Television Journalism on the Covid 19 Disaster in Indonesia: Conditions, Perceptions and Production Process

COVID-19 (Coronavirus Diseases 2019) is a group of viruses from the subfamily Orthocronavirinae in the Coronaviridae family and the order Nidovirales. In Indonesia, dozens of journalists and television editors were exposed to Covid-19, people were stressed, and some even died as a result. The Covid-19 pandemic also caused an increase in people's information needs at that time. This study aims to analyze the conditions, perceptions, and production processes of television journalism during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, especially on iNews TV, and Metro TV. This research uses an interpretive/subjective paradigm with a constructive approach. This research uses a qualitative case study research methodology. The conclusion of this study is that the condition of Television Journalism during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Indonesia experienced disruption and change. The condition of the television industry experienced a great and deadly disruption. The production process pattern has not changed, but the production process has experienced a very significant change. In the midst of the pros and cons of Covid-19 information, the perception of journalists and television editors remains on data findings in the field that are verified by valid and reliable sources. The positive impact of the Covid-19 pandemic is accelerating the process of convergence of information and communication technology for journalists and television editors. Data Perception and Information Disorder in the Italian Context During the Pandemic

This paper aims to learn how Italian audiences received and perceived data-driven television news during the Covid-19 pandemic. During this time, the logic and practices of creating and consuming television journalism were disrupted by the pandemic emergency. The paper presents the results of research carried out as part of a wider project titled “The Social Effects of Fake News” which was conducted from 2018 to 2022 within the CoRiS department of Sapienza University of Rome. The research project was reshaped in 2020, to understand the effects of what has been called “information disorder” in the areas of health, medicine, and science at a time when, together with the pandemic, an “infodemic” also emerged.1 We use Wardle and Derakhshan’s notion of “information disorder” as presented in their Council of Europe report.2 The results of the survey research we conducted show a surprising paradox. We found an interesting pattern of receiving and using information content based on data, in which users trust those who produce and validate certain data and at the same time do not believe that same data. This pattern of use indicates a particular approach to dealing with news among the Italian public. We have labelled it “know-it-all.” This article aims to deepen the understanding of this paradox of trust in experts but not in the data they deliver and how journalistic practice should deal with this conundrum.

Production of cultural and educational programs and cultural industries: on the issue of approaches to television analysis

INTRODUCTION. Television activity is devalued due to the loss of its exclusivity in the creation of video content and dissemination of video information. However, television has creative and technical resources, professionals, a school for producing programs aimed not only at supporting the consumer society and political manipulations, but also at developing fundamental meanings and strengthening values – culture, memory, national heritage. The gap that has occurred between the perception of television and its advantages and experience in creating content is a problem affecting the development of the media industry and television journalism. At the same time, the production of television special projects based on cultural events is related to the direction of cultural industries that is relevant for Russia, which allows us to rethink the meaning of television. The purpose of the study is to compare the creative characteristics of special TV projects with the properties of cultural industries and record the identified correspondences.MATERIALS AND METHODS. The empirical basis of the study is special projects of the regional TV channel “Saint Petersburg”, which are representations of cultural events based on live broadcast technology and using expressive means of television. The study used the case study method, as well as a comparative analysis of approaches to creating television projects and criteria of cultural industries.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. A comparison of modern special television projects with the theory of creative industries revealed similarities in such positions as: a) high risks; b) the opposition of creativity and commerce; c) high production costs and low distribution costs; d) attitude to semipublic goods, etc.CONCLUSION. The models of such television projects correspond to the characteristics of cultural industries, which develops a theoretical view of television and actualizes its possibilities in the context of media transformation.

Uma abordagem discursiva das estratégias de legitimação do telejornalismo

This study discusses the processes of legitimization of Brazilian television journalism based on the identification and analysis of discursive strategies used by Jornal Nacional, broadcast by Rede Globo. Aiming to investigate how the events reported by the news affect the discursive legitimation strategies developed in the coverage, three journalistic events were selected for analysis: the dam failure in Brumadinho; the increase in fires in the Amazon, and the COVID-19 pandemic. This investigation has the analysis of discourse at three levels – situational, discursive, and semiolinguistic – proposed by Charaudeau as its theoretical-methodological basis. The main identified discursive legitimation strategies refer to self-referentiality, appropriation of amateur content, instantaneity, and didacticity, the operationalization of which is influenced by the complexity of the situational level of each event, understood as a space of coercion.

