Impact of insulation on energy consumption and CO2 emissions in high-rise commercial buildings at various climate zones

Abstract This study investigates the impact of insulation on energy consumption and CO2 emissions in high-rise commercial buildings across various climate zones. Through a simulation-based approach using the Hourly Analysis Program (HAP), the effectiveness of insulation in reducing energy demand and carbon emissions are evaluated. The research includes multiple climatic regions of Afghanistan, including arid, semi-arid, and mountainous zones. Methodologically, detailed building characteristics, climatic data, and insulation materials are considered, with energy modeling techniques applied to assess the performance of insulation measures. Results indicate varying degrees of energy savings and CO2 emissions reduction associated with insulation across different climate zones, in cities such as Kabul, Herat, Mazar, and Kandahar. Furthermore, the study calculates CO2 emissions reduction resulting from insulation addition, emphasizing the importance of sustainable building practices in mitigating environmental impacts. By underscoring the scientific value of this research in addressing a pressing global challenge and providing actionable insights for building design and energy policy, this study contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the field of sustainable construction and environmental engineering.

Advancements and perspectives in engineered cementitious composites (ECC): a comprehensive review

Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) have garnered significant attention within the construction industry due to their exceptional mechanical properties and durability. This thorough review presents a meticulous analysis of the progress and prospects in ECC research. It commences by introducing the background and rationale for investigating ECC, while outlining the objectives of the review. The review provides an encompassing overview of ECC, encompassing its definition, characteristics, historical development, composition, and constituent materials. Emphasis is placed on the examination of ECC‘s mechanical properties, specifically its flexural behaviour, tensile behaviour, compressive strength, and resistance to environmental factors. Furthermore, the rheological properties of ECC, including workability, flowability, self-healing, crack mitigation, viscosity, and thixotropy, are discussed in detail. The review delves into the influence of fibre reinforcement on ECC, encompassing the types of fibres utilised, their impact on mechanical and structural properties, as well as fibre dispersion and orientation. Additionally, it explores the diverse applications of ECC across various fields, such as structural applications and sustainable building practices. The challenges and limitations associated with ECC, such as cost and availability, are addressed, alongside an exploration of future trends and research directions.

Study of quasi-static tensile and compressive behaviors of laminated bamboo under service temperature

Laminated bamboo presents significant potential for applications in the construction industry. The stress-strain relationship and failure mechanism of laminated bamboo across the service temperature range, spanning from low to high temperatures, remain incompletely elucidated. Addressing this research gap, this paper conducts experiments on tension and compression of laminated bamboo in both parallel to grain direction and perpendicular to grain direction across an extensive temperature range of −40 to 80 °C. Temperature reduction factors according to Eurocode 5 are established, followed by adjustments based on RO constitutive model. Subsequently, a two-section constitutive model for laminated bamboo materials under service temperature is developed. This model is designed to accurately describe the stress-strain relationship of laminated bamboo in various temperature environments. The constitutive model proposed in this paper adeptly predicts the strain hardening behavior of laminated bamboo during compression, demonstrating high accuracy post-yield stress and addressing the non-convergence issue prevalent in most existing models. Additionally, the influence of temperature on fracture mechanism was explored using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The study delves deeply into the fundamental reasons behind temperature's effect on the mechanical properties of laminated bamboo, examining it from a chemical composition standpoint. This study not only offers significant insights for the application of laminated bamboo in construction projects but also serves as a valuable resource for advancing the understanding of laminated bamboo's mechanical behavior under various temperature conditions. The findings are crucial for architects, engineers, and material scientists, guiding them in optimizing the use of laminated bamboo in sustainable building practices and enhancing the structural integrity of bamboo-based construction.

Effect of titanium dioxide as nanomaterials on mechanical and durability properties of rubberised concrete by applying RSM modelling and optimizations

The use of rubber aggregates derived from discarded rubber tyres in concrete is a pioneering approach to replacing natural aggregate (NA) and promoting sustainable building practices. Recycled aggregate in concrete serves the dual purpose of alleviating the accumulation of discarded rubber tyres on the planet and providing a more sustainable alternative to decreasing natural aggregate. Due to fact that the crumb rubber (CR) decreases the strength when used in concrete, incorporating titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a nanomaterial to counteract the decrease in strength of crumb rubber concrete is a potential solution. Response Surface Methodology was developed to generate sixteen RUNs which contains different mix design by providing two input parameters like TiO2 at 1%, 1.5%, and 2% by cement weight and CR at 10%, 20%, and 30% as substitutions for volume of sand. These mixtures underwent testing for 28 days to evaluate their mechanical, deformation, and durability properties. Moreover, the compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength and elastic modulus were recorded by 51.40 MPa, 4.47 MPa, 5.91 MPa, and 40.15 GPa when 1.5% TiO2 and 10% CR were added in rubberised concrete after 28 days respectively. Furthermore, the incorporation of TiO2 led to reduced drying shrinkage and sorptivity in rubberized concrete, especially with increased TiO2 content. The study highlights that TiO2 inclusion refines pore size and densifies the interface between cement matrix and aggregate in hardened rubberized concrete. This transformative effect results in rubberized concrete demonstrating a commendable compressive strength comparable to normal concrete.

