One size fits all? The role of task complexity in L2 production via the audio chat

The pervasive use of information and computer technology in second or foreign language learning has led researchers to explore the ideal tasks for technological environments to facilitate second language (L2) learning. This study intended to contribute new knowledge to this area by examining the effects of the task complexity manipulated along the variable +-few elements in Robinson’s Cognition Hypothesis on L2 production of 42 lower intermediate Chinese EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners who completed two interactive tasks (simple versus complex) in dyads via audio chat of the video-conferencing platform WeMeet in a laboratory setting. Participants were also instructed to measure the difficulty of the tasks by responding to a self-rating questionnaire immediately after they completed each task. Their L2 output in the two tasks were recorded, transcribed and coded in three dimensions namely, syntactic complexity, lexical complexity and accuracy. SPSS 26 was used for statistical analyses. The results revealed that increasing task complexity induced significantly more lexically complex language. However, it did not result in significant changes in terms of syntactic complexity or accuracy of learners’ L2 output via audio chat. These results contradicted the predictions of the Cognition Hypothesis, suggesting the inapplicability of Cognition Hypothesis in audio chat.

The effects of task complexity and language aptitude on EFL learners’ writing performance

The present study investigated the effects of task complexity and language aptitude on upper-intermediate EFL learners’ argumentative writing performance in terms of syntactic complexity, lexical complexity, accuracy and fluency. The findings of this study demonstrated that increasing task complexity manipulated by the number of elements and the degree of reasoning along the resource-directing dimension leads to enhancement of syntactic complexity and lexical diversity, and there are low correlations between language aptitude (mainly number learning and spelling clues) and writing performance. What’s more, task complexity and language aptitude (and its components) are predictors for writing performance in terms of intraclausal level of syntactic complexity, lexical diversity and fluency. These findings lend partial support to the Cognition hypothesis and Aptitude Complexes Hypothesis in L2 writing. Theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical implications of the study for task design and implementation as well as for task-based assessment in language education programs are discussed.

Online collaborative writing in an online EFL writing class

Most learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) consider writing a challenging task, and they experience difficulties such as organizing thoughts, selecting relevant words to represent their views, and producing rhetorical patterns specific to the target culture. Research into L2 writing suggests that collaboration in the classroom can assist students to set goals, generate ideas, write and edit, and reflect on the task. The effects of collaboration in online classes, however, remain unknown. This quasi-experimental study aims to examine the effect of online collaborative writing (OCW) in an online EFL writing class on students’ writing performance in terms of syntactic complexity, lexical complexity, and fluency. A four-week OCW intervention was carried out with 26 university students enrolled in an online English writing course at A2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Data were collected using writing tasks administered as pre- and post-tests. Fluency, syntactic and lexical complexity were measured and analyzed across tasks. The results showed that OCW in an online EFL writing course improved the lexical complexity and fluency of the writings of students with an A2 level of English proficiency but had no effect on their syntactic complexity. Based on the findings, it is possible to conclude that OCW can be employed to promote students’ writing performance in online EFL classes.

Syntactic complexity in adapted extracurricular reading materials

Extracurricular reading is important for language learning since it is not just beneficial for vocabulary and grammar acquisition, but also useful for other aspects such as reading comprehension. Previous research has focused on the role of linguistic features such as syntactic complexity in adapted textbooks, while little attention has been paid to that in other reading materials such as extracurricular ones. This study examined the syntactic complexity in adapted extracurricular reading texts at five difficulty levels based on five machine learning algorithms. The results showed that the adapted texts differed significantly across the five levels in terms of syntactic complexity, with large effect sizes. In addition, three indices of syntactic complexity, i.e., DC/T, MLS, and CN/C, were found to well distinguish texts at different levels. The findings of the present study have significant implications for the adaptation of language learning materials such as extracurricular reading texts and test materials.

