Enhancing Low Voltage Ride-Through Resilience using Empowering Solar Energy Strategies

The rapid advancement of Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) technology has been highlighted by the exponential rise of photovoltaic (PV) generation systems. An extensive analysis of LVRT methods specifically designed for PV generating systems is presented in this research. Important topics like main causes, current control schemes, power balance and overall solutions are the main focus of the review. Moreover, it provides comprehensive insights and elaborates on integrated solutions intended for large-scale PV systems. The objective of this research is to improve the resilience and reliability of renewable energy sources, especially solar photovoltaic systems, against grid disruptions and voltage changes by investigating LVRT approaches in solar power systems. Enhancing the integration of solar power systems into current electrical grids, reducing downtime, and optimizing system performance are the objectives in order to accelerate the shift to a more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure.

Radiometric Infrared Thermography of Solar Photovoltaic Systems: An Explainable Predictive Maintenance Approach for Remote Aerial Diagnostic Monitoring

Solar photovoltaic (SPV) arrays are crucial components of clean and sustainable energy infrastructure. However, SPV panels are susceptible to thermal degradation defects that can impact their performance, thereby necessitating timely and accurate fault detection to maintain optimal energy generation. The considered case study focuses on an intelligent fault detection and diagnosis (IFDD) system for the analysis of radiometric infrared thermography (IRT) of SPV arrays in a predictive maintenance setting, enabling remote inspection and diagnostic monitoring of the SPV power plant sites. The proposed IFDD system employs a custom-developed deep learning approach which relies on convolutional neural networks for effective multiclass classification of defect types. The diagnosis of SPV panels is a challenging task for issues such as IRT data scarcity, defect-patterns’ complexity, and low thermal image acquisition quality due to noise and calibration issues. Hence, this research carefully prepares a customized high-quality but severely imbalanced six-class thermographic radiometric dataset of SPV panels. With respect to previous approaches, numerical temperature values in floating-point are used to train and validate the predictive models. The trained models display high accuracy for efficient thermal anomaly diagnosis. Finally, to create a trust in the IFDD system, the process underlying the classification model is investigated with perceptive explainability, for portraying the most discriminant image features, and mathematical-structure-based interpretability, to achieve multiclass feature clustering.

Optimal integration and planning of PV and wind renewable energy sources into distribution networks using the hybrid model of analytical techniques and metaheuristic algorithms: A deep learning-based approach

The optimal integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) into distribution networks is crucial for sustainable energy generation. However, existing approaches utilized for optimal RES integration, including metaheuristic and analytical methods, exhibit limitations. Analytical methods are simple to implement, computationally efficient, and able to model power system mechanisms, yet they face scalability issues, making them inefficient for large-scale distribution systems. On the other hand, metaheuristic approaches, while flexible for complex problems, suffer from premature convergence problems, limiting their application in real distribution networks. To address these issues, this paper introduces a novel hybrid model that combines the strengths of analytical and metaheuristic techniques. The proposed model employs a deep learning-based method called bi-directional long short-term memory (B-LSTM) network is utilized to handle the uncertainties associated with the Photovoltaic (PV) and Wind Turbine (WT) generation and load demand. Subsequently, a distinctive analytical multi-objective index-based procedure is developed to minimize the real and reactive energy loss and voltage deviation by analyzing the branch current change caused by the RES penetration in distribution networks. The optimization problem is then solved using the binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) technique. Importantly, the presented method considers the long-term nature of optimal RES integration and reflects the seasonal impacts of the load and RES output powers. The proposed approach is applied to the IEEE 33-bus test system. The simulation results show that the introduced hybrid model, by addressing the limitations of existing approaches, offers a promising solution for efficient and effective RES integration in distribution systems while requiring low computational effort, thereby advancing the transition towards sustainable energy infrastructure.

Energy Production Optimization by Positioning of Solar Panels and Surveillance System with Cleaning of Panels

The pursuit of efficient and sustainable energy generation has led to the widespread adoption of solar panels. However, the optimal performance of these panels can be hindered by factors such as dirt accumulation, suboptimal orientation, and security concerns. To address these challenges, we propose an integrated Solar Panel Tracking, Cleaning, and Surveillance System (SPTCSS). Our system employs advanced tracking technology to optimize solar panel orientation, ensuring maximum exposure to sunlight throughout the day. Additionally, it incorporates automated cleaning mechanisms, utilizing water and brushes to remove dust, debris, and other contaminants, thereby maintaining peak efficiency. Furthermore, the surveillance aspect of the system provides real-time monitoring and security features, safeguarding against theft, vandalism, and unauthorized access. Through a network of sensors and cameras, any anomalies or suspicious activities can be promptly detected and addressed. By integrating tracking, cleaning, and surveillance functionalities into a single system, our solution offers a comprehensive approach to enhancing the performance, longevity, and security of solar panel installations. This not only maximizes energy generation but also minimizes maintenance requirements and mitigates risks, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and reliable renewable energy infrastructure

Reverse Atom Capture on Perovskite Surface Enabling Robust and Efficient Cathode for Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells.

