Application of digital standards in construction

The article describes the global trend of industrial transition to the concept of “Industry 4.0” and the prerequisites for its influence on the field of industry standardization, in particular construction. The need to reorganize the current standardization system, which does not keep up with the pace of digital development of production, is outlined. The authors analyzed the modern standard-setting system in the construction industry, identified its main problems, which consist in a large volume of requirements for construction products and processes, an outdated approach to standardization in general, as well as a weak and ineffective existing standardization system and the difficulty of harmonizing Russian national standards with international standards. The described problems are relevant today, since right now the standardization system in the Russian construction industry is experiencing a new round of development, the abandonment of the prescriptive and target method of construction regulation and the transition to the parametric method. The study proved that the use of such modern technologies as digital standards (SMART standards) can solve the identified problems in the field of standardization, which in turn will affect the quality and efficiency of the regulatory system in construction.

Performance of Composite Slabs Using Profiled Steel Decking Reinforced with Cold-Formed C-Channel Steel

There are several different types, shapes and geometries of profiled steel decking that are available in the market for composite slabs construction. The application of the system in construction industry usually depends on the design tables provided by the manufacturer of steel decking. Engineers and builders use the design tables according to the required spans and thicknesses in order to facilitate the design of composite slabs for their construction. However, architectural designs might be an obstacle toward applying the system directly because of the limitation toward spans and thicknesses that can be provided by the design tables. In this research, reinforced profiled steel deckings using cold formed C-channel were used to construct full-scale composite slabs with a purpose to increase the span provided by manufacturer design tables and the capacity of the system for in-situ construction. The full-scale composite slabs system was simply-supported and tested in four-point bending with single control shear spans. The structural behaviour of the reinforced slabs system was investigated. The test comprises 12 specimens which include control (CD slabs) and reinforced decks (RD slabs) samples. The composite slab flexural behaviour was monitored using the LVDT instruments toward bending deformation at the critical points and toward slip displacement between the metal decks and the concrete. The load was applied until total damage was observed for the composite slabs system. The performances of the tested RD slabs were comparable with the corresponding CD slabs which indicated by the samples load carrying capacity, end-slippage, and concrete-steel composite action.

Slag-Based Geopolymer Concrete as Reinforced Concrete Jacketing Agent

The acceptance of geopolymeric systems in construction industry as an alternative to portland cement has paved the way for using it in the strengthening of reinforced concrete structures. In this regard, a study was carried out to develop a novel method of strengthening reinforced concrete beams by jacketing using ultrafine blast-furnace slag-based geopolymer. The reinforced concrete beams were in a fully damaged, partially damaged, or undamaged state prior to jacketing. Geopolymer concrete (GPC) exhibited appreciable performance as a jacketing agent. The results of GPC-jacketed beams in terms of strength, ductility, and stiffness degradation were superior compared to portland cement concrete (PCC). GPC-jacketed beams exhibited appreciable performance even at the early age of three days. The levels of damage also influenced the behavior of the jacketed beams.

Sustainable construction system with Egyptian metakaolin based geopolymer concrete sandwich panels

As one of the largest environmental offenders, the construction industry is a prime candidate for the application of the principles of sustainability. Sustainability could be achieved by using environment friendly materials and structural systems in construction industry. This paper aimed to study using geopolymer concrete as a structural board in constructing insulation sandwich panels under different types of loading. Four compression tests were performed on wall specimens in order to study the behavior of the panels under vertical in plane forces. Axial capacity prediction of wall panels was discussed using four published design equations. Eight one-way slab sandwich panels specimens were tested under flexure loading with different shear span ratios in order to compare the flexural behavior of conventional concrete and geopolymer concrete sandwich panels. The capacities of the slab panels were estimated using the conventional concrete codes provisions and compared to the experimental values. Geopolymer sandwich panels approved its ability to sustain different type of loading in the same manner as that of conventional concrete. A prototype was constructed to assess the constructability and the construction cost of the proposed system. The lack of production lines of geopolymer ingredients increases the material cost. On the other hand, the calculated total cost for different construction systems revealed that the labor cost is lower for the cast in place structural insulated panels CIP-SIP system.

Precast Connection Behaviour Using Finite Element

Precast concrete structure is not a new system in construction industry. Despite the several of advantages offer like ease in installation process, there is still a weakness especially on the stability of the whole structure where critical area at joint and connection. This issue has been a huge barrier in construction industry and become continuous topic for researcher. The connection strength is the most important part in precast system. Due to lack of standard, there are two common approaches in identifying strength and behaviour of connection, which is through experimental work and computational modelling. In this study, corbel connection at beam-column are chosen as a model for conducting a 3-dimensional finite element analysis using ABAQUS and results were validated with theory and experiments from previous study. Results of load-displacement show that the precast corbel have bending stiffness range to 4.5 kN/mm and found with ±10% different when compare to the experiment and theory. By establish the analysis and parameters; finite element analysis is an economical way to replace with tedious laboratory testing in identifying the behaviour of other precast connection. In future, researcher may gather all precast connection data for design purpose and standard development for precast system.

