Fe3O4@SiO2@CSH+VO3− as a novel recyclable heterogeneous catalyst with core–shell structure for oxidation of sulfides

Iron nanoparticles, with low toxicity and many active sites, are among the materials that not only reduce waste along with green chemistry but also increase the separation power and recover the catalyst from the reaction environment. In this study, first, the surface of iron nanoparticles was silanized, and in the next step, the complex of chitosan HCl.VO3 was placed on the surface of Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@SiO2@CSH+VO3−). This nanocatalyst is a novel, recoverable, and potent nanocatalyst with high selectivity for the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides. Various physicochemical techniques such as IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, EDX, mapping, TEM, and VSM were used to affirm the well synthesis of the catalyst. Oxidation of sulfides in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant and in ethanol was catalyzed by the Fe3O4@SiO2@CSH+VO3−. All sulfoxides were achieved with high efficiency and in a short time. The notable privileges of this method include facile and economic catalyst synthesis, proper catalyst durability, great performance, simple catalyst isolation, good recovery capability, at least up to 5 times without an index drop in catalytic power.

Evolutional solid phase and solid-liquid interface uranium immobilization mechanisms by nanoscale zero-valent iron and enhanced uranium stability control strategy

Uranium is a carbon dioxide free nuclear energy, and uranium-contained wastewater poses serious chronic health effects toward human. Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) separates uranium from wastewater with ultrafast kinetic, high capacity and selectivity. However, the dynamic interfacial uranium binding mechanisms and its stability, controlled by the phase transformation of nZVI, is important but poorly understood. After 120 h reaction, the fresh nZVI was oxidized and transformed to ferrihydrite and then lepidocrocite and hematite. Analysis for the structures and valence states of U, Fe species indicated that the dominate U(VI) uptake mechanism changed from Fe0 induced reduction to adsorption as nZVI transformed to iron (oxyhydr)oxides. Density functional theory calculation revealed that uranyl formed corner-sharing configurations on the surface of iron nanoparticles, and some uranium ions prefer to incorporate into the structure of lepidocrocite than hematite during the crystallization processes of ferrihydrite. Meanwhile, 100 ∼ 10000 μg/L uranyl ions were quickly captured, the residual uranium could be maintained at ∼9.31 μg/L and the content of uranium in reacted iron nanoparticles reached ∼24.16 wt%. Interestingly, the oxidization reduction potential (Eh) was a potential parameter to control uranium immobilization in the CSTR system, and the Eh control strategy could be used to increase the fraction of U(IV)/U(V), sparingly soluble and highly stable, higher than 90 %. The findings augment our understanding of U-nZVI reactions and guide nZVI technology to remedy real uranium-contained wastewater.

Synthesis and Catalytic Properties of Ruthenium and Iron Nanoparticles/Mesoporous Carbon Composites

The mesoporous carbon material of Fe-MC loaded iron nanoparticles was obtained by pyrolysis of Fe-MIL-88A under nitrogen and reducing gas atmosphere. Addition of Ru(III) in the liquid phase, Ru(III) was reduced to ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs) by iron nanoparticles (FeNPs), led to the formation of mesoporous carbon composite of Ru@Fe-MC, where 0.77 wt% of Ru was completely wrapped on the surface of iron nanoparticles. The hydrolysis performance of Ru@Fe-MC to aminoborane was studied and the results showed a good catalytic performance, where the conversion frequency (TOF) was found to be 234.3 mol H2 min-1 (mol Ru)-1, and the activation energy was 33.6 kJ / mol. The reusbility catalyst performance of Ru@Fe-MC remained highly active after ten experiments.

