Aeolian desert dust as a primary estuarine sediment source: Fine sediment transport and dynamics in the northern Arabian/Persian gulf

Fluvial discharge and freshwater runoff are recognized as the main sediment sources in many estuaries worldwide. Precipitation is, however, limited in arid and semi-arid areas, allowing for high aeolian dust activity, and inducing limited river runoff. As such, aeolian dust could contribute to the estuarine sediment sources in such areas. Uniquely, the Northern Arabian/Persian Gulf (NG) is continuously loaded with vast amounts of aeolian desert dust annually. This study focuses on the role of desert dust in the distribution of suspended sediment in the Northern Arabian/Persian Gulf (NG), employing in-situ measurements of physical parameters (collected in 2015–2016), satellite imagery, and a flexible mesh hydrodynamic model (Delft3D-FM) coupled with a sediment transport model (Delft-WAQ). The model showed reasonable performance in representing the complex system of NG. The study revealed that more than 90% of the sediment along the NG is aeolian dust, with the remaining being fluvial. Owing to salinity-induced density gradients, estuarine circulation keeps the fluvial sediment confined to the estuarine zone of the Shatt Al-Arab even during the events of increased freshwater discharges. In the NG most of the suspended sediments have an aeolian origin. They were found in shallow zones within the 5 m isobath, including the estuary of Shatt Al-Arab where they are mixed with the fluvial sediment fractions. Tides were found to play a key role in sediment mixing and horizontal dispersion in the shallow area of the NG most of the time, while the Shamal increased the transport of fine sediment to offshore areas (seaward). Based on current knowledge, this study represents a rare instance where estuarine sediment dynamics are primarily governed by aeolian deposits from a nearby desert.

Effect of hydrological variability on suspended sediment load at a river junction: a case study

Abstract Confluences act as crucial intersection in a fluvial system as they regulate the flow, sediment, and geomorphological stability. Two of the natural occurrences that have an effect on hydro-morphological processes that characterize the channel are sediment movement and stream discharge. However, assessments of suspended sediment distribution patterns across channel confluences and functions of tributaries on sediment transfer in downstream streams are still inadequately explored. To fulfil this, a year-long field investigation was conducted around river confluence at various time scales during the hydrological season. The bathymetry of the confluence was performed using digital echo-sounding equipment, electro-magnetic current meter, and differential global positioning equipment. This study uses in situ measurement and empirical techniques to quantify the spatiotemporal distribution of suspended sediment particles. Furthermore, Yang's formula was used to analyze the sediment concentration, and several statistical standards were employed to establish a differentiation between predicted and observed data. The results illustrated that a good agreement has been achieved among the calculated and measured statistics based on the correlation coefficient value. According to the findings, 8% fewer errors in the quantification of suspended sediment were induced in the tributary than in the main river because of the very low flow of the tributary. The present ramifications can help increase our database and understanding of the dynamics of major river confluences.

Numerical modeling of ocean currents and suspended sediment distribution in Benoa Bay, Bali

Benoa Bay is a semi-enclosed water body that includes a shallow estuary area that supports important aquatic ecosystems, including mangrove ecosystems, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. The reclamation of Benoa Harbor and the construction of a toll road in Benoa Bay are suspected to have increased sedimentation. The objective of this study is to model ocean currents and suspended sediment distribution during the Northwest and Southeast monsoons in the waters of Benoa Bay. Numerical models are used to describe the hydrodynamic process as the main driver of the process of pollutant movement in the waters. The current pattern resulting from the model in the waters of Benoa Bay has the same pattern in the Northwest and Southeast Monsoons, with the current velocity of the Northwest Monsoon ranging from 0 – 1.6583 m/s and the Southeast Monsoon ranging from 0 – 1.4729 m/s. The distribution of suspended sediment in the Northwest Monsoon is quite high compared to the Southeast Monsoon. The distribution of suspended sediment in the Northwest Monsoon ranges from 0 – 846 mg/L and in the Southeast Monsoon, it ranges from 0 – 598 mg/L.

