Green technology diffusion model and simulation considering enterprise technology absorption capacity

ABSTRACT The diffusion and wide application of green technologies are important means to achieve climate change mitigation. Concerning the green technology absorption capacity and technology diffusion willingness of enterprises, this paper divided enterprises into four categories, constructed a green technology diffusion model and analysed the equilibrium point and stability of the model. Then, we studied the diffusion process and laws of green technology through simulation experiments. The results show that in the green technology diffusion system, the basic regeneration number is the key factor in determining the equilibrium state of green technology diffusion. The disease-free equilibrium point of the green technology diffusion system is globally asymptotically stable, and the endemic equilibrium point is locally asymptotically stable. In order to improve the speed and scale of green technology diffusion, it is necessary to create green technology diffusion sources through multiple channels, improve enterprise technology absorption capacity through multiple methods, and enhance enterprise green technology diffusion willingness at multiple levels.

Innovation Capacities of Mexican States

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the innovation performance of Mexican states to identify the factors that explain the unequal performance of Mexican states in terms of innovation generation. Theoretical Framework: The study design is based on the regional innovation capabilities (RICs) proposed by Muller et al (2008). Method: The impact of the RICs on the generation of innovations in Mexican states is analyzed using 17 indicators under a multiple regression model based on data from official Mexican sources for each of the 32 states. Results and Discussion: The results show that regional technology absorption capacity is the factor that has the greatest impact on the innovation performance of Mexico's states. Research Implications: These results highlight the relevance of factors associated with technological learning for the patenting rate performance of Mexican states. These implications could include the designers and decision-makers of public policies on science and technology, as well as the institutions that produce research and development. Originality/Value: This research can be a very particular reference for future research to address and propose new conceptual frameworks for the study of regional inequalities in the generation of innovations. In addition, this study evidences the need for greater availability of data related to innovation processes in the country.

Evolutionary Game Analysis on Cooperative Behavior of Major Projects’ Technology Innovation Subjects under General Contracting Mode

Major projects are the important platform for enhancing a country’s comprehensive national power and strengthening its capacity for independent innovation. Although major projects in China have made remarkable achievements, willingness to cooperate and innovate has not achieved the desired target. In this paper, the evolutionary game model of cooperative innovation behavior of general contractors and subcontractors is constructed by considering reputational factors. Through theoretical derivation, the influence of the distribution ratio of collaborative innovation benefit, spillover technology absorption capacity, and reputation discounting coefficient on innovation behavior is analyzed. Finally, MATLAB software is used to simulate the dynamic evolution process of strategy selection. The results show that (1) a reasonable benefit distribution coefficient can promote the evolution of innovation behavior in a positive direction; (2) both the reduction of innovation cost and the increase of spillover technology absorption capacity can make the innovation subject more inclined to choose the active collaborative innovation strategy; and (3) it is the higher-than-threshold reputation loss that can effectively inhibit the “free-rider” behavior. The research conclusions and managerial implications can provide reference for improving the willingness to cooperate in major projects’ technology innovation.

Research on the spatial spillover effect of carbon trading market development on regional emission reduction

This paper introduces the current situation of carbon trading market in China and the effect of carbon emission reduction in each region. Theoretically, it expounds the influence mechanism and spatial spillover way of carbon trading market on regional carbon emission. Next, we use the data of 30 provinces in China from 2006 to 2019 to build a continuous spatial difference in difference model (SDM-DID) to empirically study the spatial spillover effect of carbon trading market on regional emission reduction. The results are as follows: First, the implementation of the pilot policy of carbon emission trading has significantly promoted the carbon emission reduction in the pilot areas. From the perspective of impact mechanism, the implementation of carbon trading pilot policy promotes carbon emission reduction in pilot areas by promoting clean transformation of energy consumption structure, improving technology absorption capacity and stimulating development of low-carbon technologies. From the perspective of spatial spillover effect, China’s regional carbon emissions have significant spatial spillover effect, and carbon emissions trading has spatial spillover effect. From the perspective of spatial spillover, the carbon emission trading market promotes the carbon emission reduction in neighboring areas by promoting the clean transformation of energy structure in neighboring areas, improving technology absorption capacity and promoting technological progress.

