The impact of technological innovation on employee performance in Indian IT industry : An empirical study in NCR

The influence of technological innovation on employee performance, especially in India’s National Capital Region (NCR), has not been extensively studied. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between technical innovation, organizational support, and employee performance in the IT business in the National Capital Region (NCR). A quantitative research methodology is employed to gather survey data from 212 IT personnel in NCR, which is further analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis. The study investigated the role of organizational support as a mediator in the relationship between technological innovation and employee performance. The results suggest that technological innovation has a positive and significant impact on employee performance (β= 0.481, P=0.001). Furthermore, the research reveals that organizational support influences the connection between technological innovation and employee performance (β= 0.247, P=0.001), emphasizing the significance of a supportive work environment in amplifying the beneficial effects of technological innovation on employee performance. This study contributes to the existing body of literature by offering empirical data on the correlation between technological innovation and employee performance in the IT industry in the National Capital Region (NCR). The study’s results have practical ramifications for firms in NCR and comparable urban areas, underscoring the significance of allocating resources towards technology advancement and fostering a conducive work atmosphere to enhance employee productivity. The study also emphasizes the necessity for more investigation in this domain to have a more comprehensive understanding of the influence of technology advancement on employee productivity in various settings and sectors.

Returnee firms, R&D input and innovation performance: critical roles of political and economic stakeholders

PurposeAlthough the role of returnees is critical to firm innovation, the literature offers inconsistent findings regarding returnees' effect on firms' innovation performance. To reconcile this issue, the authors argue that taking the types of innovation into account – i.e. technical innovation and commercial innovation – is necessary. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine how firms led by returnees affect the relationship between research and development (R&D) input and above two types of innovation output, as well as the contingent role of political connections (PCs) and venture capital funding (VC funding).Design/methodology/approachThis study empirically tested the hypotheses using a dataset of 54,617 firm-year observations for 18,475 Chinese firms in Zhongguancun Science Park (ZSP) from 2009 to 2014.FindingsThe results show that the positive effect of R&D input on technical innovation performance (TIP) is reinforced when firms are led by returnees, while the positive effect of R&D input on commercial innovation performance (CIP) is weakened when firms are led by returnees compared with those firms led by the local counterparts. The findings further show that returnee firms' positive effect on the relationship between R&D input and technical innovation performance is more salient for firms with more PCs but weakened for those with more VC funding.Originality/valueThis study enriches the research on returnee firms' advantages and disadvantages in transforming R&D input into innovation performance, and the findings highlight that firms led by returnees can increase R&D efficiency of technical innovation, but reduce R&D efficiency of commercial innovation. Moreover, this study offers a contingent view of political and economic stakeholders' roles in returnee firms' innovation, by revealing PCs help returnee firms to enhance R&D efficiency in technological innovation, while venture capital can hamper such R&D efficiency.

Boundary spanning strategy and tacit knowledge recombination: Analysis of joint‐patent networks of patent‐intensive firms

AbstractThis paper collects 103 sample firms' 2015 to 2019 data through data envelopment analysis to measure their technical innovation performance and social network analysis to build joint‐patent networks and explore knowledge‐creating alliance relationships. The article highlights how tacit knowledge recombination works as a mechanism of boundary spanning. It emphasizes the significance of strategic balancing networks' position to improve technical innovation performance and competitiveness of patent‐intensive (PI) firms. This research contributes to shedding additional light on the nature of the boundary‐spanning mechanism and PI firms' knowledge exchanges. Specifically, it examines how balancing boundaries spanning through joint‐patent networks can influence the processes of tacit knowledge transmission and recombination between knowledge‐based actors.