The Meaning of Media Independence by Journalists in the 2024 Election

The 2024 Presidential Election is a political event that the public has been waiting for. At that time, the public can exercise their political rights to elect government leaders for the next five years. Seeing such great public attention, the mass media will place the 2024 General Election and Presidential Election as one of the main portions of the news. However, like the 2014 and 2019 Presidential Elections and Elections, it is suspected that it will be difficult for the mass media to stand in a neutral position. Mass media, especially television stations, are owned by entrepreneurs who are affiliated with political parties and support the 2024 presidential and vice presidential candidates.This research aims to explain the meaning of television journalists regarding media independence ahead of the 2024 general election and presidential election. This research uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological research method to understand the construction meaning of journalists. The object of this research is the meaning of television journalists regarding media independence ahead of the 2024 general election and presidential election. The research subjects were television journalists from two media groups, MNC Group and Media Group, who were selected purposively. The research data was analyzed using media political economy theory. Findings from the research show differences in the subjective meaning of media independence among television journalists. Although they agree on the urgency of media independence as a guardian of press freedom, differences of opinion arise especially regarding the role of media owners in editorial policy. Some journalists consider the intervention of media owners to be acceptable, while others consider it a violation of the journalistic code of ethics. Different views are also seen in terms of implementing media independence. Some see media independence as the freedom for the media to support political parties or presidential candidates that are in line with the editorial views. On the other hand, there are journalists who believe that media independence should be realized through a neutral and unbiased attitude

Television Journalism in Pakistan. Historical Evolution, Challenges, and Prospects

This essay explores the evolution, challenges, and prospects of television journalism in Pakistan, tracing its origins from the first television witnessed in 1955 to the dynamic and competitive landscape of today. The historical context highlights the establishment of the Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) in 1964 and the significant shift brought about by the liberalization of the media sector in 2002. This liberalization ended the state monopoly and led to the emergence of numerous private channels, which introduced innovative and diverse programing. The study examines the distribution and accessibility of television content, noting the dominance of terrestrial broadcasting by national channels such as PTV Home, PTV News, and ATV. Further, the paper analyzes the role of private channels in shaping public discourse vis-à-vis public opinion formation. It discusses the challenges posed by sensationalism and the prioritization of commercial interests over journalistic integrity and suggests prospects in the current media-saturated society.

Strategy for Improving Competency and Presenting Quality Development News on Indonesian Television Media

Objective: This research aims to investigate the strategies used by media organizations to improve the competence of journalists in the digital era and improve the quality of news delivery and development content. Method: This research uses mixed methods with a sequential strategy explanation approach. The research population consists of television journalists with news segmentation. The research sample consisted of 60 journalists representing national television media. Quantitative data analysis is used in this research using a regression model with SPSS (Statistic Package for the Social Sciences). Results and conclusion: The research results show that (1) organizational support from dependent media turns out to provide professional awards needed by journalists as a form of appreciation; (2) the function of controlling news and mediating problems between journalists and stakeholders also receives high attention from the media crew. Journalists need more independent media organizations to maintain security and support the implementation of the journalist profession; (2) professionally, journalists always do research before reporting, while journalists' communication competence is still weak in articulating and conveying information. Specific competencies for the media industry, journalists are considered to have mastered their profession, especially in presenting news, and writing scientific papers in the field of education, and journalists are adept at writing about history with social orientation competencies; (3) Regarding the quality of development messages, journalists always pay attention to the appropriateness of the type of information journalists convey development policy information to maintain the quality of development messages so that they remain meaningful, journalists try to adapt themselves to their duties to ensure news is more meaningful and factual; (3) news diversity is a concern in presenting news in maintaining the quality of the news, explaining the chronology, paying attention to the relevance of the truth of the information, news written in language that is easy to understand, according to the facts, in favor of the public interest.

