Vicia mingyueshanensis (Fabeae, Papilionoideae, Fabaceae), a new species from western Jiangxi, China

Viciamingyueshanensis, a new species from the Mingyue Mountain Region of western Jiangxi, China, is described and illustrated. It is a perennial climbing liana that always links to riparian woods. A morphological comparison indicated that the new species is closely similar to Viciataipaica K. T. Fu and Viciadichroantha Diels; however, it differs from the other two species by several salient characters, such as plant indumentum, stipule shape, corolla colour, bractlet shape and calyx shape. Photographs, a preliminary conservation assessment, table of morphological characters and distribution map comparing this new species to two morphologically-similar species are also provided.

<p><strong>Rediscovery of <em>Styrax buchananii</em> and <em>S. chrysocarpus</em>, with supplemental descriptions adding fruit and floral characters, respectively</strong></p>

Styrax buchananii, recorded as endemic to Myanmar, has been known only in flower and S. chrysocarpus, endemic to China, only in fruit. Here we report the rediscovery of S. buchananii and S. chrysocarpus after ca. 100 and 70 years, respectively, since their publication. Both species were found in Yunnan Province, China. We also update the morphological descriptions of the two species to include fruit and floral characters, respectively, and provide a table of morphological characters that distinguish them from each other. A distribution map, photographs of living plants, and conservation assessment of each species are also provided.

THE HALACARID GENUS LOHMANNELLA (HALACARIDAE, ACARI): LIST OF SPECIES, NOTES ON CHARACTERS, DISTRIBUTION, ECOLOGY AND A TABULAR KEY

Presently, 39 Lohmannella species are accepted as valid, but future examinations may prove some of them to be junior synonyms of others. This article lists the most important descriptive papers, as well as the former names for each of the 39 species. The characters of another five species, known by their adults, are outlined but not given a name. Based on the published data, short diagnoses as well as notes on the distribution and habitats are added. In addition, the poorly known female of Lohmannella bihamata is described and illustrated. This article provides a table of morphological characters that are meant to facilitate the identification of Lohmannella species. The genus Lohmannella is spread worldwide, inhabiting all water depths and all climatic zones; its representatives live in marine and fresh water. Although the majority of Lohmannella species have been found at sea, five species have been recovered from fresh or slightly brackish water. In the following sentences, the number of unnamed species is given in square brackets. Records of 33 [plus two] marine species are exclusively from the littoral and/or bathyal zone (0–1,000 m deep); records of three [plus three] species are from the deep sea (deeper than 1,000 m); and one record is from the littoral / deep sea depth range. Most species have been found in the temperate and polar areas: namely, 12 [plus two] have been recorded north of 23°N and 20 south of 23°S. The data from the tropics include a single shallow water (0–200 m deep) record, one unnamed species from the 400–520 m depth and one [plus two] species from the depth of more than 1,000 m. Most southern hemisphere shallow water species are morphologically distinct from the bathyal and abyssal species, as well as from the northern hemisphere species.

<p><strong>Three new species of <em>Lycianthes</em> (Solanaceae) from Panama</strong></p>

Three Panamanian cloud forest species in the genus Lycianthes are newly described: L. coloradensis, from the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca; L. fortunensis from Chiriquí Province, Veraguas Province, and the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca; and L. talamancensis from Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí provinces. All three species are woody vines with tan, yellow, or orange-brown multangulate-stellate trichomes and entire to nearly entire white to purple corollas. In terms of vegetative morphology and trichome characteristics, L. coloradensis most closely resembles L. purpusii of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, L. fortunensis resembles the widespread L. multiflora, and L. talamancensis resembles L. hortulana of Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. This article provides species descriptions, maps of geographic distributions, specimen images of each species, and comparison tables of morphological characters used to separate L. coloradensis, L. fortunensis and L. talamancensis from similar species.

Helicteres binhthuanensis V.S.Dang (Malvaceae, Helicteroideae), a new species from southern Vietnam.

Helicteresbinhthuanensis V.S.Dang, sp. nov. from Ham Thuan Bac District, Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to H.angustifolia, which is a common species in mainland southeast Asia, and H.sphaerotheca, which is endemic to the Northern Territory, Australia, but differs from both by several salient characters such as leaf and calyx size, androgynophore length, petal color, and fruit shape. Photographs, a vernacular name, a preliminary conservation assessment, and a table of morphological characters comparing this new species to two closely related species also are provided.