Technical founders, digital transformation and corporate technological innovation: empirical evidence from listed companies in China’s STAR market

AbstractTechnology entrepreneurship and corporate innovation are important for the development of indigenous innovation. In the digital age, founders are subject to fundamental changes in their strategy choices, which in turn affect corporate innovation performance. This paper aims to explore the strategic choices adopted by technical founders of listed companies in China’s STAR market to reap the rewards of innovation in a digital context. Based on the annual reports of 124 listed companies in China’s STAR Market, this paper applies machine learning methods to quantify digital transformation of enterprises, and empirically analyzes the relationship between technical founders and innovation performance by constructing a moderated mediating model. Our results show that companies with technical founders are more likely to adopt digital transformation and thus show better innovation performance. In terms of heterogeneity, the empirical results demonstrate that firms with technical founders show better performance in digital transformation, followed in turn by those with business founders and academic founders. Both the positive relationship between enterprise digital transformation and innovation performance and the mediating effect of digital transformation are positively moderated by venture capital or private equity support. The findings reveal the microscopic mechanism of the role of technology-based founders on corporate innovation performance and hence have practical implications for promoting corporate digital transformation and enhancing firm technological innovation.

With the continuous development of my country's economy and society, how to effectively evaluate the technical innovation performance of agricultural enterprises has become the focus of research. This paper firstly processes and analyzes the technical innovation performance data of agricultural enterprises, and then processes and converts the technical innovation performance data of agricultural enterprises; then, through the analysis of the technical innovation performance data of agricultural enterprises, the key characteristics of the technical innovation performance of agricultural enterprises are excavated. Finally, a performance evaluation model based on agricultural enterprise technology innovation is proposed, and the validity of the model is verified with examples.

The effect of knowledge management capacity on firm performance through sequential mediations of strategic HRM, administrative and technical innovations

Purpose This study aims to explore the relationship between knowledge management (KM) and firm performance through mediating effects of strategic human resource management (HRM) and organizational innovations. Design/methodology/approach Usable responses from 638 employees belonging to 230 organizations operating in India were collected via questionnaires. To determine the hypothesized relationships between the study variables, namely, KM capacity, strategic HRM, administrative innovation, technical innovation and firm performance, bootstrapping method via PROCESS was put into use. Findings The findings strengthen the notion that effective KM in firms leads to better innovation capabilities and higher firm performance. Further, the study reveals that the effects of KM capacity on firm performance go through a relationship chain (serial mediation) consisting of strategic HRM, administrative innovation and technical innovation. Practical implications The results undeniably infer that the effective management of knowledge is critical for leveraging innovations and other performance indicators in organizations. More specifically, it does not only result in enhanced firm performance but also in proper utilization of strategic HR practices for the benefits of employees, with a boost in administrative and technical innovations in organizations. Originality/value By confirming several mediation paths through strategic HRM, administrative and technical innovations, this study offers some noteworthy insights in expounding the relationship between KM and firm performance.

How to Improve The Competitiveness of Palm Sugar? The Role of Technical Innovation

One of the causes of the low competitiveness of palm sugar MSMEs to enter the modern and export market is the low quality of products. The product’s low quality is caused by the low technology which is used in the palm sugar’s production process. Therefore,a research is needed to analyze the influence of technical innovation on the marketing performance of palm sugar MSMEs. Respondents of this research were the owners of Palm Sugar MSMEs in Banyumas Regency. Data were collected using questionnaires, in-depth interviews, observation, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Based on the analysis using mediation regression analysis with causal step method, it is obtained that the results of technical innovation has a positive influence on competitive advantage and marketing performance. Furthermore, competitive advantage mediates the relationship between technical innovation and marketing performance. Based on the results of the research,some recommendations are formulated; the palm sugar MSMEs need to make technical innovations at the stages of penderesan or collecting, processing and packaging technology in palm sugar production.

Entrepreneurship, Absorptive Capacity, Technical Capability and Innovation Performance

The objectives of this study are three-fold. First, it examines the relationship between entrepreneurship and absorptive capacity after which it explores the influence of absorptive capacity with technical capability. Finally, it looks into the mediated effect of realized absorptive capacity and the relationship between potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity. Surveys on Chinese companies through the Internet and Smart PLS were utilized and the research model was analyzed. In summary, results showed that the positive impact of entrepreneurship on potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity is significant. Second, the potential absorptive capacity improves technical capability while the direct effect on innovation performance is not statistically significant but it improves the innovation performance positively through the mediating effect of realized absorptive capacity. Third, realized absorptive ability positively improves a company’s technical capacity and innovation performance.

