UNVEILING THE ENIGMA OF LOCAL WISDOM-BASED TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN SUROWITI VILLAGE, GRESIK REGENCY

Within the framework of community empowerment and sustainable development, this study presents a novel model for harnessing the potential of village tourism in Surowiti Village, Gresik Regency. The model pivots on the exploration of local wisdom to engender an authentic and sustainable tourism ex- perience. Employing a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews and participatory observation, this research illuminates the substantial existence of a rich reservoir of local wisdom, encompassing traditions, culture, and sustainable practices, that endures within Surowiti Village. The proposed village tourism development model adeptly interweaves constituents of local wisdom into the tourism experi- ence, yielding palpable positive ramifications for both the local populace and the surrounding environ- ment. The implications of this study underscore the pivotal importance of fostering local community empowerment, preserving cultural heritage, and advocating for sustainable tourism promotion. The model proffered herein exhibits substantial potential for adoption by diverse communities and govern- mental bodies in their pursuit of cultivating enduringly sustainable village tourism, yielding significant positive socio-economic impacts.

Management perspectives for ecomuseums effectiveness: a holistic approach to sociocultural development of local areas

Considering their focus on participation and sustainable tourism promotion, ecomuseums can play a crucial role in the sociocultural development of local areas. Through three exploratory case studies of Italian ecomuseums located in the Emilia-Romagna region, this study shows the emergence of three different profiles of ecomuseum development strategies: they relate to the sustainable tourism, the cultural districts, and the holistic approach to sociocultural development. These kinds of strategic profiles not only emerge in opposition to each other but can also overlap and appear jointly within different situations of ecomuseums. The final aim of this work is to reflect on the applicability of management tools to support the implementation of these strategic aspects, especially in the current scenario, in which new perspectives are emerging about the role of communities in interpreting and enhancing their tangible and intangible cultural heritage in relation to sustainable tourism and local development linked to cultural and natural heritage preservation and promotion.

Developing a scale for tourism literacy: validity and reliability study

ABSTRACT Tourism literacy encompasses the development and utilization of knowledge and skills within the tourism. These skills encompass problem-solving for various stakeholders, including managers, employees, tourists, and residents. Furthermore, they involve a deeper understanding of tourist destinations and active contributions to sustainable tourism promotion. Surprisingly, despite the extensive literature on literacy studies in fields like economics, media, maps, and water, there remains a conspicuous gap in tourism literacy research. Consequently, the novelty of this subject has spurred researchers to address this void. Accordingly, the main aim of this study is to develop a scale that can measure individuals’ tourism literacy, which will be the first of its kind. To achieve this, firstly a question pool was created. Then the scale was developed with expert opinions and pilot testing. CFA and EFA were performed for determining the final version of the scale. At the end of the study, a scale consisting of six dimensions (residents’ knowledge and skills related to tourism, tourists’ knowledge and skills, tourist guidance knowledge and skills, food and beverage management knowledge and skills, tourism management knowledge, and tourism management skills) was established, and its validity and reliability were confirmed. Future research suggestions and study limitations have been mentioned.

The impact of economic growth, tourism, natural resources, technological innovation on carbon dioxide emission: evidence from BRICS countries.

The main objective of this manuscript was to investigate the relationships among economic development, tourism, the use of natural resources, technical advancement, and carbon dioxide emissions in the BRICS group of nations. Data from the panel was gathered from 1995 to 2018. Modern methodology tools including the CS-ARDL tests, Westerlund cointegration tests, and panel data unit root tests have been used in this study. Results of the models show that all the variables were transformed to the first difference to make it stationary. The Westerlund model test results suggest that dependent and independent variables have robust cointegration. Results of the CS-ARDL models reveal that all the variables signed, and significance are aligned with the economic theory. It indicates that except for tourism, the rest of the variables like technical innovation, natural resources, and economic growth have positive and significant effects on carbon dioxide emissions both in the short and long runs. Additionally, a 1% rise in economic growth, technical innovation, and natural resources over the long term would raise carbon dioxide emissions in the BRICS economies by 1.79%, 0.15%, and 0.10%, respectively. However, a 1% increase in tourism would result in a 0.39% decrease in carbon dioxide emissions among the nations in the panel data set. Therefore, the promotion of sustainable tourism and advancement in technological innovation is highly important in these countries, so the high impact of environmental degradation pressure may reduce to some extent. An in-addition comprehensive set of policies should be made on encouraging low-carbon transportation, promoting sustainable tourism certification, boosting local produce, reducing waste management, and provide education and awareness campaigns to tourists.

