make an epoxy matrix composite material. The composite was produced using a cold pressing technique based on moving the top and bottom plates to a thickness of 10 mm. On this basis, three particle sizes [t < 0.35[, [0.35–0.63[, and [0.63–1[ were used, as well as three reinforcement (R)/matrix (M) percentages of 50R/50M, 60R/40M, and 70R/30M, where R is the reinforcement percentage and M is the matrix percentage. The physical tests, apparent and real density, porosity, moisture content, water absorption rate, absorption and desorption kinetics, diffusion theory, and activation energy were determined by the gravimetric method. A three-point bending test was carried out in accordance with the ASTM D790 for mechanical tests. The results show that the addition of Iroko particles lightens the material by reducing its density. The hydrophilic nature of Iroko particles increases the absorption rate and porosity, with good diffusion capacity as the particle size and percentage increase. The material produced can be light and porous, with possible applications in thermal insulation. In terms of kinetics, Verma et al.’s model best correlates the experimental desorption points for the 3 isotherms, while Page’s model best correlates the water absorption points. The mechanical results show that Young’s modulus and stress at break decrease with an increase in the reinforcement percentage and particle size. The mechanical results can be used to define the material’s applications in construction and furniture. In accordance with the EN312 standard, the composites produced can be classified as type 2 lightweight materials, suitable for use in dry and damp areas.

Hydrophobic Silk Fibroin-Agarose Composite Aerogel Fibers with Elasticity for Thermal Insulation Applications.

Aerogel fibers, characterized by their ultra-low density and ultra-low thermal conductivity, are an ideal candidate for personal thermal management as they hold the potential to effectively reduce the energy consumption of room heating and significantly contribute to energy conservation. However, most aerogel fibers have weak mechanical properties or require complex manufacturing processes. In this study, simple continuous silk fibroin-agarose composite aerogel fibers (SCAFs) were prepared by mixing agarose with silk fibroin through wet spinning and rapid gelation, followed by solvent replacement and supercritical carbon dioxide treatment. Among them, the rapid gelation of the SCAFs was achieved using agarose physical methods with heat-reversible gel properties, simplifying the preparation process. Hydrophobic silk fibroin-agarose composite aerogel fibers (HSCAFs) were prepared using a simple chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. After CVD, the HSCAFs' gel skeletons were uniformly coated with a silica layer containing methyl groups, endowing them with outstanding radial elasticity. Moreover, the HSCAFs exhibited low density (≤0.153 g/cm3), a large specific surface area (≥254.0 m2/g), high porosity (91.1-94.7%), and excellent hydrophobicity (a water contact angle of 136.8°). More importantly, they showed excellent thermal insulation performance in low-temperature (-60 °C) or high-temperature (140 °C) environments. The designed HSCAFs may provide a new approach for the preparation of high-performance aerogel fibers for personal thermal management.

Enhancing thermal safety of hydrophobic SiO2 aerogels through introducing ammonium polyphosphate intercalated layered double hydroxides

Enhancing the thermal safety of hydrophobic SiO2 aerogels (SAs) is crucial for its practical thermal insulation applications. Here, we explore a facile method to enhance the thermal safety of hydrophobic SAs with the introduction of ammonium polyphosphate intercalated layered double hydroxide (APP-LDH). The obtained results show that as-produced APP-LDH/SA composites maintain excellent fundamental properties, including low density (0.14–0.16 g/cm3), high porosity (92.8–93.5 %), high specific surface area (680.0–762.6 m2/g), and low thermal conductivity (25.3–26.9 mW/m/K). Notably, APP-LDH effectively inhibits the thermal oxidation decomposition of SAs. In comparison to pristine SAs and those modified solely with LDH, the APP-LDH/SA composites exhibit significantly improved thermal stability. The gross calorific value of the APP-LDH/SA-20 % (i.e., containing 20 wt% APP-LDH) decreases by 13.9 % and 5.2 % compared with that of neat SAs and SAs modified solely with 20 wt% LDH, respectively. The improved thermal stability and reduced gross calorific value completely confirm the enhancement of the thermal safety of the APP-LDH/SA composites. This work provides a simple method to improve the thermal safety of hydrophobic SAs, which expands the thermal insulation application scenarios of SAs.

Simulation of heat transport in textiles inspired by polar bear fur

The polar bear and several other Arctic mammals use fur composed of hollow-core fibers to survive in extremely cold environments. Here, we use finite element analysis to elucidate the role that the hollow core plays in regulating thermal transport. Specifically, we establish a three-dimensional model of a textile based on fibers with various core diameters and study transverse heat transport. First, these simulations revealed that textiles based on hollow-core fibers conduct significantly less heat than their solid-core counterparts with fibers with a core-to-fiber diameter ratio of 0.95, reducing thermal transport by 33%. In addition to this decrease in thermal transport, the mass per area of textiles is substantially reduced by making them hollow core. This led us to consider the performance of multi-layer textiles and to find that four-layer hollow-core textiles can exhibit a four-fold decrease in heat flux relative to single-layer solid-core textiles with the same mass per area. Taken together, these simulations show that hollow-core fibers are well suited for thermal insulation applications in which gravimetric thermal insulation is a priority.

