In this paper, I discuss the relationship between structure and agency in institutional translation. My case is a Swedish retranslation of the biblical texts commenced in 1972. Against the background of the directives issued to the translators, and through a case study of how three Old Testament texts were translated by the team, I argue that the team members bypassed certain aspects of the directives. This, however, was not primarily because they exercised their individual agency, but because they collectively related their work to the abstract institution of biblical studies, which can be conceived of as a belief system which structured the interpretation and translation of the biblical texts. The case is hereby discussed to critically assess the relationship between agency and structure, and to suggest a non-binary way of understanding the relationship between the two.

The propagation paths of the Catholic doctrine of the Trinity in the Ming and Qing dynasties

According to historical analysis and textual interpretation, the propagation of the Catholic doctrine of the Trinity in the Ming and Qing dynasties was closely related to Matteo Ricci. When entering China, Ricci put forward the ‘Theory of Buddhist-Daoist Plagiarism’, asserting that Buddhism and Taoism had plagiarised the Catholic doctrine on the triune God. As for Confucianism, he pointed out that the ancient Confucian classics did not contain the doctrine of the Trinity, which he attributed to various facters, leading to what may be termed the ‘Confucian Absence Theory’. Matteo Ricci’s interpretations and propositions regarding the Chinese Trinity paved the way for the ‘Yi-Fo School’, the ‘Bu-Ru School’ and the Figurism, which emerged during the dissemination of the Trinity in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The ‘Yi-Fo School’ advocated replacing the Buddhist Trinity with the Catholic Trinity to complement the perceived absence in Confucianism, thus forming the ‘Bu-Ru School’. In contrast, Figurism advocated for use of Chinese characters and texts as clues to uncover the missing Trinity in Confucian classics. Regarding Matteo Ricci’s viewpoints and the above three paths, Buddhism of that era believed that Catholicism had plagiarised the Buddhist doctrine of the Trinity, and modern Chinese scholars also argued that the views of the Figurism were overly far-fetched. These paths placed the Trinitarian doctrines of Catholicism, Buddhism and Daoism in a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural comparative framework, underscoring the methodological significance of exchanges and mutual learning among civilisations.Contribution: This article examines the nexus between Matteo Ricci and the propagation of the Catholic doctrine of the Trinity in the Ming and Qing dynasties. It also investigates the evolution of three distinct pathway for this doctrinal propagation and assesses the Chinese Populace’s reactions, as well as the interplay of their discourses.

Machine learning for predictive AAC: Improving speech and gesture-based communication systems

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems play a crucial role in supporting individuals with severe communication disabilities by providing accessible means of expression and engagement. However, many conventional AAC devices rely on manual input or basic predictive functions, which can limit communication efficiency and responsiveness. The application of machine learning (ML) to AAC offers new opportunities to enhance these systems, enabling them to provide faster, more accurate, and contextually relevant communication assistance. Advances in ML, particularly in predictive text, speech recognition, and gesture interpretation, allow AAC systems to adapt more intuitively to user needs, predicting intent based on usage patterns and multimodal data, such as voice and gestures. Current research highlights the potential of ML to address key gaps in AAC technology by creating more responsive, personalized systems that align with individual user behaviours. This study proposes a novel ML framework designed to integrate these capabilities, promising improvements in communication speed, user autonomy, and accuracy. By addressing the challenges and limitations of traditional AAC devices, this research aims to advance accessible communication solutions that empower users and improve quality of life.

«Theory of everything»: types of information and the theory of interpretation in «Philosophy of chance» by Stanisław Lem

The article is focused on the S. Lem’s perspective of the literary work as a product of the reader’s apprehension of the text in the culture discourse. The aim of the research is to describe the Lem’s view on the structure of the text; Lem’s encounter as a writer, a reader, and a philosopher is used to state the conditions and characteristics of the text interpretation. By the means of multiple introspection the author of “Philosophy of chance” devotes his research to the explanation of his model of the literary work as a product of the social-cultural existence. Moreover, the author’s aim is to state the characteristics of the text creation and interpretation. Therefore, the research shows a new, “cybernetic” approach to the text interpretation based on the comparison between the text structural characteristics and the rules of the mathematical theory of probability and the theory of information. The futurological view lies in the hypothesis about the text as a “self-learning program” (also known as a neuronet) which can transform due to the developing conditions of the interpretation process. As a matter of fact, S. Lem highlights two types of information: selective and structural. Both types might be identified in the text, but that depends on the reader, his encounter and expertise.