Retrieval of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in the Arabian Gulf water of arid region by Sentinel-2 data

Suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in water increases temperature and turbidity, limits the photosynthesis of aquatic plants, and reduces biologically available oxygen. It is important to study SSC in the coastal waters of the Arabian Gulf. Thus, this study mapped the SSC of coastal water between Al Arish and Al Ghariyah in northern Qatar using the spectral bands of the MultiSpectral Imager (MSI) of Sentinel-2 by calculating the Normalized Difference Suspended Sediment Index and Normalized Suspended Material Index. The results are studied using the Normalized Difference Turbidity Index and Modified Normalized Difference Water Index. The mapping of SSC in the water using NDSSI showed the presence of a high concentration of suspended sediments between Al Arish and Al Mafjar and a low concentration between Al Mafjar and Al Ghariyah. The mapping of NSMI showed values between 0.012 (clear water) and 0.430 (more suspended material) for the occurrence of suspended materials and supported the results of NDSSI. The study of turbidity using an NDTI image showed turbidity index values ranging from −0.44 (clear water) to 0.12 (high turbidity) and confirmed the occurrence and distribution of suspended sediments and materials in the water. The MNDWI image was able to discriminate clear water with bright pixels from silty sand and mud flats. The relationships between NDSSI, NSMI, and NDTI were correlated with in-situ measurements and studied to find suitable indices to map SSC. Regression analyses showed the strongest relationship between NSMI and NDTI (R2 = 0.95) next to NDSSI and NDTI, where NDTI had the strongest effect on NDSSI (R2 = 0.86). The satellite data results were evaluated by studying the physical parameters and spatial distribution of suspended sediments in the surface and bottom waters. In addition, the grain size distributions, mineral identification, and chemical element concentrations in the bottom sediment samples were studied.

Characteristics of suspended sediment concentration and distribution of maximum coastal turbidity of the Mekong river

This paper presents the results of applying a 3D mathematical model to study the in the Mekong riverside area’s maximum turbidity zone (MTZ). This study has established and calibrated a three-dimensional system model with a combination of hydraulics-waves and suspended sediment transport with measured data in the study area. Based on the calculated scenarios for the flood and the dry seasons, the results show the occurrence of MTZs in the riparian zone of the Mekong river with typical suspended sediment concentrations ranging from 0.04–1.0 kg/m3 dry season and 0.2–1.1 kg/m3 flood season. The location and size of the MTZs change seasonally with the interaction between freshwater and tidal oscillations. They appear more in the dry season. At high tide, seawater with high salinity intrudes into estuaries with a range of up to 50 km, causing disturbance and flocculation. While in the flood season, the distribution of the largest turbidity has moved the floodplain with a range of about 20 km.

The Effect of Suspended Sediment Concentration on Acoustic Propagation Based on Satellite Data Inversion

Suspended sediment in seawater not only affects the optical properties of seawater, such as transparency and color, but it also greatly affects the process of underwater acoustic propagation. The underwater acoustic detection equipment is affected by the change in suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in use. To address this problem, this paper deeply investigates the correlation between the characteristic parameters of acoustic propagation and SSC in different types of water bodies. It identifies the statistical characteristics of the temporal and spatial distributions of SSC in the Chinese seas through quantitative inversion based on satellite remote sensing data. It further analyzes the relationship between the concentration and distribution of suspended sediment and the characteristics of acoustic propagation of underwater weapons and equipment. Finally, it quantitatively evaluates the effect of SSC on the acoustic attenuation coefficient. This study can provide valuable references for the functional departments and base-level units of naval forces to make decisions and strategies for using underwater acoustic detection equipment.

