Patchwork structure of continental lithosphere captured in 3D body wave images of its anisotropic fabrics

This paper presents an overview of research conducted for more than five decades around Vladislav Babuška and collaborators on large-scale seismic anisotropy in tectonically different regions of continental lithosphere in Europe. A wide range of independent data sets and methods are covered. It also briefly touches laboratory measurements of velocity anisotropy on rock samples from the crust and the upper mantle, and emphasizes the importance of considering anisotropy in studies of the Earth structure. The anisotropy is responsible for even larger velocity variations than those due to composition of the most abundant upper mantle rocks (peridotites).The large-scale in-situ measurements of the upper mantle anisotropy capture fabrics of the mantle lithosphere, and enables mapping lateral changes in its structure. The joint inversion/interpretation of the teleseismic body-wave anisotropic parameters, such as variations of directional terms of relative travel time residuals of P waves, shear-wave splitting or the coupled anisotropic-isotropic teleseismic P-wave tomography, image the continental lithosphere as a mosaic of anisotropic domains. Each of the domains has its own thickness and fossil fabric characterized by tilted symmetry axes. We map boundaries of the domains in dependence on the fabric changes. The boundaries can be either narrow and steep or broader and inclined, with an offset relative to boundaries of the related crustal bocks, which can reach several tens of kilometres. This overview presents the European lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) and shows examples of anisotropic fabrics of the mantle lithosphere domains and their boundaries in different parts of the European plate.

Large-volume and swift magmatic response to Late Cenozoic segmentation of the subducted Neotethyan oceanic slab: evidence from the Galatian Volcanic Province, northwestern Turkey

ABSTRACT The Miocene Galatian Volcanic Province (GVP) is one of the largest volcanic provinces in central-western Anatolia, with an extent of ~ 8,900 km2. The volcanic activity is extended from 22.5 to 7.5 Ma. The volcanic compositions straddle the alkaline-subalkaline fields, from basic to acid compositions and mostly transitional to sodic affinity. Major oxides show good correlation with SiO2 indicating prolonged effects of fractional crystallization. Primitive mantle-normalized multi-element patterns indicate overall similarities among the different samples of the three geographic sectors, sharing strong negative anomalies in Nb–Ta–Ti, strong positive peaks at Cs and K, coupled with a common, albeit not always present, positive anomaly at Pb. Mineral-melt geothermobarometric estimates indicates ~1070–1235°C and ~7–19 kbar for melting conditions of basaltic compositions and ~1000–1150°C and ~3–12 kbar for andesitic-dacitic rocks. The absence of correlation between radiogenic isotopes and SiO2 and MgO is here interpreted as consequence of assimilation-fractional-crystalization processes involving lower continental crust as contaminant. The GVP parental magmas are generated from ~2% to 10% partial melting of a lherzolitic mantle with high spinel/garnet ratio based on intra-REE fractionation constraints. The subduction-related metasomatism inferred for the GVP mantle sources based on their chemistry is interpreted to be linked to the northward subduction of the northern branch of the Neo-Tethys slab. Successive slab retreat resulted in extension for the critical stress distribution through the Cyprus slab, favouring magma propagation for the GVP volcanic region. The eventual break-off of the slab after the continent-continent collision of Arabian and Eurasian plates could have caused a toroidal mantle flow, favouring the widely distributed 15–16 Ma alkaline magmatism in the eastern GVP, associated with passive hot asthenospheric upwelling imaged by teleseismic P-wave tomography.