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) hold potential for sustainable energy conversion, yet their widespread application is hindered by the sluggish kinetics and inferior stability of cathode materials. Here, a facile and efficient reverse atom capture technique is developed to manipulate the surface chemistry of PrBa0.5Sr0.5Co1.5Fe0.5O5+ δ (PBSCF) cathode for PCFCs. This method successfully captures segregated Ba and Sr cations on the PBSCF surface using W species, creating a (Ba/Sr)(Co/Fe/W)O3- δ (BSCFW)@PBSCF heterostructure. Benefiting from enhanced kinetics of proton-involved oxygen reduction reaction and strengthened chemical stability, the single cell using the optimized 2W-PBSCF cathode demonstrates an exceptional peak power density of 1.32W cm-2 at 650°C and maintains durable performance for 240h. Theoretical calculations unveil that the BSCFW perovskite delivers lower oxygen vacancy formation energy, hydration energy, and proton transfer energy compared to the PBSCF perovskite. This protocol offers new insights into advanced atom capture techniques for sustainable energy infrastructures.

By examining real-world case studies and evaluating the benefits and limitations, this article aims to shed light on the practical implications of employing Game Theory models in optimizing Smart Grids for the seamless integration of renewable energy. Looking forward, it explores future trends and developments, emphasizing the continuing significance of Game Theory in shaping the future of sustainable energy infrastructure. The results underscore the transformative potential of game theory in shaping the future of smart grids and advancing the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure.

FINANCING GREEN ENERGY FOR ENHANCING ENERGY SECURITY IN UKRAINE

This paper examines the financing of green energy initiatives as a critical element in strengthening Ukraine's energy security, especially in the context of post-war reconstruction and the need for sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure. The study aims to assess the potential and challenges of investing in green energy in Ukraine, considering the destruction caused by Russian military actions in the winter of 2022-2023, and the need for recovery based on sustainable models. In this regard, the obtained results emphasize the importance of creating a reliable and decarbonized energy sector, driven by both domestic needs and international cooperation with the EU and other partners. The analysis shows that despite strong support for the green energy transition, the development of the sector is hindered by the high capital intensity required for green technologies, which are often not competitive without government subsidies. This requires a careful balance between innovation and commercial viability of green energy projects, highlighting the need for public and private investments in technologies that can compete with traditional sources of energy in the long term and developing new financing tools for Ukraine. The conclusions indicate that a multifaceted approach is needed to ensure Ukraine's energy future and minimize risks. Such an approach should include policy reforms, strategic investments in proven green technologies, and fostering partnerships to bridge the commercialization gap. Policymakers face the dual challenge of accelerating the energy transition while managing financial constraints exacerbated by military spending, highlighting the trade-off between rapid development and the risks associated with financing innovation. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of how green energy financing mechanisms can enhance Ukraine's energy security, suggesting broader implications for policy, investment, and technological innovation in the context of Ukraine's post-war recovery and future resilience.

Regional energy transition governance for the co-transformation of sustainable energy infrastructure as a public service in rural areas

Die dringende Transformation unseres Energiesystems hin zu einer nachhaltigen Infrastruktur der Daseinsvorsorge scheitert in der regionalen Umsetzung regelmäßig an raumbezogenen und gesellschaftlichen Anforderungen des ländlichen Raums. In diesem Beitrag werden am Beispiel eines transdisziplinären Projektes Dilemmata in der partizipativen Umsetzung der regionalen Energiewende identifiziert und Gelingensbedingungen einer raumsensiblen Energiewende-Governance formuliert. Wie mit dem entwickelten Governance-Ansatz zur „Co-Transformation“ gezeigt wird, können kontextsensitive Partizipationsformen der Co-Regulierung, Co-Allokation und Co-Visionierung zur Verfahrens‑, Verteilungs- sowie Zukunftsgerechtigkeit und damit zur Akzeptabilität der regionalen Energiewende als Daseinsvorsorgeinfrastruktur im ländlichen Raum beitragen. Zentrale Maßnahmenfelder sind dabei ergebnisoffene und regional angepasste Formen der Mitwirkung durch die Co-Regulierung im Planungsprozess, Ansätze zur räumlichen Co-Allokation energiewendebezogener Belastungen und lokaler Mehrwerte sowie die Co-Visionierung regionaler Energiezukünfte und daraus abzuleitender regionaler Energievisionen.

