A study on the application of diffuse axonal multi-axis general evaluation for brain injury assessment in small overlap barrier crash test

PurposeHead injury criterion (HIC) companied by a rotation-based metric was widely believed to be helpful for head injury prediction in road traffic accidents. Recently, the Euro-New Car Assessment Program utilized a newly developed metric called diffuse axonal multi-axis general evaluation (DAMAGE) to explain test device for human occupant restraint (THOR) head injury, which demonstrated excellent ability in capturing concussions and diffuse axonal injuries. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the effectiveness of using DAMAGE for Hybrid Ⅲ 50th percentile male dummy (H50th) head injury assessment. The objective of this study is to determine whether the DAMAGE could capture the risk of H50th brain injury during small overlap barrier tests. MethodsTo achieve this objective, a total of 24 vehicle crash loading curves were collected as input data for the multi-body simulation. Two commercially available mathematical dynamic models, namely H50th and THOR, were utilized to investigate the differences in head injury response. Subsequently, a decision method known as simple additive weighting was employed to establish a comprehensive brain injury metric by incorporating the weighted HIC and either DAMAGE or brain injury criterion. Furthermore, 35 sets of vehicle crash test data were used to analyze these brain injury metrics. ResultsThe rotational displacement of the THOR head is significantly greater than that of the H50th head. The maximum linear and rotational head accelerations experienced by H50th and THOR models were 544.6 ± 341.7 m/s2, 2468.2 ± 1309.4 rad/s2 and 715.2 ± 332.8 m/s2, 3778.7 ± 1660.6 rad/s2, respectively. Under the same loading condition during small overlap barrier (SOB) tests, THOR exhibits a higher risk of head injury compared to the H50th model. It was observed that the overall head injury response during the small overlap left test condition is greater than that during the small overlap right test. Additionally, an equation was formulated to establish the necessary relationship between THOR DAMAGE and H50th DAMAGE values. ConclusionIf H50th rather than THOR is employed as an evaluation tool in SOB crash tests, newly designed vehicles are more likely to achieve superior performance scores. According to the current injury curve for DAMAGE and brain injury criterion, it is highly recommended that HIC along with DAMAGE was prioritized for brain injury assessment in SOB tests.

Investigation on vehicle occupant dummy applicability for under-foot impact loading conditions

PurposeUnder-foot impact loadings can cause serious lower limb injuries in many activities, such as automobile collisions and underbody explosions to military vehicles. The present study aims to compare the biomechanical responses of the mainstream vehicle occupant dummies with the human body lower limb model and analyze their robustness and applicability for assessing lower limb injury risk in under-foot impact loading environments. MethodsThe Hybrid III model, the test device for human occupant restraint (THOR) model, and a hybrid human body model with the human active lower limb model were adopted for under-foot impact analysis regarding different impact velocities and initial lower limb postures. ResultsThe results show that the 2 dummy models have larger peak tibial axial force and higher sensitivity to the impact velocities and initial postures than the human lower limb model. In particular, the Hybrid III dummy model presented extremely larger peak tibial axial forces than the human lower limb model. In the case of minimal difference in tibial axial force, Hybrid III's tibial axial force (7.5 kN) is still 312.5% that of human active lower limb's (2.4 kN). Even with closer peak tibial axial force values, the biomechanical response curve shapes of the THOR model show significant differences from the human lower limb model. ConclusionBased on the present results, the Hybrid III dummy cannot be used to evaluate the lower limb injury risk in under-foot loading environments. In contrast, potential improvement in ankle biofidelity and related soft tissues of the THOR dummy can be implemented in the future for better applicability.

Biofidelity Assessment of the WIAMan Thorax by a Comparative Study With Hybrid III, THOR, and PMHS in Frontal Sled Testing.