Implications for Hybrid Newswork from the Work-from-Home Activities of Local US Television Journalists During COVID

ABSTRACT In response to the COVID-19 crisis, many local television (TV) newsrooms decided to have employees work from home (WFH) or from the field rather than from the newsroom, creating a kind of hybrid work characterized by a mix of work locations. From a review of research on telework and WFH, we identified possible impacts of WFH on work and on workers, with a particular focus on news work and news workers. Data on the impacts of hybrid work are drawn from interviews with local television news directors and journalists in the United States and observations of WFH. We found that through the creative application of technology, WFH news workers could successfully create a newscast, albeit with some concerns about story quality. However, WFH did not seem to satisfy workers’ needs for socialization or learning individually or as a group and created some problems coordinating work. Lifted restrictions on gatherings have mitigated some of the experienced problems, but we expect to see continued challenges to news workers’ informal learning in hybrid work settings.

The Mechanism of Newsroom and TV Journalist Work Routines during the COVID-19 Pandemic

A disease outbreak known as COVID-19 (Corona Virus Diseases 2019) is currently affecting virtually every part of the planet. The COVID-19 outbreak is a catastrophe that endangers and disrupts life, causes fatalities, traumatizes victims, and engenders a climate of threat and fear. The COVID-19 pandemic tragedy not only affected the number of sick and deceased individuals but also altered work schedules in the neighborhood. Additionally, COVID-19 has brought about changes in journalism, particularly in television journalism. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the mechanism governing the operational procedures of newsroom and television journalism during the COVID-19 pandemic. Expectancy Violation Theory and Judee K. Burgoon’s Interaction Adaptation Theory were both used in this study. This research approach employed a constructive subjective paradigm and utilized a qualitative case study methodology. The subjects of this study were the journalists and editors of iNews TV and Metro TV. The study’s finding show that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted how journalists work both in the workplace and in the field, causing disruption and changes to their routines. Nevertheless, the pandemic has also prompted an acceleration of the process of adapting how journalistic tasks are carried out, both in the newsroom and on the ground. Despite the acceleration, the COVID-19 epidemic has expedited the process of adaptation and adjustment. Finally, the transformation has resulted in new business strategies in the television industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Television Journalism: Information Technologies during Distance Education

<p><strong><em>The purpose of the article</em></strong><em> is to analyze new forms and methods of distance education for television journalism students in a higher education institution during the Covid-19 pandemic and the use of modern digital technologies for the production of audiovisual content during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia.</em><em></em></p><p><strong><em>Research methodology. </em></strong><em>A set of methods was used in the course of the research. The description of distance learning technologies is based on the analysis, synthesis and systematization of the material; the method of comparison has become the key in the study of modern mobile applications as the main tools in the acquisition of practical skills and abilities by prospective television journalists.</em></p><p><strong><em>Results.</em></strong><em> The formation of new approaches to online teaching of practical television journalism courses is an urgent need nowadays. The systematization of the research results shows that distance education in times of emergency in Ukraine has become one of the most effective learning technologies, and it is developing quite rapidly due to advances in information technology and computer hardware. Today, the Moodle e-learning system is a powerful platform for mastering a number of practice-oriented courses. At the same time, new tools and instruments are emerging to help develop practical skills in the chosen specialty. Thanks to a number of mobile applications with various editors, prospective TV professionals can use in practice their library and a fairly wide range of both traditional and more complex functionality: Emotion Sense Technology (Magisto), 4D special effects (Likee), live broadcasts, filming and simultaneous publication of audiovisual content on the web, etc.</em></p><p><strong><em>Novelty. </em></strong><em>Analyzing the best practices of teaching professional disciplines in television journalism in a distance format and finding new forms and methods for mastering these practical courses is the way to provide quality educational services and the key to successful graduate fulfillment in the media industry.</em><em></em></p><p><strong><em>Practical significance. </em></strong><em>The use of modern technologies and mobile applications in distance education (along with available educational and methodological materials) will help students acquire the set of practical skills necessary for further independent work, despite the challenges of today.</em><em></em></p><p><strong><em>Key words: </em></strong><em>television journalism, distance learning, digital technologies, mobile applications, media content production, distance media education.</em></p>

TRANSFORMATION OF MEDIA JOURNALISM DURING COVID 19 IN INDONESIA

ABSTRACT
 During the COVID-19 pandemic, many media outlets have faced disruption. These disruptions are not only related to health but also to public life and the media industry as a whole. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people made the media the main source of information. The purpose of this research is to find out the transformation of media journalism during COVID-19 in Indonesia. This research uses social information processing theory, which describes how a person develops computer-mediated interpersonal and group communication (online) without non-verbal cues, as well as making it easier and more convenient. The research method uses qualitative methodology with a case study approach. In the atmosphere of the COVID-19 pandemic, where people are traumatized by the rapid and ubiquitous transmission of COVID-19 and social restrictions, communication using computers and smartphones mediated online is one of the right solutions. The conclusion of this research is that the production process of television journalism has changed.

