Surface matters: A case study of the scale and impact of oxide surfaces via orbital polarization

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit a broad spectrum of functional electronic, magnetic, and optical properties, making them attractive for various technological applications. The scale and impact of surface defects and inhomogeneity can extend many unit cells below the surface. Overlooking this aspect of TMO surfaces can result in an incorrect interpretation of their physics and inhibit their maturation into device technology. Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a common technique for TMO studies, and different XAS acquisition modes can be used to measure different depth regimes in the sample. Here, we demonstrate a substantial disparity between the near-surface region and the “bulk” of the prototypical TMO SrVO3. By driving the system across two scenarios of orbital polarization, we illustrate how a common XAS surface-sensitive acquisition technique fails to detect the intrinsic orbital polarization. By stark contrast, a “bulk”-sensitive technique successfully captures this effect, elucidating the expected orbital occupation inversion. These results not only underscore the impact of the near-surface region on the correct interpretation of TMO fundamental physics, but further highlight the scale of surface inhomogeneity, a critical aspect of nanoscale functional devices.

Unveiling the mechanism of alkali etched CuMn2O4-δ spinel catalysis enhance for acetone catalytic Oxidation: The roles of Metal-Oxygen bond and oxygen defect site

Spinel is a powerful non-precious metal oxide catalyst that can be used to catalyze the combustion of volatile organic pollutants, potentially replacing precious metal catalysts. To enhance the catalytic activity and stability of CuMn2O4, we constructed gradient distribution of oxygen vacancies (Vo) on the CuMn2O4-δ surface utilizing alkali treatment method. Alkali treatment dissolves some of the Cu atoms of the CuMn2O4 catalyst, leading to the transformation of part of the Mn-O-Cu structure into the Mn-O structure, which was results in the lengthening of the Mn-O bond and the production of cation defects. The Mn-O bond breaks, releasing a large amount of reactive oxygen and forming oxygen vacancies. Highly reactive lattice oxygen and cation defects is more likely to participate in oxidation reactions. In the catalytic combustion of acetone, the alkali-treated catalyst showed high activity and stability, and the oxidation rate of acetone at 170 °C was increased by 2.86 times. Particularly, the alkali treatment catalysts can convert acetone that has been adsorbed into acetic acid and formic acid using catalyst lattice oxygen in anoxic environment. In the presence of an oxygen stream, the acetic and formic acids underwent direct oxidation, resulting in the formation of water and carbon dioxide. This work promotes the development of oxygen vacancy engineering on the surface of transition metal oxides and provides a new approach to improve the activity and stability of CuMn2O4 in real environments.

Unveiling diverse coordination-defined electronic structures of reconstructed anatase TiO2(001)-(1 × 4) surface

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit fascinating physicochemical properties, which originate from the diverse coordination structures between the transition metal and oxygen atoms. Accurate determination of such structure-property relationships of TMOs requires to correlate structural and electronic properties by capturing the global parameters with high resolution in energy, real, and momentum spaces, but it is still challenging. Herein, we report the determination of characteristic electronic structures from diverse coordination environments on the prototypical anatase-TiO2(001) with (1 × 4) reconstruction, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy/atomic force microscopy, in combination with density functional theory calculation. We unveil that the shifted positions of O 2s and 2p levels and the gap-state Ti 3p levels can sensitively characterize the O and Ti coordination environments in the (1 × 4) reconstructed surface, which show distinguishable features from those in bulk. Our findings provide a paradigm to interrogate the intricate reconstruction-relevant properties in many other TMO surfaces.

Remarkable enhancement of the adsorption and diffusion performance of alkali ions in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal oxide monolayers via Ru-doping

Transition metal oxides (TMO) are the preferred materials for metal ion battery cathodes because of their high redox potentials and good metal-ion intercalation capacity, which serve as an outstanding replacement for layered sulphide. The adsorption of alkali ions (Li, Na) to the surface of TMOs is strengthened by Ru-atom doping. The open circuit voltage (OCV) also increases due to the high adsorption capacity of doped Monolayers. Ru doping makes the semiconducting TMOs conduct, which is suitable for battery application. As alkali ion moves closer to the dopant site, the adsorption energy increases. When alkali ions are close to the vicinity of doping site, their diffusion barrier decrease and rises as they go further away. Our current findings will be useful in finding ways to improve the storage performance of 2D oxide materials for application in energy harvesting and green energy architecture.

