Comprehensive assessment of the water environment carrying capacity based on machine learning

Human activities and climate change are constantly threatening water environment systems. To alleviate pressure on the water environment and meet the requirements for sustainable societal development, it has become important to study the water environment carrying capacity (WECC). As science and technology have advanced, the use of artificial intelligence has penetrated various disciplines, and the application of machine learning has achieved many good results in the environmental sciences; however, little attention has been given to the WECC. To this end, a WECC assessment model was developed based on a variety of machine learning algorithms, to provide a novel approach and better understanding of the WECC. In this study, 13 natural and anthropogenic factors related to the water environment system in Liaoning Province (China) were selected, and the study period ranged from 2015 to 2019. Four basic machine learning algorithms, namely, random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), multilayer perceptron (MLP) and k-nearest neighbour (KNN), were used for batch modelling, and stacking was carried out based on the output results. A comparison and screening of the models revealed that RF and the stacking model had the best model prediction performances. Because RF was relatively simple and convenient, a comprehensive assessment of the regional WECC based on this algorithm was carried out. The results showed that most of the control units with an overloaded WECC are located in the central and northern regions of Liaoning Province, and the control units of overloading can be well identified and the trend of regional WECC status can be observed. To improve model transparency, we also performed an explanatory analysis based on the shapley additive explanations (SHAP). The results showed that precipitation, soil texture, sewage treatment plant, wind speed, and temperature were the most important factors influencing the water environment system. Precipitation is the most influential factor, and with increasing rainfall, the WECC first improves and then gradually deteriorates. For the anthropogenic factors, the WECC generally improves first and then worsens as these factors increase. These research results can be used to provide a powerful and practical new methodology for the comprehensive assessment of the WECC and provide a basis for the development of water environment policies and regulatory implementation in the region.

Логіка трансформації розподільчих відносин при переході від індустріально-ринкової до інформаційно-мережевої економіки

The article elucidates the logic of the transformation of distribution relations in the transition from an industrial market to an information and network economy. It is demonstrated that information becomes the primary product and resource of production, which can be accessed by everyone. This transformation establishes new property relations and alters the relationship between production and consumption, where a single product can be sold multiple times in the market, thereby contributing to the increase in income inequality and the appearance of new patterns in distribution relations. This dynamic impacts the economic structure of society, wealth distribution, and resource accessibility, significantly influencing the socio-economic development of the country. Attention is drawn to the contradictory impact of new technologies on the mechanism of distributional relations. On one hand, they can enhance productivity, but on the other hand, they may exacerbate inequality as certain segments of the population may remain excluded from the opportunities afforded by new technologies. Therefore, it is crucial to consider not only the benefits but also the risks associated with the adoption of new technologies to ensure a fair and sustainable societal development.

Assessing the spatiotemporal impacts of land use change on ecological environmental quality using a regionalized territorial impact assessment framework

Integrating ecosystem services into development assessments is crucial for sustainable urban and societal development. This requires a detailed examination of how land use change affects the spatial and temporal dynamics of ecological environmental quality (EEQ), considering regional variations. This study investigates the intricate relationship between land use change and EEQ by referring to the Territorial Impact Assessment (TIA) framework and introducing a novel concept of regional sensitivity. Focusing on Guangdong Province, China, from 2000 to 2020, the study analyzes the spatiotemporal evolution of EEQ at the county level in response to land use change. The findings show an initial decline in EEQ followed by a recovery, with an overall slight upward trend, evident in the Pearl River Delta and northern regions. The study also identifies areas encompassing nearly half the province's total area that experienced EEQ degradation during the study period. By applying the TIA framework with regional sensitivity indicators, this research not only contributes to improved EEQ change assessment methodologies but also informs the development of more regionally-specific sustainable land use and urban development policies. Ultimately, this study provides scientific support for navigating the challenges of achieving sustainable urban development in the face of evolving environmental conditions.