The Warrior Injury Assessment Manikin (WIAMan) anthropomorphic test device (ATD) has been originally developed to predict and prevent injuries for occupants in military vehicles, in an underbody blast environment. However, its crash performance and biofidelity of the thoracic region have not been explored. The aim of this study was to determine and evaluate the WIAMan thoracic responses in a typical frontal sled test. The 40 kph frontal sled tests were conducted to quantify the WIAMan thoracic kinematics, chest deflection, and belt loads. Comparative biofidelities of the WIAMan thorax and other surrogates, including postmortem human surrogates (PMHSs), Hybrid III, and test device for human occupant restraint (THOR) ATDs, were assessed under comparable testing conditions. The similarities and differences between WIAMan and the other surrogates were compared and analyzed, including the motion of bilateral shoulders and T1, time histories of chest deflections, and belt loads. The CORrelation and Analysis (CORA) ratings were used to evaluate the correlations of thoracic responses between the ATDs and PMHS. Compared to the PMHS and THOR, the WIAMan experienced a similar level of left shoulder forward excursions. Larger chest deflection was exhibited in WIAMan throughout the whole duration of belt compression. Differences were found in belt loads between subject types. Overall, WIAMan had slightly lower CORA scores but showed comparable overall performance. The overall thoracic responses of WIAMan under the frontal sled test were more compliant than HIII, but still reasonable compared with PMHS and THOR. Comprehensive systematic studies on comparative biofidelity of WIAMan and other surrogates under different impact conditions are expected in future research.

A current assessment of the THOR 50M in rear impacts

Objective This study presents a comparison of the Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) 50M and Hybrid III (HIII) 50M anthropomorphic test device (ATD) geometries and rear impact head and neck biofidelity to each other and to postmortem human surrogate (PMHS) data to evaluate the usefulness of the THOR in rear impact testing. Methods Both ATDs were scanned in a seated position on a rigid bench seat. A series of rear impact sled tests with the rigid bench seat with no head restraint support were conducted with a HIII-50M at 16 and 24 kph. Tests at each speed were performed twice with the THOR-50M to allow an assessment of the repeatability of the THOR-50M. A comparison of the test results from THOR-50M testing were made to the results of a previous study that included PMHS. Rear impact sled tests with both ATDs in a modern seat were then conducted at 40 kph. Results The THOR-50M head was 48.4 mm rearward and 60.1 mm higher than the HIII-50M head when seated in the rigid bench seat. In the repeated rigid bench testing at 16 and 24 kph, the THOR-50M head longitudinal and vertical accelerations, upper neck moment, and overall kinematics showed good test-to-test repeatability. In the rigid bench tests, the THOR-50M neck experienced flexion prior to extension in the 16 kph tests, where the neck of the HIII only experienced extension. At 24 kph both ATDs only experienced extension. The THOR-50M head displaced more rearward at both test velocities. The rigid bench tests show that the THOR-50M neck allows for more extension motion or articulation than the HIII-50M neck. The rigid bench test also shows that the head longitudinal and vertical accelerations, angular head kinematics, and upper neck moments were reasonably comparable between the ATDs. The THOR-50M results were closer to the average of the PMHS results than the HIII-50-M results, with the exception of the upper neck. In the 40 kph tests, with a modern seat design, the THOR-50M resulted in more deformation of the seatback with greater head restraint loading than the HIII-50M. The THOR-50M head backset distance was less. Conclusion This study provides insight into the differences and similarities between the THOR and the HIII-50M ATD geometries, instrumentation responses, and kinematics, as well as the repeatability of the THOR-50M in rear impacts testing. The overall geometries of the THOR-50M and the HIII-50M are similar. The seated head position of the THOR-50M is slightly further rearward and higher than the HIII-50M. The results indicate that the THOR-50M matches the PMHS results more closely than the HIII-50M and may have improved neck biofidelity in rear impact testing. The results indicate that the studied THOR-50M responses are repeatable within expected test-to-test variations in rear impacts. Early data suggest that the THOR-50M can be used in rear impact testing, though a more complete understanding of the THOR-50M differences to the HIII ATDs will allow for better correlation to the existing body of HIII rear impact testing.

THOR-05F Response in Sled Tests Inducing Submarining and Comparison with PMHS Response Corridors.

The Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) is an advanced crash test dummy designed for frontal impact. Originally released in a 50th percentile male version (THOR-50M), a female 5th version (THOR-05F) was prototyped in 2017 (Wang et al., 2017) and compared with biofidelity sub-system tests (Wang et al., 2018). The same year, Trosseille et al. (2018) published response corridors using nine 5th percentile female Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) tested in three sled configurations, including both submarining and non-submarining cases. The goal of this paper is to provide an initial evaluation of the THOR-05F biofidelity in a full-scale sled test, by comparing its response with the PMHS corridors published by Trosseille et al. (2018). Significant similarities between PMHS and THOR-05F were observed: as in Trosseille et al. (2018), the THOR-05F did not submarine in configuration 1, and submarined in configurations 2 and 3. The lap belt tension and seat forces were similar in magnitude. For configurations 2 and 3, the pelvis excursions were of the same order of magnitude between both human surrogates. However, significant differences were also observed: compared to the PMHS, the THOR-05F showed shoulder belt forces that were 1.6 to 2.1 times higher in magnitude, and lap belt force time histories that were delayed by 10 to 20 ms. In configuration 1, the chest and pelvis resultant accelerations of the dummy were delayed as well, and the pelvis excursion and rotation more than doubled that of the PMHS.

Sagittal plane moment responses of the THOR-05F anthropomorphic test device

Objective Anthropomorphic test devices (ATD) are used in crashworthiness studies to advance safety in automotive, military, aviation, and other environments. The Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) is an advancement over the widely used Hybrid III ATD. The female version THOR-05F is different from the male as it is not a scaled-down version of the male, and it is based on the recognition that the cervical spines (necks) of females have a different response than males. The objective of this study is to evaluate its response at dynamic rates of loading and compare it with previous postmortem human surrogate (PMHS) responses under sagittal plane bending. Methods The head/neck assembly was separated from the thorax, and a lower neck plate was attached to the head/neck assembly to mount the preparation to the frame of an electro-hydraulic testing device. A custom upper neck interface plate was attached to a novel angular displacement test device that converted the linear motion of the vertical electrohydraulic piston to moment loading at the occipital condyle joint. The neck was preconditioned by applying a sinusoidal 10-degree flexion-extension cycle for 90 s and then three repeat dynamic tests at a target rate of 90 Nm/s. Flexion and extension tests were performed with and without the front and rear neck cables of the THOR-05F neck. Targets were fixed to the upper neck adapter plate, occipital condyle joint, mid-spine aluminum puck, and lower neck adapter plate. The targets’ three-dimensional positions were measured using a seven-camera optical motion capture system. Upper neck load cell and occipital condyle potentiometer data were sampled at 20 kHz, and loading rates were determined by calculating the sagittal moment slope between 15% and 85% of the signal. Results The mean occipital condyle angle versus sagittal moment response from the 12 tests (three tests each with and without cables and under flexion and extension) are given in the body of the manuscript. With and without cables, the loading rates for flexion tests were 89.3 ± 0.5 Nm/s and 86.3 ± 0.4 Nm/s, and for extension tests they were 90.8 ± 1.2 Nm/s and 88.0 ± 1.5 Nm/s. The average peak sagittal moments were 34.2 ± 0.3 Nm and 30.3 ± 0.2 Nm for flexion and 50.6 ± 0.3 Nm and 47.0 ± 0.3 Nm for extension tests. The mean peak occipital condyle angles were 23.5 ± 0.2 deg and 25.3 ± 0.1 deg for flexion and 22.7 ± 0.2 deg and 25.8 ± 0.1 deg for extension. Conclusion Using the angular motion as a basis and comparing it with the previously conducted PMHS tests, the THOR-05F neck has approximately twice the stiffness of the human under sagittal plane bending.

Lower Neck Injury Assessment Risk Curves Based on Matched-Pair Human Data for Anthropomorphic Test Devices.

Under G +x accelerative loading, the Hybrid III anthropomorphic test device (ATD) is used to advance human safety. Although injury assessment risk curves (IARCs) are available at the level of the occipital condyles (commonly termed as upper neck), they do not exist for the cervical-thoracic junction (lower neck). The objectives of this study are to develop IARCs under G +x impact accelerations for the Hybrid III ATD and test device for human occupant restraint (THOR) ATD at the cervical thoracic junction. A series of Hybrid III ATD tests were conducted using input conditions that matched previously published cadaver tests. A separate series of THOR-ATD tests were conducted using the same input conditions that matched the same previously published cadaver tests. This type of experimental design where the cadaver input condition is the same as the ATD tests are termed matched-pair tests (Cadaver-Hybrid III and Cadaver-THOR-ATD). Injury outcomes from human cadaver tests were used with loads at the cervical thoracic junction, measured in the ATD tests. Data were censored based on injury outcomes and the number of tests conducted on each specimen. Parametric survival analysis was used to derive IARCs for cervical thoracic junction force-, moment-, and interaction-based lower neck injury criterion (LNic). Injuries were scored according to the Abbreviated Injury Scale scheme. Abbreviated Injury Scale 1 or 2 was scored as injured. The 50% risk levels for the Hybrid III ATD were 315 N, 70 Nm, and 1.12 for the cervical thoracic A/P shear force-, sagittal plane extension moment-, and LNic-based injury criterion, respectively. Results for the THOR ATD were 261 N, 69 Nm, and 1.51. This is the first study to develop cervical thoracic junction IARCs for the ATDs based on force, moment, and LNic for posterior to anterior loading.

