Application of improved NSGA-II model in multi-objective optimization model for sustainable building construction projects

Sustainable and environmentally friendly construction is the way of the future for building projects, and it is a practical illustration of how sustainable development is being implemented in the construction sector, where the control objectives are interdependent and constricting. However, when green construction is carried out, a conundrum arises since important factors like cost, environmental preservation, and safety cannot be addressed simultaneously. This issue limits the promotion of green construction. In order to solve the obstacles in the green construction process, the study chose to introduce three objectives to establish a multi-objective optimization model for project optimization. The local search idea in the mountain climbing algorithm was introduced into the non controlled sorting genetic algorithm to improve it, and a green construction multi-objective optimization model was established. Experimental verification of the feasibility and efficiency of improving non controlled sorting genetic algorithms; And evaluate and solve the established sustainable construction project. The results represent the maximum optimization values for each objective. The construction period is mainly distributed between 183–245 days, the cost distribution is between 16.6855 million yuan and 200861 million yuan, the quality distribution is between 0.864 and 0.878, the safety distribution is between 0.874 and 0.999, the environmental distribution is between 133.76 and 190.72, and the resource distribution is between 0.834 and 0.999, all of which meet the standards. Provide theoretical solutions for managers to manage green construction projects.

Development of a New Method for Assessing Project Risks in Sustainable Building Construction Projects in Developing Countries: The Case of Jordan

Sustainable buildings contribute significantly to achieving sustainable development and provide many benefits. However, sustainable building construction projects are riskier than traditional construction projects. Thus, this research aimed to identify and assess the risks in sustainable construction projects in Jordan based on their probabilities of occurrence and impacts on time and cost. For this purpose, a literature review and structured interviews were performed to identify the risks. Additionally, questionnaire surveys were conducted, and the relative relevance index and analytic hierarchy process were utilized to assess the probabilities and impacts of these risks on time and cost. After that, a focus group discussion was conducted. According to the the risks’ probability and impacts on time and cost, the top-scoring risks include changes to the original design, budgeting inaccuracies owing to a lack of experience with sustainable building projects, additional costs incurred as a result of the use of sustainable building construction materials and equipment, inadequate or inaccurate sustainable design information, insufficient funds from clients, inadequate project planning for a sustainable building project, a tight project schedule for a sustainable building project, and insufficient identification of sustainable construction’s scope. This research contributes to the body of knowledge and practice by providing a novel integrated method for assessing risks in sustainable building construction projects in Jordan.

A principal component analysis of sustainable building construction features for project delivery in South Africa

Purpose Successful project delivery for sustainable building construction (SBC) has been linked to certain features. Previous studies have emphasised the need to improve SBC practice in South Africa. The purpose of this study is to explore the SBC features for project delivery in South Africa. Design/methodology/approach A structured questionnaire elicited the primary data from 281 built environment professionals, mainly in South Africa’s Gauteng province. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for the data analysis. This study used the principal component analysis technique to ascertain the principal SBC features. Findings Three components of SBC features, namely, sustainable resource use and compliance, sustainable waste minimisation and recycling and sustainable designs and materials, were developed from the principal component analysis. The factor loadings of the constituent variables ranged from 0.570 to 0.836. The reliability of each component was evaluated, and the results were 0.966, 0.931 and 0.913. Practical implications The revelations from this study will aid the decision-making of the relevant stakeholders towards establishing improvement initiatives and mitigating the reluctance to shift from conventional building methods and poor knowledge sharing of SBC benefits. Originality/value This is one of the most recent South African studies that sheds light on the components of a successful SBC deployment. The findings of this study added to knowledge by confirming three fundamental features of SBC. This study recommends adequately considering the principal features for successful SBC project delivery in South Africa.