Stakeholder Participation in Planning of a Sustainable and Competitive Tourism Destination: The Genoa Integrated Action Plan

The outbreak of COVID-19 confronted the international community with critical health, social, and economic challenges. Travel and tourism were among the hardest affected sectors. In 2020 and 2021 new travel trends emerged, emphasizing local destinations, short distances, and consequently, lower-carbon transportation (proximity tourism). Post-pandemic recovery represents an opportunity to bounce back better by rethinking the sector’s economic model for the sake of sustainability and innovation. This paper disseminates the research that led to the structuring of guidelines for a breakthrough and inclusive municipal-level action plan for the promotion of sustainable tourism, as part of the Tourism Friendly Cities project. An operational methodology is discussed here, whereby key stakeholder participation, conceptualized through a sextuple helix model, is the foundation of the planning process. A small-scale action and a qualitative assessment tool of the participatory process are also illustrated. The proposed methodology corroborates the vast positive effects deriving from stakeholder participation in terms of trust, ownership, planning quality, innovativeness and sustainability of interventions. In applying the methodology, although the digital framework was evaluated positively in terms of the number of participants that could be involved, data collection, and confidentiality of activities, the evaluation shows that hybrid modes of participation are more desirable.

How to teach sustainable tourism development: The ICT4STD project

Sustainable tourism development and digital transformations are among the key issues that should be taken into account when preparing contemporary tourism degree programmes. In order to offer an innovative curriculum, systems thinking and knowledge from the intersection of many areas including tourism, geography, information and communication technology, management, teaching methodology and psychology are required. The adaptation of curricula should also take into account the experience of universities outside Poland which have often successfully implemented programmes covering sustainable development issues for many years and have feedback on the satisfaction of both graduates and employers. This article presents the results of the work of an international consortium of universities from Germany, Poland, Serbia and Switzerland which developed a course programme on ‘ICT as a tool for the development and promotion of sustainable tourism’ that can be adapted by a wide range of organisations such as universities, NGOs and tourism training companies.

Online booking platforms: Towards making more sustainable choices

Tourism has become an important contributor to many sustainability issues. In addition, online booking platforms have grown to become an increasingly used means of booking accommodation, which can be crucial for encouraging sustainability. Furthermore, the promotion of sustainable tourism (ST) and accommodation services at an international level has become essential. Although the number of sustainability-certified accommodation solutions has been increasing, limited attempts have been made to promote ST using online booking platforms. This study aims to identify whether the concept of sustainability has been integrated into online booking platforms. For the objective to be met, a representative sample of platforms were identified and then analysed both in terms of their content and by testing them. The results highlight that this concept has not been adequately integrated into such platforms and that the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the priority from sustainability to health and safety issues. The Role of Villagers' Social Innovations in Advocacy Village Tourism Through Involvement of Study Activities in Village Tourism

This study aims to determine the positive relationship between social innovation, involvement, and advocacy tourism in the villagers Community. Active support from the village community can be very important for successful tourism development if villagers become more aware of the attractive characteristics of the area and are involved in developing sustainable tourism promotion in Village. In this study, a hypothesis test of the relationship between social innovation and advocacy tourism through community involvement will be conducted. To get a comprehensive picture, the researcher will collect a research sample of 100 villagers who have the criteria for the age of 18 to 50 years and are familiar with social media. Respondents will fill out a questionnaire and answers from respondents will be analyzed using path analysis to test hypotheses.

