Evaluation of CO2 Leakage Potential through Fault Instability in CO2 Geological Sequestration by Coupled THMC Modelling

A faulted saline aquifer system was simulated in a coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) framework to examine the potential breaching of the caprock seal from long-term CO2 sequestration. The pH of the brines steadily dropped from 7.5 to 4.7 due to the continuous injection of scCO2 (supercritical CO2), which was caused by the rapid dissolution of calcite in the reservoir and associated fault zones, alongside alterations in the concentrations of primary and secondary minerals within the formation. The increase in pore pressure with the continuous injection of scCO2 triggered fault reactivation at 6y with the resultant leakage of CO2 along the fault. This builds CO2 saturation inside the fault at 7y to six-fold higher than pre-slip. Continuing shear reactivation and creation of reactive surface area following the initial CO2 leakage accelerates dissolution/precipitation reactions, in turn further increasing porosity and permeability of the reservoir and fault. In particular, the permeability and porosity in the fault zone were increased by only 2% and 6%, respectively – staunched by competitive feedbacks in dissolution countered by precipitation that are individually much larger. Comparison of mineral concentrations adjacent to the fault before-and-after instability revealed that the development of shear failure also promotes the transport of reactivated minerals into the fault zone. Among them, feldspar changes most significantly in later stages, dominated by dissolution with the volume fraction decreasing by 80% and increasing the aqueous concentration of K+ by approximately an order of magnitude. However, secondary minerals counter this dissolution through precipitation with the volume fraction of kaolinite increasing by an order of magnitude compared with the original fraction. Finally, the evolution of the fault sealing coefficient (FS) demonstrates that the porosity and permeability exert a pivotal influence in controlling the self-sealing behavior in the basal of the fault, while the upper fault layer exhibits self-enhancing response. A notable observation is that changes in mineral ion concentrations in fault zones could be applied as a significant diagnostic signal to monitor fault stability and the potential for progress of self-sealing behavior.

Assessment of thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) performances of Ca-type bentonite-graphite mixtures as buffer materials for a high-level radioactive waste repository

The bentonite buffer material is the most important element of the engineered barrier system (EBS) used to dispose of high-level radioactive waste. Therefore, there are functional criteria or performance targets for the bentonite buffer material to maintain the long-term performance of the EBS for the entire disposal system. Thermal conductivity is a key parameter in the design of an EBS as it has the greatest influence on the buffer temperature. As the peak temperature of the buffer should not exceed the thermal design criterion, it is necessary to increase the thermal conductivity of the bentonite buffer material. Therefore, in this study, a small portion of graphite was added to Ca-type bentonite and thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical properties were measured separately, along with overall THMC (thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical) properties. Additionally, while thermal conductivity was examined for varying graphite contents, other properties such as hydraulic conductivity, swelling pressure, and unconfined compressive strength were tested with a 3 % graphite addition. In particular, the thermal conductivity was measured for 3 % graphite addition to the pure bentonite under the different dry densities and saturation conditions and a regression analysis was performed to predict thermal conductivity based on the dry density and degree of saturation values. Furthermore, the saturated hydraulic conductivity, swelling pressure, unconfined compressive strength, and sorption efficiency of cesium (Cs) ions in bentonite and bentonite-graphite mixtures were measured. Moreover, prototype buffer blocks for bentonite-graphite mixtures were manufactured to evaluate viability of production. The addition of 3 % graphite to pure bentonite satisfied the functional criteria of saturated hydraulic conductivity and swelling pressure when the dry density was 1.63 g/cm3 or higher, and the thermal conductivity of the bentonite-3 % graphite mixtures was 10–30 % higher than that of pure bentonite.

