Unraveling the Hybrid Origins of the X-Ray Nonthermal Emission from IGR J17091–3624

We present a comprehensive study based on multiwavelength observations from the NuSTAR, NICER, Swift, Fermi, NEOWISE, and ATCA telescopes during the 2022 outburst of the black-hole X-ray binary IGR J17091–3624. Our investigation concentrates on the heartbeat-like variability in the X-ray emission, with the aim of using it as a tool to unravel the origin of the nonthermal emission during the heartbeat state. Through X-ray timing and spectral analysis, we observe that the heartbeat-like variability correlates with changes in the disk temperature, supporting the disk radiation pressure instability scenario. Moreover, in addition to a Comptonization component, our time-averaged and phase-resolved spectroscopy reveal the presence of a power-law component that varies independently from the disk component. Combined with the radio–X-ray spectral energy distribution fitting, our results suggest that the power-law component could originate from synchrotron self-Compton radiation in the jet, which requires a strong magnetic field of about B = (0.3–3.5) × 106 G. Additionally, assuming that IGR J17091-3624 and GRS 1915 + 105 share the same radio–X-ray correlation coefficient during both the hard and the heartbeat states, we obtain a distance of 13.7 ± 2.3 kpc for IGR J17091–3624.

Jet Structure and Burst Environment of GRB 221009A

We conducted a comprehensive investigation of the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A, using new insights from very high-energy (VHE) observations from LHAASO and a complete multiwavelength afterglow data set. Through data fitting, we imposed constraints on the jet structure, radiation mechanisms, and burst environment of GRB 221009A. Our findings reveal a structured jet morphology characterized by a core+wing configuration. A smooth transition of energy within the jet takes place between the core and wing, but with a discontinuity in the bulk Lorentz factor. The jet structure differs from both the case of the short GRB 170817A and the results of numerical simulations for long-duration bursts. The VHE emission can be explained by the forward shock synchrotron self-Compton radiation of the core component, but requiring a distinctive transition of the burst environment from uniform to wind-like, suggesting the presence of complex pre-burst mass ejection processes. The low-energy multiwavelength afterglow is mainly governed by the synchrotron radiation from the forward and reverse shocks of the wing component. Our analysis indicates a magnetization factor of 5 for the wing component. Additionally, by comparing the forward shock parameters of the core and wing components, we find a potential correlation between the electron acceleration efficiency and both the Lorentz factor of the shock and the magnetic field equipartition factor. We discuss the significance of our findings, potential interpretations, and remaining issues.

Very high energy gamma-rays from GRB 180720B and GRB 190829A with external Compton emission

ABSTRACT Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) comprise short, bright, energetic flashes of emission from extragalactic sources followed by a longer afterglow phase of decreased brightness. Recent discoveries of very high energy (VHE, ≳100 GeV) afterglow emission from GRB 180720B and GRB 190829A by the High Energy Stereoscopic System have raised questions regarding the emission mechanism responsible. We interpret this observed late-time emission to be the result of inverse Compton emission of ultrarelativistic electrons in the GRB blast wave in an external radiation field, i.e. external Compton (EC), considering both the wind and interstellar medium scenarios. We present predictions of multiwavelength light curves and energy spectra, ranging from optical to VHE, and include the synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) radiation mechanisms as well. We corrected the EC and SSC models for the gamma-ray attenuation by absorption of photons through their interaction with the extragalactic background light. We compared our results to multiwavelength data and found that EC gives a satisfactory fit for a given set of fixed model parameters for GRB 180720B, whereas SSC results in a better fit for GRB 190829A. For both GRBs, a wind environment is preferred over constant-density interstellar medium, and the cosmic microwave background as the external radiation field. However, with more data and an effective optimization tool we can find a more robust fit of the model, implying better constraints on the GRB environment and the particle energy requirements for the emission observed at late times. This has consequences for future observations of GRBs at these extreme energies.

