Integrating Molecular Motions in Ternary Cocrystals for NIR-II Photothermal Conversion.

Organic photothermal conversion materials hold immense promise for various applications owing to their structural flexibility. Recent research has focused on enhancing near-infrared (NIR) absorption and mitigating radiative transition processes. In this study, we have developed a viable approach to the design of photothermal conversion materials through the construction of ternary organic cocrystals, by introducing a third component as a molecular blocker and motion unit into a binary donor-acceptor system. Superstructural and photophysical properties of the ternary cocrystals were characterized using various spectroscopic techniques. The role of the molecular blocker in radical stabilization and photothermal conversion was demonstrated. Intriguingly, the motions of the entire pyrene molecules in the cocrystal have been observed by the results of variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The excellent performance of the ternary cocrystal as a photothermal material was validated through efficient NIR-II photothermal and solar-driven water evaporation experiments. The efficiency of water evaporation reached 88.7 %, with a corresponding evaporation rate of 1.29 kg m-2 h-1, representing excellent performance among pure organic small molecular photothermal conversion materials. Our research underscores the introduction of molecular blockers and motion units to stabilize radicals and produce outstanding photothermal conversion materials, offering new pathways for developing efficient and stable photothermal conversion materials.

Synthesis, structure, and luminescence properties of a 0D organic-inorganic cadmium iodide: Combined experimental and theoretical approach

Hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide materials with zero-dimensional (0D) structures have emerged as a captivating field of research due to their distinctive electronic properties and remarkable broadband emission characteristics. In this study, we successfully synthesized a novel hybrid cadmium iodide compound, (BZA)2CdI4.H2O (BZA+: benzylammonium), in the form of single crystals employing the solvent-evaporation method. The room temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that (BZA)2CdI4.H2O possesses a typical 0D crystal structure, where (CdI4)2− anions are spatially isolated and surrounded by (BZA)+ cations and H2O molecules. The crystal packing is intricately governed by various non-covalent intermolecular interactions, including π–π stacking interactions, NH…I, NH…O, and OH…I hydrogen bonds, quantified through Hirshfeld surface analysis. Thermal analysis further demonstrated that the removal of water molecules in the crystal lattice yields a dehydrated phase of (BZA)2(CdI4). Upon 330 nm irradiation, the title compound displayed a broad bluish-white light emission, featuring a primary band at 430 nm and a secondary band at 500 nm. Based on photoluminescence spectra measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the dual-band emission is assigned to the emission of (BZA)+ organic cations and to excitons confined in the [CdI4]2– isolated inorganic tetrahedron, respectively. Interestingly, the presence of isolated molecular units in the 0-D structure results in strongly localized charges and bluish-white light emission with Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) colour coordinates (0.23, 0.28). These results confirm the promise of 0D metal-halide hybrids with dual-band emission as luminescent materials for solid-state lighting.

Dehydration kinetics of nanoconfined water in beryl probed by high temperature single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction

Understanding changes in material properties through external stimuli plays a key role in validating the expected performance of materials and engineering material properties in a controlled manner. Here, we introduce a fundamental protocol to deduce dehydration reactions kinetics of water confined in nanopore channels, with the cyclosilicate beryl as the scaffold of interest, using time-resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD), in the temperature interval of 298–1038 K. The crystal structure of beryl determined up to 1038 K, in temperature increment as small as 10 K, indicates the presence of channel ions Na and Fe and a gradual decrease of water upon heating.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a grid-like Fe(ii) spin crossover dimer triggered by a two-photon excitation.

The application of two-photon excitation (TPE) in the study of light-responsive materials holds immense potential due to its deeper penetration and reduced photodamage. Despite these benefits, TPE has been underutilised in the investigation of the photoinduced spin crossover (SCO) phenomenon. Here, we employ TPE to delve into the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a SCO FeII dimer of the form [FeII(HL)2]2(BF4)4·2MeCN (HL = 3,5-bis{6-(2,2'-bipyridyl)}pyrazole). Optical transient absorption (OTA) spectroscopy in solution proves that the same dynamics take place under both one-photon excitation (OPE) and TPE. The results show the emergence of the photoinduced high spin state in less than 2 ps and with a lifetime of 147 ns. Time-resolved photocrystallography (TRXRD) reveals a single molecular reorganisation within the first 500 ps following TPE. Additionally, variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction (VTSCXRD) and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm that the thermal transition is silenced by the solvent. While the results of the OTA and TRXRD utilising TPE are intriguing, the high pump fluencies required to excite enough metal centres to the high spin state may impair its practical application. Nonetheless, this study sheds light on the potential of TPE for the investigation of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of SCO complexes.