Technical and Operational Innovations approaches to firm performance of SMEs auto services sector

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework to help SMEs auto service providers appreciate the critical contribution of innovations (technical and operational) to their performance. Specifically, the study examines the direct relationship between technical innovation and firm performance and the mediating role of operational innovation in the relationship. Participants of the study were drawn from the SMEs auto service provider in Kumasi, Ghana. Multiple regression analysis was performed to estimate the direct relationship and the mediating effects. In all, 180 questionnaires were used for the analysis after performing data screening. The results demonstrate that there is a statistically significant relationship between technical innovation and firm performance. Operational innovation was also found to mediate the relationship between technical innovation and firm performance. The study assumed that information regarding the operations of the participants is complete and that participants were selected based on willingness to participate. It is recommended for future researchers to explore other avenues of the subject matter to develop a standardised pattern of operations in the SMEs auto service sector.

Wellsite serviced power model for the CSG industry

CD Power (CDP) was challenged by a coal seam gas (CSG) operator to develop a wellsite power supply solution that would lower the operators running costs ($/kWh) whilst improving availability from low 90% to above 97% power availability. Furthermore, the operator sought a supply, install and maintain approach – resulting in a cheaper, more reliable outsourced energy solution. Typically, energy supply to wellsites in Australia consists of expensive inflexible and slow to install high voltage (HV) cable reticulated to each well. As wellsites deplete, these HV cables cannot be rerouted, resulting in expensive loss of capital. These limitations prompted operators to seek a highly mobile and cost focussed solution. CDP was contracted to deliver an innovative program of power solutions for a major CSG operator at 50 wellsites in 2017. The contract is to design, manufacture, install and maintain mobile 3-phase power supply units for wellsites. These units are powered by gas reciprocating engine generators and solar battery modules with synchronising switchboards. The full wellsite serviced power contracting model is a first of its kind for the CSG industry and is based on delivering high power availability and collaborative field service performance. CDP anticipates that providing a high level of technical innovation and superior performance, they will see the model extended across the industry and challenge the traditional economics around HV wellsite power. This paper will address the challenges faced in moving from a traditional segregated power model to a performance-based model at a time when the power industry is surrounded by innovation.

R&D strategy and innovation performance: the role of standardization

ABSTRACTFirms now increasingly recognise the important role of R&D strategy in building technological advantage. However, few attempts have linked standardisation with specific R&D strategies in explaining innovation performance. To bridge this gap, this study empirically examines the relationships between R&D strategies, standardisation, and firms’ innovation performance. Based on a sample of 371 firms in China, we use structural equation modelling (SEM) and find that novelty-oriented R&D strategy generates greater accumulation of standardisation knowledge and standards diversity, while R&D openness only positively relates to this standardisation knowledge accumulation. Moreover, standardisation knowledge accumulation is positively related to both administrative and technical innovation performance, while a greater variety of standards only leads to higher administrative innovativeness. More importantly, our results reveal that accumulation of standardisation knowledge mediates the relationships between R&D novelty and administrative and technical innovation performances. Both the theoretical and practical implications that arise from these findings are discussed.

Domain‐Relevant Commitment and Individual Technical Innovation Performance

Individual innovators play a critical organizational role in that they generate and often champion technology and product ideas. Amidst an ongoing stream of organizational and team innovation research, few empirical studies focus on differences in individual innovation performance despite the importance of the individual innovator to a firm's innovation efforts. Based on goal commitment theory, we introduce a new domain‐relevant commitment construct and develop a conceptualization of conditional indirect effects. Our model suggests that relevant individual abilities enhance commitment to technical innovation and innovation performance while also insulating against the impact of situational variables, making employees' commitment to innovation performance less dependent upon context. Hypotheses are tested using two sources of data and a sample of 339 R&D professionals from a Fortune 100 industrial firm. Results suggest that commitment to innovation is a key motivational factor in explaining individual technical innovation performance. Situational characteristics impact motivation differently for individuals with lower vs. higher ability levels, even in this context in which truly low‐ability individuals, in the absolute sense, have been screened out by the employment selection process. The relationship between commitment and innovation performance is strengthened by higher levels of individual ability.

Does organizational innovation moderate technical innovation directly or indirectly?

