Influence of the alcohol and water grades on surfactant-free colloidal syntheses of gold nanoparticles in alkaline water-alcohol mixtures

To make the most of the unique properties of nanomaterials, and to bridge the gap between fundamental and applied research, controlled, green, cheap and energy efficient syntheses of nanoparticles are required. In this respect, room and low temperature surfactant-free colloidal syntheses of nanoparticles obtained in low viscosity and low boiling point solvents, without additives or nature-derived extracts, are promising to develop more active (electro)catalysts. Recently, a room temperature synthesis of surfactant-free gold nanoparticles has been documented (Chem. Mater. 2023, 35, 5, 2173) that requires only water, a base such as NaOH, an alcohol and HAuCl4. Unfortunately, the syntheses of nanomaterials are often sensitive to multiple parameters and it is well acknowledged that reproducibility is a general challenge in the chemical sciences, where the synthesis of nanomaterials is no exception. Here, we investigate the effect of the water conductivity and solvent grade on the surfactant-free low temperature (ca. 30 °C) synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles obtained in alkaline mixtures of ethanol and water. The synthesis can be performed with relatively low-grade ethanol but requires high purity water. The importance of water with low conductivity is also stressed for syntheses where ethylene glycol and glycerol are used as source of reducing agents. The results of this study over 100 samples pave the way to greener, more controlled and scalable syntheses of surfactant-free gold nanomaterials.

Reversible ionic liquids (RevILs) for the preparation of thermally stable SBA-15 supported gold nanoparticle catalysts

Reversible ionic liquids (RevILs) are ionic liquids that can be switched between molecular and ionic forms via two stimuli, and they can assist in the synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles. The RevIL-stabilized gold nanoparticles are deposited in the pores of SBA-15 mesoporous silica via incipient wetness without the functionalization of the SBA-15 surface. The location of nanoparticles inside the pores was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy technique and by a measured increase in the thermal stability of the nanoparticles in SBA-15 compared to non-porous silica. The porous gold catalysts are active in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol without calcination due to the absence of the ligands on the gold surface after deposition. Additionally, they are more active than the non-porous gold catalysts, indicating that the pore geometry enhances catalytic performance. Ultimately, the catalysts prepared by RevIL technique are thermally stable and active and show fine control over particle size.

On the Synergism of Biogenic Gold Nanoparticles and Hydroxyaluminum Phthalocyanines in the Photoeradication of Staphylococcus aureus.

Due to the unusual properties of gold nanoparticles, these structures are widely used in medicine and biology. This paper describes for the first time the synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles by the cell-free filtrate obtained from the Coriolus versicolor biomass and the use of these biogenic nanostructures to increase the photosensitizing efficiency of di- (AlPcS2) and tetrasulfonated (AlPcS4) hydroxyaluminum phthalocyanines in antibacterial photodynamic therapy. The obtained monodisperse particles were extremely stable, and this remarkable stability was due to the presence of phosphoprotein as a capping agent. The studied gold nanoparticles had a spherical shape, were uniformly distributed, and were characterized by a single plasmon band at wavelength of 514–517 nm. Almost 60% of the gold particles were found to be in the range of 13 to 15 nm. In accordance with the regulations of the American Microbiological Society, indicating that any antimicrobial technique must kill at least 3 log CFU (99.9%) to be accepted as “antimicrobial”, this mortality of Staphylococcus aureus was shown to be achieved in the presence of AlPcS4 + AuNPs mixture and 4.8 J cm−2 light dose compared to AlPcS4 alone, which required a light dose of 24 J cm−2. The best effect of increasing the effectiveness of combating this pathogen was observed in the case of AlPcS2 + AuNPs as a photosensitizing mixture. The light dose of 24 J cm−2 caused a lethal effect of the studied coccus in the planktonic culture.