The Metal-Oxide Nanoparticle-Aqueous Solution Interface Studied by Liquid-Microjet Photoemission.

ConspectusThe liquid-microjet technique combined with soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has become an exceptionally powerful experimental tool to investigate the electronic structure of liquid water and nonaqueous solvents and solutes, including nanoparticle (NP) suspensions, since its first implementation at the BESSY II synchrotron radiation facility 20 years ago. This Account focuses on NPs dispersed in water, offering a unique opportunity to access the solid-electrolyte interface for identifying interfacial species by their characteristic photoelectron spectral fingerprints. Generally, the applicability of PES to a solid-water interface is hampered due to the small mean free path of the photoelectrons in solution. Several approaches have been developed for the electrode-water system and will be reviewed briefly. The situation is different for the NP-water system. Our experiments imply that the transition-metal oxide (TMO) NPs used in our studies reside close enough to the solution-vacuum interface that electrons emitted from the NP-solution interface (and from the NP interior) can be detected.We were specifically exploring aqueous-phase TMO NPs that have a high potential for (photo)electrocatalytic applications, e.g., for solar fuel generation. The central question we address here is how H2O molecules interact with the respective TMO NP surface. Liquid-microjet PES experiments, performed from hematite (α-Fe2O3, iron(III) oxide) and anatase (TiO2, titanium(IV) oxide) NPs dispersed in aqueous solutions, exhibit sufficient sensitity to distinguish between free bulk-solution water molecules and those adsorbed at the NP surface. Moreover, hydroxyl species resulting from dissociative water adsorption can be identified in the photoemission spectra. An important aspect is that in the NP(aq) system the TMO surface is in contact with a true extended bulk electrolyte solution rather than with a few monolayers of water, as is the case in experiments using single-crystal samples. This has a decisive effect on the interfacial processes that can occur since NP-water interactions can be uniquely investigated as a function of pH and provides an environment allowing for unhindered proton migration. Our studies confirm that water is dissociatively adsorbed at the hematite surface and molecularly adsorbed at the TiO2 NP surface at low pH. In contrast, at near-basic pH the water interaction is dissociative at the TiO2 NP surface.The liquid-microjet measurements presented here also highlight the multiple aspects of photoemission necessary for a full characterization of TMO nanoparticle surfaces in aqueous environments. For instance, we exploit the ability to increase species-specific electron signals via resonant photoemission, so-called partial electron yield X-ray absorption (PEY-XA) spectra, and from valence photoelectron and resonant Auger-electron spectra. We also address the potential of these resonance processes and the associated ultrafast electronic relaxations for determining charge transfer or electron delocalization times, e.g., from Fe3+ located at the hematite nanoparticle interface into the aqueous-solution environment.

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer at the Surface of Polyoxovanadate-Alkoxide Clusters.

