Nano-Titanium Dioxide: Antioxidant Activity and Cytotoxicity Against Human Lung Cancer Cell Line

The scope of this study is to synthesize titanium dioxide nanoparticles by chemical method and to assess their antioxidant and anticancer properties. Titanium isopropoxide was employed as a precursor in the production of the nanoparticles of titanium dioxide. The sample was analyzed using a variety of characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis. Further, their antioxidant and anticancer activities have been investigated. The crystallite size of titanium dioxide nanoparticles was revealed by X-ray diffraction, and the functional groups were confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis reveal the structure of the nanoparticles and the presence of titanium, carbon, and oxygen molecules, respectively. The antioxidant activity indicates that as the concentration of the TiO2 nanoparticles increases, it reaches the activity of ascorbic acid (standard). The sample shows good cytotoxic effect against A549 human lung cancer cell lines.

Advancement in Green Synthesis of Titanium Dioxide : Photocatalytic and Larvicidal Activities – A review

Nanotechnology is a fast expanding field with several applications in science, engineering, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and other areas. Nanoparticles (NP) are frequently produced through a variety of physical and chemical methods. Recently, green synthesis technologies that are more simple, sustainable, and cost-effective have been developed. The environmentally friendly/sustainable synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) has been in great demand in the previous quarter. Bioactive components found in organisms, such as plants, facilitate the processes of bio-reduction and restriction. This review described green synthesis of TiO2 NPs, the photocatalytical uses, and managing the larvicidal activity of disease-spreading mosquitoes. Various natural reducing agents including proteins, enzymes, phytochemicals, and others, are involved in the synthesis of TiO2 NPs. Current research findings and future concerns in a viable platform based on biologically meditated TiO2 nanostructures for industrial applications.

The use of decorated titanium oxide nanoparticles for the development of handmade textile heritage in Egyptian villages: Design, mechanical, flammability, and antibacterial properties

AbstractImproving eco‐friendly coating‐based materials for wool artifacts, such as kilim fabric can inspire new‐fashion design avenues for conserving ancient cultural heritage. Thus, this research addresses an efficient treatment agent from natural rosin acids (R) and dapsone (D) with variable sublethal proportions of synthesized titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) (i.e., 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.6%) for modifying kilim fabric (KF) using a dip‐coating method. The nanostructure of prepared TiO2 nanoparticles and their particle size were examined by x‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Zetasizer analyzer. The data showed that the majority of prepared TiO2 oriented to a rutile‐type structure with an average hydrodynamic diameter of 48.30–49.65 nm. The KF‐R/D‐0.3% TiO2 NPs specimen provided the best tensile properties reached ~3192 N compared with the untreated KF (i.e., 1125 N). This finding confirmed by SEM observations. Whereas, the specimen containing decorated TiO2 NPs (i.e., 0.6%) possessed higher flammability resistance property compared with other specimens. Moreover, XRD and FTIR results for treated KF specimens demonstrated the significant role of TiO2 NPs, which react with KF keratin either by new linkages or through chelating geometry to form a compact KF matrix. This contributed to enhance the tensile and flammability properties. Additionally, a great achievement in antibacterial properties occurred when TiO2 NPs used and their inhibitory zones were 18–36 mm, depending on the bacteria and specimen type.Highlights Novel treatment of KF fabric‐based bioagents with sublethal contents of TiO2 NPs was successfully prepared by dip‐coating route. The tensile force and flammability of treated KF fabric were greatly enhanced. A great achievement in antibacterial activity was noticed when TiO2 added. These treated fabrics have excellent possibility for use in conserving cultural heritage.

XRD analysis of Spirulina platensis mediated TiO2NPs

This study explores the synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) mediated by Spirulina platensis (S. platensis) and presents the corresponding X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. The analysis of the XRD patterns confirms the successful formation of crystalline nanoparticles, with distinct peaks aligning with the anatase phase of titanium dioxide. The utilization of S. platensis as a mediator not only facilitates the generation of TiO2NPs but also introduces a bio-friendly and sustainable dimension to the synthesis process. The anatase phase is known for its advantageous properties, including photocatalytic activity and stability, suggesting the potential of the synthesized nanoparticles for applications such as environmental remediation, catalysis, and photovoltaic devices. This study contributes valuable insights into the S. platensis-mediated synthesis of TiO2NPs, emphasizing their promising prospects for diverse technological applications. Further research can delve into optimizing synthesis parameters to enhance nanoparticle properties, promoting their effective utilization in various fields.