Discrimination of ablation, shielding, and interface layer effects on the steady-state formation of persistent bubbles under liquid flow conditions during laser synthesis of colloids

Over the past decade, laser ablation in liquids (LAL) was established as an innovative nanoparticle synthesis method obeying the principles of green chemistry. While one of the main advantages of this method is the absence of stabilizers leading to nanoparticles with “clean” ligand-free surfaces, its main disadvantage is the comparably low nanoparticle production efficiency dampening the sustainability of the method and preventing the use of laser-synthesized nanoparticles in applications that require high amounts of material. In this study, the effects of productivity-dampening entities that become particularly relevant for LAL with high repetition rate lasers, i.e., persistent bubbles or colloidal nanoparticles (NPs), on the synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles in different solvents are studied. Especially under batch ablation conditions in highly viscous liquids with prolonged ablation times both shielding entities are closely interconnected and need to be disentangled. By performing liquid flow-assisted nanosecond laser ablation of gold in liquids with different viscosity and nanoparticle or bubble diffusivity, it is shown that a steady-state is reached after a few seconds with fixed individual contributions of bubble- and colloid-induced shielding effects. By analyzing dimensionless numbers (i.e., Axial Peclet, Reynolds, and Schmidt) it is demonstrated how these shielding effects strongly depend on the liquid’s transport properties and the flow-induced formation of an interface layer along the target surface. In highly viscous liquids, the transport of NPs and persistent bubbles within this interface layer is strongly diffusion-controlled. This diffusion-limitation not only affects the agglomeration of the NPs but also leads to high local densities of NPs and bubbles near the target surface, shielding up to 80% of the laser power. Hence, the ablation rate does not only depend on the total amount of shielding matter in the flow channel, but also on the location of the persistent bubbles and NPs. By comparing LAL in different liquids, it is demonstrated that 30 times more gas is produced per ablated amount of substance in acetone and ethylene glycol compared to ablation in water. This finding confirms that chemical effects contribute to the liquid’s decomposition and the ablation yield as well. Furthermore, it is shown that the highest ablation efficiencies and monodisperse qualities are achieved in liquids with the lowest viscosities and gas formation rates at the highest volumetric flow rates.

Biosynthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Using Litsea cubeba Fruit Extract for Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

This work describes a simple single-step method for green synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using Litsea cubeba (LC) fruit extract as a reducing as well as stabilizing agent simultaneously. Major parameters affecting the formation of LC-AuNPs, including gold ion concentration, reaction time, and reaction temperature were optimized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) measurements at a characteristic maximum absorbance of 535 nm. The functional groups responsible for reducing gold ions and capping AuNPs were examined by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed the crystalline nature of AuNPs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements showed that the biosynthesized LC-AuNPs were mostly spherical with an average size of 8-18 nm. The nanoparticles also demonstrated excellent ultrarapid catalytic activity for the complete reduction of 4-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol in the presence of NaBH4 within 10 min with a reaction rate constant of 0.348 min-1.

Elucidation of synergistic effect of eucalyptus globulus honey and Zingiber officinale in the synthesis of colloidal biogenic gold nanoparticles with antioxidant and catalytic properties

Natural ingredients including plants and biological materials can be used in the synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to fulfil the needs of safe, biocompatible AuNPs for life science applications. Despite many attempts on green synthesis of AuNPs, stable biogenic AuNPs has yet to be mass produced in the market due to the aggregation of the particles. This study provides a simple one-pot method in synthesising colloidal AuNPs using eucalyptus globulus honey and Zingiber officinale (ginger) as reducing and stabilising agents. The synthesised colloidal AuNPs exhibited well-dispersed spherical morphology with average diameter of 14.5 nm and 14.1 nm for honey-reduced colloidal AuNPs (H6) and honey-reduced/ginger-stabilised colloidal AuNPs (H6G5) respectively. Significant increase in DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities were found in H6G5 compared to H6 which indicate a prominent antioxidant property of the colloidal AuNPs. The reduction of 4-nitrophenol with the aid of the colloidal AuNPs recorded a reaction time of 28 min and 62 min for H6G5 and H6 respectively compared to 240 min of reaction without the addition of catalyst. The excellent properties of these colloidal AuNPs suggest a simple method for biogenic synthesis. Hence, the synthesised colloidal AuNPs can be further exploited for biomedical and life science applications.