Transcending failure: A study on the “failed domestication” of online news for young visually impaired people in China

Drawing on the triple articulation framework, this study explores the “failed domestication” of online news consumption among young visually impaired people (YVIP), focusing on technological objects, symbolic environments, and individual texts. The findings suggest that “failed domestication” is not merely a consequence of limitations in technical design or social contexts but rather the result of “negotiation” between individuals and media. YVIP develop unique media usage strategies by simplifying operational procedures, foregoing updates, filtering out news irrelevant to their daily lives, and personalizing their interpretation of texts. In contrast to the notion of “failure” rooted in ableism, these behaviors reflect a deep understanding by the visually impaired of their capabilities and specific needs, constituting a form of “alternative success.” The use of digital media by people with disabilities is a process of autonomous choice rather than the “enforcing normalcy.” Therefore, this study advocates for creating a more flexible and human-centric media ecosystem that enables people with disabilities to choose appropriate media usage patterns based on their individual needs and preferences, thus promoting genuine digital inclusivity.

Reflexivity is a key feature of the development of all disciplines. Following the phonetic revolution, Maya epigraphy reached the point of incorporating this component. In this paper, we present the application of reflexivity through the interpretation of a difficult text, Piedras Negras Throne 1. We do this in addition to our philological approach. Starting from the grammatical elements, this approach then reveals not only the possible drivers of a series of historical events, but also the beliefs around the sacred bundle that were essential to the reign of the king in the Classic Period.

The Rhetoric of Islamist Radical Organizations as a Method of Manipulating the Consciousness of Believers in the Late 20th – Early 21st Centuries

The article examines the influence of specific radical movements of Islam on their adherents through the linguistic attitudes. In the introduction, the author examines the general global reasons due to which a person in modern society is especially susceptible to various types of involvement in destructive cults. The main part of the article is devoted to the consideration of practical examples of verbal manipulations used by the Islamists. The paper also mentions extremist and terrorist organizations whose activities are prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation and discusses their distorted interpretations of classical theological texts. By analyzing specialized literature in Russian and Arabic, as well as empirically, the research reveals the ways to influence the personality of a believer through the language. The author of the publication personally held many meetings in pre-trial detention centers with those under investigation and accused on extremist and terrorist charges and collected a large amount of empirical material. A conclusion is drawn about the main linguistic manipulations of Islamist organizations.

Influence of Translation Techniques on the Accuracy of Interpretation of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

This study analyzes the influence of translation techniques on the accuracy of the interpretation of Louisa May Alcott's novel "Little Women". The three translation techniques analyzed are literal translation, idiomatic translation, and dynamic equivalence. This study uses a qualitative method with a content analysis approach from the novel “Little Women”. This method was chosen to explore in depth how translation techniques affect the accuracy of interpretation in the translated novel. These findings emphasize the importance of choosing the right translation technique to maintain the integrity of literary interpretation. This study also highlights the importance of considering cultural and social contexts in the process of translating literary texts. It was found that a deep understanding of the author's original culture is essential to produce an accurate and meaningful translation. In addition, this study recommends that translators have strong linguistic and literary skills to be able to transfer the nuances and meanings contained in the original text into their translations. The findings of this study can be a valuable guide for translators and researchers in understanding the complexity of translation techniques and their impact on the interpretation of literary texts.

The Teacher as Listener: A Theory of Pedagogical Listening in the Literature Classroom

ABSTRACT Getting students talking about a work of literature — sharing and interrogating their own and each other’s textual interpretations and responses — is vital for the teaching and learning of literature. If a classroom community of readers is constituted by such talking, then responsive teaching involves a lot of listening. What, precisely, might be the role(s) of the teacher as listener? Beginning with three classroom vignettes, and then drawing from psychoanalytic theory, pragmatist aesthetics, and philosophy of dialogue, this article theorises a distinctly pedagogical listening. One role of the teacher as a listener in the literature classroom can be interpreting and intervening in ‘textual problems’ that typically arise in moments of confusion or surprise — students’ and/or their teacher’s — throughout interpretive discussion. Such pedagogical listening can instantiate, among other qualities discussed in this article, a double consciousness or divided attention. This article concludes by suggesting specific classroom practices and conditions for pedagogical listening.

This text aims to address the topic of the Systematic Literature Review (RSL), and its application to the teaching and learning of mathematics in the initial grades of elementary school. The aim is to establish a line of guidance that makes it possible to particularize and direct the child’s knowledge, in such a way that facilitates their learning, highlighting research on themes that deal with the interpretation of texts, both in reading and writing statements and mathematical problems, within the native language.

