Ralstonia mannitolilytica Infections: A Systematic Review of Case Reports Unveiling Clinical Patterns and Therapeutic Insights.

Ralstonia mannitolilytica is an emerging opportunistic pathogen that has been increasingly reported in clinical settings. Despite its low pathogenicity in immunocompetent individuals, it poses a significant threat to immunocompromised patients, particularly those with underlying medical conditions or invasive medical interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical impact and management strategies based on the analysis of individual case reports on Ralstonia mannitolilytica . A comprehensive search of PubMed was conducted from inception until July 31, 2023, using the terms "Ralstonia mannitolilytica" and/or "Pseudomonas thomasii". Inclusion criteria for our systematic review included human-centered case reports of Ralstonia mannitolilytica infections, excluding case series and review articles. Data extraction followed PRISMA guidelines, including study details and patient characteristics. Case reports were systematically assessed using the JBI critical appraisal checklist, evaluating patient demographics, clinical history, diagnostic methods, interventions, post-intervention outcomes, adverse events, and lessons learned to minimize bias risk. A total of 17 case reports of Ralstonia mannitolilytica infections were included in our systematic review. Studies published from 2001 to 2023 revealed diverse global contributions, with 29.41% from China. Infection origins varied, with catheter-related cases being predominant. Mortality was reported in two studies. Antibiotic sensitivity analysis showed sensitivity to third-generation cephalosporins, notably Ceftazidime. Quality appraisal revealed that all studies had a low risk of bias, ensuring the overall robustness of the case reports. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding Ralstonia mannitolilytica infections, given their varied clinical presentations and antibiotic responses. The study also underscores the necessity for precise identification, customized treatments, and ongoing research to manage these infections effectively.

Capgras syndrome in children and adolescents: A systematic review

ObjectivesTo improve understanding of Capgras syndrome (CS) in the pediatric population, this study investigates its clinical features and discerns similarities and differences compared to CS in adults. MethodsWe conducted a descriptive systematic review of case reports following PRISMA guidelines, including cases of pediatric patients with CS. Patient demographics, medical and psychiatric history, imposter identity, underlying diagnosis, clinical manifestation, treatments, and outcomes were extracted and analyzed. ResultsWe included 37 articles comprising 38 cases. The median age of patients was 15, with 23 (60.5%) being male. The most prevalent underlying diagnoses were schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders (47.3%). Imposter identity involved parents in 32 cases (84.2%). Associated symptoms included persecutory delusions (63.1%), auditory hallucinations (42.1%), aggression (31.5%), and depression (21.0%). ConclusionThere is a significant gap in our understanding of CS, particularly in pediatric patients. This is the first systematic review of CS in pediatric patients, encompassing all cases found in English literature since 1923.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection in patients with prior psychophysical stress: a systematic review of case reports and case series

BackgroundSpontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an underdiagnosed cause of acute coronary syndrome, particularly in younger women. Due to limited information about SCAD, case reports and case series can provide valuable insights into its features and management. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the features of SCAD patients who experienced psychophysical stress before the SCAD event.MethodsWe conducted an electronic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception until January 7, 2023. We included case reports or series that described patients with SCAD who had experienced psychophysical stress before SCAD. Patients with pregnancy-associated SCAD were excluded from our analysis.ResultsIn total, we included 93 case reports or series describing 105 patients with SCAD. The average patient age was 44.29 ± 13.05 years and a total of 44 (41.9%) of patients were male. Among the included SCAD patients the most prevalent comorbidities were fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) and hypertension with the prevalence of 36.4 and 21.9%, respectively. Preceding physical stress was more frequently reported in men than in women; 38 out of 44 (86.4%) men reported physical stress, while 36 out of 61 (59.1%) females reported physical stress (p value = 0.009). On the other hand, the opposite was true for emotional stress (men: 6 (13.6%)), women: 29 (47.6%), p value < 0.001). Coronary angiography was the main diagnostic tool. The most frequently involved artery was the left anterior descending (LAD) (62.9%). In our study, recurrence of SCAD due to either the progression of a previous lesion or new SCAD in another coronary location occurred more frequently in those treated conservatively, however the observed difference was not statistically significant (p value = 0.138).ConclusionWhile physical stress seems to precede SCAD in most cases, emotional stress is implicated in females more than males.

