Dynamical quantum state tomography with time-dependent channels

Abstract In this paper, we establish a dynamical quantum state tomography framework. Under this framework, it is feasible to obtain complete knowledge of any unknown state of a $d$-level system via only one operator of a special type of positive operator-valued measure (POVM) in dimension $d$. We define a new channel, referred to as the time-dependent average channel. Utilizing this channel, we show that we can acquire a collection of projective operators that is informationally complete (IC) and thus obtain the corresponding informationally complete POVMs (IC-POVMs). Zauner conjectured that for any dimension $d$ there exists a fiducial vector, such that all remaining $d^{2}-1$ elements of the desired symmetric informationally complete POVM (SIC-POVM) can be obtained by acting on said vector with unitary matrices representing elements of the Weyl-Heisenberg group. We show that under certain condition, it is possible to obtain infinite families of projective operators that are IC, and obtain infinite families of corresponding IC-POVMs; otherwise, Zauner's conjecture is incorrect. We also show how to simulate a SIC-POVM on any unknown quantum state by using the time-dependent average channel.

Equioverlapping measurements in qutrit systems

Overlap between quantum states or observables is a fundamental quantity in quantum theory. Equioverlapping measurements arise naturally when considering quantum measurements with equal overlap between measurement operators. This is essentially a kind of symmetric configuration for quantum measurements. The conventional von Neumann measurements and symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures (SIC-POVMs) are two extreme cases of equioverlapping measurements. These measurements not only have intuitive physical significance, but also have rich and subtle mathematical structures. However, they remain largely unexplored. In this work, we investigate some general features of equioverlapping measurements with focus on qutrit systems (i.e., three dimensional systems), and partially classify equioverlapping measurements in this case. We further pose the challenge of complete classification and construction of equioverlapping measurements.

Generalized polarization measurement and its connection with information energy

We generalize the polarization measurement to the projective measurements of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). Based on this result, we reveal a direct connection between polarization measurement and information energy function. We also express the polarization measurement by means of symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC-POVMs). We present an argument suggesting that polarization measurement by means of SIC-POVMs requires fewer resources than the projective measurements of MUBs.

SIC-POVMs from Stark units: Prime dimensions n2 + 3

We propose a recipe for constructing a fiducial vector for a symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measure (SIC-POVM) in a complex Hilbert space of dimension of the form d = n2 + 3, focusing on prime dimensions d = p. Such structures are shown to exist in 13 prime dimensions of this kind, the highest being p = 19 603. The real quadratic base field K (in the standard SIC-POVM terminology) attached to such dimensions has fundamental units uK of norm −1. Let ZK denote the ring of integers of K; then, pZK splits into two ideals: p and p′. The initial entry of the fiducial is the square ξ2 of a geometric scaling factor ξ, which lies in one of the fields K(uK). Strikingly, each of the other p − 1 entries of the fiducial vector is a product of ξ and the square root of a Stark unit. These Stark units are obtained via the Stark conjectures from the value at s = 0 of the first derivatives of partial L-functions attached to the characters of the ray class group of ZK with modulus p∞1, where ∞1 is one of the real places of K.

Experimental Single-Setting Quantum State Tomography

Quantum computers solve ever more complex tasks using steadily growing system sizes. Characterizing these quantum systems is vital, yet becoming increasingly challenging. The gold-standard is quantum state tomography (QST), capable of fully reconstructing a quantum state without prior knowledge. Measurement and classical computing costs, however, increase exponentially in the system size - a bottleneck given the scale of existing and near-term quantum devices. Here, we demonstrate a scalable and practical QST approach that uses a single measurement setting, namely symmetric informationally complete (SIC) positive operator-valued measures (POVM). We implement these nonorthogonal measurements on an ion trap device by utilizing more energy levels in each ion - without ancilla qubits. More precisely, we locally map the SIC POVM to orthogonal states embedded in a higher-dimensional system, which we read out using repeated in-sequence detections, providing full tomographic information in every shot. Combining this SIC tomography with the recently developed randomized measurement toolbox ("classical shadows") proves to be a powerful combination. SIC tomography alleviates the need for choosing measurement settings at random ("derandomization"), while classical shadows enable the estimation of arbitrary polynomial functions of the density matrix orders of magnitudes faster than standard methods. The latter enables in-depth entanglement studies, which we experimentally showcase on a 5-qubit absolutely maximally entangled (AME) state. Moreover, the fact that the full tomography information is available in every shot enables online QST in real time. We demonstrate this on an 8-qubit entangled state, as well as for fast state identification. All in all, these features single out SIC-based classical shadow estimation as a highly scalable and convenient tool for quantum state characterization.