Preparation of titanium dioxide nanoparticles from Solanum Tuberosum peel extract and its applications

The present study describes a method for the preparation of green titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles from the peel of Solanum tuberosum, commonly known as potato, and the potato peel being a kitchen waste. The green synthesized TiO2 (G- TiO2) nanoparticles were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, TEM, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the G- TiO2 nanoparticles was also shown using the dye bromophenol blue. To explore the biocompatibility of the G- TiO2, the cell viability in normal as well as cancer cells was assessed. Further, the in vivo toxicity of the G- TiO2 nanoparticles was assessed using zebrafish embryos. The novelty of the present invention is to utilize kitchen waste for a useful purpose for the synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles which is known to have UV light scavenging properties. Moreover, the potato peel is a natural antioxidant and possesses a skin-lightening effect. A combination of the potato peel extract and titanium dioxide prepared using the extract will have a combinatorial effect for protecting UV light exposure to the skin and lightening the skin colour.

Lemon juice - mediated synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity

Plant compounds such flavonoids, terpenoids, polyphenols, enzymes, and alkaloids are used as reducing agents in eco-friendly titanium dioxide nanoparticle manufacturing. In the current investigation, titanium oxide was converted into titanium dioxide nanoparticles with the application of a lemon extract. Amazingly, the process was also cheap, eco-friendly, and easy to implement. Seeing the white fluid change to a pale yellowish white allowed us to visually confirm that the nanoparticles had been successfully created. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy were employed for further characterization. Nanoparticles of titanium dioxide were measured to be between 30 and 45 nm in size. In the DPPH assay, a titanium dioxide nanoparticle concentration of 50 L was shown to be optimal for antioxidant activity. The results of the bovine serum albumin denaturation experiment validated the green produced nanoparticles' dose-dependent anti-inflammatory effect. Consequently, the green synthetic titanium dioxide nanoparticles have great potential as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant in future medicinal applications.

Synthesis, Characterization and Surface Properties of Nano-TiO2 Using a Novel Leaf Extracts

The main focus of research is on the nature of applications in the fields of science and technology, particularly nanotechnology. In this paper, a simple, non-toxic, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly green method was used to synthesize TiO2 nanoparticles using the extraction of portulacaria afra plant leaves and TiCl4 as a precursor. The synthesized titanium dioxide nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The SEM image of TiO2 nanoparticles showed a few spherical, non-agglomerated particles. The average diameter of the nanoparticles, according to the surface topography of TiO2-NPs, is 70.24 nm. It was found that the average crystalline size was 18.9 nm by utilizing the Debye-Scherrer equation to calculate the size of the crystals. The vibrational mode of Ti-O-Ti exhibits a distinctive peak in the broad band centered at 578.64, 547.78, and 514.99 cm-1, which denotes the development of metal-oxygen bonding, confirming the presence of TiO2-NPs. The specific surface of the synthesized particles was calculated using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller BET equation.

Microbial synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles and their importance in wastewater treatment and antimicrobial activities: a review.

So, microbial-based synthesis of TiO2 NPs has gained popularity due to its eco-friendly nature, biocompatibility, etc. Being NPs, TiO2 NPs have a high surface area-to-volume ratio in addition to their photocatalytic degradation nature. In the present review, the authors have emphasized the microbial (algae, bacterial, fungi, and virus-mediated) synthesis of TiO2 NPs. Furthermore, authors have exhibited the importance of TiO2 NPs in the food sector, automobile, aerospace, medical, and environmental cleanup.

