Climate change, technological innovation, and firm performance

There is substantial evidence that firms are adversely affected by climate risk. At the same time, technological innovations have been fast advancing. It is unknown how much of the negative effect of climate risk is neutralized by the positive effect of country-level technological innovations. Using the global climate risk index (CRI) and the information technology emanated from exports, we examine whether technological innovations can mitigate adverse effects of climate risk on firm performance and investment policy. We interact country-level innovation with CRI for 46 countries over the period of 2011–2018. We find statistically and economically significant evidence supporting the hypothesis that technological innovations mitigate climate risk's adverse effect on firm performance. We attribute this finding to firms that are in high innovation countries, and posit that such firms have more confidence towards the future, thus enabling them to be less concerned about climate risk.

Technological diversification and innovation performance: the moderating effects of organizational slack and ownership in Chinese listed firms

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the impact of technological diversification (TD) on enterprise innovation performance, meanwhile focusing on the moderating effects of various organizational slack (i.e. absorbed and unabsorbed slack) and ownership types (i.e. state-owned or privately-owned) in the context of Chinese listed firms.Design/methodology/approachThis study formulates five hypotheses based on organization and agency theories. Our empirical analysis employs a fixed-effect regression estimator with a unique panel dataset of Chinese-listed manufacturing firms and 13,566 firm-year observations over 9 years from 2012 to 2020.FindingsOur findings show that an inverted U-shaped relationship exists between TD and innovation performance, varying with different types of organizational slack and ownership. In state-owned enterprises (SOEs), unabsorbed slack negatively moderates the inverted U-shaped relationship; however, in privately-owned enterprises (POEs), this relationship is positively moderated. Although absorbed slack has negative moderating effects in both SOEs and POEs, its impact is only significant for POEs.Practical implicationsOur results imply that organizational slack has a contrasting impact on the relationship between TD and innovation performance when the type of ownership varies. Therefore, the managers that intend to achieve optimal innovation performance through TD should understand how organizational slack can be leveraged.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the existing literature by applying the relationship between TD and innovative performance to the transition economy, as well as examining the double-edged sword impact of state ownership on firm innovation performance.

The Mediating Role of Attitudes towards Performing Well between Ethical Leadership, Technological Innovation, and Innovative Performance

The business sector is rife with unethical managerial practices, such as blaming subordinates for organizational failings, along with the exploitation of colleagues, favoritism, and conflicts of leadership. In light of this, numerous researchers have endeavored to explain the phenomenon of ethical perspectives and concerns. It is recommended that organizations in the SME sector adopt ethical practices in order to achieve their long-term objectives. This study stresses the influence of ethical leadership and technological innovation, particularly the mediating role of a positive attitude in encouraging good performance. This study, which was conducted in the SME sector of Malaysia in the state of Selangor, employed a convenience sampling technique for data collection and reports that ethical leadership, technological innovation, and attitude significantly influence performance. A mediating role of attitude in relation to technological innovation and innovative performance is hereby reported, and attitude towards performance was found to have an insignificant effect on ethical leadership and innovative performance. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by explaining the role of ethical leadership and technological innovation in expressing and assessing the revolutionary business practices required to ensure organizational success.

Green Technology Innovation and Enterprise Performance: An Analysis Based on Causal Machine Learning Models

As increasingly stringent environmental regulations are put into effect, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) concepts are being seamlessly integrated into the core of corporate innovation strategies. Due to the quasi-public product perspective of green innovation, the performance of enterprises as a result of green innovation activities exhibits significant heterogeneity. This heterogeneity exists not only between corporate value and financial performance but also among individual enterprises. This paper is based on a sample of 1510 listed Chinese companies examined from 2013 to 2020 and uses machine learning algorithms and quasi-natural experiments to precisely estimate the causal relationship and mechanisms between green innovation and corporate performance. The findings elucidate several critical aspects of green innovation within the corporate sphere: Firstly, rather than attracting green incentives from financial markets, green innovation activities inadvertently stifle the enhancement of corporate value. Secondly, these activities markedly bolster corporate financial performance, primarily by diminishing operational costs, which in turn elevates the return on assets (ROA). Lastly, of all corporate characteristics examined, enterprise size and equity concentration stand out as key determinants influencing the variability in outcomes of green innovation performance. The above findings provide information on the significant implications of enhancing green technology innovation systems and green incentive mechanisms.

