Charting a Course for Sustainable Hospitality by Exploring Leadership Theories and Their Implications

A literature review was undertaken to examine the present state of research on sustainability-related leadership in the hospitality field. Twenty-two articles from renowned hospitality journals were carefully selected for analysis. The review findings indicate that several leadership theories, like transformational and responsible leadership, have been employed to comprehend the influence of leadership on sustainability performance in organizations. Most of the research conducted so far has focused on Asian cultures and hotel settings, with quantitative surveys being the predominant research method utilized. Notably, environmental sustainability has received more attention than social sustainability concerns within the existing body of literature. Based on the identified research gaps, this paper sets the groundwork for future research on sustainable leadership. By addressing the limitations observed in current research, further investigations can expand our knowledge and understanding of sustainable leadership practices within the hospitality industry.

Stepping Towards Sustainable Leadership: Analysis of Leadership Practices In The Mining Industry In Supporting The Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals

This research aims to fill the research gap by analyzing sustainable leadership practices in the mining industry, expanding the understanding from previous sustainable leadership literature. The focus is to provide a deep understanding of the role of sustainable leadership in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Qualitative methods are employed to comprehend social phenomena through the collection and analysis of descriptive and non-numeric data. The study explores "Sustainable Leadership Practices at PT ABC and PT XYZ in Supporting the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals." The findings indicate that PT ABC and PT XYZ implement sustainable leadership practices, including commitments to social, economic, and environmental aspects. However, they face challenges such as resource constraints and organizational cultural changes. Leaders in both companies play a crucial role in communicating the importance of sustainability and leading change. Managerial implications involve developing internal policies that strengthen sustainable leadership practices and enhancing employee awareness. Management needs to address financial and cultural challenges while ensuring compliance with regulations. Investor implications include a deeper understanding of the company's commitment to social, economic, and environmental aspects as an evaluation factor for long-term sustainability.

Sustainable leadership practices among school leaders and their relationship with school climate

Sustainable leadership practices ensure that the mission and vision of a school continue despite changes and challenges. Such a practice can build the capacity of the organization based on the environment, especially in shaping a better school climate. Past studies have found a significant link between school leadership practices and the school climate. However, there has been little discussion about the phenomenal relationship the in rural national secondary school (SMK) context. Hence, this study aimed to identify the level of sustainable leadership practices of principals and their relationship with the school climate in rural SMK in Malaysia. A total of 450 teachers were selected to participate in the study using proportionate random sampling and questionnaires were adopted as the research method. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the research population located in rural areas, data were collected through the mail. The findings showed that the level of sustainable leadership practices of the principals was high (M=4.18, SD=0.52), along with a high level of the school climate (M=4.14, SD=0.51). Sustainable leadership practices were also positively associated with school climate (r=0.607, p<0.05). These findings can be used by the Ministry of Education Malaysia to enhance sustainable leadership practices in the national education leaders professional qualifications designed specifically for future school leaders in Malaysia. In this regard, it is hoped that these findings will enrich the literature on sustainable leadership practices and the school climate.

Exploring Transformational Leadership Practices among School Leaders in Korean Schools

This study explored transformational leadership practices among school leaders in Korean Schools specifically in Baguio City, Philippines. Utilizing a combined-method approach, the respondent pool consisted of 20 school heads and 108 teachers from three Korean schools in Baguio City and La Trinidad, carefully selected through purposive sampling. The data collection process encompassed dual sets of questionnaires and interviews tailored for both school heads and teachers. The gathered data was processed using frequency counts and percentages, weighted mean, F-test, and Pearson correlation which formed the basis for the discussion and interpretation of data in the results and discussion section of the paper. Findings revealed consistent engagement in highly practiced transformational behaviors, with a notable emphasis on clear communication, continuous support, coaching, and mentorship. Education level and tenure of service emerged as key factors, indicating a significant effect on leadership practices and their impact on teachers. However, challenges such as resource constraints pose hurdles that need addressing. Recommendations include recognition programs for academic accomplishments, fostering intergenerational collaboration, and implementing personalized coaching and mentorship initiatives to enhance leadership effectiveness. Strategies to overcome resource constraints involve exploring partnerships and optimizing resource utilization for sustainable transformational leadership practices. The Korean schools may implement suggested strategies, promoting the effectiveness of school head transformational leadership practices and ultimately contributing to a thriving educational environment.