Towards sustainable development: Assessing social sustainability of Australian aged care system

AbstractThe importance of social sustainability, one of the three pillars of sustainable development, is increasingly recognised. Its implementation in the aged care system enhances stakeholders' quality of life and supports sustainable societal development. However, there is limited global research on social sustainability in aged care. This study aims to assess the overall social sustainability of the Australian aged care system and propose measures for its improvement. A conceptual framework was developed and applied to analyse the Final Report: Care, Dignity and Respect by the Australian Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. The findings reveal that Australia's aged care system demonstrates significant deficiencies in social sustainability, with unequal access to care, services and facilities, and inadequate health and comfort for the elderly and their families. Employees contend with issues of unfair employment, insufficient compensation, unhealthy work environments, and inadequate education and training. Several measures are proposed to enhance social sustainability. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of social sustainability in the aged care system within a Western context. It enhances our understanding of the components of social sustainability in aged care, assesses its current status, identifies existing challenges, and provides possible directions for improvement. The insights from Australia's experience and potential solutions could inspire other countries to recognise the importance of social sustainability and reform their aged care systems towards sustainable development.

Application of microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) process in concrete self-healing and environmental restoration to facilitate carbon neutrality: a critical review.

Soil contamination, land desertification and concrete cracking can have significant adverse impacts on sustainable human economic and societal development. Cost-effective and environmentally friendly approaches are recommended to resolve these issues. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an innovative, attractive and cost-effective in situ biotechnology with high potential for remediation of polluted or desertified soils/lands and cracked concrete and has attracted widespread attention in recent years. Accordingly, the principles of MICP technology and its applications in the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated and desertified soils and self-healing of concrete were reviewed in this study. The production of carbonate mineral precipitates during the MICP process can effectively reduce the mobility of heavy metals in soils, improve the cohesion of dispersed sands and realize self-healing of cracks in concrete. Moreover, CO2 can be fixed during MICP, which can facilitate carbon neutrality and contribute to global warming mitigation. Overall, MICP technology exhibits great promise in environmental restoration and construction engineering applications, despite some challenges remaining in its large-scale implementation, such as the substantial impacts of fluctuating environmental factors on microbial activity and MICP efficacy. Several methods, such as the use of natural materials or wastes as nutrient and calcium sources and isolation of bacterial strains with strong resistance to harsh environmental conditions, are employed to improve the remediation performance of MICP. However, more studies on the efficiency enhancement, mechanism exploration and field-scale applications of MICP are needed.

Rehabilitation Service in the Hospitality Industry

Topicality. The hospitality industry development in Ukraine takes place in crisis conditions of the post-pandemic environment and escalating military threats. In the context of the mentioned above, accommodation facilities reformate business concepts and customer-oriented approaches, supplementing them with certain security compliance, and the creation of relevant wartime rehabilitation services. Psycho-emotional exhaustion, physical injuries, hidden and definite stressors cause a necessity in forming rehabilitative hospitality. The rehabilitation services need for war victims and military personnel is acutely actualised, taking into account global tendencies: ensuring inclusive and barrier-free services; growing requirements for sustainable and environmental responsibility in the hotel business; increasing demands for health and medical services. Thus, rehabilitation hospitality can become an efficient means of ensuring equal conditions of access to hotel services for all population groups, as well as promoting social inclusion and tourism development (including medical and sanative ones), which means improvement of the economy and well-being of society in total. The aim of the article is to ground approaches to the development of rehabilitation hospitality as a concept for promoting human mental health and societal inclusion. The focus of the research methodology is the hypothesis that the rehabilitation service integration into the hospitality sphere can help in increasing the competitiveness of business entities, attract the target audience to the newly created ground, and ensure the sustainable development of society. Research methods. Presented for review research topic acquires the use of certain general economic methods of studying literary sources and scientific publications; statistical methods in the study of tendencies; empirical studies. This contributed to elaborating theoretical approaches and tools of scientific study, as well as logical interpreting the prospects for the rehabilitation hospitality development in Ukraine. Results. The definition of “rehabilitation hospitality” is offered for use in the scientific operational field; its objectives, systemic components and functions in sustainable societal development are defined. The types of hospitality establishments that integrate rehabilitation services into the system of additional services are characterised. Preconditions for the rehabilitation services development in the hospitality subjects’ activity are evaluated. Based on empirical research results, the state of the development of the rehabilitation services system in Ukraine is determined. The checklist on forming the system of marketing management rehabilitation services is elaborated. The directions for developing rehabilitation hospitality are offered, basing on digital tools and partnership programmes in the rehabilitation sphere. Prospects for further research include finding and implementing innovative approaches and technologies in the rehabilitation hospitality sphere in order to enhance its effectiveness and service quality. Conclusions and discussion. The conducted study demonstrates the relevance of rehabilitation hospitality as a factor in restoring human potential in sustainable state’s development, as it allows to research and scientifically ground directions for health restoration, and integration into society for those ones who suffered because of war, military personnel; to create barrier-free and inclusive environment in the hospitality industry, which ensures increasing accessibility and admission to services for people with disabilities and special needs, their social integration and improving the quality of life. In addition, this contributes to expanding the customer audience, and improving the reputation and competitiveness of hospitality establishments, as well as increasing their income. The sources of information and empirical research results used in this study confirm the offered hypothesis, the formulated conclusions and research perspectives, also creating a discussion platform for the study of rehabilitation hospitality, and its qualitative integration into the system of the state’s rehabilitation services.

