Application of Communication in The Metatah Traditional Ceremony in Bali

Traditional ceremonies in Bali are an important part of the culture and identity of its people. Communication in this traditional ceremony involves various elements such as symbols, movements, music, and ritual language rich in meaning. This research explores the dynamics of communication in Balinese traditional ceremonies, focusing on the role of symbols and rituals in transmitting values, norms, and cultural identity to future generations. This research uses a literature study method with a qualitative approach to explore communication in Balinese traditional ceremonies. Through the analysis of various literature sources, including books, articles, and related publications, this research gains deep insights into the role of communication in the context of Balinese culture. By integrating communication theory, cultural anthropology, and traditional ceremony studies, this research aims to depict the complexity of ritual and symbolic communication in Balinese traditional ceremonies and its impact on the sustainability of local culture. The ultimate goal is to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how communication plays a key role in preserving and strengthening cultural heritage.

Enhancing Communication for People with Autism Through the Design of a Context-aware Mobile Application for PECS

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties with social skills and communication. Autistic individuals require different types of assistance to cope with these challenges. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a commonly used program for teaching nonverbal and symbolic communication skills, particularly for children with limited or no communication abilities. However, despite the development of various technology-based PECS systems, there is a lack of features that can simplify their use by children with autism. In our work, we are developing a design of a personalized and context-aware PECS system. Our system not only presents pictures as content but also adapts and enhances the content using contextual information.

The phenomenon of imposture is considered in the article in the context of the specific state of societies where it appeared. The author pays close attention to the specifics of the perception of medieval impostors by different social groups, the ways of establishing and functioning of everyday and symbolic communication between the deceiver and his sympathisers, collective representations of justice, social order and its violations in different strata of society. The author identifies various forms of imposture — claiming belonging to another ethnicity, profession, or social class, creating fake genealogies, and using the label of impostor as a tool for defaming an opponent in polemical treatises. The goals of such deception could range from delegitimising the opponent to trying to increase one's social status or save one's own life. The author concludes that imposture is a peculiar reaction to a social crisis and simultaneously a way to bring society into balance and restore the ‘proper’ order of things.

Ability to Select AAC Graphic Symbols by Severity of Alzheimer’s Disease and Number of Symbols

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the graphic-symbol selection ability of patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT) based on the severity of dementia by conducting symbol identification and symbol discrimination tasks with increasing numbers of symbols. These tasks were performed with both normal elderly individuals and DAT patients to explore how cognitive load affects them differently.Methods: A total of 21 normal elderly individuals, 17 mild DAT patients, and 20 moderate to severe DAT patients were assessed. They performed symbol identification and symbol discrimination tasks using the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Symbol Assessment Tool. The number of symbols increased in six steps, from 4 to 72. Accuracy and response time were measured for statistical analysis.Results: In the symbol identification task, there was no significant difference in accuracy among the three groups. However, normal group showed significantly faster responses compared to moderate to severe DAT group. In the symbol discrimination task, normal group showed higher accuracy and significantly faster responses than moderate to severe DAT group. As the number of symbols increased, response times increased across all groups, with more time required for the symbol discrimination task.Conclusion: It was confirmed that the greater the severity of DAT, the more cognitive load and impaired information processing were reflected in symbol selection. Findings suggest that response time is a more sensitive indicator of cognitive decline in DAT patients and highlight the need to adjust the number of symbols and presentation methods according to the severity of the patient’s condition in dementia interventions.