Collaborative and life cycle-based project delivery for environmentally sustainable building construction: views of Finnish project professionals and building operation and maintenance experts

PurposeThe energy performance gap (EPG) in building construction has been one of the major barriers to the realization of environmental and economic sustainability in the built environment. Although there have been a few studies addressing this issue, studying this topic with a special focus on the project delivery process has been almost overlooked. Hence, this study aims to address the EPG in building construction through the lens of collaborative and life cycle-based project delivery.Design/methodology/approachIn order to realize the objective of this study, the development of a theoretical framework based on the literature review was followed by a qualitative study in which 21 semi-structured interviews were conducted with Finnish project professionals representing clients, design/planning experts, constructors and building operation/maintenance experts to explore their views on the topic under study.FindingsThe findings reveal the project delivery-related causes of EPG in building construction. Moreover, the obtained results present a collaborative and life cycle-based delivery model that integrates project and product (i.e. building) life cycles, and it is compatible with all types of contractual frameworks in building construction projects.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough the findings of this study significantly contribute to theory and practice in the field of collaborative and sustainable construction project delivery, it is acknowledged that these findings are based on Finnish professionals’ input, and expanding this research to other regions is a potential area for further studies. Moreover, the developed model, although validated in Finland, needs to be tested in a broader context as well to gain wider generalizability.Originality/valueThe obtained results reveal the significance and impact of collaborative and life cycle-based project development and delivery on the realization of environmentally sustainable building construction.

Reverse Engineering of Building Layout Plan through Checking the Setting out of a Building on a Site Using 3D Laser Scanning Technology for Sustainable Building Construction: A Case Study

Among smart construction technologies, 3D laser scanning technology is used in a variety of applications, including progress measurement, quantity management, reverse engineering (RE), health monitoring, mechanical electronic plumbing (MEP), and so on, using point clouds data (PCD) in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) field. This technology is one of the important data acquisition technologies in construction status to perform active project management through the complete and accurate three-dimensional and visual judgment of building acts. The surveying work for setting out a building is the first step in constructing a building; the location of the building must match the design plan for a building to be sustainable. This is because, if a location deviation exceeds the permitted range, the building must be demolished and rebuilt. When this happens, sustainable construction management is impossible due to delays in the construction schedule, increased construction costs, waste generation, and so on. The purpose of this study is to investigate a case where the accuracy of setting out a building was measured in the construction stage of a building and the building layout design was modified by RE. Although the foundation construction of the case building was in progress, it was confirmed that the setting out of the building measured using a 3D laser scanner did not match with the building layout plan. Therefore, there was no legal problem even if the layout plan is modified according to the measured results, so the building layout plan was modified through RE. Consequently, it was confirmed that a case building under construction became sustainable through RE, and that sustainable construction management was possible by preventing construction schedule delays, increased construction costs, and waste generation.

Analysis of Factors Affecting the Implementation of Sustainable Building Projects

Abstract: Sustainability concept can be defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future” [7]. Conventional buildings approximately consumes more than 30% of energy while utilising around 40% of resources while also simultaneously generating 40% of wastes and 35% of harmful green-house gases [8]. The sustainable building construction approach has the potential to make a significant contribution to sustainable development, especially considering the building industry’s considerable influence. Based on our literature assessment, we discovered that multiple research reveal a general lack of consistency across outcomes in different geographical locations regarding factors impacting the implementation of sustainable building projects. Therefore this study is based on the analysis of factors that impact the implementation of sustainable building projects and the effects of sustainable building projects on various critical factors. For the result of the research analysis, the Reliability analysis which was conducted based on Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient for the factors affecting the implementation of sustainable building projects were found to be 0.76658442 which can conclude that the reliability level of the questionnaires responses was good while based on Relative Importance Index (RII) analysis factors affecting the implementation of sustainable building projects were ranked, with material related factors being the most significant (RII 0.705) among other factors. Additionally, the impact of implementing sustainable building projects on different critical factors was determined, with RII analysis indicating that the most significant impact will occur in terms of economic benefits (RII 0.767). Overall, the study tried fulfilling all the objectives which were stated.

A BIM-integrated multi objective optimization model for sustainable building construction management

Purpose The construction industry is tasked with creating sustainable, efficient and cost-effective buildings. This study aims to develop a building information modeling (BIM)-based multiobjective optimization (MOO) model integrating the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm III (NSGA-III) to enhance sustainability. The goal is to reduce embodied energy and cost in the design process. Design/methodology/approach Through a case study research method, this study uses BIM, NSGA-III and real-world data in five phases: literature review, identification of factors, BIM model development, MOO model creation and validation in the architecture, engineering and construction sectors. Findings The innovative BIM-based MOO model optimizes embodied energy and cost to achieve sustainable construction. A commercial building case study validation showed a reduction of 30% in embodied energy and 21% in cost. This study validates the model’s effectiveness in integrating sustainability goals, enhancing decision-making, collaboration, efficiency and providing superior assessment. Practical implications This model delivers a unified approach to sustainable design, cutting carbon footprint and strengthening the industry’s ability to attain sustainable solutions. It holds potential for broader application and future integration of social and economic factors. Originality/value The research presents a novel BIM-based MOO model, uniquely focusing on sustainable construction with embodied energy and cost considerations. This holistic and innovative framework extends existing methodologies applicable to various buildings and paves the way for additional research in this area.

