Tracking Rodinia Into the Neoproterozoic: New Paleomagnetic Constraints From the Jacobsville Formation

AbstractThe paleogeography of Laurentia throughout the Neoproterozoic is critical for reconstructing global paleogeography due to its central position in the supercontinent Rodinia. We develop a new paleomagnetic pole from red siltstones and fine‐grained sandstones of the early Neoproterozoic Jacobsville Formation which is now constrained to be ca. 990 Ma in age. High‐resolution thermal demagnetization experiments resolve detrital remanent magnetizations held by hematite. These directions were reoriented within siltstone intraclasts and pass intraformational conglomerate tests—giving confidence that the magnetization is detrital and primary. An inclination‐corrected mean paleomagnetic pole position for the Jacobsville Formation indicates that Laurentia's motion slowed down significantly following the onset of the Grenvillian orogeny. Prior rapid plate motion associated with closure of the Unimos Ocean between 1,110 and 1,090 Ma transitioned to slow drift of Laurentia across the equator in the late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic. We interpret the distinct position of this well‐dated pole from those in the Grenville orogen that have been assigned a similar age to indicate that the ages of the poles associated with the Grenville Loop likely need to be revised to be younger due to prolonged exhumation.

Paleomagnetism and age of the Leucite Hills Volcanic complex, Wyoming: Implications for eruptive history, landscape evolution, and the geomagnetic instability timescale (GITS)

The Leucite Hills Volcanic Field, southwest Wyoming comprises two dozen volcanic features including necks, flows, dikes, and plugs. It has been the focus of many petrologic studies as its volcanic and shallow intrusive rocks are one of the only surficial manifestations of ultrapotassic lamproite. We build on paleomagnetic findings of Sheriff and Shive (1980) by providing further paleomagnetic data from the Boars Tusk dike and Black Rock flows. We also characterize the magnetic mineral assemblage of these lamproites. Principal component analysis of alternating field (AF) and thermal demagnetization data indicate that the dike and breccias of Boars Tusk record a reversed magnetic polarity and the Black Rock lava records a normal polarity, both consistent with previous findings. This recording is typically carried by minerals with coercivities >15 mT and susceptibility measurements indicate magnetite, maghemite, and titanomagnetite as likely magnetic carriers. AF and thermal demagnetization experiments evince secondary magnetizations held by lower coercivity grains, likely caused by lightning strikes. 40Ar/39Ar incremental heating experiments from Boars Tusk and Black Rock give plateau ages of ∼2500 ka and ∼900 ka, respectively. Recent advances in the chronology of geomagnetic field reversals and excursions during the Quaternary permit integration of the Boars Tusk dike into the lower Matuyama chron, whereas the Black Rock lavas most probably record the Kamikatsura excursion. Notably, Black Rock records high inclinations that suggest the short-lived excursion achieved a full geomagnetic reversal, something not observed at other localities recording the Kamikatsura excursion. The Leucite Hills offer further opportunities to refine the Quaternary geomagnetic instability time scale (GITS), and to improve understanding of the eruptive and geomorphic evolution of this unusual volcanism.

Magnetic characterization of the Daule chondrite (Ecuador's first meteorite fall): The case of elusive tetrataenite?

We investigated the magnetic properties of Ecuador's first reported meteorite fall (March 23, 2008), the Daule ordinary chondrite (L5, S4, W0) using thermomagnetic analyses at high and cryogenic temperatures, analyses of magnetic hysteresis and first-order reversal curves, and thermal and alternating field (AF) demagnetization of natural remanent magnetization (NRM). The mineralogical and chemical composition of Daule was examined using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Most methods indicate that the magnetic properties of Daule are dominated by multidomain FeNi alloys (kamacite) with Ni content varying between ∼4% and ∼17%. However, backfield demagnetization (BFD) analyses revealed the presence of high-coercivity tetrataenite that survived shock metamorphism. The differential survival of tetrataenite at the millimeter scale indicates heterogeneity of the impact-related temperature and pressure fields within the Daule meteorite. BFD curves may serve as an efficient tool for identifying minor amounts of tetrataenite that otherwise cannot be discerned from the signal from magnetically-soft FeNi mineral phases by methods based on induced magnetization. Thermal demagnetization experiments unveiled the presence of a well-defined characteristic component of NRM, which remains resistant to AF demagnetization. We interpret this component as a pre-impact thermochemical remanence carried by tetrataenite and acquired during the thermal metamorphism of the parent body. At cryogenic temperatures, the magnetic properties of Daule are dominated by low-Mg magnesiochromite with the Curie temperature at 60–70 K.