Lumbar Spine Response of Computational Finite Element Models in Multidirectional Spaceflight Landing Conditions.

The goals of this study are to compare the lumbar spine response variance between the hybrid III, test device for human occupant restraint (THOR), and global human body models consortium simplified 50th percentile (GHBMC M50-OS) finite element models and evaluate the sensitivity of lumbar spine injury metrics to multidirectional acceleration pulses for spaceflight landing conditions. The hybrid III, THOR, and GHBMC models were positioned in a baseline posture within a generic seat with side guards and a five-point restraint system. Thirteen boundary conditions, which were categorized as loading condition variables and environmental variables, were included in the parametric study using a Latin hypercube design of experiments. Each of the three models underwent 455 simulations for a total of 1365 simulations. The hybrid III and THOR models exhibited similar lumbar compression forces. The average lumbar compression force was 45% higher for hybrid III (2.2 ± 1.5 kN) and 51% higher for THOR (2.0 ± 1.6 kN) compared to GHBMC (1.3 ± 0.9 kN). Compared to hybrid III, THOR sustained an average 64% higher lumbar flexion moment and an average 436% higher lumbar extension moment. The GHBMC model sustained much lower bending moments compared to hybrid III and THOR. Regressions revealed that lumbar spine responses were more sensitive to loading condition variables than environmental variables across all models. This study quantified the intermodel lumbar spine response variations and sensitivity between hybrid III, THOR, and GHBMC. Results improve the understanding of lumbar spine response in spaceflight landings.

Compression-based injury variables from chestbands in far-side impact THOR sled tests

Objective: This study seeks to determine compression (Cmax) and compression-related injury variables (velocity and viscous injury criterion: Vmax and VCmax) from chestband data in pure lateral and oblique far-side impact sled tests.Methods: The 3-point belt–restrained mid-sized male Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) dummy was placed on a buck and subjected to side impacts with and without center-mounted airbags. The change in velocity was 8.3 m/s for all conditions. Two chestbands were routed around the outer circumference of the THOR at the levels of the third and sixth ribs. Maximum chest deflections were computed using strain gauge signals from the chestbands and their temporal contours. Three methods were used to determine deflection metrics. The first method paralleled methods used in previously published human cadaver studies; the second method used the actual anchor point location and actual alignment of the dummy’s internal sensors; and the third method used the anchor location of the internal sensor but determined the sensor’s locations on the contour confining to the aspect of the sensor. These 3 approaches are abbreviated as the SD, ID, and TD variables. The injury variables Cmax, Vmax, and VCmax were determined according to accepted procedures. Their peak magnitudes were extracted and an evaluation of their accuracy was made based on the SD method.Results: The average SD-based Cmax magnitudes for the upper and lower chest levels were 0.12 and 0.17 m/s, the Vmax magnitudes were 5.3 and 1.8 m/s, and the VCmax magnitudes were 0.24 and 0.15 m/s, respectively. Other data are given for all variables at the 2 levels of the thorax in the body of this paper. The ID-based peak variables were the lowest, and this observation was true regardless of the aspect, right or left side. In contrast, the SD method produced the greatest magnitudes of the variables. The VCmax variable had the greatest normalized difference among all 3 injury variables.Conclusions: Though the present study is limited in scope, the predetermined placement of the internal sensors in the THOR dummy underpredicted chest deflection-related injury variables, and the viscous criterion was the least reliable variable in these lateral and oblique far-side impact sled tests.

