Spatial Pattern of Technological Innovation in the Yangtze River Delta Region and Its Impact on Water Pollution.

The impact of technological innovation on water pollution is an important parameter to determine and monitor while promoting and furthering a region’s economic development. Here, exploratory spatial data analysis was used to analyze: the spatial patterns of technological innovation and water pollution in the Yangtze River, the changes in technical innovation and the resulting changes in water pollution, and the impact of technological innovation on water pollution. The following major inferences were drawn from the obtained results: (1) The spatial pattern of innovation input has a single-center structure that tends to spread. The patent innovation output has evolved, from a single spatial pattern with Shanghai as the core to a diffusion structure with three cores-Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Nanjing. (2) The aggregation mode of water pollution has evolved from the original “Z” mode to a new mode of core agglomeration, and water pollution is constantly being reduced. (3) The trends of change in patent innovation output and innovation input are roughly the same, while the trends of both and that of water pollution are contrary to each other. (4) The correlations between innovation input, patented innovation output, and water pollution are relatively low. From the perspective of spatial distribution, the number of cities with medium and high levels of gray correlation with water pollution is the same.

Dynamic patterns of technological innovation in magnesium alloys in the Korean automotive industry

Materials innovation is an important factor for industrial competitiveness and success. This study investigates materials innovation from organisational and technological perspectives, in the case of magnesium alloys in the Korean automotive industry. The patent citation network (2003-2014; Korean Intellectual Property Office) was employed, and centrality analysis and block modelling were performed: 1) organisational perspective: the demand from automotive organisations decreased over the timeframe examined, while the demand and supply from knowledge providers and materials organisations increased. The connections between automotive organisations and the other organisations decreased, while the connections between materials organisations and knowledge providers increased; 2) technological perspective: the role of materials technologies reduced, while the role of automotive technologies increased. There was a decrease in connections among materials technologies, and an increase in connections among automotive technologies. We relate these results to industry and policy changes in the Korean materials industry.

Internet access standards: dissemination of the Integrated Services Digital Network in Spain, 1984-2005

This article aims to narrate the birth and evolution of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) in Spain with an essentially descriptive methodology, from an interdisciplinary perspective and from varied sources. The study aims to investigate the forms of the transition from a conceptual or engineering phase to the market in a standard of Internet access and, at the same time, in the different patterns of technological innovation and the factors that motivate them. It tries to verify if the own nature of the techniques, the degree of diffusion of the previous technologies, the technological level -digitalization- and the structure of market of the telecommunications — continued existence of the monopoly of the historical operator National Telephone Company of Spain — had a significant impact on the inequality of penetration with respect to other countries. The research authorizes to conclude that a very heterogeneous combination of factors caused that leading countries in the diffusion of a technology did not achieve that leading role in the diffusion of other technologies.

The Empirical Investigation of Non-Linear Dynamics in the Social World. Ontology, Methodology and Data

Across much of social science, linear models hold sway, but they have significant limitations. This article makes the case for studying social processes as co-evolving systems, involving non-linear dynamics. Co-evolution of species in the natural world is a blind process. In the social world in contrast, purposeful interventions by social actors are omnipresent, in their struggles for positional advantage. The article brings together co-evolving networks and purposeful social action in the Contingent Historical Model. We seek to apply this model in ways that engage with both scholarly and policy concerns. If such investigations are to be fruitful, they must not only be elaborated theoretically, they must also be applied to empirical datasets. This article considers how this can be done, with what sorts of data sets and what forms of data analysis. It takes as its specific example the international datasets on patents, as revealing processes and patterns of technological innovation. It shows how such an approach can illuminate scholarly debates and develop indicators for policy makers. Finally, it offers an agenda for research into dynamic co-evolving systems across other empirical areas.

Analysis on the innovation pattern by major industry in Korea

Purpose - This paper aims to analyze the difference of technological innovative pattern by industry. Research design and methodology - we try to identify the major factors which can exert an effective influence on actual innovation output, utilizing the result of Korean Innovation Survey. By doing so, this work can make a comparison with Pavitt (1984) and succeeding discussion on sectoral pattern of innovation Results - Analysis on major industry in Korea shows that there are substantial differences in terms of the source of innovation, organization-related factor, and appropriation mechanism among each industry, and differential strategy to be proper for the nature of each industry is needed. There is some variation within industries which deemed as same type of sector defined by Pavitt. Conclusions - This analysis call for elaborate analysis on sectoral pattern of innovation, considering the change and difference of innovative environment as well as differential business strategy and way to do innovate, which is proper considering the nature of innovative pattern in each industry for successful technological innovation in Korea. At the same time, proper policy measure considering the differential pattern of technological innovation is needed.

