Pricing, assembly rate optimizations and coordination for prefabricated construction supply chain with government subsidies

Prefabricated construction, a sustainable construction method, has become the inevitable trend for the future development of the construction industry. The subsidy policies for prefabricated construction enterprises can influence their strategies to promote the development of prefabricated construction. The paper considers a two-echelon prefabricated construction supply chain consisting of a manufacturer and an assembler, aiming to investigate pricing and the assembly rate strategies and coordination under different subsidy objects. The findings demonstrate that subsidy policies can increase the assembly rate. When the government subsidizes the manufacturer, the wholesale price decreases with the subsidy rate, while subsidizing the assembler, the wholesale price does not change. The impacts of subsidy policies on the retail price depend on price sensitivity and the consumer preference for the prefabricated construction market. When the subsidy rates are equivalent, the profit of supply chain with subsidizing the assembler is greater than that with subsidizing the manufacturer. Finally, the paper proposes the revenue-cost sharing contract to coordinate prefabricated construction supply chain with government subsidies. A numerical study is carried out to verify conclusions, and illustrates that a certain range of subsidy affects positively prefabricated construction enterprises by adjusting the retail price and increasing the assembly rate.

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCTS ON SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY WITH CONVENTIONAL CONCRETE BUILDING METHODS

Renewable-sourced EWPs offer enhanced dimensional stability, durability, and mechanical properties, facilitating larger and more complex structural elements, and contributing to faster construction times and better energy performance. The research investigates the feasibility and effectiveness of Engineered Wood Products (EWPs) as sustainable building materials in the construction sector by a comparison of their cost, performance, and environmental impact against conventional concrete. The research emphasises the importance of innovative design, recycling, and waste reduction in fostering sustainable construction methods that satisfy the demands of present and future generations while conserving energy. However, there are negative environmental impacts linked to the production of concrete, such as habitat destruction, atmospheric emissions, and waste generation. The research adopted a web-based survey to gather quantitative data from construction experts. The Relative Importance Index (RII) was adopted to analyze the respondents' perceptions of the benefits of EWP and concrete negative effects. The results of the research reflect respondents' significant preference for EWPs and are consistent with their outstanding environmental qualities. In conclusion, this paper argues that EWPs possess the potential to effectively revolutionise the construction industry by minimising its carbon footprint and encouraging sustainable construction practices that are required for addressing the expectations of both the present and the future.

Determining the stationary digital twins implementation barriers for sustainable construction projects

PurposePrevious research has demonstrated that Digital Twins (DT) are extensively employed to improve sustainable construction methods. Nonetheless, their uptake in numerous nations is still constrained. This study seeks to identify and examine the digital twin’s implementation barriers in construction building projects to augment operational performance and sustainability.Design/methodology/approachAn iterative two-stage approach was adopted to explore the phenomena under investigation. General DT Implementation Barriers were first identified from extant literature and subsequently explored using primary questionnaire survey data from Hong Kong building industry professionals.FindingsSurvey results illustrated that Lack of methodologies and tools, Difficulty in ensuring a high level of performance in real-time communication, Impossibility of directly measuring all data relevant to the DT, need to share the DT among multiple application systems involving multiple stakeholders and Uncertainties in the quality and reliability of data are the main barriers for adopting digital twins' technology. Moreover, Ginni’s mean difference measure of dispersion showed that the stationary digital twin’s barriers adoption is needed to share the DT among multiple application systems involving multiple stakeholders.Practical implicationsThe study’s findings offer valuable guidance to the construction industry. They help stakeholders adopt digital twins' technology, which, in turn, improves cost efficiency and sustainability. This adoption reduces project expenses and enhances environmental responsibility, providing companies a competitive edge in the industry.Originality/valueThis research rigorously explores barriers to Digital Twin (DT) implementation in the Hong Kong construction industry, employing a systematic approach that includes a comprehensive literature review, Ranking Analysis (RII) and Ginni’s coefficient of mean difference (GM). With a tailored focus on Hong Kong, the study aims to identify, analyze and provide novel insights into DT implementation challenges. Emphasizing practical relevance, the research bridges the gap between academic understanding and real-world application, offering actionable solutions for industry professionals, policymakers and researchers. This multifaceted contribution enhances the feasibility and success of DT implementation in construction projects within the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector.

