The swinglock removable partial denture (RPD) is an invaluable aid for some treatment planning dilemmas. Indications for swinglock RPDs include the use of undercuts not possible with other partial denture designs, the use and stabilization of weakened key abutment teeth, reduction of tooth mobility, prosthetic elimination of periodontal esthetic defects, and the ability to restore at least partial function for some patients undergoing ablative oncology surgery. While this is an effective treatment modality when indicated, there are a small number of patients who lack the ability to manipulate the latch mechanism, usually due to age or medical conditions. In some very rare situations, both the patient and caretaker lack this ability. The authors recently encountered this scenario, and the solution was to devise a swinglock aid to help an elderly couple cope with this prescribed design. This modification of a design proposed by LaBell and Glassman offers portability, concealment, and elimination of the potentially hazardous open loop.