VERITAS Discovery of Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Emission from S3 1227+25 and Multiwavelength Observations

We report the detection of very high energy gamma-ray emission from the blazar S3 1227+25 (VER J1230+253) with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS). VERITAS observations of the source were triggered by the detection of a hard-spectrum GeV flare on 2015 May 15 with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT). A combined 5 hr VERITAS exposure on May 16 and 18 resulted in a strong 13σ detection with a differential photon spectral index, Γ = 3.8 ± 0.4, and a flux level at 9% of the Crab Nebula above 120 GeV. This also triggered target-of-opportunity observations with Swift, optical photometry, polarimetry, and radio measurements, also presented in this work, in addition to the VERITAS and Fermi-LAT data. A temporal analysis of the gamma-ray flux during this period finds evidence of a shortest variability timescale of τ obs = 6.2 ± 0.9 hr, indicating emission from compact regions within the jet, and the combined gamma-ray spectrum shows no strong evidence of a spectral cutoff. An investigation into correlations between the multiwavelength observations found evidence of optical and gamma-ray correlations, suggesting a single-zone model of emission. Finally, the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution is well described by a simple one-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton radiation model.

Probing gamma-ray bursts observed at very high energies through their afterglow

ABSTRACT A growing number of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows is observed at very-high energies (VHE, ≳ 100 GeV). Yet, our understanding of the mechanism powering the VHE emission remains baffling. We make use of multiwavelength observations of the afterglow of GRB 180720B, GRB 190114C, and GRB 221009A to investigate whether the bursts exhibiting VHE emission share common features. We assume the standard afterglow model and microphysical parameters consistent with a synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario for the VHE radiation. By requiring that the blastwave should be transparent to γ–γ pair production at the time of observation of the VHE photons and relying on typical prompt emission efficiencies and data in the radio, optical, and X-ray bands, we infer for those bursts that the initial energy of the blastwave is $\tilde{E}_{k, \rm {iso}} \gtrsim \mathcal {O}(10^{54})$ erg and the circumburst density is $n_0 \lesssim \mathcal {O}(10^{-1})$ cm−3 for a constant circumburst profile [or $A_\star \lesssim \mathcal {O}(10^{-1})$ cm−1 for a wind scenario]. Our findings thus suggest that these VHE bursts might be hosted in low-density environments, if the SSC radiation is responsible for the VHE emission. While these trends are based on a small number of bursts, the Cherenkov Telescope Array has the potential to provide crucial insight in this context by detecting a larger sample of VHE GRBs. In addition, due to the very poor statistics, the non-observation of high-energy neutrinos cannot constrain the properties of these bursts efficiently, unless additional VHE GRBs should be detected at distances closer than 15 Mpc when IceCube-Gen2 radio will be operational.

The Possibility of Modeling the Very High Energy Afterglow of GRB 221009A in a Wind Environment

In this paper, we model the dynamics and radiation physics of the rarity event GRB 221009A afterglow in detail. By introducing a top-hat jet that propagates in an environment dominated by stellar winds, we explain the publicly available observations of afterglow associated with GRB 221009A over the first week. It is predicted that GRB 221009A emits a luminous very high energy afterglow based on the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process in our model. We show the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis results of GRB 221009A and find that the SSC radiation component of GRB 221009A is very bright in the 0.1–10 TeV band. The integrated SED shows that the SSC emission in the TeV band has detection sensitivity significantly higher than that of LHASSO, MAGIC, and CTA. However, since the release of further observations, deviations from the standard wind environment model have gradually shown up in data. For example, the late-time multiband afterglow cannot be consistently explained under the standard wind environment scenario. It may be necessary to consider modeling with a structured jet with complex geometry or a partial revision of the standard model. Furthermore, we find that the inclusion of GeV observations could break the degeneracy between model parameters, highlighting the significance of high-energy observations in determining accurate parameters for GRB afterglows.

GRB 221009A: A Light Dark Matter Burst or an Extremely Bright Inverse Compton Component?