Pathways to formulate lightweight and ultra-lightweight 3D printable cementitious composites

This paper studies the pathways to formulate lightweight and ultra-lightweight 3D printable cementitious composites. A hybrid approach was proposed by combining the advantages of traditional chemical-induced foaming (foaming approach) and lightweight particulate inclusions (synthetic foam approach). A comprehensive experimental program was conducted to evaluate the effects of foaming agents and fly ash cenosphere (FAC) on the printability, microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties of 3D printed samples. The results showed that the hybrid approach could produce a mixture with a density as low as 470 kg/m3 while ensuring good flowability and buildability owing to the lubricating effect of foaming and supporting skeleton formed by FAC. In addition, a three-step homogenization procedure was also developed to predict the effective elastic modulus and thermal conductivity of 3D printable cementitious composites and cementitious foam. The findings of the study highlighted the effectiveness of the hybrid approach in formulating 3D printable ultra-lightweight cementitious composites in thermal insulation and acoustic applications.

Fabrication of thermally resistant and mechanically flexible polyimide foams with anisotropic pore structures for thermal insulation and irradiation tolerance applications

Flexible polyimide foams (PIFs) demonstrate a great potential for applications in the fields of thermal insulation, flame retardancy and irradiation tolerance. In this work, mechanically flexible PIFs with anisotropic pore structure were prepared by adopting the copolymerization strategy and microwave-assisted foaming process. The copolymerization reaction was conducted to synthesize polyester ammonium salt (PEAS) precursors using 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) as dianhydride, 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) as the copolymerized diamines; afterwards, PEAS powders with particle sizes ranging from 100 to 300 μm were obtained by drying, crushing and sieving treatments, which were used as the feedstock for “bottom-up” microwave-assisted foaming and thermal imidization process, thereby leading to the formation of PIFs with regular three-dimensional near-spherical pores in vertical direction (parallel to the pore growth direction) and the aligned ellipsoidal strip-like pore structure in horizontal direction. The directional growth of foam pores resulted in anisotropic mechanical flexibility and thermal insulation performance. Moreover, PIFs possessed excellent thermal stability and flame retardancy with the initial thermal degradation temperature higher than 545 °C and limited oxygen index up to 58.8%. The PIFs exhibited exceptional thermal insulation performance with thermal conductivity values ranging from 0.0276 to 0.0517 W/(m·K) between 25 and 300 °C. Additionally, the PIFs demonstrated excellent irradiation tolerance, with the mechanical and thermal stability retention rate being above 96% after the irradiation experiment (radiation dosage: 1.15 × 105 Gy) using 60Co source. Thus, lightweight PIFs with superior high temperature thermal insulation performance, flame retardancy and irradiation tolerance were successfully prepared, which showed potential applications in aerospace, medical and nuclear power sectors.

Engineering phonon transport through cation disorder in dimensionally constricted high entropy MXene

Designing materials with low thermal conductivity is a crucial objective for applications in thermal insulation and thermoelectrics. Traditional methods such as doping, mechanical strain and introducing defects in perfect crystals have been widely explored to impede the flow of heat. This work introduces dimensional constriction and cationic disorder as novel avenues to manipulate lattice thermal conductivity (LTC). High entropy materials characterized by random distribution of multiple elements, creates a suitable environment for thermal insulation due to its configurational disorder and local lattice distortions. On the other hand, MXenes, derived from MAX-phase, have garnered considerable attention due to their unique structural attributes, leading to potential applications in catalysis and energy storage. Ti2AlC MAX-phase is examined to understand the impact of dimensional constriction on phonon transport of Ti2C with cationic disorder, i.e., (Ti0.25Nb0.25Cr0.25Ta0.25)2C. The exponential reduction in LTC of HE-MXene is attributed to disorder scattering that significantly limits phonon mean free path (MFP) and relaxation time. The spread of mode-resolved LTC with MFP highlights the influence of disorder on phonon scattering. This work provides a systematic approach to engineer LTC through dimensional constriction and cationic disorder, laying the foundation for tailored materials with desired thermal properties.