ConspectusProton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is a fundamental process involved in all areas of chemistry, with relevance to biological transformations, catalysis, and emergent energy storage and conversion technologies. Early observations of PCET were reported by Meyer and co-workers in 1981 while investigating the proton dependence of reduction of a molecular ruthenium oxo complex. Since that time, this conceptual framework has grown to encompass an enormous scope of charge transfer and compensation reactions. In this Account, we will discuss ongoing efforts in the Matson Laboratory to understand the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics of PCET processes at the surface of a series of Lindqvist-type polyoxovanadate clusters. This project aims to provide atomistic resolution of net H atom uptake and transfer at the surfaces of transition-metal oxide materials.First, we discuss our efforts aimed at understanding PCET at metal oxide surfaces using the Lindqvist-type polyoxovanadate-alkoxide (POV-alkoxide) cluster [nBu4N]2[V6O13(TRIOLNO2)2]. These clusters reversibly bind H atom equivalents at bridging oxide sites, mirroring the proposed uptake and release of e-/H+ pairs at transition-metal oxide surfaces. Summarized results include the measurement of bond dissociation free energies of surface hydroxide moieties (BDFE(O-H)) as well as mechanistic analyses that verify concerted proton electron transfer as the operative pathway for PCET at the surface of POV-alkoxide clusters.Next, we discuss net proton and H atom uptake at the surface of reduced variants of the Lindqvist-type POV-alkoxide cluster, [V6O7(OR)12]n (R = Me, Et; n = -2, -1, 0, + 1). In the case of these low-valent POV-alkoxide clusters, nucleophilic bridging sites are kinetically inhibited by functionalization of the cluster surface with organic ligands. This molecular modification enables site-selectivity in proton and H atom uptake to terminal oxide sites. The impact of reaction site and cluster electronics on reaction driving force of PCET is explored, with core electron density playing a critical role in dictating thermodynamics of H atom uptake and transfer. Additional work described here contrasts the kinetics of PCET at terminal oxide sites to the reactivity observed at bridging oxides in POV-alkoxide clusters.Overall, this Account summarizes our foundational knowledge regarding the assessment of PCET reactivity at the surfaces of molecular metal oxides. Drawing analogies between POV-alkoxide clusters and nanoscopic metal oxide materials provide design principles for the advancement of materials applications with atomic precision. These complexes are additionally highlighted as tunable redox mediators in their own right; our studies demonstrate how cluster surface reactivities can be optimized by modifying electronic structure and surface functionalities.

Assessing and Quantifying Thermodynamically Concomitant Degradation during Oxygen Evolution from Water on SrTiO3

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) from water, while more stable on transition metal oxide surfaces than others, has nonetheless proved to be concomitant with charge-induced surface degradation. Since heterogeneous and nanostructured electrodes are often used and with a large excitation area, the degradation can be difficult to quantify. Here, we utilize single crystalline SrTiO3, highly efficient photoexcitation of the OER, and a focused laser to spatially define the degradation. A repetitive, ultrafast laser pulse above the band gap energy is employed, which allows for highly varied exposure of the surface using different scan methods. It also connects the work to the OER and its time-resolved mechanisms. By characterizing the degradation using optical spectroscopy and electron microscopy, the material dissolution constitutes an upper bound of 6% of the charge passed in a pH 13 electrolyte, while for pH 7, it reaches 23%; the pH dependence is anticorrelated with the ultrafast population of trapped charge. Although a minority component, the remarkable consistency of the 6% upper bound in the pH 13 electrolyte across a large range of linearly increasing degradation volumes and changing electrode composition defines a dominant lattice dissolution reaction as thermodynamically concomitant with the OER. Along with the pH dependence, the elemental composition of the degraded layer quantified by energy-dispersive and photoelectron and absorption X-ray spectroscopy suggests the relevance of certain chemical cation redeposition reactions. Altogether, using spatially and temporally defined photoexcitation of a crystalline surface provides a means to quantify semiconducting transition metal oxide degradation during the OER and constricts its mechanisms.

Synergistic catalysis of mesoporous Cu/Co3O4 and surface oxygen vacancy for CO2 fixation to carbamates

As one of the most important defects, oxygen vacancy (OV) on the surface of transition metal oxides can function as catalytic reactive site for various reactions. Herein, Cu-doped Co3O4 (Cu/Co3O4) catalyst with rich surface OV was developed for efficient and quantitative transformations of CO2, primary amines, and propargyl alcohols to oxazolidinones at mild reaction conditions. Both initial formation rate of oxazolidinone and surface acidity on the Cu/Co3O4 increased with its surface OV concentration. The doped Cu species in Cu/Co3O4 functioned as an active site for propargyl alcohol activation, enhanced the surface OV concentration for CO2 activation, and improved the surface acidity to promote the rate-determining step in CO2-to-oxazolidinone transformation. In addition to oxazolidinones, Cu/Co3O4 was applicable to various β-oxopropylcarbamates syntheses by coupling CO2, propargyl alcohols and secondary amines. This research demonstrates a synergistic cooperative catalysis between Cu and surface OV for CO2 transformation to high-valuable N-containing chemicals.

Electrochemical CO2reduction towards formic acid and methanol on transition metal oxide surfaces as a function of CO coverage

Determining surface-specific Hubbard-U corrections and identifying key adsorbates on nickel and cobalt oxide catalyst surfaces.