Understanding Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Iran: a systematic review of case reports.

To systematically review the reported cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in Iran. A comprehensive literature review of CJD cases in Iran was undertaken using the PubMed®, Scopus® and Google Scholar databases. In addition, the Iranian database MagIran was searched for Persian language reports. Case selection used the following criteria: (i) patients of Iranian origin; (ii) publication in peer-reviewed journals or reputable medical databases; (iii) a definitive diagnosis of CJD based on established diagnostic criteria. Thirteen cases from twelve reports were included in this systematic review. The majority of the cases were female (11 of 13; 84.6%). The mean ± SD age of patients at hospital admission was 59.38 ± 7.44 years. The findings of the case review suggested that the prevalence of CJD in Iran is not fully established. CJD may be misdiagnosed alongside other clinical signs. The most prevalent early indications of the disease were psychiatric and neurological in nature. A considerable delay in diagnosis was observed in some cases and there was a shortage of brain autopsy records. Efforts to improve diagnostic capabilities, promote awareness and establish monitoring systems are necessary for managing the challenges of providing an early diagnosis of CJD in Iran.

The Development of Diabetes and Diabetic Ketoacidosis Following Immunotherapy Treatment: A Systematic Review of Case Reports.

As cancer continues to be the leading cause of death worldwide, additional therapeutic options other than traditional platinum-based chemotherapy have become available that target tumor cells in innovative ways. Immunotherapies (e.g., immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI)) ramp up the immune system to target cancer cells, providing patients with more personalized and tumor cell-specific treatment options. This new age oncological treatment option has been found to provide a more meaningful and stronger alternative to traditional chemotherapy, resulting in longer periods of remission and milder side effects. However, because ICI heightens the immune system, resultant autoimmune conditions can occur. One of the most recently shown adverse effects of ICI are extreme hyperglycemia (i.e., type 1 diabetes) and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). To determine the incidence of immunotherapy-induced diabetes, a systematic literature review was performed using CINHAL, EBSCO, MEDLINE, and Web of Science. A total of 403 articles were initially screened, with a final 28 case reports included. The results show that checkpoint inhibitors were found to be most commonly associated with new-onset diabetes as opposed to traditional chemotherapy. Additionally, 41% of patients developed autoimmune diabetes and DKA after being placed on a single therapy of pembrolizumab (targets PD-1: programmed cell death protein 1). However, the pathological process underlying the development of endocrinopathies after treatment with ICI continues to be under investigation.

Action protocol of medical staff for airway obstruction after anterior cervical spine surgery: A systematic review of case reports

BackgroundPostoperative airway obstruction after anterior cervical spine surgery (ACSS) can be a fatal complication. Occasionally, it rapidly progresses to complete obstruction. There are no established standardized protocols on how medical staff should assess for signs and symptoms, seek help, or facilitate airway management after ACSS to prevent unfavorable events. This study aimed to primarily describe a systematic approach by assessing the signs and treatment outcomes of airway compromise in patients who underwent ACSS. Further, it recommended an action protocol after extubation for medical staff according to patients’ symptoms to prevent unfavorable outcomes. MethodsAn extensive literature search was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library to identify case reports, case series, and cohort studies restricted to English and published between January 1990 and March 2023. We included cases that described the signs, symptoms, and treatment of airway obstruction after ACSS. Meanwhile, cases involving complications of other known causes, cases of trauma or occipital-cervical fixation, or those using bone morphogenetic protein were excluded. ResultsTwenty cases from 17 studies were obtained, and their study quality was acceptable. Four patients died, and two presented with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Further, five of six patients had fatal complications that initially developed within 7 h after surgery. Then, 9 (69%) of 13 patients with evidence of hematoma (69%) showed initial symptoms within 12 h after surgery. Finally, 9 of 11 patients with early-stage symptoms had favorable outcomes, and patients who developed late-stage symptoms commonly had unfavorable outcomes. ConclusionThe early identification of signs and symptoms and immediate treatment are important, particularly within 12 h postoperatively. We suggest a novel action protocol for medical staff according to symptom urgency, which includes the measurement of neck circumference using a string for evaluating neck swelling.