ABSTRACTWe find a divergence in the literature regarding the treatment of how organizational innovation affects innovation and performance. One point of view suggests that organizational innovation impacts performance only, while the other suggests that it impacts technical innovation and firm performance. We use the framework of Crepon-Duguet-Mairesse (CDM) to control for endogeneity; we also use two different measures for organizational innovation. Our contributions to the literature are: the CDM framework in this context is novel; prior research either did not/could not control for endogeneity whereas the CDM framework mitigates this. To discriminate between the direct and indirect approach, we implemented AIC and BIC tests. We find that for the innovation equations in all cases and regardless of which organizational innovation variable is used the direct model is preferable. In contrast, for the productivity equations, we find that in all cases the indirect model is preferable. Thus we do not have a definitive statistical test for which model is superior. Yet, it is our contention that organizational innovation is a new routine within the firm that should impact technical innovation. Furthermore, organizational design theories deduce that organizational innovation should impact technical innovation-implying that the direct model is indeed preferable.

Industry technical committees, technological distance, and innovation performance

In most technology-based markets, industry technical committees (TCs) that establish new technical standards and specifications have assumed importance for companies as a critical source of information on existing and emerging technologies. In this study, we investigate how the technological distance of a TC from the firm will shape the impact of TC participation on the firm's innovation performance. Specifically, we posit that participation in TCs that are central (low technological distance) to the company's existing product technologies and offerings will contribute to its competence-enhancing innovation whereas participation in TCs that are peripheral (high technological distance) to current technologies and offerings will contribute to its new-competence innovation. Given the need to interpret and apply the information internally, we also consider the moderating effects of the firm's absorptive capacity and knowledge integration mechanisms. The study hypotheses are validated by combining survey-based and archival data related to a sample of 168 US-based wireless telecommunication firms. The findings provide broad support for the study theses and imply the need for companies to carefully plan the nature of their TC participation so as to advance the desired type of innovation. Broader implications for future research on external knowledge sourcing and competence-based innovation are discussed.

Harvesting organizational knowledge and innovation practices

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of organizational knowledge and innovation practices on the outcomes of operations strategy.Design/methodology/approachThe study employs a survey‐based method to test a theoretically grounded set of hypotheses using regression techniques.FindingsThe results indicate that cost, quality, delivery and flexibility outcomes are influenced by specific organizational knowledge and innovation practices. Also, the findings show that innovation performance mediate the relationship between knowledge practices and operations strategy.Practical implicationsAcquiring knowledge is not enough. Managers need to facilitate dynamics of knowledge sharing and utilization to cultivate a better level of technical and administrative innovation performance, which in turn will result in favourable operations strategy outcomes.Originality/valueThe paper is one of the first studies that highlight knowledge and innovation practices in relation to operations strategy in one study applied to a developing country context.

Linking operations performance to knowledge management capability: the mediating role of innovation performance

The ability of an organisation to efficiently and effectively operate in a competitive environment hinges to a large extent on its knowledge capability and innovation performance. Thus, the main goal of our study is to examine this link by means of regression analysis in a sample of 124 firms. The results indicate that knowledge management capability is positively related to innovation performance which, in turn, has a positive effect on operations performance. The findings provide evidence that innovation performance plays a mediating role between knowledge management capability and operations performance. Therefore, managers need to facilitate dynamics of knowledge acquisition, sharing and application, and then utilise it to cultivate a better level of technical and administrative innovation performance, which in turn will result in favourable operations performance. The article concludes with implications and directions for future research.

The mediating effect of knowledge management on social interaction and innovation performance

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of knowledge management in the relationship between social interaction and innovation performance.Design/methodology/approachThe population in the study is the Taiwanese firms listed in the China Credit Information Service Incorporation. A stratified random sampling method was used to select 176 firms in Taiwan. The usable response rate was 23.47 per cent. The study employed LISREL to test the hypothesized relationships in the path‐analytic framework.FindingsThe results indicate that social interaction is positively related to knowledge management. Knowledge management is, in turn, positively related to administrative and technical innovation performance. Further, the results provide evidence that knowledge management plays a mediating role between social interaction and innovation performance.Originality/valueThe study highlights the importance of social interaction and knowledge management in the process of innovation, and helps scholars and managers to better understand the mediator of knowledge management through which social interaction benefits innovation performance.
