Waste Reduction in Pipe Industry Through Lean Six Sigma Implementation

This research investigates to manage waste in longitudinal submerged arc welded (LSAW) steel pipes by the utilization of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tools, with an emphasis on promoting sustainability through waste reduction. The DMAIC approach was implemented to ascertain underlying causes, enact modifications, and oversee practices. Reusing, recycling, and repurposing of materials was employed to minimize production waste. The findings demonstrate a noteworthy decrease in waste with regards to the overall weight of raw material, from 5.3% to 3.4%, and a reduction in monetary losses by 58.07%. The implementation of the LSS methodology has been shown to augment customer satisfaction, minimize waste and variation, and improve sustainability in numerous industries. The effectiveness of the LSS approach in managing waste and promoting sustainability in the LSAW sector was validated by consistent results, as evidenced by the control plan. Given the crucial significance of efficient waste management for sustainable production and consumption, this research underscores the potential of LSS as a resilient methodological approach to reduce waste and advance sustainability in the industry.

The article is devoted to the study of sustainable production management of enterprises in modern conditions, given that it is a critical aspect of corporate social responsibility. The main publications and studies of scientists that characterize the main methods, strategies and tools are considered. The advantages and disadvantages of sustainable production management in the activities of an enterprise and its impact on the environment are analyzed. The author identifies the need to adopt environmentally friendly production methods, invest in renewable energy sources, reduce waste, and use environmentally friendly materials and technologies. Various strategies and tools that enterprises can use to achieve sustainable production management are proposed, focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of implementing these practices, to effectively and quickly achieve a high level of production and development of enterprises.

Optimization of the sustainable production pathways under multiple industries and objectives: A study of China's three energy- and emission-intensive industries

Sustainable production pathways are essential for the greening of the industrial sector. To develop the comprehensive optimal pathway, it is important to consider the interactions between multiple industries and objectives. While previous studies have combined several objectives in this field, the simultaneous optimization of multiple industries is still lacking. This study simulates the system of industrial sustainable production measures, including 184 measures in seven types, and proposes the optimization model in China's iron and steel, cement, and coal-fired power industry as cases. To solve this problem with large-scale variables and high-dimensional objectives, this study develops the solution approach including the objective decomposition mechanism and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm–II–elimination and choice expressing reality (NSGA–II–ELECTRE-III) algorithm, with final decision schemes selected by the Vague-set based approach. Results show that though the energy and emission objectives within an industry are synergic, but the relationships between different industries are almost irrelevant. By 2035, The three industries are estimated to reach energy conservations and emission reductions of 5.2–66.8% compared to 2017. The optimal solutions can exceed the air pollutant emission reduction targets but take risks of reaching energy conservation and CO2 emission reduction ones. The main contribution measures in the three industries are the integration of production equipment structure upgrade and cleaner production technology promotion, production output limitation, and production equipment structure upgrade, respectively, with 57 measures being prior for promotion. In sum, this study provides new solution methods and several policy suggestions for industrial sustainable production management.

Combination of pricing and inventory policies for deteriorating products with sustainability considerations.

Economic, environmental, and social criteria are all being taken into consideration simultaneously when determining pricing policies or inventory levels in sustainable production management. The combination of pricing and inventory policies is an important source of leverage for the efficient management of perishable products. This paper, among the first studies, proposes the problem of devising optimal pricing and inventory management decisions simultaneously where the environmental and social criteria are contributed for perishable complementary products replenished and sold by the same company. This study considers two interrelated price-sensitive linear demand functions to consider the possibility of shortage with both budget and warehouse capacity constraints. Another contribution of the proposed model is to consider an upper bound for environmental pollution and a lower bound for job opportunities as the constraints to the model. As a complex optimization model, the challenge of complexity is addressed by a heuristic algorithm for finding an optimal solution. After an extensive analysis using numerical examples, some managerial insights are concluded from the results. One finding from these analyses confirms that the total capacity of the warehouse, the total available budget, carbon emissions, and variable job opportunities have a high impact on the optimal solution to find a balance between sustainability criteria for making pricing and inventory policies.