Seismic imaging of the Northern Andean subduction zone from teleseismic tomography: a torn and fragmented Nazca slab

SUMMARY The Nazca-South America subduction zone in Ecuador is characterized by a complicated along-strike geometry as the slab transitions from flat slab subduction in the south, with the Peruvian flat slab, to what has been characterized as ‘normal’ dipping subduction beneath central Ecuador. Plate convergence additionally changes south to north as the trench takes on a convex shape. Highly heterogeneous bathymetry at the trench, including the aseismic oceanic Carnegie Ridge (CR), and sparse intermediate-depth seismicity has led many to speculate about the behaviour of the downgoing plate at depth. In this study, we present a finite-frequency teleseismic P-wave tomography model of the northern Andes beneath Ecuador and Colombia from 90 to 1200 km depth. Our model builds on prior tomography models in South America by adding relative traveltime residuals recorded at stations in Ecuador. The complete data set is comprised of 114 096 relative traveltime residuals from 1133 stations across South America, with the added data serving to refine the morphology of the Nazca slab in the mantle beneath the northern Andes. Our tomography model shows a Nazca slab with a fragmented along-strike geometry and the first teleseismic images of several proposed slab tears in this region. At the northern edge of the Peruvian flat slab in southern Ecuador, we image a shallow tear at 95–200 km depth that appears to connect mantle flow from beneath the flat slab to the Ecuadorian Arc. Beneath central Ecuador at the latitudes of the CR, the Nazca slab is continuous into the lower mantle. Beneath southern Colombia, the Malpelo Tear breaks the Nazca slab below ∼200 km depth.

Upper Mantle Velocity Structure Beneath the Yarlung–Tsangpo Suture Revealed by Teleseismic P-Wave Tomography

We applied teleseismic tomography to investigate the 3D P-wave velocity (Vp) structure of the crust and upper mantle at depths of 50–400 km beneath the Yarlung–Tsangpo suture (YTS), by using 6164 P-wave relative travel-time residuals collected from 495 teleseismic events recorded at 20 three-component broadband seismograms. A modified multi-channel cross-correlation method was adopted to automatically calculate the relative arrival-time residuals of all teleseismic events, which significantly improved the efficiency and precision of the arrival-time data collection. Our results show that alternating low- and high-Vp anomalies are visible beneath the Himalayan and Lhasa blocks across the YTS, indicating that strong lateral heterogeneities exist beneath the study region. A significant high-Vp zone is visible beneath the southern edge of the Lhasa block at 50–100 km depths close to the YTS, which might indicate the rigid Tibetan lithosphere basement. There exists a prominent low-Vp zone beneath the Himalayan block to the south of the YTS extending to ~150 km depth, which might be associated with the fragmentation of the underthrusting Indian continental lithosphere (ICL) and induce localized upwelling of asthenospheric materials from the upper mantle. In addition, significant low-Vp anomalies were observed beneath the Yadong–Gulu rift and the Cona–Sangri rift extending to ~300 km depth, indicating that the tearing of the subducted ICL might provide pathways for the localized asthenospheric materials upwelling, which contributes to the widespread distribution of north–south trending rifts and geothermal activities in southern Tibet.

Eastward subduction of the Indian plate beneath the Indo-Myanmese arc revealed by teleseismic P-wave tomography

The deep structure of the eastward-subducting Indian plate can provide new information on the dynamics of the India-Eurasia collision. We collected and processed waveform data from temporary seismic arrays (networks) on the eastern Tibetan Plateau, seismic arrays in Northeast India and Myanmar, and permanent stations of the China Digital Seismic Network in Tibet, Gansu, Qinghai, Yunnan, and Sichuan. We combined these data with phase reports from observation stations of the International Seismological Center on the Indian plate and selected 124,808 high-quality P-wave relative travel-time residuals. Next, we used these data to invert the 3-D P-wave velocity structure of the upper mantle to a depth of 800 km beneath the eastern segment of the arcuate Himalayan orogen, at the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The results reveal a high-angle, easterly dipping subducting plate extending more than 200 km beneath the Indo-Myanmese arc. The plate breaks off at roughly 96°E; its fragments have passed through the 410-km discontinuity (D410) into the mantle transition zone (MTZ). The MTZ beneath the Tengchong volcanic area contains a high-velocity anomaly, which does not exceed the Red River fault to the east. No other large-scale continuous subducted plates were observed in the MTZ. However, a horizontally spreading high-velocity anomaly was identified on the D410 in some regions. The anomaly may represent the negatively buoyant 90°E Ridge plate or a thickened and delaminated lithospheric block experiencing collision and compression at the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The Tengchong volcano may originate from the mantle upwelling through the slab window formed by the break-off of the subducting Indian continental plate and oceanic plate in the upper mantle. Low-velocity upper mantle materials on the west side of the Indo-Myanmese arc may have supplemented materials to the Tengchong volcano.

