Ecosystem restoration and management based on nature-based solutions in China: Research progress and representative practices

Ecosystem restoration, as a core strategy for implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS), inherently aligns with NbS principles. Despite significant progress in biodiversity conservation and restoration, China still faces risks of ecosystem degradation. To maximize the potential of NbS in China's restoration efforts, it is crucial to develop a framework rooted in NbS principles. However, the application of NbS is hindered by weak theoretical foundations and a lack of comprehensive case studies. This study integrated NbS principles with key theoretical concepts, including sustainable development, socio-ecological systems, ecosystem services, biodiversity, restoration ecology, natural capital, and ecological products, to develop a NbS-based theoretical framework for ecosystem restoration. Drawing on insights from the "Generation Restoration'' report, we synthesized representative practices across various Chinese ecosystems, including farmlands, forests, freshwater, grasslands, oceans, coasts, peatlands and urban areas. Our study provides both a theoretical foundation and practical guidance for integrating NbS into ecosystem restoration, aiming to enhance conservation efforts and promote sustainable development in China.

Urban sustainable development goals and ecosystem services: Pathways to achieving coordination

It has been widely recognized that progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must be better harmonized with Ecosystem Services (ESs) to tackle global challenges. In China, the National Key Ecological Function Areas (NKEFAs) were set up as one of the ecological fiscal transfer projects. Despite its significant influences on the SDGs-ESs nexus, there is a lack of empirical studies on the effects and mechanisms of policy. In response, this study provides a synthesized framework that incorporates the coupling coordination degree between the Urban Sustainable Development Goals (USDGs) and Ecosystem Services Scores (ESSs), empirically verifies the policy effect using the difference-in-differences model, and then further investigates the mechanisms of government action to coordinate urban SDGs and ESs. The results show that: (1) The coupling coordination degree between USDGs and ESSs varies significantly across different regions but steadily increases over time, with a faster increasing rate of coordination degree growth in NKEEFAs pilot cities compared to non-pilot cities. (2) The policy has demonstrated benefits in coordinating USDGs and ESSs with a coefficient of 0.005. In detail, the policy enhances ESSs but concurrently exerts a negative influence on USDGs, with coefficients are 0.008 and −0.004 respectively, suggesting an uneven distribution of the policy's impacts. (3) The study unveils the 'technological innovation effect' and the 'industrial agglomeration effect' as crucial mediating pathways for policy effect, laying a solid foundation for USDGs and ESSs coordination. In total, the study highlights the critical need to account for regional development disparities and adequate funding in ecological protection policies to ensure fairness and effectiveness from a central decision-making standpoint. It recommends enhancing transparency in fiscal expenditures and fostering regional joint coordination to address local government challenges. These insights from this study can offer valuable guidance for policymakers to refine policy implementation and promote the coordination of regional ESs and SDGs.

RhizoMAP: a comprehensive, nondestructive, and sensitive platform for metabolic imaging of the rhizosphere

BackgroundElucidating the intricate structural organization and spatial gradients of biomolecular composition within the rhizosphere is critical to understanding important biogeochemical processes, which include the mechanisms of root-microbe interactions for maintaining sustainable plant ecosystem services. While various analytical methods have been developed to assess the spatial heterogeneity within the rhizosphere, a comprehensive view of the fine distribution of metabolites within the root-soil interface has remained a significant challenge. This is primarily due to the difficulty of maintaining the original spatial organization during sample preparation without compromising its molecular content.ResultsIn this study, we present a novel approach, RhizoMAP, in which the rhizosphere molecules are imprinted on selected polymer membranes and then spatially profiled using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI). We enhanced the performance of RhizoMAP by combining the use of two thin (< 20 μm) membranes (polyester and polycarbonate) with distinct MALDI sample preparations. This optimization allowed us to gain insight into the distribution of over 500 different molecules within the rhizosphere of poplar (Populus trichocarpa) grown in rhizoboxes filled with mycorrhizae soil. These two membranes, coupled with three different sample preparation conditions, enabled us to capture the distribution of a wide variety of molecules that included phytohormones, amino acids, sugars, sugar glycosides, polycarboxylic acids components of the Krebs cycle, fatty acids, short aldehydes and ketones, terpenes, volatile organic compounds, fertilizers from the soil, and others. Their spatial distribution varies greatly, with some following root traces, others showing diffusion from roots, some associated with soil particles, and many having distinct hot spots along the plant root or surrounding soil. Moreover, we showed how RhizoMAP can be used to localize the origin of the molecules and molecular transformation during root growth. Finally, we demonstrated the power of RhizoMAP to capture molecular distributions of key metabolites throughout a 20 cm deep rhizosphere.ConclusionsRhizoMAP is a method that provides nondestructive, untargeted, broad, and sensitive metabolite imaging of root-associated molecules, exudates, and soil organic matter throughout the rhizosphere, as demonstrated in a lab-controlled native soil environment.