Digenic Alport Syndrome in Children: A Systematic Review of Case Reports and Case Series

Background: Alport syndrome comprises inherited heterogeneous disorders involving kidneys with varying combinations of ocular pathologies and hearing loss. Digenic Alport syndrome is a pathologic variant of Alport syndrome in which there is a mutation in two out of three mutations in type IV collagen (COL4A) genes, either COL4A5 with COL4A3/COL4A4, or pathogenic variants in COL4A3 with COL4A4. There are scarce data regarding the genotype–phenotype associations in children with digenic Alport syndrome. Objective: The present systematic review focuses on clinical presentations, genetic abnormalities, pharmacological management, and associated extrarenal manifestations in digenic Alport syndrome. Methods: A comprehensive search was done in major databases, such as PubMed and Google Scholar, using defined search terms encompassing case reports or case series on digenic Alport syndrome. The identified reports underwent screening by two different authors for inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Thirty-three cases were included, showing that the mean age at diagnosis was 6 years. Microhematuria was the most common kidney manifestation (85%), followed by nephrotic/nephritic range proteinuria (72%), while extrarenal features were a rare finding. The main diagnostic modality was genetic testing with specific findings on electron microscopy, such as thinning of the basement membrane (76.4%). Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis was the most common finding on light microscopy (50%). A missense mutation was the most common genetic mutation present in 65.7% of cases. The patients were primarily managed with medical management initially with no data regarding follow-up. Conclusion: The digenic phenotype of Alport syndrome presents with a mean age earlier than the other variants, with hematuria and proteinuria being the most common presentations, with rare extrarenal involvements. Furthermore, the most common genetic abnormality associated with the digenic variant of Alport syndrome is a missense mutation.

Ocular adverseeventsfollowingCAR-Tcelltherapy: A pharmacovigilance study and systematic review.

The rise of immuno-oncology, including the use of chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy is bringing in a new wave of cancer treatments, particularly in hematologic malignancies. However, data on their adverse events, particularly of the eye, is under-reported. To assess the ocular adverse events associated with the six FDA-approved CAR-T cell therapies, a disproportionality analysis utilizing the FAERS database was conducted from the first quarter of 2017 to the third quarter of 2023, as well as a systematic review of case reports of ocular events following CAR-T cell therapy up to December 20, 2023. A total of 53 ocular adverse events were identified from the FDAs FAERS database. The adverse events most frequently observed were mydriasis and xerophthalmia with tisagenlecleucel (Kymriah). The systematic review resulted in 8 case reports encompassing 19 patients which included a total of 27 events. This study demonstrates the importance of anticipation of potential ocular adverse events by ophthalmologists and oncologists as they can greatly contribute to morbidity in patients with cancer.

Treatment Outcome in Patients with Disseminated Cysticercosis: A Systematic Review of Case Reports and Case Series.

Disseminated cysticercosis is defined by multiple brain lesions and involvement of other body sites. Cysticidal treatment in disseminated cysticercosis is considered life-threatening. We conducted a systematic review of all published cases and case series to assess the safety and efficacy of cysticidal treatment. We conducted a systematic review in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (PROSPERO CRD42022331895) to assess the safety and efficacy of cysticidal treatment. Using the search term "disseminated neurocysticercosis OR disseminated cysticercosis," databases like PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched. Outcomes included death and secondary measures like clinical improvement and lesion reduction. We calculated the predictors of primary outcome (death) using the binary logistic regression analysis. We reviewed 222 published cases from 101 publications. Approximately 87% cases were reported from India. Of 222 cases, 134 (60%) received cysticidal treatment. Follow-up information was available from 180 patients, 11 of them died, and 169 showed clinical improvement. The death rate was 4% (5 out of 114) in patients treated with cysticidal drugs plus corticosteroids, in comparison with 13% (5 out of 38) in patients who were treated with corticosteroids alone. All patients using only praziquantel faced fatality. Death predictors identified were altered sensorium and lack of treatment with albendazole. We noted that the risk of death after cysticidal treatment is not as we expected, and a multicentric randomized controlled trial is needed to resolve this issue.