Influential factors on the energy efficiency of fresh air systems in nearly zero energy buildings

Ensuring precise control of fresh air volume is crucial for minimizing energy usage in nearly zero energy buildings. Research shows that automatic pressure-independent dampers offer a promising solution for maintaining the desired fresh air volume. However, the energy performance of damper-controlled fresh air systems is influenced by multiple factors that have not been thoroughly investigated. This study focuses on examining the impact of influencing factors on the energy efficiency of fresh air systems. Laboratory experiments and field testing were conducted on a typical fresh air system. Subsequently, based on the experimental data, an energy saving model of the damper-controlled fresh air system was developed and validated. The main influencing factors were comprehensively investigated according to the energy-saving model. Results show that damper resistance is one of the main influencing factors on energy efficiency. Pressure-independent damper with a low resistance ratio of less than 48 % are recommended; When the average PM2.5 concentration increases by 1 µg/m3, the energy saving rate decreases by approximately 0.3 %, indicating that pressure-independent dampers are more suitable for use in regions with cleaner air; In the heating season, the energy saving rate increases by approximately 0.075 % when the dry bulb temperature decreases by 1 °C; In the cooling season, the energy saving rate increases by 1.19 % when the wet bulb temperature rises by 1 °C. This study contributes to the development of sustainable building practices by identifying key factors that influencing the energy usage of damper-controlled fresh air systems and further guiding the selection and utilization of pressure-independent dampers in nearly zero energy buildings.

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF AI INTEGRATION ON ADVANCING CIRCULAR PRACTICES IN CONSTRUCTION

This study provides a thorough examination of the potential and problems associated with integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the circular economy (CE) framework within Sri Lanka’s construction industry. The study uses approach that combines primary data obtained through a questionnaire survey involving several stakeholders with secondary data analysis from academic sources. The data were interpreted using descriptive and statistical analysis, such as Kendall’s Tau correlation and Pearson’s correlation. There is an optimistic view about AI’s potential advantages, including resource and energy conservation, even if the technology is still in its early integration phases. Nevertheless, there are still significant barriers to adoption, such as a lack of knowledge and reluctance to change. The study offers a conceptual framework for combining AI with CE principles, including IoT, computer vision, and machine learning technologies to enhance the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) CE principles. This framework supports cooperative efforts, skill development, and policy development to support sustainable building practices in Sri Lanka.

IDENTIFYING CHALLENGES AFFECTING SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

The challenges posed by rapid population growth and urbanization, coupled with advancements in technology and industry, have led to increased energy consumption, posing potential threats to the future well-being of all living organisms. In the contemporary discourse on sustainability, the efficient utilization of limited resources, including energy, water, and materials, has become pivotal in the construction sector. Developed nations have responded to these concerns by incorporating various regulations into their legal frameworks to promote sustainable construction projects. Consequently, adopting innovative practices in construction processes is essential for designing and implementing sustainable projects. Meeting these demands necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the challenges inherent in the sustainable construction process. Therefore, this study identifies and ranks the obstacles encountered in the Turkish construction industry concerning sustainable construction. Employing a “Systematic Literature Review,” 49 challenges were identified. A survey was organized using these challenges and conducted among architects, civil engineers, and construction contractors, and 209 participants fully completed the questionnaire. Quantitative methods were used to analyze the collected survey data. The study's results reveal that all identified criteria significantly and moderately influence the sustainable construction process within the Turkish construction industry. Furthermore, the research underscores that the most critical impediments are linked to the transition process toward adopting sustainable building practices.

Supporting zero-waste building: A novel spatial explicit material flow analysis model for construction waste

The accurate quantification of construction waste (CW) is prerequisite for achieving zero-waste in the building sector. This study employs a Spatial Material Flow Analysis model considering building life cycle to estimate the spatio-temporal dynamics of CW in Nanjing, China, over two decades. Additionally, it employs an ARIMA model for forecasting CW generation over the forthcoming decade. During 2000 to 2020, Nanjing's CW witnessed a CW increase from 0.8 to 59.0 Tg, predominantly comprising non-metallic materials. Meanwhile, the spatial distribution of CW has widened, accompanied by the emergence of numerous CW hotspots, in parallel with economic and population growth. Future projections suggest a continuous yet decelerating increase in CW generation, highlighting a significant opportunity for resource recovery. The application of this hybrid approach not only enhances CW management accuracy but also supports the broader goal of fostering sustainable building practices. This research expects to enlighten the stakeholders committed to advancing sustainable construction and waste management strategies in the context of zero-waste buildings.