(Invited) Dynamics of Fullerenes Visualized with Variable Temperature Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffraction

The dynamics of fullerenes are fundamentally interesting. Variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction is a powerful tool to view the temperature-driven dynamics of fullerene molecules in the crystal lattice because fullerene crystals present fruitful dynamics information in the widely accessible liquid nitrogen cryostats temperature range (90 K - room temperature). Recently, we succeeded in the visualization of the temperature-driven circular movement of Dy2 inside a benzyl-functionalized C80 cage in its solvate crystal.1 The temperature-driven dynamics of typical fullerene/nickel octaethylporphyrin (NiOEP) co-crystals presented the rather static behaviour of porphyrin molecules, and strong libration of the fullerene cages (C60 and C80) in the temperature range of 100-280 K. While the M3N clusters (M3N = Ho2LuN, Lu3N or Sc3N) inside C80 cage show intriguing temperature-driven dynamics with subtle metal atom size/mass effects.2-3 Sc3N@C70 rotation in the co-crystal with NiOEP induced a phase transition which was visualized with variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction.4 In this contribution, the details of the recently observed temperature-dependent dynamics of fullerene molecules in the crystal lattice will be discussed. Coordination Sphere Flexibility Leads to Elastic Deformation in a One-Dimensional Coordination Polymer Crystal

Coordination polymers exhibiting mechanical flexibility including elastic or plastic bending are rare. Here, we report an example of a mechanically flexible one-dimensional coordination polymer that shows elastic bending. Quantitative insights on the inter and intra-chain bonding as well as structural flexibility from a combination of techniques including variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-pressure crystallography (ambient─15 GPa), synchrotron micro-XRD mapping of the bent crystal, and high-resolution synchrotron X-ray charge density analysis show that the helical coordination polymer behaves like a spring when subjected to external stimuli. Changes that occur with the variation of temperature, pressure, or bending, however, result in very different mechanistic changes. The exceptional coordination sphere flexibility rendered by the presence of Jahn–Teller distorted coordination bonds leads to the flexibility of the polymer.

Supramolecular Tuning of Spin Crossover Properties in Isostructural Cocrystal Solvates

In order to improve strategies for the design of spin-crossover materials, it is necessary to develop and understand structure–property relationships, and this is best achieved by obtaining isostructural materials. In this work we synthesized a series of four isostructural cocrystal solvates using the [Fe(3-bpp)2][A]2 complex and the 2,2-dipyridyl disulfide coformer in methanol and ethanol (A = BF4– or PF6–). The spin-crossover properties of the materials were determined by variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction. They show the same SCO behavior but with shifted spin-crossover temperatures, which has been related to the hydrogen bond basicity, pKBHX of the anions, and solvents present. This relationship between hydrogen bond basicity and the spin-crossover transition temperature offers a design strategy for the supramolecular tuning of spin-crossover properties in specific isostructural materials.

A rigid calcium 2-ethylhexylphosphate one-dimensional polymer: synthesis, structure, thermal behaviour and decomposition chemistry.

The reactivity of two different phosphate esters has been explored with calcium ions. The reaction of calcium oxide with a mixture of mono/bis 2-ethylhexyl phosphate and 1,10-phenanthroline leads to the formation of the 1-D polymer [(phen)Ca(ehpH)2]n (1). On the other hand, the reaction of Ca(OAc)2 with trimethyl phosphate in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline however yields needle-shaped colourless crystals of [(phen)Ca(OAc)2]n (2). Compounds 1 and 2 have been characterized by various spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The solid-state structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The arrangement of rigid and flexible parts in 1 makes it an interesting compound to be studied for its thermal behaviour. DSC experiments performed above and below room temperature reveal thermal transitions in both the ranges, where below room temperature transition is prominent. A combination of variable temperature powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments provides further insights into these transitions. Solid-state bulk thermolysis of 1 at 500 °C leads to an amorphous material contaminated with graphitic carbon which upon further heating to 600 °C produces crystalline α-Ca(PO3)2.

Spin-state switching: chemical modulation and the impact of intermolecular interactions in manganese(III) complexes.

