Accounting for the impact of tree size and soil spatial variability on leaching from orchards

Commercial agricultural production of orchards is based on water and fertilizer applications. Over-application and orchard spatial variability lead to water and nitrogen (N) losses through leaching and environmental damage. This work introduces a novel advanced method to quantify N and water leaching at the orchard scale by combining soil monitoring, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery to estimate tree size, leaf N and canopy content, and water flow and N transport models. Four neighboring commercial orange orchards were selected, and 48 representative trees were instrumented with suction cups and tensiometers at a depth of 90 cm. The physical properties of the soil profiles in the vicinity of each tree were determined. During 2019–2021, UAV structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry was used to classify the tree sizes into small, medium, and big categories. Soil porewater extraction and soil matric potential measurements were conducted every three weeks, while leaf N contents (LNC) were determined through bimonthly leaf tissue sampling. The LNC, N leaching, soil water state, and N use efficiency (NUE) (the ratio between the mass of plant N uptake and the mass of N applied per area) were strongly related to tree size classification. Results of the calibrated hydrological model illustrated that the 'big' trees exhibited minimal N leaching due to higher transpiration compared to the other tree size categories. An NUE map was established using the calibrated model and field measurements, demonstrating that soil spatial variability minimally affected N leaching compared to tree size distribution. The presented holistic approach can be used to identify N-leaching hotspots, improve orchard scale NUE estimates, and promote sustainable agricultural management practices.

Water pollution from pharmaceutical use in livestock farming: Assessing differences between livestock types and production systems.

Livestock production is a major source of pharmaceutical emissions to the environment. The current scientific discourse focusses on measuring and modelling emissions as well as assessing their risks. While several studies evidence the severity of pharmaceutical pollution resulting from livestock farming, differences in pollution between livestock types and production systems are largely unknown. In fact, there is no comprehensive analysis of factors influencing pharmaceutical use - the emission's source - in the diverse production systems. To address these knowledge gaps, we develop a framework to investigate pharmaceutical pollution from different livestock production systems and apply it in a first pilot assessment to compare pollution from organic and conventional cattle, pig and chicken production systems on selected indicator substances, covering antibiotics, antiparasitics, hormones and NSAIDs. Given lacking statistics, hereto we retrieved novel qualitative information about influential factors for pharmaceutical use and pollution from expert interviews combined with quantitative data on a.o. the environmental behavior of specific substances from literature. Our analysis shows that factors across a pharmaceutical's entire lifecycle influence pollution. However, not all factors are livestock type or production system dependent. The pilot assessment furthermore reveals that differences in pollution potential between conventional and organic production exist, but for antibiotics, NSAIDs (and partially antiparasitics) some factors lead to higher pollution potential in conventional, others in organic systems. For hormones we identified a comparatively higher pollution potential from conventional systems. Among the indicator substance, the assessment over the entire pharmaceutical lifecycle illustrated that flubendazole in broiler production has the highest per unit impact. The framework and its application in the pilot assessment generated insights useful to identify which substances, livestock types, production systems, or the combination thereof have high or low pollution potential, informing more sustainable agricultural management practices. The effect of conventional and sustainable agricultural management practices on carbon and water fluxes in a Mexican semi-arid region.

Agriculture is essential for food security. However, conventional agriculture alters the water and carbon cycle and soil properties. We investigated the effect of conventional management (CM) and sustainable management (SM) on the carbon and water cycle in crops of nopal (Np) and wheat (Wh). A micrometeorological eddy covariance tower was installed to measure water use through evapotranspiration (ET) and the net exchange of CO2 during the crop's development. Gross primary productivity (GPP), water use efficiency (WUE), and soil properties were obtained. The results showed that both agricultural managements influenced the carbon flux of the ecosystem, with a lower GPP and Reco in the nopal field (1.85 and 0.99 mmol C m-2 s-1, respectively), compared to the wheat field (6.34 and 1.8 mmol C m-2 s-1, respectively). It was mainly attributed to the metabolic plant differences, phenological stages, and wheat biomass developed during the winter. On the other hand, the accumulated ET in the SM-Wh plots was lower than SM-Np. Therefore, the crops subjected to sustainable practices use water more efficiently with 1.42 and 1.03 g C m-3 H2O for nopal and wheat, respectively. In regard to soil properties, it was observed that tillage alters microbial activity affecting organic matter and carbon. It can be concluded that the differences in agricultural management for both crops altered the carbon and water cycle and soil quality. In addition, implementing good agricultural practices allows more efficient use of water by the plant, higher retention of water in the soil, and less ET.

