Sustainability in Action: Green Infrastructure as a Marker of Sustainable Urban Development

The current form and pace of urbanization is an ongoing threat to sustainable urban development. As these problems span social, environmental, and economic realms, it is imperative that any proposed solution is able to address these problems holistically. Although a number of silver-bullet solutions such as electric vehicle adoption have been introduced, they do not respond to the problems with an integrated approach. Tackling this problem will require a solution that can be changed and applied on a case-by-case basis. Therefore, the development of green infrastructure is the most efficient solution when responding to the problems threatening urban sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to argue for the efficacy of green infrastructure methods by analyzing the evidence provided about factors like temperature and pollution levels in green cities as compared to other proposed solutions, and to explore critiques of green infrastructure and discuss their potential improvements. The research provided contains a mixture of case studies, participant surveys, and other scientific findings and has the potential to make green infrastructure a priority in the future planning of cities.

A Bibliometric Analysis of the Outdoor Thermal Environment Based on CiteSpace

The outdoor thermal environment (OTE) is closely related to sustainable urban development and human living, and related research has attracted widespread attention. The research hotspots and research frontiers were obtained using CiteSpace to analyze 4473 relevant studies published in English from the Web of Science (WOS) core database from 1998 to 2023. The results show that (1) Hong Kong Polytechnic University, National University of Singapore, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, and Harbin Institute of Technology are important in OTE research. China has the largest number of publications in the field of OTE, but the United States has the greatest centrality and significant influence. (2) The focus of OTE keyword clustering research is divided into four main categories: thermal environment perception, the thermal environment index, thermal environment quality, and thermal environment optimization. (3) The frontiers of OTE research have changed from focusing on environmental quality, thermal perception, numerical simulation, urban space, and thermal adaptation to thermal mitigation, energy conservation, energy consumption, and optimization strategies. Visualization research in the field of OTE helps to provide references for the direction of future research on improving climate change, human thermal comfort, urban planning, and pre-planning.

Gender mainstreaming in urban projects: A measurement proposal applied to Spanish Urban regeneration policies

Urban policies financed in the framework of the European Cohesion Policy are a privileged area for the study of the Gender Mainstreaming (GM) due to the gender European rules and to the importance of the European Union in urban development. The aim of this paper is to validate an instrument for the systematic measurement of the application of the GM tool, and to evaluate the implementation of GM in Spanish urban policies financed by the EU. For this purpose, based on previous measurements and analysis, a specific methodological tool has been elaborated and applied to the 89 urban intervention projects implemented in Spanish big cities in the framework of the URBAN I, URBAN II, URBANA, and ISUD (Integral and Sustainable Urban Development) calls for proposals (1994–2020). The results reflect a sectorial orientation in the application of the GM. Moreover, we observed a more significant implementation of the strategy in the direction setting dimensions and a scarcer integration in the actor-oriented dimensions. The dimensions' scores could reflect the classic difficulties for actor-oriented dimensions in urban policy design and the effect of the EU's lack of clarity about gender equality on a multi-level governance policy.

Positive or Negative: The Heterogeneities in the Effects of Urban Regeneration on Surrounding Economic Vitality—From the Perspective of Housing Price

Urban regeneration is a sound, sustainable urban development strategy globally. In China, promoting urban regeneration has become the national sustainable urban strategy. Under the resource constraint, it is necessary to understand what benefits different types of urban regeneration projects can contribute to urban development. Much research has contributed to evaluating the benefits of urban regeneration on the project scale. The systematic investigation of their effects on surrounding economic vitality, especially the comparison between different types of projects, is relatively downplayed. This paper aims to evaluate and compare the effects of urban regeneration projects on surrounding economic vitality by calculating the change in housing prices. Chongqing is selected as the case city. Based on the housing transaction data from 2015 to 2021, a staggered difference-in-difference method is employed to capture the results. The finding shows that the overall effects are significantly negative, especially within a 400–800 m radius. Higher investment or better project location relates to stronger negative effects. Moreover, the differences in effects among the three types of urban regeneration projects are clearly revealed from diverse perspectives. It provides a valuable reference for policymakers and urban planners to make urban regeneration planning better by considering comprehensive benefits.