The decompositions of Werner and isotropic states

The decompositions of separable Werner state, and also isotropic state, are well-known tough issues in quantum information theory, in this work we investigate them in the Bloch vector representation, exploring the symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) in the Hilbert space. We successfully get the decomposition for arbitrary $N\times N$ Werner state in terms of regular simplexes. Meanwhile, the decomposition of isotropic state is found to be related to the decomposition of Werner state via partial transposition. It is interesting to note that in the large $N$ limit, while the Werner states are either separable or non-steerably entangled, most of the isotropic states tend to be steerable.

Entropic uncertainty relations for general symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures and mutually unbiased measurements

We construct inequalities between R\'{e}nyi entropy and the indexes of coincidence of probability distributions, based on which we obtain improved state-dependent entropic uncertainty relations for general symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC-POVM) and mutually unbiased measurements (MUM) on finite dimensional systems. We show that our uncertainty relations for general SIC-POVMs and MUMs can be tight for sufficiently mixed states, and moreover, comparisons to the numerically optimal results are made via information diagrams.

A new construction of approximately SIC-POVMs derived from Jacobi sums over finite fields

In quantum information theory, symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC-POVMs) are related to quantum state tomography, quantum cryptography and foundational studies. However, constructing SIC-POVMs is notoriously hard. Although some SIC-POVMs have been constructed numerically, there does not exist an infinite family of them until now. In this paper, we utilize Jacobi sums over finite fields to propose a construction of approximately SIC-POVMs. The dimension of this approximately SIC-POVMs is $$q-2$$ , where q is a prime power. Notably, the dimension of the obtained approximately SIC-POVM from our framework is new.

The overlap phases of SIC-POVMs

A symmetric informationally complete positive-operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) is a special type of generalized quantum measurements that possesses a high degree of symmetry. It plays an important role in quantum tomography, quantum cryptography and foundations of quantum mechanics. The most important and difficult problem about SIC-POVM is to show its existence in every dimension n, which is suggested by many numerical evidences. In this paper, this existence problem of SIC-POVMs is investigated by considering their overlap phases. Specifically, the symmetric requirements of SIC-POVMs are encoded into the overlap phases between the fiducial project and the n 2 displacement operators. In this way, an equivalent condition of the existence of Weyl-Heisenberg group covariant SIC-POVMs is obtained in terms of these phases, so that a set of complex equations is established, which enables one to study the existence problem in a more explicit and direct fashion. In particular, we show that all the numbers appearing in the overlap phases have to be algebraic numbers. The significance of Zauner’s conjecture in our equivalent condition is also discussed, and therefore the SIC-POVMs in dimension four is constructed explicitly. Actually, our system of equations always admits a solution, the real difficulty lies in how to ensure these complex number solutions are of norm one, and therefore indeed phases. Our result shows that constructing SIC-POVMs from the overlap phases is possible, and symmetries can be applied directly to reduce the number of equations, so that it provide new insights into the difficult problem of SIC-POVMs, especially about the algebraic properties of these overlap phases.

Probability representation of quantum dynamics using pseudostochastic maps

In this work, we consider a probability representation of quantum dynamics for finite-dimensional quantum systems with the use of pseudostochastic maps acting on true probability distributions. These probability distributions are obtained via symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) and can be directly accessible in an experiment. We provide SIC-POVM probability representations both for unitary evolution of the density matrix governed by the von Neumann equation and dissipative evolution governed by Markovian master equation. In particular, we discuss whereas the quantum dynamics can be simulated via classical random processes in terms of the conditions for the master equation generator in the SIC-POVM probability representation. We construct practical measures of nonclassicality non-Markovianity of quantum processes and apply them for studying experimental realization of quantum circuits realized with the IBM cloud quantum processor.

SIC-POVMs and the Stark Conjectures

Abstract The existence of $d^2$ pairwise equiangular complex lines [equivalently, a symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM)] in $d$-dimensional Hilbert space is known only for finitely many dimensions $d$. We prove that, if there exists a set of real units in a certain ray class field (depending on $d$) satisfying certain algebraic properties, a SIC-POVM exists, when $d$ is an odd prime congruent to 2 modulo 3. We give an explicit analytic formula that we expect to yield such a set of units. Our construction uses values of derivatives of zeta functions at $s=0$ and is closely connected to the Stark conjectures over real quadratic fields. We verify numerically that our construction yields SIC-POVMs in dimensions 5, 11, 17, and 23, and we give the first exact SIC-POVM in dimension 23.