NiO is a popular transition metal oxide (TMO) with high thermal and chemical stability and Co3O4 is a relatively more reducible TMO due to weaker metal-oxygen bonds. Both are often used as catalysts in a variety of chemical transformations. Density functional theory (DFT) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are used to investigate catalysis on TMO surfaces, yet both techniques have their own limitations. The accuracy of DFT highly depends on the choice of Hubbard U correction. The bulk-property optimized U value of 5.3 eV for NiO and different U values for Co3O4, without any consensus, are often used in the literature to simulate surface catalysis. However, U values optimized using bulk properties often fail to reproduce surface-adsorbate interactions on TMOs. Similarly, there exists arbitrariness in assigning observed XPS shifts to different surface species on these metal oxides. Hence, a synergistic application of XPS and DFT+U is implemented to determine the surface specific U values for NiO and Co3O4, and to identify adsorbed surface moieties corresponding to experimentally observed XPS shifts. For the NiO (100) surface, the U value of ∼2 eV is able to reproduce the experimentally observed XPS O1s core level binding energy shifts correctly, instead of the bulk property optimized and commonly used U value of 5.3 eV. Using this surface specific U value of 2 eV, the experimentally observed XPS shifts are assigned. Similarly, for Co3O4 (100) surface, ∼3 eV of U value could successfully predict the experimentally observed XPS shifts and corresponding adsorbates. The surface adsorbates and configurations suggested in this work will help analyze experimental XPS data and the surface specific U values will ensure accurate predictions of adsorption and reaction energetics on these catalysts.

Cobalt nitride nanocrystals coated separator as multifunctional interlayer for improving polysulfides regulation

Using transition metal oxides to inhibit the shuttle effect of soluble polysulfides is one of the effective ways to improve the cycling capacity of Li–S batteries. However, due to their unsatisfactory electrical conductivity, the redox reactions of polysulfides adsorbed on transition metal oxide surface cannot occur in time and completely, thus increasing the electrode polarization. Herein, highly conductive Co4N nanocrystals were prepared and successfully used for separator modification of sulfur cathode. As an efficient intermediate layer, Co4N-Celgard not only effectively inhibited the diffusion and shuttle of polysulfides, but also promoted the corresponding conversion reactions due to its high catalytic activity and electrical conductivity, avoiding the ineffective accumulation of lithium polysulfides. Meanwhile, Co4N nanocrystals had good electrolyte affinity, which could effectively improve electrode dynamics. Based on the above advantages, Li–S cell with Co4N-Celgard separator exhibited high rate performance of 626 mA h g−1 at 4 C and low decay rate of 0.089 % per cycle.

Hard x-ray angle-resolved photoemission from a buried high-mobility electron system

Novel two-dimensional electron systems at the interfaces and surfaces of transition-metal oxides recently have attracted much attention as they display tunable, intriguing properties that can be exploited in future electronic devices. Here we show that a high-mobility quasi-two-dimensional electron system with strong spin-orbit coupling can be induced at the surface of a KTaO$_3$ (001) crystal by pulsed laser deposition of a disordered LaAlO$_3$ film. The momentum-resolved electronic structure of the buried electron system is mapped out by hard x-ray angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. From a comparison to calculations it is found that the band structure deviates from that of electron-doped bulk KTaO$_3$ due to the confinement to the interface. Nevertheless, the Fermi surface appears to be clearly three-dimensional. From the $k$ broadening of the Fermi surface and core-level depth profiling we estimate the extension of the electron system to be at least 1 nm but not much larger than 2 nm, respectively.

Pristine Surface of Ni-Rich Layered Transition Metal Oxides as a Premise of Surface Reactivity.

The surface reactivity of Ni-rich layered transition metal oxides is instrumental to the performance of batteries based on these positive electrode materials. Most often, strong surface modifications are detailed with respect to a supposed ideal initial state. Here, we study the LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode material in its pristine state, hence before any contact with electrolyte or cycling, thanks to advanced microscopy and spectroscopy techniques to fully characterize its surface down to the nanometer scale. Scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SS-NMR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are combined and correlated in an innovative manner. The results demonstrate that in usual storage conditions after synthesis, the extreme surface is already chemically different from the nominal values. In particular, nickel is found in a reduced state compared to the bulk value, and a Mn enrichment is determined in the first few nanometers of primary particles. Further exposition to humid air allows for quantifying the formed lithiated species per gram of active material, identifying their repartition and proposing a reaction path in relation with the instability of the surface.