Trends and Future Directions in Research on the Protection of Traditional Village Cultural Heritage in Urban Renewal

The process of urbanization has accelerated economic growth while also presenting social challenges. Urban renewal is crucial for achieving sustainable urban development, especially by preserving traditional villages as cultural heritage sites within cities. This study employs Python algorithm programming and visual analysis functions to conduct a bibliometric analysis of 408 research papers on the preservation of traditional village cultural heritage in urban renewal from 1999 to 2023 in the Web of Science core database. The objective is to examine the historical background, current status, and future trends in this area. The analysis explores cooperation networks, co-citation relationships, co-occurrence patterns, and emerging characteristics of research on traditional village cultural heritage protection in urban renewal. It focuses on various aspects, such as authors, institutions, countries, journals, documents, and keywords. The results indicate that the study of traditional village cultural heritage protection in urban renewal can be divided into three developmental stages. “Sustainable development”, “cultural heritage”, “historic urban landscapes”, and “rural revitalization” are the research hotspots and future trends in this field. The results of this study provide a comprehensive overview of the evolution of research hotspots in this field and can help researchers willing to work in this research area quickly understand the research frontiers and the general situation.

Research on Satellite and Ground Multi-Sensor Collaborative Sensing Method for Floating Plants

Abstract. Dynamic monitoring of water environment is the basis of maintaining urban security and promoting urban sustainable development. To effectively solve the problems caused by the large-scale flooding of floating aquatic invasive plants, such as water environment destruction, clogging river, water quality pollution, water ecological balance destruction, etc., a satellite and ground multi-sensor collaborative sensing method for floating plants is proposed in this paper. For the monitoring of floating plants in macro watershed, the vegetation index and chlorophyll concentration were used to extract floating plants, analyzing, and calculating the distribution and coverage area of floating plants based on 4-band high-resolution satellite images. For the monitoring of floating plants in small watershed, combined with visible light video, multispectral images, and LiDAR data, optimized spectral feature variable processing, semantic segmentation network, and symmetric function neural network are utilized to obtain real-time information on the invasion location, distribution pattern, and coverage area of floating plants. In this paper, the upstream basin of the Huangpu River in Shanghai in 2023 was selected as the experimental area. The distribution of floating plants in different watercourse and different periods was successfully obtained by this method, and the coverage area was accurately calculated with an identification rate of more than 90%, which provided technical support for cross-regional management and efficient cleaning of floating plants.

Commoning the compact city: The role of old and new commons in urban development

Although densification is generally seen to contribute to more sustainable urban development, it is often linked to market-oriented and for-profit development, contributing to the enclosure of urban space. We analyse how densification can take a different path through processes of commoning. We particularly aim to understand how commoning initiatives can contribute to new institutional arrangements that counteract enclosure and commodification in densification. We furthermore aim to contribute to conceptual clarity in the debate on urban commons by emphasizing the different roles of so-called ‘old’ and ‘new’ commons in urban development. Our analytical framework builds on a new institutionalist approach which stresses the analysis of localized and temporary institutional arrangements negotiated among actors in a given situation. We rely on a detailed case-study of a densification project in the city of Bern (Switzerland), where publicly-owned land was redeveloped into cooperative housing and urban green space. Our findings show how densification leads to a transition phase in which institutional arrangements defining land uses and allocating access and use rights are renegotiated. These are crucial moments where processes of commoning can shape the outcome of densification, although not independently from the supportive action of the public actor. We underline the potential of new commons, even when typically transitional, unstable, and temporary. Contrary to old commons, their potential lies not so much in the ability for long-lasting resource management, but rather in the capacity to change the conditions of governance during the transition between land uses, advancing more socially-sustainable outcomes in a key moment of the urban redevelopment process.

Improved urbanization-vegetation cover coordination associated with economic level in port cities along the Maritime Silk Road

The sustainability of port cities affects the competitiveness of their hinterland in international shipping and maritime trade, however, the coordinated relationship between urbanization and ecological environment in port cities has received less attention. In this study, we quantitatively analyzed the urban expansion process and vegetation cover changes in 44 port cities along the Maritime Silk Road during 2000–2020 based on multi-source remote sensing data. Adopting the urbanization-vegetation cover index (UVCI), we measured the coordination relationship between urban expansion and vegetation cover and the dynamics during 2000–2020. The results found that all port cities experienced dramatic development from 2000 to 2020, with an average increase in artificial surface area of 127.81%. The 63.64% of port cities experienced increased vegetation cover, thus the overall UVCI in the port city moved toward a more coordinated and sustainable pattern with significant heterogeneity at the economic levels. High-economy port cities have generally become more coordinated, while most low- and medium-economy cities still face challenges of conflicting urban expansion and ecological preservation. This study contributes to the development of government policies that support green and sustainable urban development in port cities, and provides insights for rationalizing development policies in port cities worldwide.