Orogenic lithosphere and slabs in the greater Alpine area – interpretations based on teleseismic P-wave tomography

Abstract. Based on recent results of AlpArray, we propose a new model of Alpine collision that involves subduction and detachment of thick (∼ 180 km) European lithosphere. Our approach combines teleseismic P-wave tomography and existing local earthquake tomography (LET), allowing us to image the Alpine slabs and their connections with the overlying orogenic lithosphere at an unprecedented resolution. The images call into question the conventional notion that downward-moving lithosphere and slabs comprise only seismically fast lithosphere. We propose that the European lithosphere is heterogeneous, locally containing layered positive and negative Vp anomalies of up to 5 %–6 %. We attribute this layered heterogeneity to seismic anisotropy and/or compositional differences inherited from the Variscan and pre-Variscan orogenic cycles rather than to thermal anomalies. The lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (LAB) of the European Plate therefore lies below the conventionally defined seismological LAB. In contrast, the lithosphere of the Adriatic Plate is thinner and has a lower boundary approximately at the base of strong positive Vp anomalies at 100–120 km. Horizontal and vertical tomographic slices reveal that beneath the central and western Alps, the European slab dips steeply to the south and southeast and is only locally still attached to the Alpine lithosphere. However, in the eastern Alps and Carpathians, this slab is completely detached from the orogenic crust and dips steeply to the north to northeast. This along-strike change in attachment coincides with an abrupt decrease in Moho depth below the Tauern Window, the Moho being underlain by a pronounced negative Vp anomaly that reaches eastward into the Pannonian Basin area. This negative Vp anomaly is interpreted as representing hot upwelling asthenosphere that heated the overlying crust, allowing it to accommodate Neogene orogen-parallel lateral extrusion and thinning of the ALCAPA tectonic unit (upper plate crustal edifice of Alps and Carpathians) to the east. A European origin of the northward-dipping, detached slab segment beneath the eastern Alps is likely since its down-dip length matches estimated Tertiary shortening in the eastern Alps accommodated by originally south-dipping subduction of European lithosphere. A slab anomaly beneath the Dinarides is of Adriatic origin and dips to the northeast. There is no evidence that this slab dips beneath the Alps. The slab anomaly beneath the Northern Apennines, also of Adriatic origin, hangs subvertically and is detached from the Apenninic orogenic crust and foreland. Except for its northernmost segment where it locally overlies the southern end of the European slab of the Alps, this slab is clearly separated from the latter by a broad zone of low Vp velocities located south of the Alpine slab beneath the Po Basin. Considered as a whole, the slabs of the Alpine chain are interpreted as highly attenuated, largely detached sheets of continental margin and Alpine Tethyan oceanic lithosphere that locally reach down to a slab graveyard in the mantle transition zone (MTZ).

Upper mantle structure under the Zagros collision zone; insights from 3D teleseismic P-wave tomography

We map the lateral variations of P-wave velocity beneath the Zagros collision zone in Iran down to 800 km depth by regional travel time tomography. We invert 32,293 relative travel time residuals from five temporary seismic networks across the collision zone in NW and central Zagros and northern Iran, and a large number of permanent stations distributed over the Iranian Plateau. A salient feature of our model is a ~225 km thick lithosphere beneath the Zagros, almost twice as thick as in the rest of Iran. Slab detachment at a depth range of 250–300 km from the base of the subducted continental Arabia is clearly distinguishable in central Zagros. In NW Zagros detachment appears to be at an earlier stage. Beneath the central Iran Plateau, we observe shallow low-velocity regions down to 200 km depth, and smaller patches with significantly higher velocity in the 200–400 km depth range. This pattern might suggest a post-collisional foundering of the mantle lithosphere in the upper plate. The subducted slab seems to penetrate into the lower mantle in a segmented fashion, with no evidence for a stagnant slab above the 660 km interface.