The power of role models in a team: The impact of lead entrepreneur's digital leadership on digital entrepreneurial success

Digital entrepreneurial success has gained attention because the development of digitalization has brought multiple opportunities for entrepreneurs along with many challenges. While prior research has primarily examined the determinants of success at the founder and organizational levels, the impact of venture groups has been neglected, resulting in a lack of exploration of the group effect. In this study, we apply social learning theory to investigate how lead entrepreneur's digital leadership influences digital entrepreneurial success. By analyzing data from 88 digital entrepreneurial teams, we found that lead entrepreneur's digital leadership is positively related to entrepreneurial team's digital entrepreneurial success. Likewise, lead entrepreneur's digital leadership positively correlates with digital entrepreneurial success through technology absorptive capacity and technological innovation capability. Moreover, we argue that leader group prototypicality not only strengthens the impact of lead entrepreneur's digital leadership on the entrepreneurial team's technology absorptive capacity but also amplifies its influence on the entrepreneurial team's technological innovation capability. Our results provide contributions to both the entrepreneurship and leadership literature.

The Impact of Technological Mergers and Acquisitions on Enterprise Innovation: A Review

Innovation is the source of competitive advantage for enterprises. In the context of global industrial upgrading and increasingly fierce technological competition, enhancing innovation capabilities is key to enterprises’ success. Technology mergers and acquisitions have become an important way for enterprises to acquire external technology, to enhance their innovation capabilities, and to achieve rapid development. Many scholars have extensively researched technology mergers and acquisitions and enterprise innovation. This paper summarizes the relevant research literature according to different research contents. The research content includes the motivation for technology mergers and acquisitions, analyzing the impact mechanism and the path of technology mergers and acquisitions regarding enterprise innovation from the perspectives of technology relevance, the technology absorption capacity, the institutional environment, and corporate governance, as well as related research on the consequences of technology mergers and acquisitions for enterprise innovation and measuring methods for technology mergers and acquisitions and enterprise innovation. This paper summarizes and organizes the relevant literature, aiming to find research directions and enrich future research fields by summarizing it. This effort provides important theoretical support for the strategic decision-making of enterprise technology mergers and acquisitions under the guidance of innovation, and it also provides a reference for further optimizing the innovation incentive environment.

The determinants of eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) adoption: a cross-country study

AbstractThis paper investigates the determinants of eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) adoption using the Technology-Organizational-Environment framework. This framework explains how the process of adopting and implementing XBRL is influenced by the technological context (country's firm-level technology absorption and technological capacity), organizational context (education) and environmental context (level of economic development; degree of external economic openness; investor protection; accounting system and the burden of government regulation). Using a sample of 78 countries during the period 2009–2017, we find that countries with high levels of technology absorption, higher levels of economic development and strong investor protection are more likely to adopt XBRL.

Global Value Chain Position and Corporate Environmental Performance: A Comparison of Domestic and Foreign Perspectives in China

Under the reality of global value chain (GVC) restructuring, the GVC is not only production networks, but also pollution sources that depend on production activities. Based on domestic and foreign markets, this paper proposes the hypothesis that different GVC locations have differential effects on pollution emissions. Using industrial pollution data and two models (a panel fixed-effects model and an instrumental variable two-stage least squares model), we find that increasing exported upstreamness and net upstreamness in GVC by one unit reduces pollution emissions by 3–7%, while increasing imported upstreamness raises pollution emissions by about 5%. We also find that the position in the GVC influences the green production efficiency of enterprises. To mitigate the environmental problems caused by GVC participation, we suggest that external industry regulations and internal technology absorption capacity should be enhanced. This paper provides useful policy implications for adjusting the GVC position of enterprises under the new international division of labor.

