Trust in media and processing of health information during the Covid-19 pandemic

Based on a nationwide survey of 938 American adults in 2020, this study analyzed systematic and heuristic information processing related to Covid-19. Results showed mainstream media use correlated with systematic processing, while partisan and social media use correlated with heuristic processing. Trust in mainstream media predicted systematic processing, whereas trust in partisan and social media predicted heuristic processing. Perceived importance of health issues was positively associated with systematic processing and negatively with heuristic processing. Perceived ability to find relevant health news positively predicted systematic processing. The findings underscore the complex interplay among media trust, media use, and individual perceptions in information processing during public health crises.

Vaccinating with Valor: A Risk Preventive Model to Explain Factors in Parents’ Choice to Vaccinate Their Children for COVID-19

ABSTRACT Childhood immunization can effectively control and prevent infectious diseases; however, not all parents choose to vaccinate their children against vaccines, including COVID-19. This study aimed to determine potential factors influencing people’s willingness to vaccinate their children. An online survey was conducted with 509 adult parents/guardians of children to test our hypotheses. Based on the TPB model with the RISP model as the antecedent, results indicated that people’s systematic risk information processing, trust in science, and concerns about the disease positively influenced their cognitive structure, further impacting their attitude toward vaccinating their children. The results also verified that attitude toward vaccination and perceived behavioral control are both significant predictors of parents/guardians’ intention to vaccinate their children. The results contribute to health risk communicators creating effective strategies to better communicate with adults and increase intentions to vaccinate their children.

Conflicted and Relevant: Systematic Processing of Information on PFAS Contamination

ABSTRACT Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination is an emerging environmental and public health crisis. Thus, it is crucial to understand public risk perception and communication behaviors surrounding this issue. Guided by the heuristic-systematic model of information processing, this study explores the impact of conflicting information and personal relevance on information insufficiency and information processing. Through an online experiment, 1,062 U.S. adults were randomly assigned to one of four conditions as part of a 2 (information type: conflicting vs. consistent) × 2 (personal relevance: high vs. low) between-subjects factorial design. Both main effect and interaction effect were detected. Specifically, information insufficiency was highest among participants in the high personal relevance and consistent information condition. Personal relevance also had a main effect on information processing. Conflicting information indirectly elevated information processing through increased information insufficiency, but only when personal relevance was low. These findings suggest the importance of providing consistent and personally relevant information related to the risk of PFAS contamination.

Torn Between Love and Hate: Mouse Tracking Ambivalent Attitudes Towards Robots

AbstractRobots are a source of evaluative conflict and thus elicit ambivalence. In fact, psychological research has shown across domains that people simultaneously report strong positive and strong negative evaluations about one and the same attitude object. This is defined as ambivalence. In the current research, we extended existing ambivalence research by measuring ambivalence towards various robot-related stimuli using explicit (i.e., self-report) and implicit measures. Concretely, we used a mouse tracking approach to gain insights into the experience and resolution of evaluative conflict elicited by robots. We conducted an extended replication across four experiments with N = 411 overall. This featured a mixed-methods approach and included a single paper meta-analysis. Thereby, we showed that the amount of reported conflicting thoughts and feelings (i.e., objective ambivalence) and self-reported experienced conflict (i.e., subjective ambivalence) were consistently higher towards robot-related stimuli compared to stimuli evoking univalent responses. Further, implicit measures of ambivalence revealed that response times were higher when evaluating robot-related stimuli compared to univalent stimuli, however results concerning behavioral indicators of ambivalence in mouse trajectories were inconsistent. This might indicate that behavioral indicators of ambivalence apparently depend on the respective robot-related stimulus. We could not obtain evidence of systematic information processing as a cognitive indicator of ambivalence, however, qualitative data suggested that participants might focus on especially strong arguments to compensate their experienced conflict. Furthermore, interindividual differences did not seem to substantially influence ambivalence towards robots. Taken together, the current work successfully applied the implicit and explicit measurement of ambivalent attitudes to the domain of social robotics, while at the same time identifying potential boundaries for its application.