Research on the solution of the thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical coupling model based on the unified finite volume method framework

Heat extraction from hot dry rock (HDR) reservoirs involves complex thermal–hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) coupling processes, which pose significant challenges for efficient geothermal energy utilization. The current frameworks that combine the finite volume method (FVM) and finite element method (FEM) for THMC modeling based on the embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM) are separate, leading to complex implementations and hindering the development of efficient solutions. To address these issues, we propose an FVM-based THMC coupling model that solves fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reactions using the finite volume method (FVM), while mechanical deformation is addressed using the extended finite volume method (XFVM). The reaction module incorporates PHREEQC for multicomponent reactions under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. The model is validated against experimental data for mineral reactions under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, as well as XFEM and COMSOL simulations for displacement fields, confirming its accuracy and computational performance. Application results show that the temperature deviation between multicomponent and single-component models can reach up to 14 °C, underscoring the importance of incorporating multicomponent water–rock reactions in THMC coupling. This model accurately captures the spatiotemporal evolution of THMC processes and efficiently predicts long-term heat production in enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) reservoirs. It could significantly advance the ability to achieve more accurate and reliable predictions for the engineering development and efficient utilization of EGS reservoirs.

Microstructure evolution in bituminous-coal pyrolysis under in situ and stress-free conditions: a comparative study

A self-made triaxial testing machine with thermal–hydraulic–mechanical–chemical (THMC) coupling and a tubular heating furnace, combined with in situ (IS) micro-computed-tomography technology was utilized in this study. The evolution of pore-fissure (PF) structure parameters (porosity, PF scale distribution, effective PF volume ratio, and permeability) of bituminous coal under stress-free (SF) and IS conditions with temperature was investigated, and then the mechanism of experimental results was analyzed. Results showed that (1) under SF conditions, at 300–550 °C, the coal samples after pyrolysis are dominated by elongated large fissures, with PF structure parameters positively correlating with temperature. After 400 °C, the number of PFs increases, with most PFs having equivalent diameter (R) ≤ 100 μm. (2) Under IS conditions, coal sample fissures are dominated by elongated large fissures at 300–350 °C and by holes at 350–600 °C. (3) Under IS conditions at 300–600 °C, the PF structure parameters of coal samples initially decrease with temperature and subsequently increase. The number of PFs fluctuates within a certain range, and the PF scale distribution dynamically shifts with temperature. (4) After 300 °C, the PF structure parameters of bituminous coal under SF and IS conditions show a bipolar distribution with temperature. Therefore, the weakening effect of stress on the PF structure of coal samples should not be overlooked during IS pyrolysis mining of coal bodies.

A Multiphysics Model for the Near-Field Evolution of a Geological Repository of Radioactive Waste

The safety and robustness of Deep Geological Repositories (DGRs) are of paramount importance for the long-term management of spent nuclear fuel from electricity generation. The introduction of a multi-barrier system, which includes the host rock formation and an engineered barrier system (including the bentonite buffer), has been a widely used approach to ensure the safety of DGRs. The assessment of the long-term safety of DGRs involves the mathematical modeling of the coupled thermal–hydraulic–mechanical–chemical (THMC) processes that occur in the near-field of the DGRs and their impact on the behaviour and engineering properties of the bentonite buffer. This paper presents a review of the THMC-coupled processes that arise in the bentonite buffer as well as a mathematical model governing such coupled processes. The model is verified against existing analytical solutions and validated against measured data of a thermal diffusion experiment in a sand bentonite column. Also, scoping analyses were performed to assess the influence of coupled THM processes on solute transport in clayrocks. The results of the numerical model closely matched those of the analytical solutions and experimental data demonstrating the capability of the provided mathematical model as well as the numerical approach in enhancing our comprehension of DGR behaviour. This enhanced comprehension will be valuable for safety prediction and assessment in the context of DGRs. The work presented in this paper is part of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s (CNSC) regulatory research to gain independent knowledge on the safety of the geological disposal of radioactive waste.

A fully coupled Hydraulic Mechanical Chemical approach applied to cementitious material damage due to carbonation

Coupled Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical-Chemical (THMC) approaches may be important for assessing the long-term durability of cementitious materials. We present a multiphysics approach to overcome past limitations of THMC modelling and validate it based on experimental results of accelerated carbonation tests. Our numerical approach rests on a sequential coupling between Hytec and Cast3m. Hytec computes the evolution of hydraulic and mineralogical fields allowing to compute the micromechanical properties (e.g. Young’s modulus). The mineral reactions generate tensile stresses and Cast3M computes the associated strain tensors and the damage evolution represented by the opening or sealing of cracks, impacting subsequent reactive transport processes. Our approach manages to qualitatively represent the crack patterns and non-uniform degradation depths observed on microtomographic images of carbonated cement samples, which can only be explained by the coupled dynamics of chemical and mechanical processes. Our approach can be extended to a wide range of cement-concrete pathologies and contexts.