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been considered as potential very high energy photon emitters due to the large amount of energy released as well as the strong magnetic fields involved in their jets. However, the detection of teraelectronvolt photons is not expected from bursts beyond a redshift of z ≳ 0.1, due to their attenuation with the extragalactic background light (EBL). For these reasons, the recent observation of photons with energies of 18 and 251 TeV from GRB 221009A (z = 0.151) last 2022 October 9 has challenged what we know about the teraelectronvolt-emission mechanisms and the extragalactic background. In order to explain the teraelectronvolt observations, recent works exploring candidates of dark matter have started to appear. In this paper, we discuss the required conditions and limitations within the most plausible scenario, synchrotron self-Compton radiation in the GRB afterglow, to interpret the one 18 TeV photon observation besides the EBL. To avoid the Klein–Nishina effect, we find an improbable value of the microphysical magnetic parameter below 10−6 for a circumburst medium value >1 cm−3 (expected in the collapsar scenario). Therefore, we explore possible scenarios in terms of axion-like particles (ALPs) and dark photon mechanisms to interpret this highly energetic photon and we discuss the implications in the GRB energetics. We find that the ALPs and dark photon scenarios can explain the 18 teraelectronvolt photon but not the 251 teraelectronvolt photon.

GRB 110213A: A Study of Afterglow Electromagnetic Cascade Radiation

We obtained well-sampled optical photometry of GRB 110213A, including Swift/UVOT and XRT. Combining our data from those of other ground-based telescopes, we present 15 optical multicolor light curves showing similar shapes with two peaks. In contrast, in the X-ray band, only a single peak is observed between the two optical peaks. Temporal and spectral analysis of GRB 110213A shows that the X-rays differ from the optical for Phases I–III (before the second peak of the optical band at ∼5.6 ks). Moreover, they have the same spectral behavior at late times (Phases IV–VI). These data indicate that the optical and X-ray emission are dominated by different components. The synchrotron-supported pair cascade emission is included in the standard external forward-shock model, which is dominated by synchrotron radiation and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC). We find that the optical bands of GRB 110213A are dominated by the cascade emission from synchrotron radiation + SSC at the early stage, while the primary synchrotron + SSC radiation dominates the X-ray band. At late stages, both the X-ray and optical bands are dominated by emission from primary synchrotron + SSC radiation. The cascade component can reasonably explain the first optical peak. In contrast, the primary synchrotron + SSC emission mainly contributes to the second peak.

The relation between optical and γ-ray emission in BL Lac sources

ABSTRACT The relativistic jets produced by some Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are among the most efficient persistent sources of non-thermal radiation and represent an ideal laboratory for studying high-energy interactions. In particular, when the relativistic jet propagates along the observer’s line of sight, the beaming effect produces dominant signatures in the observed spectral energy distribution (SED), from the radio domain up to the highest energies, with the further possibility of resulting in radiation-particle multimessenger associations. In this work, we investigate the relationships between the emission of γ rays and the optical spectra of a sample of AGN, selected from BL Lac sources detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). We find that there is a close relationship between the optical and γ-ray spectral indices. Despite all the limitations due to the non-simultaneity of the data, this observation strongly supports a substantial role of Synchrotron-Self Compton (SSC) radiation in a single zone leptonic scenario for most sources. This result simplifies the application of theoretical models to explore the physical parameters of the jets in this type of sources.

Time-dependent Numerical Model for Studying the Very-high-energy Emissions of Distant Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 201216C

Recently, the MAGIC Collaboration reported a ∼5σ statistical significance of the very-high-energy (VHE) emission from a distant gamma-ray burst (GRB), GRB 201216C. Such distant GRB may be effectively absorbed by the extragalactic background light (EBL). The origin of the VHE emission from such distant objects is still unknown. Here, we propose a numerical model for studying the afterglow emission of this distant GRB. The model solves the continuity equation governing the temporal evolution of electron distribution, and the broadband observed data can be explained by the synchrotron plus synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) radiation of the forward shock. The predicted observed 0.1 TeV flux can reach ∼10−9−10−10 erg cm−2 s−1 at t ∼ 103−104 s, even with strong EBL absorption, such strong sub-teraelectronvolt (sub-TeV) emissions still can be observed by the MAGIC telescope. Using this numerical model, the shock parameters in the modeling are similar to two other sub-TeV GRBs (i.e., GRB 190114C and GRB 180720B), implying that the sub-TeV GRBs have some commonalities: they have energetic burst energy, low circumburst medium density, and a low magnetic equipartition factor. We regard GRB 201216C as a typical GRB, and estimate the maximum redshift of GRB that can be detected by the MAGIC telescope, i.e., z ∼ 1.6. We also find that the VHE photon energy of such distant GRB can only reach ∼0.1 TeV. Improving the low energy sensitivity of the VHE telescope is very important to detect the sub-TeV emissions of these distant GRBs.