Fostering sustainability performance in the Malaysian manufacturing companies: the role of green technology innovation and innovation capabilities

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the influence of green technology innovation on sustainability performance with the moderating effect of innovation capabilities in the Malaysian manufacturing listed companies.Design/methodology/approachThis was a quantitative study and carried out by applying a research survey. The questionnaire was used to collect the data from 204 Malaysian manufacturing companies of the “consumer products and services” sector listed at Bursa Malaysia, incorporating a five-point Likert scale. All the hypothesized relationships were tested by using the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).FindingsThe empirical results showed that the comprehensive adoption of green technology innovation significantly promotes sustainability performance including economic, environmental and social performance. In addition, innovation capabilities significantly and positively moderate the relationship between green technology innovation and sustainability performance.Research limitations/implicationsThe scope of this study is specifically confined to the Malaysian manufacturing listed companies, operating within the consumer products and services sector listed at Bursa Malaysia. Consequently, the findings of this study may not be generalized to manufacturing companies of the different geographical contexts.Practical implicationsThe findings of this study may help the top management and policymakers of the Malaysian manufacturing listed companies to scrutinize green technology innovation and innovation capabilities to achieve higher sustainability performance.Originality/valueThis study magnifies and provides new insights into the extant literature by developing a comprehensive research model that concurrently tests the direct and moderation effects between green technology innovation, innovation capabilities and sustainability performance. Additionally, this is the first study to examine the influence of green technology innovation on sustainability performance with the moderating effect of innovation capabilities in the Malaysian manufacturing listed companies. This distinct approach significantly bolsters the originality of this study.

Analysis of the spatial influences on innovation efficiency of enterprises with different ownership in China: high‐tech industry as an example

AbstractEnterprises have different behavioral characteristics depending on their ownership structure and their nature and play different roles in promoting economic development. In order to explore the innovation behavior characteristics of private enterprises, state‐owned enterprises, Hong Kong‐, Macao‐, and Taiwan‐funded enterprises, and foreign‐funded enterprises in China's high‐tech industry, this paper constructs spatial lag models and varying coefficient spatial lag models within the framework of knowledge production functions. It not only evaluates the technological innovation performance of various types of enterprises in high‐tech industries but also comprehensively explores the differences in the impact of external environments such as spatial dependence and business environment on the innovation efficiency of various types of enterprises. The results of the study provide a reference for enterprise managers and investors to efficiently allocate the scarce resources for innovation investment.

Digital transformation and corporates' green technology innovation performance–The mediating role of knowledge sharing

We analyze the effects of corporate digital transformation on green technology innovation performance by studying data from A-share listed companies from 2012 to 2022. We utilize fixed-effect and mediation-effect models to understand the underlying mechanisms. The results indicate that digital transformation significantly enhances a corporate's green technology innovation performance. Corporates’ knowledge sharing plays a crucial role in mediating the relationship between digital transformation and green technology innovation performance, since digital transformation promotes knowledge sharing and thus improves green technology innovation performance.

Nexus between Corporate Digital Transformation and Green Technological Innovation Performance: The Mediating Role of Optimizing Resource Allocation

Corporate digital transformation, as a key and representational component of the larger digital economy, plays a vital role in furthering both green technological innovation and the transition to a more sustainable economic model. This study collects panel data relating to firms listed on China’s A-share exchanges from 2009 to 2020 and employs textual analysis to estimate the extent of digital transformation within these organizations. It methodically examines the influence of this transformation on the volume and quality of green technological innovations. The findings reveal a substantial enhancement in both the volume and quality of green technological innovations as a result of corporate digital transformation, with a more noticeable improvement in innovation quality. This transition, driven by the mediating function of optimizing resource allocation, facilitates green technological innovation by enhancing human capital composition, curtailing information asymmetry, and augmenting investment in research and development (R&D). Heterogeneity research shows that the influence of digital transformation on green technological innovation is more pronounced in state-owned corporations, low-pollution corporations, and corporations situated in low-carbon pilot cities. Furthermore, this study discovers that the promotive influence of corporate digital transformation tends to diminish with the advancement of the corporation’s lifecycle, peaking during the growth phase. Finally, this study still has some limitations, such as its exclusive focus on Chinese corporations, the need for improvements in the measurement of digital transformation, and potential sample selection biases.