Assessment of mechanical and durability properties of FA-GGBS based lightweight geopolymer concrete

The relentless consumption of natural aggregates and cement in concrete due to rapid construction has resulted in the exhaustion of natural resources; consequently, it's vital to create environment friendly building materials and implement sustainable construction methods. The development of geopolymer concrete (GPC) is a step towards the utilization of by-products. This study aims to prepare and assess the durability and mechanical characteristics of fly ash (FA) and ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS)-based lightweight geopolymer concrete (LWGC). Utilizing sintered fly ash aggregate (SFA) in GPC is one such approach that can lower the usage of regular cement and natural aggregates. In the present investigation a total of six GPC mixes were prepared with varying alkaline activator to binder (AA/B) ratios of 0.3–0.8. The results shows that the AA/B ratio and the mechanical characteristics of LWGC samples are inversely related. The mechanical properties exhibits maximum strength at the lowest AA/B ratio. The LWGC achieved the highest compressive strength (CS) of 48.9 MPa, modulus of elasticity (EM) of 27.3 GPa, split tensile strength (STS) of 3.9 MPa, and direct shear strength of 5.4 MPa after 28 days of ambient curing. The oven dry density (OD) ranged from 1722–1805 kg/m3, satisfying the various codal provisions to be considered a lightweight concrete (LWC). The durability study indicates that for structural applications, the performance is satisfactory, especially in acidic conditions. SEM and EDS analyses also infer strong mechanical and durability characteristics. The obtained results suggests that LWGC is a possible material for structural concrete applications.

Sustainable geopolymers from polyethylene terephthalate waste and industrial by-products: a comprehensive characterisation and performance predictions

Several researchers have recently worked to create sustainable building materials. One of the fundamental prerequisites for sustainable construction methods and environmental impact assessments is the use of green building materials and manufacturing processes. In this research study, geopolymer bricks were developed using polyethylene terephthalate waste and different industrial by-products (rice husk ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, red mud, construction, and demolition waste) and investigated their performances. The polyethylene terephthalate waste was used as a replacement for sand filler in the geopolymer brick up to 100%. Key findings include a workability decrease of 14.75% and a compressive strength reduction of up to 75% with 100% plastic waste replacement, attributed to increased voids and weak geopolymer matrix interaction. Dry density consistently decreases, and water absorption rises to 13.73% with full sand replacement, indicating a porous structure. Impact resistance improves with plastic waste inclusion, enhancing ductility and thermal conductivity by 57% at full replacement. Microstructural analyses reveal correlations between physical–mechanical properties and changes in porosity, microcracks, and bond strength. Machine learning, especially linear regression, proves effective for strength parameter prediction (up to 100% efficacy, R-square of 0.998). The promising results obtained could offer a substantial environmentally friendly solution to the building and construction industry in line with Circular Economy principles.

Unraveling the Knowledge Roadmap of Building Policy Mixes: A Scientometric Analysis

Improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions from buildings are crucial for achieving sustainable development. To realize these goals, it is essential to adopt a policy mix. However, despite much effort in this field, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding on building policy mixes (BPMs), which challenges building sustainability. To address this research gap, this study attempted to uncover the knowledge landscape of BPM through scientometric analysis. By employing methods such as keywords co-occurrence analysis, clustering analysis, co-citation analysis, and research trend analysis, this study systematically examined the current status, hot topics, underlying knowledge framework, knowledge domains, and frontiers of BPM research. The findings revealed that the existing BPM research primarily focuses on various aspects, including policy-related topics such as building energy efficiency policies and policy instruments, as well as topics like green affordable housing, hindering factors, carbon pricing, use obligation, construction waste reduction, and sustainable construction methods. Furthermore, the analysis identified research frontiers in BPM, encompassing policy considerations (e.g., building efficiency policy, split incentive, carbon tax, and carbon pricing), energy-related aspects (e.g., consumption, green transition), political dimensions (e.g., governance, management), building-related factors (e.g., green building, retrofitting), the innovation system, and the evolutionary game. Based on these findings, this study suggests that future research in BPM can deepen insight into interdisciplinary policy mixes by focusing on policy strategies, processes, and features. This study contributes to a holistic understanding of BPM and offers insightful guidance for both researchers and practitioners seeking to advance sustainable practices in the building sector.

Sustainability principles in infrastructure project delivery: establishing the broader implementation strategies for decision-making

Purpose The purpose of this study is to get a clearer knowledge of the reasons for, approaches to and challenges associated with integrating sustainable development concerns into pipeline construction projects in New Zealand. To achieve this, this study delves deeply into sustainable construction to understand the reasons behind and incorporate sustainable development trials into their newly established product management and development procedure. As a result, this study looks at identifying key elements of sustainable construction practices and various interpretations of sustainability in the construction industry; offering a strategy for incorporating sustainable construction practices into the pipeline construction project in New Zealand; and benefits and difficulties that the construction industry encounters when implementing sustainable construction. Finally, a framework is developed to help in understanding the issues and potential solutions for integrating sustainable building methods into the pipeline construction project in New Zealand. Design/methodology/approach This study followed a four-step method (Figure 1), beginning with the identification of the data, continuing with the first screening of the data, determining eligibility and, finally, including the data. This data collection is being done to provide knowledge and direction for further research. Data were collected from various websites on the Web of Science and from Scopus databases. Additionally, data were gathered with the assistance of aggregator databases such as Scopus (scopus.com) and publishing databases such as Elsevier (sciencedirect.com), Inderscience, Taylor and Francis (tandfonline.com), Emerald Insight (emeraldinsight.com) and Google Scholar. These databases have been considered by a number of scholars to be reputable databases. Findings This research provided a thorough description of the key justifications for sustainable construction. This study demonstrated how the idea worked in practice by reviewing the literature on the relevance and analysis of sustainability in construction. This body of research identified crucial components of sustainable construction techniques and varied interpretations of sustainability in the construction industry. To better grasp the current application considerations in the construction sector, it also offered literature on sustainable construction methods. To determine the most effective strategy to make certain adjustments to the current construction processes, the literature also includes a wide range of sustainability-related topics in both developed and developing country contexts. This study also demonstrated the many perspectives and strategies for sustainable behaviors. Because the purpose of this study was to develop a strategy for implementing sustainable construction in New Zealand, it was of the utmost importance to shed light on the most well-known and prominent sustainable construction applications from across the world. The output of this aim provided the literature on construction practices to acquire insight into the ongoing conversations on sustainable practices and systems in the construction industry. This was done to obtain insight into the existing talks. Originality/value This research's contribution to the body of knowledge is demonstrated by the fact that this study has led to a better understanding of sustainable construction practices in the construction industry as well as the identification of the most significant challenges that businesses, organizations, educators and policymakers must face to improve their ability to put these strategies into practice. This research has provided a solid foundation for future research that aims to advance knowledge in this field by providing options for future research to evaluate the influence that the approach has had on enhancing the implementation of sustainable construction. Additionally, this study presents options for future research to evaluate the influence the approach has had on improving the implementation of sustainable construction. The successful completion of the research aim in the more traditional forms of higher education in the built environment can contribute to a better representation of new trends in the practice area associated with expanding and improving the construction industry sustainably.