Purchasing Power as a Major Determinant of Food Security in Rural and Semi-Urban Areas: A South African Household Experience

This study examined the complex role religion plays in both promoting and ending sexual and gender-based violence against women in the Tamale Metropolis of Ghana. While major religious traditions emphasize equality and non-violence, certain interpretations of religious texts and cultural traditions have enabled patriarchal norms that subjugate women. Qualitative data from interviews with 18 respondents across Christian, Muslim, and traditional African religious communities revealed ongoing oppressive practices like forced marriage and early marriage of young girls, divorce, physical abuse such as wife battering, sexual abuse, and victim-blaming. However, religious institutions are increasingly initiating efforts to combat this violence through advocacy, education, counselling services, and partnerships with civil society groups. While these initiatives exist, significant challenges remain in transforming deeply entrenched sociocultural norms that enable violence against women. These initiatives demonstrate how religious institutions can leverage their moral authority to transform sociocultural norms enabling violence against women. The study highlights the need for sustained engagement with religious communities, reinterpretation of doctrine promoting gender equality, and collaborative efforts across sectors to eliminate this pervasive human rights issue. Harnessing the influential role of religion through a progressive, rights-based approach is crucial for addressing sexual and gender-based violence in the Tamale Metropolis and similar contexts. Comparative Accuracy of ChatGPT 4.0 and Google Gemini in Answering Pediatric Radiology Text-Based Questions.

This study evaluates the accuracy of two AI language models, ChatGPT 4.0 and Google Gemini (as of August 2024), in answering a set of 79 text-based pediatric radiology questions from "Pediatric Imaging: A Core Review."Accurate interpretation of text and images is critical in radiology, making AI tools valuable in medical education. The study involved 79 questions selected from a pediatric radiology question set, focusing solely on text-based questions. ChatGPT 4.0 and Google Gemini answered these questions, and their responses were evaluated using a binary scoring system. Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests and relative risk (RR) calculations, were performed to compare the overall and subsection accuracy of the models. ChatGPT 4.0 demonstrated superior accuracy, correctly answering 83.5% (66/79) of the questions, compared to Google Gemini's 68.4% (54/79), with a statistically significant difference (p=0.0255, RR=1.221). No statistically significant differences were found between the models within individual subsections, with p-values ranging from 0.136 to 1. ChatGPT 4.0 outperformed Google Gemini in overall accuracy for text-based pediatric radiology questions, highlighting its potential utility in medical education. However, the lack of significant differences within subsections and the exclusion of image-based questions underscore the need for further research with larger sample sizes and multimodal inputs to fully assess AI models' capabilities in radiology.

Network technologies as a tool for self-presentation of small religious groups (the case of Buddhism new for Russia)

This article analyses the results of a long-term study of the strategies of the Russian-speaking Buddhist community in relation to the Internet and new media. The authors present the results of a study of two cases of Buddhist digital innovators - communities of the Russian-speaking branch of the International Dzogchen Community and Russian Theravada. The authors chose these two cases for analysis, since they are representative for the sociological consideration of the multidimensional connections between online and offline communications of Russian digital Buddhism. The subject of the study seems to be especially relevant, since in modern sociology more and more attention is paid to the study of the influence of media technologies, the Internet and social media on religious traditions, practices and forms of social organisation of religion. The reason for this is the deepening process of mediatisation of modern societies. It has brought with it fundamental transformations of various spheres of social activity. Religions are involved in the process of mediatisation, that poses a number of serious questions that require new answers unknown to their traditions. Thus, the digitalisation of sacred texts brings with it the devaluation of the tradition of canonical knowledge and interpretation of sacred texts. In this complex context of reformatting social reality, Russian traditional religions are developing their own reflections and responses to the risks of mediatisation. On the Russian-language Internet, Orthodoxy, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism are represented by a rich variety of websites of the corresponding religious communities and centres of various trends, podcasts, channels, publics, groups and blogs on social networks. And, as the results of sociological research demonstrate, the discussion of the correlation of the value-normative coordinates of everyday life with religious-doctrinal regulation serves as the semantic core of trans-local religious communications mediated by media. New digital media challenge religious traditional values, since they provide space and ways of forming new religious authorities, new ways of influencing a certain religious group. The study was conducted using a methodology developed by the authors, combining methods of mathematical modelling and qualitative sociology. The authors conclude that, paradoxically, non-traditional Buddhist organisations in Russia have adopted an innovative strategy and have proven to be very creative in attracting new media and promoting their own presentations in the public space. And the directions of Buddhism that have been institutionalised in the past 30 years, on the contrary, are conservative.