Modeling of thermal–hydraulic–mechanical–chemical​ acid fracturing with discretized virtual internal bond

The discretized virtual internal bond (DVIB) is further developed to simulate the thermal–hydraulic–mechanical–chemical (THMC) coupled acid fracturing process. In addition to HMC-coupled DVIB, where the mechanical bond simultaneously functions as the acid fluid transportation channel and the chemical reaction site, the bond is further considered as the thermal conductivity channel in the THMC-DVIB. The corresponding governing equations, coupling method and the stabilized solving algorithm are developed. By this method, the THMC fields are unified in one bond and the original complex THMC coupling problem is reduced to a one-dimensional problem. The higher temperature can accelerate the chemical reaction rate. Hence, it has an obvious influence on the acidization. Meanwhile, it impacts the mechanical field through the additive bond deformation induced by temperature variation. The simulation examples suggest that this method can capture the THMC coupling effect well. It provides a simple and effective method to simulate the acid fracturing process in geothermal carbonate reservoir.

Implementation and verification of a user‐defined element (UEL) for coupled thermal‐hydraulic‐mechanical‐chemical (THMC) processes in saturated geological media

AbstractEfficient and accurate modeling of the coupled thermal‐hydraulic‐mechanical‐chemical (THMC) processes in various rock formations is indispensable for designing energy geo‐structures such as underground repositories for high‐level nuclear wastes. This work focuses on developing and verifying an implicit finite element solver for generic coupled THMC problems in geological settings. Starting from the mass, momentum, and energy balance laws, a specialized set of governing equations and a thermoporoelastic constitutive model is derived. This system is then solved by an implicit finite element (FE) scheme. Specifically, the residuals and the Jacobians are scripted in a user‐defined element (UEL) subroutine which is then combined with the general‐purpose FE software Abaqus Standard to solve initial‐boundary value problems. Considering the complexity of the system, the UEL development follows a stepwise manner by first solving the coupled hydraulic‐mechanical (HM) and thermal‐hydraulic‐mechanical (THM) equations before moving on to the full THMC problem. Each implementation step consists of at least one verification test by comparing computed results with closed‐form analytical solutions to ensure that the various coupling effects are correctly realized. To demonstrate the robustness of the algorithm and to validate the UEL, a three‐dimensional case study is performed with reference to the in‐situ heating test of ATLAS at Belgium in 1980s. A hypothetical radionuclide leakage event is then simulated by activating the chemical‐concentration degree of freedom and prescribing a constant high concentration at the heater's surface. The model predicts a limited contaminated regime after six years considering both diffusion and advection effects on species transport.

A 3D modeling study of effects of heterogeneity on system responses in methane hydrate reservoirs with horizontal well depressurization

Production tests in marine methane-bearing sediments have been carried out worldwide. Pilot horizontal well tests have exhibited the potential of using horizontal well depressurization for methane hydrate production. Many studies have focused on the 2D thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) responses induced by horizontal wells, which targeted certain vertical planes penetrating the well, while 3D numerical modeling of the associated heat and mass transfer behaviors and induced geomechanical responses can provide behaviors not captured by 2D modeling. Additionally, it can give elaborated results in heterogeneous cases. This study investigates the effects of heterogeneity caused by interlayers on the coupled THMC behaviors in a 3D domain depressurized by a horizontal wellbore. Full geomechanics is considered in the model. The model is verified against a widely used benchmark problem. Numerical results show that, due to the nature of 3D fluid flow induced by depressurization, flow patterns in vertical and horizontal directions are different, which leads to the phenomenon that the system response patterns captured by 3D THMC modeling are different from those in 2D THMC modeling. 2D THMC modeling may simplify the coupled THMC system response with the presence of horizontal wells. Also, the system response is mainly governed by the thickness of hydrate-free interlayers in heterogeneous cases. The effect of heterogeneity on pressure is observed in all investigated locations while its effect on temperature and displacement is only observed in planes penetrating the wellbore. The negative impact of heterogeneity on methane production is magnified by thicker hydrate-free interlayers.

