EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH TEXTBOOK GRADE-V

The current research adopted qualitative content analysis with the help of NVivo 12 software and a purposive sampling technique to select a Grade 5 English textbook. The main purpose of study was to analyze the document regarding six aspects of sustainability by Tawanti framework. Findings of study revealed that sustainability has been viewed holistically consisting of environmental, social, economic, institutional, cultural and values-based approaches. The study of textbook revealed that most parts of the textbook were seen promoting the environmental awareness, gender equality, social responsibility, financial literacy, national pride, cultural diversity & values. Furthermore, specific lessons and activities were also found in the textbook to offer knowledge and training related to sustainable practices, empathy, ethical decision making & cultural heritage of Pakistan. It was concluded that the textbook of Grade 5 English is aligned with many aspects of the sustainability that give a more inclusive view of sustainable development. The study suggested further emphasis on economic dimension to prepare the students with the knowledge and skills that align with the economic sustainability.

A sustainable approach for exploiting cross-border nonrenewable resources using hybrid Game Theory and Ordinal Priority Approach

Throughout history, cross-border resources have been a major cause of conflicts and tensions among countries. Typically, involved countries put all their capacities into exploiting nonrenewable resources as much as possible to gain maximum economic benefits, compared to their neighbors. Such attitude will affect the future of Earth and human life in the shared-border areas in the mid and long term. The Game Theory, despite its broad applications and popularity, cannot dissuade free-riders from their self-centered strategies toward shared nonrenewable resources due to the higher payoff. Moreover, Game Theory cannot encourage countries to employ sustainable approaches and propel them toward renewable resources. In this global-scale case, the intermediation of objective and powerful “International Organizations” is highly needed to supervise competitive games between countries and promote sustainability in players' strategies and behaviors. This study proposes a “hybrid Game Theory and Ordinal Priority Approach” as a new solution for exploiting cross-border nonrenewable resources with the view of sustainable development. The proposed framework enables international organizations to enforce the “sustainability criteria for protecting natural resources and shifting to renewables” and control “Countries’ strategies in extracting shared nonrenewable resources.” Consequently, neighbouring countries see their desired pay-offs in sustainable strategies that regenerate the environment, decarbonize the economy, and protect societies and local communities. This study continues with an illustrative case study to discuss the applicability of hybrid Game-OPA in real world under complete and incomplete datasets. Ultimately, the performance and reliability of the hybrid Game-OPA model have been checked through a sensitivity analysis, which showed how small changes in inputs could impact final decisions.

Logistics Efficiency Evaluation and Empirical Research under the New Retailing Model: The Way toward Sustainable Development

As an innovative retailing mode, “new retailing” is making the distinction between physical and virtual commerce obsolete, where offline stores attract customers and supply them with the opportunity of experiences, and online stores provide services for placing orders and transactions. However, many new retailing companies are beset by their logistics efficiency evaluations because evaluation indicators and methods differ significantly from those with traditional business patterns. In this way, considering the sustainable development principle, this study focuses on the approach of logistics efficiency evaluation and empirical analysis under the new retailing model, explores the main factors related to logistics efficiency improvement, and proposes corresponding measures to reinforce the core competence of companies. We first establish a novel logistics efficiency evaluation index system by word frequency and correlation analysis from a sustainable development view, including six first-level indicators and twenty-seven second-level indicators; then, the logistics efficiency evaluation framework is presented: the static evaluation is made using cross-efficiency DEA and IAHP entropy; the dynamic evaluation is performed using the Malmquist index. After that, a demonstrated analysis of logistics efficiency is conducted with 15 listed companies in China. Furthermore, efficiency-influencing factors are identified using Tobit regression, and countermeasures are proposed to promote the development of new retailing. Comparison results show that the proposed logistics efficiency evaluation framework can be scientific and reliable, helping managers to identify the weaknesses and influencing factors in enterprise logistics operations, therefore improving the performance and competitiveness of new retailing companies.

The essence of accounting under the sustainable development view

About the nature of accounting, different people have different opinions in the academic circle. The classic theories mainly include management activity theory, information system theory, business language theory and so on. With the prosperity of economy and the progress of society, sustainable development has gradually become the goal pursued by enterprises and society. Under the concept of sustainable development, society's expectation on accounting has also changed, and only reflecting economic value can no longer meet the needs of enterprises and society. Enterprises and society expect accounting to provide sustainable value that fully reflects the combined benefits of environment, society and governance. Therefore, under the concept of sustainable development, accounting in essence should be a tool to comprehensively determine the sustainability value of an organization by measuring the input of economic capital, environmental capital and social capital and the value created by each of them in a special way. The understanding of the essence of accounting has also expanded from the traditional economic management system to a larger sustainable system.