The paper analyses a group of New Kingdom hieratic ink-written labels added to the Middle Kingdom relief figures of offering bearers in the North Chapel of the pyramid precinct of King Senwosret III of the 12th Dynasty at Dahshur. It applies a close observation of the spatial properties of the secondary epigraphy combined with contexts of the Egyptian written culture. To a large extent, it is a beginning, rather than a fixed and detailed outline, of a more differentiated, location-specific interpretation of secondary texts and figures added to the decoration of various parts of the royal pyramid complexes. The interpretation of this specific scene suggests that the visitors articulated their status alongside a personal involvement with this prestigious site by labelling the offering bearers in order to achieve a purposeful revivification, and an arrogation, of the offering scene performance. Epistemology of Interpretation of Women's Leadership Verses in the Qur'an ( Comparative Study of Tafsir Al-Ibriz and Tafsir Al-Mishbah )

The epistemology of interpretation critically analyzes the foundation of the theory of knowledge in interpretation. This study examines the sources, methods, and validity of interpretation, focusing on two mufassirs: Bisri Mustofa in Tafsir Al-Ibriz and Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Mishbah. The research method employed is library research, with the interpretation of women's leadership verses as the object, using a descriptive-analytical approach. The author analyzes these verses and epistemological theories as analytical tools. The results reveal the epistemological structure of the two mufassirs: First, the source of interpretation: Bisri Mustofa relies on intellect (ra'yu), while Quraish Shihab uses Qur'anic texts, hadith, opinions of scholars and scientists, reason (ra'yu), and historical data. Second, the methodology of interpretation: both mufassirs use the tahlili (analysis) method; however, Bisri Mustofa adopts a textual approach, whereas Quraish Shihab adopts a more contextual approach. Third, the validity of interpretation: in terms of coherence, both interpretations maintain consistency; in terms of correspondence, Bisri Mustofa's interpretation lacks relevance to the contemporary reality, while Quraish Shihab's interpretation is more aligned with societal realities. Pragmatically, Bisri Mustofa's textual interpretation contributes inadequately to societal issues, whereas Quraish Shihab's contextual approach provides more significant contributions in addressing societal problems.

The purpose of this thesis is to show that Paul Ricoeur’s theory can be interpreted as an educational theory as it is regarding its explanation about text hermeneutics. Text is one of the most important concepts in hermeneutics, but the issues concerning it are not confined to a specific academic field; rather, they are related to the very act of understanding the world. Ultimately, explaining how we understand texts is equivalent to explaining human experience of the world itself. Ricoeur began addressing the problem of text from the issue of discourse, where meaning in language begins, and he considered the distance that arises between language and meaning here to be the starting point of hermeneutics. Texts are the medium where this issue is most vividly expressed. By understanding texts through the path of semantic autonomy they open up, humans acquire an understanding of the world, which in turn broadens the horizon of self comprehension. Ricoeur shows us the educational significance of hermeneutics by explaining the meaning of text interpretation through this depth semantic approach.

[Objective] The purpose of this study is to hermeneutically compare the rebirth centered on the frame stories of three editions of the early prose Upanishads. In a macroscopic sense, it aims to academically establish the concept and characteristics of the theory of rebirth in the early Upanishads, which is evaluated as a preliminary stage of the theory of reincarnation that functions as a complex of rebirth-karman-liberation in Indian religion. [Contents] This study proceeds with the Sanskrit texts interpretation of representative rebirth phrases in the early prose Upanishads and their multi-faceted analysis. In detail, it deals with the aspects of Devayana and Pitryana described in the text, and the issue of karman of good and evil deeds, and analyzes the concept and system of rebirth by comparing and examining the similarities and differences of the three editions. [Conclusions] The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the process of rebirth revealed in the early prose Upanishads reveals its essence through the finitude of human beings and the convention of time that attempts to transcend them. Second, while BĀU and ChU compromised the formal expressions and modes with the vedic tradition, KauṣU began to use the rhetorical language of knowledge and karman as the theme of Upaniṣad. Third, the early prose Upanishads contain hints at the fundamental modes of karman and liberation, but these are evaluated as preliminary stages of the formalized theory of reincarnation.

Personalized medicine tailors treatments and dosages based on a patient's unique characteristics, particularly its genetic profile. Over the decades, stratified research and clinical trials have uncovered crucial drug-related information-such as dosage, effectiveness, and side effects-affecting specific individuals with particular genetic backgrounds. This genetic-specific knowledge, characterized by complex multirelationships and conditions, cannot be adequately represented or stored in conventional knowledge systems. To address these challenges, we developed CPMKG, a condition-based platform that enables comprehensive knowledge representation. Through information extraction and meticulous curation, we compiled 307 614 knowledge entries, encompassing thousands of drugs, diseases, phenotypes (complications/side effects), genes, and genomic variations across four key categories: drug side effects, drug sensitivity, drug mechanisms, and drug indications. CPMKG facilitates drug-centric exploration and enables condition-based multiknowledge inference, accelerating knowledge discovery through three pivotal applications. To enhance user experience, we seamlessly integrated a sophisticated large language model that provides textual interpretations for each subgraph, bridging the gap between structured graphs and language expressions. With its comprehensive knowledge graph and user-centric applications, CPMKG serves as a valuable resource for clinical research, offering drug information tailored to personalized genetic profiles, syndromes, and phenotypes.