Archaeointensity record of weak field recurrence in Japan: new data from Late Yayoi and Kofun ceramic artifacts

Summary We present new absolute archaeointensity data from six archaeological sites situated in the Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The materials studied are well-dated fragments from pottery, ceramic coffins and haniwa artifacts. Their ages range from 160 AD to 675 AD, covering the Late Yayoi and Kofun periods. Rock magnetic experiments suggest the presence of magnetite and/or Ti-magnetite as the main carrier of the remanence, with a possible minor contribution of higher coercivity minerals. After thermal demagnetization experiments, the most magnetically stable samples were selected for archaeointensity analysis performed following the double-heating method proposed by Thellier and modified by Coe. Partial thermoremanent magnetization (pTRM) checks and pTRM tail-checks were performed for monitoring possible chemical alterations during heating. All measurements were corrected for both anisotropy and cooling-rate effects. Successful archaeointensity determinations, following rigorous selection criteria, were obtained for samples from all the investigated archaeological sites. Compared with literature data from Japan, the new high-quality data show significantly lower intensity values. They also reveal possible fast secular variation changes during the Late Yayoi period and very weak geomagnetic intensity field around 630 AD. Such values offer evidence of a possible recurrence of weak intensity field in East Asia, suggesting an ancient recurrence of the West Pacific Anomaly. The new data might change the archaeomagnetic field models interpretations in the area, even though more data are still necessary to better understand the secular variation in Japan and the temporal evolution of the geomagnetic field's behavior in East Asia.

Rapid eruption of the Emeishan continental flood basalts: New paleomagnetic and geochronologic constraints

The duration of the eruption of the Emeishan large igneous province is hotly debated. We conducted a magnetostratigraphic and geochronological study of the core area of the large igneous province in the Binchuan area of Yunnan Province, southwestern China, in order to constrain the duration of the eruption. The results of detailed thermal demagnetization experiments revealed two remanent magnetic components from the volcanic rocks of 11 composite sections. A low-temperature component separated below 300 °C is interpreted as a recent viscous remanence. Additionally, reliable characteristic remanent magnetizations were revealed above 400 °C, with unblocking temperatures up to 580−680 °C, which passed the fold test and record three magnetozones. Zircons from the felsic ignimbrites exposed in the final stage of the mafic volcanism are dated to 258.2 ± 0.7 Ma (n = 15; mean square of weighted deviates = 1.3) by sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe. Stratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic correlations of the Emeishan basalts in the Binchuan sections indicate that the eruption of the mafic rocks of the Emeishan large igneous province can be clearly divided into early (reverse polarity subzone), middle (normal polarity subzone), and late (reverse polarity subzone) stages, with a total duration of less than 1.7 m.y. (260.8−259.1 Ma). However, by combining this chronology with previously reported conodont biostratigraphic results from locations around the Emeishan large igneous province, and comparing the dominant normal-reverse polarity sequence in the Emeishan large igneous province with the geomagnetic polarity time scale, we obtain a much shorter duration of the main eruptive stage of <0.8 m.y. (260.4−259.6 Ma). About three quarters of the basalts of the Emeishan large igneous province record have a normal polarity and erupted within 0.4 m.y., while the other quarter, mainly distributed in the central zone, shows a reverse polarity and much shorter duration. Given the short duration of the eruption, gas volatiles would have been released into the atmosphere at high rates, which might provide a causal link between the rapid eruption and the end-Guadalupian mass extinction. Before the mantle plume eruption, localized eruptions probably occurred. After eruption of the mafic Emeishan flood basalts, an acid volcanic eruption occurred in the early Wuchiapingian, which was sporadically distributed in the Emeishan large igneous province.

