Feed Components and Timing to Improve the Feed Conversion Ratio for Sustainable Aquaculture Using Starch.

Aquaculture contributes to the sustainable development of food security, marine resource conservation, and economy. Shifting aquaculture feed from fish meal and oil to terrestrial plant derivatives may result in cost savings. However, many carnivorous fish cannot be sustained on plant-derived materials, necessitating the need for the identification of important factors for farmed fish growth and the identification of whether components derived from terrestrial plants can be used in feed. Herein, we focused on the carnivorous fish leopard coral grouper (P. leopardus) to identify the essential growth factors and clarify their intake timing from feeds. Furthermore, we evaluated the functionality of starch, which are easily produced by terrestrial plants. Results reveal that carbohydrates, which are not considered essential for carnivorous fish, can be introduced as a major part of an artificial diet. The development of artificial feed using starch offers the possibility of increasing the growth of carnivorous fish in aquaculture.

Food Diversification: Strengthening Strategic Efforts to Reduce Social Inequality through Sustainable Food Security Development in Indonesia

<span>Potential</span><span lang="EN-US"> food resources can be utilized through food diversification as a part of the government's efforts to minimize socio-economic inequality with sustainable food security development program. The purpose of this study was to observe the role of food diversification in reducing social inequality through sustainable food security development. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods with secondary data collection techniques which include data references as well as documentation related to food security development. The results showed that in Indonesia, food diversification program has an impact on increasing income, household resilience and welfare with a decrease in the number of the rural poor population of 4.7% (from 16.31 people to 15.54 people). It was positively correlated with the increase in farmers' income by (IDR) 30.37 million per capita increase (4.47%). Then, followed by the level of food security in the district area reached 80.53% (335 regions) and for urban areas amounted to 92.85% (91 regions). National food security can be achieved through maximizing the potential use of food resources at the regional level, by diversifying food based on local wisdom and optimally local resources. It can be concluded that food diversification is a policy that can be used by the government to increase community economic income and reduce poverty and social inequality.</span>

Challenges and Suggestions for Sustainable Development of Food Security in Southwest China

Sustainable development of food security in Southwest China is critical in ensuring national food security, and concerns ecological civilization construction, ethnic unity, and poverty alleviation in China. A green- and ecological-oriented development approach is an important prerequisite for ensuring the sustainable development of food security in this region. In this paper, we first investigated the food production situation in this region, and then analyzed the challenges from the aspects of ecological environment features, agricultural inputs, and agricultural structure. Furthermore, according to the production conditions and resource endowment of Southwest China, we proposed a strategic vision comprising overall thinking, strategic positioning, general goal, and development path, as well as several policy suggestions focusing on policy modification and project implementation, aiming to provide references for the formulation of regional food security strategies.

Modeling of food security and ecological footprint of coastal zone of Bangladesh

This paper presents a computer model of integrated management of coastal zones of Bangladesh. This model predicts that expanding shrimp aquaculture industry ensures high food security at upazila levels with increasing environmental degradation. The model also predicts that if shrimp aquaculture industry continues to boom from the present status to super intensive shrimp aquaculture, a collapse of the shrimp aquaculture industry will ultimately occur turning shrimp aquaculture land neither suitable for shrimp culture nor crop production. The control of growth of the shrimp production intensity stabilizes the system at least in the short run. The control of population and growth of the shrimp production intensity should be considered for stabilization of the system in the long run. The sustainable development of the coastal zone of Bangladesh in the long run without control of both the growth of shrimp production intensity and the population will remain mere dream. It is now high time to design an integrated management system for the coastal zones of Bangladesh for sustainable development. This model can be used to assist the policy planners to assess different policy issues and to design a policy for sustainable development of the coastal zones of Bangladesh. The boost up of coastal agriculture and restriction on rapid growth of shrimp culture and its intensity to reduce ecological footprints are two pathways for sustainable development of food security in the coastal zones of Bangladesh. This study also examines the short-term and long-term policy options for sustainable food security.
