Assessing the sustainability of Blue Economy activities using an ecosystem and life cycle-based approach: Possibilities, challenges and implications for an informed policy making

The global ocean faces increasing exploitation to meet the demand of a rapidly growing globalisation. Human marine activities are leading to local environmental pressures/benefits, for example on marine ecosystems and their services, but also through their value chains on terrestrial ecosystem services, and to global pressures such as global warming. Effective management of marine activities is essential for the conservation of the natural environment. There is a growing need for holistic sustainability assessment tools capable of quantifying environmental impacts at various geographical scales, alongside evidence-informed policies. This study examines the evolving marine policy landscape, identifies key legislation that supports the sustainable growth of the Blue Economy, traces its historical development, and explores the integration of ecosystem services assessment and life cycle assessment as methodologies for assessing environmental sustainability within this legislation. The review shows that current legislation falls short in providing instructions on how to measure sustainability impacts in a consistent way, i.e., which methods/indicators to use. Therefore, this study supports evidence-informed policy-making by proposing a quantitative and comprehensive environmental sustainability impact assessment methodology, integrating both ecosystem and life-cycle based methods, to a Belgian multi-use case study involving offshore wind energy and mussel farming. Considering the impacts that were possible to assess and the limits of the methodology used, the value of the positive impacts of the MUOF was +61.3 M€ y−, while the negative ones were −4.0 M€ y−1, resulting in a net handprint of +57.0 M€ y−1, primarily attributed to the benefits of the local ecosystem service ‘offshore renewable energy’ However, such a solution is not necessarily scalable, due to cumulative impacts. An analysis was conducted to identify areas for enhancing the methodology to more effectively meet policy needs. The study highlights the importance of using scientifically grounded methods to inform policy decisions.

Deforestation amplifies climate change effects on warming and cloud level rise in African montane forests

Tropical montane forest ecosystems are pivotal for sustaining biodiversity and essential terrestrial ecosystem services, including the provision of high-quality fresh water. Nonetheless, the impact of montane deforestation and climate change on the capacity of forests to deliver ecosystem services is yet to be fully understood. In this study, we offer observational evidence demonstrating the response of air temperature and cloud base height to deforestation in African montane forests over the last two decades. Our findings reveal that approximately 18% (7.4 ± 0.5 million hectares) of Africa’s montane forests were lost between 2003 and 2022. This deforestation has led to a notable increase in maximum air temperature (1.37 ± 0.58 °C) and cloud base height (236 ± 87 metres), surpassing shifts attributed solely to climate change. Our results call for urgent attention to montane deforestation, as it poses serious threats to biodiversity, water supply, and ecosystem services in the tropics.

Water level regime variation is a crucial driver for taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity in seasonally flooded tropical forests

Floodplains contribute significantly to terrestrial ecosystem service provision but are also among the most vulnerable and degraded ecosystems worldwide. Heterogeneity in floodplain properties arises from variations in river-specific flood regimes, watershed characteristics, and valley morphology, influencing seasonally flooded forests' taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity. This study addresses persisting knowledge gaps in floodplain ecology, focusing on the seasonally dry tropics. We explore the relationships between flood regime, environmental conditions, vegetation composition, functional and phylogenetic diversity, and the impact of environmental variables on above-ground biomass (AGB) and ecological strategies. The study spans six rivers in southeastern Brazil's main river basins: Rio Grande and São Francisco. We identified five eco-units in each floodplain based on flooding regimes and surveyed six plots per eco-unit. We measured trees with DBH > 5 cm and collected functional traits, along with detailed soil, climate, and water level data. We calculated plot-level floristic composition, taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity, wood density, and AGB. Functional and phylogenetic dissimilarity were analyzed, and the effects of climate, soil, and hydrological variables were quantified using generalized linear mixed models. We show how flood frequency and duration affect floristic composition across the floodplains. Taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity responded to climate, soil, and hydrological variables, while functional diversity responded primarily to hydrological variables, emphasizing the role of environmental filtering. Hydrological seasonality, soil fertility, and flood regime emerged as key factors shaping community structure and ecological strategies in the studied seasonally flooded tropical forests. Plot-level AGB responded to phosphorus but not to climate or hydrological variables. The study also highlights functional and phylogenetic dissimilarities among eco-units and basins, indicating potential climate change impacts.