Can Digital Services Trade Liberalization Improve the Quality of Green Innovation of Enterprises? Evidence from China

Green innovation is a critical driver in achieving the goals of “carbon peaking” and “carbon neutrality”, as well as an important aid in accelerating green transformation. Does the opening-up of digital services trade, as a major component of the high-level opening-up strategy, serve to improve the quality of green innovation of Chinese enterprises at this critical juncture in China’s promotion of ecological civilization? To answer this question, this paper measures the degree of openness of digital services trade in each industry in China, and it empirically examines the impact of digital services trade liberalization on enterprises’ green innovation quality using data from A-share listed companies from 2014 to 2021. This research finds that, first, digital services trade liberalization can significantly improve the quality of green innovation of Chinese enterprises, which still holds after a series of robustness tests. Second, mechanism analysis indicates that digital services trade liberalization promotes enterprises’ green innovation quality by improving human capital level, increasing green R&D expenditure, and strengthening information resource sharing. Third, a heterogeneity test shows that the effect of digital services trade liberalization on the quality of green innovation is more prominent for state-owned enterprises, enterprises with stronger technology absorption capacity, highly competitive industries, and regions with a high intensity of environmental regulations. The study’s findings not only provide new perspectives and ideas for enterprises’ green innovation practices in the midst of the digital services trade wave but also theoretical and empirical support for the inherent self-consistency between high-level opening-up and green development.

The effects of industrial intelligence on China's energy intensity: The role of technology absorptive capacity

This study examines the impact of industrial intelligence on energy intensity in China, with a special perspective on the role of technology absorptive capacity in the relationship. Based on panel data from 30 Chinese provinces from 2006 to 2020, the direct and moderating effect model results show that industrial intelligence reduces energy intensity, and the interaction of industrial intelligence with technology absorptive capacity (i.e., assessed by the variables of information infrastructure, human capital, and technological innovation) tends to enhance the energy intensity reduction effect of industrial intelligence. Further, the threshold effect model shows that the reduction effect is heterogenous across regions: industrial intelligence tends to reduce energy intensity more in regions with higher information infrastructure, human capital, and technological innovation levels than in those with lower levels. Comprehensive governmental strategies to improve energy efficiency should concomitantly promote the sustainable development of industrial intelligence and technology absorption capacity.

Interrelationship between strategic factors, technology and organizational learning: a systematic literature review

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the relationship between organizational learning (OL) and technology through the lens of strategic factors and to ascertain future research directions.Design/methodology/approachThe systematic literature review method was applied in three stages to the 76 articles obtained from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and EBSCO databases.FindingsThis research revealed the evolution of the role of OL in innovation, performance, knowledge management and technological adoption and showcases a detailed conceptual model relating technology outcomes (technological innovation and capabilities) to OL outcomes (technology absorptive capacity, technological proactivity, as well as information technology [IT] and organization process alignment).Research limitations/implicationsThis review includes articles mainly in English and excludes conference proceedings.Practical implicationsThis research attempts to guide managers and policymakers to foster an organizational culture conducive to technological adoption and OL. It helps organizations develop strategies for new product development, including strategic alliances and strategic leadership.Originality/valueThis review formalizes the linkages between technological absorptive capacity, technological proactivity and IT with technological innovation and capabilities. It identifies research gaps and elucidates future research directions.

Technology import modes, environmental regulation types and total factor energy efficiency

ABSTRACT This paper examines the mediating roles of different modes of technology import on the relationship between environmental regulations (ERs) and total factor energy efficiency (TFEE) by using the data of 30 provinces of China from 2008 to 2019. Based on the Porter hypothesis, this work reveals that different modes of technology import can be driven by different environmental regulation types, including command-control environmental regulation (CCER) and market-incentive environmental regulation (MIER), which have different impacts on TFEE. By distinguishing technology imports into the purchases of foreign technology (POFT) and the imitations of foreign technology (IOFT), the results show that CCER and MIER induce corporate executives to focus on POFT, resulting in sluggishness in self-innovation and accordingly undermining TFEE. The MIER shifts corporate executives’ attention on IOFT, inspiring them to focus on re-innovation, and is beneficial for improving TFEE. Additionally, this research finds that technology absorption capacity (TAC) can blunt the negative relationship between POFT and TFEE, as well as strengthen IOFT’s positive effect on TFEE. This research unearths the roles of different technology import modes and environmental regulation modes on TFEE. It also uncovers the role of TAC as a moderator for improving TFEE within the context of technology import. It offers a new dialogue perspective about the effects of environmental regulation types on green development, and contributes to the porter hypothesis literature by incorporating the missing technology import factors into the theory, and also provides managerial and policy implications.