Design of a novel TA-MoS2 nanosheets interlayer-based loose nanofiltration membrane for enhanced dye/salt separation

From the view of sustainable development, the loose nanofiltration (LNF) membrane with high permeability and excellent separation of dye/salt mixture becomes more attractive for dye-containing wastewater. However, the previous LNF membranes inevitably suffered from the permeability-selectivity trade-off due to the inherent nature of polymer-based selective layer. This study reported a tannic acid (TA)-MoS2 nanosheets (NSs) interlayered nanocomposite polyester (PE) LNF membrane (iLNF-3) that exhibited a remarkably enhanced water permeance of 55.8 LMH·bar−1 compared to the control LNF membrane of 27.3 LMH·bar−1, and a higher separation selectivity of dye/salt (rejection rate: 99.6 % for congo red, 98.0 % for methyl blue, 5.6 % for Na2SO4, respectively). Furthermore, the iLNF-3 showed high ionic interference resistance, long-term stability, and superior antifouling performance. The enhanced permeance and dye/salt separation were mainly attributed to the introduction of a high-permeability TA-MoS2 NSs interlayer. In particular, the permeability was improved due to the “gutter” effect and nanochannels and the formed thinner PE selective layer caused by TA-MoS2 NSs interlayer. Notably, the selectivity was enhanced owing to the looser porous structure of PE layer resulting from the slow diffusion rate of aqueous monomer. This study can provide a foundational framework for the development of iLNF membranes for treating dye containing wastewater.

Recycle graphite from spent lithium-ion batteries for H2O2 electrosynthesis.

On-site H2O2 synthesis via the two-electron route oxygen reduction reaction for environmental remediation is attractive. This work offers a novel strategy for both spent graphite recovery and H2O2 electrosynthesis catalyst preparation. The graphite is directly recycled from spent lithium-ion batteries to an H2O2 electrosynthesis catalyst. From the view of sustainable development and environmental protection, the H2O2 electrosynthesis catalyst prepared using spent graphite is eco-friendly and cost-efficient. The surface functional groups of the recycled graphite are finely tuned by the HNO3 medium to induce -COOH and C-O-C groups. The activated graphite exhibits high H2O2 activity and selectivity, compared to the raw spent graphite. The activated graphite can achieve an H2O2 Faradic efficiency of about 80%. The activated graphite has a good prospect for T-acid wastewater treatment as the H2O2 generation catalyst. Almost 92% of chemical oxygen demand can be removed.

COMPARISON OF A WATERCOOLER AND OTHER ALTERNATIVES IN TERMS OF THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS USING THE LCA METHOD

The environmental impacts of products are evaluated based on an assessment of the influence of material and energy flows that the evaluated product system exchanges with the environment. The University of Southern Denmark is also dealing with this, and from the point of view of sustainable development, drinking watercoolers are being investigated using the Life Cycle Assessment method. This research conducts a Life Cycle Impact Assessment of drinking water supply systems at a university to determine if they fit the institution's sustainability agenda. In the evaluation, the impact of one beverage delivered from watercoolers is compared with beverages from five benchmarked systems. These systems are tap water, ice-chilled water, bottled water, soft drinks and hot drinks. They are set up in scenarios that are directly used for evaluation and subsequent comparison. This study uses a variant of “Cradle-To-Grave” Life Cycle Assessment, where a full assessment occurs from resource extraction to disposal, while using an attributive approach. The results of the life cycle assessment showed which system has the lowest impact and the results are quantified. Finally, based on the results of the life cycle assessment, the most suitable water chiller system is recommended and the University management is provided with information for further decision making.