Sustainable leadership practices in construction: Building a resilient society

While pivotal for economic growth, the global construction sector confronts critical challenges due to its resource-intensive practices and environmental impact. Leadership within this industry becomes essential as the imperative for sustainable development gains prominence. This study addresses a significant knowledge gap by investigating the nexus between sustainable leadership practices and the construction sector, focusing on Pakistan. A comprehensive framework is developed by combining literature review, expert analysis, and robust statistical methods. Data collection involved questionnaire involving 206 participants from construction industry professionals in Pakistan. The study examines the relation of green building design, certification standards, life cycle assessment, renewable energy integration, resilient infrastructure, social equity and inclusion, and waste management with sustainable leadership practices. The findings affirm the positive and significant relationships between these dimensions and sustainable leadership. The study contributes to academia and industry, offering a novel understanding of how sustainable leadership can drive resilient and eco-conscious practices in construction. These insights hold implications for shaping policies, fostering industry transformation, and creating a sustainable and resilient built environment for the future.

An Overview of Distributed Leadership and its Shortcomings in Educational Settings

However, it is essential to acknowledge the potential shortcomings and limitations associated with distributed leadership. SUSTAINABLE LEADERSHIP PRACTICES AMONG SCHOOLS PRINCIPALS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH TEACHER COMMITMENT IN MALAYSIA RURAL SCHOOL

Through sustainable leadership practices school are able to maintain their missions and goals in facing difficulties and challenges. Such a practice enhances teacher commitment, especially in shaping a better school working environment in achieving the organization goals. Past studies have found a significant link between sustainable leadership practices and the teacher commitment. However, there has been little discussion about the phenomenal relationship in rural National Secondary School context. Hence, this study surveyed the level of sustainable leadership practices among school principals and the teacher commitment in SMK in rural part of Malaysia. It also investigated whether there is a relationship between both variables. Using proportionate random sampling, 450 teachers represented the sample. Due of the COVID-19 epidemic and the research population's remote location, data were collected via mail. The findings revealed that principals had a high level of sustainable leadership practises (M = 4.18, SD = 0.52) as well as a very high degree of teacher commitment (M = 4.33, SD = 0.45). Teacher commitment was also positively connected with sustainable leadership practises (r = 0.503, p 0.05). The Ministry of Education Malaysia can apply these findings to improve sustainable leadership practises in the National Education Principals Professional Qualifications, which are intended exclusively for future Malaysian school principals. In this perspective, it is hoped that these findings will contribute to the body of knowledge on sustainable leadership practises and teacher commitment.

Competences Associated to Sustainable Leadership Practices: A Study Carried Out in the Public City Administration of Fazenda Rio Grande, State of Paraná

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to identify the competences associated to sustainable leadership practices in the public city administration of Fazenda Rio Grande, Paraná. Literature review: The study addresses the concepts of professional competences and sustainable leadership and how they can be applied to the public sector from the perspective of public city administrators. Method: This is a qualitative and exploratory study that was carried out in the City Hall of Fazenda Rio Grande, Paraná. It derived out of the analysis of official documents and semi-structured interviews conducted with eleven public city administrators. Results and conclusion: The study has revealed that the necessary competences for sustainable leadership practices in the public administration of Fazenda Rio Grande, Paraná are: public resource management, strategic planning, focusing on citizens, people management, environmental sustainability orientation, and environmental awareness. Discussion: The study can provide public administrators with a way to reflect upon their practices, which can positively impact the improvement of their competences and conduct related to the performance of their duties, along with working as a model for public policies characterized by social transformation. Originality/value: Identifying the competences associated with sustainable leadership practices in public administration facilitates reflection about the enhancement or development of attributes that are essential for improving the quality of life and well-being of citizens, along with promoting sustainable territorial development at the local level.