Judging the Wrongness of Firms in Social Media Firestorms: The Heuristic and Systematic Information Processing Perspective

Social media firestorms pose a significant challenge for firms in the digital age. Tackling firestorms is difficult because the judgments and responses from social media users are influenced by not only the nature of the transgressions but also by the reactions and opinions of other social media users. Drawing on the heuristic-systematic information processing model, we propose a research model to explain the effects of social impact (the heuristic mode) and argument quality and moral intensity (the systematic mode) on perceptions of firm wrongness (the judgment outcome) as well as the effects of perceptions of firm wrongness on vindictive complaining and patronage reduction. We adopted a mixed methods approach in our investigation, including a survey, an experiment, and a focus group study. Our findings show that the heuristic and systematic modes of information processing exert both direct and interaction effects on individuals’ judgment. Specifically, the heuristic mode of information processing dominates overall and also biases the systematic mode. Our study advances the literature by offering an alternative explanation for the emergence of social media firestorms and identifying a novel context in which the heuristic mode dominates in dual information processing. It also sheds light on the formulation of response strategies to mitigate the adverse impacts resulting from social media firestorms. We conclude our paper with limitations and future research directions.

Enhancing Cybersecurity: The Crucial Role of Self-Regulation, Information Processing, and Financial Knowledge in Combating Phishing Attacks

In today’s technologically advanced world, the escalating prevalence of phishing attacks necessitates an urgent exploration of effective countermeasures. This study delves into the crucial investigation of how self-regulation influences phishing susceptibility, while also examining the mediating role of information processing and the moderating influence of financial knowledge. A comprehensive survey was meticulously crafted, targeting 370 recent university graduates. The collected data underwent rigorous analysis using Hayes’ PROCESS macro, unveiling a mediated moderation model. The findings reveal that self-regulation does not directly predict phishing susceptibility. However, information processing, whether systematic or heuristic, significantly impacts phishing susceptibility. Additionally, information processing serves as a mediator, connecting self-regulation to phishing susceptibility. Notably, the interaction between systematic information processing and financial knowledge emerged as a significant determinant of phishing susceptibility. By establishing a comprehensive mediated moderation model, this study provides invaluable insights for individuals and organizations seeking to bolster their defenses against phishing attacks. Furthermore, it emphasizes the vital role of financial knowledge and employees’ heuristic information processing in mitigating cyber threats. This research serves as a crucial scientific contribution, offering compelling evidence that proactive management of contributing factors can effectively mitigate the escalating threats posed by phishing attacks.

Vivid and Engaging: Effects of Interactive Data Visualization on Perceptions and Attitudes about Social Issues

With the rising availability and volume of data, journalists are finding ways to integrate data-rich information into news content and make them accessible to everyday news readers by accompanying them with exemplifying cases. However, these exemplars do not always fully capture the complexity of the data patterns, leading to significant biases in readers’ issue perceptions. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of exemplification theory and interactivity, this study examines the effectiveness of interactivity in counteracting the exemplification effect through perceived vividness of and user engagement with data-rich information. A mixed-design experiment revealed that, compared to textual description and static visualization, interactive data visualization is effective in motivating systematic processing of baserate information, which positively influences accuracy of issue perception as well as personal attitudes toward two controversial issues—climate change and same-sex marriage legalization. These findings have theoretical and practical implications for journalistic practice and interface design for communicating data information.

Measuring the Persuasive Influence of Talk Show on Social Media Users: Applying Heuristic-Systematic Model with SEM

In today's digital age, talk shows have a substantial presence on multiscreen platforms. However, in studying their influence on the viewers, studies rarely investigated how they affect individuals' behavioral determinants, especially in addressing social issues. This present study aimed to fill this gap by exploring the persuasive influence of a talk show about social media usage on the viewers' attitude towards responsible use of social media based on the heuristic systematic information processing model. For this purpose, a video-embedded online questionnaire was used to collect relevant data from the heavy users’ segment of social media in Bangladesh (i.e., the university student social media users). SmartPLS 4.0 was used for partial least square structural equation modeling based on the data gathered from 226 voluntary respondents. The results show that exposure to the talk show does not directly associate with attitudes but with heuristic and systematic information processing modes that, in turn, influence attitude formation. In contrast, the systematic information processing mode predominates the formation of attitudes more than the heuristic mode. The findings have implications to add insights into creating awareness and developing prevention and educational interventions toward promoting responsible use of social media.