Energy Consumption Forecasting through Data Mining

Forecasting is vital for effective energy management systems to project future energy requirements and establish demand-supply equilibrium. In this study, we propose to evaluate the effectiveness of a new weather-free forecasting model. The model is created using advanced data mining techniques on an extensive database that contains relevant historical power production data. The motivation behind developing a weather-free model stems from the challenges associated with obtaining reliable weather data in specific scenarios and the desire to reduce computational complexity. By eliminating the reliance on weather data, our model offers a promising alternative approach to energy forecasting, potentially enhancing accuracy and efficiency. In this work, our objectives are twofold. Firstly, we aim to evaluate the interplay between anomaly detection techniques and forecasting model accuracy. Anomalies in energy consumption patterns can significantly impact forecasting accuracy, and thus, understanding their detection and management is crucial. Secondly, we seek to determine the optimal performance metric among three defined metrics explicitly tailored for this application. By addressing these objectives, we aim to contribute to advancing energy forecasting methodologies, providing valuable insights for practical implementation in energy management systems. Our findings have the potential to inform decision-making processes and optimize resource allocation in energy distribution networks, ultimately leading to more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructures.

A global dataset of carbon pumping by the world’s largest tropical rivers

The eco-morphodynamic activity of large tropical rivers interacts with riparian vegetation causing implications for the carbon cycle within inland waters. Through a multi-temporal analysis of satellite data spanning the years 2000–2019, we analyzed rivers exceeding 200 m in width across the tropical regions, revealing a Carbon Pump mechanism driving an annual mobilization of 12.45 million tons of organic carbon. The study identifies fluvial eco-morphological signatures as proxies for carbon mobilization, emphasizing the link between river migration and carbon dynamics. To enhance accessibility, our results are encapsulated in a visually compelling WebGIS application, offering a comprehensive understanding of the eco-geomorphological influences on the global carbon cycle within large tropical rivers. Our findings are instrumental in determining the carbon intensity of future hydropower dams, thereby contributing to informed decision-making in the realm of sustainable energy infrastructure. This study elucidates the intricate relationships that govern the nexus of tropical river dynamics, riparian ecosystems, and the global carbon cycle.

T-spherical fuzzy interactive Dubois–Prade information aggregation approach for evaluating low-carbon technology impact and environmental mitigation

The concept of T-spherical fuzzy sets (T-SFSs) provides a robust optimization approach to deal with uncertainties in environmental concerns. The main objective of this paper is to introduce a hybrid approach for the power system reforms and advances of low-carbon technology to address environmental concerns as well as transition towards a more sustainable energy infrastructure. To meet these objectives, various aggregation operators (AOs) are developed named as T-spherical fuzzy Dubois–Prade (T-SFDP), T-spherical fuzzy interactive Dubois–Prade weighted average (T-SFIDPWA), T-spherical fuzzy interactive Dubois–Prade ordered weighted average (T-SFIDPOWA), T-spherical fuzzy interactive Dubois–Prade weighted geometric (T-SFIDPWG), and T-spherical fuzzy interactive Dubois–Prade ordered weighted geometric (T-SFIDPOWG). These AOs are integrated in the construction CRITIC-EDAS framework, facilitating a comprehensive assessment and ranking of proposals. This paper underscores the methodology's efficacy and precision through rigorous validation with CRITIC-MAUT, CRITIC-ARAS, CRITIC-EDAS, and CRITIC-MABAC analyses, showcasing its ability to discern and prioritize reform initiatives with exactitude. Beyond enhancing the comprehension of reform proposals, this hybrid approach establishes a benchmark for future evaluations, significantly contributing to the dynamic landscape of power system optimization. The methodology's clarity and precision offer decision-makers a valuable tool for the thorough assessment and prioritization of power system reforms initiatives, fostering sustainability and environmentally conscious advancements.