Russian practice of using digital technologies in public procurement management in the construction industry

The article discusses the relevance of the public procurement management system in the construction industry under conditions of digital economy. The main approaches to the formation of an effective mechanism of state management of the procurement system in construction industry taking into account the peculiarities of digital economy are disclosed. It is shown by the example of international experience that the transition of the public procurement system to digital technologies provides a number of competitive advantages to participants in the investment and construction market. The main procurement functions performed by the public procurement management tools using digital technologies are systematized. The features and practical aspects of public procurement management in the construction industry using digital technologies are considered. The most successful implemented projects in the field of procurement management for state needs are presented. The author formulates the main directions for improving the implementation of modern public procurement tools in construction in conditions of the digital economy.

Risk Assessment for Integrated Project Management System in Construction Industry

Abstract This paper presents a risk assessment model for construction projects. There are a number of problems in the construction industry in India that are attributed to various factors. The focus of the present research is to identify factors that influence the smooth completion of a project and develop a risk assessment model. The experience and success in the construction industry nowadays does not depend only on the traditional civil engineering programs. Project management, over the last 25–30 years, has developed into a methodological and systematic way of dealing with all aspects of construction projects. The wide range of topics that are now representing the field of construction management are more than important on scheduling, cost control and resource management. They include, but are not limited to, engineering project management concepts, quality management system, environmental management system and techniques for analysis the potential success factors. A questionnaire was prepared on the basis of a literature review and was filled by contractors, project management experts having more than 20 years of experience in the construction field in India. This paper presents the results of a study carried out to identify some of the core issues in construction management which are mentioned above, as a skeleton of integrated project management system for construction industry, and highlights the implication of studying some techniques to explain the asset and softness for this knowledge area. It is planned that this study will continue to model the integrated project management system and develop an expert system for the purpose of education and training to better equip middle and top level managers in the construction industry with the state-of-the-art tools, techniques and methodologies of project management. Organisational efficacy and the role of management control system in construction industry

Management control system is putatively vital for management to resemble organisational performance.The objective of the study is to understand the role of management control system in organisational efficacy. Management control system has obtained growing attention within both academia and industry as part of OE. As works of literature grow, finding new directions by critically evaluating the research and identifying future trends has become central in advancing knowledge for the field. This paper will review some of the work done in this area of study. Applying management control system as a theoretical lens, we develop a research plan from current OE and management control system literature by offering propositions for future research where management control system may permeate contemporary OE topics. In doing so, we provide an initial foundation for organisational efficacy scholars to both incorporate the role of management control system effects into research and launch new research stream.

New Concept of Semi-precast Concrete Slab on Pre-tensioned Boards

There are many fully or half precast slab systems in construction industry. Each of them has its advantages and disadvantages. One of them is better here, another elsewhere. The authors of this paper decided to develop a new solution. It tries to reconcile the advantages of different systems. The concrete slab consisted of pre-tensioned concrete boards as a bottom formwork and reinforcement as well as concrete topping is proposed. The tight concrete boards with important bending capacity allows to obtain the solid concrete slab of little thickness with avoiding the traditional formwork and supports. It has a great importance for acoustic slab properties. A small slab thickness makes them chipper in transport. The paper presents some structural details as well as the results of calculation of the slab with span of 8.0m and the thickness of 200mm.

The true motives behind the adoption of QLASSIC-CIS 7: 2006

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate contractors’ awareness level and adoption of QLASSIC assessment system in construction industry and to identify the variables that influenced the adoption of QLASSIC assessment system. Design/methodology/approach – Quantitative research method was adopted in order to test the above issues. The questionnaire composed for two parts: awareness and adoption of QLASSIC system; and the factors that influenced the adoption of QLASSIC system. Those contractors who registered under grade 6 and 7 are the scope of respondents in this study. Findings – The adoption of QLASSIC assessment is not significantly affected by the awareness whereas the motivations and barrier factors do. It was discovered that the contractors perception on QLASSIC adoption are basically due to the significant factors; the internal motivations and barrier. The major influencing factors are internal motivation factors, external motivation factors and barrier factors. Originality/value – This study reveals the true motives behind the adoption of QLASSIC assessment in the construction industry, where this finding significantly contributes to the understanding of contractors’ perception on this quality assurance program for the construction industry.

Critical Success Factors of Project Quality Management System for Malaysian Construction Industry

This study aims to explore the current implementation of Project Quality Management System and identify critical success factors of project quality management system associated with the indicators for each critical success factor identified. Hundreds of articles searched using keyword of “success factor”, “quality” and “construction” were gathered and analyzed using content analysis method. This research provides a comprehensive compilation of all previous study on the Critical Success Factors for Project Quality Management System implementation, through a clearly structured methodological approach. A total of six critical success factors for project quality management system in construction industry were identified. Each of the critical success factors is associated with three indicators that present evidences of implementation. The findings of this study provide guidance to the organization in implementing project quality management system effectively and efficiently.