Syntactic complexity in legal translated texts and the use of plain English: a corpus-based study

This study compared the linguistic difficulty of legal translated texts with the syntactic complexity of native English legal writings in order to demonstrate the statistically significant differences between the two big datasets. The study applies features of the syntactic complexity of sentences within legal text translations that translated texts are less complicated than their original counterparts. It provides an example of how easy plain English translation in legal communication might result in understandable target writings. The findings of the legal translation of the people of three regions reveal striking patterns in terms of syntactic complexity and legal communication in plain English, which are consistent with previous research. Complex nominal and hypotactic structures result in a high number of propositions per sentence, placing a high demand on the cognitive processing abilities of those who read and understand the text. The statistics show considerable differences among the three locations and various forms of company law corpora. The study is the first large-scale quantitative analysis of the accessibility of legal jargon compared to other forms of English, emphasizing the efficacy of plain-language initiatives in legal translations.

Marked distinctions in syntactic complexity: A case of second language university learners' and native speakers' syntactic constructions.

Existing research on syntactic complexity tends to examine diversity and complexity embedded in grammatical employments which may well be witnessed in formulations of different syntactic structures. Conceivably, the subject syntactic complexity seems to be exercised mostly by non-native speakers and writers. The present study employs pseudo-longitudinal data: essays written by undergraduate students in different levels collected at the same time. Hence, it aims at investigating the mechanism involved in the L2 production of L2 learners in terms of syntactic complexity by analyzing a corpus of non-native English-speaking learners. The research inquiry is mainly focused on investigation of significant differences in terms of syntactic complexity between writing of Japanese university students and that of native speakers, probing further into the particular dimension and level of difference. The study also traces marked variations in syntactic complexity employed by Japanese university students in different grades. Nagoya Interlanguage Corpus of English (NICE) developed by Sugiura in 2015 was employed to conduct the entire research proceedings. The corpus of the subject study comprises 339 essays written by L2 EFL learners studying in a Japanese university employing a judicious selection of quantitative measures of syntactic complexity. The results exhibited a considerable statistical difference between the writing of Japanese learners and native English writers. The findings of this study provide meaningful pedagogical implications for English teachers and textbook compilers. Japanese university students in higher grades are found to be employing more complicated and diverse syntactic structures. Conforming to the already conducted research studies with almost similar objectives, this study demonstrates the significance of using both general and more particular complexity metrics to assess syntactic development in L2.

Dynamic development of syntactic complexity in second language writing: A longitudinal case study of a young Chinese EFL learner.

The present study analyzes the English diaries written by a young Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) learner over a 1-year period in an attempt to determine the developmental process of Chinese EFL young learners’ written language in terms of syntactic complexity. This study aimed to use a wide range of metrics to explore densely collected data based on Dynamic Systems Theory. The longitudinal study data were analyzed through eight large-grained measures related to sentential, clausal, and phrasal features by using L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer, as well as fine-grained measures related to seven modifiers, an adjective placed before a noun, ordinal numerals are indicated (ADJA), cardinal numeral (CARD), predicative adjective, adverbial adjective (ADJP), adverbs (ADV), prepositional phrases (PREP), subordinate (SUB), and relative clause (REL), through manual annotations. The results show that, first, the developmental process was not linear but spiral in terms of large-grained measures. The sentential level varied, and the development process of the young learner is different from Chinese English learners studying in colleges. Second, the dynamic features of fine-grained measures are also prominent in the seven indicators. ADJA, PREP, and REL showed a steady increase, ADJP showed an obvious decline, while ADV and SUB first increased and then declined. Third, the correlation analysis revealed a competitive interaction within fine-grained measures and between large-grained and fine-grained measures.