Adaptive reuse is one of the popular solutions for conserving an old building by programming a new use from the original. This approach is commonly applied and seen in historical buildings or aging building that portrays their significant heritage characters. Large-sized and complex buildings such as shopping centers are no exception to the decline in use, especially when the existence of new modern shopping complexes built surrounding it, making the existing aging complexes become dead and eventually left abandoned. This study is to identify the method and strategy of the adaptive reuse approach of old complex buildings such as shopping center buildings or big-box buildings that are dying, and the focus of the study is on the Klang Valley area which has an abundance of the types of this building. UTC Pudu Sentral was used as a case study where an in-depth investigation was conducted on it through an interview session with the management of the building. Several interventions of the adaptation approach for complex buildings have been identified, and the selection of these repurpose methods is based on aspects of sustainability such as consideration of resources, the economy, and energy use. The result of this survey provides a preliminary overview of the reuse opportunities for the dying complex buildings and prioritizes this method as one of the more sustainable construction methods for the future which simultaneously reduces the number of abandoned buildings due to the overwhelming of modern shopping centers around the Klang Valley.

Gas Pipeline Response to Underlying Straight-Wall Arch Tunnel Construction

Straight-wall arch cross-sections are usually designed at the entrance and exit tunnels of subway stations, and dense underground pipelines often cross these cross-sections at close range. Among these pipelines, gas pipelines have the highest risk level. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the deformation influence of underground crossing construction on existing gas pipelines. Based on the No. 2 entrance and exit tunnel project of Zhongshan Road Station of the Hohhot Metro Line 2, using the methods of numerical simulation and field monitoring, this paper has particularly investigated the influence of straight-wall arch tunnel construction by applying the pre-grouting reinforcement and double-side drift method to the deformation of existing gas pipelines. The research results show that the double-side drift method is an efficient and sustainable construction method for straight-wall arch tunnels, which can effectively reduce the crossing construction disturbance to overlying gas pipelines. The measured maximum settlement of the existing gas pipeline is 18.46 mm, and the maximum settlement of the new tunnel vault is 22.86 mm, with both values satisfying the requirements for deformation control. The simulation results are consistent with the measured results of gas pipeline settlement. This study shows that the safety control scheme employed in the field with a tunnel excavation step of 6 m, stratum reinforcement with upper semi-section grouting, and a grouting reinforcement range of 2.0 m is reasonable and effective. This scheme can provide a reference for the deformation control of similar underground gas pipelines in the crossing construction of straight-wall arch tunnels at close range.

EVALUATION OF ENERGY-COST-EFFICIENT DESIGN ALTERNATIVES FOR RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IN KARNATAKA’S TROPICAL WET AND DRY CLIMATIC ZONES

Introduction: The existing building construction techniques in India account for increased operating energy consumption. Due to this, there is a need to apply sustainable construction methods by including passive design techniques. In accordance with the local climatic condition, a good passive design not only maintains a comfortable environment in the house, but also consumes less energy all the while performing the same basic functions as the traditional structures. Purpose of the study: The present research focuses on residential villas by analyzing parameters such as illuminance, energy, and cost consumption using Revit (Insight 360) software with two different cases. Methods: Considering Case1 as an existing villa of conventional design and Case2 presenting a proposed villa, a remodeling of the existing villa with an increased window wall ratio (WWR), different fenestration designs, and a new building plan. The authors followed the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) guidelines relating to illuminance and generated an analytical energy model using Insight 360 to compare the energy consumption and cost efficiency of the cases. Results: The effectiveness of various fenestration types related to direct heat gain, window orientation that would provide more natural light, total operating energy consumption and costs of two different cases of villas are investigated in this paper.