Two new constructions of approximately symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures

SIC-POVMs are important in quantum information theory, which have many applications in quantum state tomography, quantum cryptography and basic research in quantum mechanics. However, it is very difficult to construct SIC-POVMs. Therefore, many scholars have focused on approximately symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (ASIC-POVMs) for which the Hermite inner products are close to equal. In this paper, two new constructions of ASIC-POVMs are provided by using character sums and some special functions over finite fields.

New constructions of approximately SIC-POVMs via difference sets

In quantum information theory, symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC-POVMs) are related to quantum state tomography (Caves et al., 2004), quantum cryptography (Fuchs and Sasaki, 2003) [1], and foundational studies (Fuchs, 2002) [2]. However, constructing SIC-POVMs is notoriously hard. Although some SIC-POVMs have been constructed numerically, there does not exist an infinite class of them. In this paper, we propose two constructions of approximately SIC-POVMs, where a small deviation from uniformity of the inner products is allowed. We employ difference sets to present the first construction and the dimension of the approximately SIC-POVMs is q+1, where q is a prime power. Notably, the dimension of this framework is new. The second construction is based on partial geometric difference sets and works whenever the dimension of the framework is a prime power.

Two constructions of approximately symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures

Symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC-POVMs) have many applications in quantum information. Geometric characterization of true quantum decoherence

Surprisingly often decoherence is due to classical fluctuations of ambient fields and may thus be described in terms of random unitary (RU) dynamics. However, there are decoherence channels where such a representation cannot exist. Based on a simple and intuitive geometric measure for the distance of an extremal channel to the convex set of RU channels we are able to characterize the set of true quantum phase-damping channels. Remarkably, using the Caley-Menger determinant, our measure may be assessed directly from the matrix representation of the channel. We find that the channel of maximum quantumness is closely related to a symmetric, informationally-complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) on the environment. Our findings are in line with numerical results based on the entanglement of assistance.

Examples of conditional SIC-POVMs

The state of a quantum system is a density matrix with several parameters. The concern herein is how to recover the parameters. Several possibilities exist for the optimal recovery method, and we consider some special cases. We assume that a few parameters are known and that the others are to be recovered. The optimal positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) for recovering unknown parameters with an additional condition is called a conditional symmetric informationally complete POVM (SIC-POVM). In this paper, we study the existence or nonexistence of conditional SIC-POVMs. We provide a necessary condition for existence and some examples.

Maximally informative ensembles for SIC-POVMs in dimension 3

In order to find out for which initial states of the system the uncertainty of the measurement outcomes will be minimal, one can look for the minimizers of the Shannon entropy of the measurement. In case of group-covariant measurements this question becomes closely related to the problem of how informative the measurement is in the sense of its informational power. Namely, the orbit under group action of the entropy minimizer corresponds to a maximally informative ensemble of equiprobable elements. We give a characterization of such ensembles for three-dimensional group-covariant (Weyl–Heisenberg) symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures (SIC-POVMs) in both geometric and algebraic terms. It turns out that a maximally informative ensemble arises from the input state orthogonal to a subspace spanned by three linearly dependent vectors defining a SIC-POVM (geometrically) or from an eigenstate of a certain Weyl matrix (algebraically).

Construction of all general symmetric informationally complete measurements

We construct the set of all general (i.e. not necessarily rank 1) symmetric informationally complete (SIC) positive operator valued measures (POVMs). In particular, we show that any orthonormal basis of a real vector space of dimension corresponds to some general SIC POVM and vice versa. Our constructed set of all general SIC POVMs contains weak SIC POVMs for which each POVM element can be made arbitrarily close to a multiple times the identity. On the other hand, it remains open if for all finite dimensions our constructed family contains a rank 1 SIC POVM.

Systems of imprimitivity for the clifford group

It is known that if the dimension is a perfect square the Clifford group can be represented by monomial matrices. Another way of expressing this result is to say that when the dimension is a perfect square the standard representation of the Clifford group has a system of imprimitivity consisting of one dimensional subspaces. We generalize this result to the case of an arbitrary dimension. Let k be the square-free part of the dimension. Then we show that the standard representation of the Clifford group has a system of imprimitivity consisting of k-dimensional subspaces. To illustrate the use of this result we apply it to the calculation of SIC-POVMs (symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures), constructing exact solutions in dimensions 8 (hand-calculation) as well as 12 and 28 (machine-calculation).