Synchrotron self-Compton radiation from magnetically dominated turbulent plasmas in relativistic jets

ABSTRACT Relativistic jets launched by rotating black holes are powerful emitters of non-thermal radiation. Extraction of the rotational energy via electromagnetic stresses produces magnetically dominated jets, which may become turbulent. Studies of magnetically dominated plasma turbulence from first principles show that most of the accelerated particles have small pitch angles, i.e. the particle velocity is nearly aligned with the local magnetic field. We examine synchrotron self-Compton radiation from anisotropic particles in the fast cooling regime. The small pitch angles reduce the synchrotron cooling rate and promote the role of inverse Compton (IC) cooling, which can occur in two different regimes. In the Thomson regime, both synchrotron and IC components have soft spectra, νFν ∝ ν1/2. In the Klein–Nishina regime, synchrotron radiation has a hard spectrum, typically νFν ∝ ν, over a broad range of frequencies. Our results have implications for the modelling of BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). BL Lacs produce soft synchrotron and IC spectra, as expected when Klein–Nishina effects are minor. The observed synchrotron and IC luminosities are typically comparable, which indicates a moderate anisotropy with pitch angles θ ≳ 0.1. Rare orphan gamma-ray flares may be produced when θ ≪ 0.1. The hard spectra of GRBs may be consistent with synchrotron radiation when the emitting particles are IC cooling in the Klein–Nishina regime, as expected for pitch angles θ ∼ 0.1. Blazar and GRB spectra can be explained by turbulent jets with a similar electron plasma magnetization parameter, σe ∼ 104, which for electron–proton plasmas corresponds to an overall magnetization σ = (me/mp)σe ∼ 10.

The Polarization Behavior of Relativistic Synchrotron Self-Compton Jets

Abstract We describe a geometric model for synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) radiation from blazar jets, involving multiple emission zones with turbulent magnetic fields and fully self-consistent seed photon mixing for SSC. Including the effects of jet divergence, particle cooling, and the relativistic PA rotation to the observer frame, we find that the multizone model recovers simple predictions for SSC polarization, but describes new dependencies on jet viewing geometry and zone multiplicity. Increasing the zone number decreases both synchrotron and SSC polarization, but with different scaling. A rise in synchrotron polarization fraction ΠSync at high energies is guaranteed by basic relativity considerations, and strengthened by jet nonuniformity. Finite light travel time effects can suppress the synchrotron polarization at energies well below the ν Sync peak. In general ΠSync and ΠSSC are correlated with ΠSSC/ΠSync ≈ 0.3, but individual realizations can lie far from this trend. This study lets us estimate Π across the SED, leading to predictions in the X-ray band helpful for planning observations with IXPE and other upcoming X-ray polarization missions.

Origin for the Prompt Spectral Evolution Characteristics and High Energy Emission during the X-Ray Flare in GRB 180720B

Abstract The gamma-ray burst GRB 180720B is very peculiar. On one hand, some interesting features have been found by performing the detailed time-resolved spectral analysis in the prompt phase. First, the “flux-tracking” pattern is exhibited both for the low energy spectral index α and the peak energy E p in the Band function. Second, some parameter relations show strong monotonous positive correlations, include E p –F, α–F, E p –α, and E p –L γ,iso for all time-resolved spectra. Lastly, it should be noted that the values of α do not exceed the synchrotron limits . On the other hand, the photons with the energy of ≳100 MeV were detected by LAT both in the prompt phase and afterglow. Notably, the 5 GeV photon was observed at 142 s after the GBM trigger. The spectrum of this burst in the LAT range can be described as F ν ∝ ν −1.3 t −1.54±0.02 in the afterglow phase. And there are six GeV photons during the X-ray flare when the lower energy emission is fading to a weaker level. We try to give reasonable interpretations of the mechanism for prompt emission and the high energy emission (100 MeV to GeV) in the afterglow. The interpretations suggesting that synchrotron origin can account for the prompt emission and synchrotron self-Compton radiation can account for both the spectrum and temporal behavior of the 100 MeV to GeV afterglow emission that have been accepted by us.