Automated generation of stacking plans for prefabricated panels transported by A-frame trailers

Prefabrication is a sustainable construction method that improves productivity and reduces environmental footprints. Prefabricated panel is one typical type of components widely used in practice. When designing panel stacking plans for transportation, practitioners should consider numerous practical factors, e.g., panel stability and reshufflings. However, in current practice, stacking plans are made on the basis of planners’ intuition and experience. A scientific method that can yield satisfactory panel stacking plans is thus required. Motivated by this real need, this paper aims to address a practical problem for practitioners: how to stack prefabricated panels transported by A-frame trailers with high stability and little reshuffling. This paper extends the literature by innovatively formulating a bi-objective mixed-integer programming model that incorporates all the aforementioned factors and objectives. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm is designed to approximate the Pareto optimal solutions. We conduct extensive numerical experiments to validate the effectiveness, efficiency, and applicability of our proposed model and algorithm. The developed model and algorithm are capable of automatically performing calculations and effectively generating vertical stacking plans of high quality for planners in real-world settings within seconds. Future research may be devoted to the optimization of stacking plans for other types of prefabricated components or the horizontal stacking plans for components transported by flat-bed trailers.

Prediction of concrete’s compressive strength using machine learning algorithms

The study focuses on predicting the behavior of Lightweight Aggregate Geopolymer Concrete (LWAGC) using machine learning approaches. The performance measures Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) were used to assess many machine learning models. The XGBoost algorithm outperformed other models, with the lowest MSE of 17.34 and the lowest MAE of 2.87. With an MSE of 34.02 and an MAE of 4.46, the LSTM-ANN Hybrid model likewise fared well. The LSTM-CNN Hybrid model, on the other hand, had a higher MSE of 293.92 and a MAE of 13.82, showing space for improvement. When compared to the top-performing algorithms, linear regression, ANN, and CNN models had greater MSE and MAE. These findings emphasize the accuracy with which machine learning approaches, notably XGBoost and LSTM-ANN Hybrid, anticipate LWAGC behavior. Precise prediction allows for the construction of lightweight concrete buildings, which have advantages such as lower density, higher fire resistance, and a lower carbon footprint. This study adds to the body of knowledge on LWAGC by proving the efficiency of machine learning in predicting the behavior of lightweight concrete. The findings may be used to improve the design of lightweight concrete buildings, encouraging sustainable and resilient construction methods in civil engineering. The training and testing data used in this study were divided into a 70% training set and a 30% testing set.

The Industrialisation of Sustainable Construction: A Transdisciplinary Approach to the Large-Scale Introduction of Compacted Mineral Mixtures (CMMs) into Building Construction

Increasing demand for sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon construction materials has highlighted the potential of Compacted Mineral Mixtures (CMMs), which are formulated from various soil types (sand, silt, clay) and recycled mineral waste. This paper presents a comprehensive inter- and transdisciplinary research concept that aims to industrialise and scale up the adoption of CMM-based construction materials and methods, thereby accelerating the construction industry’s systemic transition towards carbon neutrality. By drawing upon the latest advances in soil mechanics, rheology, and automation, we propose the development of a robust material properties database to inform the design and application of CMM-based materials, taking into account their complex, time-dependent behaviour. Advanced soil mechanical tests would be utilised to ensure optimal performance under various loading and ageing conditions. This research has also recognised the importance of context-specific strategies for CMM adoption. We have explored the implications and limitations of implementing the proposed framework in developing countries, particularly where resources may be constrained. We aim to shed light on socio-economic and regulatory aspects that could influence the adoption of these sustainable construction methods. The proposed concept explores how the automated production of CMM-based wall elements can become a fast, competitive, emission-free, and recyclable alternative to traditional masonry and concrete construction techniques. We advocate for the integration of open-source digital platform technologies to enhance data accessibility, processing, and knowledge acquisition; to boost confidence in CMM-based technologies; and to catalyse their widespread adoption. We believe that the transformative potential of this research necessitates a blend of basic and applied investigation using a comprehensive, holistic, and transfer-oriented methodology. Thus, this paper serves to highlight the viability and multiple benefits of CMMs in construction, emphasising their pivotal role in advancing sustainable development and resilience in the built environment.