Effectiveness of center-mounted airbag in far-side impacts based on THOR sled tests

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the protection offered by a center-mounted airbag in far-side impacts using the Test device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) anthropometric test device (ATD).Methods: A rigid buck was designed based on a production vehicle. The buck consisted of a rigid seat, center console, dash, and far-side door structure. The center console and dash were covered with paper honeycomb (152 kPa), and the far-side door structure was covered with Ethafoam 220 padding material. The airbag was mounted on the seat, to the right of the occupant. The THOR-M50 ATD was positioned according to the standard seating procedure and restrained using a standard 3-point seat belt with a pretensioner and retractor. The buck was mounted on an acceleration sled in 2 orientations. Four tests at 45° (oblique) and 2 tests at 90° (lateral) orientations were conducted. Tests were performed with and without an airbag at 30 km/h delta-V and 14 g acceleration. The head accelerations, neck forces and moments, thoracic accelerations and forces, pelvis accelerations, anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) forces and moments, and belt webbing loads were obtained from sensors, and the external kinematics was obtained using an optical motion capture system and high-speed digital cameras.Results: With the center-mounted airbag, in 90° and 45° tests, reductions were observed for the following parameters: head lateral excursions by 6% and 11%, head vertical excursions by 19% and 26%, and peak head resultant accelerations by 36% and 11%. Other regional accelerations, forces, and moments were also reduced for both impact angles. A reduction in seat belt forces with the airbag was observed in 90° tests.Conclusion: The center-mounted airbag reduced the ATD excursions and accelerations in the 45° and 90° tests, thus reducing the risk of injury due to contact with the intruding structure. The results of this study may assist in designing countermeasures for vehicles in far-side impact.

THOR dummy chest deflection response in oblique and lateral far-side sled tests

Objective: The focus of this study is side impact. Though occupant injury assessment and protection in nearside impacts has received considerable attention and safety standards have been promulgated, field studies show that a majority of far-side occupant injuries are focused on the head and thorax. The 50th percentile male Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) has been used in oblique and lateral far-side impact sled tests, and regional body accelerations and forces and moments recorded by load cells have been previously reported. The aim of this study is to evaluate the chestband-based deflection responses from these tests.Methods: The 3-point belt–restrained 50th percentile male THOR dummy was seated upright in a buck consisting of a rigid flat seat, simulated center console, dashboard, far-side side door structure, and armrest. It was designed to conduct pure lateral and oblique impacts. The center console, dashboard, simulated door structure, and armrest were covered with energy-absorbing materials. A center-mounted airbag was mounted to the right side of the seat. Two 59-gage chestbands were routed on the circumference of the thorax, with the upper and lower chestbands at the level of the third and sixth ribs, respectively, following the rib geometry. Oblique and pure lateral far-side impact tests with and without airbags were conducted at 8.3 m/s. Maximum chest deflections were computed by processing temporal contours using custom software and 3 methods: Procedures paralleling human cadaver studies, using the actual anchor point location and actual alignment of the InfraRed Telescoping Rods for the Assessment of Chest Compression (IR-TRACC) in the dummy on each aspect—that is, right or left,—and using the same anchor location of the internal sensor but determining the location of the peak chest deflection on the contour confined to the aspect of the sensor; these were termed the SD, ID, and TD metrics, respectively.Results: All deformation contours at the upper and lower thorax levels and associated peak deflections are given for all tests. Briefly, the ID metrics were the lowest in magnitude for both pure lateral and oblique modes, regardless of the presence or absence of an airbag. This was followed by the TD metric, and the SD metric produced the greatest deflections.Conclusion: The chestbands provide a unique opportunity to compute peak deflections that parallel current IR-TRACC-type deflections and allow computation of peak deflections independent of the initial point of attachment to the rib. The differing locations of the peak deflection vectors along the rib contours for different test conditions suggest that a priori attachment is less effective. Further, varying magnitudes of the differences between ID and TD metrics underscore the difficulty in extrapolating ID outputs under different conditions: Pure lateral versus oblique, airbag presence, and thoracic levels. Deflection measurements should, therefore, not be limited to an instrument that can only track from a fixed point. For improved predictions, these results suggest the need to investigate alternative techniques, such as optical methods to improve chest deflection measurements for far-side occupant injury assessment and mitigation.