Conservation Agriculture as a Potential Strategy to Increase Soil Quality in Colombian Agroecosystems

Conservation Agriculture (CA) has been promoted in many Latin American countries as an alternative to sustainable production management because of its ability to prevent soil degradation, enhance crop productivity, minimize climate change impact, and protect soil biodiversity. The main objective of this paper was to evaluate the effects of CA on Soil Quality (SQ) in five agroecosystems from Cachipay (Cundinamarca): Coffee Crop (CC) chronosequences of (1) 5 (CC5) and (2) 10 (CC10) years of establishment; Polyculture Cropping System (PCS) chronosequences of (3) 1 (PCS1) and (4) 6 (PCS6) years, and (5) Fallow (F) systems. A Minimum Data Set (MDS) was determined from principal component analysis. Aggregate stability index, aggregate stability, water holding capacity, geometric mean diameter, electric conductivity, heterotrophic bacterial density, and catalase were finally selected into the MDS and used in the calculation of the Soil Quality Index (SQI). CC5 (0.71), CC10 (0.67), PCS6 (0.66), and PCS1 (0.65) had a higher SQI in the study area than F (0.60). The study demonstrated the positive effect of CA practices based on minimum soil disturbance, lower inputs of agrochemicals, permanent soil organic cover with crop residues, and a diversified cropping system on SQ. The MDS-SQI approach represents a practical, promising, and adequate tool for monitoring SQ in agroecosystems.

Smart Sustainable Production Management for City Multifloor Manufacturing Clusters: An Energy-Efficient Approach to the Choice of Ceramic Filter Sintering Technology

The development of environmentally friendly technologies, including additive technologies, contributes to the formation of sustainable production in city multifloor manufacturing clusters (CMFMCs). This paper discusses an approach to the implementation of energy-intensive technological processes in such clusters using examples of the manufacturing of ceramic and metal–ceramic products. The manufacturing of ceramic and metal–ceramic products in high-temperature furnaces is associated with an increased electricity consumption. The use of modern ceramic micro- and nanopowders makes it possible to switch to more energy-saving technologies by reducing the sintering temperature and shortening the technological cycle. This requires the use of additional activating and inhibiting additives in the initial powder mixtures to obtain products with the necessary physical and mechanical properties. The purpose of this paper is to present a model and indicators to assess the energy efficiency of the choice of sintering technology of foam ceramic filters for smart sustainable production management within CMFMCs. The use of the proposed indicators for assessing the energy efficiency of sintering foam ceramic filters makes it possible to improve the technological process and reduce the completion time of its thermal cycle by 19%, and reduce the maximum heating temperature by 20% to 1350 °C. The adoption of a different oxide technological alternative and the use of the proposed model and indicators to assess the energy efficiency of the sintering technology of foam ceramic filters allows to choose less energy-intensive equipment and save up to 40% in electricity. The proposed model to assess the energy efficiency of the sintering technology of foam ceramic filters can be used to control their production under the power consumption limitations within the CMFMCs.

Application of digital technologies for sustainable product management in a circular economy: A review

AbstractDigital technologies (DTs), such as the Internet of Things, big data, artificial intelligence, or blockchain, are considered as enablers for a more sustainable and circular economy. So far, literature on these topics has mostly focused on specific DTs and subareas of sustainable product management (SPM). The aim of this paper is to provide a more comprehensive overview of current and potential examples of DT applications in SPM (e.g., product design/assessment, supply chain management, and business models). The collected examples (n = 146) were analyzed based on a systematic literature review, using quantitative and qualitative content analysis. Deductive and inductive analyses of the examples revealed the potential of DTs in terms of their usability along the product life cycle, their role as enablers for circular economy strategies and in specific SPM activities. DT application often entails only incremental improvements, for example, increased efficiency of existing processes, with more radical forms of improvement remaining relatively scarce. There is clear room for greater adoption and optimization of DTs, in various areas of SPM, so as to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable and circular economy.