Green synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles using latex from Hevea brasiliensis and evaluation of their in vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity.

Latex extracted from Hevea brasiliensis tree has been used as a green alternative for preparing gold nanoparticles (Au NPs); however, no study evaluating the cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of Au NPs synthesised using H. brasiliensis has been published. The present study aimed to synthesise and characterise colloidal Au NPs using latex from H. brasiliensis and to evaluate their in vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Ideal conditions for the green synthesis of Au NPs were studied. In vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of Au NPs in CHO-K1 cells was also evaluated. Our findings indicated that the ideal synthesis conditions of pH, temperature, reduction time, and concentrations of latex and HAuCl4 were 7.0, 85°C, 120 min, 3.3 mg/mL, and 5.0 mmol/L, respectively. LC5024 h of Au NPs was 119.164 ± 5.31 μg/mL. Lowest concentration of Au NPs tested presented minimal cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. However, high concentrations of Au NPs promoted DNA damage and cell death via apoptosis. On the basis of these findings, the authors optimised the use of an aqueous solution of H. brasiliensis latex as a reducing/stabilising agent for the green synthesis of Au NPs. Low concentrations of these NPs are biocompatible in normal cell types, suggesting that these NPs may be used in biological applications.

Synthesis of Au Nanoparticles with Benzoic Acid as Reductant and Surface Stabilizer Promoted Solely by UV Light

Photoreductive synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) from Au3+ is one important process for nanoprocessing. Several methods have been proposed; however, there is no report of a method capable of producing AuNPs with inexpensive reagents acting as both reductant and surface stabilizer, promoted solely under photoirradiation. We found that UV irradiation of water with Au3+ and benzoic acid successfully produces monodispersed AuNPs, where thermal reduction does not occur in the dark condition even at elevated temperatures. Photoexcitation of a benzoate-Au3+ complex reduces Au3+ while oxidizing benzoic acid. The benzoic acid molecules are adsorbed on the AuNPs and act as surface stabilizers. Change in light intensity and benzoic acid amount successfully creates AuNPs with controllable sizes. The obtained AuNPs can easily be redispersed in an organic solvent or loaded onto a solid support by simple treatments.

Laccase-Assisted Rapid Synthesis of Colloidal Gold Nanoparticles for the Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

A green method for the rapid preparation of uniform-sized colloidal gold nanoparticles under ambient conditions was presented and validated using laccase as a reduction agent in alkaline medium. UV-Vis spectrophotometry, field-emission high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, selected area electron diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, zetasizer, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the gold nanoparticles. The gold nanoparticles were spherical, crystalline, uniform, and monodisperse with an average size of 12.24 nm. These nanoparticles were successfully used to reduce 4-nitrophenol in the presence of NaBH4 and exhibited an excellent catalytic activity.

Study on synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles and preparation of antiE. coli O157 monoclonal antibody conjugated nanoparticles

The present paper describes the preparation of colloidal gold nanoparticles by a chemical reduction method, using some chemical compounds such as sodium citrate (Na3Ct), chloroauric acid (HAuCl4.3H2O) and anti-E. coli O157 monoclonal antibodyconjugated gold nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were characterized by several techniques including Ultraviolet and Visible Absorption Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The UV-Vis confirmed that the concentration of Na3Ct has a major effect on the size of the synthesized gold nanoparticles, and TEM images showed that the size of gold particles is in the range of 10-20 nm. Pulsed spark-discharge assisted synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles in ethanol