A Comprehensive Review on Entomovectoring in Agroecosystem

Protecting beneficial arthropods is essential, as they provide crucial services beyond pollination, including disease and insect pest management. The combination of several ecosystem services for agricultural sustainability requires the recognition that biodiversity is coupled with bio-complexity, productivity, resilience, and ecosystem functionality. Insects such as bumblebees, mason bees, and honey bees have long been employed professionally for pollination, likewise microbial biocontrol agents are frequently employed in pest management. A key aspect of pollination ecology is entomovectoring technology that utilizes managed bees to disseminate biocontrol agents to flowering crops. This can enhance crop yields by providing non-chemical protection against pests and diseases as well as enhancing pollination efficiency. This technology is based on bee management, manipulation of bee behaviour, components of cropping system, plant-pathogen-vector-antagonist system which can be a trend-breaking pest management system in agriculture and will give double benefit to agriculture i.e. crop pollination and crop protection acting together for increased crop yield and quality.

Mapping available water capacity as a soil production capital metric in Australia

This study aims to identify a key soil property influencing farmland prices as a soil production capital indicator for soil security. There is generally a strong relationship between farmland price and production capital, as well as with biomass production. From a soil-centric point of view, under dryland agriculture in Australia, we hypothesise that soil available water capacity (AWC) is a key soil property influencing farmland prices and consequently can act as a soil production capital indicator. Here, we relate soil AWC of Australia to median farmland prices using digital soil maps of AWC. The results revealed that AWC from 0 to 100 cm is significantly associated with farmland prices (r = 0.31, p-value<0.05), providing a linear regression to estimate the soil production capital. As long as the AWC (mm) is above 67.6, the coefficient suggests that a 1 mm increase in AWC (mm) results in an increment of 293.6 $/ha in farmland prices in Australia. Additionally, an assessment of the anthropological impact on soils was conducted through phenosoil-genosoil differentiation analysis. We concluded that despite the shared formation characteristics of each pedogenon, soils with the highest AWC were not necessarily chosen for agricultural purposes since European settlement. Furthermore, our findings indicate that phenosoils in Queensland and Tasmania have higher levels of insecurity, likely due to intensified and inappropriate farming that may result in AWC reductions. This analysis provides another perspective to quantify the capital dimension of soil security, valuing its critical role in sustainable food systems and ecosystem services.

Intermediate Disturbances Enhance Microbial Enzyme Activities in Soil Ecosystems.

The Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH) posits that maximal plant biodiversity is attained in environments characterized by moderate ecological disturbances. Although the applicability of the IDH to microbial diversity has been explored in a limited number of studies, there is a notable absence of experimental reports on whether soil microbial 'activity' demonstrates a similar response to the frequency or intensity of environmental disturbances. In this investigation, we conducted five distinct experiments employing soils or wetland sediments exposed to varying intensities or frequencies of disturbances, with a specific emphasis on disturbances associated with human activity, such as chemical contamination, hydrologic changes, and forest thinning. Specifically, we examined the effects of bactericide and heavy metal contamination, long-term drainage, tidal flow, and thinning management on microbial enzyme activities in soils. Our findings revealed that microbial enzyme activities were highest at intermediate disturbance levels. Despite the diversity in experiment conditions, each trial consistently demonstrated analogous patterns, suggesting the robustness of the IDH in elucidating microbial activities alongside diversity in soils. These outcomes bear significant implications for ecological restoration and management, as intermediate disturbance may expedite organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycles, crucial for sustaining ecosystem services in soils.