The effects of CSR perceptions and agreements: applying the heuristic-systematic information processing model in CSR campaigns

ABSTRACT Although some scholars explored the heuristic-systematic information processing model in communication studies, little is known about how consumers’ CSR perceptions influence CSR information processing and how the different information process strategies can affect consumers’ purchase intentions. To address this research gap, this paper conducted an online survey to understand how consumers’ agreements on CSR can determine their information-processing modes and subsequently affect their purchase intentions. The results suggested that higher levels of consumer agreement were associated with both systematic and heuristic information processing modes. Additionally, this study found that the positive effect of consumers’ CSR agreements on purchase intention was mediated by the heuristic process, while an indirect effect involving the systematic process was not observed. Also, the moderated mediation model suggested that the indirect effects of consumers’ CSR agreements on purchase intentions through the heuristic process depended on intrinsic CSR attribution. The theoretical implications and practical contributions to CSR communication are discussed in detail.

Understanding Information Processing and Protective Behaviors during the Pandemic: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study.

Few existing studies have examined information processing as an independent variable to predict subsequent information behaviors in a pandemic context, and the mechanism of subsequent information behavior processing following the initial or prior information behavior is unclear. Our study aims to apply the risk information seeking and processing model to explain the mechanism of subsequent systematic information processing in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. A three-wave longitudinal online national survey was administered during the period of July 2020 to September 2020. Path analysis was conducted to test the relationships between prior and subsequent systematic information processing and protective behaviors. One important finding was the key role of prior systematic information processing, as indirect hazard experience was found to be a direct predictor of risk perception (β = 0.15, p = 0.004) and an indirect predictor of protective behaviors. Another important finding was the central role of information insufficiency as a mediator/driving force in subsequent systematic information processing and protective behavior. The study has made important contributions in that it extends the scholarship on health information behaviors by (a) highlighting that relevant hazard experience in risk information seeking and processing model should be expanded to include indirect experience, and (b) providing the mechanism of subsequent systematic information processing following prior information processing. Our study also provides practical implications on health/risk communication and protective behaviors' promotion in the pandemic context.

How information processing and risk/benefit perception affect COVID-19 vaccination intention of users in online health communities.

To investigate the relationship among information processing, risk/benefit perception and the COVID-19 vaccination intention of OHCs users with the heuristic-systematic model (HSM). This study conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire via an online survey among Chinese adults. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to examine the research hypotheses. Systematic information processing positively influenced benefit perception, and heuristic information processing positively influenced risk perception. Benefit perception had a significant positive effect on users' vaccination intention. Risk perception had a negative impact on vaccination intention. Findings revealed that differences in information processing methods affect users' perceptions of risk and benefit, which decide their vaccination intention. Online health communities can provide more systematic cues and users should process information systematically to increase their perceived benefits, consequently increase their willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccine.

Research on the influencing factors of users' information processing in online health communities based on heuristic-systematic model.

With the rapid development of the Internet and the normalization of COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control, Online health communities (OHCs) have gradually become one of the important ways for people to obtain health information, and users have to go through a series of information processing when facing the massive amount of data. Understanding the factors influencing user information processing is necessary to promote users' health literacy, health knowledge popularization and health behavior shaping. Based on the Heuristic-Systematic Model (HSM), Information Ecology Theory, Privacy Trade-Off and Self-Efficacy Theory, we constructed a model of factors influencing user information processing in online health communities. We found that information quality and emotional support had indirect effects on heuristic and systematic information processing, and these effects were mediated by privacy concerns and self-efficacy. In our research model, systematic information processing was most positively influenced directly by self-efficacy. Privacy concerns had a direct negative correlation with both dual information processing pathways. Therefore, OHCs managers should develop relevant regulations to ensure the information quality in OHCs and improve privacy protection services to promote user information processing by improving users' self-efficacy and reducing their privacy concerns. Providing a user-friendly and interactive environment for users is also recommended to create more emotional support, thus facilitating more systematic information processing.