Evaluation of Hybrid III and THOR-M neck kinetics and injury risk under various restraint conditions during full-scale frontal sled tests

Objective: The objective of this research was to compare the kinetics and predicted injury risks of the Hybrid III (HIII) and Test device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR)-M necks during full-scale frontal sled tests under 3 safety restraint conditions: knee bolster (KB), knee bolster and steering wheel airbag (KB/SWAB), and knee bolster airbag and steering wheel airbag (KBAB/SWAB).Methods: Twelve sled tests were performed for the HIII and THOR-M, and 8 matched sled tests were performed using postmortem human surrogates (PMHSs). The tests were designed to match the 2012 Toyota Camry New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) full-scale crash test. Upper and lower neck forces and moments were collected from the HIII and THOR-M load cells. Inverse dynamics was used to calculate PMHS upper neck forces and moments from acceleration data until the time of head contact. The PMHSs experienced head contact with the SWAB before appreciable neck loading occurred. Therefore, PMHS neck forces and moments were only compared to the HIII and THOR-M for the KB condition. Neck injury risks were calculated for the HIII and THOR-M and were compared to the injuries observed for the PMHSs.Results: The HIII had greater upper and lower neck shear forces than the THOR-M, whereas both surrogates had similar upper and lower neck axial forces. The HIII also experienced greater peak upper neck bending moments than the THOR-M, which experienced negligible upper neck bending moments. Before head contact, the PMHSs experienced upper neck flexion, and the HIII experienced extension. The HIII and THOR-M injury risk curves predicted less than a 50% risk of an Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 3+ injury. No AIS 3+ neck injuries were observed for the PMHS tests, but at least one AIS 2 injury was observed per condition.Conclusions: The results of this study showed that the HIII and THOR-M had different neck kinetics for these restraint conditions. In particular, the THOR-M experienced lower upper neck shear forces and bending moments. These differences are likely due to the very different neck designs of the anthropomorphic test dummies (ATDs), particularly the increased compliance of the THOR-M neck. Despite these differences, both ATDs still predicted a similar risk of AIS 3+ neck injury.

Comparison of response variation of THOR and Hybrid III dummy Models in a controlled rollover impact model

ABSTRACTSeveral dynamic rollover test procedures have been developed over the years; however, the repeatability of test results is often questioned. Also, there can be sensitivity of test and simulation results to small variations in the initial conditions. The objective of this study is to evaluate the response variation of three different crash dummy finite element (FE) models (two versions of a 50th percentile male Hybrid III (HIII) and a Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) dummy) in a simulation of a controlled rollover test, using a late model vehicle FE model. A baseline model was established with each dummy, and then a global sensitivity analysis was performed for each dummy varying vehicle design and crash parameters. The simplified HIII dummy model was very sensitive to small variations in the initial conditions of the test. Both the THOR and detailed HIII models gave very consistent results presenting similar trends in the sensitivity analysis.

Development of thoracic injury risk functions for the THOR ATD

The Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) 50th percentile male anthropomorphic test device (ATD) aims to improve the ability to predict the risk of chest injury to restrained automobile occupants by measuring dynamic chest deflection at multiple locations. This research aimed to describe the methods for developing a thoracic injury risk function (IRF) using the multi-point chest deflection metrics from the 50th percentile male THOR Metric ATD with the SD-3 shoulder and associating to post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) outcomes that were matched on identical frontal and frontal-oblique impact sled testing conditions. Several deflection metrics were assessed as potential predictor variables for AIS 3+ injury risk, including a combined metric, called PC Score, which was generated from a principal component analysis. A parametric survival analysis (specifically, accelerated failure time (AFT) with Weibull distribution) was assessed in the development of the IRF. Model fit was assessed using various modeling diagnostics, including the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Models based on resultant deflection consistently exhibited improved fit compared to models based on x-axis deflection or chord deflection. Risk functions for the THOR PC Score and Cmax (maximum resultant deflection) were qualitatively equivalent, producing AUCs of 0.857 and 0.861, respectively. Adjusting for the potential confounding effects of age, AFT survival models with Cmax or PC Score as the primary deflection metric resulted in the THOR injury risk models with the best combination of biomechanical appropriateness, potential utility and model fit, and may be recommended as injury predictors.