Land use/land cover dynamics in the northern watershed of lake Tana: implications for water quality

Rapid population growth-induced urbanization, industrialization, deforestation, settlement expansion and habitat destruction are significant drivers of LU/LC change at global scale. The uncontrolled LU/LC change, specifically in developing countries like Ethiopia, poses significant environmental threats to water quality, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. This study, therefore, examined LU/LC trends in the Lake Tana catchment, Ethiopia from 1993 to 2022, analyzed the impact of changes on water quality and identified major driving factors for policy input. ArcGIS software and Landsat imagery were employed toproduce maps for 10 years. Water quality data were obtained from primary and secondary sources from 2002 to 2022. The relationship between LU/LC changes and water quality was examined using Pearson’s correlation and principal component analysis (PCA). Results revealed significant (p &amp;lt; 0.05) spatio-temporal variations in water quality parameters, with almost all parameters showing a substantial increase from 2002 to 2012 and some declined in 2022. LU/LC changes were categorized into six classes with an overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of 92.2% and 0.86%, respectively. Various LU/LC classes were highly correlated with a particular water quality parameter. Settlement and crop land expansion were positively correlated with nutrients such as (NH3− + NH4+-N), NO3-N, SRP, and TP. Forestation was positively correlated with good water quality such as DO and pH, while they were negatively correlated with temperature, EC, SRP, and NO3-N demonstrating a strong linkage between LU/LC and water quality. These findings therefore, validate the significance of prioritizing LU/LC changes for sustainable water quality and ecosystem service improvement in the Lake Tana catchment.

Optimizing cultivated land under non-grain expansion in rural China: unveiling the spatial dynamics of trade-offs and synergies among ecosystem services

ABSTRACT Non-grain expansion in rural China has affected the stability of cultivated land structure and the sustainability of ecosystem services (ESs). Delving into the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of ES interactions is essential for refined and differentiated cultivated land management practices. Taking Tongxiang City as an example, this study mapped the variations of four ESs of cultivated land from 2000–2020, identified their socio-ecological drivers, explored the spatial non-stationarity characteristics of trade-off/synergy among different ESs, and proposed a zoning control framework for cultivated land. The results indicated that (1) food supply (FS) and habitat quality (HQ) decreased by 40.40% and 1.27%, respectively, while carbon sequestration (CS) and soil conservation (SC) increased by 8.5% and 26.21%, respectively. Areas of decreased ES were mainly concentrated in the southwest, while areas of increased ES supply were dispersed. (2) CS-SC and CS-FS ES pairs exhibited obvious trade-offs, with concave trade-offs dominating between 2000 and 2010, and convex trade-offs prevailing from 2010 to 2020. These ES trade-offs were mainly distributed in the southeast and northern regions. HQ-CS and FS-SC presented significant synergies, predominantly characterized by linear synergy and situated in the northern and central areas. (3) The spatial differentiation of ESs was mostly explained by landscape configuration drivers. (4) Different cultivated land zones were delineated based on the spatial non-stationarity of trade-offs/synergies and ES advantage areas. This study contributes to our understanding of the changes in ESs resulting from non-grain expansion and offers valuable guidance for implementing differentiated measures for cultivated land zoning and management.

Farming system archetypes help explain the uptake of agri-environment practices in Europe

The adoption of agri-environment practices (AEPs) is crucial for safeguarding the long-term sustainability of ecosystem services within European agricultural landscapes. However, the tailoring of agri-environment policies to the unique characteristics of farming systems is a challenging task, often neglecting local farm parameters or requiring extensive farm survey data. Here, we develop a simplified typology of farming system archetypes (FSAs), using field-level data on farms’ economic size and specialisation derived from the Integrated Administration and Control System in three case studies in Germany, Czechia and the United Kingdom. Our typology identifies groups of farms that are assumed to react similarly to agricultural policy measures, bridging the gap between efforts to understand individual farm behaviour and broad agri-environmental typologies. We assess the usefulness of our approach by quantifying the spatial association of identified archetypes of farming systems with ecologically relevant AEPs (cover crops, fallow, organic farming, grassland maintenance, vegetation buffers, conversion of cropland to grassland and forest) to understand the rates of AEP adoption by different types of farms. Our results show that of the 20 archetypes, economically large farms specialised in general cropping dominate the agricultural land in all case studies, covering 56% to 85% of the total agricultural area. Despite regional differences, we found consistent trends in AEP adoption across diverse contexts. Economically large farms and those specialising in grazing livestock were more likely to adopt AEPs, with economically larger farms demonstrating a proclivity for a wider range of measures. In contrast, economically smaller farms usually focused on a narrower spectrum of AEPs and, together with farms with an economic value <2 000 EUR, accounted for 70% of all farms with no AEP uptake. These insights indicate the potential of the FSA typology as a framework to infer key patterns of AEP adoption, thus providing relevant information to policy-makers for more direct identification of policy target groups and ultimately for developing more tailored agri-environment policies.