Improvements in self-consolidating cementitious composites by using micro carbonized aggregates

There is growing interest in the use of self-consolidating cementitious systems in construction industry. The present research was conducted to enhance the mechanical performance of cement composites by the utilization of micro-sized inert particles. This paper deals with the synthesis of micro-sized inert carbonized particles from hemp hurds. The synthesized carbonized particles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). These particles were further used as additive in self-consolidating cement composites. Total of four different wt% additions (i.e. 0.08, 0.20, 1.00 and 3.00 by wt% of cement) were investigated. The cement composites containing carbonized particles inclusions were characterized by three point bending and compression tests. The results indicate that the carbonized particles additions enhanced the flexural and compressive strengths of the cement composites. It was also observed that the fracture properties and the energy absorption capability of the cement composites were enhanced substantially.

Low Carbon Footprint Mortar from Pozzolanic Waste Material

Nowadays, Portland cement clinker leads to emission of CO 2 into the atmosphere and therefore causes greenhouse effect. Incorporating of Palm Oil Fuel Ash (POFA) and Pulverized Fuel Ash (PFA) as partial cement replacement materials into mix of low carbon mortar decreases the amount of cement use and reduces high dependence on cements compared to ordinary mortar. The result of this research supported use of the new concept in preparing low carbon mortar for industrial constructions. Strength of low carbon mortar with POFA and PFA replacement in cement was affected and changed by replacing percent finesse, physical and chemical properties and pozzolanic activity of these wastes. Waste material replacement instead of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) was used in this study. This in turn was useful for promoting better quality of construction and innovative systems in construction industry, especially in Malaysia. This study was surely a step forward to achieving quality products which were affordable, durable and environmentally friendly. Disposing ash contributes to shortage of landfill space in Malaysia. Besides, hazard of ash might be another serious issue for human health. The ash disposal area also might create a new problem, which is the area's sedimentation and erosion.

Contractor’s Awareness on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Management Systems in Construction Industry

Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems is part of the overall management system that facilitates the management of the OS&H risks associated with the business of the organization. This includes the organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining the organization’s OS&H policy. The purpose of this research is to determine the level of awareness of contractors on OSH management systems. A total of 34 numbers of class A contractors in Kelantan registered with Pusat Khidmat Kontraktor (PKK) were randomly selected. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaire. The findings indicate that most of the Class A Contractor in Kelantan aware that the occupational safety and health management system are important and should be practiced to achieve zero accident and death on site

Coupled linkage system optimization for minimum power consumption

This paper presents the dynamic analysis and kinematic parameter optimization of a coupled linkage system for the purpose of employing the system in construction industry. So far, the kinematic optimization of wheel loaders was approached heuristically rather than utilizing elaborate theoretical examinations due to the complexity of coupled linkage structures. The results of the theoretical analysis and kinematic parameter optimization are presented in this paper. A wheel loader with Z-bar linkage was analyzed. For a given end-effector path, the linkage system was optimized to carry out effective motion while exhibiting minimum power consumption during operation. A modified principle of reduced system was applied in order to execute the dynamics analysis of the coupled linkage system. As a result, an optimal Z-bar linkage structure and a distribution of power consumption within the given conditions were obtained.

Identification of Risk Management System in Construction Industry in Pakistan

AbstractRisk management is a relatively new field in the construction industry of Pakistan, but it is gradually gaining prominence because of increased construction activity and competitiveness. This is an empirical survey-based study of risk management in the construction industry of Pakistan. It reports the findings of the importance of risks, their current management techniques, the existing status of risk management systems of the organizations, and barriers to effective risk management from the perspective of key stakeholders. The analysis of the results reveals that financial and economic factors, followed by quality, are the most important risks, and the industry generally tries to avoid or transfer these risks. Results indicated that the risk management system and practices of most of the organizations are reactive, semipermanent, informal, and unstructured with nonexistent and limited committed resources to deal with risks. Design Education of Industrialised Building Systems

Design, production and installation processes are distinguished between designers and manufacturers by common conventions in “open building” concept as an industrialised building system approach. Since being rapid construction and increasing the quality of building production, industrialised building systems are preferred in construction industry. Qualified engineers and architects are required during design and installation phase of these systems. Design education of four industrialised building systems for low rise residential at undergraduate level is discussed in this study. Student studies carried out according to structural installation principles of these systems are presented. The system design education will help to widespread of mentioned industrialised building systems in construction industry.

Development of quality matrix to measure the effectiveness of quality management systems in Turkish construction industry

Quality Management Systems (QMS) are being operated in some sectors in Turkey but it is rare to meet these systems in construction industry. There are many hinderances that make it difficult to apply these systems effectively due to the nature of construction and therefore, no objective way of measuring the effectiveness of these systems exists in construction industry. This study aims to light the way for the studies and further researches in finding a way to measure the effectiveness of QMS. Two matrix models are developed as a way to measure the effectiveness of QMS. Towards this goal, firstly a questionnaire survey has been conducted to a sample of construction firms that have or have not passed through these systems in all over the Turkey. Appraising some findings from the survey results; the number of QMS operating firms and their way of implementing QMS principles are determined by using the most common statistical software ‘SPSS 10.0 for Windows’. These principles are evaluated on a case study by means of developing quality measurement matrices for QMS operating firms and different results have been concluded.