Effects of Eco-Friendly Product Application and Sustainable Agricultural Management Practices on Soil Properties and Phytosanitary Condition of Winter Wheat Crops

Despite the eco-political difficulties that accompany the application of principles of the European Green Deal policy on agriculture in the current world crisis, the need of their implementation seems to be absolutely necessary. The practices recommended within the sustainable agriculture strategy include replacing traditional fertilizers and pesticides with eco-friendly preparations and optimizing the management of biomass produced on farms. The aim of the research was to determine the effect of eco-friendly preparations application combined with straw incorporation on the chemical and microbiological soil parameters and plant sanitary status of winter wheat. The soil analyses included the determination of total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) content; mineral nitrogen (MN), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg) content, and the pH value. The number of soil bacteria (B), actinobacteria (A), fungi (F), and the total number of microorganisms (TNM) were also analyzed. The application of Effective Microorganisms resulted in an increase in TOC and TN concentration. The influence of biostimulator Asahi was diversified. The beneficial effect of straw on TOC, TN, and K content and microbial growth was also observed. Despite a number of limitations, the potential benefits of application of eco-friendly preparations provide ample reasons to continue experiments with their use.

Contribution of a Seeded Cover Crop Mixture on Biomass Production and Nutrition Status Compared to Natural Vegetation in a Mediterranean Olive Grove

Intensive agricultural management practices (i.e., the burning of pruning residues, the absence of organic amendments) lead to a reduction in organic matter and nutrients in the soil resulting in agroecosystem vulnerability. Implementing a cover crop would provide soil organic matter while increasing nutrition levels in the soil. A mixture of cover crop trial in sandy loam soils under Mediterranean climatic conditions was conducted in a rainfed olive grove in Western Crete. In this study, the dry biomass, macro- and micronutrition, and carbon status of the seeded cover crops (legume and grass) were compared to natural plants in an olive grove. Seeded cover crops were conducted in two sustainable management systems (cover crops solely, and a combination of compost, pruning residues, and cover crops); natural plants were in a conventional system involving soil tillage. In combination with conservation tillage practices, the addition of carbon inputs may improve soil fertility. Results indicate that the dry biomass production and C content of cover crops under sustainable management systems was significantly higher than that of the control. The higher dry biomass production and C content found in cover crops compared to the natural vegetation indicates not only that this type of management provides enhanced carbon storage, but can also potentially lead to a future increase in soil organic matter through decomposition. Higher dry biomass is important in the context of carbon sequestration, and cover crops facilitated carbon storage in this study. In addition, this study suggests that sustainable agricultural management practices would provide significant benefits in terms of nutrient retention and CO2 fixation, thus improving ecosystems in Mediterranean countries.

Photosynthesis and Fine Root Growth Dynamics of Soybean in Walnut-Soybean Agroforestry System.

Agroforestry system is regarded as a promising practice in sustainable agricultural management. However, the effects of long-term tree-based intercropping on crop remain poorly understood, especially in the Loess Plateau (China). In this study, the impacts of photosynthetic and respiration rate were determined by the portable photosynthesis system (Li-6400), and the effects of the root growth dynamics of soybean in the walnut-soybean intercropping system were measured by soil auger and WinRHIZO root analysis system, in the Loess Plateau. The results showed that soybean reached the highest net photosynthetic rate during flowering period, with the net photosynthetic rate of intercropped soybean, which was 20.40 μmol·m−2·s−1, significantly higher than that of its monocropped counterpart. Soybean biomass reached the maximum during the pod-bearing period, with intercropped soybean biomass being 25.49 g, significantly higher than that of its monocropped counterpart. The mean diameter and increased density of soybean fine roots reduced along with increased soil depth. Both the diameter (0.43 mm) and increased density (930 cm/dm3) of intercropped soybean fine roots were evidently higher than those of monocropped soybean (0.35 mm, 780 cm/dm3). With increasing cropping years, fine roots of intercropped soybean tended to be mainly distributed in soil at a depth between 0 and 20 cm from the fifth year. Collectively, compared with soybean monoculture, walnut-soybean agroforestry system is more conducive to soybean growth in the Loess Plateau.