Evidence of a 2D Electron Gas in a Single-Unit-Cell of Anatase TiO2 (001).

The formation and the evolution of electronic metallic states localized at the surface, commonly termed 2D electron gas (2DEG), represents a peculiar phenomenon occurring at the surface and interface of many transition metal oxides (TMO). Among TMO, titanium dioxide (TiO2), particularly in its anatase polymorph, stands as a prototypical system for the development of novel applications related to renewable energy, devices and sensors, where understanding the carrier dynamics is of utmost importance. In this study, angle‐resolved photo‐electron spectroscopy (ARPES) and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) are used, supported by density functional theory (DFT), to follow the formation and the evolution of the 2DEG in TiO2 thin films. Unlike other TMO systems, it is revealed that, once the anatase fingerprint is present, the 2DEG in TiO2 is robust and stable down to a single‐unit‐cell, and that the electron filling of the 2DEG increases with thickness and eventually saturates. These results prove that no critical thickness triggers the occurrence of the 2DEG in anatase TiO2 and give insight in formation mechanism of electronic states at the surface of TMO.

Investigation of the electrocatalytic mechanisms of urea oxidation reaction on the surface of transition metal oxides

Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) has been widely considered as an alternative anodic reaction to water oxidation for the green production of hydrogen fuel. Due to the high catalytic activity of transition metal oxides towards UOR, various strategies have been developed to improve their syntheses and catalytic properties. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms of UOR on catalyst surface. In this work, three transition metal oxides, including NiO, Co3O4, and Fe2O3 are investigated as model catalysts. Through analyzing the electrochemical properties by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and operando Raman spectroscopy, it is revealed that NiO has a unique high catalytic activity towards UOR due to simultaneous formation of a thin layer of oxyhydroxide species above 1.40 V vs. RHE in alkaline media. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations further suggest that the adsorption of urea molecules is largely affected by surface interactions resulting in different space configurations, which impose large influences on the consecutive deprotonation and NN formation processes. Overall, results of this work point to the subtle adsorption − kinetics relationship in UOR and highlight the importance of the interfacial electronic interactions on catalyst surface.

Eliminating Delocalization Error to Improve Heterogeneous Catalysis Predictions with Molecular DFT + U

Approximate semilocal density functional theory (DFT) is known to underestimate surface formation energies yet paradoxically overbind adsorbates on catalytic transition-metal oxide surfaces due to delocalization error. The low-cost DFT + U approach only improves surface formation energies for early transition-metal oxides or adsorption energies for late transition-metal oxides. In this work, we demonstrate that this inefficacy arises due to the conventional usage of metal-centered atomic orbitals as projectors within DFT + U. We analyze electron density rearrangement during surface formation and O atom adsorption on rutile transition-metal oxides to highlight that a standard DFT + U correction fails to tune properties when the corresponding density rearrangement is highly delocalized across both metal and oxygen sites. To improve both surface properties simultaneously while retaining the simplicity of a single-site DFT + U correction, we systematically construct multi-atom-centered molecular-orbital-like projectors for DFT + U. We demonstrate this molecular DFT + U approach for tuning adsorption energies and surface formation energies of minimal two-dimensional models of representative early (i.e., TiO2) and late (i.e., PtO2) transition-metal oxides. Molecular DFT + U simultaneously corrects adsorption energies and surface formation energies of multilayer models of rutile TiO2(110) and PtO2(110) to resolve the paradoxical description of surface stability and surface reactivity of semilocal DFT.