Embodied carbon emissions of buildings: Taking a step towards net zero buildings

As global concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability escalate, the construction industry is shifting significantly towards eco-resilient and sustainable building practices. This paper comprehensively explores integrating Building Information Modelling (BIM) with eco-resilient principles to create a framework for designing and constructing sustainable buildings. This research introduced a practical approach for evaluating the embodied carbon from building construction, drawing insights from a residential building in Yangon City, Myanmar. The method developed in this study aims to assess the carbon footprints associated with distinct stages of the construction process, including raw material production and material transportation. Additionally, the proposed method compares the material embodied carbon, transportation embodied carbon, and total cost in the residential building, considering two cases of traditional and low-carbon materials. The results indicate that material embodied carbon contributes merely 84% to the overall, while material transportation makes up the remaining 16% for both cases. Utilising low-carbon materials yields remarkable reductions, with a 40% decrease in material embodied carbon and a 39% decrease in transportation carbon footprint compared to conventional materials. However, adopting low-carbon materials incurs a modest increase of approximately 6.7% in total cost. This study underscores the imperative of integrating low-carbon materials into the design of future passive buildings, advancing the pursuit of a net-zero strategy. This research underlines the potential for BIM-driven eco-resilient practices in mitigating carbon emissions and the need for continued innovation and collaboration in sustainable building design and construction.

Circular Material Usage Strategies and Principles in Buildings: A Review

Building construction accounts for a significant proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions, raw material extraction, and waste production. Applying circular economy (CE) principles in the building construction industry would considerably reduce these values. However, uptake by the industry is relatively slow, which is largely attributed to sectoral barriers, including limitations in knowledge and experience. This review paper aims to assess and contribute to diminishing these obstacles by offering a comprehensive review of circular material usage principles and strategies within the construction sector. Opportunities and facilitators of change are also presented, including innovations and emerging technologies in recycling, digitization, robotic systems, novel materials, and processing. Finally, four case studies demonstrate the application of circular theory via a novel block system, recycled aggregate, modular kitchen reuse, and an energy efficiency retrofit. The conclusions show that future efforts should prioritize the development of strong regulatory frameworks, awareness initiatives, and international cooperation. In this regard, the integration of technological advancements, such as AI, robotics, and blockchain, is essential for optimizing waste management efficiency. Furthermore, education on circular practices plays a critical role. Through global collaboration, standardizing circular construction approaches can promote a more sustainable and resilient building construction industry.

Contemporizing Earthen Architecture - A Futuristic and Sustainable Approach

Abstract Utmost metropolises and municipalities in developing countries are passing a massive migration of population from pastoral areas. The maturity of the pastoral population migrates to civic areas hoping to find a job and an advanced income for their survival. This large affluence creates a high demand for civic casing and structure, which the maturity of the settlers cannot go. also, the inadequate use of low- cost traditional structure accoutrements and construction ways in domestic construction has redounded in precious casing stock for the maturity of the poor. That's thus a critical need to assess indispensable structure accoutrements and ways that are both affordable and sustainable. Stabilized earth is an indispensable structure material that's significantly cheaper than using conventional slipup and concrete, and is also environmentally sustainable. Earth has been used as a construction material on a global position since age. Earth as the building material gives a lot of potential possibilities & alternative solutions, not only to the architects or the environment-conscious planners & designers, but it will encourage & respect the volunteers of commonality & make them blend towards the field of rethinking sustainable practices with their quality of living & even pave ways for skillful labors in the mainstream of the construction industry. The objective of the study is to understand the potential of the ‘Earth’ as the building material & trace its evolution of construction techniques since the ages by analyzing the ecological aspect, challenges & thermal performance of Earthen Architecture to explore innovative construction techniques in the current context & future trends Professionally architects do have the power – we must take a lead & be actively critical & analytical about the materials we choose for the design of our buildings. But innovation towards more circular material flow is already out there. We simply need to be bold enough to understand & test their potential & put them into the field of sustainable practice – the alternative & the affordable solution just lies beneath our feet – ‘the Earth’. This study is limited to the detailed understanding of building physics revolving around the Rammed Earth |RE| construction & CSEB |Compressed Stabilized Earth Block| used in the mainstream of sustainable building construction.