The presented article explores the integration of digital education into the concept of sustainable societal development and education relation to the formation of the "information society" and "knowledge society" processes. The term "knowledge society" is defined, emphasizing its relevance in the 2020s context. The article demonstrates that the spread of digital education is a manifestation of the "digital turn," driven by the transformation of information into a primary resource that sustains societal activities. The temporal boundaries of this phenomenon are also outlined, emphasizing that the "digital turn" represents both a quantitative and qualitative expression of the ongoing development of technologies. The main challenges associated with implementing the "digital turn" are identified, impacting the effectiveness of achieving sustainable development goals – a dynamic state of society, characterized by the rational use of resources. The significance of education in ensuring such rationality is elaborated upon. The pivotal moment marking revolutionary changes in the dissemination of digital education is identified as the onset of global quarantine measures in 2019. Digital technologies increases the speed and volume of information exchange. Simultaneously, educational information, as one of the most crucial forms, requires heightened attention in terms of quality and accessibility. The article identifies the main positive and negative manifestations of the "digital turn," critical for the construction of a "knowledge society" and the achievement of "sustainable development" goals. It is demonstrated that the attainment of the "knowledge society" and "sustainable development" states share common conditions associated with the development of digital technologies. Digital education, in particular, plays a crucial role as a condition for building a safe and predictable environment for the evolving of contemporary individual. Alongside global trends in digital education, specific features within the educational environment of Ukraine are addressed.

Research on the Correlation between Economic Factors and Quality of Life

This study is a pivotal examination of the intricate link between economic factors and residents' quality of life, underscoring its critical implications for policy-making and societal advancement. It delves into the multifaceted relationship between economic indicators like GDP, unemployment, income distribution, and quality of life elements such as health, education, and subjective well-being, particularly focusing on Qingdao, China from 2008 to 2018. Employing a hybrid methodology of quantitative and qualitative analysis, including secondary data and case studies, the research unveils a positive correlation between economic growth and improved living standards, while also highlighting the complexities and multidimensional aspects of this relationship. The findings suggest that while economic growth contributes to better quality of life, aspects like job creation, social equity, and public services are equally vital, advocating a balanced approach in policy-making to ensure equitable and sustainable societal development.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PUBLIC INFORMATION OPENNESS AND ICT DEVELOPMENT

The relationship between Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development and the level of Public Information Openness (KIP) holds significant implications for inclusive and sustainable societal development. This study employs statistical analysis, including Pearson correlation, to examine this relationship across Indonesian provinces in 2022. Findings indicate a positive correlation between ICT development and KIP. Access to ICT infrastructure and ICT usage show significant correlations with IKIP levels across various provinces. Provinces with better ICT development generally exhibit higher KIP levels. However, the relationship with ICT skills is comparatively weaker, indicating other influencing factors on ICT literacy within the community. The conclusion drawn from this research is that ICT development positively contributes to enhancing Public Information Transparency in Indonesia. Therefore, further efforts are needed to support equitable ICT development, enhance digital literacy, and strengthen public information transparency, enabling the population to effectively harness information and communication technology