Reduction Reactions of CO2 on Rutile TiO2 (110) Nanosheet via Coordination Activation

Based on the previous coordination catalysis theory, the active site on the surface of transition metal oxides can activate the CO2 molecule. Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) rutile TiO2 nanosheet with (110) crystal face as the main exposed surface has many active sites of Ti3+ and O vacancy, which have some synergistic effects to greatly reduce the dissociation energy of CO2. Following previous assumptions, four possible reduction processes of CO2 on rutile TiO2 (110) surface were systematically assessed by density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The reduction reactions of CO2 along I faces difficultly in proceeding due to the relatively weak interaction between CO2 and the active surface. Additionally, along III, the adsorption configuration of CO2 in the pristine state has huge distinctions with the model that suggests that the defined route is unlikely to occur on the rutile TiO2 (110) surface. However, through carefully comparing the energy differences as well as transition state searching, the reduction reaction along II has a high probability of finishing and finally generating HCOOH on the surface owing to the minimal energy differences and low activation barrier. Furthermore, the reduction reaction of CO2 to CH4 guided along IV is predicted to more easily take place with the assistance of O vacancy on the active surface. The synergistic action among Ti3+ site, O vacancy, and H+ can aid in fixing molecular CO2 by breaking the strong bond of C=O in CO2 and generating different fuels via coordination activation. This work will not only provide strong theoretical support to previous assumptions but can also lighten the routes to explore more active catalysis towards the reduction of CO2.

Surface Atomic Decoration of a Manganite to a Modulable Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Aiming at the fundamental understanding of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in epitaxial perovskite transition metal oxide (TMO) thin films, we evaluate the surface decoration conditions, including lattice orientation and surface morphology, of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) related to its modulable OER performance. The LSMOs with orientations of (001), (110), and, (111) exhibit different OER activities owing to the discrepant surface density of Mn. Furthermore, tuning of the surface atomic terrace width of LSMO shows a more efficient path to modulate the OER performance by introducing a high-valence Mn state owing to the surface dangling bonds of LSMO. As the electrochemical process is dominated by the interface of the TMO surface and electrolyte, our investigation can approach the fundamental understanding of a perovskite-type TMO surface state and its OER performance while highlighting the role of the nonbulk electron state in a promising TMO electrocatalyst in abundant electrochemical processes.

Novel P2-Type Na0.66Fe0.5-2xMn0.5TixVxO2 Cathode for High-Capacity

Necessity of energy storage and battery production is soaring up day by day due to the growth of portable electronic devices and surging evolution of electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in-hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and renewables. Lithium-ion battery (LIB) technology has been the primary choice for such applications due to its high-energy-density, high-stability, and longer cycle life. Albeit with all merits of LIB, the prime concern has been the scarcity of lithium in earth’s crust and depletion of lithium reserve due to its wide usage in batteries, resulting in a higher production cost. This has prompted battery researchers to search for new alternatives to LIB for energy storage applications. Sodium, in this respect, can be a viable solution as it is the sixth most abundant element and shares the same group with lithium in the periodic table. Sodium has similar structural and electrochemical working mechanisms of lithium. The pivotal factors hindering the deployment of the laboratory-based sodium-ion battery (SIB) technologies into the commercial energy storage market are low energy density compared to that of LIB, lower stability, lower ion-transport mechanism, and lower operating voltage. Improvement of overall electrochemical performance of cathode materials can be a game-changer as it affects the energy density, lifespan, and tolerance of batteries. In this research, a cobalt-free novel P2-type transition metal cathode Na0.66Fe0.5-2xMn0.5TixVxO2 was synthesized by doping NaFeMnO2 with vanadium and titanium for SIB battery applications. The cathode was synthesized based on a sol-gel reaction where citric acid was used as a chelating agent. A set of physicochemical analysis, including Field-Effect Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDAX) analysis, as well as electrochemical analysis like Cyclic Voltammetry and Galvanometric Charge/ Discharge were performed to understand the correspondence between layered transition metal oxide chemistry, surface morphology and electrochemical competence of the new material. The crystal structures of the pristine material and cathodes containing different percentages of doped vanadium and titanium were examined and lattice parameters were refined through X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld analysis. These exhaustive structural and morphological comparisons were performed between the pristine and modified NaFeMnO2 (NFM) cathode structures, which provided insights on the effects of vanadium and titanium doping on stabilizing surface structures, reducing Jahn-Teller distortion, enhancing stability and capacity retention and promoting Na+ carrier transport mechanism.