The Synergistic Structure and Potential Development for Sustainable Ecosystem Services in Urban Areas along the Grand Canal: A Case Study of the Wuxi Segment

The Grand Canal possesses a unique ecosystem as one of the world cultural heritage sites. However, its ecological roles and services have been underemphasized in heritage conservation efforts, leading to environmental pollution and the degradation of its heritage value, especially in the highly urbanized southern Jiangsu section downstream. This study examines the synergy between regulating ecosystem services (RESs) and cultural ecosystem services (CESs) along the highly urbanized Wuxi section of the Grand Canal, as well as the environmental drivers influencing this relationship. The findings reveal that the synergy between CESs and RESs does not occur at the urban–rural interface but rather in areas 4-6 km away from the Central Business District (CBD). Certain drivers, such as floor area ratio (FAR) and plot ratio (PR), enhance both RES and CES within specific sections. Beyond riparian green belts, various low-density, dispersed, and well-vegetated lands could serve as significant contributors to future ecosystem service (ES) synergy. These conclusions further elucidate the spatial distribution of the heritage cultural services and other ES synergy along the Grand Canal, providing scientific support for broader improvements guiding the sustainable co-development in similar urbanized areas.

Integration of Watershed eco-physical health through Algorithmic game theory and supervised machine learning

The eco-physical health assessment of watersheds is crucial for sustainable water resource management and ecosystem services. This study quantifies the eco-physical health of the Talar watershed in Iran using the geometric mean method (GMM), game-theoretic algorithm (GTA), and machine learning algorithms including Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Simple Linear Regression (SLR), and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) for distributed and semi-distributed monitoring. The results show that the RF algorithm performed better than other models, as indicated by MAE, MSE, RMSE, and AUC statistics with values of 0.032, 0.003, 0.058, and 0.940, respectively. The watershed health index prioritization with different approaches showed that the pattern of watershed health changes positively from upstream to downstream. Based on the watershed health prioritization using GMM, it can be said that sub-watersheds Int6 and Int5 are the healthiest sub-watersheds in the studied watershed, with values of 0.93 and 0.90, respectively. Based on the watershed prioritization using the GTA approach, it can also be said that sub-watersheds Int6, Int5, and Int01 are the healthiest ones. In the case of the RF algorithm, the average values of the pixels in each sub-watershed showed that sub-watersheds Int6 and Int01 were recognized as the healthiest sub-watersheds with values of 0.91 and 0.88, respectively. Int6 consistently emerged as the healthiest sub-watershed across all methods, attributed to high TWI and NDVI values and low slope, DEM, erosion, and CN values. In general, it can be said that the watershed health index in the studied catchment fully followed the factors affecting the catchment's health and that the spatial patterns of change of this index were consistent with the physiographic and hydroclimatic conditions in all three semi-distributed and distributed approaches. The study's implications underline the importance of multi-criteria and multi-algorithm approaches in accurately assessing and managing watershed health for sustainable development.

Prioritizing plants for conservation in forests over limestone in Guiuan Marine Resource Protected Landscapes and Seascapes (GMRPLS), Samar Island, Philippines using a localized conservation priority index (LCPI)

Philippine landscapes and seascapes have been undergoing massive degradation especially with the onset of the Anthropocene epoch. The unique forests over limestone in Guiuan Marine Resource Protected Landscapes and Seascapes in Eastern Samar have never been exempted from ongoing deteriorating conditions leading to the diminishing ecosystem services for the nearby villages. Conservation plan and action are urgent. The current paper determines top-priority plants for conservation using the localized conservation priority index (LCPI), which considers the contexts of the locality. LCPI follows a point scoring procedure recognizing holistic social, cultural, ecological and biophysical variables, such as cultural use, frequency value of occurrences in study plots, species distribution, harvesting risk, and economic use. Research findings indicated Caryota rumphiana Mart., Saribus rotundifolius (Lam.) Blume Artocarpus blancoi (Elmer) Merr., Shorea negrosensis Foxw., Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br., Calophyllum soulattri Burm.f., Artocarpus rubrovenius Warb., Nothaphoebe leytensis (Elmer) Merr., Shorea astylosa Foxw., Palaquium sp., Heterospathe intermedia (Becc.) Fernando, Hancea wenzeliana (Slik) S.E.C.Sierra, Kulju &amp; Welzen, Aquilaria cumingiana (Decne.) Ridl., Wallaceodendron celebicum Koord., Palaquium luzoniense (Fern.-Vill.) Vidal, Mastixia sp., Wrightia sp., Lubi-lubi, Kuyakya and Neonauclea formicaria (Elmer) Merr. The leaves, stems, fruits, and flowers are the most-commonly harvested plant parts in high-priority level species, most of which are primarily used for housing and construction. The identified plants were geotagged to intensify onsite protection. The findings are of extreme relevance in providing guidance to protected area staff, local people organizations, and community residents in embarking on urgent conservation action in conserving locally vulnerable biodiversity in order to sustain ecosystem services.