Evolution and Current State of Building Materials, Construction Methods, and Building Regulations in the U.K.: Implications for Sustainable Building Practices

This study presents a comprehensive review of building materials, construction methods, and building regulations on the U.K. mainland. This provides valuable insights into the historical progression and transformation of the construction industry through a comprehensive analysis of both traditional and modern building construction materials and methods and categorising their evolutionary trajectory. Current building regulations in England, Wales, and Scotland are compared, highlighting differences in fire safety, noise safety, energy conservation, and sustainability. For example, fire safety regulations are analysed in detail, including fire resistance duration, wall cladding combustibility, and limitations on unprotected areas. Advances in knowledge and technology have led to increasingly sophisticated and energy-dependent methods, materials, and regulations. This study showcases the vast array of building construction materials spanning centuries, each possessing unique properties and performances. The selected methods and materials represent those currently employed or widely utilised in the U.K. construction industry, affirming their relevance and applicability in modern construction practices. Limitations in construction practices primarily stem from a lack of knowledge and tools rather than material scarcity. Enhancing knowledge and access to advanced tools is crucial to overcoming these limitations and driving advancements in the field. This study provides insights into the evolution of building materials, construction methods, and building regulations that can inform future developments in sustainable building practices. The findings have significant implications for policymakers, building designers, and constructors, particularly in terms of adopting sustainable materials and construction methods that comply with building regulations while reducing the environmental impact of the built environment.

Sustainable construction strategies for building construction projects in the Kingdom of Bahrain: a model

Sustainability is defined as meeting the demands of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This study focuses on the sustainable construction strategies used in the Kingdom of Bahrain in terms of sustainable construction technologies and management strategy linked to the environment and the significant relationship between the management strategy and construction technologies used for sustainable building construction. This study employed the descriptive-correlational method of research using a questionnaire for gathering data about the sustainable construction strategies used in Bahrain. The data gathered were analyzed using the weighted mean and Pearson’s correlation coefficient to determine the degree of correlation between construction technologies and management strategy. SPSS software was used in the calculation. Results show that management strategy linked to the environment is often practiced in around 75% of all projects delivered while general sustainable construction methods, energy and material-based techniques, and waste-based techniques are sometimes utilized in around 50% of all the building projects delivered. In addition, the utilization of these sustainable construction technologies is the result of a management strategy linked to the environment which the respondents rated as often practiced for all projects that were delivered. This implies that management strategy in protecting the environment in Bahrain is often practiced in construction for 75% of the projects. From the results of the study, a model of sustainable building construction in the Kingdom of Bahrain was derived to achieve sustainable building construction. This includes the management strategies needed by the different stakeholders like construction firms and government agencies to carry out the implementation of sustainable construction and sustainable construction techniques (e.g., waste management, insulating materials, building envelope with thermal properties, building management system, and efficient fixtures).

Compression and Bond Properties of Fired Clay Brick Masonry with Cocopeat Blended Binding Mortar

The production of agricultural, industrial, and demolition trash increases along with global population growth and industrial expansion. They endanger the environment when they are not properly recycled, repurposed, or disposed of. Cocopeat is one such agricultural waste. The use of cocopeat in binder cement is urged to support sustainable construction methods. Because it is seen as trash and discarded in landfills. Cocopeat is an environmentally friendly by-product which can be got during the coconut fibre extraction process. The current study investigates the strength properties of masonry built with binding mortar that incorporates cocopeat as opposed to traditional cement-sand mortar. The mortar prepared with four different integrations of cocopeat as sand replacement of 0, 4, 6 and 8% by weight was used for masonry. Fresh properties of cocopeat binding mortar and their effect on the mechanical characteristics of masonry were investigated. The test results revealed that the mechanical characteristics of masonry were enhanced with increased cocopeat content in the mortar.