Official sources, news outlets, or search engines? Rumour validation on social media during Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

This study, based on data collected from a representative sample of adults in the United States, explores the social cognitive variables that motivated Americans to validate rumours on social media about Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, both of which struck in August/September 2017. The results indicate that risk perception and negative emotions are positively related to systematic processing of relevant risk information, and that systematic processing is significantly related to rumour validation through search engines such as Google. In contrast, trust in information about the hurricane is significantly related to validation through official sources, such as FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), and major news outlets such as The New York Times. Trust in information is also significantly related to systematic processing of risk information. The findings of this study suggest that ordinary citizens may be motivated to validate rumours on social media, which is an increasingly important issue in contemporary societies.

Consumer financial information processing: An integrated approach to examine individual differences

AbstractThis study applied an integrated approach to construct a hierarchical framework for consumer financial information processing. Individual differences in customers' psychological, cognitive and motivational characteristics were examined as antecedents. Using data collected from a sample of 613 U.S. adults, this study used the structural equation modeling method to identify significant direct and indirect relationships amongst personality traits, financial self‐efficacy, financial information‐gathering ability, search motivation, financial information sufficiency and the utilization of heuristics and systematic financial information‐processing modes. The results showed that consumers' information sufficiency (+) directly explained the application of the heuristic mode, whereas consumers' information gathering ability (+), motivation to search (+) and information sufficiency (+) directly explained the use of the systematic mode. Financial self‐efficacy demonstrated positive indirect associations with both heuristic and systematic modes. The results also revealed that personality traits including agreeableness, emotional stability and extraversion indirectly explained the use of information‐processing modes. Agreeableness (−) and emotional stability (+) were indirectly associated with both heuristic and systematic information processing modes, whilst extraversion (+) was only indirectly associated with the heuristic mode. Openness (+) was the only trait that was directly associated with the systematic mode. This study contributes to the literature on consumer financial information processing by connecting individuals' psychological, cognitive and motivational characteristics. The findings of this study provide valuable insights and policy and practical implications within the industry.

The Effect of Heuristic Cues on Jurors’ Systematic Information Processing in Rape Trials

There is concern that jurors’ decisions in rape trials might be influenced by misleading cues (e.g., victim stereotypes) potentially explaining disproportionately low conviction rates. We investigated the bias hypothesis from the heuristic–systematic model as an explanation for how jurors may be influenced by misleading stereotypes even while they are effortfully processing rape trial evidence. We expected that when case evidence was ambiguous, stereotypes would guide motivated participants’ effortful information processing, but not when case evidence was strong. Mock jurors ( N = 901) were asked to make decisions about a rape trial with either ambiguous or strong evidence in which the complainant was either stereotypically distressed or unemotional giving evidence. Participants were either placed under high motivation conditions to encourage effortful information processing or in a control condition with low motivation instructions to encourage less effortful processing as a comparison. Participants’ information processing and case decisions were measured as key dependent variables. We found partial support for the hypothesized interaction and the bias hypothesis, suggesting that the types of evidence participants attended to in decision-making were influenced by misleading stereotypical cues. Our findings have implications for interventions to reduce the effect of misleading stereotypes on decisions in rape trials. A Longitudinal Study of Team Compassion, Team Integrative Complexity, and Team Innovation

Researchers have acknowledged the involvement of a temporal dimension in determining the links between team processes and team innovation. However, the extant literature has mostly treated team processes as static factors in team innovation processes. Specifically, scant research has examined how teams use team emotion to progress a systematic information processing and why some teams are more successful in transforming the systematic information processing into team innovation over time than some others are. Drawing on research on team integrative complexity and team life cycle, we address these questions and advance our knowledge about the dynamic roles of team compassion and team integrative complexity in team innovation processes. Using data collected throughout the project life of 87 teams, we find that team compassion predicts increased team integrative complexity. Moreover, team integrative complexity throughout the project life has a marginally positive effect on leaders’ ratings of team innovation on average. Importantly, team integrative complexity occurring in the later phase of the project life is more likely to predict team innovation than that occurring in the early phase and at the midpoint. We discuss theoretical and practical implications and offer some directions for future studies.