Theoretical Modelling of Immobilization of Cadmium and Nickel in Soil Using Iron Nanoparticles

Immobilization using zero valent using iron nanoparticles is a soil remediation technology that reduces concentrations of dissolved contaminants in soil solution. Immobilization of heavy metals in soil can be achieved through heavy metals adsorption and surface complexation reactions. These processes result in adsorption of heavy metals from solution phase and thus reducing their mobility in soil. Theoretical modelling of heavy metals, namely, cadmium and nickel, adsorption using zero valent iron nanoparticles was conducted using Visual MINTEQ. Adsorption of cadmium and nickel from soil solutions were modelled separately and when these metals were dissolved together. Results have showed that iron nanoparticles can be successfully applied as an effective adsorbent for cadmium and nickel removal from soil solution by producing insoluble compounds. After conducting the modelling of dependences of Cd+2 and Ni+2 ions adsorption on soil solution pH using iron nanoparticles, it was found that increasing pH of solution results in the increase of these ions adsorption. Adsorption of cadmium reached approximately 100% when pH ≥ 8.0, and adsorption of nickel reached approximately 100% when pH ≥ 7.0. During the modelling, it was found that adsorption of heavy metals Cd and Ni mostly occur, when one heavy metal ion is chemically adsorbed on two sorption sites. During the adsorption modelling, when Cd+2 and Ni+2 ions were dissolved together in acidic phase, it was found that adsorption is slightly lower than modelling adsorption of these metals separately. It was influenced by the competition of Cd+2 and Ni+2 ions for sorption sites on the surface of iron nanoparticles.

Siderophore coated magnetic iron nanoparticles: Rational designing of water soluble nanobiosensor for visualizing Al3+ in live organism

This article aims to establish the judicious use of iron-binding chemistry of microbial chelators in order to functionalize the surface of iron nanoparticles to develop non-toxic nanobiosensor. Anchoring a simple siderophore 2,3-dihydroxybenzoylglycine (H3L), which bears catechol and carboxyl functionalities in tandem, on to the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles has developed a unique nanobiosensor HL-FeNPs which showed highly selective and sensitive detection of Al3+ in 100% water at physiological pH. The biosensor HL-FeNPs, with 20nM limit of detection, behaves reversibly and instantly. In-vivo bio-imaging in live brine shrimp Artemia confirmed that HL-FeNPs could be used as fluorescent biomarker for Al3+ in live whole organisms. Magnetic nature of the nanosensor enabled HL-FeNPs to remove excess Al3+ by using external magnet. To our knowledge, the possibility of microbial chelator in the practical development of Al3+ selective nanobiosensor is unprecedented.

Ferrogels based on entrapped metallic iron nanoparticles in a polyacrylamide network: extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek consideration, interfacial interactions and magnetodeformation.

A new kind of ferrogel with entrapped metallic iron nanoparticles causing unusual magnetodeformation is presented. Crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAAm) based ferrogels embedded with iron nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized by free radical polymerization in aqueous medium. Spherical iron MNPs with average diameter 66 nm were synthesized by the electrical explosion of wire and modified by interfacial adsorption of linear polyacrylamide (LPAAm). Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (xDLVO) calculations based on the superposing of van der Waals, electrostatic, steric, and magnetic contributions showed that polymeric encapsulation of nanoparticles by LPAAm is one of the most suitable pathways for preparing stable aqueous dispersions of iron nanoparticles. Microcalorimetry confirmed the presence of strong interfacial adhesion forces between LPAAm chains and the surface of iron nanoparticles. By keeping the same crosslinking density of a polymer network (i.e. 100 : 1, monomer to crosslinker ratio) and varying the initial monomer concentration, an influence of the extent of polymer network reticulation on the mechanical properties and subsequently, magneto-elastic properties was demonstrated. It was found that the upper limit of the shear modulus for the synthesis of a new kind of polyacrylamide based ferrogel to exhibit any usable magnetodeformation under the application of a uniform external magnetic field of 420 mT is ca. 1 kPa. Magnetodeformation of cylindrical ferrogel samples was observed in the form of an overall volume contraction accompanied by a homogeneous decrease in all dimensions. The deformation was found to be maximum (around 10%) for the aspect ratio of 1/1 and it was lower and similar for the samples with 1/2 and 2/1 aspect ratios. Such a type of magnetic response is significantly different from the behavior observed in the existing reports on ferroelastomers.