An Analysis of Two Case Studies on the Construction of Underground Caverns-A Focus on the Tiantai Pumped Storage Station

This paper presents a numerical analysis of two case studies on the construction of underground caverns by FLAC3D, with a specific focus on the Tiantai Pumped Storage Power Station. During the construction period, two main problems, which are crane beam stability and rock support, have been numerically analysed and addressed. The first case study examines the influence of rock wall crane beam support on excavation stability. It has been proven that The reinforcement of connected concrete enhances integrity but may lead to localized cracking. Moreover, over-excavation reinforcement marginally improves anchor safety. The second case study investigates abnormal anchor stress in a powerhouse resulting from excavation. Recommended measures include conducting timely stability evaluations, identifying weakened zones to control rock stress relaxation effects, and establishing effective feedback mechanisms. By enhancing the safety of pumped storage power stations, promoting sustainable energy infrastructure, and improving the design and construction processes of such stations, this research paper aims to contribute to the overall development and success of these projects. In conclusion, the paper has discussed the rock wall crane beam stability and rock support effect, which implement the lack of this type of numerical analysis in underground cavern group construction. Also, it is recommended to accurately determine the rock mass mechanics parameters and timely support the excavated spaces to prevent abnormal increases in anchor stress.

Seq2Seq-Based-Day-Ahead Scheduling for SCUC in Islanded Power Systems with Limited Intermittent Generation

Due to their dependence on intermittent renewable energy sources, island power systems, which are generally located in remote places or on islands, offer particular issues for day-ahead scheduling. Using the capabilities of neural networks, we offer a Seq2Seq-based technique for day-ahead scheduling, which increases the precision and flexibility of unit commitment choices. The attention mechanisms in the Seq2Seq model are trained with historical data that includes projections for intermittent generation, demand, and unit commitment choices. The model is tested for its capacity to incorporate dynamic temporal relationships and deal with regenerative uncertainty. Seq2Seq models, a kind of deep learning approach, have shown impressive performance in several applications requiring sequence prediction. Uncertainty in renewable energy production, energy demand forecasts, and security limitations are all addressed in this work as Seq2Seq algorithms are applied to microgrid SCUC. In comparison to conventional scheduling approaches, the results show potential gains in prediction accuracy and operational efficiency. This study demonstrates how Seq2Seq models may be used to improve the longevity and dependability of isolated electrical grids and the way for the development of more effective, sustainable, and resilient energy infrastructure by contributing to the advancement of the area of microgrid optimization.

Carbon-Energy Synergetic Energy Power System Economic Dispatch Method

Low carbon is a key driver for the future development of power systems. This paper proposes a carbon-energy synergetic approach for economic dispatch in energy power systems. Firstly, by integrating multi-energy conversion models and carbon emission flow theories, a coupled interactive mechanism model is constructed. Building upon this foundation, an economic optimization dispatch model for comprehensive energy power systems is introduced, leveraging the synergistic value of carbon energy. This method supports economic dispatch in comprehensive energy power systems, considering both security and economic requirements while reducing carbon emissions. This integrated approach offers a promising solution for achieving low-carbon operational objectives and supporting the transition to sustainable energy infrastructure. Typical case studies in this paper validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Demand Response and HVAC Controls in Smart Grid Integration

This extensive research paper meticulously investigates the intricate synergies between demand response strategies and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) controls within the dynamic realm of smart grid integration. As the global energy landscape undergoes transformative changes driven by technological advancements and sustainability imperatives, the study critically examines the symbiotic relationship between consumers, HVAC systems, and the smart grid. The paramount importance of this interaction is underscored, emphasizing its pivotal role in achieving elevated levels of energy efficiency, grid reliability, and sustainability. (Invited) A Sustainable Future Fueled By Science: Recent Advances in Power-to-X Activities at Topsoe