A series of mononuclear manganese(III) complexes [Mn(X-sal2-323)](ReO4) (X = 5 Cl, 1; X = 5 Br, 2; X = 3,5 Cl, 3; X = 3,5 Br, 4; and X = 5 NO2, 5), containing hexadentate ligands prepared using the condensation of N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine and 5- or 3,5-substituted salicylaldehyde, has been synthesized. Variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical analyses, and theoretical calculations have been used to explore the role of various ligand substituents in the spin-state switching behavior of the prepared manganese(III) complexes. All five complexes consist of an analogous distorted octahedral monocationic MnN4O2 surrounding offered by the flexible hexadentate ligand and ReO4- as the counter anion. However, a disordered water molecule was detected in complex 4. Complexes 1 (X = 5 Cl) and 5 (X = 5 NO2) show gradual and complete spin-state switching between the high-spin (HS) (S = 2) and the low-spin (LS) (S = 1) state with T1/2 values of 146 and 115 K respectively, while an abrupt and complete transition at 95 K was observed for complex 2 (X = 5 Br). Alternatively, complex 3 (X = 3, 5 Cl) exhibits an incomplete and sharp transition between the HS and LS states at 104 K, while complex 4 (X = 3, 5 Br) (desolvated) remains almost LS up to 300 K and then displays gradual and incomplete SCO at a higher temperature. The nature of the spin-state switch and transition temperature suggest that the structural effect (cooperativity) plays a more significant role in comparison with the electronic effect coming from various substituents (Cl, Br, and NO2), which is further supported by the detailed structural, electrochemical, and theoretical studies.

Variable Temperature Behaviour of the Hybrid Double Perovskite MA2KBiCl6.

Perovskite-related materials show very promising properties in many fields. Pb-free perovskites are particularly interesting, because of the toxicity of Pb. In this study, hybrid double perovskite MA2KBiCl6 (MA = methylammonium cation) was found to have interesting variable temperature behaviours. Both variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction, synchrotron powder diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy were conducted to reveal a rhombohedral to cubic phase transition at around 330 K and an order to disorder transition for inorganic cage below 210 K.

An Efficient Synthesis and Preliminary Investigation of Novel 1,3-Dihydro-2H-benzimidazol-2-one Nitro and Nitramino Derivatives.

The preparation and properties of a series of novel 1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazol-2-one nitro and nitramino derivatives are described. A detailed crystal structure of one of the obtained compounds, 4,5,6-trinitro-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazol-2-one (TriNBO), was characterized using low temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction, namely an orthorhombic yellow prism, space group 'P 2 21 21', experimental crystal density 1.767 g/cm3 (at 173 K). Methyl analog, 5-Me-TriNBO-monoclinic red plates, space group, P 21/c, crystal density 1.82 g/cm3. TriNBO contains one activated nitro group at the fifth position, which was used for the nucleophilic substitution in the aminolysis reactions with three monoalkylamines (R=CH3, C2H5, (CH2)2CH3) and ethanolamine. The 5-R-aminoderivatives were further nitrated with N2O5/ HNO3 and resulted in a new group of appropriate nitramines: 1,3-dihydro-2H-5-R-N(NO2)-4,6-dinitrobenzimidazol-2-ones. Thermal analysis (TGA) of three selected representatives was performed. The new compounds possess a high melting point (200-315 °C) and thermal stability and can find a potential application as new thermostable energetic materials. Some calculated preliminary energetic characteristics show that TriNBO, 5-Me-TriNBO, 5-methylnitramino-1,3-dihydro-2H-4,6-dinitrobenzimidazol-2-one, and 5-nitratoethylnitramino-1,3-dihydro-2H-4,6-dinitrobenzimidazol-2-one possess increased energetic characteristics in comparison with TNT and tetryl. The proposed nitrocompounds may find potential applications as thermostable high-energy materials.

Impact of Counteranion on Reversible Spin-State Switching in a Series of Cobalt(II) Complexes Containing a Redox-Active Ethylenedioxythiophene-Based Terpyridine Ligand.

The self-assembly of a redox-active ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)-terpyridine-based tridentate ligand and cobalt(II) unit with different counteranions has led to a series of new cobalt(II) complexes [Co(L)2](X)2 (X = BF4 (1), ClO4 (2), and BPh4 (3)) (L = 4'-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine). The impact of various counteranions on stabilization and spin-state switching of the cobalt(II) center was explored through detailed magneto-structural investigation using variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical studies. All three complexes 1-3 consisted of an isostructural dicationic distorted octahedral CoN6 coordination environment offered by the two L ligands in a bis-meridional fashion and BF4-, ClO4-, and BPh4- as a counteranion, respectively. Complex 2 with ClO4- counteranion showed a reversible, gradual, and nearly complete spin-state switching between low-spin (LS) (S = 1/2) and high-spin (HS) (S = 3/2) states, while an incomplete spin-state switching behavior was observed for complexes 1 (BF4-) and 3 (BPh4-) in the measured temperature range of 350-2 K. The non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the spin-state in 1-3. Additionally, complexes 1-3 also exhibited interesting redox-stimuli-based reversible paramagnetic HS cobalt(II) (S = 3/2) to diamagnetic LS cobalt(III) (S = 0) conversion, offering an alternate way to switch the magnetic properties.