Decoupling the multi-drivers of urban extreme heat environment in urban agglomerations using ensemble learning

Urban extreme heat (UEH) has been imparting a formidable menace to various facets of sustainable urban and regional development. While increasing studies have examined the urban thermal environment, a gap exists in decoupling the nonlinear multi-drivers of UEH environment in intra-urban regions, especially across the urban agglomerations. In this study, we estimated UEH through the land surface temperature (LST) in the extended summer season exceeding a specific threshold computed through cross-regional statistics. Furthermore, an additive interpretable ensemble learning model enhanced via the Bayesian Optimization algorithm (BO) and Monte Carlo Simulation framework (MCS) was employed to dissect the intricate nonlinear interplay between UEH and intra-urban morphology, green-blue composition, and atmospheric determinants. Our results highlight the indispensably suppressive effect of green and blue factors on UEH, whereas urban morphological variables generally exhibit an opposite trend. Interestingly, we reveal heterogeneity responses of building heights, elevated urban structures mitigate UEH in temperate monsoon and subtropical monsoon zones and exhibit diminished marginal utility in temperate continental zones. Furthermore, the arid climatic characteristics are expected to exert an unexpectedly enhancing effect on water bodies' cooling capacity. These findings provide heterogeneous local guidance for landscape and urban planning towards the severe challenges of climate change.

Deep Siamese Network for annual change detection in Beijing using Landsat satellite data

The detection of spatiotemporal changes in land use/land cover (LULC-SC) plays a paramount role in the analysis of smart cities, it can describe complex urban distribution, functions, and patterns. Chinas capital city has been developing rapidly in the past two decades, however, there are only few long-term studies on an annual scale of LULC-SC. To fill this research gap, we propose a remote sensing parallel framework for the detection of LULC-SC based on the combination of the Deep Siamese Network and long time series, which focuses on the spatial semantic information at the object level. A Landsat time series from 2002 to 2022 serves as input satellite data. First, we focus on building graph constructions at the object level and then use an autonomously constructed deeper-feature graph convolutional network (DF-GCN) to mine deeper features, spatial semantic, and relationships at the object level. Finally, the Siamese Network recognizes the changes in the spatial semantic tensors of long time series of Landsat images and quickly maps LULC-SC. The results prove that the proposed spatiotemporal change detection framework is effective in LULC-SC in Beijing. Compared with other networks, the optimal accuracy of semantic mining based on DF-GCN can reach about 90%. Over the past two decades, the LULC-SC of Beijing has changed in a complex way, with urbanization occurring primarily through the replacement of farmland. Consequently, the proposed framework can generate accurate LULC change maps at high temporal frequencies, which can contribute to a better comprehension of sustainable urban development and planning.

Towards setting a standard for evaluating living labs with case studies in Turkiye

The article highlights the significance of understanding success criteria by gathering data from key stakeholders associated with Basaksehir Living Lab, Bodrum Living Lab and Mezopotamya Living Lab via the in-depth interview method. These interviews aim to gain insights into how these living labs have addressed and incorporated the identified success criteria within their initiatives and to understand the impact and outcomes they have achieved in their respective contexts. The interviews reveal valuable insights and lessons learned that could inform the design and implementation of future lab initiatives. Furthermore, the findings contribute to the existing knowledge base on ULLs, shedding light on their potential to address urban challenges, foster collaboration, and drive sustainable urban development. However, there is a literature gap in terms of a comprehensive understanding of the success criteria specific to ULLs, which hinders the effective utilization of ULLs as platforms for addressing urban challenges. The conclusions drawn from the article emphasize the need for further examination of these labs' openness, user empowerment, and transferability criteria. Nevertheless, the article contributes to understanding the success criteria of ULLs and provides insights for future research and practice.

Comparison of mass timber structure and RC structure with regard to sustainability by life cycle assessment

Since the 18th-century Industrial Revolution, high-rise have played a crucial role in addressing urbanization challenges, remaining a primary solution for urban living. However, this architectural advancement has also contributed to environmental decline. Presently, steel and concrete stand out as the predominant materials for high-rise construction, with well-documented significant carbon emissions. This paper delves into the potential of timber as an environmentally friendly alternative in high-rise construction to address such environmental concerns. Furthermore, it examines the impact of these structures on land load. The paper conducts a comprehensive review of life cycle assessment (LCA) studies and offers a comparative analysis of the climate change impacts associated with timber versus conventional materials like reinforced concrete (RC), underscoring the urgent need for sustainable development in the vertical expansion of our cities. The findings demonstrate that both the mass and carbon emissions of high-rise timber structures, in comparison to RC structures, can be reduced by approximately half. The paper aims to underscore the benefits of timber in comparison to conventional reinforced concrete methods, thereby informing material selection in favor of sustainable urban development.