Topsoe aims at being recognized as the global leader in carbon emission reduction technologies by 2024, by developing a wide range of energy-efficient solutions to produce sustainable transportation fuels, such as ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen. With over 80 years of expertise in heterogeneous catalysis and its application to industrial chemical processes, Topsoe is now striving to develop strong Power-to-X solutions to fuel the transition towards a sustainable chemical industry and energy infrastructure. One of the key-technology that Topsoe has envisioned for such transition is the solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology, well-recognized as the most energy-efficient amongst the electrolysis solutions. Here, Topsoe’s expertise in heterogeneous catalysis also plays a role in ensuring an effective downstream catalytic conversion of SOEC products (H2, CO, or syngas) into green fuels and chemicals. To tackle climate change at the pace that our times impose, Topsoe is committing to a goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. To reach such an ambitious goal, a large industrial scale application of the SOEC technology is necessary. Accordingly, Topsoe has announced the construction of a SOEC manufacturing facility in Denmark to produce electrolysis stacks and modules with a capacity of 500 MW per year, planned to be operational in 20251.In this presentation, Topsoe will provide an overview of its initiatives, lines of work and results in the field of SOECs, spanning from the thorough investigation of materials properties and electrode microstructure to the design and realization of a MW-sized electrolyzer plant. An extensive R&D effort is also directed towards increasing the lifetime of Topsoe’s fuel electrode-supported Ni/YSZ based cells, aiming at the development of robust and durable electrodes. The presentation will give examples of the analysis of electrode nano- and micro-structures by advanced characterization techniques, while illustrating the valuable role of impedance spectroscopy for the electrochemical characterization of the state-of-the-art cell performance. Finally, the presentation will also showcase results of stack testing applying Topsoe's stack technology for H2 production, as well as an update and outlook of Topsoe's efforts in upscaling its SOEC capacity. In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy and Soft X-Ray Spectro-Microscopy to Understand Electrochemical Processes

Electrochemical CO2 conversion offers a route to use renewable sources of electricity to convert CO2 into valuable carbon-based fuels and chemicals, including carbon monoxide, ethanol and ethylene. For electrochemical CO2 conversion technologies to become a viable component of future sustainable energy infrastructures, improved performance materials (catalysts, electrodes, membrane electrode assemblies) are needed to achieve high conversion rates, selectivity and single-pass utilization of CO2. This talk will focus on the development of techniques to characterize the properties of electrochemical CO2 conversion materials under reaction conditions. These in-situ methods are producing results which will guide the design of next generation materials and reactors. The talk will focus primarily on in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and related spectroscopic techniques (energy dispersive X-ray analysis and selected area electron diffraction), along with synchrotron-based methods including in-situ soft X-ray scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM).

Nanoscale in-Situ Characterization of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers for Improved Water Management

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) facilitate a sustainable energy infrastructure by offering emission-free electricity generation using renewably sourced hydrogen gas. The electrochemical reactions in a fuel cell occur at platinum-loaded catalyst layers (CLs), which are susceptible to degradation. Obstructing catalyst sites (triple phase boundaries1) with reaction by-products, such as water2,3, is the primary degradation mechanism in PEMFCs. Although various CL designs have been tested for improved electrochemical performance, in situ nanoscale visualization of platinum degradation and water accumulation in the CL at controlled temperature and relative humidity (RH) values are required to understand fundamental water mechanics through platinum and carbon nanostructures.In this work, we employed scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XANES) to evaluate the effect of temperature on pristine and broken-in fuel cell CLs. We developed a novel CL in-situ sample cell to enable nanostructured characterization of catalyst layers using STXM in a controlled temperature environment. Carbon 1s, Fluorine 1s, and Oxygen 1s spectral edges were probed utilizing near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) to reveal chemical degradation mechanisms and differentiate material structure. Through our custom in-situ cell, we demonstrate that the chemical composition and water accumulation throughout the PEMFC CLs at low, intermediate, and high operating temperatures (25°C, 40°C, and 60°C, respectively) can be quantified, along with thermal expansion analyses of the CL and ionomer membrane. Moreover, we reveal realistic structural and chemical characteristics of nanoscale catalysts by distinguishing regions of Nafion® Ionomer, catalyst carbon support, and platinum throughout the PEMFC’s membrane electrode assembly at industrially relevant fuel cell temperatures. The insights from this work will inform strategies to mitigate water flooding from a nanoscale perspective in addition to the novel in-situ spectromicroscopy characterization of current CL features.1. Analisis Potensi Energi Angin sebagai PLTB di Pantai Watu Ulo Jember Menggunakan data BMKG

This research aims to analyze the potential of wind energy as a resource for Wind Turbine Power Plants (PLTB) in the coastal area of Watu Ulo Beach, Jember. The research adopts a literature review method, utilizing data provided by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). BMKG data serves as the primary source for this analysis, providing a robust foundation to evaluate the potential of PLTB. The study also focuses on the availability of state-of-the-art technology to optimize the utilization of wind energy, assessing its suitability for the region's characteristics. The research findings are expected to provide a comprehensive overview of the PLTB potential in Watu Ulo Beach, Jember, serving as a basis for the development of sustainable energy infrastructure in coastal areas. The conclusions drawn from this literature review are anticipated to serve as a reference for further research and the implementation of sustainable PLTB projects in the region.