A Broad Review of Soybean Research on the Ongoing Race to Overcome Soybean Cyst Nematode.

Simple SummaryThe cultivated soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is an economically important crop worldwide and is regularly used for protein and oil in human consumption, animal feed, industrial products and as an important element in sustainable agricultural management practices due to its nitrogen fixation capability. Soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines Ichinohe, is a plant parasitic nematode which is an overwhelming pest of soybean on a global scale. So far, soybean growers are limited to the soybean cultivars that can be planted in infested fields due to the lack of resistant genes identified against this pathogen. In this paper, we review a broad range of approaches which have been utilized in the race to understand the plant’s response to this nematode and the mechanisms of resistance, as well as to shed light onto the areas that need to be further investigated. The purpose of this review is to summarize the information that breeders and molecular biologists can use to better understand the host–pathogen relationship in the hopes of overcoming this devastating nematode.Plant pathogens greatly impact food security of the ever-growing human population. Breeding resistant crops is one of the most sustainable strategies to overcome the negative effects of these biotic stressors. In order to efficiently breed for resistant plants, the specific plant–pathogen interactions should be understood. Soybean is a short-day legume that is a staple in human food and animal feed due to its high nutritional content. Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is a major soybean stressor infecting soybean worldwide including in China, Brazil, Argentina, USA and Canada. There are many Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) conferring resistance to SCN that have been identified; however, only two are widely used: rhg1 and Rhg4. Overuse of cultivars containing these QTLs/genes can lead to SCN resistance breakdown, necessitating the use of additional strategies. In this manuscript, a literature review is conducted on research related to soybean resistance to SCN. The main goal is to provide a current understanding of the mechanisms of SCN resistance and list the areas of research that could be further explored.

Crop waste management: perspectives on alternative uses in India

Abstract India, which is primarily agricultural, produces approximately 683 million tonnes (MT) of crop waste. This waste is mostly used for animal feed and fuel. In India, roughly 178 MT of surplus crop leftovers and 92 MT of crop trash are burned each year because of a lack of sustainable agricultural management practices, resulting in severe air pollution. This has grown into a significant environmental issue, contributing to global warming. This crop residue burning can be prevented by adopting sustainable crop management practices through the support of government initiatives and policies. Crop waste generation, demand and feasibility differ from region to region. As a result, crop residue management plan tailored to the needs of each region should be developed. The central and state governments in India have launched a number of strategies to deal with excess crop leftovers. The majority of innovations have focused on rice husk, straw, maize waste, bagasse and banana crop waste, which account for 56% of India’s crop waste. In addition, several millet crops and cereals such as bajra, sorghum and others generate more than 352 MT of crop waste annually. These wastes are potentially available in most of the Indian states and cover 44% of crop waste, and these are not being used effectively. This review suggests advanced and practical research to develop millet crop residue management using conservation agricultural methods.

Potential Bioinoculants for Sustainable Agriculture Prospected from Ferruginous Caves of the Iron Quadrangle/Brazil

Biocontrol and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are important agricultural bioinoculants. This study aimed to prospect new potential bioinoculants for a more sustainable agriculture from ferruginous caves of the Brazilian Iron Quadrangle. Culturable bacteria, from seven caves and one canga soil sample, were evaluated for biocontroller activity of the phytopathogens Xanthomonas citri subsp. Citri—Xcc306 (citrus canker), Fusarium oxysporum—Fo (fusariosis), and Colletotrichum lindemuthianum—Cl89 (bean anthracnose). The ability of the superior candidates to solubilize inorganic phosphate, fix nitrogen, and produce hydrolytic enzymes and siderophores was then analyzed. Out of 563 isolates, 47 inhibited the growth of Xcc306 in vitro, of which 9 reduced citrus canker up to 68% when co-inoculated with the pathogen on host plants. Twenty of the 47 inhibited Fo growth directly by 51–73%, and 15 indirectly by 75–81%. These 15 inhibited Cl89 growth in vitro (up to 93% directly and 100% indirectly), fixed nitrogen, produced proteases and siderophores, showed motility ability, produced biofilm, and all but one solubilized inorganic phosphate. Therefore, 15 (2.66%) bacterial isolates, from the genera Serratia, Nissabacter, and Dickeya, act simultaneously as biocontrollers and PGPBs, and could be important candidates for future investigations in planta as an alternative to minimize the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers through sustainable agricultural management practices.