A green method, using pulsed spark-discharge (PSD) to synthesize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in ethanol, is studied in this article. Unlike conventional methods for metal nanoparticles synthesis, the PSD method does not require the addition of chemical surfactants and stabilizers. The size of PSD–AuNPs is examined by transmission electron microscopy, with a range 5–50 nm. The chemical compounds, crystal structure, and surface plasmon resonance of PSD–AuNPs are studied using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and UV–Visible spectroscopy, respectively. Zeta potential analysis shows that a negative charge (−40 mV) on the surface of the PSD–AuNPs may be contributing to the stability of the suspension. During the gold electrodes discharge in the ethanol, under an intensive electric field and thermal energy, bulk metallic gold and ethanol may produce AuNPs and varieties of chemical derivatives, which are also studied by GC/MS and FTIR to investigate the suspension mechanism. The analysis results show that there is an oxidation reaction of ethanol occurring during the PSD process to produce ethanol derivatives, such as acetaldehyde, acetic acid, and ethyl acetate, which may modify the surface of AuNPs by coordination of oxygen atoms. However, only acetic acid can form a negative charge by the deprotonation of the carboxylic group of surface in ethanol, resulting in the creation of a repulsion force between the particles to form the stable colloid system. The experimental results indicate that PSD is an alternative green process to synthesize gold nanoparticles suspension in ethanol. Moreover, with a gold rod consumption rate of 15 mg/L, concentrations of gold nanoparticles ~9 ppm have been observed; therefore, the net production rate is around 60%.

Size-Controlled Synthesis of Colloidal Gold Nanoparticles at Room Temperature Under the Influence of Glow Discharge

Highly dispersed colloidal gold (Au) nanoparticles were synthesized at room temperature using glow discharge plasma within only 5 min. The prepared Au colloids were characterized with UV–visible absorption spectra (UV–vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) equipped with an energy dispersion X-ray spectrometer (EDX). UV–vis, XPS and EDX results confirmed that Au3+ ions in HAuCl4 solution could be effectively reduced into the metallic state at room temperature with the glow discharge plasma. TEM images showed that Au nanoparticles were highly dispersed. The size of colloidal Au nanoparticles could be easily tuned in the nanometer range by adjusting the initial concentration of HAuCl4 solution. Moreover, the as-synthesized Au colloids (dav = 3.64 nm) exhibited good catalytic activity for glucose oxidation. The nucleation and growth of colloidal Au particles under the influence of the plasma was closely related with the high-energy electrons generated by glow discharge plasma.

Lamellar Phase Supported Synthesis of Colloidal Gold Nanoparticles, Nanoclusters, and Nanowires

Gold nanoparticles (Au NP) have been synthesized in aqueous phase under ambient conditions in the presence of a series of various cationic double chain as well as dimeric (gemini) surfactants. The spacer chain and twin tail length of these surfactants has been systematically varied to see the effect of hydrophobicity on their capping ability. It has been observed that the increase in the length of spacer chain (from 12-2-12 to 12-6-12) and twin tails (from 10-2-10 to 14-2-14) significantly increases the lamellar phase formation and which in return acts as a wonderful template to accommodate the NP in the form of nanoclusters and nanowires. The lamellar phase practically facilitates the nucleation of Au degrees and produces large NP (15 +/- 2 nm). All reactions have also been carried out in the presence of beta-cyclodextrin (CYC) which has strong ability to complex with surfactant tail. The presence of CYC induces a tendency to form nanowire and it is more prominent in the case of surfactants with longer spacer group.

Synthesis of Colloidal Gold Nanoparticles of Different Morphologies in the Presence of Triblock Polymer Micelles

The Au nanoparticles have been synthesized in the presence of micellar solutions of fixed concentration (i.e. 1.4 x 10(-3) mol dm(-3)) of each poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide), triblock polymers (TBP), such as P103, P84, P123, and F127. The nanoparticles have also been synthesized in the presence of mixed micellar solutions of binary TBP mixtures such as P103+ P84 and P103+P123. In the previous case, "raspberry type" Au nanoparticle-TBP aggregates have been observed in which nanoparticles of 2-3 nm have been uniformly distributed throughout the TBP micelle. On the other hand, in the latter case, apart from such aggregates, prominent ordered morphologies of nanoparticles such as rod, sphere, triangle, and hexagonal have also been observed with much larger dimensions. This has been attributed to the nucleation process occurring in the mixed micelles rather than in the micelles of single TBP components.