Experimental test of the cooling rate effect on blocking temperatures in stepwise thermal demagnetization

SUMMARYUpon cooling, most rocks acquire a thermoremanent magnetization (TRM); the cooling rate at which this happens not only affects palaeointensity estimates, but also their unblocking temperatures in stepwise thermal demagnetization experiments, which is important, for example, to estimate volcanic emplacement temperatures. Traditional single-domain (SD) theory of magnetic remanence relates relaxation times to blocking temperatures— the blocking temperature is the temperature at which the relaxation time becomes shorter than the experimental timescale—and therefore strictly only applies to remanence acquisition mechanisms at constant temperatures (i.e. viscous remanent magnetizations, VRMs). A theoretical framework to relate (constant) blocking temperatures to (time-varying) cooling rates exists, but this theory has very limited experimental verification—partly due to the difficulty of accurately knowing the cooling rates of geological materials. Here we present an experimental test of this ‘cooling rate effect on blocking temperatures’ through a series of demagnetization experiments of laboratory-induced TRMs with controlled cooling rates. The tested cooling rates span about 1 order of magnitude and are made possible through (1) extremely accurate demagnetization experiments using a low-temperature magnetic properties measurement system (MPMS) and (2) the use of a ‘1-step-only’ stepwise thermal demagnetization protocol where the relaxation process is measured over time. In this way the relaxation time corresponding to the blocking temperature is measured, which can be done to much higher accuracy than measuring the blocking temperature directly as done in traditional stepwise thermal demagnetization experiments. Our experiments confirm that the cooling rate relationship holds to high accuracy for ideal magnetic recorders, as shown for a synthetic weakly interacting SD magnetoferritin sample. A SD-dominated low-Ti titanomagnetite Tiva Canyon Tuff sample, however, showed that natural samples are unlikely to be sufficiently ‘ideal’ to meet the theoretical predictions to high accuracy—the experimental data agrees only approximately with the theoretical predictions, which may potentially affect blocking temperature estimates in stepwise thermal demagnetization experiments. Moreover, we find a strongly enhanced cooling rate effect on palaeointensities for even marginally non-ideal samples (up to 43 per cent increase in pTRM for a halving of the cooling rate).

Primary and Secondary Red Bed Magnetization Constrained by Fluvial Intraclasts

AbstractThe magnetization of hematite‐bearing sedimentary rocks provides critical records of geomagnetic reversals and paleogeography. However, the timing of hematite remanent magnetization acquisition is typically difficult to constrain. While detrital hematite in sediment can lead to a primary depositional remanent magnetization, alteration of minerals through interaction with oxygen can lead to the postdepositional formation of hematite. In this study, we use exceptionally preserved fluvial sediments within the 1.1‐billion‐year‐old Freda Formation to gain insight into the timing of hematite remanence acquisition and its magnetic properties. This deposit contains siltstone intraclasts that were eroded from a coexisting lithofacies and redeposited within channel sandstone. Thermal demagnetization, petrography, and rock magnetic experiments on these clasts reveal two generations of hematite. One population of hematite demagnetized at the highest unblocking temperatures and records directions that rotated along with the clasts. This component is a primary detrital remanent magnetization. The other component is removed at lower unblocking temperatures and has a consistent direction throughout the intraclasts. This component is held by finer‐grained hematite that grew and acquired a chemical remanent magnetization following deposition resulting in a population that includes superparamagnetic nanoparticles in addition to remanence‐carrying grains. The data support the interpretation that magnetizations of hematite‐bearing sedimentary rocks held by >400‐nm grains that unblock close to the Néel temperature are more likely to record magnetization from the time of deposition. This primary magnetization can be successfully isolated from cooccurring authigenic hematite through high‐resolution thermal demagnetization.

Remagnetization of the Lower Ordovician Hongshiya Formation of the southwestern Yangtze Block

Large-scale block migration has been proposed based on Early and early Late Ordovician paleomagnetic data for the South China Block (SCB). However, this is anomalous in terms of the previously reconstructed affinity between the SCB and East Gondwana. A paleomagnetic and petrographic reassessment of the Lower Ordovician sedimentary rocks is therefore necessary to assess the reliability of the Early Ordovician paleopole of the SCB. Consequently, we obtained paleomagnetic data from 47 sites at five localities of the SCB. For most specimens, detailed thermal demagnetization experiments yielded viscous components at ~120 °C, while the stable characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) was isolated up to 680 °C. The ChRM passed the fold test and hematite is identified as the remanence carrier. The samples give the site-mean ChRM direction Ds/Is = 313.0°/61.9° (ks = 47.1, α95 = 3.2°) after tilt correction (five localities, 47 sites). Although the ChRM direction passed the fold test that was likely acquired before the Tertiary, petrographic studies reveal the occurrence of widespread secondary hematite in the specimens, indicating that the rocks were remagnetized after deposition. The average paleomagnetic direction overlaps with the Jurassic paleomagnetic direction from sampling areas of the southwestern SCB, implying that the remagnetization event occurred during the Jurassic. The Early Ordovician paleopole of the SCB is therefore urgently needed for plate reconstruction of the SCB within Gondwana.