The Marine Endophytic Polyamine-Producing Streptomyces mutabilis UAE1 Isolated From Extreme Niches in the Arabian Gulf Promotes the Performance of Mangrove (Avicennia marina) Seedlings Under Greenhouse Conditions

Mangrove forests in the Arabian Gulf are under continuous threat. To increase plantations of gray mangrove (Avicennia marina) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 27 endophytic actinobacterial isolates obtained from mangrove roots were in vitro pre-screened to detect the polyamines (PAs) [putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm)]. We also determined the abilities of the endophytic PA-producing actinobacterial isolates in enhancing the growth of A. marina under greenhouse conditions. Although three highly PA-producing isolates were recovered from inside mangrove root tissues, Streptomyces mutabilis UAE1 constantly colonized root and stem inner tissues for 12 weeks, suggesting an endophytic association between this actinobacterial isolate and mangrove seedlings. When roots were inoculated with S. mutabilis, mangrove growth was remarkably enhanced under gnotobiotic and greenhouse conditions. This was evident from the significant (P < 0.05) increases in dry weight and length of root (66.7 and 65.5%, respectively) and shoot (64.8 and 58.0%, respectively), number of branches (64.3%), total leaf area (40.2%), and photosynthetic pigments (54.5% chlorophyll a; 40.0% chlorophyll b; and 53.1% carotenoids) of mangrove compared to the PA-non-producing Streptomyces sp. or control treatment. Growth promotion in plants treated with S. mutabilis was also supported by significant (P < 0.05) elevations in the contents of mangrove in planta PAs, auxins, and cytokinins, accompanied by a decrease in abscisic acid levels. No difference was, however, detected in growth and amounts of PAs or any plant growth regulators (PGRs) in plants treated with or without the PA-non-producing isolate. Our findings indicate that plant growth parameters can be enhanced as a consequence of secretion of Put, Spd, and Spm by S. mutabilis resulting in regulation of endogenous PAs and other PGRs in mangrove tissues. This study is the first record that aims to improve sustainable agricultural management practices using plant growth promoting (PGP) actinobacteria, endophytic in mangrove tissues to promote mangrove growth under greenhouse conditions. Such research may allow this region to be a model to study the synergistic S. mutabilis–mangrove interactions and the future impacts on mangrove reforestation in the Arabian Gulf and elsewhere where mangrove forests are in threat.

Simulating soil organic carbon in maize-based systems under improved agronomic management in Western Kenya

Improved management practices should be implemented in croplands in sub-Saharan Africa to enhance soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and/or reduce losses associated with land-use change, thereby addressing the challenge of ongoing soil degradation. DayCent, a process-based biogeochemical model, provides a useful tool for evaluating which management practices are most effective for SOC sequestration. Here, we used the DayCent model to simulate SOC using experimental data from two long-term field sites in western Kenya comprising of two widely promoted sustainable agricultural management practices: integrated nutrient management (i.e. mineral fertilizer and crop residues/farmyard manure incorporation) and conservation agriculture (i.e. minimum tillage and crop residue retention). At both sites, correlations between measured and simulated SOC were low to moderate (R2 of 0.25−0.55), and in most cases, the model produced fairly accurate prediction of the SOC trends with a low relative root mean squared error (RRMSE < 7%). Consistent with field measurements, simulated SOC declined under all improved management practices. The model projected annual SOC loss rates of between 0.32 to 0.35 Mg C ha-1 yr-1 in continuously tilled maize (Zea mays) systems without fertilizer or organic matter application over the period 2003–2050. The most effective practices in reducing the losses were the combined application of 4 Mg ha-1 of farmyard manure and 2 Mg ha-1 of maize residue retention (reducing losses up to 0.22 Mg C ha-1 yr-1), minimum tillage in combination with maize residue retention (0.21 Mg C ha-1 yr-1), and rotation of maize with soybean (Glycine max) under minimum tillage (0.17 Mg C ha-1 yr-1). Model results suggest that response of the passive SOC pool to the different management practices is a key driver of the long-term SOC trends at the two study sites. This study demonstrates the strength of the DayCent model in simulating SOC in maize systems under different agronomic management practices that are typical for western Kenya.