Analysis of water condition based on suspended sediment distribution and phytoplankton abundance in Lasolo Bay, Southeast Sulawesi Province

Lasolo Bay is a part of water in North Konawe Regency that connects the Lasolo River and sea waters. Several activities from Nickel mining activities that have been carried out around the bay have caused the physical condition of Lasolo Bay to change, namely an increase in turbidity and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in marine waters. TSS and phytoplankton are among the indicators for determining the level of productivity of water. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of TSS, nitrate and phosphate on phytoplankton abundance as an indicator of the level of aquatic productivity. The study was conducted in August 2021. Determination of sampling location based on purposive sampling method at 9 stations based on three layers of light penetration depth of 100%, 50% and 25% of surface light intensity. TSS analysis using gravimetric methods and phytoplankton abundance analysis using the Sedgwick Rafter Counting Chamber tool at the Biological Laboratory of FMIPA University of Halu Oleo. The results showed that TSS concentrations ranged from 160–390 mg/l and phytoplankton abundances at each station ranged from 1208–3040 cells/l. Increased TSS concentrations affect phytoplankton abundance. In general, high TSS values were at stations close to the mouth of the Lasolo river and high phytoplankton abundances were in the central part of Lasolo Bay. The abundance of phytoplankton in the waters of Lasolo Bay falls into the moderate category.

Suspended sediment distribution pattern using remote sensing techniques in the Sambas River of Sambas Regency

The Sambas River is part of the watershed of Sambas River which covers 71.03% of the total area of Sambas Regency. This river exhibits a mixed tidal regime with a tendency towards a double daily tide, which can cause sedimentation. Monitoring of this sedimentation can be conducted using remote sensing methods. The aim of this research is to analyze the concentration of suspended sediments based on direct measurements and appropriate algorithm processing. The data processing results from satellite images in 2022 using the Budhiman, Nurandani, and Lestari algorithms have a similar range of values to the direct measurements, ranging from 72 mg/L to 84 mg/L, although there are some data points that fall outside this range. However, the Budhiman algorithm demonstrates the best correlation with the direct measurements. The processed satellite data shows fluctuating values, indicating fluctuations in suspended sediment concentrations. Based on the conducted research, it is evident that the distribution pattern of suspended sediments in a river system can be analyzed using remote sensing techniques.Keywords: Remote Sensing; Suspended Sediment; Watershed

Suspended sediment transport generated by non-hydrostatic hydrodynamics in Northern Waters of Aceh, Indonesia

Suspended Sediment transport in the Northern Waters of Aceh is investigated in the domains between 5.4° - 5.65° N Latitude and 95.15° - 95.45° E. Therefore, this study aims to calculate the suspended sediment transport using a non-hydrostatic hydrodynamic model with an output distribution of total suspended sediment concentration. The model was run using tidal components of M2, S2, K1, O1, N2, K2, P1, Q1 and the wind every 6 h in February and August 2019 representing the North East and South West monsoons, as well as sea temperature and salinity data. The results of the model correlated with the Tide Model Driver data obtained, and the simulation results indicated the current in February 2019 is different than in August. The numerical simulation results show that the distribution of suspended sediments in Northern Waters of Aceh is driven by currents. Furthermore, the hydrodynamics and the designed model showed that the distribution value of the surface total suspended sediment concentration was lower in August than in February 2019. The verification results of the surface total suspended sediment concentration between the model and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite showed a good match. These results can facilitate the analysis of limited observation and remote sensing data.

Analytical Eddy Viscosity Model for Turbulent Wave Boundary Layers: Application to Suspended Sediment Concentrations over Wave Ripples