Timing of volcanism and initiation of rifting in the Omo-Turkana depression, southwest Ethiopia: Evidence from paleomagnetism

Lava flows of the Gombe Group basalt cover the base of the Omo-Turkana rift in southwestern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. Paleomagnetic study results on these basalts are integrated with previous geochronologic data to better constrain the timing of volcanism and rifting in the area. A total of 80 drilled core samples were collected from nine sites. Experimental methods of Alternating Field (AF) demagnetization, Thermal (TH) demagnetization and Isothermal Remanent Magnetization (IRM) experiments are performed to unravel components of magnetizations. Two components of Natural Remnant Magnetization (NRM) directions are identified; the first one considered as Viscous Remanent Magnetization (VRM) is removed by 5–25 mT AF or a temperature of 120 °C–250 °C, the second component isolated after these steps defined a straight-line segment directed towards the origin and is interpreted as the Characteristic Remanent Magnetization (ChRM). In the IRM Acquisition experiment all analyzed samples showed a sharp rise in acquisition and reached to their saturation magnetization by an applied field of 300 mT. This together with the AF demagnetization and TH demagnetization behaviors suggest pseudo single domain titanomagnetite as a dominant magnetic carrier of the remanence. From a total of nine sites, six sites are reversed polarity, two sites are normal polarity and pass the reversal test of McFadden and McElhinny (1990) while one site is of erratic behavior probably due to lightning strike. The mean direction for the reversed polarity is DS = 186.1°, IS = −1.9° (N = 2, KS = 38.8, α95 = 10.9°) and that for the normal polarity is DS = 348.4°, IS = 4.6° (N = 6, K = 378.9, α95 = 12.9°). The overall mean direction DS = 1.7°, IS = 2.6° (N = 8, KS = 34.2, α95 = 9.6°), is statistically identical to the expected mean direction Ds = 2.1°, Is = 7.8° (N = 26, α95 = 2.3) obtained from the African Apparent Polar Waner Path (APWP) curve of African plate for a mean age of 4.25 Ma (Besse and Courtillot, 1991, 2003). Considering the upper age control of Moiti tuff (3.98 Ma) and Naibar tuff (4.02 Ma) which have not been intruded by the Gombe Group basalts; with the obtained paleomagnetic result the Gombe Group basalts are correlable with the late Gilbert Chron of Cande and Kent (1995) specifically at and just above the Cochiti normal sub-Chron (4.18 Ma–4.29 Ma) consistent with paleomagnetic study from the basal members of the Shungura Formation (Kidane et al., 2014). Petrographically and geochemically similar basalts (Haileab et al., 2004) in northern Kenya are reported to have the same polarity. This suggests the longitudinally distributed lava flows (Gombe Group) in Northern Kenya and southwestern Ethiopia probably had erupted in a short period between 4.18 Ma–4.29 Ma. This similarity indicates that the present architecture of the basin might have been attained soon after the emplacement of the Gombe Group basalt.

Dating Icelandic glacial floods using a new viscous remanent magnetization protocol

Abstract A new protocol using the viscous remanent magnetization (VRM) of boulders to date cataclysmic geological events such as tsunamis, glacial floods, and landslides is presented and its performance is assessed against two jökulhlaups (glacial floods) of known age in Iceland. High-intensity jökulhlaups have the ability to break off large boulders from bedrock and emplace and rotate them. These rocks originally carried a remanent magnetization parallel to the geomagnetic field during their formation. After being rotated by the flood, they acquire a VRM parallel with Earth’s magnetic field. In continuous thermal demagnetization experiments the unblocking temperature of the VRM can be determined, and subsequent rock magnetic VRM acquisition experiments can be used to establish a relationship between the unblocking temperature and the acquisition time, from which the time since the flood can be determined. The protocol was tested on 44 boulders from 2 historical jökulhlaups in Iceland and found to yield good order-of-magnitude estimates: 72 yr (confidence limits 11–360 yr) versus known 155 yr at the Sólheimajökull jökulhlaup and 290 yr (confidence limits 80–2300 yr) versus known 288 yr for the Kotarjökull jökulhlaup. The method can therefore be a valuable tool for future dating of cataclysmic events.