Comparative Study of Chemically and Green Synthesized Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles using Leucas aspera Leaf Extract

In this research work, the chemical synthesis and green synthesis of Titanium dioxide nanoparticles using Leucas aspera leaf extract were successfully carried out with titanium isopropoxide as the precursor. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are widely used in various fields such as biomedical applications (antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, etc.). For the Titanium dioxide nanoparticles thus synthesized using a low-cost and eco-friendly approach, the morphology, crystalline size, functional group and bandgap were confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV Spectroscopy techniques and antibacterial applications were carried out by Disc diffusion method.

Green Synthesis of Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles With Rosemary and Ginger and Their Bactericidal Action Against Staphylococcus aureus.

Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) have significantly proved to be highly useful in restorative materials, dental adhesives, sealants, cements, and other dental applications to prevent microbial colonization and reduce the risk of infections. The present study was aimed at developing a dental material with antibacterial properties by combining titanium oxide NPs using ginger and rosemary extracts. The formulation was prepared using rosemary and ginger, mediated by TiO2 NPs. The preparation was then introduced into the wells of a microplate consisting of cultured Staphylococcus aureus and was kept for incubation for four hours. To record the minimum inhibitory concentration, the test solution was added into Kimble tubes consisting of Muller-Hinton broth. The results obtained were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Increasing concentration led to decreased optical density, indicating bactericidal effects. Significantly lower optical density values were observed in decreasing order among the test samples (25, 50, and 100 μL) compared to control and antibiotic groups against Streptococcus, highlighting the potent antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of the greenly generated combination of titanium oxide NPs with herbs. This was also confirmed by moderate minimum inhibitory concentration at 100 μL. The present study suggests that there is a bactericidal process at play, leading to a reduction in the overall bacterial count. It can be concluded that the ginger and rosemary-mediated titanium oxide NPs serve as potential antibacterial agents against S. aureus. This study can be used as a preliminary study, and further studies can be conducted to use this formulation in the field of medicine.

Green Synthesis of TiO2 Nanoparticles Using Root Extract of Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari) and Evaluation of its Antibacterial, Antioxidant and Antidiabetic activities

Since ancient times, Asparagus racemosus, a traditional herb with various health advantages, has been used to cure a wide range of illnesses. Researchers sparked a lot of interest in the biological methods for producing nanoparticles (NPs). This study’s objective was to synthesize titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) utilizing the top-down nanofabrication method. Asparagus racemosus root extract was used to produce titanium nanoparticles utilizing green chemistry. The nanoparticles were characterized using UV-Visible spectroscopy, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), and EDX. According to the SEM images the particles are spherical in shape with an average size of 89.59 nm. The antibacterial activity was done with 3 bacterial strains i.e., E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtills. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH and phosphomolybdate assays, the calculated IC50 was 85.18±0.55 µg/ml and 66.4±1.3 µg/ml respectively. The calculated IC50 value for alpha amylase assay was 46.59±2.81 µg/ml. As per the outcomes it is concluded that the plant mediated titanium nanoparticle is very potent which can be used in pharmaceutical and biomedical areas.

Syzygium cumini (L.) Extract-Derived Green Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Induce Caspase-Dependent Apoptosis in Hepatic Cancer Cells.

An aqueous extract of Syzygium cumini seeds was utilized to green synthesize titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs). UV-Visible, DLS, FTIR, XRD, FESEM, TEM, SAED, EDAX, and photoluminescence spectroscopy techniques were employed to characterize the prepared TiO2 nanoparticles. The rutile crystal structure of TiO2 NPs was revealed by XRD study. The TEM and FESEM images of the TiO2 NPs revealed an average particle size of 50-100 nm. We employed EDAX to investigate the elemental compositions of TiO2 NPs. The O-Ti-O stretching bands appeared in the FTIR spectrum of TiO2 NPs at wavenumbers of 495 cm-1. The absorption edge peaks of TiO2 NPs were found in the UV-vis spectra at 397 nm. The MTT study revealed that TiO2 NPs effectively inhibited the growth of liver cancer Hep3 and Hep-G2 cells. The results of the corresponding fluorescent staining assays showed that TiO2 NPs significantly increased ROS generation, decreased MMP, and induced apoptosis in both liver cancer Hep3 and Hep-G2 cells. TiO2 nanoparticles lessened SOD, CAT, and GSH levels while augmenting MDA contents in Hep3 and Hep-G2 cells. In both Hep3 and Hep-G2 cells treated with TiO2 NPs, the Bax, CytC, p53, caspase-3, -8, and -9 expressions were remarkably augmented, while Bcl-2 expression was reduced. Overall, these findings revealed that formulated TiO2 NPs treatment considerably inhibited growth and triggered apoptosis in Hep3 and HepG2 cells.