Willingness to invest and the assurance of corporate social responsibility reports

AbstractRecent research has found that the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) information on investment decisions will be eliminated when it is explicitly assessed, especially when CSR is not related to core business activities (immaterial CSR issues). We thus extend prior research by investigating whether (1) CSR assurance increases investors' willingness to invest when CSR performance is material or immaterial to core business activities and (2) CSR assurance moderates the effect of explicit assessment and CSR information on investment judgment. A 2 × 2 × 2 between‐subjects experiment was conducted using 213 professional investors. Overall, our results suggest that investors' willingness to invest is greater when positive CSR is verified by third‐party assurance in both material and immaterial CSR conditions. In addition, CSR assurance has a significant effect on investment judgment when immaterial CSR performance is explicitly assessed. As the affect‐as‐information heuristic (i.e., heuristic processing) is likely to be removed when CSR performance is explicitly assessed, the results of this study indicate that the affect heuristic is only eliminated when immaterial CSR is not assured, suggesting that CSR assurance moderates the effect of explicit assessment on investment judgment. Consistent with systematic‐heuristic theory, our results thus confirm that the systematic processing of CSR information does not necessarily attenuate affect heuristic processing; rather, these two processing modes can co‐occur. Our results concerning the impact of CSR assurance on positive CSR information inform firms that third‐party assurance affects investment judgment, especially for parties who consider purchasing these services, for example, managers or audit committee members. As CSR assurance is not mandatory, the audit profession could also be interested in our findings, as they might encourage firms to assure their nonfinancial information to enhance disclosure credibility. The inconclusive results on how CSR assurance affects investment judgment warrant further investigation of this issue in other reporting environments in different countries. Nevertheless, our findings contribute to the CSR literature by identifying novel aspects of the value of CSR assurance in different contexts, that is, the moderating role of CSR assurance and the explicit assessment of CSR information during investment decisions.

Explaining education-based difference in systematic processing of COVID-19 information: Insights into global recovery from infodemic

Systematic processing helps individuals identify misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic and serves as an individual-level measure to fight the infodemic. Highly educated people tend to engage in systematic processing more than their less educated counterparts. We follow a major part of the risk information seeking and processing (RISP) model to explicate this gap. An online survey (N = 1,568) conducted during the early stage of the pandemic in China showed that current knowledge and perceived information gathering capacity both positively mediated the association between education level and systematic processing. Although informational subjective norms were positively associated with systematic processing, we did not observe a significant difference in these norms between highly and less educated individuals. The results clarify the psychological mechanism underlying the education-based difference in systematic processing of the COVID-19 information and corroborate a relevant part of the RISP model. Moreover, our findings offer practical implications for facilitating individuals with less educational attainment to engage in systematic processing, thereby alleviating the negative impact of exposure to misinformation on them. These insights not only apply to managing the infodemic in China, but also inform the global recovery from the infodemic.

Anchoring in the past, tweeting from the present: Cognitive bias in journalists' word choices.

This study examines journalists’ language in their reporting and what their word choices reveal about their cognitive mindsets. Reporters on the campaign trail often cannot afford to engage in systematic information processing as they distill complex political situations under deadline pressures. Twitter’s emphasis on speed and informal cultural milieu can further lead journalists to rely on heuristics and emotions. Drawing upon insights from theories of the mind, memory, and language, this study explores how cognitive biases are embodied in journalistic work across different media. We built a large-scale dataset of text corpora that consisted of more than 220,000 news articles, broadcast transcripts, and tweets generated over a year by 73 campaign reporters in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Leveraging this unique dataset of journalistic outputs from a campaign season, we conducted automated text analyses. Results suggest that heuristics and intuitive thinking played a significant role in the generation of content on Twitter. Journalists infused their tweets with more emotion, compared to when they appeared in traditional media such as newspapers and broadcasts. Journalists’ tweets contained fewer words related to analytical and long-term thinking than their writing. Journalists also used informal language in their tweets to connect with their audiences in more personal and casual manners. Across all media examined in the study, journalists described the current race by drawing upon their experience of covering prior presidential elections, a form of anchoring heuristic. This study extends the use of cognitive biases in politics to a new realm, reporting, and shows how journalists’ use of language on the campaign trail reflects cognitive biases that arise when individuals make decisions under time pressure and uncertainty.