Paleomagnetic field reconstruction from mixtures of titanomagnetites

Stepwise thermal demagnetization and alternating field (AF) demagnetization are commonly used in paleomagnetic studies to isolate remanent magnetic components of different origins. The magnetically hardest, i.e. highest unblocking temperature/peak field component is often interpreted as the primary magnetization and magnetically softer components as subsequent remagnetizations due to geological events posterior to the formation of the rock, such as reheating or formation of new magnetic minerals. The correct interpretation of the sequence of the geological events such as tectonic rotations from paleomagnetic data often relies on correctly attributing the observed magnetic directions to the remanence carriers and acquisition mechanisms. Using a numerical model to simulate remanence acquisition and stepwise thermal and AF demagnetization experiments, we show that the presence of mixtures of different magnetic minerals, such as magnetite and titanomagnetites of varying titanium-content can have very significant effects on Zijderveld plots. In thermal demagnetization experiments a spurious third component at intermediate temperatures or a continuous curvature may arise from an overlap of the primary remanence with a subsequent thermal or viscous remagnetization carried by small-grained iron-rich magnetite and large-grained titanium-rich titanomagnetite. AF demagnetization plots of magnetic mixtures are even more complex: primary and secondary remanences carried by different minerals may appear as either three or four components in Zijderveld plots. During alternating field demagnetization the highest coercivity component is not necessarily equivalent to the primary remanence and does not necessarily correspond to the highest temperature component in an analogous thermal demagnetization experiment, i.e., the primary remanence direction cannot be recovered. The effects are shown to be due to the different responsiveness of magnetite and titanomagnetites towards viscous or thermoviscous remanence acquisition: remanent magnetizations with long acquisition times are more effectively recorded by titanium-poor minerals, while short acquisition times are equally well recorded by titanium-rich minerals. In demagnetization experiments on laboratory timescales, the relative contribution of two minerals to Zijderveld plots differs to the relative contribution of remanence acquisition over geological timescales, leading to overlapping components in Zijderveld plots. The model was also used to simulate paleointensity (ancient magnetic field intensity) experiments and it was found that the grain distribution affects the slope of Arai plots, but is negligible compared to the effect of the cooling rate of NRM acquisition. The simulations suggest that for slowly cooled rocks a cooling rate correction of up to 1.5 to 1.6 may be required depending on the mineralogy.

Effects of titanomagnetite reordering processes on thermal demagnetization and paleointensity experiments

AbstractTitanomagnetite (Fe3‐xTixO4, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1) is a common, naturally occurring magnetic mineral critical to many paleomagnetic studies. Underlying most interpretations is the assumption that, lacking chemical alteration, Curie temperature (Tc) remains constant. However, recent work has demonstrated that Tc of many natural titanomagnetites varies strongly as a function of thermal history, independent of chemical alteration. This is inferred to arise from reordering of cations and/or vacancies in the crystal structure, and changes occur at temperatures and times relevant to standard paleomagnetic thermal treatments. Because changes take place at T < Tc, they have the potential to dramatically affect thermal remanence acquisition or demagnetization, impacting interpretation of paleomagnetic results. Here we have modeled the effects of reordering on standard thermal demagnetization and paleointensity experiments. Results suggest that Tc changes during laboratory heating make it impossible to accurately measure the unblocking temperature spectrum without modifying it. Samples with a starting Tc0 less than the closure temperature (Tclose) for the reordering process will develop a high‐temperature “tail” that did not exist prior to heating. Samples with a starting Tc0 > Tclose will have their original Tb spectrum truncated at T ≈ Tclose. Predicted behavior during Thellier‐type paleointensity experiments results in only modest deviations in NRM‐lost or pTRM*‐gained from the nonreordering case. Much larger deviations are predicted for pTRM checks. Compared to paleointensity results from titanomagnetite‐bearing pyroclastic deposits, modeled nonideal behavior occurs in the same temperature intervals, but is much more systematic. Reordering is likely one contributing factor to failure of paleointensity experiments.