Vitamin C deficiency can lead to pulmonary hypertension: a systematic review of case reports

BackgroundIn the early literature, unintentional vitamin C deficiency in humans was associated with heart failure. Experimental vitamin C deficiency in guinea pigs caused enlargement of the heart. The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze case reports on vitamin C and pulmonary hypertension.MethodsWe searched Pubmed and Scopus for case studies in which vitamin C deficiency was considered to be the cause of pulmonary hypertension. We selected reports in which pulmonary hypertension was diagnosed by echocardiography or catheterization, for any age, sex, or dosage of vitamin C. We extracted quantitative data for our analysis. We used the mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) as the outcome of primary interest.ResultsWe identified 32 case reports, 21 of which were published in the last 5 years. Dyspnea was reported in 69%, edema in 53% and fatigue in 28% of the patients. Vitamin C plasma levels, measured in 27 cases, were undetectable in 24 and very low in 3 cases. Diet was poor in 30 cases and 17 cases had neuropsychiatric disorders. Right ventricular enlargement was reported in 24 cases. During periods of vitamin C deficiency, the median mPAP was 48 mmHg (range 29–77 mmHg; N = 28). After the start of vitamin C administration, the median mPAP was 20 mmHg (range 12–33 mmHg; N = 18). For the latter 18 cases, mPAP was 2.4-fold (median) higher during vitamin C deficiency. Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) during vitamin C deficiency was reported for 9 cases, ranging from 4.1 to 41 Wood units. PVR was 9-fold (median; N = 5) higher during vitamin C deficiency than during vitamin C administration. In 8 cases, there was direct evidence that the cases were pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). Probably the majority of the remaining cases were also PAH.ConclusionsThe cases analyzed in our study indicate that pulmonary hypertension can be one explanation for the reported heart failure of scurvy patients in the early literature. It would seem sensible to measure plasma vitamin C levels of patients with PH and examine the effects of vitamin C administration.

Post COVID-19 vaccination medium vessel vasculitis: a systematic review of case reports.

Vaccinations are essential in minimizing the effects of global health crises including COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigates the potential association between COVID-19 vaccination and the occurrence of medium vessel vasculitis. Several databases were utilized to conduct a comprehensive literature review. Thestudies werecarefullyevaluatedtoensuretheirquality and eliminate anypotentialbias. After reviewing 935 search results and removing duplicates, we selected 10 case reports. We discovered that medium vessel vasculitis may occur after COVID-19 vaccination, typically appearing around 16.2 days after vaccination. The patients in the study had a median age of 43.5 years and were predominantly males (80%). Additionally, half of the cases were reported after the second dose of vaccination. Vaccination-associated vasculitis is a rare yet possible complication of COVID-19 vaccination and lacks a clear treatment protocol.

Adult Vitamin B12 Deficiency-Associated Pseudo-Thrombotic Microangiopathy: A Systematic Review of Case Reports.

Cobalamin-deficient thrombotic microangiopathy or vitamin B12 deficiency presenting as pseudo-thrombotic microangiopathy is a rare disorder that can be misdiagnosed as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Patients with this condition are at risk of receiving unnecessary plasmapheresis with a potential delay in appropriate therapy with vitamin B12 supplementation. There are no established diagnostic criteria for this condition in clinical practice. We performed a systematic review of case reports published between January 2018 and January 2023 to analyze the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and patterns of laboratory markers to improve the diagnostic criteria for this condition.

Features of biliary tract diseases in ketamine abusers: a systematic review of case reports