Molecular dynamics simulation of thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical properties of bentonite clay at 298 to 373 K

Bentonite, a fine-grained geologic material rich in smectite clay, is considered for use in the isolation of high-level radioactive waste (HLRW) because of its low hydraulic permeability, high swelling pressure, and geochemical stability. A complicating factor in this application is that heat released by nuclear waste can trigger complex coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) phenomena within the barrier. Prediction of these phenomena using large-scale simulators, which typically examine problems on scales of 10−2 to 104 m, is inhibited by insufficient knowledge of the material properties of bentonite and their dependence on temperature. Here, these properties were evaluated using replica-exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) simulations of a clay assemblage containing 27 Na-smectite nanoparticles with full atomistic-level resolution solvated using 187,131 water molecules. The simulations yielded predictions of heat capacity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansivity, hydraulic conductivity, and water and ion diffusivity at temperatures of 298 to 373 K. Results showed that temperature modulates the capacity of clay barriers to transfer heat, fluids, and chemical species to different degrees. Material properties of hydrated smectite predicted on scales of tens of nanometers and nanoseconds were consistent with the properties of bentonite measured on scales of centimeters and days.

Fracture initiation and propagation of supercritical carbon dioxide fracturing in calcite-rich shale: A coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical simulation

The initiation and propagation mechanisms of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) fracturing are more complex than those of hydraulic fracturing in calcite-rich shale due to the temperature‒pressure sensitivity of scCO2 and scCO2-brine-rock interactions. In this study, we present an enhanced thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) simulator called CMPSF, which incorporates a rock damage model and a CO2 physical property model into the COMSOL-MATLAB-PHREEQC (CMP) coupling framework via MATLAB. Furthermore, the coupling procedure of CMPSF is optimized from a previous sequential non-iterative approach to a sequential partly-iterative approach. We then utilize CMPSF validated with numerical and experimental examples to analyze the evolution of THMC fields and examine the impact of calcite content and injection temperature on fracture initiation and propagation of scCO2 fracturing in calcite-rich shale. The simulation results reveal that the decreased mass fraction of calcite is 1.5‰ and the porosity increment from calcite dissolution is 0.33‰ at most within 12 min. A higher calcite content and injection temperature lead to a decrease in fracture initiation pressure and an increase in rock damage ratio. Specifically, as the calcite content increases from 50 wt% to 80 wt%, the fracture initiation pressure decreases by 0.1 MPa, and the final damage ratio increases by 0.25%. As the injection temperature increases from 30 °C to 60 °C, the fracture initiation pressure decreases by 4.3 MPa, and the final damage ratio increases by 1.55%. Calcite dissolution has a minor impact on fracture initiation and propagation at the early stage of scCO2 fracturing only from the perspective of affecting seepage, and its long-term effects require further investigation. Our findings provide insight into the complex THMC coupling processes of scCO2 fracturing in calcite-rich shale.

THMC Fully Coupled Model of Natural Gas Hydrate under Damage Effect and Parameter Sensitivity Analysis

In order to study the influence of damage on the gas production of natural gas hydrate, a multi-physical field theoretical model considering damage effect and coupling thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) was established by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The THMC model establishes the relationship between the elastic modulus of hydrate sediment and hydrate saturation during the whole process of hydrate decomposition. The THC (thermal-hydraulic-chemical) and THMC fully coupled models not considering or considering the damage effect were compared and analyzed, and the reliability of the THMC fully coupled model was verified. On this basis, the deformation, permeability and damage of hydrate sediments under different initial hydrate saturations and different depressurization amplitudes, as well as the hydrate gas production rate and cumulative gas production, are analyzed. The results showed that higher initial hydrate saturation inhibited the development of damage, maintained stable gas production and increased cumulative gas production. Larger depressurization promoted damage and increased cumulative gas production, but it was easy to cause stability problems.