Prihvatanje koncepta održivog razvoja - implikacije za univerzitetsku nastavu

Referring to the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (National Strategy for Sustainable Development, 2008) the obligation of all today's generations is to leave enough chances for development to posterity. That is why the task of the modern world is to harmonize its development with the needs of people and nature, all with the aim of preserving the Earth, both for the current generation and for future generations of people to come.The research has an empirical character, which is aimed at determining the attitudes of future pedagogical staff (future educators) on sustainable development. The aim of the author's work is to examine the connection of attitudes towards the goals of sustainable development with the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents, and especially with gender and different regional and national affiliations. A descriptive method was used in the research. The technique of data collection used in the research is the survey technique, and a questionnaire was used as an instrument to assess attitudes about sustainable development. Citizens' awareness of sustainable development, which includes an understanding of the concept of sustainable development, is below the level of awareness of the contents and goals of sustainable development. The obtained findings indicate insufficient recognizability not only of the content of this concept, but also of the construction of the concept of sustainable development. One of the reasons for such a thing lies primarily in the absence of a holistic view of sustainable development. The authors of the research did not confirm the hypothesis that the more pronounced women's values are in culture, the more certain the acceptance of the concept of sustainable development; although they found a partial explanation in the characteristics of the sample itself and the values of the index. By proving that there are regional differences in the value attitudes of the respondents, the authors confirmed the hypothesis that the more pronounced the regional differences, the more pronounced the differences in the value attitudes of the respondents. Podatki środowiskowe w kształtowaniu zrównoważonej produkcji i konsumpcji w krajach Unii Europejskiej

Purpose – The aim of this article is to assess the impact of environmental taxes in terms of sustainable consumption and production. Examination of the correlation between environmental tax revenues in the European Union countries and sustainable consumption and production indicators will allow us to make this assessment. Research method – The study used the method of literature analysis and comparative analysis using structure, dynamics, correlation, median and arithmetic mean indicators. The numerical data for the research were obtained from the Eurostat database. Goal no 12 performance indicators were used as a variable to measure the impact of environmental taxes in each Member State. Results – The results of the correlation analysis conducted clearly indicate that in the case of the indicators: energy productivity, average CO2 emissions of new passenger cars per 1 km, consumption of materials in a closed loop, and the gross value of goods in the sector of environmental goods and services, significant relationships were obtained in a large group of EU countries in the desired directions. The hypothesis has been positively verified. Originality / value / implications / recommendations – It is very important from the point of view of sustainable development, and especially sustainable consumption, to define the role of tax fiscal instruments. As an important instrument of public finance, they should support the implementation of sustainable development goals. As a result of the conducted analyses, an attempt will be made to formulate recommendations in terms of the functioning of tax fiscal instruments for sustainable development.

Influence of Technical Parameters of the Pyrolysis Process on the Surface Area, Porosity, and Hydrophobicity of Biochar from Sunflower Husk Pellet

Biochar is a product that has been of interest to many researchers in recent years. The use and positive effect of biochar depend on its properties, which in turn result primarily from the type of substrate used for production and the technical parameters of the pyrolysis process used. From the point of view of sustainable development, agricultural raw materials, such as sunflower husks, are good materials for biochar synthesis. The research aimed to determine the effect of changing the technical parameters of the pyrolysis process (i.e., temperature, heating rate, and residence time) on the properties of biochar obtained from sunflower husk pellets. The pellets were heated to 480 °C, 530 °C, and 580 °C. The applied heating rate for 480 °C was 4.00 and 7.38 °C·min−1, for 530 °C it was 4.42 and 8.15 °C·min−1 and for 580 °C it was 4.83 and 8.92 °C·min−1. Determining these properties is important due to the use of biochar, e.g., in the processes of sorption of pollutants from the water and soil environment. The technical parameters of the pyrolysis process used allowed us to obtain hydrophilic materials with porosity in the range of 10.11% to 15.43% and a specific surface area of 0.93 m2·g−1 to 2.91 m2·g−1. The hydrophilic nature of biochar makes it possible to use them in the processes of removing inorganic pollutants and polar organic pollutants. The presence of macropores in biochar may contribute to the improvement of water management in the soil and affect the assimilation of microelements by plants. The low content of heavy metals in biochar does not pose a threat to the environment.

Market strategy options to implement Thailand demand response program policy

DR (Demand Response) is an energy management strategy for reducing electricity usage during high-demand and unbalanced problem between demand and supply, which can lead to reduction in power system investment costs and CO2 emission. This technology is especially suitable for the initial state of the power system transformation and demonstrates a good attitude in sustainable development view. DR also has the potential to improve the flexibility of Thailand power system in order to promote the growth of renewable energy (RE). This study analysed a DR business option where LAs (Load Aggregators) are the key actors that collect and managed committed DR resources. Our study proposed the establishment of LA#1, as lead and first level LAs, wherein LA#1 consists of state utilities. For non-utilities interested in the DR business, they will be designated as LA#2, or level two LAs, responsible for DR resources left out by LA#1. The study included an assessment of the DR market size, and analyses of our proposed DR business solution. The SWOT analysis showed that the strengths and opportunities outweighed the weaknesses and threats for a business option where the state utilities are the lead LAs and the ones primary doing the DR business. The BMC assessment provided a comprehensive analysis confirming that our proposed LA business operation, wherein having an LA#1 consisting of state utilities, should be the preferential DR business operation option under the current power market structure. The financial analysis also supported this business option of state utilities being LA#1.