Background and aimsAnesthesiologists prefer ketamine for certain surgeries due to its effectiveness as a non-competitive inhibitor of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor in the brain. Recently, this agent has also shown promise as an antidepressant. However, ketamine can cause hallucinogenic effects and is sometimes abused as an illicit drug. Ketamine abuse has been associated with liver and bile duct complications. This systematic study aims to better understand cholangiopathy in ketamine abusers by reviewing case reports.Methods and materialIn this systematic review, a comprehensive literature search was conducted with the terms “biliary tract diseases” and “ketamine”. Case reports and case series of adult patients with documented ketamine abuse and reported cholangiopathy or biliary tract disease were included. We extracted the data of relevant information and the results were reported through narrative synthesis and descriptive statistics.ResultsA total of 48 studies were initially identified, and 11 studies were finally included in the review. The mean age of the patients was 25.88 years. Of the 17 patients, 64.7% were men. Symptoms often included abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Most patients were discharged with improved symptoms and liver function. Common bile duct dilation and other findings were observed in imaging results and other diagnostic studies.ConclusionThis review highlights the diverse presentations and diagnostic modalities used in ketamine-induced cholangiography. These patients tend to be young men with deranged liver function tests and abdominal pain, which should be taken into consideration. These patients often require a multidisciplinary approach in their management.

Mpox reinfection: A rapid systematic review of case reports

BackgroundMpox re-emerged worldwide with the multi-country outbreaks that occurred in May 2022, threatening the public health of human beings. MethodsThis rapid systematic review summarized mpox reinfection cases documented. Electronic databases (PubMed, MedRxiv, and Social Science Research Network) were searched without time limitation, using the keywords “mpox,” “monkeypox,” & “reinfection,” “reoccur,” “reoccurrence,” “episode,” and “relapse”. All laboratory-confirmed cases of mpox reinfection published in the literature were included in this study. ResultsA total of seven publications (nine cases) from Africa, Europe, and South America were included. All mpox reinfection cases were male, with a median age of 36; 88.89% of cases had unprotected sexual behaviors with other males before each illness episode. The average onset interval between the two episodes was about 4 months. Perianal lesions and lymphadenopathy were major symptoms in both episodes, and no differences in clinical severity were reported between the two episodes. The mean duration of the two episodes was approximately 22 days and 13 days, respectively; which the mean duration of the second episode was shorter than the first infection (t = 2.17, p = 0.0487). Sexually transmitted infections were commonly concurrent among most cases, accounting for 55.6% and 77.8% in the two episodes, respectively. Full vaccination against mpox was rare among reinfection cases. ConclusionA second infection is possible even in a short period. Reinforcing monitoring, reducing high-risk behaviors, and heightening health education regarding mpox for high-risk populations are crucial to limit mpox spread, including persons with a history of mpox infection.

Pulmonary Complications of Cytomegalovirus Infection in Neonates and Infants: A Systematic Review of Case Reports and Pooled Analysis.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes intrauterine infections in 0.67% of neonates, with 12.7% displaying symptoms at birth. CMV can lead to severe multiorgan involvement, and mortality in symptomatic cases is around 30%. Pulmonary complications are rare in infants with CMV. This review assesses pulmonary complications and outcomes in infants with CMV infection. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, SCOPUS and Ovid SP to retrieve case reports on pulmonary complications in infants with congenital or perinatal CMV infection. Descriptive analysis and pooled analysis were conducted for the case reports. A total of 28 articles with 38 patients were included in this systematic review. The reported pulmonary complications in the case reports were CMV pneumonitis (34.2%), persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (18.4%), emphysema and chronic lung disease (15.8%), diaphragmatic dysfunction (13.2%), lung cysts and calcifications (10.5%), Pneumocystis jirovecii infection (7.9%), pulmonary hypoplasia (5.3%) and bronchial atresia (2.6%). Seven (18.4%) of 38 patients passed away because of the pulmonary complications of CMV infection. Congenital transmission (P = 0.0108), maternal CMV (P = 0.0396) and presence of neonatal comorbidities (P = 0.0398) were independent risk factors for mortality. This systematic review demonstrated infrequent occurrence of severe pulmonary involvement in CMV infection but should be considered in infants with persistent or severe respiratory symptoms.

Assessing the Labeling Information on Drugs Associated With Suicide Risk: Systematic Review.