Distribuição das patentes municipais do sul do Brasil: uma análise espacial, com ênfase nos efeitos locais

Este trabalho analisa a distribuição espacial das patentes municipais entre os municípios do sul do Brasil, investigando um possível processo de convergência no período 2001-2014. Para isso, utilizaram-se a análise exploratória de dados espaciais, a econometria espacial e a regressão ponderada geograficamente. Como corolário, a distribuição de patentes não apresentou aleatoriedade espacial, evidenciando um padrão de concentração espacial das inovações, o qual se intensificou no decorrer dos anos. Ademais, constatou-se a existência de um processo de homogeneização na distribuição de patentes, especialmente no entorno daqueles municípios que já detinham inicialmente um alto grau de inovação, confirmando uma tendência de convergência.

Repertoires of statecraft: instruments and logics of power politics

Issues involving ‘statecraft’ lie at the heart of most major debates about world politics, yet scholars do not go far enough in analyzing how the processes of statecraft themselves can reshape the international system. We draw on the growing relational-processual literature in international relations theory to explore how different modes of statecraft can help create and refashion the structure of world politics. In particular, we argue that scholars should reconceive statecraft in terms of repertoires. An emphasis on repertoires sheds light on a number of issues, including how statecraft influences patterns of technological innovation, the construction of institutional and normative orders, and the pathways through which states mobilize power in world politics.

Technological innovation strategy: how do technology life cycles change by technological area

ABSTRACT Discussions on the patterns of technological innovation have significant implications in terms of the efficient distribution of national R&D resources and the establishment of corporate managerial strategies. This study is focused on calculating and analysing technology cycle time (TCT) by technological area based on patent data that can be used as easily accessible objective indicators for the purpose of modelling the patterns of technological innovation by period and technological area. The main technological areas handled by the study include medical science, vehicles, metallurgy, and computing. Of the patent data registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office from 1990 to 2014, International Patent Classification sub-class codes representing each technological area were selected to collect patent data, and to generate TCT statistics every five years. The TCT statistics generated is interpreted as the technological life cycle, to be used in modelling technological innovation patterns individualised by technology and period.

Varieties of capitalism's theory of innovation and a conceptual integration with leadership-oriented executives: the relation between typologies of executive, technological and socioeconomic performances

The economic literature suggests several approaches to explain the differences of technological performances among nations, such as the varieties of capitalism's theory of innovation. However, the relation between typologies of executive and technological performances of countries is generally absent in current frameworks. Results of the study here show that high levels of technological performance of nations seem to be associated to executive with parliamentary monarchy and monarchy (leadership-oriented governments), whereas nations with mixed executive tend to have lower technological performances. A possible reason of these results is that, in general, some typologies of executive leadership-oriented (e.g., monarchy) support the political stability of countries with subsequent socioeconomic developmental paths over the long run. Overall, then, this study shows that the structure of executives can be one of contributing factors that explains dissimilar patterns of technological innovation and socioeconomic growth of nations over time.

Patterns of Technological Innovation: A Comparative Analysis between Low-tech and High-tech Industries in Brazil

This paper is intended to contribute to the knowledge about the patterns of innovations in different economic sectors. Hence, the general objective is to assess the differences in rates, directions, sources and efforts of innovations between low-tech and high-tech industries in Brazil. The analysis is based on the database of a survey on innovation (PINTEC) conducted by IBGE. The sample includes 8,578 innovative Brazilian companies surveyed from selected low-tech industries (food and textiles manufactures) and high-tech industries (vehicles and electronics industries). Descriptive and factorial correspondence analysis were used to identify the variables regarding rates, directions, sources and efforts of innovation that discriminate the low-tech industries of high-tech. The results confirm that low-tech industries differ from high tech ones in all pattern of innovations dimensions analyzed. Hence, low tech industries, compared to high-tech ones, are less innovative, innovate more in process, have fewer people dedicated to RD, present suppliers as the most significant source of information and is a larger user of Government funding for the purchase of machinery and equipment. On the other hand, the high-tech industries are more innovative, innovate more in products, have more people dedicated to RD, search for information of other groups of companies, customers and competitors, and their larger use of public financing is for investing in RD.

Unraveling the technological innovation pattern of China’s aerospace: synergy innovation

Purpose – This paper aims to unravel the technological innovation pattern in China’s aerospace industry. The technological innovation pattern of China’s aerospace industry is identified and its theoretical foundation, structure, philosophy, formation and effects on the development of China’s aerospace industry are explored. Design/methodology/approach – First, the theoretical foundation of synergy innovation of China’s aerospace industry is reviewed to further identify the technological innovation pattern. Second, Chinese ancient philosophy (dialectical thinking) is used to explain the structure and process of synergy innovation in China’s aerospace industry. Third, the formation process of synergy innovation is introduced, and, finally, the effects of synergy innovation are discussed. Findings – The technological innovation pattern of China’s aerospace industry has undergone an evolutionary process. During this process, China’s aerospace firms have formed a unique technological innovation pattern, synergy innovation, under China’s special political and economic background. The synergy innovation has three characteristics, including original, integrated and application-based. The synergy innovation pattern application is one of the most important reasons behind the great achievements of China’s aerospace industry. Originality/value – A unique technological innovation pattern, synergy innovation, is proposed for the first time. A new perspective for understanding innovation is provided by applying the Chinese dialectical thinking to decipher the philosophy of the technological innovation pattern. Based on this, this paper suggests that China’s aerospace industry should follow the situation and apply the synergy innovation pattern to achieve development and growth. This paper also illustrates a multi-method approach and emphasizes the different levels of organizing for innovation.