Using Our Superpowers to Meet the Global Challenge: Introducing the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals to Management Students

Sustainable development is a powerful, significant, and occasionally controversial topic in management education. It usually refers to “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The broad view of sustainable development is articulated on the United Nations Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform and consists of 17 wide ranging goals including Zero Hunger, Justice worldwide, and Quality Education. This article offers a hands-on exercise demonstrating how this topic can be introduced to management students. The goal is to generate awareness and critical thinking regarding sustainable development goals.

An urban experiment in small town sustainability in the UK: the case of Cittaslow

Member towns of the international network of slow cities are recent examples of the working out of development approaches that aim to involve local communities in the maintenance of the unique environmental and cultural heritage of individual locations. Formalised as Cittaslow, over the last two decades these towns are having to respond to a range of issues brought on by the increasing pace of life associated with globalisation and, conversely, stagnation due to being by-passed by footloose capital. The charter requirements of Cittaslow offer a means by which third-tier towns may address sustainable development. Having bought into the ideas for action promoted by Cittaslow International, ten towns in the UK have worked towards developing support in the community for a package of complex, connected technical measures. They have done so over a period marked by a shift from government to governance, and in an economic climate characterised by austerity. Evidence from local government officers points to the challenges of maintaining support for a view of sustainable development formulated elsewhere and which many people find hard to grasp. Quality of life and local uniqueness are nonetheless broad goals, around which communities can be anticipated to continue to organise in processes of governance for sustainable development.

Corporate Social Responsibility in Terms of Sustainable Development: Financial Risk Management Implications

The motivation for this study was a new context associated with the increased cyclical nature of the economy and, accordingly, the increased financial risks of the business, which complicated the implementation of corporate social responsibility. The purpose of the article is to explore the relationship of corporate social responsibility with the financial risks of the business and explain this relationship in terms of sustainable development (SDGs). The article contributes to the development of the concept of financial risks of the business by clarifying their connection with corporate social responsibility and substantiating the relationship between the financial risks of the business. Structural equation modeling (SEM) showed that in 2020–2021, financial risks have demonstrated a complex (in most cases negative) relationship with each other and a contradictory impact on corporate social responsibility. The complex systemic relationship between corporate social responsibility and financial risks of business from the point of view of sustainable development is substantiated. In the context of increased financial risks, by systematically implementing SDGs 8, 9, 11, and 12, responsible companies get the opportunity to restore and improve their position in the market. The significance of the findings for businesses is that they proposed the SDGs as a promising new benchmark for business financial risk management. This will allow responsible companies to find a new Pareto optimum in the current conditions of uncertainty and determine for themselves the preferred level of corporate social responsibility that contributes to the effective financial risks of business management in the long term.

This document contains aspects related to regulation issued in Colombia in the past year in regard to environmental protection within the view of sustainable development, international treaties, and international soft law instruments. The following presents laws, decrees, and resolutions issued by the Colombian Congress and by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development that extend from the introduction of new crimes against the environment, such as deforestation and ecocide in the Colombian Criminal Code, to the issuance of guidelines for the development of low-impact and environmentally sustainable agricultural activities in páramos. Similarly, reference is made to decisions of the Constitutional Court regarding the right of communities living close to projects of national interest to participate in said projects and to be considered within project decisions. Many relevant laws were adopted this year. Law 2099 declares green hydrogen, blue hydrogen, and geothermal energy projects as non-conventional renewable energy projects. It establishes tax incentives for electricity generation projects based on non-conventional renewable energy sources such as green hydrogen, blue hydrogen, and geothermal energy. Law 2099 adopts measures for the energy transition and the dynamization of the energy market through the use, development, and promotion of non-conventional energy sources.

Facts, Values and Perspectives on Sustainable Development in Free Teaching Materials in Sweden

In this study, we adopt a critical perspective on knowledge about sustainable development in Swedish free teaching materials, where certain ways of illustrating sustainable development can make invisible alternative ways to understand and delimit it. We analyse physical, free materials for school teaching, distributed by Utbudet. The materials were produced between 2008 and 2019. Our analysis shows that there is a focus on facts, certifications and technical fixes, as well as scientific and societal consensus. The companies’ perspectives are prominent in the free materials, as are anthropocentric and Western approaches. Taken together, our study shows that the free materials convey that the global situation has improved and that development is on the right track, rather than in crisis, or that the sustainability problems are complex and difficult to manage. Thus, the materials present a fairly one-sided picture of the situation and the future, which does not really agree with the aim in Swedish education of presenting a balanced view of sustainable development.