Ocean ecosystem services: modeling a factor development process to create sustainable value for decisions

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to model a process for moving toward sustainable ecosystem service decisions in a Coastal Biodiversity and discuss the directions of the process for decision-makers to apply in ocean ecosystem services.Design/methodology/approachAfter the development of theoretical approaches to understand their prospects for the future development of ecosystem services, the authors worked on a process for developing factors for sustainable decision-making. It uses the Delphi method to develop all the factors supported by six dimensions in two specific moments: deductive-inductive and inductive-deductive.FindingsThis process of modeling the factors expands the possibility of adaptive governance to make prior and subsequent decisions using factors related to dimensions, stakeholders and benefits, risks, opportunities and costs.Research limitations/implicationsConsidering the limitations, future studies could use another database to widen the view in terms of the studies, factors, dimensions and other additional information to maintain the evolution of this process in ocean ecosystem services decision-making. Another limitation arose in the number of projects and experts defining the factors. This may prevent the opportunity to have more impact in terms of future decisions if more sources are used in the market. In addition, time and the access to experts during this modeling process demonstrate a limitation, as does the time for feedback.Practical implicationsThis set of factors developed for adaptive governance decision-making can be applied to develop a prior alignment of stakeholder interests with sustainable practices.Social implicationsThis set of factors developed with the intervention of experts reinforces the importance of sustainable collective decisions on ocean ecosystem services. This is a joint approach with participants in the NextOcean project, sponsored by the European Commissions (EC)’s Horizon 2020 program. An Earth Observation-based Consortia aims to create sustainable value for Space, Land and Oceans.Originality/valueThis modeling process generated dimensions and factors to support adaptive governance stakeholders in making sustainable decisions in a coastal biodiversity zone.

Risks posed by invasive species to the provision of ecosystem services in Europe

Invasive species significantly impact biodiversity and ecosystem services, yet understanding these effects at large spatial scales remains a challenge. Our study addresses this gap by assessing the current and potential future risks posed by 94 invasive species to seven key ecosystem services in Europe. We demonstrate widespread potential impacts, particularly on outdoor recreation, habitat maintenance, crop provisioning, and soil and nitrogen retention. Exposure to invasive species was higher in areas with lower provision of ecosystem services, particularly for regulating and cultural services. Exposure was also high in areas where ecosystem contributions to crop provision and nitrogen retention were at their highest. Notably, regions vital for ecosystem services currently have low invasion suitability, but face an average 77% increase in potential invasion area. Here we show that, while high-value ecosystem service areas at the highest risk represent a small fraction of Europe (0-13%), they are disproportionally important for service conservation. Our study underscores the importance of monitoring and protecting these hotspots to align management strategies with international biodiversity targets, considering both invasion vulnerability and ecosystem service sustainability.

Gross ecosystem product accounting in Miyun County: the supply and use of ecosystem services