New archaeomagnetic direction results from China and their constraints on palaeosecular variation of the geomagnetic field in Eastern Asia

We carried out an archaeomagnetic directional study on 38 oriented samples (bricks and baked clays) collected from four archaeological locations at three provinces in China. The ages of our samples, spanning from ∼3000 BCE to ∼1300 CE, were constrained using a combination of archaeological context, radiocarbon dating and stratigraphic information. Rock magnetic results demonstrate that the main magnetic minerals of the studied samples are magnetite and/or hematite in single domain and superparamagnetic states. A total of 20 new reliable archaeodirectional data from 12 independent sites are obtained after thermal demagnetization experiments. These are the first set of archaeodirectional data in China produced since the 1990s. The published data are largely from the past 2 kyr and data from older time periods are rare. Our new data, especially those from period older than 3 ka, fill many gaps of the presently published dataset and will provide strong constraints on palaeosecular variation of the geomagnetic field in Eastern Asia and on the improvement of global models. Quite a few inflection points in the direction of the geomagnetic field are recorded in Eastern Asia over the past 10 kyr and some of them synchronize with the maximums or minimums of the palaeointensity. The palaeosecular variation rates are very low (based on present data distribution) before 2000 BCE and then start to increase and fluctuate afterward, which is generally consistent with the pattern of palaeointensity variations in this area.

Hot clasts and cold blasts: thermal heterogeneity in boiling-over pyroclastic density currents

Abstract Partial thermal remanent magnetization data from clasts in pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits provide information on the emplacement temperatures of both lithic and juvenile magmatic clasts contained in the deposits. We collected palaeomagnetic data from clasts in PDC deposits emplaced during historical eruptions of two volcanoes in Ecuador, the 2006 eruption at Tungurahua and the 1877 eruption at Cotopaxi. These eruptions were characterized by emplacement of PDCs mainly related to boiling-over activity. The deposits of these eruptions are similar and are characterized by cauliflower-textured juvenile scoria clasts up to 1 m in diameter and a diverse assemblage of lithic clasts surrounded by an unwelded ashy matrix. On the basis of progressive thermal demagnetization experiments, we infer that emplacement temperatures for most of the lithic clasts in PDC deposits are below 90 °C. In contrast, palaeomagnetic data from juvenile clasts from the same deposits provide emplacement temperatures higher than 540 °C. These data indicate the PDC were thermally heterogeneous over short length scales (decimetres) also after deposition. We hypothesize that PDCs emplaced by the boiling-over mechanism cool quickly owing to atmosphere entrainment, causing the juvenile clasts to form a rind that retains heat and that also prevents lithic clasts from appreciable heating. Several deposits on Cotopaxi, despite being morphologically similar to the PDC deposits, contain both cold lithic and juvenile clasts, which we interpret to be lahar deposits formed by PDCs travelling across glacial ice and snow. Rare deposits containing both hot lithic and hot juvenile clasts are classified as well-mixed, hot PDCs, and were erupted during a more energetic phase at Tungurahua.

The Matuyama–Brunhes polarity reversal in four Chinese loess records: high-fidelity recording of geomagnetic field behavior or a less than reliable chronostratigraphic marker?

The paleomagnetic recording fidelity of Chinese loess has been a matter of long-term dispute. To help shed light on the acquisition/retention mechanisms of natural remanent magnetization in loess, we report on high-sampling-resolution paleomagnetic constraints on the position of the Matuyama–Brunhes Boundary (MBB) in four typical loess sections in different marginal areas of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), each of which has experienced different East Asian winter/summer monsoon strengths and pedogenic intensities. Detailed thermal demagnetization experiments for 1850 specimens reveal that none of the high-accumulation-rate loess with the weakest pedogenesis at Caotan (western CLP), the massive Pedogenesis loess characterized by extensive development of thick calcareous nodule layers at Jixian (SE CLP), and the moderately pedogenized loess at Fanshan (NE CLP) have preserved high-fidelity geomagnetic records across the MBBs. Jiuzhoutai (western CLP), one of the thickest loess profiles in the world, contains the thickest, and hitherto the most complex MBB that is too extensive to be regarded as rapid fluctuations of geomagnetic field during the M/B reversal. At Jixian, a predominance of pedogenesis-induced chemical remanent magnetization overprinting has heavily obscured the original remanence. The significant downward displacement of the MBB at Fanshan and even its total absence at Caotan, together with extensive remagnetization of the coarse-grained ‘upper sandy loess layer’ (L9) in both sections, further suggest that the processes of remanence acquisition/retention of Chinese loess in the marginal areas of the CLP are rather complicated. Thus, interpretations of the fine structure of geomagnetic transitional field behavior and ‘excursions’, especially in the Matuyama Chron, should be regarded with caution.