Approaches to integrated disclosure of capital information in the context of sustainable development of agricultural formations

The evaluates of the published non-financial information by joint-stock companies of the agricultural sector of the Krasnodar region economy was performed in the article. The problems of forming reliable, complete, comparable, verifiable non-financial information about the state and changes in all components of capital from the point of view of sustainable development of agricultural formations were revealed. The roadmap has been formed for the regulation of non-financial reporting in the Russian Federation. The concept of optimal integrated disclosure of information on sustainable development has been developed.

НАПРЯМКИ РЕАЛІЗАЦІЇ ДОСЯГНЕННЯ СТАЛОЇ ТУРИСТИЧНОЇ ДІЯЛЬНОСТІ

The article examines the main principles and directions for achieving sustainable tourism. The principles and main mechanisms of tourism policy implementation using world experience, regulatory, economic and social levers of state and international management are indicated. It is noted that the development of sustainable tourism is closely related to the quality of tourist services. In many ways, the quality of services is more important than their quantity, because too large volumes of tourism can easily exceed the limits of the load that a given region can carry, thereby jeopardizing tourism as a whole. The global tourism industry faces an increasing level of competition both between regions of the world and between countries within their regions. A characteristic problem is the disproportion of regional development, both from the point of view of sustainable development of recreation and tourism, and from the point of view of the general level of socio-economic development. Sustainability challenges can be met through the quality that the area can offer tourists and local residents. It is shown that achieving an optimal combination of economic and social interests in tourism is not possible without taking into account the impact on the environment, natural resources and environmental safety. Since the very concept of sustainable development is still in the development stage, and there are still many unsolved problems in the tourism economy, the mechanisms of sustainable development of the tourism sector have also not been fully studied. However, in recent years, some ideas have been proposed, which can mainly be considered as prerequisites for sustainable tourism or as tools to help achieve sustainability in tourism activities. It is shown that currently the main problem in the concept of sustainable development of tourism is the lack of tools for implementing the principles of sustainable development in practice. The existing tools do not yet allow the development of sustainable tourism everywhere and require further scientific research and development. Also important is the difficulty of determining the actual results and activities carried out in the field of sustainable tourism. There are no effective, generally accepted indicators of the sustainable development of tourism, there is no clear system of indicators of sustainable development. Further development of scientific research on this issue is proposed.

Customs handling and sustainable development of enterprises

The aim of the paper is to present the essence of customs handling in the context of sustainable development of enterprises and to discuss its selected instruments of a pro-ecological nature, i.e., e-customs services. Thus, with a view to achieving this objective, the research hypothesis has been formulated as follows: the so-called pro-ecological solutions for handling customs administrative procedures, being familiar with them and their practical application, not only influence the facilitation of export and import transactions, but can also stimulate sustainable development management of enterprises. The article includes a theoretical part, as well as a practical one, in which examples of e-customs services offered in customs handling and benefits resulting from their use are indicated. The findings of the considerations of the paper are presented in the conclusion. The research was based on descriptive and comparative analysis, preceded by a review of sources from the subject literature. In the author’s opinion, transferring selected elements of customs handling from traditional processing to the model which takes advantage of modern information and communication technologies (ICT) helps companies to implement the idea of sustainable development. Information technologies play a key role in reducing the negative impact on the environment, and their development has created numerous new opportunities for customs handling, which are used by customs authorities with increasing success. It is important that over the coming years, the development of e-services for customs handling is continued, thus not only contributing to an improvement of the quality of business services but also the implementation of other aspects that are also crucial from the point of view of sustainable development of enterprises.

RENOVATION OF THE GREEN SPACES OF THE DVORYANSKOE GNEZDO (NOBLE NEST) ENSEMBLE IN YEKATERINBURG

In the article, the authors analyze the Dvoryanskoe Gnezdo residential quarter, located in the Uralmash district of the city Yekaterinburg, and the surrounding area from the point of view of sustainable development. Using the methodology of the Danish architect Jan Gale, the problems of the complex are identified according to twelve criteria and options for their solutions are proposed. The article proposes a conceptual solution for the improvement of the adjacent territory, taking into account accessibility for all population groups. In conclusion, recommendations and proposals are given that are necessary to improve the quality of life on the territory of the residential complex and the importance of preserving the housing stock of the first half of the 20th century.