Changing Teacher Practices and Perceptions and Improving Student Communication Outcomes Through Shared Reading

Shared reading is a powerful literacy intervention for the development of early communication and literacy skills. For students with extensive support needs who are beginning communicators, shared reading has the potential to support the development of initiation and expressive symbolic communication skills. This descriptive, multicase, mixed methods study investigated changes in teacher shared reading practices and perspectives, as well as the communication skills of students with extensive support needs associated with completing professional development focused on a responsive and interactive approach to shared reading. The sample included four classroom teachers and 13 students with extensive support needs in one rural, public elementary school. Teachers increased their use of targeted interactive shared reading practices from 50% to 90%. Students increased the number of expressive communication skills they exhibited ( p = .031, r = .60), as well as the highest level of their symbolic communication ( z = 2.16, p = .031, r = .60). Thematic analysis of teacher interviews identified shifts in their perceptions of their role, expectations, and ability to support student communication development during shared reading, which converged with the changes noted from fall to spring during observations of teacher practice and students’ communication skills during shared reading.

Picture communication symbols and voice symbols: iconicity and preference among healthy older adults in Taiwan

Purpose: Unaided (e.g., speech and gestures) and aided (e.g., symbol corpuses) communication modes facilitate older adults’ expression and comprehension. Adults aged 65 years and above constituted 18.27% of Taiwan’s total population in 2023; hence, prioritizing high-quality healthcare for older adults becomes critical. Commercial symbol corpuses, such as Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) and Voice Symbols (VS), play a vital role in aiding older adults with expression and comprehension in Taiwan. Previous studies on iconicity and preference of symbol corpuses have primarily been conducted in Western and South Asian cultural communities. However, these findings may not apply to all Asian communities. Hence, studies investigating these aspects in specific communities are needed. Through quantitative nonexperimental observations, we explored the iconicity of and preference for PCS and VS among 30 healthy older adults in Taiwan. Materials and Methods: A total of 12 practice words and test words each, familiar to the participants and socially and culturally validated, were selected for the developed VS–PCS iconicity and preference measurement. Verbal choices were made to select one line drawing in both measurements. Results & Conclusions: The findings revealed that VS is significantly more transparent and preferred than PCS. Accounting for the iconicity of and preferences for symbol corpuses is pivotal for symbol selection.

Does symbolic AI-related disclosure influence CEO promotion? Evidence from state-owned enterprises in China

ABSTRACT This paper considers firms’ artificial intelligence (AI)-related discretionary disclosure to examine whether symbolic communications of AI influences a CEO’s chance of career advancement in Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs). We find a positive relationship between symbolic AI disclosure and the possibility of managers getting promoted. Our main finding is more salient when a firm’s achievement of policy goals is more crucial, its financial performance is relatively poor, and a manager has more urgent promotion needs. Results imply that CEOs engage in impression management via managerial discretionary disclosure to strengthen organizational legitimacy and build a favourable impression, which may increase their probability of getting promoted.

Delivering Enhanced Milieu Teaching to Toddlers With Down Syndrome via Hybrid Telepractice: A Single-Case Experimental Design.

This pilot study investigated delivering enhanced milieu teaching tailored for children with Down Syndrome (EMT-DS) through hybrid telepractice. In this multiple-baseline design across behaviors study, a speech-language pathologist (SLP) taught EMT-DS to three caregivers and their children with DS (22-40 months) using a hybrid service delivery model. Sessions were conducted in person and via telepractice. The SLP taught caregivers EMT-DS, emphasizing the use of (a) four target EMT strategies: matched turns, expansions, time delays, and milieu teaching episodes; (b) augmentative and alternative communication (AAC; manual signs, speech-generating device); and (c) aided AAC modeling. The SLP provided caregiver instruction following the teach-model-coach-review approach. Caregiver outcomes were the accuracy (primary) and frequency (secondary) of EMT strategy use. Child outcomes were exploratory and included the rate of symbolic communication acts, weighted number of communication acts, and number of different words (NDW). There was a functional relation between the intervention and the accuracy and frequency of EMT strategy use for all three caregivers. All caregivers showed an increase in the accuracy for all four target strategies. Caregivers also increased the frequency of the three EMT strategies: expansions, time delays, and milieu teaching episodes. There were no changes in the frequency of matched turns. Caregiver use of EMT strategies maintained for 6 weeks post-intervention. After caregivers learned EMT strategies, gradual increases in the rate of symbolic communication acts and NDW occurred for all three children. Transformation of Environmental Education in Sennu-Sennureng Maccera Tappareng of Tempe Lake Wajo Regency: Sacred To Profane