A network analysis using metadata to investigate innovation in clean-tech – Implications for energy policy

Clean-technology (clean-tech) is a large and increasing sector. Research and development (R&D) is the lifeline of the industry and innovation is fostered by a plethora of high-tech start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Any empirical-based attempt to detect the pattern of technological innovation in the industry is challenging. This paper proposes an investigation of innovation in clean-tech using metadata provided by CrunchBase. Metadata reveal information on markets, products, services and technologies driving innovation in the clean-tech industry worldwide and for San Francisco, the leader in clean-tech innovation with more than two hundred specialised companies. A network analysis using metadata is the employed methodology and the main metrics of the resulting networks are discussed from an economic point of view. The purpose of the paper is to understand specifically specializations and technological complementarities underlying innovative companies, detect emerging industrial clusters at the global and local/metropolitan level and, finally, suggest a way to realize whether observed start-ups, SMEs and clusters follow a technological path of complementary innovation and market opportunity or, instead, present a risk of lock-in. The discussion of the results of the network analysis shows interesting implications for energy policy, particularly useful from an operational point of view.

Religious culture, democratisation and patterns of technological innovation

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the interaction among technological innovation, democratisation and predominant religious culture of countries, as well as some critical socio-economic determinants of technological outputs. The findings show that countries with a predominance of the Protestant, Jewish and Eastern religions have technological performance higher than countries with other predominant religious cultures. In addition, the statistical evidence, in general, confirms de facto the hypothesis that higher religious fractionalisation, ceteris paribus , may support innovative outputs, in particular among the richer and more democratic countries, which are mainly located in the European and North-American geo-economic areas.

Perfil innovador de la industria manufacturera colombiana. Caso del sector metalmecánico de Barranquilla

This article shows the results of the study “Patterns of technological innovation in Colombian manufacturing. The case of Metal Mechanics Sector in Barranquilla.” The article begins with a detailed review of the international literature to define the variables or indicators of the study; then it shows the results of a factor and cluster analysis, which indicate the existence of three groups of enterprises with innovation patterns defined according to its degree or level of innovation commitment: high, medium or low. Additionally, it is developed a structural analysis to de­termine causal relationships between those factors. With the results the authors builds an analysis model and an innovative profile as a model for Colombian manufacturing companies. These results are accompanied by a set of proposed strategies and actions aimed at the enterprises capacities strengthening in terms of their innovative effort.

Climbing quality ladders and the evolution of technology dynamics: rethinking the role of demand in technological change

The current paper analyses how the information gathering capabilities of consumers affect the patterns of technological innovation, establishing an explicit link among market demand, firms and the evolution of technology dynamics. We examine the effects that different decision theoretical driven demand structures may have on the incentives of firms to signal the existence of and introduce technologically superior products. We illustrate how the generation of technological niche markets depends on the ability of decision makers to reverse their information gathering processes and compare the goods observed in different markets before making a choice. In addition, we obtain equilibrium situations where the introduction of technologically superior products and subsequent generation of niche markets, i.e., climbing the technological quality ladder, is suboptimal for the signalling firm. Further, numerical simulations are introduced to illustrate the theoretical results obtained.

Socio-cultural origins of the patterns of technological innovation: What is the likely interaction among religious culture, religious plurality and innovation? Towards a theory of socio-cultural drivers of the patterns of technological innovation

Religion shapes people's attitude of mind, education, culture and institutions of countries and likely is a main socio-cultural determinant of the patterns of technological innovation. This study analyses the process of technological innovation exploring the predominant religious culture of countries and tests the hypothesis that a higher religious plurality, a main proxy of cultural diversity, the higher the technological outputs in advanced economies. The findings show that, on average, societies with a predominance of the Protestant, Jewish and Eastern religions tend to have technological performance higher than societies with other predominant religious cultures. In addition, the statistical evidence supports de facto the hypothesis that a higher religious fractionalization, ceteris paribus, has a positive effect on technological outputs. This appears to be particularly true among richer and more democratic countries, which are mainly located in the European and North-American geo-economic areas. Further discussion is needed to understand true causality for developing a socio-economic theory of the origins of patterns of technological innovation.