FEATURES OF THE LOVE OF TREES AND LAND PROGRAM OF CAN THO RADIO-TELEVISION STATION

<p><em>The Love</em><em> of Trees and Land </em>program<em> (</em><a href="https://canthotv.vn/">https://canthotv.vn</a>) is a television program about the agriculture of Can Tho Radio-Television Station, Can Tho City, in the Mekong Delta region, South of Vietnam. Researching the characteristics or features of this program will contribute to clearly stating the content and messages through each program, adding specific information about city agriculture in which the program uses language, form of transmission, and content of messages to the people. At the same time, it would present the characteristics, content, and form of this journalism genre, taking advantage of the strengths of television journalism. Through the statistical classification method, it is necessary to collect and classify information, data, images, etc. in the program to serve the deployment and explanation of scientific arguments through each category with 39 episodes included in the program from content to form elements namely, information, data, images, language from the hosts and from comments. This television program has brought the audience knowledge, experience, and information about agricultural activities in the region such as <em>agricultural news, farmers needing to know, advanced farmers, behind the rice crop, information about climate change, science, and technology in production, farmers getting rich, new rural areas,</em> etc. Form the findings of the research, it was seen that each part brings the audience attractive, useful and practical content, helping the audience better understand current agricultural issues, opportunities, and challenges, knowledge of the agricultural industry in the context of climate change and international integration, clean, efficient and sustainable agricultural models, stories of typical farmers with good production, quality agricultural products in the region and volunteer activities, building local infrastructure, cleaning up the environment, and policies to support farmers in production, which are just in <em>The</em> <em>Love of</em> <em>Trees and Land </em>program<em>. </em></p><p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/soc/0509/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

Инновационный дискурс развития телеиндустрии: технологии виртуальной и дополненной реальности

At the presentstage of digital transformation of society, more and more industries and enterprises are showing interest in virtual and augmented reality technologies (VR and AR), which, along with artificial intelligence, Big Data, and cloud technologies, are a promising direction for innovative development of all spheres of the economy. Virtual and augmented reality technologies are widely used in the creative industries. The purpose of the study is aimed at identifying and systematizing the functionality of VR and AR technologies for the digital television industry and its main actors: television companies, journalists and viewers. The article analyzes and summarizes the results of foreign and domestic research in the field of implementation and development of VR and AR technologies, characterizes the typological features of immersive technologies, examines the formats of immersive content, updates the requirements for the production of VR projects, identifies and summarizes the main problems and risks associated with the use of these technologies. Based on the research conducted, the author formulated recommendations for improving the practice of implementing and developing VR and AR technology in the digital television industry. The novelty of the research lies in the identification and systematization of the functionality of VR and AR tech-nologies for the creative sector of the economy - the television industry. The article concludes that the functionality of VR and AR technologies has a significant impact on the digital transformation of the television industry, enriches it with innovative technologies, opens up new prospects and opportunities for television and journalists, radically changes the future of television companies, making their future more interesting and accessible for viewers, meet their needs and modern in-novative trends of technological progress. The article may be useful to students, graduate students and doctoral students involved in the digital development of creative industries, as well as media researchers and media experts.

JOURNALISTS OR INFLUENCERS? THE APPROPRIATION OF DIGITAL INFLUENCERS PRACTICES AS A TOOL OF JOURNALISTIC VALUE

This article answers two main questions: What are the similarities and differences between journalists' online practices and that of digital influencers’? How have social media and the intimate perspective shortened the distances between journalists and their audience? To understand this scenario, a trio of Brazilian television journalists was investigated to comprehend their digital presence. The authors elaborated an exploratory methodology for qualitative analysis of Instagram publications. Based on elements that characterize the digital influencers and journalistic practices, a score was also created to understand the potentials of their discourse, performances and content strategies online.