This study aims to analyze immanent environmental education in sennu-sennureng maccera tappareng in this context is a reaffirmation of human commitment in preserving the environment. The method used in this field of research is qualitative research with a phenomenological paradigm. The interview and observation data were then analyzed by data reduction, data exposure, and conclusions/verification. Research findings show that senna-ensuring in the implementation of mascara apparent is loaded with environmental education as a form of symbolic communication built between communities inhabiting the shores of Tempe Lake Wajo Regency to maintain environmental sustainability, which in this case is divided into senna-ensuring mappalao baccara, senna-ensuring mannini pammali, and senna-ensuring mappable ise wanna. These sennu-sennureng are an inseparable part of transforming various sacred dimensions into profane. Something that was initially only the value of the relationship between man and the Creator developed into a relationship between man and man himself or the environment, which can be said to be a form of the transformative meaning of each stage in the mascara apparent procession. Immanent environmental education in sennu-sennureng maccera tappareng must continue to be preserved by continuing to actively transform sacred values into profane.

The Power of Handwriting for Self-Expressions and Learning Optimization

Now days most students did not want to make a note anymore by handwriting for their study or when they listen to the lecture in class, and they rely more on digital devices for their lecture activities. The aim of this research was to understand and explain about the utility of handwriting for the process of study and learning, on the other hand, handwriting was also a tool for self-expression, and in the future, it was necessary to preserve handwriting skills. Base on theory of symbolic interactionism by Blumer, that by giving meaning to symbols, human can express things with language, which in turn, symbols form the basis of communication. And further humans used their hands and fingers to produce and develop the communication symbols needed, whether in the form of pictures, paintings, or written letters. Through qualitative research by conducting observations and interviews with 25 students at three universities in Jakarta, and equipped with digital literature study, the research results found that For learning optimizations, it has been proven that the ability to write manually will really help children and students learn fluently, especially in improving memory and helping students focus more on learning. Also known that handwriting a tool for self-expression and creativity, where the writing process will form uniqueness and personal character. Conclusion Policies and methods of learning process needed for preserve handwriting skills.

Hijrah Youth Virtual Communication Representation on Social Media

Self and group identity can be built through social media, including religious identity. Instagram can be used for various content regarding Islam, such as content from the youth community of hijrah which contains symbols of Islamic religious messages. This kind of community can be a solution to overcome problems that arise due to differences in perceptions about religion in society. This research aims to examine: 1) The values contained in communication symbols in the Millennial Muslim Youth Community’s Social Media, and 2) the experience of interacting among millennial Muslim youth on social media with Islamic religious content. The method used in this study is a qualitative method and a virtual ethnographic approach. The data were obtained through interviews, observation, literature studies, and relevant documentation. The research informants are community managers of hijrah youth, millennial youth active on social media, and hijrah community social media observers. This research is an implementation of the flagship topic of research at the Islamic University of Bandung. Furthermore, special topics based on these strategic issues are related to research on the impact of technology on human behavior and human relations. The results of the study show: 1. The values contained in the communication symbols on the social media of the millennial Muslim youth community are symbols that are closer to young people who are relaxed, fun, and do not seem hard to study religion. 2. Symbolic Communication of the Tuntung Pandang (Kondang) Skullcap as a Regional Symbol of Tanah Laut Regency