Digital battery passports to enable circular and sustainable value chains: Conceptualization and use cases

With respect to sustainable product management, the transition to circular battery value chains requires that stakeholders have access to high-quality data for decision-making purposes. In such a context, digital battery passports (DBPs) can act as a valuable data source and thus enable greater sustainability and circularity. The present paper presents a DBP concept for an electric vehicle battery (EVB), and delineates, for the first time, the respective information requirements needed. Development of the DBP concept outlined here entailed stakeholder mapping, a systematic literature review, and a bottom-up approach. The concept comprises 54 data points, subsumed under four main information categories: (1) battery, (2) sustainability and circularity, (3) diagnostics, maintenance, and performance, and (4) value chain actors. The concept further details the information needed to enable sustainable and circular value chains. In addition, four potential DBP use cases of distinct EVB value chain stakeholders are presented in order to illustrate how the concept may be used to support sustainable product management. The contribution of the paper is threefold: firstly, it stimulates scientific debate concerning the potential of DBPs for sustainable product management. Secondly, the concepts described in this paper can be viewed as a guide for the development of other digital product passports and may thus serve to improve sustainable circular product management in general. Thirdly, it aids policymakers and practitioners when implementing DBPs.

Mapping Trends in Strategic Management for Sustainable Production

Introduction: The uncertainty derived from the availability of natural resources require transformations in strategic management to adopt sustainable production practices without affecting competitive advantage. Objective: This research aims to analyze the behavior and evolution of trends in publications on strategic management for the adoption of sustainable production practices. The Materials and methods: used was Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta- Analyses (PRISMA) and a bibliometric study for 442 publications retrieved from the Scopus database. Indicators of quantity (Pareto’s Law, Lotka’s Law and Solla Price Law), quality (Impact, h-index), and structure (Co-occurrence and cluster) were analyzed. The Results identified as research trends: environmental innovation; circular economy; Green Supply Chain Management; and bio-economic cost models. Conclusion: Finally, eight clusters emerged: (1) Management and models of sustainability to face climate change; (2) Natural resources conservation; (3) Methodologies, models and strategies of sustainable production; (4) Circular economy and waste management in sustainable production; (5) Energy sources management in productive processes; (6) Education and water management; (7) Risks and uncertainty management; and (8) Public policies for sustainable production.

Determining of The Onset Early Local Rainy and Dry seasons in Tea Plantation

Efforts to increase the productivity and quality of tea shoots are strongly influenced by local climatic and weather conditions at each plantation location. The existence of climate change globally causes climate change fluctuations and weather elements in almost all tea plantation locations in the world from year to year. Determination of the local climate at each tea plantation location is important in establishing a stable and sustainable production management program and the quality of tea shoots. The weather parameters used for the determination of the start of the local rainy season (AMH) and the start of the dry season (AMK) at the tea plantation location in Tritis hamlet are the amount of rainfall and basic rainy days determined by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). Rainfall data and local dasarian days of rain for a period of one year were analyzed using subjective descriptive methods involving graphical analysis and spatial analysis. The results showed that the beginning of the rainy season (AMH) in Tritis tea plantation was included in scenario 4 where AMH occurred in October 3 with the amount of rainfall ˃ 50 mm and the number of rainy days ˃ 6 days while the beginning of the dry season occurred in May 2 with the amount of rainfall ˂ 50 mm and the number of rainy days ˂ 6 days.Key words: AMH, AMK, Rainfall, Dasarian, Rainy Day, and Tea Plantation.

Balance rice yield and eating quality by changing the traditional nitrogen management for sustainable production in China