Can Blockchain technology help small islands achieve sustainable tourism? A perspective on North Cyprus

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to explore the presence and use of Blockchain technologies (BCTs) in the North Cyprus hotel and tourism sectors by eliciting stakeholder perspectives on BCT's role in sustainable tourism development and the current state of its application in North Cyprus.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative methodology was used and primary data gathered via telephone interviews with sixteen managers of casino hotels. The researchers also used an observation technique for data collection in order to better analyse the existing case situation.FindingsAlthough the findings show similarities in the stakeholders' awareness of cryptocurrencies, they lack overall knowledge of BCTs. The responses of participants indicate a lack of knowledge regarding the use of BCTs, particularly the areas in which they can be used. North Cyprus' tourism and hotel sectors are significantly behind the curve in terms of adopting innovative technologies, due to traditional operational concerns and to the limited scope of policy development.Research limitations/implicationsPolicymakers should consider the practical implications for both the sector's and the country's resources in order to maximize environmental and financial gains.Practical implicationsThe promotion of sustainable tourism can be facilitated by the wider adoption of BCTs as it could enable operators to manage their network relationships and business operations in a more socially and environmentally responsible manner.Originality/valueNo prior studies were found that evaluate the presence of BCTs in support of tourism development in North Cyprus. This study will assist practitioners in comprehending the practical implications and will enable policymakers to develop sector-specific policies.

Tourists’ perceptions and consumer surplus at a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Okavango Delta, Botswana: Implications for rural development

ABSTRACT The capturing of full benefits associated with nature-based tourism could be one of the strategies for the promotion of sustainable tourism in the Okavango Delta (OD). The general objective of this paper is to establish the perceptions of tourists in relation to consumer surplus (CS) of tourist visitation to the OD and implications on rural development. The study shows that there is substantial CS of tourist visitation in the OD. A significant proportion of tourists (53%) said that they were willing to contribute to a fund for the compensation of farmers for their loss of property resulting from their conflict with wildlife. Most tourists (90%) thought tourism should contribute to the development of local communities. They suggested that the captured CS could be used for rural development and wildlife conservation. The study recommends that the CS could be captured in the OD as entry and conservation fees.

Fly fishing no-kill zones: a possible way to conjugate conservation issues, sustainable sport enhancement and local development in Alpine areas?

The promotion of sustainable tourism and outdoor sports can represent an important way to couple environmental conservation strategies and economic enhancement in marginal and Alpine areas. In this context catch and release fly fishing zones can represent an interesting tool, although no data is available on the effectiveness of these practices on Alpine salmonid population dynamics. Salmonids are the main group of fish in alpine rivers and they are the only actively targeted by anglers. Aim of this work is filling this gap, with a pilot study on two no-kill zones (Po and Pellice rivers, NW Italy). We conducted a temporal and spatial comparison between free-fishing and catch and release management river sections, with a detailed analysis on the Po River site. Our results support the hypothesis that catch and release management allows a numerical increase in wild trout populations. In particular, we detected a massive and rapid increase in younger individuals, possibly linked to a stop on the removal of large-sized reproducers. Protecting trout by the implementation of this practice can at the same time allow the increase of sustainable economic development and sport in marginal areas.

Interpretando a biodiversidade: a avifauna do Parque Nacional dos Campos Gerais (Paraná, Brasil)

Environmental interpretation is a tool that helps in understanding the landscape and its elements, frequently used in protected areas (PA) to sensitize visitors. In order to improve environmental interpretation and promote bird watching in the Campos Gerais National Park, this paper aims to discuss the importance of interpretative means to achieve the objectives of the PA, presenting a proposal for a panel and a folder of the present avifauna. For this, besides the bibliographical research and experts consulting, we carried out field visits. It is concluded that the proposed tools could improve the interpretation/identification, as well as in the promotion of sustainable tourism potentially in the conservation of birdlife.