The ability of an ecosystem to provide services differs from its actual consumption and use by human society. Overuse of ecosystems can degrade ecosystems. In order to evaluate the supply capacity and use status of the ecosystem in Miyun County, so as to better apply the ecosystem services to different policies and management, the supply and use of 10 types of ecosystem services in Miyun County were calculated by using value indicators, namely potential gross ecosystem product (GEP) and actual gross ecosystem product. The results show that: (1) In 2020, potential gross ecosystem product of Miyun County is 254.32 billion yuan, and actual gross ecosystem product is 53.28 billion yuan, accounting for 21% of the potential gross ecosystem product. (2) Among all kinds of ecosystem services, the contribution of water conservation services in potential gross ecosystem product is the highest, and the contribution of climate regulation services in actual gross ecosystem product is the highest. (3) The contribution of wetland was the highest in potential gross ecosystem product, while the contribution of forest was the highest in actual gross ecosystem product. (4) Natural ecosystem area and vegetation coverage are the main factors affecting potential gross ecosystem product, while actual gross ecosystem product is mainly affected by GDP and population. (5) By studying the potential supply and actual use of ecosystem services, we evaluated and distinguished between the services that ecosystem could produce and the services that were actually used by humans, and compared the supply capacity and actual use to assess the sustainability of ecosystem services, in order to formulate different policies and management measures for gross ecosystem product surplus and deficit regions. Potential gross ecosystem product could provide data support for the assessment of ecological protection benefits. Actual gross ecosystem product could be included in the system of national accounts, and as a standard for ecological compensation and ecological trading. Confusing potential supply and actual use in policy application would affect the effect of policy implementation, and distinguishing them could ensure policy implementation. The relative size of the relationship between the two could reflect the present and future levels of human well-being in a region. Both together provided management basis and policy-making support for guiding regional ecological protection and sustainable development.

Public Perceptions on the Importance of Ecosystem Services From Vulnerable Forest: A Case Study of Ampang Forest Reserve, Selangor, Malaysia

Forest reserve gazettement affects the sustainability of forests by altering their ecological function and threatening human livelihood. This study examines a recently degazetted forest, using a survey among 120 local respondents living near Ampang Forest Reserve (AFR) in Selangor, Malaysia. The simple random sampling technique was implemented to reduce sampling bias, and descriptive and correlation statistics were used in the analysis. The study aims (i) to examine the public perceived importance of forest ecosystem services from AFR, (ii) to determine public awareness of a range of environmental threat levels towards AFR’s ecosystem services, and (iii) to assess public agreement on conservation measures that could increase protection and ensure the sustainability of ecosystem services from the remaining area of AFR. The result revealed all ecosystem services were perceived as important, and the public was mostly aware of the environmental threats. At the same time, conservation measures should be implemented to protect and ensure the sustainability of ecosystem services from AFR. This study provides insight into public perceptions of the importance of forest ecosystem services derived from vulnerable forest reserves. It indicates the relevance and need for better protection in high-risk forest areas as local livelihood depends on its significant ecological roles.

Adaptation measures to global change in the Serpis River Basin (Spain): An evaluation considering agricultural benefits, environmental flows, and invasive fishes

Damming and flow regulation ensure water availability during dearth periods, but they cause impacts on inhabiting biota and facilitate the establishment of Invasive Alien Species (IAS). Setting environmental flows (e-flows) has proven fundamental to ensure good ecological status of rivers, battle IAS, and sustain ecosystem services. However, ongoing climate change is further straining water resources availability and the fulfilment of e-flows in Spain, which has compelled River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) to include specific adaptation measures. In this study, we assessed adaptation strategies addressing land use and climate change in the Serpis River (Eastern Spain), based on increasing irrigation efficiency (i.e. moving from gravity to drip irrigation). The evaluation considered two CMIP6 climate change scenarios (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5) for two time horizons (short term 2015–2040 and mid-term 2041–2070), together with three land use change scenarios (changes in irrigated areas and technologies). Future estimations included reservoir flow releases, e-flows fulfilment, agricultural benefits, and changes in the suitable habitat and potential competition for two native (Eastern Iberian chub Squalius valentinus and European eel Anguilla anguilla) and two invasive (common bleak Alburnus alburnus and pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus) fish species. Predictions indicated a decrease in the suitable habitat for eel and Eastern Iberian chub, but the established e-flows will be ensured. Although the maximum benefits will rarely be achieved, on average the modernisation expected in the RBMP would sustain agricultural incomes in the optimistic scenario (SSP1-2.6) and for the short term of the pessimistic scenario (SSP5-8.5), showing similar effects than the ongoing redistribution of agricultural plots. Habitat and competition with invasive species will experience little changes due to the strong flow regulation, although the invasive bleak would prevail in the mid-term of the most pessimistic scenario. These results highlight the necessity of proactive adaptation measures beyond those described in the RBMPs (e.g. forest management or crop substitution) to increase water availability and sustain agricultural benefits, in particular for the most pessimistic scenario. They also underscore the difficulties to counteract invasive species through streamflow management under water scarcity scenarios.