РАСПРЕДЕЛЕНИЕ МОРФОЛОГИЧЕСКИХ ПРИЗНАКОВ ДЕКОРАТИВНЫХ СОРТОВ ПЕРСИКА ПО ПРИОРИТЕТУ

Background. Distinguishing morphological traits of peach varieties (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) and their gradations to a greater extent reflect the range of variability characteristic of the peach cultivars grown for fruit. Ornamental peach cultivars have their original features, especially as far as quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the flower are concerned. The use of wild peach and almond species in breeding for decorative purposes significantly widened the range of morphological variation in cultivars and invoked new gradations of their morphological traits. Therefore, it is vital to revise periodically the tables of morphological characters used in the assessment of cultivars. Materials and methods. The work was based on the ornamental peach collection maintained at the Nikita Botanical Gardens. Main morphological traits of cultivars were studied using the peach variety testing guidelines of the Russian State Variety Testing Commission, UPOV Guidelines, the Descriptor List of the Genus Persica Mill., and Expert Examination Methods for Ornamental Peach Varieties. Results. Analysis of the collection according to the main ornamental and morphological traits showed that its diversity in form is represented by 5 grades of tree height, 4 of tree vigor, 5 of tree habit, 10 of corolla color, 5 of double-flowering degree, 9 of flower shape, 4 of leaf color, 8 of flowering time, etc. This allowed us to adjust the tables of morphological characters for describing ornamental peach cultivars when they are assessed for their distinctness, and add new data, namely: 25 new traits with a set of grades and 22 new grades of tree, shoot and flower descriptors, which were absent in the peach testing guidelines of the Russian State Commission and UPOV (1995); 31 traits and 23 grades were added to the new UPOV Guidelines; and 1 trait and 16 new grades to the Expert Examination Methods for Ornamental Peach Varieties. Conclusions. The identified new traits and gradations, which were absent in the previously accepted expert examination procedures, expand the conception of ornamental peach variability. Thirty-one traits characterizing the plant’s overall ornamental appearance during the flowering period were classified as first-priority traits; six of them (tree height, tree habit, flower color, flower shape, double-flowering degree and flowering time) are recommended for classifying cultivars into groups.

First report of the genus Rhyncholagena Lang, 1944 from the South China Sea, with the description of a new species (Crustacea, Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Miraciidae)

During analysis of sediment samples from South China Sea, a new species belonging to the genus Rhyncholagena Lang, 1944 was found and described here. Rhyncholagenaparaspinifersp. n. differs from its congeners by the following combined characteristics: body ornamented dorsally with at least one row of spinules on each somite except penultimate urosomite; A2 exopod two-segmented; P1 enp-2 with one inner seta; P3 exp-3 with two inner setae, P3 enp-2 with one inner seta; female P5 exopod with five setae; male P5 baseoendopod with two setae and exopod with four setae. This is the first report of the genus Rhyncholagena in the China seas. In addition, a key to all valid species of Rhyncholagena is given, along with tables of morphological characters of all valid species and their distributions.

(Con)Fused bracts: The Identity and Application of Tradescantia cymbispatha (Commelinaceae) and a Neglected New Tradescantia Species from Bolivia

Abstract In order to understand the taxonomy of the enigmatic Tradescantia cymbispatha — the source of the confusion between T. sect. Austrotradescantia and T. sect. Cymbispatha — we reexamined the protologues of T. geniculata Vell., T. mundula var. scabrida, T. cymbispatha, T. cymbispatha var. villosissima, T. cerinthoides, T. koernickeana, and T. umbraculifera. Our analysis revealed a great deal of confusion caused by the misinterpretation of Vellozo's plate for T. geniculata. We concluded that T. cymbispatha is the accepted name for Vellozo's T. geniculata; Clarke's descriptions were based on a miscellaneous assemblage of three different species of Tradescantia from two different sections; and T. cymbispatha var. villosissima does not represent a distinct variety, but is a synonym of T. cerinthoides. Due to this confusion, a new Tradescantia species from Bolivia has remained undescribed until now. A table of morphological characters that distinguish the sections is also provided.

A revision of the genus Lomaantha, with the description of a new species

Lomaantha phragmitis sp. nov. is described and illustrated from a specimen collected on dead culms of Phragmites communis in southern China. The fungus differs from other described Lomaantha species in its conidiophores, conidiogenous cells and conidial appendages. Conidial morphology and presence or absence of percurrent proliferation of conidiogenous cells are the main characters distinguishing species within this genus. We provided a key and synoptic table of morphological characters of all three Lomaantha species.

Globulinella halloyi (Pottiaceae), a new species from Argentina

Abstract Globulinella halloyi is described from Volcan Socompa in Salta Province of Argentina. It is readily distinguished from congeners by the following combination of character states: robust plants, with costa dorsally and ventrally toothed and with two stereid bands in transverse section, and elongate propagula ca. 200 µm long. A description and ilustrations of the new species are provided. A table of morphological characters compares the three species of Globulinella.

The benthic dinoflagellate genus Amphidinium in south-eastern Australian waters, including three new species

Seventeen species of the mainly sand-dwelling genus Amphidinium are reported from south-eastern Australian waters. Three new species are described: A. boggayum, A. mootonorum and A. yuroogurrum. Additional features from previously described species are presented, including non-motile cell stages. Nine of these species are new records for Australia; however, these species are probably widespread and common. Two potentially ichthyotoxic species of Amphidinium were commonly found: A. carterae and A. cf. operculatum. A table of morphological characters is compiled as a step towards recognizing new characters with which to group species of this presently artificially defined unarmoured dinoflagellate genus.

New hybrid of genus Silene (Caryophyllaceae) in the Serra da Estrela, Portugal

Abstract A description is given of a new hybrid of the genus Silene (Caryophyllaceae) found in the Serra da Estrela Portugal. A brief taxonomic review of the two parent species, whose correct denomination has been controversial since the last century, is followed by a botanical description of the new taxon, Silene×montistellensis nothosp. nov.SEM study of its seeds revealed the presence of clear morphological characters which are useful for simple identification and differentiation. A section on the ecology and phytosociology of the three taxa includes the different affinities of each element for substrate type and plant community in which their optimum is reached. Finally, we list all the herbarium specimens from Portuguese sites consulted, both from our own collections and from different Spanish and Portuguese herbaria. Using the data from these Portuguese specimens and from field notes two comparative tables of morphological characters are presented.