The Application of Finite Element Simulation and 3D Printing in Structural Design within Construction Industry 4.0

Three-dimensional (3D) printing, or additive manufacturing (AM), is a production can be utilised to fabricate 3D shapes from a simulated file. This technology has gained global popularity in the construction industry since 2014 due to its wide range of applications. AM promotes a more automated, innovative, flexible, and sustainable construction method, making it an integral part of the Construction Industry 4.0. However, there need to be more detailed studies regarding the effectiveness of AM as the future direction in the construction industry. This paper investigates the application of the finite element method (FEM) in assessing 3D-printed structures to get insight into the performance of these structures. Three leading 3D-printed structures were selected, including Dubai Future Foundation in the United Arab Emirates, Apis Cor house in Russia and PERI house in Germany. Structural and thermal analyses, including linear static, natural frequency, spectral response, and steady state heat, were performed using Strand7 to assess the effectiveness of AM in construction and the reliability of FEM in analysing 3D-printed structures. Although there are limited standards and regulations for 3D-printed structures in most countries, it was concluded that 3D-printed structures presented a similar strength to traditional ones. Moreover, FEM can be used to provide a reasonable analysis of the performance of these structures, while complying with the relevant standards. This paper presents a novel numerical procedure to assess the performance of small-scale 3D-printed structures under various mechanical and thermal loadings by checking against the relevant standards.

Exploring the performance of steel fiber reinforced lightweight concrete: A case study review

This review paper aims to investigate the prior research on incorporating steel fibres into lightweight concrete (SF-LWC) to produce sustainable and environmentally friendly concrete. The objectives of the study are to analyse the chemical composition and physical characteristics of SF-LWC and examine its hardened properties such as compressive and flexural strengths. The research also focuses on the impact of steel fibres on the longevity of lightweight concrete and explores various properties such as the failure mode, stress-strain behaviour, ductility, and modulus of elasticity. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to evaluate the prior studies on the use of steel fibres in LWC. The findings of the previous studies were analysed and compared to determine the physical and durability properties of SF-LWC. The results of the literature review showed that steel fibres have a length range of 30–36 mm and a diameter range of 0.5–0.92 mm, with a smooth surface and high tensile strength of 1100–3000 MPa. The addition of steel fibres to LWC was found to improve compressive and flexural strengths and increase ductility. The review also highlights the impact of steel fibres on the durability and longevity of the concrete. The original contribution of this research lies in its comprehensive analysis of previous studies that have used steel fibres as a partial replacement for cement in lightweight concrete. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the properties and performance of sustainable SF-LWC and offer suggestions for future research. By presenting a critical evaluation of prior research, this study advances the field and lays a solid foundation for further investigation. This paper offers recommendations for future studies and provides valuable insights into the properties and performance of SF-LWC, contributing to the advancement of sustainable and energy-efficient construction methods.

A Review on Fresh, Hardened, and Microstructural Properties of Fibre-Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete

Alternative eco-friendly and sustainable construction methods are being developed to address growing infrastructure demands, which is a promising field of study. The development of substitute concrete binders is required to alleviate the environmental consequences of Portland cement. Geopolymers are very promising low-carbon, cement-free composite materials with superior mechanical and serviceability properties, compared to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) based construction materials. These quasi-brittle inorganic composites, which employ an "alkali activating solution" as a binder agent and industrial waste with greater alumina and silica content as its base material, can have their ductility enhanced by utilising the proper reinforcing elements, ideally "fibres". By analysing prior investigations, this paper explains and shows that Fibre Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete (FRGPC) possesses excellent thermal stability, low weight, and decreased shrinking properties. Thus, it is strongly predicted that fibre-reinforced geopolymers will innovate quickly. This research also discusses the history of FRGPC and its fresh and hardened properties. Lightweight Geopolymer Concrete (GPC) absorption of moisture content and thermomechanical properties formed from Fly ash (FA), Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), and Sodium Silicate (Na2SiO3) solutions, as well as fibres, are evaluated experimentally and discussed. Additionally, extending fibre measures become advantageous by enhancing the instance's long-term shrinking performance. Compared to non-fibrous composites, adding more fibre to the composite often strengthens its mechanical properties. The outcome of this review study demonstrates the mechanical features of FRGPC, including density, compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength, as well as its microstructural properties.