Turbulence related to flow oscillations near the seabed, in the wave bottom boundary layer (WBBL), is the phenomenon responsible for the suspension and transport of sediments. The vertical distribution of turbulent eddy viscosity within the WBBL is a key parameter that determines the vertical distribution of suspended sediments. For practical coastal engineering applications, the most used method to parameterize turbulence consists in specifying the shape of the one-dimensional-vertical (1DV) profile of eddy viscosity. Different empirical models have been proposed for the vertical variation of eddy viscosity in the WBBL. In this study, we consider the exponential-type profile, which was validated and calibrated by direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental data for turbulent channel and open-channel flows, respectively. This model is generalized to the WBBL, and the period-averaged eddy viscosity is calibrated by a two-equation baseline (BSL) k-ω model for different conditions. This model, together with a β-function (where β is the inverse of the turbulent Schmidt number), is used in modeling suspended sediment concentration (SSC) profiles over wave ripples, where field and laboratory measurements of SSC show two kinds of concentration profiles depending on grain particles size. Our study shows that the convection–diffusion equation, for SSC in WBBLs over sand ripples with an upward convection term, reverts to the classical advection–diffusion equation (ADE) with an “apparent” sediment diffusivity εs*=α εs related to the sediment diffusivity εs by an additional parameter α associated with the convective sediment entrainment process over sand ripples, which is defined by two equations. In the first, α depends on the relative importance of upward convection related to coherent vortex shedding and downward settling of sediments. When the convective transfer is very small, above low-steepness ripples, α≈1. In the second, α depends on the relative importance of coherent vortex shedding and random turbulence. When random turbulence is more important than coherent vortex shedding, α≈1, and “apparent” sediment diffusivity reverts to the classical sediment diffusivity εs*≈ εs. Comparisons with experimental data show that the proposed method allows a good description of both SSC for fine and coarse sand and “apparent” sediment diffusivity εs*.

Non-Fickian transport models for characterising the sediment suspension in unsteady flows

Non-Fickian transport of suspended sediment has been observed at field and laboratory scales. Such as turbulent bursting, resulting in complex dynamics for the sediment particles movement. The erosion and deposition of sediment have an impact on the hydraulic engineering and environment. This study makes an attempt to develop the variable-order fractional advection-diffusion equation (VOFADE) and variable-order Hausdorff fractal derivative advection-diffusion equation (VOHADE) models to describe the vertical distribution of suspended sediment in unsteady turbulent flows. From a classical viewpoint, the distribution of the concentration in sediment-laden flows is determined based on Fick?s first law. However, the vertical diffusion of suspended particles exhibits the non-locality/space scale dependency and history memory/time scale dependency properties due to turbulent bursting. Moreover, previous literatures have indicated that turbulence structure changes with the water depth. Hereby, we employ the space-dependent VOFADE and VOHADE models to describe the vertical diffusion of suspended sediment in unsteady flows, and further test its applicability with the experimental data. Numerical simulation results confirm that the VOFADE and VOHADE models give a better agreement with the experimental data and can well characterise the space-dependent anomalous transport. Hence, the models proposed by this study may help to provide a powerful mathematical physical model in the quantification of suspended sediment transport.

Estimate of uncertain cohesive suspended sediment deposition rate from uncertain floc size in Meghna estuary, Bangladesh

Suspended sediment in the Meghna estuary, Bangladesh, typically consists of fine to medium silt near the water surface, silty sand at increasing depth, and sandy silt close to the bed. The behavior of fine, cohesive sediment in a complex environment with multiple drivers, such as river and tidal flows, is comparatively little understood because the deposition and erosion processes depend on many chemical, biological, and physical factors. This article examines the propagation of uncertainty from input floc size to output sedimentation rate in the Meghna estuary, Bangladesh, using a fine-sediment hydro-morphodynamic model that utilizes the cohesive sediment transport module in Delft3D. We assume that sediment particles and flocs are both single-sized throughout the solution domain. The effect of uncertainty in floc size on output sediment transport statistics is examined at three sites of interest located in the Meghna estuary using a novel numerical derived distribution approach. After deriving the probability distribution of suspended cohesive sediment, we find the coefficient of variation to range from 20% to 38% across the three locations. Planners therefore need to consider substantial uncertainty in cohesive sediment transport estimates for the coastal zone of Bangladesh, especially given the increased risk of flooding in deposition-prone areas as they become shallower. The methodology may be readily extended to the estimation of uncertainty in land reclamation and erosion control planning studies.

Simulation of suspended sediment transport in a floating canopy channel based on random displacement model.