Drug-induced suicide (DIS) is a severe adverse drug reaction (ADR). Although clinical trials have provided evidence on DIS, limited investigations have been performed on rare ADRs, such as suicide. We aimed to systematically review case reports on DIS to provide evidence-based drug information. We searched PubMed to obtain case reports regarding DIS published until July 2021. Cases resulting from drugs that are no longer used or are nonapproved, substance use, and suicidal intentions were excluded. The quality of each case report was assessed using the CASE (Case Reports) checklist. We extracted data regarding demographics, medication history, suicide symptoms, and symptom improvement and evaluated the causality of DIS using the Naranjo score. Furthermore, to identify the potential suicidal risk of the unknown drugs, we compared the results of the causality assessment with those of the approved drug labels. In 83 articles, we identified 152 cases involving 61 drugs. Antidepressants were reported as the most frequent causative drugs of DIS followed by immunostimulants. The causality assessment revealed 61 cases having possible, 89 cases having probable, and 2 cases having definite relationships with DIS. For approximately 85% of suspected drugs, the risk of suicidal ADRs was indicated on the approved label; however, the approved labels for 9 drugs, including lumacaftor/ivacaftor, doxycycline, clozapine, dextromethorphan, adalimumab, infliximab, piroxicam, paclitaxel, and formoterol, did not provide information about these risks. We found several case reports involving drugs without suicide risk information on the drug label. Our findings might provide valuable insights into drugs that may cause suicidal ADRs.

Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction by an Aneurysm of the Ventricular Membranous Septum: A Systematic Review of Case Reports.

We performed a literature search to identify the details of patients with right ventricular outflow tract obstruction caused by an aneurysm of the ventricular membranous septum in a perimembranous ventricular septal defect. Thirty-one cases with a median age of 29 years (range, 1-69 years) were studied. A right ventricle-pulmonary artery systolic pressure gradient ranged from 35 to 107 mm Hg (mean 69 mm Hg). An interventricular shunt was absent in eight patients: two children and six adults. It is necessary to monitor the size of an aneurysm of the ventricular membranous septum, whether or not an interventricular shunt is present.

Severe Early-Onset Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy Following Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome with Pulmonary Presentation after In Vitro Fertilization: Case Report and Systematic Review of Case Reports.

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is the most common pregnancy-related liver disease, usually presented in the third trimester with pruritus, elevated transaminase, and serum total bile acids. Evidence shows that it can be developed in the first trimester, more commonly after in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, with the presence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). A literature search was conducted in the PubMed/MEDLINE database of case reports/studies reporting early-onset ICP in spontaneous and IVF pregnancies published until July 2023. Thirty articles on early-onset ICP were included in the review analysis, with 19 patients who developed ICP in spontaneous pregnancy and 15 patients who developed ICP in IVF pregnancies with or without OHSS. Cases of 1st and 2nd trimester ICP in terms of "early-onset" ICP were pooled to gather additional findings. Proper monitoring should be applied even before expected pregnancy and during IVF procedures in patients with known risk factors for OHSS and ICP development (patient and family history), with proper progesterone supplementation dosage and genetic testing in case of ICP recurrence.

Acute abdomen following COVID-19 vaccination: a systematic review.

Conduct a systematic review of case reports and case series regarding the development of acute abdomen following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination, to describe the possible association and the clinical and demographic characteristics in detail. This study included case report studies and case series that focused on the development of acute abdomen following COVID-19 vaccination. Systematic review studies, literature, letters to the editor, brief comments, and so forth were excluded. PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases were searched until June 15, 2023. The Joanna Briggs Institute tool was used to assess the risk of bias and the quality of the study. Descriptive data were presented as frequency, median, mean, and standard deviation. Seventeen clinical case studies were identified, evaluating 17 patients with acute abdomen associated with COVID-19 vaccination, which included acute appendicitis (n=3), acute pancreatitis (n=9), diverticulitis (n=1), cholecystitis (n=2), and colitis (n=2). The COVID-19 vaccine most commonly linked to acute abdomen was Pfizer-BioNTech (messenger RNA), accounting for 64.71% of cases. Acute abdomen predominantly occurred after the first vaccine dose (52.94%). All patients responded objectively to medical (88.34%) and surgical (11.76%) treatment and were discharged within a few weeks. No cases of death were reported. Acute abdomen is a rare complication of great interest in the medical and surgical practice of COVID-19 vaccination. Our study is based on a small sample of patients; therefore, it is recommended to conduct future observational studies to fully elucidate the underlying mechanisms of this association.