Utilizing discarded face masks to fabricate sustainable high-performance panels for enhanced building thermal and acoustic comfort

This study aims to design, fabricate, and optimize fibrous panels made of discarded polypropylene face masks (FMs) for application in sound absorption and thermal insulation. The discarded FMs were shredded and transformed into a fibrous mass using a Garnet machine. The resulting fibers, after being mixed with a bio-based binder, were molded based on an experimental design using response surface methodology in conjunction with the central composite experiment design (RSM-CCD) with five different thicknesses, densities, and blending ratios of spunbond to meltblown fabrics. The average of the sound absorption coefficients for the twelve one‐third‐octave bands from 200 to 2500 Hz (SAA) and effective thermal conductivity (Keff) of the panels were measured as the dependent parameters. These values were calculated within the ranges of 0.28–0.53 and 0.031–0.056 W/(mK), respectively. Additionally, the interactive effects of input variables on SAA and Keff of the manufactured panels were discussed. The quadratic and two-factor interaction models were proposed for optimizing the values of SAA and Keff, respectively. The optimal conditions were determined to achieve the maximum SAA and minimum Keff in a thickness of 26.7 mm, density of 135 kg/m3, and blending percentage of 32.4 %. Under these conditions, the measured values of SAA and Keff were 0.534 and 0.0279 W/mK, respectively. Finally, three fibrous panels were manufactured under optimal conditions, and their acoustic and thermal properties were measured. It was observed that excellent agreement exists between the model results and the experimental data with a 95% confidence level. The bending properties of the optimally designed panels were also investigated and the panels exhibited an impressive flexural strength of 2.1 MPa. Additionally, the fire performance of the panels was examined and all panels showed self-extinguishing properties. These findings suggest that panels made of discarded FMs hold promise as an eco-friendly and sustainable construction material for manufacturing acoustic and thermal insulation panels. Moreover, the frequency-dependent absorption coefficients of the panels were predicted using the Johnson-Champoux-Allard model.

Mechanically robust, thermal insulating sustainable foams fully derived from bamboo fibers through high temperature drying

The development of lignocellulosic foams has been gaining momentum due to their sustainability and biodegradability. However, lignocellulosic foams often have low preparation efficiency and poor mechanical properties, especially compression performance. Here, we constructed mechanically robust and thermal insulating cellulosic foams through high-temperature drying, in which all bamboo-sourced lignin-containing pulp fibers (LPF) and steam explosion fibers (SEF) were chosen as a skeleton and high solid fibrillated cellulose (HSFC) as a binder. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the characteristics of bamboo fibers and the HSFC addition on the formation, and mechanical- and thermal insulation performances of the resulting foams. The HSFC incorporation endowed the foams with excellent mechanical performance, the stress at 10 % strain and compressive modulus were 0.29 MPa and 4.4 MPa, respectively, which were 10-fold and 44-fold compared to LPF foam without HSFC. The LPF/HSFC possessed excellent energy absorption capacity (170 kJ/m3 under 40 % strain) as well as good thermal insulating performance (0.054 W/(m·K)). The LPF/HSFC foam with a much more homogeneous cellular structure outperformed the SEF/HSFC foam. This work suggests that the developed bamboo fiber foams hold promise for use in protective packaging and thermal insulation applications.

Mechanically robust and multifunctional Ti3C2Tx MXene composite aerogel for broadband EMI shielding

Because of its high electrical conductivity and low density, Ti3C2Tx MXene aerogel is thought to be a promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material. However, it is suffering from high reflection shielding and poor mechanical strength, which naturally hinders its practical application. Herein, we constructed PDMS-encapsulated Fe3O4/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/Ti3C2Tx MXene aerogel by combining the bi-directional freeze-drying technique with vacuum impregnation. The lamellar porous architecture and rational components endow the PDMS-encapsulated composite aerogel with superior EMI shielding properties in the X- and Ku-bands. Specifically, the optimal total shielding effectiveness (SET) of the PDMS-encapsulated composite aerogel (3 mm) could reach 43.6 dB, whereas the corresponding reflection shielding effectiveness (SER) is only 7 dB (approximately 16.7 % of SET). The shielding mechanism was also comprehensively disclosed. Simultaneously, contributed by the synergistic effect of lamellar porous structure and PDMS, the PDMS-encapsulated composite aerogel possesses satisfactory compressive strength (28.62 MPa) and tensile strength (1.67 MPa). Additionally, the PDMS-encapsulated composite aerogel also exhibits promising applications in thermal insulation.

Multilayer dielectric reflector using low-index nanolattices.

Dielectric mirrors based on Bragg reflection and photonic crystals have broad application in controlling light reflection with low optical losses. One key parameter in the design of these optical multilayers is the refractive index contrast, which controls the reflector performance. This work reports the demonstration of a high-reflectivity multilayer photonic reflector that consists of alternating layers of TiO2 films and nanolattices with low refractive index. The use of nanolattices enables high-index contrast between the high- and low-index layers, allowing high reflectivity with fewer layers. The broadband reflectance of the nanolattice reflectors with one to three layers has been characterized with peak reflectance of 91.9% at 527 nm and agrees well with theoretical optical models. The high-index contrast induced by the nanolattice layer enables a normalize reflectance band of Δλ/λo of 43.6%, the broadest demonstrated to date. The proposed nanolattice reflectors can find applications in nanophotonics, radiative cooling, and thermal insulation.