Evaluation of driver lower extremity injuries in 16 oblique crashes with THOR

Injuries to the lower extremity (LE) continue to occur in frontal crashes despite increased attention on the vehicle structure and restraint design. This study focuses on thigh, leg, foot, and ankle injuries as well as occupant factors and intrusion levels. Sixteen vehicles, including three same types, with same moving deformable barriers of the same mass, velocity, and barrier face properties, and the same occupant Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) 50th percentile adult male in the driver's seat were used to conduct oblique impact test. Data from the left (driver side) oblique crash tests conducted by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were used in this paper to analyse the detailed intrusion characteristics and the driver side THOR injuries from head to foot in these 16 tests. Different regions of the THOR dummy were analysed. Maximum values of all lower extremity injury criteria were obtained and analysed. Intrusion and lower extremity injuries correlation was found, knee airbag and lower extremity injury correlation was also analysed. The foot-well X and Y intrusions in the 16 tests rank from minimum 14 to maximum 309 mm and from −7 to 184 mm, independently. Sixty-nine per cent right knee displacement is greater than the left knee displacement. Thirty-one per cent knee displacement and 44% left upper tibia force of the 16 tests have values that exceed injury assessment reference values. Left upper tibia force was generally greater than other tibia forces. Half of the left upper tibia index (TI) and 37.5% of the right lower TI do not meet the standard value. The foot/ankle complex is generally at a higher risk than the other parts of the leg. Same vehicle reproducibility and injury were also analysed. Right knee displacement, left femur force, left upper tibia force, left upper TI, and left ankle rotation are the most critical injuries in the respective regions of the lower extremity. Intrusion may be more prominent in some frontal damage types than in others, but not the only reason for lower extremity injuries. Other factors that influence LE injuries are the position of driver foot, the geometry of the foot-well area, the direction of intrusion, the impact energy, and acceleration of the floor. Lower extremity is the most frequently injured body region with respect to more serious injuries in the analysed test data.

Development and evaluation of a finite element model of the THOR for occupant protection of spaceflight crewmembers

New vehicles are currently being developed to transport humans to space. During the landing phases, crewmembers may be exposed to spinal and frontal loading. To reduce the risk of injuries during these common impact scenarios, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is developing new safety standards for spaceflight. The Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) advanced multi-directional anthropomorphic test device (ATD), with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration modification kit, has been chosen to evaluate occupant spacecraft safety because of its improved biofidelity.NASA tested the THOR ATD at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in various impact configurations, including frontal and spinal loading. A computational finite element model (FEM) of the THOR to match these latest modifications was developed in LS-DYNA software. The main goal of this study was to calibrate and validate the THOR FEM for use in future spacecraft safety studies.An optimization-based method was developed to calibrate the material models of the lumbar joints and pelvic flesh. Compression test data were used to calibrate the quasi-static material properties of the pelvic flesh, while whole body THOR ATD kinematic and kinetic responses under spinal and frontal loading conditions were used for dynamic calibration. The performance of the calibrated THOR FEM was evaluated by simulating separate THOR ATD tests with different crash pulses along both spinal and frontal directions. The model response was compared with test data by calculating its correlation score using the CORrelation and Analysis rating system. The biofidelity of the THOR FEM was then evaluated against tests recorded on human volunteers under 3 different frontal and spinal impact pulses.The calibrated THOR FEM responded with high similarity to the THOR ATD in all validation tests. The THOR FEM showed good biofidelity relative to human-volunteer data under spinal loading, but limited biofidelity under frontal loading. This may suggest a need for further improvements in both the THOR ATD and FEM. Overall, results presented in this study provide confidence in the THOR FEM for use in predicting THOR ATD responses for conditions, such as those observed in spacecraft landing, and for use in evaluating THOR ATD biofidelity.