Embodied water-energy nexus towards sustainable building construction: Case of conventional Indian houses

Amid global water concerns and understanding ferocious water consumption in building construction entails attending to the construction embodied water (EW)- an infant realised domain. Let alone the practised embodied energy (EE); the study attempts to unleash a pragmatic guide to building construction sustainability through the EW-EE nexus. The cradle-to-gate study covers three conventional Indian houses in Jammu. It complies with general ISO-14044 and 14046 frameworks while consulting both-Indian and global material-wise EE and EW consumption databases. The hybrid approach adopted involves quota sampling, field-based investigations, descriptive statistics, and regression plots. The comprehensive system loop analysis seeks disaggregated (house-wise) and aggregated results. The Indian constructions reflect improved 7158 MJ/m2 EE but severe 16.7 kL/m2 EW vis-à-vis global scientific studies. Steel is no-longer the topmost EW-impacting material for Indian conventional houses, while stone aggregates, finishing, and decoration materials stand apart in elevating EW. Unearthing the weak EW-EE relationship underlines the incapability of EE-driven research to address EW effectively in the houses. As it stands, Architectural plus design (A + D) decision-making aiming to reduce EW also checks EE. Thus, EW deserves contemplation rather than EE alone in realising a holistic, sustainable built environment (SBE). Alongside consolidating EE research, the scarce EW domain receives much-needed dissemination. Besides striving to stimulate the scientific community, outcomes like the identified materials template are valuable for devising policy and A + D advocacy vis-à-vis EW-EE conservation. Seeking conventional building construction and design solutions through the EW-EE nexus is novel and meets multiple 2030 sustainable development goals.

Life Cycle Assessment and Building Information Modeling Integrated Approach: Carbon Footprint of Masonry and Timber-Frame Constructions in Single-Family Houses

The analysis of the carbon footprint of buildings is a key tool for assessing the impact of different buildings on climate change. Several frameworks and methodologies are available to calculate the footprint of buildings, including standards and norms, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and dedicated software tools. The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) programme for these calculations is both scientifically justified and very practical. This scientific publication focuses on the application of a BIM-based research methodology to analyse the carbon footprint of a single-family house. The research process included the following steps: (i) the design of a single-family house with masonry construction using Archicad 26, BIM programme, (ii) simulation of the building energy performance using the EcoDesigner Star plug-in, (iii) LCA using the plug-in for Archicad, (iv) preparation of a second model with timber-frame construction for comparison, and (v) comparative analysis of the single-family house models with masonry construction (building A) and timber-frame (building B). Analysis of the results highlights significant differences in CO2e emissions between buildings and the varying impact of individual elements on the total CO2e emissions of the buildings studied. Building A had significantly higher net emissions, amounting to 43,226.94 kg CO2e, in stark contrast to Building B’s significantly lower 13,522.13 kg CO2e. This discrepancy was also mirrored in the emission intensity, with Building A emitting at a rate of 281.06 kg CO2e/m2 compared to Building B’s 96.72 kg CO2e/m2. These findings are relevant for future work on sustainable building design and construction aiming to minimise negative environmental impacts. The goal of minimising the cumulative carbon footprint of buildings is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and combating climate change.

Framework for sustainable building design and construction using off-cut wood

Irregularly shaped wood created as waste from construction is considered challenging to reuse because of its complicated geometry and a lack of well-defined design methods. Here, we propose a sustainable building design and construction framework as a systematic methodology for upcycling irregular off-cut wood into new components. This framework consists of repeatable steps, as follows: a. material reclamation system: 3D scanning is employed as the main technical method to record a material’s 3D information and material-specific parameters and create a database; b. structural generation and assessment system: material screening, voxel-based filling, and structure generation based on finite element analysis to employed to assess the generated results prior to construction to optimize the final structure. Using furniture, building components, and installations/buildings, we verify the use of this framework for material recycling and generative design and construction.