Low-carbon production performance of agricultural green technological innovation: From multiple innovation subject perspective

Green technological innovation displays a multi-subject participation trend; however, within agriculture, literature scarcely addresses its low-carbon production performance and rarely considers citizen participation innovation. Therefore, we examine how agricultural green technological innovation impacts agricultural carbon productivity at production and performance levels, considering university and scientific institution, citizen, or enterprise participation. The results show: (1) Agricultural green technological innovation experienced rapid growth from 2000 to 2019, with enterprise participation innovation having the largest share while citizen participation innovation the lowest share. (2) Agricultural green technological innovation, with enterprises or citizens participation, can effectively enhance agricultural carbon productivity; however, universities and scientific institutions participation innovation remains relatively weak. (3) Citizen and enterprise participation innovation can enhance technical progress and economic growth performance in agriculture, ultimately promoting agricultural carbon productivity. Therefore, we should improve agricultural green technological innovation with various innovation subjects, and promote their allocation efficiency and carbon reduction performance in agricultural production.

Reinforcing green business strategies with Industry 4.0 and governance towards sustainability: Natural‐resource‐based view and dynamic capability

AbstractThe study explores the influence of contextual factors surrounding production planning and green strategic investment decision‐making practices (GSIDMP) in UK companies. We utilize a mixed‐method approach as a research methodology to study the current trend of production planning and GSIDMP. This study's conceptual model is rooted conspicuously in the resource‐based theory (RBT), natural‐resource‐based view, and dynamic capabilities. We empirically examine the nexus among GSIDMP, technological innovation, dynamic capability, and companies' performance. Our study was based on a sample selected from UK‐listed companies, FTSE ALL‐Share Index for the period (2012–2021). Also, the study utilizes data from the UK Innovation Survey (2018–2020) and corporate disclosure through companies' annual reports as a complementary approach for data collection. Findings of this study explore the interdependencies among company dynamic capability, advanced technological innovation and governance mechanisms, and their mediation influence on the nexus between GSIDMP and companies' performance. This study sheds lights on current business innovation strategies. Findings reveal how current practices of production planning and GSIDM in large UK companies shaped by boardrooms absorptive and adaptive capabilities, knowledge‐generating and knowledge‐collaboration capabilities, technological adoption, and corporate governance mechanisms. This study offers insight regarding boardrooms proactive engagement in exploration and exploitation activities to strengthen ambidexterity through various innovation trajectories associated with green production and GSIDMP towards sustainability. We provide managerial implications for decision‐makers, regulators, investors, scholars, and other stakeholders.

The impact of technological innovation on employee performance in Indian IT industry : An empirical study in NCR

The influence of technological innovation on employee performance, especially in India’s National Capital Region (NCR), has not been extensively studied. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between technical innovation, organizational support, and employee performance in the IT business in the National Capital Region (NCR). A quantitative research methodology is employed to gather survey data from 212 IT personnel in NCR, which is further analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis. The study investigated the role of organizational support as a mediator in the relationship between technological innovation and employee performance. The results suggest that technological innovation has a positive and significant impact on employee performance (β= 0.481, P=0.001). Furthermore, the research reveals that organizational support influences the connection between technological innovation and employee performance (β= 0.247, P=0.001), emphasizing the significance of a supportive work environment in amplifying the beneficial effects of technological innovation on employee performance. This study contributes to the existing body of literature by offering empirical data on the correlation between technological innovation and employee performance in the IT industry in the National Capital Region (NCR). The study’s results have practical ramifications for firms in NCR and comparable urban areas, underscoring the significance of allocating resources towards technology advancement and fostering a conducive work atmosphere to enhance employee productivity. The study also emphasizes the necessity for more investigation in this domain to have a more comprehensive understanding of the influence of technology advancement on employee productivity in various settings and sectors.

Financial Technology Innovation and Non-Financial Performance in the Nigerian Banking System