Imaging of the Upper Mantle Beneath Southeast Asia: Constrained by Teleseismic P-Wave Tomography

It is of great significance to construct a three-dimensional underground velocity model for the study of geodynamics and tectonic evolution. Southeast Asia has attracted much attention due to its complex structural features. In this paper, we collected relative travel time residuals data for 394 stations distributed in Southeast Asia from 2006 to 2019, and 14,011 seismic events were obtained. Then, teleseismic tomography was applied by using relative travel time residuals data to invert the velocity where the fast marching method (FMM) and subspace method were used for every iteration. A novel 3D P-wave velocity model beneath Southeast Asia down to 720 km was obtained using this approach. The tomographic results suggest that the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, the Philippines, Sumatra, and Java, and the deep part of Borneo exhibit high velocity anomalies, while low velocity anomalies were found in the deep part of the South China Sea (SCS) basin and in the shallow part of Borneo and areas near the subduction zone. High velocity anomalies can be correlated to subduction plates and stable land masses, while low velocity anomalies can be correlated to island arcs and upwelling of mantle material caused by subduction plates. We found a southward subducting high velocity body in the Nansha Trough, which was presumed to be a remnant of the subduction of the Dangerous Grounds into Borneo. It is further inferred that the Nansha Trough and the Dangerous Grounds belong to the same tectonic unit. According to the tomographic images, a high velocity body is located in the deep underground of Indochina–Natuna Island–Borneo–Palawan, depth range from 240 km to 660 km. The location of the high velocity body is consistent with the distribution range of the ophiolite belt, so we speculate that the high velocity body is the remnant of thee Proto-South China Sea (PSCS) and Paleo-Tethys. This paper conjectures that the PSCS was the southern branch of Paleo-Tethys and the gateway between Paleo-Tethys and the Paleo-Pacific Ocean. Due to the squeeze of the Australian plate, PSCS closed from west to east in a scissor style, and was eventually extinct under Borneo.

Variable modification of continental lithosphere during the Proterozoic Grenville orogeny: Evidence from teleseismic P-wave tomography

Cratons, the ancient cores of the continents, have survived thermal and mechanical erosion over multiple Wilson cycles, but the ability of their margins to withstand modification during continental convergence is debated. The Proterozoic Grenville orogeny operated for ≥300 Myr along the eastern edge of the proto-North American continent Laurentia, whose age varied north-to-south from ∼1.5−0.25 Gyr at the time of collision. The preserved Grenville Province, west of the Appalachian terranes, has remained largely tectonically quiescent since its formation. Thick, cool, mantle lithosphere that underlies these Proterozoic regions is typically identified by elevated seismic velocities but lithospheric modification by fluid/melt-derived metasomatic enrichment above a subduction zone, can lead to a reduction in VP with little effect on VS and density. Absolute P-wavespeed constraints are therefore a vital complement to existing S-wave tomographic models of North America to investigate craton edge modification mechanisms in the Grenville orogen.New P-wave tomographic imaging of the North American continent, which benefits from recent developments in arrival-time processing of regional network deployments from the Canadian shield, reveals along strike wavespeed variation in the Grenville orogen. In the north, high seismic wavespeeds (to depths of 250 km) extend eastwards, from the Archean core of North America to beneath the Canadian Grenville Province. In contrast, below the southern U.S., high lithospheric wavespeeds are restricted to west of the Grenville Province, in particular at depths less than 150 km. We argue that subduction-derived metasomatism beneath eastern Laurentia modified the southern Grenville, prior to thermal stabilization and perhaps mantle keel formation. Beneath the northern Grenville, the thick, depleted Laurentian lithosphere resisted extensive metasomatism. Along strike age differences in Grenvillian terranes and their resulting metasomatic modification histories suggests that at least 250 Myr is required for Proterozoic lithosphere to gain resistance to modification.