Sustainable Tourism and The Roles of Tour Guides in Destinations: A Qualitative Case Study in Turkey

The sustainable tourism approach is the way to ensure a destination’s development and protec-tion. Since there are important links between the visitor and the destination, tourist guides may contribute to the destination’s resources management and economic and socio-cultural impact. They could set a deep contact with tourists in destinations and have positive results on tourist sustainable behaviors. The aim of the study is to identify the dimensions of the roles attributed to tourist guides in the promotion of sustainable tourism and to determine the content of these roles within an exploratory perspective. In this research, the qualitative research method has been adopted in the phenomenology research design in order to reveal the meanings that tour guides have experienced. The data was obtained through deep-interviews with tourist guides and evalu-ated with descriptive analysis technique. According to the findings, the roles of the tourist guides are dimensioned as “adopting consulting role, taking over inspection, sustainability training, raising tourists’ awareness, promotion of the local economy, and sustainable tour management” within the context of sustainable tourism development. The paper indicates the contributions to the tourism literature with the determination of roles tourist guides serve in the promotion of sus-tainable tourism in detail, as limited studies have been conducted in Turkey.

Affective subjectivation or moral ambivalence? Constraints on the promotion of sustainable tourism by academic researchers

This paper examines an increasingly pervasive aspect of neoliberal research funding regimes, namely the expectation that academic research should influence non-academic policy and practice. More specifically, it explores the reaction of British academic researchers with an interest in sustainable tourism to what has become known as the impact agenda. How do they conceptualise impact? Do they moralise impact (perhaps in relation to the limits of their expertise or the veracity of their claims)? Does this aspect of research policy affect their approach to academic work? The findings of a qualitative study reveal a constituency of academic researchers primarily concerned with their own performativity. There is seemingly limited moral framing of research impact and a suggestion of moral hypocrisy. Widespread affective subjectivation provides a plausible explanation for current academic behaviour. The paper concludes by arguing that without a collective re-thinking of how sustainable tourism research might gain influence beyond academia, it is probable that performative practices will continue to characterise academic responses to the impact agenda.

Residents’ Attitudes toward Support for Island Sustainable Tourism

This study examined the relationships between the factors that influence residents’ attitudes toward supporting for sustainable tourism in an island context. A quantification approach was employed to obtain the residents’ perspectives. This study collected 384 valid questionnaires from the residents and analyzed the collected data using structural equation modeling to test the model. The findings revealed that the Maximizing Community Participation dimension demonstrated a positive direct effect on residents’ support for sustainable tourism, and this dimension explained most of the variance in the model. The Perceived Economic Benefits dimension exhibited a positive direct effect on the residents’ support for sustainable tourism. Perceived Economic Benefits mediated the effect of Environmental Sustainability on support for sustainable tourism. The findings provide practical implications for policy makers on the promotion of sustainable tourism.

Sustainability of Tourism in India: Perception of Tourists on Delhi Tourism

This research attempts to examine the impact of tourism on economy, environment, and socio-cultural aspects of Delhi and explores how Delhi incorporated sustainable tourism development as the core mission to achieve economic, environmental, and socio-cultural development of tourist destinations. The main objective of this research is to examine the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural sustainability of tourism development in Delhi. A primary research was conducted at various tourist destinations in Delhi for evaluating the sustainability of tourism through the questionnaire survey. Questionnaire survey was executed among the tourists. A data set consisting of 141 respondents were generated. Descriptive statistics and factor analysis have been performed for evaluating the perception of tourists on the tourism policy and governance, economic, socio-cultural, and environmental sustainability. Research findings establish that the resource management, pressure on resources, local empowerment, environmental management, socio-cultural unsustainability, tourism governance, destination management, sustainable tourism promotion, local community participation are the important factors, which affects the sustainability of tourist destinations in Delhi. This research paper provides comprehensive and scientific evidences about the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural impacts of tourism development in Delhi, research findings can guide the government agencies, tourism operators, hotels and restaurants, and NGOs while formulating and implementing tourism policies.