The study investigates the relationship between financial technology innovation and non-financial performance in the Nigerian banking system, with a focus on the complex dynamics of FinTech adoption, the perception of innovation culture, digital security perception, and customer happiness in the Nigerian banking industry. The study used a descriptive survey research technique, with a specific focus on undergraduate students at Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti. The population of the institution consisted of around 7500 students, and a sample size of 380 students was estimated using Taro Yamale’s technique. The reliability study validated the coherence of the self-structured questionnaire, attaining a score of 0.82. The results emphasize the substantial influence of the rate at which Fin Tech is adopted on customer satisfaction inside the banking system of Nigeria. The Chi-Square value of 119.8 and a p-value less than 0.001 suggest a strong statistical relationship, highlighting the significant impact of FinTech adoption on overall customer satisfaction in the Nigerian banking system. Moreover, the research indicates that there is a notable impact of the perception of innovation culture on customer satisfaction within the banking system of Nigeria. This is supported by a Chi-Square value of 113.7 and a p-value below 0.001, indicating a robust statistical correlation. Furthermore, the research highlights a significant impact of Digital Security Perception on Customer Satisfaction in the Nigeria Banking System, as shown by a Chi-Square value of 192.3 and a p-value below 0.001. This highlights the substantial influence of the perception of digital security on influencing the overall level of consumer satisfaction in the Nigerian banking industry. In light of these findings, recommendations for the Nigerian banking sector include enhancing FinTech integration to meet evolving customer needs, cultivating an innovation culture, strengthening digital security measures, implementing regular customer feedback mechanisms, and undertaking educational initiatives to increase customer awareness and understanding. It is essential to implement these ideas in order to create a banking environment that prioritizes the needs of customers and guarantees long-term happiness in the digital age.

4IR 시대 중국 중소수출제조기업의 Green SCM 기술혁신과 지속가능성과 간 관계 연구

Purpose: This paper analyzes the impact of Green SCM technological innovations on corporate sustainability in the 4IR era. Furthermore, it examines the mediating effect of green dynamic capabilities (GDCs) and the moderated mediating effect of government technology support in this process.
 Research design, data, and methodology: F or t his p aper, a s urvey o f s mall a nd medium-sized manufacturing enterprises was conducted in Shandong Province, China, collecting 282 valid data sets. The data were analyzed using SPSS v. 28.0 and the Process Macro v. 3.5 extension program.
 Results: First, green SCM technological innovation significantly enhances GDCs. Second, green SCM technological innovation has a significant positive impact on sustainability. Third, in the relationship between green SCM technological innovation and sustainability performance, GDCs have a significant mediating effect. Lastly, depending on the GDCs, government technology support has a statistically significant moderated mediating effect on the relationship pathway impacting sustainability.
 Conclusions: Implementing innovations in green SCM contributes to the enhancement of an enterprise's GDCs and improves sustainable outcomes. Therefore, small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises should actively incorporate advanced technologies into green SCM to enhance supply chain efficiency while mitigating environmental impacts.

Unleashing Green Innovation in Enterprises: The Transformative Power of Digital Technology Application, Green Human Resource, and Digital Innovation Networks

The rapid development of digital technology has injected new vitality into green technological innovation within manufacturing enterprises. Proper application of digital technology during the innovation process can propel global sustainable development. Using Chinese publicly traded manufacturing firms as a sample, this study employed a constructed digital technology innovation network and OLS models to unveil the mechanisms through which digital technology application affects green technological innovation. This research reveals a significant positive impact of the breadth and depth of digital technology applications on companies’ green technological innovation performance. Green human resource allocation serves as an intermediary in this relationship. Furthermore, the embeddedness and structural embeddedness of the digital technology innovation network play a significantly positive moderating role in the relationship between digital technology applications and green human resource allocation. This discovery provides a theoretical foundation for how companies can harness digital technology to promote green innovation within China’s digital strategy. It aids manufacturing enterprises in optimizing digital technology applications, improving green human resource allocation, and facilitating the development of digital technology innovation networks, advancing more sustainable development and contributing to global environmental goals.

Green knowledge management: A key driver of green technology innovation and sustainable performance in the construction organizations

The primary objective of this research is to examine the effects of green knowledge management (GKM) on green technological innovation (GTI) and sustainable performance in construction firms. The study also investigates the role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a moderator of the relationship between GKM and green human capital (GHC). A survey questionnaire was used to obtain data from 309 construction firms in Pakistan, and the AMOS-24 and SPSS PROCESS macro software packages were used to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that GKM had significant positive impacts on GTI and long-term performance. Aspects of GIC (e.g., green structural capital, green relational capital, and green human capital) were found to be significant mediators of GKM and GTI interactions and correlations between GKM and sustainable performance. Furthermore, the study showed that AI significantly influenced the relationship between GKM and GHC. The study's findings have important theoretical and practical implications for organizations and governments. The study theoretically contributes to the knowledge-based view of the firm by providing empirical evidence of the role of various GIC characteristics as mediators in the interactions between GKM, GTI, and sustainable performance. In practice, the findings suggest that firms can improve GTI and sustainable performance by investing in GKM and GIC.

