The synthesis of functional nano-particles via spray pyrolysis technique (SPT), especially those of catalytic nature, has attracted the interests of scientists and engineers, as well as industries. The rapid and high temperature continuous synthesis yields nano-particles with intrinsic features of active catalysts, that is, high surface area and surface energetic. For these reasons, SPT finds applications in various thermally inducible catalytic reactions. However, the design and synthesis of photocatalysts by SPT requires a knowledge set which is different from that established for thermal catalysts. Unknown to many, this has resulted in frustrations to those entering the field unprepared, especially since SPT appears to be an elegant tool in synthesizing oxide nano-particles of any elemental construct. From simple oxide to doped-oxide, and mixed metal oxide to the in situ deposition of noble metals, this Perspective gives an overview on the development of photocatalysts made by SPT in the last decade that led to a better understanding of the design criteria. Various challenges and opportunities are also highlighted; especially those beyond simple metal oxides, which perhaps contain the greatest potential for the exploitation of photocatalysts design by SPT. A Perspective on the Flame Spray Synthesis of Photocatalyst Nanoparticles.

Facile preparation of apatite-type lanthanum silicate by a new water-based sol–gel process

In recent years, apatite-type lanthanum silicates ([Ln10−x(XO4)6O3–1.5x] (X=Si or Ge)) have been studied for use in SOFC (solid oxide fuel cells), at low temperature (600–800°C), due to its ionic conductivity which is higher than that of YSZ (Yttrium Stabilized Zirconia) electrolyte. For this reason they are very promising materials as solid electrolyte for SOFCs. Synthesis of functional nanoparticles is a challenge in the nanotechnology. In this work, apatite-type lanthanum silicate nanoparticles were synthesized by a water-based sol–gel process, i.e., sol–gel technique followed by chemical precipitation of lanthanum hydroxide on the gel of the silica. Na2SiO3 waste solution was used as silica source. Spherical aerogel silica was prepared by acid catalyzed reaction, followed by precipitation of lanthanum hydroxide to obtain the precursor of apatite-type lanthanum silicate. Powders of apatite-type lanthanum silicate achieved from the precursor were characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area measurements (BET). The apatite phase was formed at 900°C.

Synthesis of Electroconducting Narrowly Distributed Nanoparticles and Nanocomposite Films of Orthanilic Acid/Aniline Copolymers

A unique strategy for synthesis of narrowly distributed and inherently self-stabilized copolymer nanoparticles by a simple emulsifier-free polymerization from orthanilic acid and aniline was developed. The polymerization yield, electrical conductivity, size, and its distribution of the nanoparticles could be simultaneously optimized by facilely regulating the comonomer ratio, oxidant/comonomer ratio, polymerization temperature, and time. In particular, the nanoparticles evermore exhibit a size polydispersity index down to 1.066 and strong redispersibility in water or polymer solutions. This facile synthesis of functional nanoparticles using orthanilic acid as vital comonomer readily affords yields up to 80%. A low percolation threshold of the nanoparticles/cellulose diacetate and poly(vinyl alcohol) nanocomposite films was found to be 0.18 and 0.07 wt %, respectively. This study opens a simple and general route for fabrication of nanostructured polymer materials with controllable size, narrow size distribution, intrinsic self-stability, strong dispersibility, high purity, and regulable electroconductivity.