CaAl2Si2O8 polymorphs: Sensitive geothermometers and geospeedometers

Plagioclase is the major rock-forming mineral constituting the Earth’s crust, whereas anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) is a common minerals in lunar highlands crust, meteorites, possibly in some comets and on Mercury. Besides anorthite, two high-temperature polymorphs of CaAl2Si2O8 are known: dmisteinbergite and svyatoslavite, which are found in burnt coal dumps, meteorites and pseudotachylytes. Here we present the results of detailed studies (quenching experiments, elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy and in situ high temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction (up to 1000 °C)) on naturally co-occurring CaAl2Si2O8 polymorphs (anorthite, dmisteinbergite and svyatoslavite) from a burnt coal dump in Kopeisk, Russia. New polymorphs were found in all natural samples and obtained upon heating of dmisteinbergite (unquenchable β-dmisteinbergite and quenchable γ-dmisteinbergite). It was shown that Ca coordination differs significantly in CaAl2Si2O8 polymorphs, resulting in a different capacity to host Ba and possibly other large ion lithophile elements. Combining our data on natural samples with the previously published data on natural and synthetic compounds, we propose a new scheme of CaAl2Si2O8 polymorphs stability. Our results indicate that CaAl2Si2O8 polymorphs could be used for temperature estimations for both Earth and planetary sciences.

Molecular motions of a tetraphenylethylene-derived AIEgen directly monitored through in situ variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction

The isotropic displacement parameters of each phenyl ring confirm the inequivalent vibrations of a crystalline tetraphenylethylene-derived AIEgen.

Impact of counter anions on spin-state switching of manganese(III) complexes containing an azobenzene ligand.

Four mononuclear manganese(III) complexes coordinated with photo-active hexadentate azobenzene ligands, [Mn(5azo-sal2-323)](X) (X = Cl, 1; X = BF4, 2; X = ClO4, 3; X = PF6, 4), were prepared. The impact of various counter anions on the stabilization and switching of the spin state of the manganese(III) center was explored through detailed magneto-structural investigation using variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, and spectroelectrochemical studies, along with theoretical calculations. All four complexes consisted of an isostructural monocationic distorted octahedral MnN4O2 coordination environment offered by the hexadentate ligand and Cl-, BF4-, ClO4-, and PF6- as counter anions respectively. Complex 1 with a spherical Cl- counter anion showed a reversible and gradual spin-state switching between low-spin (LS) (S = 1) and high-spin (HS) (S = 2) states above 400 K, where non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the LS state. While, irrespective of the shape of the counter anion, complexes 2-4 remained in the HS state throughout the measured temperature range of 300-2 K, where strong π-π interaction between the azobenzene motifs among cationic units played a substantial role in stabilizing the HS state. Furthermore, magnetic data analyses revealed significantly large zero-field splitting in the S = 1 state for 1 (D = 19.4 cm-1, E/D = 0.008) in comparison with that in the S = 2 state for 2-4 (D = 3.99-4.97 cm-1, E/D = 0.002-0.195). Spectroelectrochemical investigations revealed the quasi-reversible reduction and oxidation of the manganese(III) center to manganese(II) and manganese(IV), respectively. A detailed theoretical calculation at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory was carried out to better understand the magneto-structural correlation.

Co-crystallisation as a modular approach to the discovery of spin-crossover materials.

Herein we present co-crystallisation as a strategy for materials discovery in the field of switchable spin crossover (SCO) systems. Using [Fe(3-bpp)2]·2A (where 3-bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine, A = BF4−/PF6−) as a starting point, a total of 11 new cocrystals have been synthesised with five different dipyridyl coformers. Eight of these systems show spin crossover behaviour, and all show dramatically different switching properties from the parent complex. The cocrystals have been studied by variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction and SQUID magnetometry to develop structure–property relationships. The supramolecular architecture of the cocrystals depends on the properties of the coformer. With linear, rigid coformer molecules leading to 1D supramolecular hydrogen-bonded chains, while flexible coformers form 2D sheets and bent coformers yield 3D network structures. The SCO behaviour of the cocrystals can be modified through changing the coformer and thus co-crystallisation presents a rapid, facile and highly modular tool for the discovery of new switchable materials. The wider applicability of this strategy to the design of hybrid multifunctional materials is also discussed.