Development, Calibration, and Validation of a Head–Neck Complex of THOR Mod Kit Finite Element Model

Introduction/Objective: In an effort to continually improve upon the design of the test device for human occupant restraint (THOR) dummy, a series of modifications have recently been applied. The first objective of this study was to update the THOR head–neck finite element (FE) model to the specifications of the latest dummy modifications. The second objective was to develop and apply a new optimization-based methodology to calibrate the FE head–neck model based on experimental test data. The calibrated head–neck model was validated against both frontal and lateral impact test data. Finally, the sensitivities of the model, in terms of head and neck injury criteria, to pretest positioning conditions were evaluated in a frontal crash test simulation.Methods: The updated parts of the head–neck THOR FE model were remeshed from CAD geometries of the modified parts. In addition, further model modifications were made to improve the effectiveness of the model (e.g., model stability). A novel calibration methodology, which incorporates the CORA (CORelation and Analysis) rating system with an optimization algorithm implemented in Isight software, was developed to improve both kinematic and kinetic responses of the model in various THOR dummy certification and biomechanical response tests. A parametric study was performed to evaluate head and neck injury criteria values in the calibrated head–neck model during a 40 km/h frontal crash test with respect to variation in the THOR model upper body and belt pretest position.Results: Material parameter optimization was shown to greatly improve the updated model response by increasing the average rating score from 0.794 ± 0.073 to 0.964 ± 0.019. The calibrated neck showed the biggest improvement in the pendulum flexion simulation from 0.681 in the original model up to 0.96 in the calibrated model. The fully calibrated model proved to be effective at predicting dummy response in frontal and lateral loading conditions during the validation phase (0.942 average score). Upper body position was shown to have a greater effect on head–neck response than belt position. The pretest positioning variation resulted in a 10 percent maximum change in HIC36 values and 14 percent maximum change in NIJ values.Conclusion: The optimization-based calibration methodology was effective as it markedly improved model performance. The calibrated head–neck model demonstrated application in a crash safety analysis, showing slight head–neck injury sensitivity to pretest positioning in a frontal crash impact scenario.

Sensitivity of THOR and Hybrid III Dummy Lower Neck Loads to Belt Systems in Frontal Impact

Objectives: To determine head–neck biomechanics with a focus on lower neck injury metrics in frontal impact. The mid- and large-size Hybrid III dummies and the mid-size Test device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) were positioned on a buck. Tests were conducted at low, medium, and high (3.3, 6.7, and 15.7 m/s) change in velocities using 3 restraint types: normal 3-point belt with no pretension (type A), 10-cm pretension (type B), and 200 N pretension (type C). Repeat tests were conducted. Measured vertical and shear forces and sagittal bending moments were evaluated at the upper and lower regions of the neck to different types of belt systems and at different change in velocities. Peak values normalized with respect to the belt type A were used in the comparative analysis. Metrics transformed to the occipital condyles and T1 were also evaluated. Results: All dummies showed good repeatability. Peak measured and transformed upper and lower neck moments were greatest in the large-size dummy. The mid-size Hybrid III dummy responded with greater forces and moments than the THOR. Regardless of dummy type, anthropometry, and velocity, peak lower neck moments were more sensitive to belt types than peak lower neck forces. A similar pattern was apparent for upper neck data. Moments in the THOR were more sensitive than moments in the mid-size Hybrid III dummy. Conclusions: This study offers quantitative generic restraint-based data and addresses response differences between dummies and dummies of the same family. Because of increased sensitivity to belt types at the upper and lower necks for both forces and moments, the THOR appears to be an improvement to better assess injury potential to rear seat occupants wherein frontal impact air bags do not exist.

In rail passenger seating arrangements with workstation tables, there is a risk of serious thoracic and abdominal injury. Strategies to mitigate this injury risk are being developed through a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration and the Rail Safety and Standards Board of the United Kingdom. The approach to developing the protection strategies involves collision investigations, computer simulations of the occupant response, and full-scale testing. During the train collision in Placentia, California, on April 23, 2002, many occupants hit workstation tables. The investigation indicated the likely modes of injury caused by the impact, the most traumatic being damage to the liver and spleen. A MADYMO computer simulation was created to estimate the loads and accelerations imparted on the occupants that brought about these injuries. Two experiments were designed and executed on a full-scale impact test with an occupant environment similar to the Placentia collision. These experiments incorporated advanced anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs) with increased abdominal instrumentation. The THOR (test device for human occupant restraint) ATD showed a more humanlike impact response than did the Hybrid III Railway Safety ATD. The full-scale test results are used to refine a MADYMO model of the THOR ATD to evaluate improved workstation tables. The occupant protection strategy that will be developed requires that the table remain rigidly attached to the car body and includes a frangible edge with a force-crush characteristic designed to minimize the abdominal load and compression. MADYMO simulations of this table design show a significantly reduced risk of severe abdominal injury.