Sustainable Leadership Practices Based on the Logic of the Honeybee Pyramid—Comparison of Hungarian and Polish SMEs

The popularity of sustainability as a research topic in different areas of organisational functioning is marked by the number of studies on the topic. Significantly less research is addressing the factors that fundamentally influence the functioning of organisations. Among these factors, this paper will review the criteria for sustainable leadership. Competition in the economy has made it necessary to build sustainability capabilities in all areas of business, of which the practice of sustainable leadership is a fundamental requirement for making strategic decisions. This paper aims to examine the thinking, leadership styles, and decisions of leaders of organisations in everyday practice based on the pyramid logic of sustainable leadership. In this research, structured interviews with managers of Hungarian (32) and Polish (28) organisations were evaluated using the ‘Voyant tools’ 2.6.9. software. The results show that there is a significant difference between the Hungarian and Polish leadership mindsets, with both samples only partially meeting the expectations of what can be considered a sustainable leadership style in the spirit of the ‘Honeybee’ approach. Out of the 14 basic elements of the pyramid, the leaders of both nations reach the desired level in five cases. This study provides useful lessons for SME managers in developing sustainability management practices.

Sustainable leadership best practices in enhancing business resilience and performance of robusta coffee farmers

Purpose — This research aims to demonstrate the best practices of sustainable leadership in the creation of business resilience.Method — This is qualitative research with a descriptive method. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with six participants in North Lombok using purposive sampling, as well as observed post-harvest Robusta coffee products.Result — The sustainable leadership practices found in this research are innovation, social responsibility, environmental responsibility, and ethical behavior. These are needed to empower and increase business resilience and performance. Furthermore, greater opportunities for community benefit and environmental sustainability can be achieved through these practices.Contribution — Current research on how sustainable leadership theory can affect the practices of small and medium enterprises is still inadequate, with insufficient studies available. This study addresses the gap by showcasing several best practices of sustainable leadership demonstrated by coffee SMEs in North Lombok and enhancing the emerging sustainable leadership theory in this area.

Sustainable competitiveness practices of SMEs: a strategic framework using integrated DEMATEL-NK model

Purpose It is critical for small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) to review and monitor sustainability performance indicators across three dimensions: economic, environmental and social to attain long-term competitiveness. SMEs lack a holistic perspective on sustainability; they are frequently hindered from contemplating environmentally favorable investments beyond what is legally needed. The purpose of this paper is to present a joint Decision-making trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and NK methodology for developing a process model for introducing and implementing sustainable competitiveness practices for SMEs. Design/methodology/approach This study addresses the issue by adopting a sustainable competitiveness practices framework and applying a novel method that integrates DEMATEL and NK model for evaluating and developing the implementation path model for Indian manufacturing SMEs. Findings This paper also demonstrates that not only the relational practice itself but also the order in which the relational practices are implemented can be related to performance. According to the authors' preliminary findings, organizations in this study should first implement a social dimension, which includes sustainable leadership, knowledge sharing, etc., then an economic dimension like quality, sustainable innovations, etc., and finally environmental dimensions like green marketing, solid waste reduction, etc., with their management for competitiveness. Research limitations/implications These findings offer some preliminary information as well as advice for managers and policymakers looking to integrate sustainable efforts. Practical implications This study asserts that not only the interdependent practice but also the sequence of implementation is important and can relate to the performance. The path result shows that the organization develops first sustainable design and product development (economic), sustainable leadership (social) and solid waste reduction (environmental) practices. Originality/value There is no such study that develops a process model for introducing and implementing sustainable competitiveness of SMEs which assesses and analyzes the interdependencies across relational behaviors, to the best of authors’ knowledge. The novelty of this work lies in integrating DEMATEL-NK model approach.

IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE LEADERSHIP AND SUSTAINABLE LEADERSHIP PRACTICES AMONG MIDDLE-LEVEL HUNGARIAN MANAGERS

Corporations, managers, and employees are still having difficulties comprehending the idea of sustainable leadership and identifying this concept itself is a challenge for modern businesses. A new and expanded definition of leadership that is founded on sustainability principles, sustainable leadership practices, and developing an inclusive, collaborative, and responsive leadership approach is known as sustainable leadership. A better understanding of the idea of sustainable leadership and sustainable leadership practices we conducted research among Hungarian middle level managers. Main purpose of this study is to examine the level of sustainable leadership skills of middle-level Hungarian managers in a variety of industrial sectors and which sustainable leadership practices with its subcomponents can be preferred to implement in organizations by Hungarian managers. Questionnaire method was used among 201 middle-level Hungarian managers. Findings show that there is a slight difference between non sustainable leadership skills and sustainable leadership skills among managers, general results showed that sustainable leadership scores of the Hungarian managers (3.20) stayed below non- sustainable leadership scores (3.75) that indicates Hungarian managers need to improve themselves relate to sustainable leadership skills based on applying sustainable leadership practices in organizations. Among sustainable leadership practices key performance drivers (3.69) are the most applicable sustainable leadership practices among the middle level Hungarian managers comparing to foundation practices (3.35) and higher-level practices (3.56) based on scores. Among subcomponents of the sustainable leadership practices score of managers centered leadership (3.4), employee centered leadership is the highest score (3.9), organizational profit (3.2), employee’s engagement (3.4) and lowest score is the knowledge sharing culture (2.7) among the middle level Hungarian managers.

Literature review: sustainable leadership

Employees, leaders, and organizations continue to struggle to comprehend the concept of sustainable leadership. It is a problem for today's organizations to identify this concept itself. Sustainable leadership refers to a new and enlarged concept of leadership that is based on sustainability principles, sustainable leadership practices, and building an inclusive, cooperative, and responsive leadership approach. The purpose of this study is to provide a better understanding of the concept of sustainable leadership, and it does this by situating sustainability within the context of leadership and clarifying the idea of sustainable leadership based on sustainability and sustainable development, styles of sustainable leadership, characteristics of sustainable leaders, and practices of sustainable leadership.

Sustainable Leadership Practices and Competencies of SMEs for Sustainability and Resilience: A Community-Based Social Enterprise Study

Current studies on how a sustainability leadership theory can influence the practice of SMEs, such as a context of community-based social enterprises, is still lacking, with scanty research to date. These small enterprises in the bottom of the pyramid settings are indeed the important socio-economic backbone of many nations around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic crisis has significantly hit all sectors and has adversely impacted them. Our study aims to broaden the limited scholarly knowledge and advance the developing SL theory in this realm. Hence, our critical research inquiries address: (1) What are the essential sustainable leadership practices and sustainability competencies for sustainability and resilience in a CBSE context? (2) How can a CBSE business apply the theoretical frameworks in practice to survive and thrive for sustainable futures, especially during the COVID-19 era? This study employs an integrative theoretical examination of sustainable leadership frameworks and sustainability leadership competencies to investigate the sustainable business practices in the SME sector, particularly in a community-based social enterprise context. Our business case centers on a green, social enterprise, which is an award-winner of Best Responsible Tourism and is located in a small coastal fishing village of Thailand. Using a case study research method, the multi-data collection methods include in-depth interviews and focus groups with multiple stakeholders. Evidence was found to comply with six-category sustainable leadership practices and five essential sustainability leadership competencies to varying degrees. The findings suggest that sustainable leaders and entrepreneurs should develop and integrate the value-based practices and competencies (i.e., strategic, systems thinking, interpersonal, anticipatory, ethical competencies) in business. The critical sustainable practices include enabling human capital with care for stakeholders, fostering ethical values and norms via altruism, cultivating social capital through social innovation, and supporting pro-environmental behavior and social responsibility to achieve inclusive growth, sustainability and resilience. The research results advance the theoretical development of the interconnected fields of sustainability leadership and sustainable entrepreneurship. An alternative sustainable business model for sustainability and resilience is also proposed. Overall, the insightful findings can provide practical advice and beneficial policy implications for sustainable futures.