Global trends and scenarios for terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem services from 1900 to 2050.

Based on an extensive model intercomparison, we assessed trends in biodiversity and ecosystem services from historical reconstructions and future scenarios of land-use and climate change. During the 20th century, biodiversity declined globally by 2 to 11%, as estimated by a range of indicators. Provisioning ecosystem services increased several fold, and regulating services decreased moderately. Going forward, policies toward sustainability have the potential to slow biodiversity loss resulting from land-use change and the demand for provisioning services while reducing or reversing declines in regulating services. However, negative impacts on biodiversity due to climate change appear poised to increase, particularly in the higher-emissions scenarios. Our assessment identifies remaining modeling uncertainties but also robustly shows that renewed policy efforts are needed to meet the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Light grazing alleviates aeolian erosion–deposition effects on microbial communities in a semi-arid grassland

BackgroundSoil erosion affects the stability of terrestrial ecosystems and ecosystem services by directly or indirectly impacting the cycling of soil materials and energy and reducing the fertility of grassland soils. However, research on microbial adaptation to grazing and soil erosion is limited, particularly in relation to grassland ecosystem restoration. Here, we assess microbial communities subjected to simulated soil erosion and grazing in a semi-arid grassland of Inner Mongolia, China.ResultsNo significant change was observed in soil variables. However, the structure of the soil microbial community underwent significant changes as a result of soil erosion and soil erosion plus grazing, leading to a significant increase in the relative abundance of Cyanobacteria (116.80% vs 116.38%). Wind erosion and deposition contributed to an increase in the network complexity of soil bacterial and fungal communities. However, much of this effect was alleviated by grazing. Simultaneously, aeolian processes and grazing regulate soil microbial community assembly, leading to inconsistent patterns of change in bacterial and fungal communities. Under wind erosion and deposition, the relative contribution of deterministic processes (4.44% vs 31.11%) in bacterial communities increased, while the relative contribution of stochastic processes (2.23% vs 20%) in fungal communities reduced. Grazing resulted in a decrease in the relative contribution of deterministic processes (8.89%) in the bacterial community and an increase in the relative contribution of stochastic processes (8.89%) in the fungal community.ConclusionThis study presents a comprehensive investigation of the response of soil microbial communities to aeolian erosion–deposition and grazing in a semi-arid grassland. Our findings indicate that microbial communities in the semi-arid grassland show resistance to external disturbances and that light grazing mitigates the effects of aeolian erosion–deposition on microbial communities, which is essential for maintaining the stability and biodiversity of grassland ecosystems.

Oxalate and oxalotrophy: an environmental perspective

Abstract Oxalic acid is one of the most abundant organic acids produced by plants. Much of the global production of oxalic acid is deposited on soil surfaces in leaf litter to be oxidized by microorganisms, resulting in a pH increase and shifting the carbonate equilibria. In what is known as the oxalate-carbonate pathway, calcium oxalate metabolism results in CO2 being sequestered into soils as insoluble calcite (CaCO3). There is a growing appreciation that the global scale of this process is sufficiently large to be an important contribution to global carbon turnover budgets. The microbiomics, genetics, and enzymology of oxalotrophy are all soundly established, although a more detailed understanding of the landscape-scale kinetics of the process would be needed to incorporate oxalotrophy as an element of process models informing the relevant Sustainable Development Goals. Here, we review the current state of knowledge of oxalotrophs and oxalotrophy and the role they play in terrestrial ecosystem services and functions in terms of carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling. We emphasize the relevance of these to the Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) and highlight the importance of recognizing oxalotrophy, when accounting for the natural capital value of an ecosystem.

Impacts of habitat connectivity on grassland arthropod metacommunity structure: A field-based experimental test of theory.