Preparation and characterization of antibacterial Senegalia (Acacia) senegal/iron–silica bio-nanocomposites

Many studies that research bio-nanocomposites utilize techniques that involve the dispersion of strengthening components like silica, metal and metal oxides through a host biopolymer matrix. The biggest success factor for the bio-nanocomposite is having a smooth integration of organic and inorganic phases. This interattraction between the surfaces of inorganic particles and organic molecules are vital for good dispersion. In this study, a novel biodegradable antibacterial material was developed using gum arabic from Senegalia senegal (stabilizer), silica (structure reinforcer) and zero valent iron particles. Silica particles work to not only strengthen the mechanical properties of the Senegalia senegal but also prevent the accumulation of ZVI nanoparticles due to attraction between hydroxyl groups and FeO. The gum arabic/Fe–SiO2 bio-nanocomposite showed effective antibacterial property against the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli. Using Scanning electron microscopy, homogeneous dispersion and uniform particle size was viewed in the biopolymer. X-ray diffraction studies of iron particles organization in Senegalia senegal also showed that the main portion of iron was crystalline and in the form of FeO and Fe0. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to evaluate the chemical composition of the surface but no appreciable peak was measured for the iron before Ar etching. These results suggest that the surface of iron nanoparticles consist mainly of a layer of iron oxides in the form of FeO. Thermal gravimetric analysis was used to determine the thermal stability and absorbed moisture content.

Synthesis of metal-carbon nanoparticles in pulsed UV-photolysis of Fe(CO)5-CCl4 mixtures at room temperature

Synthesis of iron-carbon nanoparticles in joint photolysis of iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)5) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) has been studied. When mixtures containing iron pentacarbonyl and CCl4 are exposed to UV light, Fe(CO)5 molecules decompose to yield an atomic vapor of iron with well-known and easily controlled parameters, whereas CCl4 molecules decompose to give CCl3 radicals. A pulsed Nd:YAG laser (fourth harmonic, 266 nm) served as a source of light. The growth process of nanoparticles in condensation of supersaturated vapors was monitored by the laser extinction method; nanoparticle samples were examined with an atomic-force microscope. It was found that the concentration of the CCl4 additive affects the manner in which the optical properties of nanoparticles synthesized in a binary mixture change relative to the properties of nanoparticles synthesized in photolysis of pure Fe(CO)5, which indicates that a carbon shell grows on the surface of iron nanoparticles.

Morphology and Electronic Structure of the Oxide Shell on the Surface of Iron Nanoparticles

An iron (Fe) nanoparticle exposed to air at room temperature will be instantly covered by an oxide shell that is typically approximately 3 nm thick. The nature of this native oxide shell, in combination with the underlying Fe(0) core, determines the physical and chemical behavior of the core-shell nanoparticle. One of the challenges of characterizing core-shell nanoparticles is determining the structure of the oxide shell, that is, whether it is FeO, Fe(3)O(4), gamma-Fe(2)O(3), alpha-Fe(2)O(3), or something else. The results of prior characterization efforts, which have mostly used X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy, electron diffraction, and transmission electron microscopic imaging, have been framed in terms of one of the known Fe-oxide structures, although it is not necessarily true that the thin layer of Fe oxide is a known Fe oxide. In this Article, we probe the structure of the oxide shell on Fe nanoparticles using electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) at the oxygen (O) K-edge with a spatial resolution of several nanometers (i.e., less than that of an individual particle). We studied two types of representative particles: small particles that are fully oxidized (no Fe(0) core) and larger core-shell particles that possess an Fe core. We found that O K-edge spectra collected for the oxide shell in nanoparticles show distinct differences from those of known Fe oxides. Typically, the prepeak of the spectra collected on both the core-shell and the fully oxidized particles is weaker than that collected on standard Fe(3)O(4). Given the fact that the origin of this prepeak corresponds to the transition of the O 1s electron to the unoccupied state of O 2p hybridized with Fe 3d, a weak pre-edge peak indicates a combination of the following four factors: a higher degree of occupancy of the Fe 3d orbital; a longer Fe-O bond length; a decreased covalency of the Fe-O bond; and a measure of cation vacancies. These results suggest that the coordination configuration in the oxide shell on Fe nanoparticles is defective as compared to that of their bulk counterparts. Implications of these defective structural characteristics on the properties of core-shell structured iron nanoparticles are discussed.