In conventional research, the suspended sediment distribution in a channel under the action of floating canopy has been rarely studied. In this study, experiments on sediment transport in flume with fixed suspended vegetation were carried out under different velocity conditions. It was performed to examine the suspended sediment transport and distribution law as impacted by the floating canopy. The vertical distribution formula of velocity impacted by the floating canopy was derived based on improved two-layer theory. Combined with the random displacement model (RDM), a Lagrangian method was developed to simulate the suspended sediment transport under the action of the floating canopy. Compared with the experimental data, the R2 of vertical velocity simulation was higher than 0.96, and the vertical distribution of suspended sediment concentration varied significantly (4.64 to 19.83 g/L) following the vertical coordinate. Subsequently, the numerical model of sandy flow with the floating canopy was established by complying with the stratified sediment turbulence diffusion coefficient to predict the suspended sediment transport. Besides, the established numerical model can lay a theory basis for sediment transport in such channels (floating canopy channels).

The spatio-temporal distribution and transport of suspended sediment in Laizhou Bay: Insights from hydrological and sedimentological investigations

Suspended sediment transport and deposition are crucial physical processes controlling the geomorphological evolution of estuaries and bays. Specially, under the context of worldwide coastal erosion, knowledge of the spatio-temporal distribution of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and its associated sediment load have become increasingly important for bay management. However, our understanding of the mechanisms of suspended sediment dynamics continues to be hampered by the lack of high-resolution observations. Here, we present a study of the transport mechanisms and controlling factors of suspended sediment over Laizhou Bay. For this, we conducted continuous measurements of SSC, salinity, temperature, and flow velocity at nine stations throughout Laizhou Bay for one 25-h period during each of the spring and moderate tides. Based on these data, residual current, gradient Richardson numbers, and suspended sediment flux were calculated. Our results indicate that a strong current field occurs near the Yellow River mouth, corresponding to the zone with high SSC. The overall diffusion characteristics of suspended sediment are controlled by the tidal current field. Furthermore, our findings suggest that different degrees of stratification occur in the water column, which inhibit the effective vertical diffusion of suspended sediment; Higher water temperature was the main cause of stronger water column stratification of spring tide than moderate tide. Finally, our results reveal that the type of seabed sediment is an important factor controlling SSC by influencing resuspension flux. We conclude that the primary mechanisms controlling suspended sediment transport in Laizhou Bay are advection and tidal pumping, especially advection. Our research provides both a foundational reference for the sediment source-to-sink process from the Yellow River to the sea, as well as guideline implications for coastal engineering construction and channel dredging.

Entrainment of bed sediment composed of very fine material

AbstractIn an estuary bed composed of very fine sediment material, tidal currents cause active sediment transportation, bar morphology changes, and severe bank erosion. However, it is difficult to evaluate the erosion rate of a sediment bed composed of particles measuring five to several tens of micrometres using methodologies found in the available literature that estimate entrainment in the presence of fine sediment suspension. This paper proposes a new method to evaluate the erosion rate of a sediment bed composed of very fine material by introducing the concept of entrainment developed for density stratified flows. A series of flume experiments were conducted to investigate the erosion rates of bed material with water–sediment mixtures of different concentrations, sediment particle sizes, and overall Richardson numbers. The results of the flume experiments are compared with past theories and experimental results conducted for density stratified flows. The data show that the erosion rate of a water–sediment mixture is proportional to the inverse of the overall Richardson number, as proposed in previous studies on density stratified flows. In cases with a strong cohesion, the erosion rate can be evaluated using a modified Richardson number, introduced to evaluate the influence of viscosity on entrainment rates. The applicability of the proposed method is also tested by comparing the results of the present study with those of previous studies in terms of equilibrium suspended sediment concentration and size distributions of suspended sediment. The present results show that the proposed method can be used to evaluate not only the erosion rate of suspended sediment but also the characteristics of equilibrium transport processes.