Relating the strategic role of technology orientation in organizational TQM performance

The importance of incorporating cutting-edge technological strategies to support business ecosystem development is growing across industries. By examining the relationship between organisational Total Quality Management (TQM) performance and the indicators of technology orientation, this study aims to fill the knowledge gap caused by insufficient empirical research on the characteristics of technology orientation. This study evaluates a unique conceptual framework using survey data from 254 IT manufacturing companies in India, utilising a two-staged structural equation modelling and artificial neural network methodology. The study developed hypotheses on TQM organisational performance through the literature on technology orientation to determine the correlations between these indicators. The findings highlight how enterprises that commit to adopting new technologies can enhance technological innovation to become more resourceful and creative and increase organisational TQM performance. The sensitivity analysis results showed that technology adoption significantly impacts organisational TQM performance. The novelty of this study contributes to the literature on organisation TQM performance by providing a deeper understanding of relevant technology orientation indicators and how organisations should use them to achieve superior performance. The results show that technology acceptance strategy, capability, infrastructure, innovation, and adoption benefit organisational TQM performance.

Empowering Decision Support System and Social Change: 'Leadership as the Change Agent'—Investigating the Mediating Role of Information Management Culture in Technological Innovation and Socioeconomic Development as Moderation

In contemporary business settings, the ability to sustain a competitive advantage is contingent upon two pivotal factors: organizational performance and technological innovation. Comprehending the determinants that propel these results is imperative for achieving success within an organization. The objective of this investigation is to scrutinize the interconnections among decision-making autonomy, leadership style, change readiness, and information management culture, and their effects on both organizational performance and technological innovation. Furthermore, the research investigates the intermediary function of information management culture and the moderating impact of socioeconomic development. The present investigation employs a quantitative research methodology utilizing a cross-sectional design. The study utilizes a purposive sampling method to choose a sample of 430 bank employees from diverse banks in China. A survey instrument is employed to assess the variables of interest, which have been derived from prior research. The study's results indicate that the level of decision-making autonomy has a noteworthy and favorable influence on both the performance of an organization and its technological innovation. The study reveals that change readiness has a noteworthy and favorable influence on the performance of an organization. Additionally, the culture of information management displays a significant and positive correlation with both technological innovation and organizational performance. The research also highlights the role of information management culture as an intermediary factor that influences the relationship between decision-making autonomy and both organizational performance and technological innovation. Additionally, the study reveals the moderating impact of socioeconomic development on the correlation between information management culture and organizational performance.

The knowledge linkage between science and technology influences corporate technological innovation: Evidence from scientific publications and patents

Scientific knowledge has been shown to be a key contributor to corporate technological innovation; hence, modern inventive firms place a strong emphasis on scientific research. However, little is known about how the knowledge linkage between science and technology (ST linkage) of corporations fosters their technological innovation. In an effort to fill this vacuum in the literature, we investigate how multiple properties of ST linkage influence corporate technological innovation. We conducted a Zero-inflated Negative Binomial regression using scientific publications, patents, and firm-level data from 671 pharmaceutical and 686 semiconductor corporations to test our hypotheses. We find that the higher the proportion of corporations citing their published scientific publications in patents, the more likely they are to produce more patents, and corporate technological innovation benefits from the utilization of scientific knowledge produced in the early stages. Furthermore, the positive effects of the aforementioned factors on the technological innovation performance of corporations are present in both scientific research strategies (e.g., independent vs. joint research). These findings contribute to the understanding of the underlying mechanism of corporate basic research facilitating technological innovation. This study also provides meaningful advice regarding how corporations can enhance their technological innovation through scientific research.

Top management team social capital, digital technology and enterprise innovation performance

ABSTRACT Top management team (TMT) social capital plays an important role in obtaining innovation resources and improving enterprise innovation performance (EIP). However, there are few literatures on the impact of different dimensions of TMT social capital on EIP, especially in the digital era. Taking the listed companies disclosed by Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2008–2019 as samples, based on resource-based view and social network theory, a moderated mediation model is constructed. This paper examines the mechanism of TMT social capital affecting EIP, the mediating role of digital technology and the moderating role of network position. The results show that, TMT overseas capital and academic capital have significant positive effects on EIP; digital technology mediates the relationship between overseas capital, academic capital and EIP; network position moderates the relationship between academic capital and digital technology. Furthermore, the mediating role of digital technology in the relationship between academic capital and EIP is moderated by network position. The research conclusion enriches the research on TMT social capital, digital technology and EIP, and provides helpful guidance for enterprises to make full use of TMT social capital to manage digital technology and improve EIP.