STRATEGI PROGRAMMING INEWS DALAM MEMPERTAHANKAN PROGRAM SIARAN BERITA MENJELANG ASO 2022

This research concentrates on the realm of television studies as an institution, to find out how the strategy of the iNews Siang news program is in maintaining news broadcast programs ahead of ASO 2022. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research study is the iNEWS Afternoon program ahead of the Migration policy of Analog TV broadcasts to Digital TV broadcasts or Analog Switch Off (ASO). The problems in this study are dissected by analyzing how the strategy of the iNews Siang news program is in maintaining the news broadcast program ahead of ASO 2022, data collection techniques are applied to support information by conducting observations, interviews, and documents. The purpose of this research is to find out the strategy for the INEWS Siang news program in maintaining the news broadcast program ahead of ASO 2022, through the pre-production, production and postproduction stages observed as one unit in a series of program strategies. Participatory observation methods, interviews and literature on the news department, Morrisan's program strategy theory were built as a framework for the approach. The results obtained are iNews TV station programming strategy, especially in the iNews Afternoon Towards ASO 2022 program in broadcasting television broadcast programs to digital so that they can reach all audiences throughout Indonesia. Therefore, there are programs broadcast by the iNews Siang program in preparation for or ahead of ASO 2022. ASO stands for Analog Switch Off. The policy of discontinuing Analog TV broadcasts to be subsequently transferred to digital TV broadcasts is known as Analog Switch Off (ASO).

“It’s Not as Neat Television Like Before The Epidemic”: Analysing the Visuality of Television Journalism During the Covid-19 Crisis

ABSTRACTThe study explores the (re)negotiated visuality of television journalism during the first wave of the epidemic in Slovenia and on this basis examines the visibility of the COVID-19 crisis. Institutionalised procedures and relations of production together with the conventional visual-aural news form are analysed by assessing journalism’s (cl)aims of bringing relevant events and disputes to public attention, uncovering hidden social realities, and enabling people to engage in public life. By combining qualitative interviews with journalists and editors of public television and the leading commercial broadcaster with ethnographic content analysis of the lead news packages, the study reveals “not as neat television like before the epidemic”, albeit a detailed analysis of the mechanisms for ensuring veracity in the newscasts showed “business as usual” in television journalism. Although the two newsrooms (cl)aimed to be performing in line with the journalism’s normative foundations, chiefly monitoring disputes, deviances and changes, making them visible for people in their public engagements and encounters with power, the study points to the emergence of “kaleidoscopic vision”. Namely, television journalism provided a shifted, fractured and scrambled vision of the COVID-19 crisis defined by competing, conflicting and dysfunctional narratives articulated in the contradictory (dis)connect within the journalism–power–citizenry nexus.

Primetime Nationalism: Analysing Monologues on India’s Republic TV and Times Now During Indo-China Border Conflict

ABSTRACT Several studies exploring the sociology of news have identified and established a range of factors that influence journalism and shape media narratives. However, little has been known regarding the narrative construction in the English language broadcast media in India. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between (re)emerging right-wing nationalism and English language television journalism in India. A qualitative thematic discourse analysis was conducted on the monologues on Republic TV and Times Now’s primetime debates during the India–China border conflict, 2020. The study reports a major shift in the nature of TV journalism in India: far from being passive observers of right-wing nationalist ideology in the 1990s, TV journalists in contemporary India are acting as active participants in propagating them. The study complements existing works on sociology of news by demonstrating how journalism is shaped by dominant political sentiments.

Ethical Guidelines and Practices for Pakistani Television Journalists Reporting on Domestic Violence

ABSTRACT This project investigates the ethical frameworks in place for Pakistani television news journalists reporting cases of domestic violence. It also examines the provision and structure of training for Pakistani media professionals to support accurate and balanced reporting of such violence. The research comprised in-depth semi-structured interviews with a small group of television journalists. The findings reveal that there was no formalized code of ethics guiding how journalists represent incidents of this crime, its victims, or perpetrators. Moreover, it was revealed that due to a paucity of formal professional development opportunities, journalists negotiate the challenges of reporting domestic violence on-the-job, resulting in instances of irresponsible reporting practices.