Spatial Trends and Drivers of Bedload and Suspended Sediment Fluxes in Global Rivers

AbstractBedload is notoriously challenging to measure and model; its dynamics, therefore, remains largely unknown in most fluvial systems worldwide. We present results from a global scale bedload flux model as part of the WBMsed modeling framework that well predict the distribution of water discharge, suspended sediment and bedload. The sensitivity of bedload predictions to river slope, particle size, discharge, river width, and suspended sediment were analyzed, showing the model to be most responsive to spatial dynamics in river discharge and slope. The relationship between bedload and total sediment flux is analyzed globally, and for representative longitudinal river profiles (Amazon, Mississippi, and Lena Rivers). The results show that while the proportion of bedload decreases from headwaters to the coasts, there is considerable variability between basins and along river corridors. The topographic and hydrological longitudinal profiles of rivers are shown to be the key drivers of bedload trends, with fluctuations in slope controlling its more local dynamics. Estimates of water and sediment fluxes to global oceans from 2,067 largest river outlets (draining 67% of the global continental area) are provided. Estimated water discharge at 30,579 km3/y corresponds well to past estimates; however, sediment flux is higher. Total global particulate load of 17.8 Gt/y is delivered to global oceans, 14.8 Gt/y as washload, 1.1 Gt/y as bedload, and 2.6 Gt/y as suspended bed material. The largest 25 rivers are predicted to transport more than half of the total sediment flux to global oceans.

Hydrodynamics and water quality impacts of large-scale reclamation projects in the Pearl River Estuary

The mechanism that underlies the evolution of the seasonal environment and the effects of reclamation projects in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were studied by modeling the hydrodynamics, suspended sediment, and water quality. Due to the seasonal variation of the freshwater discharge, the residual currents in the estuary are generally larger during the summer than during the winter. Reclamation projects significantly affect the residual current fields and decrease tidal prisms across the PRE, resulting in the variation of water exchange and material transport process. During the summer, waters high in chlorophyll-a move downstream, with increased seaward residual currents, and they more widely range from the middle estuary to the estuarine mouth than during the winter; moreover, the chlorophyll-a value peaks in these areas. Reclamation projects significantly promote the expansion of waters high in chlorophyll-a towards the estuarine mouth. The distribution of suspended sediment, nitrate, ammonium, and silicate also obviously varies with altered water exchange and chlorophyll-a distribution. Average chlorophyll-a, suspended sediment, and silicate concentrations in the whole computational domain increase by 12.71%, 15.19%, and 1.91%, respectively, while the growth of algae consumes a large amount of nitrate and ammonium.

ADCP Observations of Currents and Suspended Sediment in the Macrotidal Gulf of Martaban, Myanmar

The Ayeyarwady and Thanlwin Rivers, which drain Myanmar, together form one of the largest point sources of freshwater and sediment to the global ocean. Combined, these rivers annually deliver an estimated 485 Mt of sediment to the northern Andaman Sea. This sediment contributes to a perennially muddy zone within the macro-tidal Gulf of Martaban, but little is known about the processes that dominate dispersal and trapping of sediment there, as very few water column observations are available. A research cruise in December 2017 provided a rare opportunity to obtain Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data along transects from the Gulf of Martaban and adjacent continental shelf. Two transects were obtained from the outer portion of the Gulf of Martaban in water depths that ranged from about 20–35 m. These showed very fast currents, especially during flood tide conditions, exceeding 1.5 m/s. The backscatter record from the ADCP indicated asymmetries in distribution of suspended sediment during the ebb versus flood phase of the tide. During ebb tidal conditions, the backscatter record indicated that sediment was transported in either a surface advected layer, or fairly well-mixed throughout the water column. In contrast, during flood tidal conditions, sediment was confined to the bottom boundary layer, even though the velocities were faster during flood than the ebb conditions. The vertical structure of the currents during flood tide conditions indicated the presence of sediment–induced stratification because currents within the near-bed turbid layers were relatively slow, but speeds increased markedly above these layers. This albeit limited dataset provides an exciting glimpse into the dynamics of sediment transport within the muddy, macrotidal Gulf of Martaban, and implies the importance of tidal straining and bottom nepheloid layer formation there.