Green synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles using Thymus vulgaris leaf extract for biological applications

In the last few decades, the biosynthesis of nanoparticles using biological agents such as microorganisms or plant extracts has gained a lot of attention due to the growing need for generating safe and non-toxic substances, cost-effective techniques, ecologically friendly solvents, and renewable materials. The aqueous leaf extract of Thymus vulgaris was used in the current investigation to achieve the biosynthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs). In this study, leaf extract was used as a size-reducer in synthesis of TiO2. Thyme leaf extract contains flavonoids, phenols, and saponins, which function as both reducing and stabilising agents and are crucial for the synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles. Methods such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) were used to characterise TiO2 NPs. The XRD investigations showed that titanium dioxide nanoparticles are crystalline and average crystal size is 28 nm. Gram-positive bacteria like S. aureus and B. subtilis as well as Gram-negative bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used as standardised test microbial inoculums to evaluate the antibacterial properties of biosynthesised nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs). Against each of the studied bacteria, the TiO2 nanoparticles demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity. TiO2 nanoparticles had the maximum activity against Staphylococcus aureus, with an inhibitory zone diameter of 14 mm at 100 g ml−1. By using DPPH, hydroxyl radical techniques, the comprehensive antioxidant activity of produced NPs was examined.

Morphology, size control, and photocatalytic activities of titanium dioxide nanoparticles synthetized by microemulsion method

In the present work, we successfully synthesized titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) by reverse microemulsion method using cyclohexane, aqueous ammonia materials, and various ratios of surfactants. Using this method, nanoparticles of various morphologies, such as filamentous, sheet, and spherical morphologies, were synthesized. In addition, NPs in very small size (i.e., 4–7 nm for spherical morphology) were obtained. The as-prepared samples showed light absorption in the range of 200–300 nm, indicating their potential application as an UV light induced photocatalyst. The obtained TiO2-NPs were amorphous and can be converted to anatase by heating at 600–750 °C and to rutile by heating above 900 °C. In addition, TiO2-NPs with sheet morphology showed the highest activity on photocatalytic decomposition of methyl orange relative to spherical and filamentous morphologies. We also showed that doping of tin (Sn) atoms in TiO2-NPs causes a significant increase in the photocatalytic activity of NPs and the time needed for photocatalytic decomposition decreases to around one-fifth of the time needed for nondoped NPs. The results of the present research indicated that the microemulsion process is an effective/potential method for the synthesis of some new functional materials.

An Eco-Friendly Approach Utilizing Green Synthesized Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles for Leather Conservation against a Fungal Strain, Penicillium expansum AL1, Involved in the Biodeterioration of a Historical Manuscript.

The main hypothesis of the present research is investigating the efficacy of titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) to prevent the growth of fungal strains when applied on leather under an experimental study. Therefore, fifteen fungal strains were isolated from a deteriorated historical manuscript (papers and leathers) and identified by traditional methods and ITS sequence analysis, including Aspergillus chevalieri (one isolate), A. nidulans (two strains), A. flavus (four strains), A. cristatus (one strain), A. niger (one strain), Paecilomyces fulvus (two strains), Penicillium expansum (two strains), and P. citrinum (two strains). The enzymes cellulase, amylase, pectinase, and gelatinase, which play a crucial role in biodegradation, were highly active in these fungal strains. TiO2-NPs were formed using the cell-free filtrate of the probiotic bacterial strain, Lactobacillus plantarum, and characterized. Data showed that the TiO2-NPs were successfully formed with a spherical shape and anatase phase with sizes of 2-8 nm. Moreover, the EDX analysis revealed that the Ti and O ions occupied the main component with weight percentages of 41.66 and 31.76%, respectively. The in vitro cytotoxicity of TiO2-NPs toward two normal cell lines, WI38 and HFB4, showed a low toxicity effect against normal cells (IC50 = 114.1 ± 8.1µg mL-1 for Wi38, and 237.5 ± 3.5µg mL-1 for HFB4). Therefore, concentrations of 100 μg mL-1 were used to load on prepared leather samples before inoculation with fungal strain P. expansum AL1. The experimental study revealed that the loaded TiO2-NPs have the efficacy to inhibit fungal growth with percentages of 73.2 ± 2.5%, 84.2 ± 1.8%, and 88.8 ± 0.6% after 7, 14, and 21 days, respectively. Also, the analyses including SEM, FTIR-ART, color change, and mechanical properties for leather inoculated with fungal strain AL1 in the absence of NPs showed high damage aspects compared to those inoculated with fungal strains in the presence of TiO2-NPs.