Morphosyntactic complexity in Japanese advertising slogans

This study applies mathematical linguistics to explore the morphological richness and syntactic freedom of Japanese advertising slogans and identify associations between the morphosyntactic features and the popularity of slogans. The data were drawn from the Tokyo Copywriters Yearbook, which includes 12 genres of advertising slogans. Mean dependency distance (MDD) and entropy (ENTR) were employed to measure syntactic diversity, and moving-average morphological richness (MAMR), moving-average mean size of paradigm (MAMSP), and mean word length (MWL) to measure lexical diversity. The findings indicate that in terms of syntactic complexity, slogans of the imperative form were the simplest and slogans of the volitional form were the most complex. In information amount, exclamatory slogans had the highest and volitional slogans the lowest. Spearman’s rank correlation test for MMR, MAMSP, MWL, MDD, and ENTR showed that MAMR and MDD reflect the proposed ‘complexity trade-off hypotheses’. Furthermore, the analysis of the Tokyo Copywriters Club (TCC)-Prize-winning slogans from 2018 to 2021 reveals a tendency towards popularity among the Japanese in the past four years, such that the simpler the slogans, the better. We hope that this research will aid copywriters in producing effective advertising slogans.

Effectiveness of AI Editing Software for Corrective Feedback in L2 Writing

This study examined whether AI-based editing software can contribute to the improvement of L2 learners’ writing quality measured by four indicators: syntactic complexity, lexical variety, lexical richness, and readability. A total of 65 college students at a low-intermediate level of fluency participated in this study. One class, consisting of 30 students, was randomly designated as the control group, and another class with 35 students as the experimental group. Free versions of Grammarly, an AI-based written corrective feedback provider, and Quillbot, an AI-based paraphrasing suggestion provider, were used as a treatment for the experimental group. The analysis revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in terms of syntactic complexity, lexical variety, and readability. However, little difference has been detected between the groups in terms of lexical richness. This result suggests potential pedagogical capabilities AI-based editing software can offer L2 writers and teachers.

2015 개정 초등 6학년과 중등 1학년 간 영어 교과서 의사소통 기능의 연계성 분석

This study analyses the communicative functions of listening scripts extracted from the 2015 elementary school English 6 and middle school English 1 textbooks in terms of continuity. Auditory data corpora were drawn from all five elementary school English textbooks and five most widely used middle school English textbooks. Each sentence of listening scripts was manually tagged based on the classification of communication functions presented in the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. The corpora were analyzed using 14 syntactic complexity measures with the L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (Lu, 2010). The findings of this study show that the continuity between the elementary school English 6 and the middle school English 1 textbooks is relatively well-organized. However, concerning the sequence, the elementary school English 6 was found to be more complex than the middle school English 1 in terms of syntactic complexity. It is suggested that future textbook development should correct the reversed complexity in listening scripts found in this study.

Multimodal Composing and Traditional Essays: Linguistic Performance and Learner Perceptions

Over the past decade, digital multimodal composing (DMMC) in the language learning context has received growing attention. DMMC entails teaching writing as the social practice of meaning making using various semiotic tools (Siegal, 2012). Despite its potential benefits as a way to teach a meaning-making process in the current digitalized era, much concern regarding a lack of language focus has been expressed. The current small-scale exploratory study compared Korean EFL learners’ writing for DMMC and traditional essay writing in terms of syntactic complexity and accuracy as well as the learners’ perceptions of the two composing tasks. Using a within group comparisons design, 18 university students in Korea completed both DMMC and traditional writing on the same topic of their choice as a part of their required writing class. The findings revealed that traditional writing elicited syntactically more complex writing than DMMC using two measures (i.e. the number of words per T-unit, the number of clauses per T-unit). However, there was no significant difference in the accurate clause rate between the two conditions. Students had generally positive perceptions of DMMC, particularly regarding its effective role in meaning making. However, mixed perceptions were found in terms of helpfulness in improving writing skills. Pedagogical implications for English for academic purposes (EAP) contexts are discussed.