A Spatially Distributed, Physically-Based Modeling Approach for Estimating Agricultural Nitrate Leaching to Groundwater

Nitrogen-nitrate, while being fundamental for crop production, is of particular concern in the agricultural sector, as it can easily leach to the water table, worsening groundwater quality. Numerical models and Geographic Information System may support the estimation of nitrate leaching rates in space and time, to support sustainable agricultural management practices. In this paper, we present a module for the simulation of the processes involved in the nitrogen cycle in the unsaturated zone, including nitrate leaching. This module was developed taking steps from the ANIMO and EPIC model frameworks and coupled to the hydrological models integrated within the FREEWAT platform. As such, the nitrogen cycle module was then included in the FREEWAT platform. The developed module and the coupling approach were tested using a simple synthetic application, where we simulated nitrate leaching through the unsaturated zone for a sunflower crop irrigated district during a dry year. The results of the simulation allow the estimation of daily nitrate concentration values at the water table. These spatially distributed values may then be further used as input concentration in models for simulating solute transport in aquifers.

The Role of Small Farm Activities for the Sustainable Management of Agricultural Landscapes: Case Studies from Europe

In Europe, a broad variety of agricultural landscape types have originated as a result of traditional farming activities and landscape diversity maintenance over centuries. The rapid development of socio-economic activities during the twentieth century caused significant loss of traditional rural landscapes. Traditional/historical European agricultural landscape types (EALs) represent a type of cultural landscape with many specific unique cultural, historical, and biodiversity patterns. Despite their high value, maintenance in practice is lacking. European farmers and landowners need to learn how to implement innovative multifunctional farming techniques within these landscapes. An online interactive educational tool of the ERASMUS+ FEAL project (FEAL: multifunctional Farming for the sustainability of European Agricultural Landscapes) deals with these topics. Case studies from the FEAL project showed the best examples of sustainable agricultural management practices in different types of EALs. The aim of this article was to evaluate case studies within coordination of information on the environment (CORINE) Land Cover (CLC) 2012 classes representing traditional land use forms, nature and landscape protection areas, and ecologically important areas, as well as High Nature Value (HNV) farmland. Results based on 28 case studies from five European countries interpreted the positive external effects of farms on values of EALs. A prevailing number of farms exhibited a coincidence between CLC 2012 classes with traditional land use forms and HNV farmland and protected areas. Regarding land cover classes with traditional land use forms, key words selected by farmers gave importance to recreation and tourism, furthering of biodiversity, direct sale, social farming, renewable energy, and traditional building. The highest frequencies of the key words were achieved in CLC 2012 classes concerning (to some degree) natural and semi-natural ecosystems.

An integrated multi-criteria analysis for assessing sustainability of agricultural production at regional level

Assessment of agricultural production sustainability is a multi-dimensional task that involves the quantification of various economic, social and environmental indicators at different scales and uncertainty levels. In this context, a particularly challenging approach is proposed involving the appropriate selection of the most representative criteria that ensure economic viability, eco-friendliness and social development, in order to overcome the limitations of other methodological approaches that are often vague and contradictory. In this study, a holistic methodology that integrates life cycle analysis (LCA), environmental risk assessment (ERA) along with on-site farm and regional surveys using the multi-criteria environment of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is designed for the identification of the most sustainable agricultural management practices at regional level. Based on a set of 13 representative sub-criteria, the proposed approach was applied to Pistacia vera L. production in Aegina island, Greece, where narrow range of resources is available, groundwater supply is scarce and of poor quality. Overall, three alternative scenarios, i.e. Baseline scenario representing the current production (BL) as well as Composting (CO) and Biochar Use (BU) scenarios aiming at sustainability improvement were investigated. Results of multi-criteria and sensitivity analyses suggest that the optimal sustainable management scenario is CΟ, which involves on-site composting of organic solid waste, mainly produced at farm site, and subsequent application in the field. The proposed methodology shows significant potential as a valuable multi-criteria tool that can be easily adapted at regional level to assist decision makers such as farmers and their associations, policy makers, local and regional authorities to efficiently explore a range of alternative farm management practices and thus identify pathways toward sustainability.

