TC-25: The Latest Activities of Technical Committee on Biological and Medical Measurements

The Technical Committee on Biological and Medical Measurements (TC-25) aims at establishing, developing, promoting and supporting the cooperation among researchers in the different fields of biological and medical measurements. Sensors for the measurement of clinical and/or biological parameters, instrument and procedure characterization, instrument interoperability and interconnection, and data processing are some of the topics of interest to the TC-25. To those aims, the technical committee designs and realizes joint activities, like study groups aimed at standardization, such as the Subcommittee on Blood Pressure Measurement (SCOBPM), conferences or special sessions, such as the IEEE International Symposium on Medical Measurements and Applications, and several special sessions during the annual IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technical Conferences. The TC-25 is also continuously engaged to maintain liaisons with other committees, groups, societies and organizations working on topics related to the TC's scope.

The article deals with the issues of standardization in the field of geodesy and cartography at the present stage. The matters of planning and developing draft national standards in the Russian Federation were highlighted. Information is provided on the process of development and approval of the annual National Standardization Program. The activities of technical committees for standardization in the field of geodesy, cartography and spatial data are described. The analysis of development and approval of national standards in the mentioned field in the Russian Federation over the recent 7 years was provided. The issues of information support of the national standardization system were highlighted. Examples of draft national standards development were presented. Proposals to increase the annual number of draft national standards for geodesy, cartography and spatial data were presented.

An Introduction to the Technical Committee on Animal Bioacoustics

Animal Bioacoustics as a field of research involves the study of sound in non-human animals. The range of this field is wide and includes all aspects of sound production and reception, communication and associated behaviors, acoustic ecology and effects of noise/sound, and passive and active acoustic methods for monitoring individuals, populations, habitats and ecosystems. Members of the Technical Committee on Animal Bioacoustics (TCAB) come from diverse backgrounds, including those with training in biology, ecology, engineering, mathematics, oceanography, physics, and psychology. Many TCAB members also participate in the activities of other ASA Technical Committees including Acoustical Oceanography, Engineering Acoustics, Noise, Psychological and Physiological Acoustics, Signal Processing, and Underwater Acoustics, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field. This talk will highlight some of the popular and emerging areas of research in Animal Bioacoustics.