Sustainable Leadership Practices in Public Relations: A Study on TED Leadership Talks

TED is a conference where leaders with different interests share their experiences. That conferences are held several times a year. Leaders contribute to their leadership skills by exchanging information at these conferences. In this research it is aimed to examine TED’s talks according to public relations leadership models within the framework of the concept of sustainable leadership. The research is essential in terms of revealing the leadership models and sustainable leadership roles in leadership speeches. In this context, the research sample consists of three speeches that received the most attention. Content and discourse analysis were used together as a research method. TED’s leadership speech content was first classified by the content analysis method in version 20.2.2 of the Maxqda program. Then, the obtained categories were also analyzed by the discourse analysis method. In this context, charismatic leadership, visionary leadership, and success-based leadership models were mentioned in leadership speeches. Leaders’ ability to change the world, being strong, reliable/transparent, and being open to learning were highlighted in the speech content. It has been seen that leadership roles and perceptions shape macro discourse in TED’s leadership speeches. In this context, it has been determined that the macro discourses mentioned are formed through the role of the leader to unite his followers around a belief or purpose, to foresee change, to provide consultancy, to create innovation, and to manage the masses. While micro-discourse was shaped around everyday language, establishing causality and reference connections in speech rhetoric drew attention.

A conceptual framework for the role of leadership in financial innovation adoption in the Australian banking industry

Despite being known as one of the most innovative countries in the world, innovation in Australia has remained stagnant since the 1990s. The main objective of this study is to analyse and evaluate the role of leadership in financial innovation adoption in the Australian banking industry. Specifically, this study focuses on exploring the drivers of innovation, testing the skill and knowledge of leaders to adopt an innovation, the impact of different leadership styles on innovation, and based on the nature of innovation propose the suitable leadership framework for Australian banks using a conceptual framework. The findings of this study are expected to allow Australian banks in evaluating their leaders’ role and formulate relevant strategies to ensure successful innovation adoption. It is projected that the findings will be robust for the businesses as the internal and external shareholders working with leaders to enhance organizational performance can befit from the insight provided in this study. Moreover, this study is projected to assist in charting directions for business leaders in the context of effective leadership practices necessary for improving employees’ retention, profitability, and growth which will ultimately contribute to business practices. The findings will help in providing a better understanding of leadership practices required for leaders’ professional growth which may create more job opportunities. The leaders may learn the ethical and sustainable leadership practices to meet the social expectations through compact strategies which may contribute to social change.

Frugal-based innovation model for sustainable development: technological and market turbulence

PurposeThis study draws on the upper echelon perspective and effectuation theory to put insights on the relationship between sustainable leadership and sustainable performance.Design/methodology/approachThe study had adopted the cluster-sampling approach to collect data from 500 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) established in China and India with 46.60% response rate. The SmartPLS 3.0 was employed for data analysis.FindingsThis study verified the mediating role of frugal innovation in emerging markets. Both market and technological turbulence significantly moderated the sustainable leadership-frugal innovation relationship. Nevertheless, the effect of sustainable leadership on frugal innovation did not vary for the different values of entrepreneurial bricolage.Originality/valueThis article contributes by revealing the moderating effect of market and technological turbulence as moderator. Greater market and technological turbulence led to greater impact of sustainable leadership practices on frugal innovation.