New archaeomagnetic data recovered from the study of Roman and Visigothic remains from central Spain (3rd-7th centuries)

SUMMARY New archaeomagnetic results from four heated/combustion structures recovered from two archaeological sites in central Spain are reported. They have been dated by archaeological evidence and in two cases by radiocarbon dating. Rock magnetic experiments indicate low coercivity magnetic phases, such as magnetite and thermally stable maghaemite, as the main carriers of the remanent magnetization. Haematite has been observed in poorly heated baked clays. Archaeomagnetic directions have been obtained from either alternating field or thermal demagnetization experiments performed on 57 specimens coming from 46 independently oriented samples. The four well-defined archaeomagnetic directions obtained are in good agreement with previous archaeomagnetic data and with recent regional and global field models. They define the beginning of easterly declination drift that was initiated around 350–400 AD and culminated around 800–850 AD, and delineate the maximum in inclination that took place around 600–650 AD. In addition, classical Thellier–Thellier experiments including thermal remanent magnetization anisotropy and cooling rate corrections were conducted on 23 specimens. Only 13 specimens, corresponding to well-defined single component behaviour, gave reliable results. New mean archaeointensities have been obtained for two of the four studied structures (VBK1, 64.2 ± 5.0 μT and VBT1, 62.4 ± 2.6 μT). The new data suggest that two relative intensity maxima occurred in Western Europe around 320 and 630 AD, being of lower magnitude that observed in Eastern Europe.

Philippine Sea Plate motion since the Eocene estimated from paleomagnetism of seafloor drill cores and gravity cores

Current models of Philippine Sea (PHS) Plate motion assume a general and large northward shift since the Eocene. In order to constrain better the age and amount of this northward shift, we have conducted a paleomagnetic study on drill and gravity cores, respectively, taken from the seafloor of the northern part of the PHS Plate. The core samples consist of sedimentary rocks or semi-consolidated sediments, and their ages, as estimated from microfossils and strontium isotope ratios, range from the Eocene to late Miocene. The results of stepwise alternating-field and thermal demagnetization experiments revealed that 19 sections at 17 sites out of 58 sections at the 29 sites examined yielded mean paleomagnetic directions with a 95% confidence limit (α95)of <25°, and 14 sections at 13 sites have α95 < 15°. An estimation of the amount of the northward shift at each site was obtained from the difference between the paleolatitude and the present latitude. This estimation revealed that the northern part of the PHS Plate was located near the equator at 50 Ma and that the majority of the northward shift took place between about 50 and 25 Ma. Very little northward movement occurred after 15 Ma. Based on our data, together with the available paleomagnetic information suggesting clockwise rotation of about 90° since the Eocene and the requirements from geometry with the surrounding plates, we present a model in which the PHS Plate rotated 90° clockwise between 50 and 15 Ma on the Euler pole near 23°N, 162°E, although it is impossible to specifically determine the Euler pole position.