Effects of task structure on young learners’ writing quality

In the past decade, research has yielded mixed results regarding the relationship between task complexity and writing quality. Some studies have suggested that an increase in task complexity results in the improvement of syntactic complexity, accuracy and fluency. Other studies have demonstrated partial improvement in fluency, accuracy, syntactic complexity, or lexical complexity. This study examines the impact of task structure on writing quality among English-as-a-second-language (ESL) young learners. The analysis is based on 236 ESL fourth-grade pupils’ narrative compositions. Using the Limited Attention Capacity Model and the Cognitive Hypothesis, the analysis revealed that Primary Four pupils wrote significantly longer and syntactically more complex texts in structured tasks, and they scored higher in lexical variety in unstructured tasks. The accuracy of writing did not vary significantly based on task structure. The study provides new empirical evidence for the argument that task structure affects ESL young learners’ writing performance in terms of syntactic complexity, fluency, and lexical variety. The findings contribute new knowledge to the field of second language writing. In particular, how task structures influence writing quality and how such knowledge can inform writing pedagogy and the evaluation of students’ written work.

Investigating Syntactic Complexity in EFL Learners' Writing across Common European Framework of Reference Levels A1, A2, and B1

Abstract The study investigates the linguistic basis of Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels in English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ writing. Specifically, it examines whether CEFR levels can be distinguished with reference to syntactic complexity (SC) and whether the results differ between two groups of EFL learners with different first languages (Sindhi and Finnish). This sheds light on the linguistic comparability of the CEFR levels across L1 groups. Informants were teenagers from Pakistan (N = 868) and Finland (N = 287) who wrote the same argumentative essay that was rated on a CEFR-based scale. The essays were analysed for 28 SC indices with the L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer and Coh-Metrix. Most indices were found to distinguish CEFR levels A1, A2, and B1 in both language groups: the clearest separators were the length of production units, subordination, and phrasal density indices. The learner groups differed most in the length measures and phrasal density when their CEFR level was controlled for. However, some indices remained the same, and the A1 level was more similar than A2 and B2 in terms of SC across the two groups.

Written languaging with indirect feedback in writing revision: is feedback always effective?

Recent studies have shown that languaging contributes to second language skill development. Feedback is often used in combination with languaging as a prompt of verbalization during writing revision, and this combination has shown the effect of increasing the quality of writing. The present study tested whether and how indirect feedback helps learners engage in languaging, and whether the effects continued with the second new writing on the same topic. Forty participants engaged in a three-stage writing task: writing a first draft, revision with languaging with/without feedback on specific grammatical or lexical errors, and writing the second draft. Writing was multidimensionally assessed in terms of syntactic complexity, grammatical accuracy, and fluency. The results showed that the participants focused more on grammar when they were given feedback and succeeded in more error correction than when they did not receive feedback. Learners improved in fluency and slightly in accuracy, but not in complexity, regardless of the existence of indirect feedback. Importantly, written languaging with feedback did not show superiority to written languaging without feedback in skill development. The findings suggest that even metalinguistic correction induced by feedback is not always necessarily effective, but languaging may have a positive effect on overall writing quality.

EFL Writing Development through Repetition of a Literature-Reading-Writing Task

Our study focused on the effects of input frequency through reading-writing connections on students’ emerging accurate use of specific English forms. Taking a dynamic usage based (DUB) perspective, we investigated whether any changes occurs through repeating reading-to-writing tasks over one semester. We also traced writing development of students individually over time from a dynamic systems theory (DST) approach. All four participants in this study were EFL college students enrolled in an English reading and writing course at a Korean university. To repeat the same reading-to-writing tasks, students read an assigned picture book at home in advance. In class, students were asked to write a narrative for 30 minutes. The four students developed their writing skills in terms of syntactic complexity, lexical diversity, cohesion, and fluency as they repeated the same type of writing tasks over one semester. Particularly, task repetition had a marked effect on the fluency of the written texts. Another conclusion was that both high and low performance groups non-linearly developed their writing and showed different developmental trajectories.

Dual Language and English-Only Learners' Expressive and Receptive Language Skills and Exposure to Peers' Language.