This study collected data through analysis of the Tanah Laut Regency news portal which reviewed the Regent's use of the Tuntung Pandang skullcap at various official events. A qualitative approach was used to explore the symbolic meanings contained in this skullcap and how society received and communicated these meanings. The research results show that the Tuntung Pandang Kopiah is not just traditional clothing or a symbol of formality, but is also an important marker of cultural identity for the people of Tanah Laut. This symbol contains values ​​such as tradition, authority, and courage which are closely related to the position of Regent. This research provides a new contribution by describing the complex relationship between the symbol (Tuntung Pandang skullcap), the object (Regent of Tanah Laut), and the community's interpretation or understanding of the symbol. Through the approach of Peirce's semiotic theory and Ogden and Richards' Triangle Theory, this research highlights that cultural symbols not only have aesthetic value but are also an important tool in building the social and cultural identity of a community. This research also explores the meanings implicit in the use of symbols and how these symbols play a role in building identity and social solidarity in local communities.. Study on Symbol Selection Ability According to AAC Symbol Types for Patients with Dementia of Alzheimer’s Type

Objectives: This study aimed to establish evidence for effective (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) AAC intervention approaches for patients with dementia of Alzheimer’s type (DAT) by examining whether the severity of dementia and the symbol type used in AAC tools affect symbol selection. Additionally, we aimed to investigate the relationship between symbol selection ability and language and cognitive abilities. Methods: Twenty-one normal elderly individuals, 17 patients diagnosed with mild DAT, and 20 patients with moderate to severe DAT were recruited. A symbol selection task was conducted using the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Symbol Assessment Tool (AAC-SAT). Participants selected target symbols on the screen consisting of graphic symbols, photos, and written words in response to auditory prompts given by the examiner. Data from the tasks were statistically analyzed for accuracy and response time, and correlation analyses were conducted for cognitive and language abilities. Results: The moderate to severe DAT group showed significantly lower accuracy and longer response times in symbol selection compared to the mild DAT group and normal elderly group. Upon examining each group separately, both mild and moderate to severe DAT groups showed no symbol type that was advantageous for symbol selection. However, the rapid response to photos observed in mild DAT group disappeared in the moderate to severe DAT group. Additionally, the symbol selection ability of DAT patients significantly deteriorated as language and cognitive abilities declined. Conclusion: Appropriate symbol types for AAC aimed at facilitating effective communication considering the language and cognitive abilities of DAT patients were suggested, and the findings of this study were compared with the claims made by previous research.

Indigenous Embodied Activism and Memory Politics for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

This study aims to understand material and symbolic communication approaches surrounding Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), and the Indigenous and feminist memory work to honor MMIW. Indigenous women and girls in Canada have gone missing and have been murdered at six times the rate of their non-Indigenous counterparts. First Nations and Indigenous communities in Canada have engaged in protests and memory activism to raise awareness of violence against Indigenous women and seek increased support from the criminal justice system. Following an Indigenist and decolonizing memory work methodological approach developed by Gail Baikie (Inuit) and the rhetoric of survivance of Gerald Vizenor (Anishaabe), we analyze the Search the Landfill current protests at the Prairie Green landfill north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Winnipeg police reported they believe four MMIW women’s remains are in the landfill. The study is vitally important as these protests and Indigenous advocacy efforts have never been analyzed and efforts continue to unfold. Analysis centers on public discourse on MMIW, counter/memory resistant efforts, embodied activisms of the protestors, efforts to silence and—literally—bury MMIW, and an understanding of how memory activism can amplify hushed narratives and energize counterattacks against erasures of memory.

Through meticulous analysis of these exhibits, the study reveals the intricate cultural narratives they convey, thus emphasizing the critical role museums play in facilitating profound cross-cultural understanding, nurturing meaningful cultural dialogue, and shaping both individual and collective cultural identities. By showcasing objects rich in historical significance, aesthetic beauty, and societal values, museums emerge as dynamic platforms for cultural interpretation and exchange, effectively bridging cultural divides and promoting mutual understanding amidst the diverse tapestry of global cultures.

