Synthesis of NiO Nanostructures by Sonocatalyzed Microwave Irradiation Technique and Their Acetone Sensing Properties

Nickel oxide (NiO) nanostructures were synthesized by sonocatalyzed microwave irradiation technique, followed by calcination process. Electron microscopic images of NiO powder calcined at 500 °C revealed coexistence of nanorods and spherical nanoparticles. The NiO powders calcined at 600 and 700 °C composed of spherical nanoparticles, where a larger particle size was observed for the powder calcined at 700 °C. The acetone sensor response of the fabricated NiO sensors revealed that shape and size of the NiO particles affected the response. The response increased with increasing acetone gas concentration, which reached a maximum value at the operating temperature of 325 °C.

Surfactant Assisted Sol-Gel Synthesis of Nickel Oxide Nanostructures

This paper aims to find various ways to maximize the potential of nickel oxide (NiO) nanostructures which is produced via simple route method. The morphology of the NiO nanostructures was modified by adding surfactants such as Tween 80, SDS and CTAB. The effect on the morphology and optical property of the type and amount of the surfactant used were determined. The synthesized nanostructures were compared in terms of its shape, uniformity and size. SEM images revealed that the morphologies were altered by simply adding and adjusting the amount of surfactant such as CTAB, Tween 80 and SDS on to the solution. Nanocubic, nanospheres and nanoblades were produced using CTAB, Tween 80 and SDS respectively. XRD confirmed the presence of oxide and hdroxides of nickel on the produced product. The effects on the morphology of the NiO upon adding surfactant could give a good impact in different applications such as electrode, catalysts and gas sensors.

In Situ Hydrothermal Synthesis of Nickel Oxide Nanostructures by Thermal Decomposition and its Electrochemical Property

NiO nanorods composed of nanoparticles with diameter of 25–65 nm were synthesized on a nickel foam substrate by an in situ hydrothermal process in an aqueous solution containing only oxalic acid and subsequent calcination treatment. The nickel foam acted both as a substrate and nickel source. The calcination of the nickel foam substrate before the hydrothermal process played a crucial role in the formation of NiO nanostructures with different morphologies. Cyclic voltammetry and constant current charge–discharge measurements were used to evaluate the electrochemical properties of NiO. The results indicated a maximum specific capacitance as high as 126 F/g at a current density of 0.4 A/g.

A Versatile Route for the Synthesis of Nickel Oxide Nanostructures Without Organics at Low Temperature

Nickel oxide nanoparticles and nanoflowers have been synthesized by a soft reaction of nickel powder and water without organics at 100 °C. The mechanism for the formation of nanostructures is briefly described in accordance with decomposition of metal with water giving out hydrogen. The structure, morphology, and the crystalline phase of resulting nanostructures have been characterized by various techniques. Compared with other methods, the present method is simple, fast, economical, template-free, and without organics. In addition, the approach is nontoxic without producing hazardous waste and could be expanded to provide a general and convenient strategy for the synthesis of nanostructures to other functional nanomaterials.