This study examined dual language learners' (DLLs n=24) and English-only (EO n=20) children's expressive and receptive language in kindergarten (Mage =5.7years) as well as the relation to peers' language use. Expressive language skills (vocabulary diversity, syntactic complexity) were measured in the fall, winter, and spring (2014-2015year). Receptive language skills (vocabulary, sentence comprehension) were measured in the fall and spring. Findings revealed increases in children's expressive and receptive language, except in terms of syntactic complexity. Moreover, peers' vocabulary diversity was positively associated with children's vocabulary diversity. Peers' syntactic complexity was positively associated with children's syntactic complexity and receptive vocabulary. Findings suggest that peers' language use may influence DLLs' and EO children's language learning.

Syntactic Complexity on Extroverted and Introverted Indonesian Language Learners’ Written Products

The objective of this study was to examine the significance of difference between introverted and extroverted learners in terms of syntactic complexity (Simple Sentences [SS], Compound Sentences [CpdS], Complex Sentences [CpxS], and Compound Complex Sentences [CCS]). The data were collected from written products of 30 introverted and 30 extroverted language learners in the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Medan, Indonesia. SPPS (Version 21) was used to analyze the data. It was found that there was a significant difference between introverted and extroverted learners’ written product in terms of syntactic complexity. The introverted learners wrote more SS than extroverts did. In contrast, extroverts wrote more CpdS and CCS than introverts did in their written products. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the groups in CpxS. To sum up, language learners wrote different kinds of sentences in their written products.

Effects of increasing the degree of reasoning and the number of elements on L2 argumentative writing

The impacts of task characteristics on second language (L2) writing require further exploration. This study examined the effects of increasing task complexity on L2 argumentative writing. Upper-intermediate L2 learners performed two writing tasks with varying degrees of complexity in relation to the number of elements and the degree of reasoning. The learners’ writing was measured in terms of syntactic complexity, accuracy, lexical complexity, organization, content, and overall text quality. Increasing task complexity effected a significant desirable change in one dimension of syntactic complexity (notably the amount of subordination) and one dimension of lexical complexity (notably academic vocabulary use), had a significant adverse effect on accuracy, and led to the enhancement of content, organization, and writing quality. These findings lend support to the Trade-off Hypothesis, the Cognition Hypothesis, and the central tenet of Kellogg’s writing model. Methodological and pedagogical implications of the study are also discussed.

Syntactic complexity in L2 writing: Individual pathways and emerging group trends

The present study aims to contribute to a fuller understanding of how the L2 production of L2 learners varies over time in terms of syntactic complexity by analyzing a substantive number of English L2 writing samples (n = 11) produced by a sizable group of learners (n = 10) over a relatively long period of time (19 months), using a judicious selection of quantitative measures of syntactic complexity. The focus is on synchronic and diachronic variation, both within and across learners. Our analyses show that whereas development over time is relatively regular at the group level, individual developmental paths are characterized by a high degree of variability and often deviate from the mean group trends.

Korean College EFL Learners’ Task Motivation in Written Language Production

<p>The aims of the present study were to explore the effects of two different types of task conditions (topic choice vs. no choice) on the quality of written production in a second language (lexical complexity, syntactic complexity, and cohesion) and to investigate the effects of these two different task conditions on task motivation. This research was conducted by means of a task motivation questionnaire and a collation of the writings of 31 Korean college students learning English as a foreign language. The data was analyzed using Coh-Metrix 3.0. The major findings were as follows: 1) The writings of participants in the topic choice condition were better than those in the no-choice condition in terms of lexical sophistication and temporal cohesion. However, participants’ written production in the no-choice condition was better than that in the topic choice condition in terms of syntactic complexity. 2) The participants’ task motivation levels were higher for the perceived choice domain in the topic choice condition than in the no-choice condition. These findings should help L2 writing instructors, materials developers, and researchers to design L2 writing instruction with a focus on written production specifically for Korean college-level learners.</p>