Metacommunity theory has advanced scientific understanding of how species interactions and spatial processes influence patterns of biodiversity and community structure across landscapes. While the central tenets of metacommunity theory have been promoted as pivotal considerations for conservation management, few field experiments have tested the validity of metacommunity predictions. Here, we tested one key prediction of metacommunity theory-that decreasing habitat connectivity should erode metacommunity structure by hindering species movement between patches. For 2 years, we manipulated an experimental old-field grassland ecosystem via mowing to represent four levels of habitat connectivity: (1) open control, (2) full connectivity, (3) partial connectivity, and (4) no connectivity. Within each treatment plot (10 × 10 m, n = 4 replicates), we measured the abundance and diversity (i.e., alpha and beta) of both flying and ground arthropods using sticky and pitfall traps, respectively. We found that the abundance and diversity of highly mobile flying arthropods were unaffected by habitat connectivity, whereas less mobile ground arthropods were highly impacted. The mean total abundance of ground arthropods was 2.5× and 2× higher in the control and partially connected plots compared to isolated patches, respectively. We also reveal that habitat connectivity affected the trophic interactions of ground arthropods, with predators (e.g., wolf spiders, ground spiders) being highly positively correlated with micro-detritivores (springtails, mites) but not macro-detritivores (millipedes, isopods) as habitat connectivity increased. Together these findings indicate that changes in habitat connectivity can alter the metacommunity structure for less mobile organisms such as ground arthropods. Because of their essential roles in terrestrial ecosystem functioning and services, we recommend that conservationists, restoration practitioners, and land managers include principles of habitat connectivity for ground arthropods when designing biodiversity management programs.

Integrated Terrestrial and Marine Ecosystem Services Valuation and Result Variation Trends: A Case Study of Jiangsu Province, China

Quantitative ecosystem services valuation (ESV) is the key to effective environmental protection and ecosystem restoration. Studies have focused on terrestrial ecosystems and are mainly based on static analyses, excluding marine ecosystem service values and their variability. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated terrestrial and offshore ecosystem service values in Jiangsu Province in 2010 and 2018 using a table of unit area value equivalence factors and a vertically generalized production model (VGPM) to estimate marine primary productivity. The results showed that the terrestrial ESV in Jiangsu Province was 322.740 and 477.798 billion yuan in 2010 and 2018, respectively. The ESV of hydrological regulation in water areas was the highest, whereas that of unutilized land was the lowest. The ESV in different prefectural-level cities exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity and were highly correlated with the proportion, protection, and rational utilization of urban water areas. The offshore ESV in Jiangsu Province was 426.011 and 460.438 billion yuan in 2010 and 2018, respectively; the farther from land, the lower the ecosystem service value. The value of ecological regulation services is the dominant factor in the comprehensive services of terrestrial and offshore ecosystems in Jiangsu Province (accounting for 80% of ESV). From 2010 to 2018, the overall terrestrial and offshore ESV in Jiangsu Province rose by 188.901 billion yuan, increasing by 25.28% from 2010. In future, boundaries of development in production activities should be controlled, the protection and restoration of the ecological environment promoted, and regulatory functions and cultural services of ecosystems rationally exploited.

Impacts of climate extremes on vegetation dynamics in a transect along the Hu Line of China

Climate projections infer increasing frequency of extreme events in the future which would alter terrestrial hydrologic functioning and ecosystem services. Understanding the responses of vegetation to extreme events can provide prerequisite knowledge to mitigate climate change impacts. The relationships between climate extremes and vegetation phenology and productivity were examined for a transect along the Hu Line across China during 1988–2014. Results show that high frequency and severity of droughts existed in the mid-latitude regions where happened to be mostly occupied by grassland and cropland with relatively low productivity compared to trees. Prolonged growing seasons (4.3 days/decade) resulted mostly from advanced green-up were observed over the transect. No strong impact of extreme droughts on vegetation was observed for any plant functional types, due to the timing of drought occurrences primarily in pre- and post-growing seasons while water supply was likely not so limited during growth indicated by a drought index. Non-woody plants in the mid-to-high latitudes (37-54°N) were identified more sensitive to climate extremes than woody plants in the low latitudes. Meanwhile, grassland in the relatively low-elevation areas (<1000 m.a.s.l) was more responsive than that in the high-elevation areas. Productivity above 45°N increased with drought severity attributable to an intensified favorable environment during frequent and mild droughts with warmer temperature and increased solar radiation. The results may suggest the generally relative stability of the ecosystems along the Hu Line, however, with further deteriorating climate, the stable relationships between climate and ecosystems may be shifted, likely starting from low-elevation grassland.

