Synthesis of Barium Titanate Nanoparticles from Decomposition of Barium Titanyl Oxalate Tetrahydrate with Aid of Supercritical Water

A novel process of BaTiO3 manufacture was conducted by using supercritical water. Preparation of BaTiO3 nanoparticles was investigated from decomposition of BaTiO(C2O4)2•4H2O (BTOT) with aid of supercritical water for the first time. When BTOT was exposed to supercritical water around 673 K and 30 MPa, it decomposed quickly in 5-22 seconds. The products formed strongly reply on environmental conditions. BaCO3 and TiO2 were always observed as the products in the absence of alkaline additives. BaTiO3 nanoparticles with specific surface area as high as 12~14 m2/g were able to be obtained under strong alkaline conditions, such as NaOH/COSubscript text2=2/1. It was found that environment of supercritical water was better than sub-critical conditions to obtain high quality BaTiO3 particles with fewer defects. Employment of supercritical water significantly reduced the reaction time and temperature compared to other BaTiO3 manufacture processes utilizing BTOT as precursor.

Structure and optical and dielectric properties of barium titanate nanoparticles obtained by the mechanochemical method

The parameters of mechanochemical synthesis of barium titanate nanoparticles from barium titanyl oxalate and an oxide mixture are optimized. X-ray phase analysis, infrared and Raman scattering spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and dielectric spectroscopy are applied to demonstrate that the nanoparticles contain the cubic and tetragonal crystal lattice modifications. The impurity spectra for the particles obtained by the mechanochemical method from different initial substances are identical. The ferroelectric phase volume increases as hydroxyl groups are annealed from the crystal lattice and decreases upon annealing of metal atom vacancies.

Solution processable nanoparticles as high- k dielectric for organic field effect transistors

The need for low operating voltages in organic field effect transistors (OFETs) is a motivation for the development of low temperature solution processable synthesis of high dielectric constant materials. Specifically, the glycothermal synthesis of barium titanate nanoparticles (size 10–15 nm) is described here. The effect of reaction time, temperature and reactant ratio has been studied. An 85% yield of pure BaTiO 3 was obtained at a temperature of 220 °C and a reaction time of 16 h with the H 2O:propanol molar ratio fixed at 1:1. A suspension of these nanoparticles in ethanol was then used to fabricate the dielectric layers in OFETs. The roughness of the spun coated layers limited the performance of these transistors. The deposition of an overlayer of sol–gel silica on the nanoparticle films improved the charge transport properties within the pentacene organic thin films by up to two orders of magnitude. The combination of solution processable high dielectric constant BaTiO 3 nanoparticle layer and sol–gel silica is promising for low voltage organic electronics.

Synthesis of barium titanate nanoparticles via a novel electrochemical route

An electrochemical route from Ti metal plate in KOH and Ba(OH) 2 electrolyte at room temperature is first established for the synthesis of BaTiO 3 nanoparticles. Anodic sparks play a key role, and KOH concentration is one of the most significant factors which affect the appearance of anodic sparks in this method. XRD patterns show that the powder obtained in our study is a pure perovskite phase BaTiO 3 with a cubic structure, whose size and morphology are subsequently studied by TEM. The mean diameter of the particles is 13.8 nm and the standard deviation (S.D.) fitted is 6.26 nm. It is also found that the mean size of the obtained nanoparticles increase from 13.8 nm to 168.0 nm, when 60 vol.% absolute ethanol is replaced by distilled water as the solvent of the electrolyte.