Lithospheric delamination and upwelling asthenosphere in the Longmenshan area: insight from teleseismic P-wave tomography

We apply teleseismic P-wave tomography to reconstruct the velocity structure of the Longmenshan area. Our results show possible large-scale delamination beneath the Songpan-Ganzi and Qiangtang terranes, which induced upwelling asthenosphere. Upwelling asthenosphere might have led to lower crust heating, facilitating eastward extrusion of the Songpan Ganzi terrane resulting in localized deformation and uplift along the Longmenshan orogenic belt. We suggest that the eastward extrusion of the Songpan-Ganzi terrane against the rigid lithospheric root of the Sichuan Basin results in stress accumulation and release, leading to large earthquakes in the Longmenshan area.

Upper mantle structure and geodynamics of the Sumatra subduction zone from 3-D teleseismic P-wave tomography

Teleseismic waveforms from a passive array of 63 seismic stations are applied to image the 3-D P-wave velocity structure of the mantle in the Sumatra subduction zone. In this study, 102 teleseisms with good signal-to-noise ratios were selected. In total, 1627 P-wave relative arrivals have been extracted with high accuracy based on multi-channel cross-correlation and adaptive stacking methods. With this dataset, we conducted the 3-D tomographic inversions for the 3-D P-wave velocity structure of the upper mantle in the Sumatra subduction zone. The tomographic results suggest significant lateral variations of P-wave velocity in the mantle. The trench-parallel low-velocity features in the upper mantle reveal that there may be a trench-parallel flow associated with 3-D mantle flow beneath the subducting slab. The subducting Indo-Australian Plate is also clearly imaged as a continuous high-velocity anomalous zone in the mantle along the Sumatra Island. Beneath southern Sumatra, there could have a lateral detachment of high-velocity anomaly from ∼560 km to the deep part of the slab, which may imply the slab tearing. If it is true, we could infer that this tear in the slab may be terminated around 17.5 Ma. The advancing speed of the Indo-Australian Plate increasing from North Sumatra to South Sumatra plays a key role in the slab tear, which suggests likely that the northeastward subducting of the Indo-Australian Plate along the Sunda trench and the southeastward clockwise motion of the Sunda Shelf may form a torque tracing the Sumatra Island that facilitated the clockwise rotation of the fast-moving plate. With the oblique subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate, the asymmetric distribution of stresses along this torque on either side may induce the slab tearing.

Seismic evidence for the absence of deeply subducted continental slabs in the lower lithosphere beneath the Central Orogenic Belt of China

A study of teleseismic P-wave tomography was carried out along the Central Orogenic Belt of China (COBC) consisting of the Qinling, Tongbai, Hong'an, Dabie and Sulu orogens that were created by northward subduction of the South China Block beneath the North China Block to subarc depths in the Paleozoic to Mesozoic. The results show the presence of high velocity anomaly underneath the COBC and its adjacent cratonic regions but the absence of high velocity anomaly in the lower lithosphere beneath the COBC. The high velocity anomaly is deep underneath the COBC, possibly representing the relic of the subducted Paleo-Tethyan oceanic slab predating the continental deep subduction of the South China Block. The high velocity anomaly is also deep underneath the southeastern part of the North China Block, possibly being a relic of the subducted Paleo-Pacific slab. However, no relic of the deeply subducted continental slab is seismically detected in the lower lithosphere beneath the Dabie and Sulu orogens, though the occurrence of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks in the two orogens has clearly demonstrated continental deep subduction to subarc depths in the Triassic. Instead there is only the relatively flat and uniform Moho boundary beneath the COBC region, indicating that the subduction-thickened continental lithosphere along the COBC has lost its root. It is inferred that the orogenic root beneath the COBC region has been foundered into the asthenospheric mantle at the postcollisional stage. The foundering would have taken place in the Early Cretaceous as indicated by the extensive occurrence of magmatic and migmatitic rocks along the COBC. As a consequence, the seismic tomography cannot detect the deeply subducted continental slab remnant from the Triassic period. It is possible that the tomographic visibility of continental subduction in the lower lithosphere is limited to the past 100Myr.