Establishing a quantitative assessment methodology framework of water conservation based on the water balance method under spatiotemporal and different discontinuous ecosystem scales

Water conservation (WC) is an essential terrestrial ecosystem service that mitigates surface runoff and replenishes groundwater, which has received considerable attention under the dual pressures of climate change and human activity. However, there is insufficient understanding of the trends in WC changes on temporal (annual, monthly, daily), spatial, and ecosystem scales. This study proposed a quantitative assessment methodology framework (QAMF) for analyzing the spatiotemporal variation of WC under different discontinuous ecosystems. The QAMF mainly used models and methods such as the hydrological model (SWAT), calibration and uncertainty program (SWAT-CUP), WC calculation formula (water balance method), and spatial analysis method (empirical orthogonal function and wavelet analysis). It was applied to the source region of the Yellow River (SRYR), where the ecological landscape pattern underwent varying degrees of degradation, and WC capacity decreased. The results show that: Firstly, the constructed SWAT in the SRYR had high accuracy, and the proposed formula for calculating WC was suitable for multi-temporal scale analysis of WC in spatially distributed discontinuous basins. Secondly, the annual and monthly WC were respectively 81.00–184.13 mm and −28.58–107.64 mm, and daily WC was positive during extreme precipitation periods and negative during dry periods. The regulating effect of WC was fully reflected on the daily scale, partially reflected on the monthly scale, and absent on the annual scale. Third, the crucial WC area was mainly distributed in the southeast, and there was a significant primary yearly cycle of WC in the SRYR. Finally, different ecosystems exhibited different WC capabilities, and protecting the diversity of ecosystems played an essential role in maintaining and improving the WC function in the SRYR. This project has great scientific significance and technological support for scientifically evaluating the WC capacity in the SRYR.

Assessment of multiple factors and interactions affecting grassland degradation on the Tibetan Plateau

The Tibetan Plateau (TP), a vital region for terrestrial ecosystem services and biodiversity, is facing severe grassland degradation influenced by multiple factors. However, it remains unclear how several influential factors interactively influence grassland degradation. Here, we used five land cover products and six vegetation indexes to quantify grassland degradation on the TP. We then applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to quantitatively assess multiple factors and interactions affecting grassland degradation. We found that grassland degradation on the TP was mainly concentrated in the central and southern regions which were under high pressure from human activities, with the area of 325,430 km2, accounting for about 12.63% of the total grassland area on the TP during 2000–2020. The factors such as overgrazing, climate change, and human activities have contributed to the grassland degradation on the TP. Moreover, we found that there is a complex and interrelated relationship between these factors and that addressing one factor alone is unlikely to solve the problem of grassland degradation. Human activities significantly (p < 0.05) influenced grassland degradation on the TP, while climate factors had a greater direct effect (0.384) compared to soil factors (0.298) and human activities (0.263). Soil factors, on the other hand, had a greater total effect (0.388) than human activities (0.263) and climate factors (0.161). The topography of the TP played an indirect role (−0.4) in slowing down the degradation of grasslands by significantly (P < 0.05) affecting human activities and climate. In order to fully understand the truth about grassland degradation and to avoid further grassland degradation, it is necessary to consider multiple influencing factors and their interactions.