Sustainable construction and quality of improved columns with three types of water-cement ratios on deep mixing method in Saga Lowland, Kyushu, Japan

In this study, we investigated the application of the deep mixing method (DMM) to cohesive soil in the Saga Lowland of Kyushu, Japan. The study focused on examining three types of water-cement ratio (W/C) conditions, with a constant addition of cement-based binder (C). Due to the soft clay nature of the Saga Lowland, frequent ground settlement and deformation occur, necessitating measures to prevent adverse effects on the surrounding environment. The objective of this research is to provide a valuable approach to optimizing the quality of the improved columns while minimizing ground displacement in an environmentally considerate manner. In Saga Lowland, it is common to fix the W/C ratio at 1.0 and vary the cement content. Through experimental construction for improved columns on the field, the study confirmed that W/C values of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 influence the quality of the improved structure. A higher W/C value of 1.5 resulted in a more fluid cement slurry due to a higher injection rate (IR = 23.9%), as evidenced by statistical analysis revealing higher average unconfined compressive strength ( qu¯\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\overline{{q }_{u}}$$\\end{document}), and a lower coefficient of variation (CV). The defective rate of 10% (qudr) from the design standard strength shows that values are lowest for Case 2, followed by Case 3 and then Case 1. Comparing the values of Case 2 and Case 3, it is observed that in Case 3, with a higher W/C, the CV is lower.. Regarding horizontal ground displacement (Sh), Case 3 exhibited a Sh value of 2.0 to 6.5 mm, significantly lower than Saga prefecture standards (20 mm). This outcome is attributed to reduced viscosity during mixing, leading to improved fluidity and minimal lateral displacement of the soil–cement columns (which often results in lateral ground uplift). Even though with a higher W/C = 1.5, the implementation cost remains the same, but the constructed structure would be of higher quality and smaller displacement, with the overall structure corresponding to the standard quality. The study includes the specific geotechnical conditions of the Saga Lowland and the scope of experimentation. Nonetheless, in terms of the applicability and optimization of DMM in Saga Lowland, the findings provide practical guidance for engineers in selecting W/C ratio and IR during construction for future DMM implementations, thereby contributing to the development of long-lasting infrastructure and sustainable societal development.

In the face of the escalating global phenomenon of population aging, this comprehensive study seeks to explore the intricate and far-reaching consequences of aging on the global economy. The research background accentuates the profound reshaping of familial, societal, and national structures induced by this pervasive trend, giving rise to extensive economic apprehensions. Delving into critical domains such as the labor market, consumption patterns, and the social security system, the present paper systematically unravels the manifold opportunities and challenges arising from the aging population, drawing insights from an exhaustive review of both domestic and international literature and empirical cases. Employing a methodology encompassing literature reviews and in-depth case analyses, the study capitalizes on diverse global experiences to formulate adaptable and responsive strategies. The conclusive findings underscore the pressing need for the expeditious implementation of flexible policies and the fortification of social support structures. This study serves as a fount of profound insights for policymakers, offering a roadmap towards fostering sustainable societal development amidst the prevailing wave of population aging.

Self-Development as a Vector of Sustainable Development of Society: The Perspective of Ukrainian Students

The discrepancy between one's own personality and the desired self-image causes dissonance. But one can always change everything if one cares not only about one's own “EGO”, but also about the values of a sustainable future. Self-actualization, self-development, self-determination - these are potential determinants of human existence as such. The ideological identity combines the memory of the past, the value realities of the present life, and outlines the vector of respect for the life of future generations, which in turn actualizes the conceptual paradigm of the concept of sustainable development a priori. The implementation of the social component of sustainable societal development involves maintaining and enriching the mental health and psychological well-being of citizens. A powerful internal resource for this is self-development, which is a vector of self-realization, unlocking potential and increasing the resilience of the individual. The aim of the empirical study was to examine the attitudes and activity of future psychologists regarding self-development as a vector for realizing the ideas of the concept of sustainable societal development. Materials and methods: The study involved 156 Ukrainian students studying psychology. Methods of written surveys, statistical processing and qualitative analysis of diagnostic data, ranking were used. Results: It was found that self-development is an important factor in the professional development success of future psychologists, an effective motive for their learning and a significant professional priority. Most respondents clearly understand the connection between their own self-development and the sustainable development of Ukrainian society.