The Physical Conditions of the Afterglow Implied by MAGIC’s Sub-TeV Observations of GRB 190114C

Abstract MAGIC’s observations of late sub-TeV photons from GRB 190114C enable us, for the first time, to determine the details of the emission process in a GRB afterglow and to pin down the physical parameters, such as the bulk Lorentz factor and the Lorentz factor of the emitting electrons as well as some of the microphysical parameters. We find that the sub-TeV emission is synchrotron–self-Compton radiation produced at the early afterglow stage. Combining the sub-TeV and X-ray observations we narrow uncertainties in the conditions inside the emitting zone, almost eliminating them for some parameters. Seventy seconds after the trigger the external shock had a Lorentz factor ≃100, and the electrons producing the observed sub-TeV radiation had a Lorentz factor ≃104, so that the sub-TeV radiation originates from Comptonization of X-ray photons at the border between the Thomson and Klein–Nishina regimes. The inferred conditions within the emitting zone are at odds with theoretical expectations unless one assumes moderate (with τ ≃ 2) absorption of sub-TeV photons inside the source. With this correction the conditions are in good agreement with predictions of the pair-balance model, but are also acceptable for generic afterglow model as one of many possibilities. The different temporal evolution of the inverse Compton peak energy of these two models opens a way to discriminate between them once late-time detection in the TeV range become available.

Systematic Physical Characterization of the γ-Ray Spectra of 2FHL Blazars

Abstract We test different physically motivated models for the spectral shape of the γ-ray emission in a sample of 128 blazars with known redshifts detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) at energies above 50 GeV. The first nine years of LAT data in the energy range from 300 MeV to 2 TeV are analyzed in order to extend the spectral energy coverage of the 2FHL blazars in our sample. We compare these spectral data to four leptonic models for the production of γ-rays through Compton scattering by a population of electrons with different spectral shapes. In the first three models we consider Compton scattering in the Thomson regime with different acceleration mechanisms for the electrons. In the fourth model we consider Compton scattering by a pure power-law distribution of electrons with spectral curvature due to scattering in the Klein–Nishina regime. The majority of blazar γ-ray spectra are preferentially fit with either a power law with exponential cutoff in the Thomson regime or a power-law electron distribution with Compton scattering in the Klein–Nishina regime, while a log-parabola with a low-energy power-law and broken power-law spectral shape in the Thomson regime appears systematically disfavored, which is likely a consequence of the restriction to pure Thomson scattering that we imposed on those models. This finding may be an indication that the γ-ray emission from flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) in the 2FHL catalog is dominated by Compton scattering of radiation from the dusty torus, while in the case of BL Lac objects, it is dominated by synchrotron self-Compton radiation.

Light Curve and SED Modeling of the Gamma-Ray Binary 1FGL J1018.6–5856: Constraints on the Orbital Geometry and Relativistic Flow

Abstract We present broadband spectral energy distributions and light curves of the gamma-ray binary 1FGL J1018.6−5856 measured in the X-ray and the gamma-ray bands. We find that the orbital modulation in the low-energy gamma-ray band is similar to that in the X-ray band, suggesting a common spectral component. However, above a GeV the orbital light curve changes significantly. We suggest that the GeV band contains significant flux from a pulsar magnetosphere, while the X-ray to TeV light curves are dominated by synchrotron and Compton emission from an intrabinary shock (IBS). We find that a simple one-zone model is inadequate to explain the IBS emission, but that beamed Synchrotron-self Compton radiation from adiabatically accelerated plasma in the shocked pulsar wind can reproduce the complex multiband light curves, including the variable X-ray spike coincident with the gamma-ray maximum. The model requires an inclination of ∼50° and an orbital eccentricity of ∼0.35, consistent with the limited constraints from existing optical observations. This picture motivates searches for pulsations from the energetic young pulsar powering the wind shock.