Drought-induced vulnerability and resilience of different land use types using time series of MODIS-based indices

Drought is a creeping and complex phenomenon that significantly impacts terrestrial ecosystem services by reducing the ecosystem's performance and upsetting the balance of the terrestrial carbon cycle. This study used Google Earth Engine (GEE) to quantify the effects of drought on the vulnerability and resilience of land use and land cover (LULC) types in the Karkheh basin, Iran's food basket and the third-largest basin in southwest Iran. Using MODIS data, we first extracted the vegetation health index (VHI) for drought monitoring during 2000–2020, and as a result, 2008 was designated as the drought year. Then, water use efficiency (WUE) was calculated for all LULC types during drought. In general, all LULC types experienced an increase in WUE, with the highest increase seen in the forest , which indicates the forest's high resistance to drought. To evaluate the ecosystems' resilience to drought, we computed the drought recovery period using the gross primary production (GPP). The results showed that recovery times varied among different LULC types, with the forest recovering in the shortest time, further indicating a higher resilience and greater importance for the absorption and stabilization of terrestrial carbon. Conversely, rainfed farming had the longest recovery time, indicating a higher vulnerability and, consequently, a greater need for the adoption of appropriate adaptive measures. The results of this study provide a better understanding of the response of different LULC types and their resilience to drought and can assist ecosystem conservation and LULC management.

Mapping linkages between ecosystem services and agricultural and landscape management using structural topic modeling of scientific literature

This paper provides a systematic overview of existing literature on the interdependence between terrestrial Ecosystem Services (ES) and agricultural landscape management. To this end, we constructed a structured methodological approach that future researchers and other stakeholders may use to explore potential gaps for potential avenues for research. The framework starts with a constructed bibliometric dataset comprising 2478 paper abstracts (and associated metadata) published between 2010 and 2019 that contain references to specific ES classes and case study location references worldwide. Next, the dataset was used to construct a Structural Topic Model (STM), which features marginal effect estimation of metadata covariates on topic prevalence and topic prevalence correlation. The estimated topic graph structure is then used for community detection of interconnected topics via cluster identification, which allowed us to determine the current structure of the academic discourse on the interaction between terrestrial ES and agricultural landscape management. We expect this novel approach to enable identification of research priorities, prioritization of project portfolios for our field of interest, and reusable methodological guidelines that can be employed to target other fields of knowledge similarly.

Spatial Heterogeneity of Vegetation Resilience Changes to Different Drought Types

AbstractResilience is a fundamental concept for vegetation health. The increasing drought frequency and severity may pose severe threat to vegetation resilience. However, it is still not clear how vegetation resilience is evolving in response to climate change in pivotal biographical zones. Here, we examined the resilience changes in terms of leaf area index (LAI, an indicator of canopy structure) and gross primary productivity (GPP, an indicator of carbon uptake) in responding to the Standardized Precipitation‐Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) over China's Loess Plateau and Qinling Mountains. Linking remote sensing variables and tree ring width allows the upscaling of plot‐based vegetation growth information. We further explored potential explanatory factors associated with the heterogeneous spatial distributions of resilience changes. Results revealed that the resilience of GPP weakened more than LAI in response to drought, suggesting that compared to LAI, productivity requires more time to recover to the pre‐drought levels. Regionally, the change of vegetation resilience on the Loess Plateau and in high‐altitude areas was highly susceptible to SPEI and VPD, respectively. The observed spatial heterogeneity in resilience changes was mainly attributed by climate zone, water deficit, and their interactions. Our findings provide direct and empirical evidence that the vegetation in the Loess Plateau and Qinling Mountains is gradually losing resilience. The results indicate that sustained ecosystem water deficit and atmospheric dryness will continue to threaten vegetation survival and terrestrial ecosystem service.

From remotely sensed solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence to ecosystem structure, function, and service: Part I-Harnessing theory.