Reframing innovation: A case of split personality

The meaning and definition of innovation are vague and multi-faceted, measured by a combination of 81 variables by the Global Innovation Index—GII, challenging policy makers in the conception of appropriate economic development strategies. Based on extensive research on the relationships between the variables, this study presents and tests a simple analytical model that considers innovation as two separate and not necessarily connected themes: the creation of knowledge and the concrete implementation of innovation activities (endogenous variables), each influenced by separate ecosystem factors: “innovation initiators” and enabling factors (exogenous variables). This model facilitates the analysis of the question to which extent an innovation process requires policy measures oriented to knowledge creation.The relationships were tested by conducting regression analysis with data on 81 variables across 132 economies based on the GII for 2021. The results supported the viability of the model. An important finding was the relatively low impact of knowledge creation on innovative outputs within the country (such as the production of new products), whereas the focus was mostly on the export of knowledge (as measured by intellectual property receipts). Another finding was the importance of the technology absorption capacity and availability of local skills for a country’s innovative business activity, independent of pure knowledge creation activity.The model has implications for the development of innovation policies under specific conditions in an economy. Prevailing ecosystem exogenous conditions and the potential for changes within them may lead to the optimization of innovation activity by focusing on technological advancement, which need not be conducive to new production (contrary to prevailing beliefs). Conditions in other economies or regions may justify policies focused on the development of innovative products or creation of new organizational models rather than on support for technological startups.

Analysis of the Effect of Information Technology Development, Absorbility Capacity on MSMe Business Performance

Information technology absorption capacity is a factor that can affect business performance. The development of information technology can positively impact businesses to improve business performance. Absorption capacity also affects improving business performance. The more absorption capacity you have, your business performance will improve. The development of technology and its absorption capacity will positively impact businesses to improve their business performance. This study aims to determine whether or not the influence of information technology and absorption capacity on business performance in Tegal Regency-Indonesia. The sampling technique in this study used the Proportional Cluster Random Sampling technique. In this study, the Slovin formula was used, and the samples obtained were 96 people. The analytical method used is multiple linear regression analysis. The study's results found a significant effect of information technology on business performance. Then there is a significant effect of absorption capacity on MSME business performance in Tegal Regency. Suggestions that can be given based on the results of this study are that MSMEs should pay more attention to the development of information technology and develop their absorption capacity so that MSMEs can further improve their business performance and achieve maximum results as expected.

The role of technological absorption capacity, enviropreneurial orientation, and green marketing in enhancing business' sustainability: evidence from fast-moving consumer goods in Tanzania

PurposeGiven current global environmental concerns, traditional marketing and entrepreneurial practices of small businesses are considered ineffective. This is because sustainability requires the involvement of social, economic, and environmental dimensions. This study, therefore, aims at analyzing the moderating effect of technological absorptive capacity (TEOC) in the relationship between green marketing mix (GMX), enviropreneurial orientation (ENVO) and the sustainability of small businesses (SUST).Design/methodology/approachThis study is cross-sectional. This study used data from 243 fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industries, such as food and beverages, cleaning products, office supplies, cosmetics, and toiletries. Structural equation mdeling (SEM) and the PROCESS macro test were employed during data analysis.FindingsThe findings suggest that GMX and ENVO are significant determinants of SUST. Also, TEOC is a significant moderator of GMX, ENVO, and SUST.Research limitations/implicationsThis study used owner-managers as the respondents; future studies can use employees and customers to find out how small businesses involve other stakeholders in designing GMX and ENVO and adopting technologies for business sustainability and adopting technologies for business sustainability.Practical implicationsThe study has practical implications for policymakers and owner-managers, especially on the significant contributions of GMX, ENVO, and TEOC to business sustainability.Originality/valueDepending only on traditional marketing and entrepreneurial practices is no longer a reliable technique for business sustainability. By bringing environmental aspects into business management through a green marketing mix and enviropreneurial orientation, the study provides a unique and new way of thinking about sustainability. Also, the study adds knowledge to the body of literature through a moderating effect of TEOC in the relationship between GMX, ENVO, and SUST.