Utilization of waste foam concrete with MPCM as a substitution material for cement in mortars

Given the rising popularity of foam concrete (FC) for both structural and insulating purposes, evaluating the feasibility of recycling after its lifespan is crucial in the context of the growing emphasis on sustainable building practices. One approach to recycling FC incorporating microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) involves utilizing recycled foam concrete powder (RFCP) as an additive in cement composites. This article aims to investigate the impact of RFCP without and with MPCM when employed as a partial replacement for cement in mortars. Furthermore, the study verifies various processing methods such as crushing, grinding, and heat treatment for RFCP. The results reveal that introducing RFCP, regardless of the MPCM presence and processing method, significantly affects the properties of both cement and mortar. The presence of MPCM in RFCP negatively influences the flowability of fresh mortars, delays the setting time, and reduces the hydration heat within the first 48 h. However, the presence of MPCM does not significantly affect mortars' strength and water absorption but simultaneously it increases shrinkage and decreases thermal conductivity. Grinding RFCP mitigates the adverse effects of MPCM, while thermal processing removes MPCM from RFCP, albeit with an associated increase in water demand. A noteworthy finding is that mortars having 20 % RFCP, with or without MPCM, exhibit compressive strengths exceeding 16 MPa and 42.5 MPa after 2 and 28 days, respectively. These results meet the requirements outlined in EN-196-1 for cement of class 42.5, highlighting the potential to produce CEM II/A-F 42.5 using RFCP with MPCM.

Evaluation of the Carbon Footprint of Wooden Glamping Structures by Life Cycle Assessment

Despite the increasing popularity of glamping structures, empirical studies often overlook the carbon impact of wood in these constructions, creating a significant research gap. Understanding the net carbon effect of wood in glamping structures is crucial for informing sustainable building practices. This paper aims to quantitatively compare the net carbon impact of wood in glamping structures, filling a notable gap in the current research literature. The investigation undertakes a thorough evaluation employing a life cycle methodology, appraising the emissions linked with the complete glamping life span. Seven Romanian companies are examined vertically within the glamping production chain and horizontally across the supply value chain. The investigation unveils a notable discovery: the integration of wood within glamping yields considerable carbon sequestration, wherein the wood employed sequesters 36.83 metric tons of CO2 per glamping unit. This surpasses the carbon emissions entailed throughout the entirety of the glamping life cycle, ranging from 9.97 to 11.72 metric tons of carbon. Remarkably, a single wood-incorporated glamping structure has the capacity to sequester approximately 25 metric tons of carbon within a span of 50 years. In summary, the investigation underscores the capacity of responsibly sourced timber to function as a carbon reservoir, proficiently counterbalancing emissions across the entirety of the construction life cycle. The findings underscore the importance of sustainably sourced wood in achieving carbon neutrality and provide valuable insights for promoting sustainable building practices. This methodology has broad applicability beyond glamping structures, holding potential for replication and scalability across various sectors and regions, thereby contributing to global efforts towards mitigating climate change and fostering positive environmental change.

Analysis of Energy-Saving Effect of Green Remodeling in Public Welfare Facilities for Net Zero: The Case of Public Daycare Centers, Public Health Centers, and Public Medical Institutions

In 2021, the South Korean government highlighted the Green Remodeling Project for Public Buildings as a crucial initiative for reducing building emissions and tackling post-COVID challenges. Aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and living conditions in public buildings, especially those used by children and the elderly, this project represents a novel approach to sustainable building practices. This research aimed to evaluate the project’s effectiveness and identify areas for improvement using a two-fold methodological approach. Initially, a survey of 1065 buildings undergoing green remodeling revealed their condition and the impact of such renovations. Additionally, simulations predicted the energy savings to be achievable, uncovering an average improvement of 30% across buildings, with variations by region and building use. Public health centers saw the highest gains. Despite these successes, disparities in outcomes highlighted the need for strategic adjustments to ensure uniform benefits. This study suggests a refined strategy to enhance green remodeling’s impact, making a significant contribution to sustainable building practices by addressing both energy saving for carbon neutrality and public health priorities in a post-pandemic context.

Advancing Sustainable Building Practices: Intelligent Methods for Enhancing Heating and Cooling Energy Efficiency

Our work is dedicated to enhancing sustainability through improved energy efficiency in buildings, with a specific focus on heating and cooling control and the optimization of thermal comfort of occupants. With an energy consumption of more than 60% in buildings, HVAC systems are the biggest energy users. By integrating advanced technology, data algorithms, and digital twins, our study aims to optimize energy performance effectively. We have developed a Neural Network-based Model Predictive Control (NNMPC) to achieve this goal. Leveraging technologies such as MQTT communication, Wi-Fi modules, and field-programmable gate arrays will enhance scalability and flexibility. Our findings demonstrate the efficacy of the NNMPC system deployed on the PYNQ board for reducing sensible thermal energy usage for both cooling and heating purposes. Compared to traditional On/Off control systems, the NNMPC achieved an impressive 40.8% reduction in heating energy consumption and a 37.8% decrease in cooling energy consumption in 2006. In comparison to the On/Off technique, the NNMPC demonstrated a 25.6% reduction in annual heating energy consumption and a 28.8% drop in annual cooling energy consumption in the simulated year of 2017. We observed that, across all strategies and platforms, there were no instances where the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) fell below −0.5. However, a significant proportion of PMV values (ranging from 65% to 83%) were observed between −0.5 and 0.5, signifying a high level of occupant comfort. Additionally, for PMV values between 0.5 and 1.0, percentages ranged from 16% to 33% for both years.