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is a remotely sensed optical signal emitted during the light reactions of photosynthesis. The past two decades have witnessed an explosion in availability of SIF data at increasingly higher spatial and temporal resolutions, sparking applications in diverse research sectors (e.g., ecology, agriculture, hydrology, climate, and socioeconomics). These applications must deal with complexities caused by tremendous variations in scale and the impacts of interacting and superimposing plant physiology and three-dimensional vegetation structure on the emission and scattering of SIF. At present, these complexities have not been overcome. To advance future research, the two companion reviews aim to (1) develop an analytical framework for inferring terrestrial vegetation structures and function that are tied to SIF emission, (2) synthesize progress and identify challenges in SIF research via the lens of multi-sector applications, and (3) map out actionable solutions to tackle these challenges and offer our vision for research priorities over the next 5-10 years based on the proposed analytical framework. This paper is the first of the two companion reviews, and theory oriented. It introduces a theoretically rigorous yet practically applicable analytical framework. Guided by this framework, we offer theoretical perspectives on three overarching questions: (1) The forward (mechanism) question-How are the dynamics of SIF affected by terrestrial ecosystem structure and function? (2) The inference question: What aspects of terrestrial ecosystem structure, function, and service can be reliably inferred from remotely sensed SIF and how? (3) The innovation question: What innovations are needed to realize the full potential of SIF remote sensing for real-world applications under climate change? The analytical framework elucidates that process complexity must be appreciated in inferring ecosystem structure and function from the observed SIF; this framework can serve as a diagnosis and inference tool for versatile applications across diverse spatial and temporal scales.

Global decadal assessment of life below water and on land

The United Nations (UN) has adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to provide human welfare and conserve the planet, now and into the future. Two of the SDGs directly address biodiversity conservation and sustainable development- SDG 14 (life below water) and SDG 15 (life on land). Although the UN has issued annual reports on SDGs, the reports did not consistently reveal the progress over time, because of inconsistent methods such as estimation based on different indicators across years. Our research examined the dynamics of the same 10 indicators for SDGs 14 and 15 between 2010 and 2020. Results indicate that the overall SDG 14 scores had a small growth between 2010 and 2020, whereas the substantial increase in SDG 15 scores spotlighted the conservation efforts and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystem services, especially in countries with biodiversity hotspots. Globally, there was more progress in terms of SDG 15 scores during 2015-2020 than during 2010-2015 (before the UN adopted SDGs in 2015). Surprisingly, SDG 14 score had smaller progress during 2015-2020 than during 2010-2015. Special attention should be given to low-income countries lagging in sustainable development performance when implementing the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

Land-Use/Land-Cover Change and Ecosystem Service Provision in Qinghai Province, China: From the Perspective of Five Ecological Function Zones

Qinghai Province is an important part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and has special importance in the construction of ecological civilisation in China, which is related to the ecological security of the country and long-term development. The land is the basis of terrestrial ecosystem services. Land use/cover change (LUCC) can alter the structure, distribution and processes of terrestrial ecosystems, thereby affecting ecosystem services. Ecological Function Zone (EFZ) is the special zone designated by the government to protect ecosystems more effectively. Studying the response of ecosystem services value (ESV) to LUCC within EFZ is of great significance to the construction of ecological civilization in Qinghai Province. This study uses five periods of land use data from 1980 to 2020 and selects the equivalent factor method, correction method and elasticity model to analyse the characteristics of land use change and its impact on the value of ecosystem services. The conclusions are as follows. (1) The results showed that the ESV of Qinghai Province decreased from 822.559 billion yuan in 1980 to 819.903 billion yuan in 2000, and then increased rapidly to 905.775 billion yuan in 2020, showing a total increase of 83.216 billion yuan (1 RMB equates to 0.144129 USD). The restoration of grassland and the expansion of water bodies are the main reasons for the growth of ESV. (2) The ESV of Sanjiangyuan EFZ was the highest, followed by Qaidam EFZ, Qinghai Lake EFZ and Qilian Mountains EFZ, while Hehuang EFZ was the lowest. (3) The elasticity of the ESV to LUCC generally declined in all EFZs. Every 1% change in the LUCC in the Qaidam EFZ will result in a 4.78% change in ESV, followed by the Sanjiangyuan EFZ (2.56%), Qilian Mountains EFZ (2.1%), Qinghai Lake EFZ (1.01%), and the Hehuang EFZ with the lowest elasticity index (0.53%). (4) The distribution of the high values of the ESV elasticity gradually expands, with a clear spatial distribution characteristic of high west and low east. (5) The most suitable area for urban construction in Qinghai Province is the Hehuang EFZ, and urban construction in the Qaidam EFZ should avoid encroaching on water bodies or polluting water sources. The conclusions can provide a reference for optimising the land use structure and harmonising conservation and development in Qinghai Province.