Main peculiarities in the process of integration and social inclusion of refugees and/or forcibly displaced persons of various quintiles

The process of integration and social inclusion of representatives of various socio-economical quintiles has always been a controversial issue. Since the moment of massive influx of representatives of the “rich quintile” in the last decade, scientists alongside with the local community were tended to think that the financial prosperity and unordinary assets, properties, skills and knowledge, which make more difficult the process of a proper “distinguishing” refugees and/or forcibly displaced persons (it means, make them unrecognized as ones, who are in need of actual help) lead to disruption of supportive relationships between newcomers and accepting community. However, the practice of cooperation between people seeking for a refugee from one side and accepting community of global society, in particular, EU one from another one, shows that people coming from less favorable backgrounds and possessing less favorable starting points can also be discriminated and underestimated on their way to the wellbeing in a receiving community. In the following article we are presenting tools and methods of obtaining a necessary level of long lasting appropriate and sustainable societal development by enabling a proper level of integration and social inclusion of all quintiles of refugees/forcibly displaced persons by recognizing their current and/or future potential.

Sustainable Energy Consumption Insights: Understanding Electricity-saving Behaviour Drivers among Young Adults in Ho Chi Minh City

As Vietnam’s population continues to grow, there is a growing need for sustainable societal development. The energy-saving behaviour of every citizen plays a crucial role in achieving this sustainability. Therefore, it is necessary to raise awareness among young adults about energy conservation and environmental protection to promote sustainable social development in Vietnam. Hence, this study aims to examine the key factors influencing electricity-saving and habitual energy-saving behaviour. Data were collected from 431 young adults aged 18 to 30 years old in Ho Chi Minh City. The results indicate the significance of the model studied, with all hypotheses being accepted. The findings demonstrate that several factors, including subjective standards, perceived behavioural control, awareness of consequences, sense of responsibility, personal moral norms and cognition of electricity prices, influence electricity-saving behaviours and habitual energy-saving behaviour related to electricity usage. The findings suggest that young adults are increasingly recognising the importance of conserving electricity in modern life to protect the environment and promote sustainable social development in Vietnam. The management implication suggests that individuals in Ho Chi Minh City have demonstrated an awareness of energy conservation. However, responsible authorities should initiate programmes aimed at promoting electricity-saving practices. This includes the creation of media articles to raise awareness and enhance the understanding of electricity-saving measures, serving as reminders to increase awareness about conserving electricity among every individual. Furthermore, this study offers theoretical and practical implications for researchers and policymakers alike.

Ecology and safety in the field of national economy

This article addresses the important issue of the interrelation between ecology and safety in the national economy. The authors analyze the influence of environmental factors on production processes and the livelihoods of the population, as well as examine measures to ensure environmental safety in various economic sectors. This article serves as valuable research for specialists in the fields of ecology, economics, and management, as well as for anyone interested in the issues of environmental safety at the national economy level. The work thoroughly analyzes the impact of environmental factors on production processes, economic activity, and the social sphere. It also discusses the importance of ensuring environmental safety for sustainable societal development and the preparation of relevant personnel. Domestic education has recently faced a shortage of personnel in the management system and has organized training based on colleges and universities; however, this approach has not yielded the desired effect. The paper presents scientific approaches to this problem (N.A. Zarubova, D.A. Pastukhova, T.N. Melnikova, V.K. Vittenbek, M.E. Kiryagina, and others) and addresses approaches to personnel training. Special attention is paid to issues of corporate and state social responsibility in environmental protection, as well as the interaction of various stakeholders in the process of forming an environmentally friendly national economy.