The FDI Spillover Effect on the Efficiency and Productivity of Manufacturing Firms: Its Implication on Open Innovation

In this study, we investigated the effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) spillovers on firm production and technical efficiency in Indonesia’s manufacturing sector from 2010 to 2015. We scrutinized three different channels of horizontal spillover, namely, demonstration, technology adoption, and competition channels. We also captured the heterogeneous effect of firms by categorizing them based on their technological intensity (low, medium, or high). Using time-varying stochastic production frontier analysis, we found that manufacturing firms in each technological group benefit from FDI, either from productivity improvement or technical efficiency improvement. High-technology firms mainly benefit from FDI due to their high technological absorption capability. Meanwhile, medium-high and medium-low tech firms increase productivity through the demonstration effect and the technology adoption channel, despite underperforming in technical efficiency. Finally, low-tech firms, which primarily employ unskilled workers, suffer from large inefficiency. We found that increased FDI, combined with improvements in technology absorption capacity, can help revitalize the productivity of low-tech firms. FDI, firm size, and access to foreign inputs all support production effects but have no direct positive impact on firms’ technical efficiency. The results of this study suggest that the government should ensure that domestic firms can absorb the technical capability of a foreign presence. Open innovation can help strengthen foreign–domestic linkages to contribute to growth through the transfer of knowledge, skills, and technologies.

Triggering disruptive technology absorptive capacity by CIOs. Explorative research on a micro-foundation lens

Individual technology absorptive capacity (TAC) is triggering the use of such technologies in a more effective, efficient, and easy mode by Chief Information Officers (CIOs). The CIO, albeit involved in the firm's micro level, encourages firms’ TAC at meso level. Although the CIO encourages the use of disruptive technologies, studies on this field are still scarce. This research bridges the gap in the literature, offering an empirical analysis of a large-scale sample of 754 CIOs from knowledge-intensive SMEs to evaluate TAC under a micro-foundation lens. The analysis provides detailed stimuli in rethinking the enhancement of CIOs, emphasizing the effect of the micro level in intercepting disruptive technologies, and optimizing investments in research and development in SMEs. The paper is part of a research line that highlights the relevant role of CIOs and the ability of firms’ TAC in Industry 4.0 at micro and meso levels. The study contributes to expanding solutions in the leveraging of disruptive technologies in the digital transformation era.

Economic growth requires investment that can be financed from both domestic and foreign sources and based on domestic and foreign savings, respectively. Developing countries with low savings levels turn to external sources of financing for domestic investment, which has often come with certain risks and limitations. The geopolitical and geo-economic events of recent years, which increased uncertainties, have led to new risks and restrictions on external sources of financing domestic investments, the study of which is important for national economies, including the economy of the Republic of Armenia in terms of readiness and adequate response to challenges. The article attempts to reveal the risks and limitations associated with external sources of financing for investments in the RA, such as foreign direct investment. It was revealed that, although in 2021 global flows of foreign direct investment were restored to their pre-pandemic levels. Such a development did not occur in new industrial projects of developing countries, which also applies to Armenia. It is concluded that the risks and restrictions associated with external sources of financing for domestic investment may create problems for further economic growth of the Republic of Armenia. Improving the competitive position of the RA in terms of attracting FDI during this period of radical restructuring of global supply chains was seen as a way to overcome risks and restrictions by increasing the country's technological absorptive capacity and promoting the formation of new sectors of the economy.

Energy intensity and energy-specific technological progress: A case study in Guangdong province of China

Examining the dynamics of technological progress in determining energy intensity not only helps in assessing the relative strength of contributing factors, but also beneficial in designing effective energy policies. The effect of technology on energy intensity was widely discussed, as a whole, without narrowing down to the energy field and considering the technological absorption capacity as well as the heterogeneity. In view of the importance of sustainability in Guangdong province to the Greater Bay Area, this study focused on energy-specific technological progress and investigated the effect of energy-specific technology on energy intensity using a panel dataset covering cities in Guangdong Province for 2005–2017. The empirical evidence shows that energy-specific technology is beneficial in reducing the energy intensity. However, the energy intensity reduction effect is primarily from energy-saving technology rather than the alternative energy technology. From the sources of energy technology, enterprises, rather than from higher education institutions and independent research institutions, are more effective in cutting the energy intensity. In addition, utility-type energy-specific technology shows a stronger reduction effect on energy intensity compared to creation-type. Finally, the study concludes that technological absorption capacity is an important determinant for the effectiveness of energy-specific technology in reducing energy intensity.