Gas permeability change with deformation and cracking of a sandstone under triaxial compression

In this study, a thermal–hydraulic–mechanical–chemical (THMC) multi-field coupling triaxial cell was used to study systematically the evolution of gas permeability and the deformation characteristics of sandstone. The effects of confining, axial and gas pressure on gas permeability characteristics were fully considered in the test. The gas permeability of sandstone decreases with increasing confining pressure. When the confining pressure is low, the variation of gas permeability is greater than that of gas permeability at high confining pressure. The gas injection pressure significantly affects the gas permeability evolution of sandstone. As the gas injection pressure increases, the gas permeability of sandstone tends to decrease. At the same confining pressure, the gas permeability of the sample during the unloading path is less than the gas permeability of the sample in the loading path. When axial pressure is applied, it has a significant influence on the permeability evolution of sandstone. When the axial pressure is less than 30 MPa, it significantly influences the permeability evolution of sandstone. At axial pressures greater than 30 MPa, the permeability decreases as the axial pressure increases. Finally, the micro-pore/fracture structure of the sample after the gas permeability test was observed using 3D X-ray CT imaging.

Investigation of the various properties of several candidate additives as buffer materials

Bentonite buffer material is a critical component in an engineered barrier system (EBS) for disposing high-level radioactive waste (HLW). The bentonite buffer material protects the disposal canister from groundwater penetration and releases decay heat to the surrounding rock mass; thus, it should possess high thermal conductivity, low hydraulic conductivity, and moderate swelling pressure to safely dispose the HLWs. Bentonite clay is a suitable buffer material because it satisfies the safety criteria. Several additives have been suggested as mixtures with bentonite to increase the thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) properties of bentonite buffer materials. Therefore, this study investigated the geotechnical, mineralogical, and THMC properties of several candidate additives such as sand, graphite, granite, and SiC powders. Datasets obtained in this study can be used to select adequate additives to improve the THMC properties of the buffer material.

Multi-physics numerical analyses for predicting the alterations in permeability and reactive transport behavior within single rock fractures depending on temperature, stress, and fluid pH conditions

The aim of the current study was to establish a validated numerical model for addressing the changes in permeability and reactive transport behavior within rock fractures based on the fluid pH under coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) conditions. Firstly, a multi-physics reactive transport model was proposed, considering the geochemical reactions that depend on the temperature, stress, and fluid chemistry conditions (e.g., fluid pH and solute concentrations), as well as the changes in permeability in the rock fractures driven by these reactions, after which the correctness of the model implementation was verified by solving the 1D reactive transport problem as a fundamental benchmark. Secondly, the validity of the model against actual rock fractures was investigated by utilizing the model to replicate the measurements of the evolving permeability and the effluent element concentrations in single granite fractures obtained by means of two flow-through experiments using deionized water (pH ∼ 6) and a NaOH aqueous solution (pH ∼ 11) as permeants under stressed, temperature-elevated conditions. The model predictions efficiently followed the changes in fracture permeability over time measured by both experiments. Additionally, the observed difference in the changing rates, which may contribute to the difference in the fluid pH between the two experiments, was also captured exactly by the predictions. Moreover, in terms of the effluent element concentrations, among all the elements targeted for measurement, the concentrations of most elements were replicated by the model within one order of discrepancy. Overall, it can be concluded that the developed model should be valid for estimating the changes in permeability and reactive transport behavior within rock fractures induced by geochemical reactions which depend on the fluid pH under coupled THMC conditions.