Mantle roots of the Emeishan plume: an evaluation based on teleseismic P-wave tomography

Abstract. The voluminous magmatism associated with large igneous provinces (LIPs) is commonly correlated to upwelling plumes from the core–mantle boundary (CMB). Here we analyse seismic tomographic data from the Emeishan LIP in southwestern China. Our results reveal vestiges of delaminated crustal and/or lithospheric mantle, with an upwelling in the upper mantle beneath the Emeishan LIP rather than a plume rooted in the CMB. We suggest that the magmatism and the Emeishan LIP formation might be connected with the melting of delaminated lower crustal and/or lithospheric components which resulted in plume-like upwelling from the upper mantle or from the mantle transition zone.

The deforming Nazca slab in the mantle transition zone and lower mantle: Constraints from teleseismic tomography on the deeply subducted slab between 6°S and 32°S

We present new tomographic models of the Nazca slab under South America from 6°S to 32°S, and from 95 km to lower mantle (895 km) depths. By combining data from 14 separate networks in the central Andes, we use finite-frequency teleseismic P-wave tomography to image the Nazca slab from the upper mantle into the mantle transition zone (MTZ) and the uppermost lower mantle on a regional scale. Our tomography shows that there is significant along-strike variation in the morphology of the Nazca slab in the MTZ and the lower mantle. Thickening of the slab in the MTZ is observed north of the Bolivian orocline, possibly related to buckling or folding of the slab in response to the penetration of a near-vertical slab into the higher-viscosity lower mantle, which decreases the sinking velocity of the slab. South of the orocline, the slab continues into the lower mantle with only minor deformation in the MTZ. In the lower mantle, a similar difference in morphology is observed. North of 16°S, the slab anomaly in the lower mantle is more coherent and penetrates more steeply into the lower mantle. To the south, the slab dip appears to be decreasing just below the 660 km discontinuity. This change in slab morphology in the MTZ and lower mantle appears to correspond to the change in the dip of the slab as it enters the MTZ, from steeply dipping in the north to more moderately dipping in the south.

Shear wave velocities in the upper mantle of the Western Alps: new constraints using array analysis of seismic surface waves

It remains challenging to obtain absolute shear wave velocities of heterogeneities of small lateral extension in the uppermost mantle. This study presents a cross-section of Vs across the strongly heterogeneous 3-D structure of the western European Alps, based on array analysis of data from 92 broad-band seismic stations from the CIFALPS experiment and from permanent networks in France and Italy. Half of the stations were located along a dense sublinear array. Using a combination of these stations and off-profile stations, fundamental-mode Rayleigh wave dispersion curves were calculated using a combined frequency-time beamforming approach. We calculated dispersion curves for seven arrays of approximately 100 km aperture and 14 arrays of approximately 50 km aperture, the latter with the aim of obtaining a 2-D vertical cross-section of Vs beneath the western Alps. The dispersion curves were inverted for Vs(z), with crustal interfaces imposed from a previous receiver function study. The array approach proved feasible, as Vs(z) from independent arrays vary smoothly across the profile length. Results from the seven large arrays show that the shear velocity of the upper mantle beneath the European plate is overall low compared to AK135 with the lowest velocities in the internal part of the western Alps, and higher velocities east of the Alps beneath the Po plain. The 2-D Vs model is coherent with (i) a ∼100 km thick eastward-dipping European lithosphere west of the Alps, (ii) very high velocities beneath the Po plain, coherent with the presence of the Alpine (European) slab and (iii) a narrow low-velocity anomaly beneath the core of the western Alps (from the Brianconnais to the Dora Maira massif), and approximately colocated with a similar anomaly observed in a recent teleseismic P-wave tomography. This intriguing anomaly is also supported by traveltime variations of subvertically propagating body waves from two teleseismic events that are approximately located on the profile great circle.