Circular, Local, Open: A Recipe for Sustainable Building Construction

In response to the construction sector’s contribution to the climate crisis and exacerbation of social inequalities, we explore sustainable alternatives in building construction, informed by the illustrative case study of the Polycare construction system. First, through a Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) method, we show that the ecological footprint of circularity-oriented buildings based on polymer concrete is significantly lower than that of conventional cement concrete buildings. Despite the drawbacks of polymer concrete, its high-performance properties and the possibility to integrate secondary materials in its recipe can result in a reduced carbon footprint. When coupled with design-embedded modularity that facilitates circular processes (e.g., the disassembly and reuse of building components), buildings similar to those in the case study demonstrate potential for transitioning towards comprehensive sustainable building practices. Further, we discuss how this sustainability potential could be enhanced, drawing from interviews with Polycare’s stakeholders and key literature findings. In this direction, we provide a set of proposals anchored in the argument that threefold “circularity, localisation, and openness” is vital for sustainable and affordable alternatives, with openness being a crucial element for fostering innovation, adaptability, and scalability in building processes.

Physico–mechanical and durability performances of compressed earth blocks incorporating quackgrass straw: An alternative to fired clay

In developing countries such as Benin, the use of clay soils to produce fired clay bricks can be confronted with the problems of availability of the energy required for firing. The present study assesses the possibility to use these clay resources to produce compressed earth blocks (CEB) as alternative to fired clay. CEBs were produced by physically stabilizing a highly clayey soil with 0/5 granite dust, followed by chemical stabilization with 8wt% cement and the incorporation of 0 to 1.5wt% quackgrass straw. This resulted in dimensional stability of CEB, despite a slight swelling of 16.33 mm/m upon immersion observed only on CEB containing 1 and 1.5wt% straw. The coefficients of resistance to abrasion are well improved above the standardized minimum threshold of 2cm2/g, i.e. 29.7 to 7.72cm2/g for straw contents of 0 to 1.5%. Moreover, the maximum erosion depth of the CEB of 32.6mm/h, is well below the limit of 120mm/h, despite using a water pressure 10times higher than the standard pressure of 50kPa. These results testify to the durability of stabilized CEB. However, the dry and wet compressive strength decreased from 5.1 to 2.84MPa and from 3 to 1.02MPa, respectively, with the straw content of 0 to 1%. This does not hinder the use of these CEB for sustainable building construction, as the values of their compressive strength in dry and wet conditions were respectively above the required values of 2MPa and 1MPa.

Effect of various powder content on the properties of sustainable self-compacting concrete

This research goal is to evaluate the characteristics of glass powder (GP), quartz powder (QP), and limestone powder (LP) as Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) to replace cement content in terms of fresh and hardened properties of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) for sustainable building construction. Moreover, the obtained results were modeled using a soft computing approach. This investigation created ten mixtures incorporating varying percentages of GP, QP, and LP by replacing cement at about 0 %, 10 %, 20 %, and 30 %, respectively. The slump flow and J-ring tests were done to observe how SCMs affected the properties in fresh condition. In addition, the mechanical properties and pore structure configuration of the specimens were investigated. It was observed that GP and LP positively affected the fresh properties, increasing the mixes flowability by up to 8 %. Moreover, 20 % GP was able to enhance the compressive strength by 7 % by improving the pore structure of the cement matrix, which was confirmed by the mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis. Finally, the built machine learning models indicated good accord with test outcomes for Artificial Neural Network (R2 = 0.95) and could be applied to calculate the compressive strength of concrete containing GP, QP and LP for construction housing sector.

Life cycle environmental and cost assessment of prefabricated components manufacture

Prefabrication is regarded as a pivot for realizing sustainable building construction. Nevertheless, the sustainable manufacture level of prefabricated components remains unclear. To fill this gap, this study analyzed the environmental impact and optimization potential of prefabricated components via a life cycle assessment (LCA) method. Additionally, social and economic cost were assessed through LCA-based life cycle costing method to reveal the sustainability of prefabricated components. Results indicated that prefabrication rates of 50% and 30% could reduce the potential global warming impact by 31.78% and 13.94%, respectively, compared with the conventional construction method. However, prefabricated components production in China generated up to $ 4.35 × 109 social cost, with critical optimization areas focused on the provinces of Shandong and Hubei. By using artificial neural network estimation, 30% replacement of concrete by demolished concrete lumps could reduce potential fossil depletion and social cost by 10%, decreasing 5.08 × 109 kg CO2 eq potential global warming for China. Meanwhile, partial replacement of fuels with refuse-derived fuels and improved steel scrap utilization could contribute to further improving environmental performance.