Contributions of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems to risk-based design and management of protected and conserved areas in Africa.

Protected and conserved areas (PCAs) are key ecosystem management tools for conserving biodiversity and sustaining ecosystem services and social cobenefits. As countries adopt a 30% target for protection of land and sea under the Global Biodiversity Framework of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, a critical question emerging is, which 30%? A risk-based answer to this question is that the 30% that returns the greatest reductions in risks of species extinction and ecosystem collapse should be protected. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List protocols provide practical methods for assessing these risks. All species, including humans, depend on the integrity of ecosystems for their well-being and survival. Africa is strategically important for ecosystem management due to convergence of high ecosystem diversity, intense pressures, and high levels of human dependency on nature. We reviewed the outcomes (e.g., applications of ecosystem red-list assessments to protected-area design, conservation planning, and management) of a symposium at the inaugural African Protected Areas Congress convened to discuss roles of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems in the design and management of PCAs. Recent progress was made in ecosystem assessment, with 920 ecosystem types assessed against the IUCN Red List criteria across 21 countries. Although these ecosystems spanned a diversity of environments across the continent, the greatest thematic gaps were for freshwater, marine, and subterranean realms, and large geographic gaps existed in North Africa and parts of West and East Africa. Assessment projects were implemented by a diverse community of government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and researchers. The assessments have influenced policy and management by informing extensions to and management of formal protected area networks supporting decision-making for sustainable development, and informing ecosystem conservation and threat abatement within boundaries of PCAs and in surrounding landscapes and seascapes. We recommend further integration of risk assessments in environmental policy and enhanced investment in ecosystem red-list assessment to fill current gaps.

Assessing and predicting changes of ecosystem service values in response to land use/land cover dynamics in Ibb City, Yemen: a three-decade analysis and future outlook

ABSTRACT Assessing ecosystem services values (ESV) within land use/land cover (LULC) changes is crucial for promoting human well-being and sustainable development of regional ecosystems. Yet, the spatial relationship between LULC changes and ecosystem services is still unclear in Yemen. This study aimed to assess the impacts of LULC changes on ESV in Ibb City, over three decades (1990–2020), and to predict the ESV changes in 2050. The hybrid land use classification technique for classifying Landsat images, the CA-Markov model for LULC prediction, and the benefit transfer method (BTM) for assessment ESV were employed. Our findings revealed that there was a continuous increase in built-up areas and barren land, with a decrease in cultivated land and grassland, which are predicted to continue for the next 30 years. Consequently, the total ESV has decreased from US$ 68.5 × 106 in 1990 to US$ 65.2 × 106 in 2020 and is expected to further reduce to US$ 61.2 × 106 by 2050, reflecting the impact of urban expansion and socio-economic activities on ESV. The study provides insights for future ESV monitoring, which will contribute to the formulation of effective land-use strategies for more sustainable ecosystem services, particularly in rapidly urbanizing data-limited regions.

Response of ecosystem water-use efficiency to global vegetation greening

Global vegetation has been greening during the past two decades. However, relatively less is known concerning the change of carbon–water cycle coupling in response to vegetation greening. A key indicator that can characterize this coupling is water-use efficiency (WUE) of ecosystems. Therefore, we explored the impact of global vegetation greening on ecosystem WUE using Theil-Sen trend analysis, Mann-Kendall (M−K) test, stepwise regression and Lindeman Merenda Gold model (LMG) model based on the remote sensing data from 1982 to 2018. Our results showed that global vegetation greening had a positive effect on the gross primary productivity (GPP), evapotranspiration (ET) and WUE during the past thirty years. The WUE in 70 % of these vegetation greening areas, including India, China, Russia, Japan, North Korea, Europe and North America, was increased, and the WUE was increased by 0.002 g C kg H2O yr−1, which was twice as much as that of the global vegetation cover areas. Results of stepwise regression analysis showed that vegetation greening contributed 80 % of the changes in WUE, much higher than the contribution of the climate factors. GPP contributes approximately 81 % to the changes in WUE as a result of vegetation greening. In addition, we also found that, in the greening areas around the world, leaf area index (LAI) explained 80 % of the changes in WUE, and that vegetation has a positive effect WUE. Therefore, the WUE should be considered in the design of ecological restoration programs in the future, and vegetation of low water consumption would be favored to realize sustainable ecosystem services and regional development.