Understory Vegetation in Oil Palm Plantations Promotes Leopard Cat Activity, but Does Not Affect Rats or Rat Damage

The expansion of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations is a primary cause of land-use change and biodiversity loss in Southeast Asia. This has led to an increasing demand for the development of more sustainable agricultural management practices in plantations, such as Integrated Pest Management. Although populations of carnivorous mammals show declines when forest is converted to oil palm, some species, such as Leopard Cats (Prionailurus bengalensis) have been found to persist. They are often encouraged by plantation managers for their conservation value, and as agents of pest control to manage rat populations. Despite this, little is known about whether they reduce pest rat numbers, or whether plantation management affects how they use the oil palm habitat. This study was based at the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function in Tropical Agriculture (BEFTA) Programme in mature oil palm plantations in Riau, Sumatra, where there are three management strategies altering understory vegetation structure. We quantified Leopard Cat activity, invasive rat abundance and rat damage using camera traps, live traps, and visual estimates respectively. We collected data over a four-year period, before and after the management strategies were applied. We recorded three species of wild mammals (Leopard Cats, Common Palm Civets, and Wild Pig) within the plantations, of which Leopard Cats made up 82% of the total number of observations. We found that Leopard Cat habitat use was higher with increased understory vegetation, but that there was no effect of the vegetation treatments on rat abundance or rat damage. There was also a trend for reduced rat abundance with increased Leopard Cat activity. These results show that management practices can significantly affect Leopard Cat habitat use, with potential benefits for pest control. They also highlight the value of large-scale long-term manipulative experiments for developing more sustainable management practices in oil palm.

Changes in the Soil Bacterial Community in a Chronosequence of Temperate Walnut-Based Intercropping Systems

Agroforestry (tree-based intercropping) is regarded as a promising practice in sustainable agricultural management. However, the impacts of converting cropland to an agroforestry system on microbial communities remain poorly understood. In this study, we assessed the soil bacterial communities in conventional wheat monoculture systems and a chronosequence (5–14 years) walnut-wheat agroforestry system through the high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes to investigate the effect of agroforestry age on soil bacterial communities and the correlation between soil properties and bacterial communities in the agroecosystem. Our results demonstrate that establishing and developing walnut tree-based agroforestry increased soil bacterial diversity and changed bacterial community structure. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria were the dominant soil bacterial phyla and Bacillus was the dominant genus. Crop monoculture systems were characterized by the Bacillus (Firmicutes)-dominated microbial community. The relative abundance of Bacillus decreased with agroforestry age; however, subgroups of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria increased. Of the selected soil physicochemical properties, soil pH and bulk density were significantly correlated with bacterial alpha diversity, and soil pH and organic carbon were the principal drivers in shaping the soil microbial structure as revealed by redundancy analysis (RDA).

Effect of Large-Scale Cultivated Land Expansion on the Balance of Soil Carbon and Nitrogen in the Tarim Basin

Land reclamation influences the soil carbon and nitrogen cycling, but its scale and time effects on the balance of soil carbon and nitrogen are still uncertain. Taking the Tarim Basin as the study area, the impact of land reclamation on the soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratio was explored by the multiple temporal changes of land use and soil samples. Remote sensing detected that cropland nearly doubled in area from 1978 to 2015. Spatial analysis techniques were used to identify land changes, including the prior land uses and cultivation ages. Using land reclamation history information, a specially designed soil sampling was conducted in 2015 and compared to soil properties in ca. 1978. Results found a decoupling characteristic between the C:N ratio and SOC or TN, indicating that changes in SOC and TN do not correspond directly to changes in the C:N ratio. The land reclamation history coupled with the baseline effect has opposite impacts on the temporal rates of change in SOC, TN and C:N ratios. SOC and TN decreased during the initial stage of conversion to cropland and subsequently recovered with increasing cultivation time. By contrast, the C:N ratio for soils derived from grassland increased at the initial stage but the increase declined when cultivated longer, and the C:N ratio decreased for soils derived from forest and fluctuated with the cultivation time. Lower C:N ratios than the global average and its decreasing trend with increasing reclamation age were found in newly reclaimed croplands from grasslands. Sustainable agricultural management practices are suggested to enhance the accumulation of soil carbon and nitrogen, as well as to increase the C:N ratio to match the nitrogen deposition to a larger carbon sequestration.