Magnetic polarity stratigraphy of the Neogene foreland basin deposits of Nepal

ABSTRACTThe early Miocene Dumri Formation and middle Miocene–Pliocene Siwalik Group were deposited in the Himalayan foreland basin in response to uplift and erosion in the Himalayan fold‐thrust belt. We report magnetostratigraphic data from four sections of these rocks in Nepal. Three of these sections are in the Siwalik Group in the hanging wall of the Main Frontal thrust, and one section is from the Dumri Formation in the hanging wall of the Main Boundary thrust (MBT). Thermal demagnetization experiments demonstrate that laminated siltstones yield palaeomagnetic data useful for tectonic and magnetostratigraphic studies whereas other lithofacies yield data of questionable reliability. Magnetostratigraphic data have been acquired from 297 sites within a 4200‐m‐thick section of Siwalik deposits at Surai Khola. The observed sequence of polarity zones correlates with the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) from chron C5Ar.1n to chron C2r.2n, spanning the time frame ca. 12.5–2.0 Ma. At Muksar Khola (eastern Nepal), 111 palaeomagnetic sites from a 2600‐m‐thick section of the Siwalik Group define a polarity zonation that correlates with the GPTS from chron C4Ar.2n to chron C2Br.1r, indicating an age range of ca. 10.0–3.5 Ma. At Tinau Khola, 121 sites from a 1824‐m‐thick section of the Siwalik Group are correlated to chrons C5An.1n through C4r.1n, equivalent to the time span ca. 11.8–8.1 Ma. At Swat Khola, 68 sites within a 1200‐m‐thick section of lower Miocene Dumri Formation are correlated with chrons C6n through C5Bn.2n, covering the time span ca. 19.9–15.1 Ma. Together with previous results from Khutia Khola and Bakiya Khola, these data provide the first magnetostratigraphic correlation along nearly the entire NW–SE length of Nepal. The correlation demonstrates that major lithostratigraphic boundaries in the Siwalik Group are highly diachronous, with roughly 2 Myr of variability. In turn, this suggests that the major sedimentological changes commonly inferred to reflect strengthening of the Asian monsoon are not isochronous. Sediment accumulation curves exhibit a 30–50% increase in accumulation rate in four of the five sections of the Siwalik Group, but the timing of this increase ranges systematically from ∼11.1 Ma in western Nepal to ∼5.3 Ma in eastern Nepal. If this increase in sediment accumulation rate is interpreted as a result of more rapid subsidence owing to thrust loading in the Himalaya, then the diachroneity of this increase suggests lateral propagation of a major thrust system, perhaps the MBT, at a rate of ca. 103 mm year−1 across the length of Nepal.

Paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic measurements were performed on the GS-SB-1 core of 350.2 m long drilled at Shobu Town, Saitama Prefecture, central Kanto Plain, Japan. 493 and 16 samples were taken from the core for progressive alternating field and thermal demagnetization experiments. Approximately 95 % of the samples have a stable remanent magnetization component.The core between 0 and 266.755 m in depth yielded a normal polarity, while between 276.9 and 350.2 m in depth was a reversed polarity. The reversal between 266.755 and 350.2 m in depth corresponds to the Matuyama-Brunhes polarity transition.

New Middle Cambrian and Middle Ordovician palaeomagnetic data from Siberia: Llandelian magnetostratigraphy and relative rotation between the Aldan and Anabar–Angara blocks

Whether Siberia was a coherent tectonic unit throughout the Phanerozoic or whether significant rotations occurred in early Palaeozoic times between the Anabar–Angara and Aldan blocks is still a matter of debate. Addressing this problem a detailed palaeomagnetic study of sections of mid Cambrian and Llandeillian age has been carried out along the river Lena, river Maya, river Kulumbe, and river Stolbovaya, with a total of 403 collected hand-samples. A section of Llandeilian age was also investigated on the Russian Platform, near St. Petersburg. The studied rocks are carbonates or fine grained terrigenous sediments of reddish and greyish colors. Stepwise thermal demagnetization experiments reveal a rather simple directional behavior. In most samples, after removal of a secondary magnetizations at low to intermediate temperatures, a high temperature component is isolated, which is carried by magnetite and/or hematite. Positive reversal tests and fold tests clearly demonstrate the primary character of the latter component. While only reversed polarity directions are obtained in the lower two thirds of the Llandeilo, six magnetozones of normal polarity are found in the Upper Llandeilo, which mark the end of the Moyero reverse superchron. Together with previously published paleomagnetic data our new results show rather systematic difference in declinations of ~ 20° between the Aldan and Anabar–Angara blocks. This argues in favor of a relative rotation between these two blocks, with an Euler pole of rotation located at latitude ~ 62°N and Longitude ~ 117°. Our interpretation is further supported by existing results from deep sounding seismic experiments, yielding a very similar pole of rotation.