Total yield of rice in China has been greatly improved in recent decades. However, this yield improvement is excessively dependent on the input of nitrogen (N) fertilizer. In recent years, since the demand for rice quantity has basically been met, consumers pay more attention to rice quality, especially the eating quality. Increasing N application improves the yield of rice, but it changes the protein and amylose content in rice, generally reducing the eating quality. It is necessary to establish a more reasonable N management to balance yield and eating quality for rice sustainable development in China. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of various N managements on rice yield and eating quality by meta-analysis. Under traditional N management, increasing the amount of total N and late-stage N applications weaken the yield increase and decrease the eating quality with the significant increase in protein and amylose content in rice. By reducing total N and late-stage N application input, eating quality and N use efficiency could be significantly improved. Further, conditional inference tree analysis indicated that adjusting the amount of late-stage N application was a major measure to improve traditional N fertilization, since it could increase agronomic N use efficiency in rice production and balance yield maintenance and eating quality improvement. Our supplementary experiment results further confirmed that adjusting N management could improve the rice yield and eating quality with less N input. Thus, we propose the following adjusting N management strategies for rice sustainable production in China: (1) Decreasing the traditional high N rate is absolutely necessary, although it will slightly decrease rice yield, but significantly improve rice eating quality and N use efficiency; (2) Reducing the amount of late-stage N application appropriately could improve the rice eating quality; (3) Improving agronomic N use efficiency is the key to balance rice yield and eating quality. Our results provide an important reference for the future N management in rice production for the purpose of achieving high yield and better eating quality.

Sustainable Production Management Model for Small and Medium Enterprises in Some South-Central EU Countries

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are main generators of employment and economic development in European Union. In Croatia and Slovenia, SMEs in wood processing (C16) and furniture manufacturing (C31) also play an important role in social cohesion and development of rural areas. The aim of this research was to investigate the current situation in SMEs in wood processing and furniture manufacturing regarding driving parameters of business and production management system in the time of a disturbed market situation caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic. Two different questionnaires in an e-mail survey were used to collect data for this research from companies and from experts in the field of management, production and marketing. Various statistical tests were used using seven driving parameters on data collected from 212 SMEs. Also, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used on the data collected from 20 experts. Results showed that companies in the time of pandemic crisis and during the time of major disturbances in supply chain pay the most attention to their production program and quality of their products, and then to marketing activities and situation on the market. According to the results presented in this research, the management model can help SMEs managers, micro and small enterprises in particular, to improve their decision-making process, make the necessary innovations easier and faster, and maintain the sustainable business and production management system of their companies.

A sustainable production capability evaluation mechanism based on blockchain, LSTM, analytic hierarchy process for supply chain network

Due to the rapid development of information technology, supply chain network is evolving, which involves a higher level of interdependence between organisations. Conventional production capability evaluation relies on centralised approaches with limited sharing of performance and evaluation data. Besides, traditional evaluation methods are mainly based on subjective manual operation using limited data. In this paper, we propose a production capability evaluation system by incorporating Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning and blockchain technology for supply chain network. It contributes to achieving real-time data collection and automated enterprise production capability evaluation mechanism. Besides, blockchain technology is adopted to enable open and decentralised data storage and sharing, provide fair and automatic trading of data. The proposed system is evaluated through a simulation experiment. It demonstrated how to utilise the proposed system to choose suitable upstream enterprises. The successful development of the system could help to enhance production efficiency, reduce risk and provide a reasonable and more sustainable production management in supply chain network.

Environmental and economic risk management of seed maize production in Iran

Seed maize, as one of the most fundamental agricultural cereals with an important strategic status and function, is cultivated as an important crop in all Iranian provinces, and the government contributes to the sustainable planting of the crop by mitigating its revenue risk. However, sustainable production management of the product is impossible without taking into account environmental risks. Therefore, the present research aims to determine the status of each province relative to other provinces in seed maize production considering economic and environmental risk management, specifically the trade–off between economic and environmental risk by using Water Footprint (WF) as an environmental criterion and Gross Margin (GM) as an economic criterion. Iranian provinces were ranked using Second-Degree Stochastic Dominance (SSD) and Stochastic Dominance with Respect to a Function (SDRF) from an economic and environmental perspective and their trade-offs. According to the results, seed maize production in Iranian provinces is practiced without concomitant consideration of economic and environmental risks, which will not lead to long-run sustainable production. Areas were generally divided into three groups by comparing with current conditions, areas with high economic risk and environmental stability, vice versa and areas with less economic and environmental risk. Therefore, in order to manage the sustainable production of seed maize, different policies should be suggested in different areas.

Underpinning the Development of Seaweed Biotechnology: Cryopreservation of Brown Algae (Saccharina latissima) Gametophytes.

Sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) is an economically important species, and natural populations provide diverse and productive habitats as well as important ecosystem services. For seaweed aquaculture to be successful in newly emerging industry in Europe and other Western countries, it will have to develop sustainable production management strategies. A key feature in this process is the capacity to conserve genetic diversity for breeding programs aimed at developing seed stock for onward cultivation, as well as in the management of wild populations, as potentially interesting genetic resources are predicted to disappear due to climate change. In this study, the cryopreservation of male and female gametophytes (haploid life stage) of S. latissima by different combinations of two-step cooling methods and cryoprotectants was explored. We report here that cryopreservation constitutes an attractive option for the long-term preservation of S. latissima gametophytes, with viable cells in all treatment combinations. The highest viabilities for both male and female gametophytes were found using controlled-rate cooling methods combined with dimethyl sulfoxide 10% (v/v). Morphological normal sporophytes were observed to develop from cryopreserved vegetative gametophytic cells, independent of treatment. This indicates that cryopreservation is a useful preservation method for male and female S. latissima gametophytes.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) productivity in response to different fertilization strategies

The feasibility of reducing non-renewable natural resources use in agriculture, associated with the
 need for ecologically-appropriate of organic waste disposal has become an important element in planning
 more sustainable agricultural systems. Consequently, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the response
 of the common bean, growing in an Eutrophic Latosol in the city of Buri-SP, to the application of organic and
 mineral fertilizers. An experiment was carried out in the 2015 agricultural year, using a randomized block
 design with 4 replicates and 5 treatments, these being: 1 - mineral fertilizer; 2 - organomineral fertilizer; 3 -
 sheep manure compost; 4 - chicken bedding compost, and control (soil without fertilizer application). The
 tested variables were: pod length (cm); per plant pod number; per pod seed number; mass of 100 grains
 (g); and grain yield (kg ha-1). Organomineral fertilizer provided the most significant increase in pod length,
 per plant pod number, and yield compared to the other treatments, except for sheep manure compost, where
 productivity did not differ. In addition, with the exception of mass per 100 seeds, there was no difference
 between treatments using organic fertilization and mineral fertilizer. Under the current study´s experimental
 conditions, organomineral fertilizer and sheep manure compost produced the highest productivity for common
 beans. Thus, mineral fertilization can be replaced by organic or organomineral alternatives, so helping to
 produce more sustainable production management and help reduce environmental impacts.

Estimation of spatial mean soil water storage using temporal stability at the hillslope scale in black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) stands

Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) has been extensively planted on the Loess Plateau for soil and water conservation, but afforestation with this non-native tree has produced some negative effects such as soil desiccation. Knowledge of the soil water storage (SWS) within soil profiles in black locust stands is thus critical for optimization of forest management for sustainable production. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the temporal stability of SWS to identify the most time-stable locations (MTSLs) for reliably estimating the mean SWS and to further investigate the factors influencing its temporal stability. The SWS values of various soil layers (0–1, 1–2, and 2–3m) were measured from May 2014 to October 2015 at 70 locations along two 187-m long transects on a hillslope covered with black locust in the Loess Plateau, China. A total of 18 SWS datasets were collected over the period of measurement. Results indicated that the temporal variation of spatial mean SWS decreased and the spatial variation of SWS increased with increasing soil depth. A strong temporal persistence in all soil layers was demonstrated by high Spearman's rank correlation coefficients (P<0.01), with the temporal stability in deep soil layers relatively more stable than in shallow layer. Among four methods (MRD, mean relative difference; SDRD, standard deviation of relative difference; ITS, index of temporal stability; and MABE, mean absolute bias error) used to identify the MTSLs for the estimation of the mean SWS, the ITS provided the best results. The MTSLs identified in diverse layers of the first transect were then used to successfully predict the mean SWS along the second transect (R2>0.91). Elevation, soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, leaf area index, and fine root area density were the major factors influencing the temporal stability of SWS. The results of this study were useful for estimating mean SWS and could improve soil water management and hydrological applications in sloping black locust forested areas of the Loess Plateau.