Hyperspectral retrievals of suspended sediment using cluster-based machine learning regression in shallow waters

Remote sensing of suspended sediment in shallow waters is challenging because of the increased optical variability of the water, resulting from the influence of suspended matter in the water column and the heterogeneous bottom properties. To overcome this limitation, in this study, we developed a novel framework called cluster-based machine learning regression for optical variability (CMR-OV), using the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) clustering technique and a random forest regressor (RFR). We evaluated the model using an optically complex dataset from a field-scale experiment. This experiment was conducted with four sediment types injected into an experimental meandering channel divided into two reaches with submerged vegetation and a natural sand bottom. We obtained high-resolution hyperspectral images using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and measured the in situ suspended sediment concentration using laser diffraction sensors. Based on optical similarity, we used CMR-OV to divide the hyperspectral dataset into several clusters. Then, we built separate RFR models for each cluster using the corresponding spectral bands that were selected using recursive feature elimination (RFE). Thus, we found that the proposed CMR-OV yielded superior results compared to the conventional RFR model, decreasing the total error score by 10.81%. The optical spectral bands of each cluster were distinguished from each other, indicating that the datasets that were spectrally discriminated from clustering enhanced the performance of the estimator. By comparing the clustered spectral dataset and physical factors, we proved the bottom type was the most critical factor in separating the clusters, even though the variability in the sediment properties also induced substantial spectral changes. Our findings demonstrated that CMR-OV accurately reproduced the spatiotemporal distribution of suspended sediment under optically complex conditions by addressing the heterogeneity of bottom reflectance in shallow water.

Influence of sediment sources, water mass, and physical processes on the dynamics of flocs at a location between the mouth of a river and the head of a submarine canyon

A field experiment was conducted in the summer of 2011 to obtain detailed process–response data to understand the dynamics of suspended sediment off the Gaoping River mouth near the head of the Gaoping Submarine Canyon in Southern Taiwan. An instrumented tetrapod and a collocated floating platform were used to record the temperature, salinity, current and wave fields. Additionally, the volume concentration (VC) and mass concentration (SSC) of suspended sediments were recorded. Temperature and salinity signals over a tidal cycle distinguished water masses originating from the river plume and the canyon, which alternately dominated the surface dynamics of suspended sediment at the study area. Terrestrial–sourced suspended sediments aggregated into larger flocs, characterized by high VC, SSC, and low effective density values. Conversely, marine–sourced suspended sediments generally had smaller grain sizes, characterized by lower VC, SSC, and high effective densities. In the surface water, the effective density of suspended sediments decreased exponentially with size. In the bottom water, values of VC and SSC were higher under energetic wave conditions and lower under nonenergetic wave conditions, whereas mean size of suspended sediments showed an opposite trend. The hydrodynamics also affected the sediment–water interface, which was reflected in the grain size composition of surficial sediments. The silt and clay content on the seabed was lower under energetic wave conditions and higher under nonenergetic conditions. According to process–responses characteristics, suspended sediments in the bottom water were associated with two regimes: smaller mean size with lower effective densities formed under energetic wave conditions and larger mean size with higher effective densities formed under nonenergetic wave conditions. In the former regime, waves–induced turbulence dominated suspended sediment dynamics by entraining seafloor sediments into the bottom water and aggregating them into microflocs (<~125 μm) and macroflocs (> ~ 125 μm). However, the size distribution of suspended sediment showed a bimodal distribution, and the larger peak is close to the Kolmogorov microscale (around 250 μm). It suggests that strong turbulence associated with significant sediment suspension and flocculation also resulted in disaggregation of macroflocs. As the wave energy dissipated, most of suspended sediments including all fine ones were removed from the bottom water, via flocculation and deposition. Under nonenergetic wave conditions, suspended sediments in the bottom water were contributed from upcanyon water and river plumes, controlled by semidiurnal tidal currents. The size distributions of suspended sediment under nonenergetic conditions were mostly unimodal, with peaks around 100–300 μm, less than the Kolmogorov microscales of turbulence flow (350 μm). Therefore, it could be concluded that turbulence strength plays a key role in flocculation of suspended sediment in the bottom water.