Accounting of public preferences and valuation of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem services restoration: Evidence from Northwestern China

The emphasis of current study is on the assessment of households’ willingness to pay (WTP) and preference heterogeneity for the upgradation of degraded terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem services across sub-basins of Heihe River. A sum of 1679 households were interviewed through choice experiment, and random parameter logit model is applied for welfare estimation. The estimated results signified the importance of selected terrestrial and aquatic ecological attributes. Sampled respondents of upper and middle basins placed highest WTP for reducing the emission of greenhouse gases among all other attributes and the WTP amount was 99.27 and 66.49 Yuan/Year respectively. Whereas in lower basin, improvement in landscape of farmland was highly valued, i.e., 107 Yuan/Year. In terrestrial ecosystem services the lowest WTP was recorded for Ejinaqi oasis size in all sub basins. In aquatic ecosystem services, improving water quality was the most valued attribute in all sub basins, and the corresponding WTP values are 122.81, 99.87 and 177.43 Yuan/Year in upper, middle and lower basins respectively, which ensure the significance of water quality in the entire basin. In aquatic ecosystem services the lowest WTP amount was recorded for leisure and entertainment conditions in each sub basin.

Long‐term and seasonal variation of open‐surface water bodies in the Yellow River Basin during 1990–2020

AbstractOpen‐surface water bodies are essential terrestrial water sources and ecosystem service providers, and their evaluation is necessary for effective water management. In this study, 36 000 Landsat images of the Yellow River Basin (YRB) were collected, and a multiple index (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Enhanced Vegetation Index, i.e. MNDWI, NDVI and EVI) method was used to identify open‐surface water bodies in the flood and dry seasons during 1990–2020. Our results showed that during these 30 years, YRB surface waters were characterized by spatial and seasonal heterogeneities. The open‐surface water coverage in the upper and middle reaches of the YRB was 8.74‰ and 4.24‰, respectively, less than the average coverage in the whole YRB of 9.45‰. Surface water area was significant larger in flood seasons than in dry seasons, while during 1990–2020, the surface water area increased by 27.5% in the flood season and by 58.9% in the dry season, reaching 7239.2 km2 (flood season) and 6654.8 km2 (dry season) in 2020. Meanwhile the seasonal variation has decreased. Climate factors (winter temperature and summer precipitation) positively correlated with open‐surface water only in the source region of the YRB. In other regions, anthropic factors (e.g. water conservation projects) strongly affected open‐surface water bodies by increasing their spatial area overall and decreasing seasonal differences in their coverage.

Human impact changes hydrological connectivity in a Patagonian fluvial basin

Study regionThe Cronómetro Lake basin situated east of the Andes in Argentina's Patagonian Andean pre-range environment. Study focusWe analyzed the interannual fluctuation in the surface area of Cronómetro Lake (January 2000 to January 2021). We also studied the periods of humidity and drought and the anthropogenic activities in the lake basin to understand their impact on water availability within the basin. New hydrological insights for the regionThe area of Cronómetro Lake decreased by 34% in the last ten years. The lake's area reduction started in 2012, which coincides with the construction of fourteen channels perpendicular to one of its main tributaries (the SN1 Stream). The channelization of the SN1 Stream in its upper basin prevents its water from reaching the Cronómetro Lake. From 2012–2021, we have not observed a decrease in local rainfall or an increase in periods of drought. Therefore, we suggest the channelization of the SN1 Stream is the cause of the lake shrinkage. The reduction of the lake's surface generated the disconnection of the lake from its outflow, which dried. Currently, the Cronómetro Lake basin has become endorheic. The reduction in water availability in the Cronómetro Lake basin causes loss of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem services, with negative implications for local economic activities.