An assessment of urban park accessibility using multi‐source data in Hefei, China: A social equity perspective

AbstractUrban parks are vital to enhance human well‐being and encourage sustainable urban development. However, the supply–demand match between the layout of urban parks and various social groups needs to be addressed. Therefore, this study quantitatively evaluates urban park accessibility using house‐level data from the social equity perspective in Hefei, China. A real‐time navigation route measurement based on the Amap application programming interface was taken advantage of to calculate green space travel time costs‐accessibility, and a combination of the Gaussian‐based two‐step floating catchment area method and measurement model to analyze supply–demand accessibility. On the other hand, housing price was used to indicate dwellers' socioeconomic status. The Gini coefficient, Lorenz curve, and bivariate correlation were adopted to explore the inequality of green space accessibility among residential communities. The results reveal a spatial inequality of green space between communities in the central portion of the Hefei and those in peri‐urban areas. We further found a spatial mismatch between green space resources and population distribution. At the same time, there is a significant correlation between green space accessibility and housing prices, which means the disadvantaged urban strata with low economic income face a supply shortage, while wealthier communities benefit more from green space accessibility. Hence, based on the evaluation results, the author proposes feasible optimization strategies for constructing urban parks in Hefei and can inform policy decisions regarding future park construction.

The Impact of Changes in Rural Family Structure on Agricultural Productivity and Efficiency: Evidence from Rice Farmers in China

Over the past three decades, China has shifted from a relatively immobile society to one where rural migrant workers are dispersed throughout urban areas, resulting in significant changes in rural family structure. Previous studies have tended to approach migrant workers as homogeneous groups within families. In contrast, our attention turns to the diversity among individuals and the complex interactions within families. Based on a survey of rice farmers in five provinces of China, this study aims to explore the heterogeneous impact of changes in rural family structure on the single-factor (i.e., land, labor, and capital) productivity and technical efficiency (TE) of rice production. Methodologically, we calculated the productivity indicator through the Cobb–Douglas production function. Following this, a one-step stochastic frontier approach (SFA) was employed to assess the production frontier and estimate inefficiency. To address self-selection bias in family migration behavior, we applied the propensity score matching method (PSM). The results reveal that significant outcomes are observed only with certain types of changes in rural family structure. The production decisions of rural families are influenced by the migration regions of their family members. Compared to non-migrating families (NM), families with couples’ joint migration outside the province show higher single-factor productivity and TE. We used multiple approaches to examine the results and came to similar conclusions. Therefore, enhancing social security measures and employment opportunities for migrant workers, with specific attention to supporting migrant couples, can have a positive impact on sustainable urban and rural development, as well as food security.

Study on the Spatiotemporal Evolution and Driving Factors of Ecological Security in Stages Based on the DPSIRM-SBM Model: A Case Study of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

Scientific assessment of urban ecological security (ES) is an important prerequisite to realize regional sustainable development. Previous studies lack the consideration of quality and poor systematic correlation, which could not reflect the internal dynamic relationship. On the basis of considering the time lag, this study divided the research process into the natural operation stage and the management feedback stage based on the driving forces, pressures, state, impacts, responses, management (DPSIRM) framework model and DEA theory, so as to effectively overcome the above shortcomings. Finally, we analyzed the spatio-temporal characteristics and influencing factors of the ES level of 108 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) during 2005-2019. The results showed that: (a) both two stages showed a slow and fluctuating upward trend in time series, and the level of urban ES in the management feedback stage was significantly higher than that in the natural operation stage; (b) with the passage of time, the spatial distribution of ES in the natural operation stage gradually developed towards the middle and downstream of the YREB, while the management feedback stage mainly evolved from the midstream to the edge area; (c) the level of urban ES presented a different degree of spatial agglomeration phenomenon, and showed an increasing trend over time; and (d) the key influencing factors gradually changed from pressure to response during 2005-2019. This research aims to provide an innovative perspective for the measurement of urban ES, and provide scientific reference for improving urban ecological sustainable development.