Reducing losses but failing to sequester carbon in soils – the case of Conservation Agriculture and Integrated Soil Fertility Management in the humid tropical agro-ecosystem of Western Kenya

Agriculture is a global contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, causing climate change. Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration is seen as a pathway to climate change mitigation. But, long-term data on the actual contribution of tropical soils to SOC sequestration are largely absent. To contribute to filling this knowledge gap, we measured SOC in the top 15cm over 12 years in two agronomic long-term trials in Western Kenya. These trials include various levels – from absence to full adoption – of two widely promoted sustainable agricultural management practices: Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM; i.e. improved varieties, mineral fertilizer and organic matter/manure incorporation) and Conservation Agriculture (CA; improved varieties, mineral fertilizer, zero-tillage and crop residues retention). None of the tested ISFM and CA treatments turned out successful in sequestering SOC long-term. Instead, SOC decreased significantly over time in the vast majority of treatments. Expressed as annual averages, losses ranged between 0.11 and 0.37tCha−1 yr−1 in the CA long-term trial and 0.21 and 0.96tCha−1 yr−1 in the ISFM long-term trial. Long-term application of mineral N and P fertilizer did not mitigate SOC losses in both trials. Adopting zero-tillage and residue retention alone (as part of CA) could avoid SOC losses of on average 0.13tCha−1 yr−1, while this was 0.26tCha−1 yr−1 in response to mere inclusion of manure as part of ISFM. However, cross-site comparison disclosed that initial SOC levels of the two trials were different, probably as a result of varying land use history. Such initial soil status was responsible for the bulk of the SOC losses and less so the various tested agronomic management practices. This means, while ISFM and CA in the humid tropical agro-ecosystem of Western Kenya contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing SOC losses, they do not help offsetting anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions elsewhere.

Plant Functional Traits: Soil and Ecosystem Services.

Decline of ecosystem services has triggered numerous studies aiming at developing more sustainable agricultural management practices. Some agricultural practices may improve soil properties by expanding plant biodiversity. However, sustainable management of agroecosystems should be performed from a functional plant trait perspective. Advances in functional ecology, especially plant functional trait effects on ecosystem processes and services, provide pivotal knowledge for ecological intensification of agriculture; this approach acknowledges that a crop field is an agroecosystem whose ecological processes influence soil properties. We highlight the links between plant functional traits and soil properties in relation to four major ecosystem processes involved in vital ecosystem services: food production, crop protection, climate change mitigation, and soil and water conservation, aiming towards ecological intensification of sustainable agricultural and soil management.

Root interactions in a maize/soybean intercropping system control soybean soil-borne disease, red crown rot.

BackgroundWithin-field multiple crop species intercropping is well documented and used for disease control, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. As roots are the primary organ for perceiving signals in the soil from neighboring plants, root behavior may play an important role in soil-borne disease control.Principal FindingsIn two years of field experiments, maize/soybean intercropping suppressed the occurrence of soybean red crown rot, a severe soil-borne disease caused by Cylindrocladium parasiticum (C. parasiticum). The suppressive effects decreased with increasing distance between intercropped plants under both low P and high P supply, suggesting that root interactions play a significant role independent of nutrient status. Further detailed quantitative studies revealed that the diversity and intensity of root interactions altered the expression of important soybean PR genes, as well as, the activity of corresponding enzymes in both P treatments. Furthermore, 5 phenolic acids were detected in root exudates of maize/soybean intercropped plants. Among these phenolic acids, cinnamic acid was released in significantly greater concentrations when intercropped maize with soybean compared to either crop grown in monoculture, and this spike in cinnamic acid was found dramatically constrain C. parasiticum growth in vitro.ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this study is the first report to demonstrate that intercropping with maize can promote resistance in soybean to red crown rot in a root-dependent manner. This supports the point that intercropping may be an efficient ecological strategy to control soil-borne plant disease and should be incorporated in sustainable agricultural management practices.