TiO2 nanoparticles: green synthesis, characterization, and investigation of antimicrobial properties, and developmental toxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos

The present study was designed to green synthesize titanium dioxide nanoparticles (G-TiO2 NPs) using Salacia reticulata leaf extract as a reducing and capping agent to assess antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects as well as toxicity evaluation in zebrafish. Besides, zebrafish embryos were employed to study the effect of G-TiO2 NPs on embryonic development. Zebrafish embryos were treated with TiO2 as well as G-TiO2 NPs at four different concentrations, i.e., 25, 50, 100, and 200 µg/ml for 24–96-hour post-fertilization (hpf). The SEM analysis of G-TiO2 NPs confirmed that the size was in the range of 32–46 nm and characterized by EDX, X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR, UV–vis spectra. During 24–96-hour post-fertilization (hpf), the results showed that 25–100 µg/ml of TiO2 and G-TiO2 NP instigated developmental acute toxicity in these embryos, causing mortality, hatching delay, and malformation. TiO2 and G-TiO2 NPs exposure induced axis bent, tail bent, spinal cord curvature, yolk-sac, and pericardial edema. Exposure of larvae to the highest concentrations of 200 μg/ml TiO2 and G-TiO2 NPs caused maximum mortality at all time points and reached 70% and 50%, respectively, at 96 hpf. Besides, both TiO2 and G-TiO2 NP revealed antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro. In addition, G-TiO2 NPs exhibited antibacterial effects. Taken together, this study provided a valuable insight into the synthesis of TiO2 NPs using green methods and the synthesized G-TiO2 NPs possess moderate toxicity and potent antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities.

In Vitro Safety Assessment of In-House Synthesized Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles: Impact of Washing and Temperature Conditions.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have been widely used in food, cosmetics, and biomedical research. However, human safety following exposure to TiO2 NPs remains to be fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro safety and toxicity of TiO2 NPs synthesized via the Stöber method under different washing and temperature conditions. TiO2 NPs were characterized by their size, shape, surface charge, surface area, crystalline pattern, and band gap. Biological studies were conducted on phagocytic (RAW 264.7) and non-phagocytic (HEK-239) cells. Results showed that washing amorphous as-prepared TiO2 NPs (T1) with ethanol while applying heat at 550 °C (T2) resulted in a reduction in the surface area and charge compared to washing with water (T3) or a higher temperature (800 °C) (T4) and influenced the formation of crystalline structures with the anatase phase in T2 and T3 and rutile/anatase mixture in T4. Biological and toxicological responses varied among TiO2 NPs. T1 was associated with significant cellular internalization and toxicity in both cell types compared to other TiO2 NPs. Furthermore, the formation of the crystalline structure induced toxicity independent of other physicochemical properties. Compared with anatase, the rutile phase (T4) reduced cellular internalization and toxicity. However, comparable levels of reactive oxygen species were generated following exposure to the different types of TiO2, indicating that toxicity is partially driven via non-oxidative pathways. TiO2 NPs were able to trigger an inflammatory response, with varying trends among the two tested cell types. Together, the findings emphasize the importance of standardizing engineered nanomaterial synthesis conditions and evaluating the associated biological and toxicological consequences arising from changes in synthesis conditions.