A Multi-Feature Fusion Method for Urban Functional Regions Identification: A Case Study of Xi’an, China

Research on the identification of urban functional regions is of great significance for the understanding of urban structure, spatial planning, resource allocation, and promoting sustainable urban development. However, achieving high-precision urban functional region recognition has always been a research challenge in this field. For this purpose, this paper proposes an urban functional region identification method called ASOE (activity–scene–object–economy), which integrates the features from multi-source data to perceive the spatial differentiation of urban human and geographic elements. First, we utilize VGG16 (Visual Geometry Group 16) to extract high-level semantic features from the remote sensing images with 1.2 m spatial resolution. Then, using scraped building footprints, we extract building object features such as area, perimeter, and structural ratios. Socioeconomic features and population activity features are extracted from Point of Interest (POI) and Weibo data, respectively. Finally, integrating the aforementioned features and using the Random Forest method for classification, the identification results of urban functional regions in the main urban area of Xi’an are obtained. After comparing with the actual land use map, our method achieves an identification accuracy of 91.74%, which is higher than other comparative methods, making it effectively identify four typical urban functional regions in the main urban area of Xi’an (e.g., residential regions, industrial regions, commercial regions, and public regions). The research indicates that the method of fusing multi-source data can fully leverage the advantages of big data, achieving high-precision identification of urban functional regions.

Efficiency of energy-generating tiles with different types of multipliers

Problem. With the urgent need for sustainable and renewable energy solutions, the integration of energy-harvesting technologies in urban infrastructure has become a focal point of innovation. Energy-generating tiles, transforming pedestrian movement into electricity, offer a viable path forward. Yet, their efficiency hinges on the internal design, particularly the type of multipliers used. Goal. This study aims to assess and compare the efficiency of energy-generating tiles equipped with helical and straight-cut gear multipliers, to identify the optimal design for maximizing energy conversion in urban environments. Methodology. An experimental setup was created to test prototypes of the energy-generating tiles under controlled foot traffic conditions. The study measured and analyzed the electrical output and efficiency of tiles with both types of gear multipliers, simulating real pedestrian traffic scenarios. Results. Energy-generating tiles featuring straight-cut gears outperformed those with helical gears in energy output and conversion efficiency. The research also illuminated the influence of pedestrian dynamics, like step force and frequency, on tile performance. Originality. This research advances renewable energy technology by offering a comprehensive analysis of energy-generating tile efficiency with different gear multipliers. It introduces an innovative method for evaluating tile performance, underscoring the significance of gear design in energy conversion. Practical value. The findings have considerable implications for sustainable urban development, suggesting that implementing energy-generating tiles in areas with high foot traffic could significantly enhance urban renewable energy sources. This study not only guides the design of more efficient energy-harvesting tiles but also encourages their broader adoption, supporting urban sustainability goals and the reduction of carbon emissions.

Compact city and urban planning: Correlation between density and local amenities

Many scholars and planners emphasise the role of compact cities in sustainable urban development. Compact urban form is seen as a way to encourage people, for example, to drive less and walk more, which reduces transport-related GHG emissions. This argument, however, is strongly dependent on local amenity development that can support such local living. In plan-making, a common practice is to try to ensure the realisation of services with a high Gross Floor Area (GFA) residential infill development to raise the local population density. In this paper we are seeking quantitative insight on the resolution under which urban density, as measured by GFA volume, correlates with the growth of urban amenities and liveability. Specifically, we are seeking the direction in which correlation changes when moving from a larger geographical scale (low resolution) towards a smaller scale (high resolution) of walkable reach. Our study shows a clear correlation between urban amenities and planned GFA at low-resolution scales, but that correlation decreases at higher-resolution scales (walkable neighbourhood level), indicating that urban amenities tend to cluster in different locations than density is planned. Based on these findings, we argue that, if the aim of urban planning is to foster the growth of local amenities, it should shift its focus towards larger patterns of urban development rather than emphasising GFA in detailed plan-making.

Blueprints for Progress: Unveiling the Pillars of Urban Evolution in Contemporary American Metropolises

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of urban development dynamics within the United States, using a dataset provided by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). The study aims to identify and understand the factors that significantly affect urban growth and sustainability. Through rigorous preprocessing and validation processes, including factor analysis and comparative studies, the study examined variables such as infrastructure development, forms of local government, regional influences, and service provisions. The results highlighted the critical role of infrastructure development in urban growth, with a strong correlation between well-developed infrastructure and sustainable urban development. The form of government and regional characteristics also emerged as influential factors, affecting policy formulation and resource allocation. Notably, services provided by local governments were found to be crucial in supporting urban development. This study sheds light on the complexities of urban development dynamics and offers insights into how policy, governance, and infrastructure impact urban growth and sustainability. It underscores the necessity for tailored approaches that consider local contexts and the specific needs of urban populations. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research, emphasizing the need for longitudinal studies, qualitative insights, and policy impact assessments to build upon the findings and support the development of effective urban development strategies.