Novel insights into the long-term retardation of GMZ01 to U(VI): based on molecular dynamics and numerical simulation

The long-term retardation performance of Gaomiaozi Na-bentonite (GMZ01) to uranium (U(VI)) is still technically challenging due to its high toxicity and the complexity of environmental conditions. This present groundbreaking study fills this gap by using molecular dynamics (MD) technique combined with numerical simulation to study the long-term retardation behavior of GMZ01 to high-level waste (HLW) under the thermal–hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) coupling conditions in Beishan groundwater from micro to macro for the first time. The results show that in compacted GMZ01, (1) uranyl combines with groundwater substances in the process of self-diffusion to form a cluster, and its self-diffusion is mainly affected by the species size, the net charge, the bonding numbers of U-ob and the bond numbers of OS-Na-ob. (2) The upper limit adsorption capacity of montmorillonite for uranyl is 1.359E-3 site/Å2. (3) The migration of U(VI) in GMZ01 is dominated by diffusion behavior. (4) The GMZ01 with a dry density of 1.7 g/cm3 and a thickness of 0.6 m can guarantee that the repository has a safe period of 10,000 years under 60 °C. This combined method provides a totally new direction for studying the migration of HLW and the design of repository under deep geological disposal.

A novel framework for coupled THMC analysis employing explicit rock fracture

A novel coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) simulator for fractured porous rock was developed in the present study based on explicit fracture models. This work is an attempt to describe the spatial coupled phenomena sensitive to fracture generation within rock masses by using explicit fracture representation. The simulator was then applied to numerically predict the long-term evolution in the permeability of a rock mass working as a natural barrier within a geological disposal facility of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). The predicted results showed that the fractures generated due to the excavation of the disposal cavity drastically increased the rock permeability around the cavity and that the gradual decrease in permeability with time was caused only within specific fractures where the pressure solution had been activated after the disposal of the waste package into the cavity. The maximum decrease in permeability within the fractures was more than two orders of magnitude. Overall, it was confirmed that the developed simulator can capture the heterogeneous and local permeability evolutions among multiple fractures due to geochemical creep over the long term.

Numerical study of the chemo-mechanical behavior of FEBEX bentonite in nuclear waste disposal based on the Barcelona expansive model

Experimental studies show that compacted bentonite used as a backfill material for nuclear waste repository experiences strong coupling between chemical and mechanical processes. In this paper, we use a dual-structure expansive soil model, referred to as the Barcelona Expansive Model (BExM), to predict the behavior of bentonite buffer in subsurface emplacement tunnels for high-level radioactive waste. After emplacement, the bentonite is subjected to complex and coupled Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical-Chemical (THMC) processes. The BExM constitutive model is implemented in a multi-phase reactive transport and geomechanics simulator, TOUGHREACT-FLAC3D, and the model is verified with one benchmark test on FEBEX bentonite. We utilize a one-way Chemo-Mechanical (C-M) coupling approach, in which chemical changes affect the mechanical behavior of bentonite through the BExM linked with the evolution of mass fraction of smectite, exchangeable cation concentration, and ionic strength via osmotic suction. The parameters of the new coupled model for FEBEX bentonite are calibrated against a series of laboratory experiments with various salinity solutions. Finally, coupled THMC modeling is conducted for a generic argillite repository with bentonite buffer under high temperature, focusing on the long-term chemical change and its effect on the mechanical process.

Calibration of the thermo-hydro-mechanical parameters of the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone and the modelling of the ALC experiment

Andra performs a wide range of in-situ experiments at its Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory (MHM URL). The purpose of these experiments is to study the feasibility of a radioactive waste repository in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone formation (COx). An important research program has been conducted by Andra since 2005 to investigate THM response of the COx to a thermal load through laboratory and in situ experimentations. A step-by-step approach is followed, which starts with small scale heating boreholes (TED experiment) and extends to full-scale (ALC experiment). Modelling and interpretation of the TED and ALC experiments are conducted in the context of the Task E within the DECOVALEX-2019 framework. DECOVALEX-2019 is a multidisciplinary, co-operative international research effort focused on modelling coupled Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical-Chemical (THMC) processes. Based on the TED experiment measurements, the THM parameters of the COx are calibrated through a fully-coupled THM model using COMSOL. Then, the ALC experiment is successfully blind predicted and interpretatively modelled using the calibrated THM parameters of the COx and the proposed coupled THM model.