Mantle structure beneath the incipient Okavango rift zone in southern Africa

Numerous investigations of the mature segments of the East African rift system (EARS) have significantly improved our understanding of the structure and processes associated with well-developed continental rifts. In contrast, knowledge of rifting processes at their early stage is still significantly limited. Here we present results from a teleseismic P-wave tomography investigation of the incipient Okavango rift zone (ORZ), which is located at the southwestern terminus of the EARS. P-wave relative travel-time residuals recorded by 17 recently deployed portable seismic stations were manually picked and inverted for three-dimensional upper-mantle and mantle transition-zone tomographic images beneath the ORZ and its adjacent areas. High-velocity anomalies probably representing cratonic lithosphere are visible under the Congo and Kalahari cratons, extending to depths of ∼250–350 km. The tectonic boundary of the Congo craton is observed along the western edge of the ORZ. A localized low-velocity anomaly of about –1% in magnitude is revealed in the upper asthenosphere beneath the ORZ, which is interpreted to represent decompression melting induced by lithospheric thinning. The results support the notion that the initiation and early-stage development of the ORZ are mostly due to lithospheric stretching resulted from the relative motion between the Archean Congo and Kalahari cratons along preexisting ancient orogenic zones.

Complex Indian subduction style with slab fragmentation beneath the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis revealed by teleseismic P-wave tomography

On the eastern margin of the Himalayan orogenic belt, the rapid uplift of the Namche Barwa metamorphic terrane and significant bending of the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone occur. The formation mechanism and dynamics of the Eastern Himalaya Syntaxis (EHS) is still debated. In order to better understand the deep structures beneath the EHS, we deployed 35 broadband seismic stations around the Namche Barwa Mountain. The data were integrated with existing datasets for a 3-D teleseismic P-wave tomography. The results demonstrate complex deep structures and significantly contrasting Indian subduction styles in the eastern Himalaya. In the western region of the EHS, the Indian slab flatly subducts under southern Tibet and might extend to the Bangong-Nujiang Suture. In contrast, a (north)eastward steep subduction occurred in the eastern region of EHS. The contrasting subduction styles result in tearing and fragmentation of the Indian lithosphere between the flat and steep subducting slabs beneath the EHS. Consequently, the hot asthenospheric mantle may rise through the slab window, which might further lead to the rapid uplift of Namche Barwa and the formation of EHS. The lateral variation in subduction/collision mode and slab tearing induced asthenospheric mantle upwelling is similar to that observed in the Hellenide and Anatolide domains of the Tethyan orogen.

Complex Structure beneath the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau from Teleseismic P-Wave Tomography

Abstract A high‐resolution image of the deep structures in the southeastern Tibetan plateau and Yangtze block was revealed by teleseismic inversion based on the dense teleseismic data collected from the permanent seismic stations and a recently deployed temporary seismic array. The results show that low‐velocity anomaly is imaged mainly in the eastern and southeastern Tibetan plateau (except the southern Panzhihua area) above 200 km depth in the upper mantle, whereas a high‐velocity anomaly exists to its east especially beneath the Sichuan basin. We infer the cold crustal and upper mantle of the Sichuan basin prevents the extrusion of mantle materials of the Tibetan plateau, while the cold lithosphere of the western Yangtze block is eroded by the upper‐mantle materials with high temperature from the extrusion of the Tibetan plateau. Under the Tengchong volcanic region, a low‐velocity anomaly extends to 300 km depth. A high‐velocity anomaly is shown beneath the region from the southern Sichuan to Yunnan in the mantle transition zone, and the anomaly reaches deeper to the lower mantle in the western Yunnan area. The widespread low velocity above the high velocity in the Yunnan region indicates the dehydration of the Indian plate may occur in the mantle transition zone, which causes fast‐rising heat and lower melting temperature in the upper mantle. A small‐scale, high‐velocity anomaly in the southern Panzhihua region is probably related to the late Paleozoic mantle plume activity. It plays an important role in impeding the southward extrusion of the plateau materials, which might be one of the causes for the rapid change of the polarization direction of the fast shear waves around the area.