Blazar Jets Perturbed by Magneto-gravitational Stresses in Supermassive Binaries

Abstract We study particle acceleration and radiative processes in blazar jets under recurring conditions set by gravitational perturbations in supermassive binary systems. We consider the action from a companion orbiting a primary black hole of , and perturbing its relativistic jet. We discuss how such conditions induce repetitive magneto-hydrodynamic stresses along the jet, and affect its inner electron acceleration and radiative processes. Specifically, we study how macroscopic perturbations related to increased jet “magnetization” end up in higher radiative outputs in the optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray bands. We first find an increase in magnetic field strength, as gauged in the optical band from the synchrotron emission of electrons accelerated in kinetic processes stimulated by reconnecting magnetic lines. The energetic electrons then proceed to up-scatter the synchrotron photons to GeV energies after the canonical synchrotron self-Compton radiation process. Our model implies a specific recurring pattern in the optical to gamma-ray emissions, made of high peaks and wide troughs. Progressing accelerations caused by spreading reconnections will produce an additional synchrotron keV component. Such outbursts provide a diagnostics for enhanced acceleration of electrons, which can up-scatter photons into the TeV range. We discuss how our model applies to the BL Lac object PG 1553+113, arguably the best candidate to now for high amplitude, recurring modulations in its gamma-ray emissions. We also consider other BL Lacs showing correlated keV–TeV radiations such as Mrk 421.

Blazars and optical depth in a non-linear, time-dependent injection and cooling scenario

In this paper the optical depths in blazars due to photo-pair production is calculated for a time-dependent, non-linear injection model. Several target photon fields are taken into account, namely the internal synchrotron, synchrotron-self Compton and external Compton radiation, as well as a constant external soft photon field. By applying the optical depths to theoretical blazar spectra only the constant external photon field turns out to significantly influence the radiation at high energies. The impact of the internal time-dependent radiation fields is either minor or requires extreme parameter settings. Additionally, the synchrotron-self absorption turn-over energy for low synchrotron energies is calculated, which is inherently time-dependent. It would be challenging to use it to constrain free parameters, since precise knowledge of the observation time relative to the injection time is needed. In conclusion, optical depth does not significantly influence the non-linear, time-dependent injection and cooling model.

Multi-Wave Luminosity of High-Synchrotron-Peaked TeV BL Lacs Detected by Fermi LAT

We have studied the correlations between luminosities (LR, LIR, Lγ) in the radio, near-infrared and γ-ray wave bands for HSP TeV BL Lacs. The results show that there are significant intrinsic correlations between LR and Lγ and between LIR and Lγ in all states (high/average/low), and suggest that for HSP TeV BL Lacs, the Synchrotron Self-Compton radiation (SSC) is the main mechanism of high energy γ-ray emission, and the inverse Compton scattering of circum-nuclear dust is likely to be an important complementary mechanism.

PROSPECTS FOR GeV-TeV DETECTION OF SHORT GAMMA-RAY BURSTS WITH EXTENDED EMISSION

We discuss the GeV to TeV photon emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) within the refreshed shock and the continuous injection scenarios, motivated by the observation of extended emission in a substantial fraction of short GRBs. In the first model we assume that the central engine promptly emits material with a range of Lorentz factors. When the fastest shell starts to decelerate, it drives a forward shock into the ambient medium and a reverse shock into the ejecta. These shocks are reenergized by the slower and later arriving material. In the second model we assume that there is a continued ejection of material over an extended time, and the continuously arriving new material keeps reenergizing the shocks formed by the preceding shells of ejecta. We calculate the synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton radiation components for the forward and reverse shocks and find that prospective and current GeV–TeV range instruments such as CTA, HAWC, VERITAS, MAGIC, and HESS have a good chance of detecting afterglows of short bursts with extended emission, assuming a reasonable response time.