A nickel(II) hydrazinium complex showing reversible phase transition, dielectric anomaly and thermochromism

Thermochromism in copper complexes is known, but nickel thermochromic complex materials are less reported. Herein, we synthesized a nickel metal complex [(Me3NNH2)2NiCl4] (1) based on 1,1,1-trimethylhydrazinium iodide and nickel chloride, which exhibited excellent switching properties in terms of dielectric and phase change and thermochromic properties from yellow to blue. Compound 1 was subjected to the variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction, and it was found that the crystal space group did not change after the temperature exceeded the phase transition point, so the thermochromism may be caused by the structural phase transition of the compound.

Structure and properties of Cs7(H4PO4)(H2PO4)8: A new superprotonic solid acid featuring the unusual polycation (H4PO4)+

We report the discovery of a new superprotonic compound, Cs7(H4PO4)(H2PO4)8, or CPP, which forms at elevated temperatures from reaction of CsH2PO4 and CsH5(PO4)2. The structure, solved using high temperature single crystal x-ray diffraction and confirmed by high temperature 31P NMR spectroscopy, crystallizes in space group Pmn and has lattice constant 20.1994(9) Å at 130 °C. The unit cell resembles a 4  4  4 superstructure of superprotonic CsH2PO4, but features an extraordinary chemical moiety, rotationally disordered H4PO4+ cations, which periodically occupy one of every eight cation sites. The influence of this remarkable cation on the structure, thermodynamics, and proton transport properties of the CPP phase is discussed. Notably, CPP forms at a temperature of 90 C, much lower than the superprotonic transition temperature of 228 C of CsH2PO4, and the compound does not appear to have an ordered, low temperature form. Under nominally dry conditions the material is stable against dehydration to ~ 151 C, resulting in a particularly wide region of stability of a superprotonic material in the absence of active humidification. The conductivity of Cs7(H4PO4)(H2PO4)8 is moderate, 5.8  10-4 S cm-1 at 140 C, but appears nevertheless facilitated by polyanion (H2PO4-) group reorientation. Figure 1

New Spin-Crossover Compounds Containing the [Ni(mnt)] Anion (mnt = Maleonitriledithiolate)

Two novel salts containing the anion [Ni(mnt)2]− (mnt = maleonitriledithiolate) have been synthesized. The counter-ions, [Fe(II)(L1 or L2)2], are cationic complexes where L1 and L2 are methylated derivatives of 2,6-bis(pyazolyl)pyridine or pyrazine, which are similar to ligands found in a series of spin-crossover (SCO) complexes. Both salts are characterized by variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction and bulk magnetization measurements. Compound 1, [Fe(II)(L1)2][Ni(mnt)2]2 displays an incomplete and gradual SCO up to 300 K, followed by a more rapid increase in the high-spin fraction between 300 and 350 K. Compound 2, [Fe(II)(L2)2][Ni(mnt)2]2.MeNO2, shows a gradual, but more complete SCO response centered at 250 K. For compound 2, the SCO is confirmed by variable temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy. In both cases, the anionic moieties are isolated from each other and so no electrical conductivity is observed.

Exceptionally high temperature spin crossover in amide-functionalised 2,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine iron(ii) complex revealed by variable temperature Raman spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction.

The synthesis of a novel amide-functionalised 2,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine-4-carboxamide ligand (bppCONH2) is described. The complex salts [Fe(bppCONH2)2](BF4)2 and [Fe(bppCONH2)2](ClO4)2 were synthesised and characterised by SQUID magnetometry, differential scanning calorimetry, variable temperature Raman spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. DSC measurements of [Fe(bppCONH2)2](BF4)2 indicate a spin-crossover (SCO) transition with T↑ at 481 K and T↓ at 461 K, showing a 20 K hysteresis. DSC for the perchlorate salt shows an SCO transition with T↑ at 459 K and T↓ at 445 K with a 14 K hysteresis. For the BF4- salt analysis of low and high-spin state crystal structures at 101, 290 and 500 K, suggest stabilisation of the low spin state due to the formation of 1D hydrogen-bonded cationic chains. Variable temperature Raman studies of the BF4 salt support the presence of a high temperature SCO. It is speculated that the presence of hysteresis may be attributed to differences in the inter-molecular hydrogen bonding in the low spin and high spin states.