The origin and function of external representations

External representations ( ERs) are objects or performances in the world whose proper function is to communicate about other things in the world. Why and how did we make them, and what do they give us? We outline a simple framework for thinking about ERs grounded in modern machine learning. We propose a minimal set of neural mechanisms needed for open-ended ER production. Our constructivist enactive view contrasts with nativist views which propose specialist neural modules requiring symbolic internal representations. We propose a plausible set of (biological and cultural) evolutionary steps to full Gricean symbolic communication via a set of increasingly complex enactive algorithms for ER production. A pragmatic space of games is defined, which includes not only fully cooperative language games but also science, art, and evolved signal manipulation games. This space is defined by the complexity of learning needed by sender and receiver. We propose that one important step towards open-ended ER use was selection for bush reading, which like mind-reading is an inferential process requiring complex contextual and syntactic understanding of cues about events displaced in space and time. Bush reading pre-adapted receivers to be receptive, competent, and perspicacious interpreters of later intentionally produced signals about hidden topics such as felt mental states. This paved the way for minimally Gricean communication, which subsequently could be bootstrapped into explicit theories of mind, folk psychology narratives, and symbolic language in general. Recent findings in cognitive archaeology are integrated within the framework, and new experiments in machine learning suggested.

REOG BULKIYO DANCE: TRADITION AND HISTORICAL REPRESENTATION OF THE JAVA WAR

The Java War, often known as De Javasche Oorlog or Diponegoro War, was an event that had an impact on national and local history. The capture of Prince Diponegoro by the Dutch on March 28, 1830, resulted in many of his troops fleeing to remote areas to avoid Dutch capture. As a result of the escape they settled in an area, disguised as ordinary people. One of the places where Diponegoro's troops escaped was in Kemloko village, Nglegok sub-district, Blitar district. The mind of the soldiers who managed to escape had a work of art in the form of Reog Bulkiyo Dance. The purpose of this study was to determine the history of the formation of Reog Bulkiyo Dance, the characteristics of Reog Bulkiyo dance, the existence of Reog Bulkiyo dance. This research uses a historical method consisting of (1). Heuristics, (2). Criticism, (3). Interpretation, (4). Historiography. The approach is carried out using cultural anthropology and the theory of cultural forms according to Koentjaraningrat to understand the origin of the creation of Bulkiyo reog dance as a form of expression, a symbol of communication and humanity to fight Dutch colonialism. The results of this study show that there are several historical facts about the emergence of Bulkiyo Reog Dance in Kemloko Village, Nglegok Subdistrict, Blitar Regency. The characteristics of Bulkiyo reog dance are influenced by Javanese, Arabic and Chinese cultures, this can be seen from the attributes and equipment used, the existence of Bulkiyo reog dance is influenced by internal factors of the Genealogical Inheritance system, and external factors of support from the community, government, and academics.

Guessability of Indian picture symbols for communication (IPSC) and picture communication symbols (PCS) among Malayalam-speaking typical adults

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived symbol referent relationship for selected symbols in typical adults for two different symbol sets: Indian Picture Symbols for Communication (IPSC) and Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) to identify cultural influences on symbol recognition. A total of 240 typical adults, including 120 nonprofessionals, and 120 health professionals, from Kerala, a southern state in India, participated in the study. A guessability task involving IPSC and PCS symbols for 30 target referents was utilized. Guessability scores for each participant as well as each symbol stimuli across two symbol sets were determined. The guessability scores for IPSC were significantly (p <.001) higher than PCS. For both symbol sets, nouns were the most accurately guessed, followed by verbs, adjectives, and prepositions. The results also revealed that prompting and previous exposure to symbols tend to influence the transparency of symbols. Error analyses revealed that visual and conceptual cues within a symbol tend to influence guessability. The results indicate that cultural and linguistic factors play a role in symbol guessability. The study highlights the importance of investigating the iconicity of IPSC and PCS symbols across different populations within India, before using symbols for educational/clinical purposes.