The correlation between demographic processes and demoethical values of sustainable societal development in the context of climate and energy migration and water scarcity

Object: To study the interrelation of demographic processes in the context of the most pressing global issues related to water resources, climate, energy migration, and demoethical values as a tool for the transformation of sustainable development in society.Methods: The study utilizes the concept of Demoethics, which is based on the priority of spirituality as the basis for a new stage or model of sustainable development in society, which involves integrating the demographic, socioeconomic, and ecological components into the overall processes of modeling.Findings: The proposed approach focuses on organizing activities to improve sustainable development. In particular, a demographic model is presented, which is important for the Society 5.0 and Industry 5.0 organizations. Through literature review and analysis, this research identifies key issues in the sustainable development of the demographic component of the economy based on the demoethical model and provides practical recommendations for stakeholders involved in digital transformation.Conclusions: In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for countries, civil society, and international institutions by 2030, commitments have been made to accomplish a range of tasks, from reducing extreme poverty to ensuring environmental sustainability and universal education, reducing child mortality, and promoting gender equality. Despite the fact that adaptation activities directly contribute to achieving SDG 13, which focuses on taking action against climate change, it should be seen as part of a strategy to strengthen a country's achievements in implementing all other SDGs based on the value of Demoethics.Expected results: The results of this study can serve as a basis for supporting targeted policies and the transformation of demographic components of the economy.

Visible-Light-Responsive Photoreversible Multi-Color Switching for Rewritable Light-Printing and Information Display.

Photoreversible color switching systems (PCSSs) exhibiting multi-color responses to visible light are favored for sustainable societal development over those relying on ultraviolet light due to safer operation and better penetration depth. Here, a PCSS capable of multi-color switching responsive to visible light based on highly photoreductive rutile-phase Sn-doped TiO2-x nanoparticles is reported. The Sn-doping significantly red-shifts the absorption band of the nanoparticles to the visible region, improving charge separation and transfer efficiencies and introducing Ti3+ species and oxygen vacancies as internal sacrificial electron donors for scavenging photogenerated holes. The resulting Sn-doped TiO2-x nanoparticles feature exceptional photoreduction ability and activity, thereby enabling photoreversible color switching of various redox dyes operational under visible light illumination. Furthermore, multi-color switching can be achieved via the color overlay effect by combining different redox dyes in one system, opening the door to many advanced applications, as demonstrated in their successful uses for developing visible-light-driven rewritable multi-color light-printing systems and visual information displays.

Usage of AI in Sustainable Knowledge Management and Innovation Processes; Data Analytics in the Electricity Sector

Successful organisations prioritise product quality and customer satisfaction. Non-financial indicators are crucial for measuring performance, requiring specific financial and technology management knowledge. Effective knowledge management and entrepreneurial activity significantly impact performance, vital to the country’s economic factors. Electricity is crucial to society’s development. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass can generate sustainable electricity. Managing environmental, social, and economic aspects is essential for sustainable societal and virtual development. In this study, the central element of novelty is associated with the dependent variable Nominal Labour Productivity per Employee. This research shows that effective knowledge management impacts a company’s business performance. Based on secondary data from various sources, we have used factor analysis to assess the interrelationship between the factors and econometric dimensionalities. Accompanied by this econometric approach, the research methodology aims to present hybrid models based on econometric techniques and artificial intelligence (AI) networks. Based on the principal component method analysis results, we show the interdependence of 30 variables in the micro and macro environment. The new components of the correlated variables show how knowledge and innovation are related to the economic performance of society, and nominal employee productivity is a valuable indicator for measuring economic efficiency. Nevertheless, AI, a knowledge management product, provides helpful comments on the econometric results.

In today’s society, crime, corruption and other adverse social phenomena have a major impact on the sustainable development of society by reducing investment in the development and implementation of full-fledged growth programmes. During the crisis and post-crisis period, social pathologies are growing and their adverse effects are increasing too. The true indicators of their prevalence and negative impact are objectively sufficiently not known.
