Microwave-induced enhancements in the structural, optical, dielectric, and magnetic properties of Er2O3/MgO nanocomposites

Erbium-trioxide (Er2O3) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanocomposite were effectively synthesized in the form of crystalline powder using a microwave irradiation approach. Various techniques were employed for identifying crystalline structure, FTIR fingerprint region, fluorescence emission behaviors, and surface morphology, dielectric, and magnetic properties using PXRD, FTIR spectroscopy technique, fluorescence spectroscopic technique, SEM analysis, frequency vs. dielectric constant, and MH curve analysis, respectively. Confirmation of the metal-oxygen bond such as Er2O3, and MgO was established through the analysis of stretching frequencies in the FTIR spectrum. The PXRD results using Rietveld refinement confirmed the crystalline nature of the synthesized nanoparticles, consisting of Er2O3, and MgO with unit cell compositions ~ 94.12 and ~ 5.88%, respectively. SEM imaging provided insights into the morphology of the particles, revealing a spherical shape with noticeable agglomeration. The elemental compositions such as Erbium (Er) and Oxygen (O), were validated by the EDS spectrum, confirming the successful achievement of Er2O3, and MgO nanoparticle in the synthesized composite. In addition, the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) graph illustrated the paramagnetic behavior of the doped Er2O3/MgO composite at room temperature. The thorough examination of the synthesized Er-MgO NPs, covering structural, morphological, and magnetic characteristics, contributes to a comprehensive understanding of their properties.

Optical and surface properties of Schiff base ligands and Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes

Objectives. To study the transition of electrons in 1,2-phenyl(4’-carboxy)benzylidene Schiff base ligand and transition metal ions, optical properties, as well as the surface chemistry of supported transition metals using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS); to study the roughness and morphology of the Schiff base ligand and its complexes using atomic force microscopy (AFM).Methods. DRS, AFM, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy instruments were used to identify electron transitions, optical properties, and surface morphology in Schiff base ligands and their complexes.Results. The DRS revealed the d–d transitions and charge transfer shifts of all compounds, and helped identify the structure of the ligand. One of the optical properties studied was the energy gap calculation of the ligand and its complexes. The copper complex exhibited more semiconducting behavior with surface morphology properties such as surface roughness parameters lower than those of the ligand and the cobalt complex. This can be attributed to the smaller size of the copper atom, as well as lower electron transitions compared to the cobalt complex and the square planar bonding shape.Conclusions. In Schiff base ligands, the reflectance spectrum bands reveal three electron transitions: n→π*, π→π*, and σ→σ* transitions. In cobalt complexes, four transitions are indicated: 4A2(F)→4T1(F), 4A2(F)→4T1(P), charge transfer bands, and tetrahedral geometry. Copper complexes exhibit three transitions: 2B1g→2A1g, 2B1g→2Eg, and charge transfer bands, with a square planar geometry for their structure. The energy gap calculations were 2.42, 2.29, and 2.30 eV, respectively. In the case of the SH ligands, copper complexes, and cobalt complexes, all compounds exhibited semiconductor properties. However, the complexes displayed increased conductivity due to the influence of the metal and coordination structure.

Disintegration of commercial single-use plastics from synthetic and biobased origins and effects on plant growth

Many single–use plastic (SUP) options made of synthetic polymers, bio-based materials, and blends of both are available in the market and used in large quantities. The disintegration of eleven commercial SUP, marketed in Mexico as cups and plates, was investigated in an aerobic home compost environment at a laboratory scale over 180 days. An evaluation of chemical changes, surface morphology, and thermal and mechanical properties was conducted to ascertain the original composition of SUP and the progression of disintegration in samples that are challenging to clean from soil contamination. Furthermore, the impact of residual compost on barley (Hordeum vulgare) plant growth and its correlation with the leaching of heavy metals were explored. The bio-based SUP, but not those made of expanded polystyrene foam, showed a correlation between the disintegration degree (measured by weight loss into particles <2 mm) and a decrease in functional groups (observed by FT-IR), mechanical-thermal stability loss, and surface wear over disintegration time. For instance, the highest disintegration at 180 days was approximately 70 % for wheat bran and palm leaf plates, followed by wheat plates and cellulose-PLA cups (60 %). In addition to the components listed by the manufacturers, the FT-IR and DSC analysis revealed the presence of polyethylene and polypropylene in cellulose cups and sugarcane plates. These components, impede disintegration but contribute to preserving thermal resistance and hydrophobicity during utilization. Compost derived from expanded polystyrene foam SUP, with 90 days of disintegration, was rich in zinc and chromium and significantly decrease in the root length of the barley plant compared to the control. This demonstrates the necessity of considering the impact of the leaching of additives and secondary microplastics into the environment.

Effect of Films on In‐Mold Decoration and Microcellular Foaming Injection Molding Parts: Cell Structure, Surface, Warpage, and Mechanical Properties

ABSTRACTThe in‐mold decoration and microcellular foaming injection molding (IMD‐MIM) process was proposed to solve the apparent quality problem of polypropylene in microcellular foaming injection molding. Based on physical experiments and finite element simulation, stainless steel (ST) and polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) decorative films were selected for analysis, and the influence of the type and thickness of the decorative films on the cell structure, surface morphology, warpage deformation, and mechanical properties was revealed. The results show that the surface quality of the samples coated is significantly improved, and the asymmetric temperature field caused by the films changes the structure and distribution of the cells. The cell density on the coated side is higher than that on the non‐coated side, and the average cell diameter is smaller, and the foam core layer is shifted to the coated side. The warpage caused by ST film is larger, up to 2.836 mm. With the intervention of ST film and PET film, the impact properties of the samples have little change, but the tensile and flexural properties of the foamed samples have been effectively improved. The tensile strength increased by 28.6% and 25.9%, while the flexural strength increased by 28.6% and 28.1%, respectively. This study provides new insights into the comprehensive optimization of the structure and performance of polypropylene microcellular foaming materials and provides support for the development and application of lightweight materials in the future.

Microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Al2O3/Al joint bonded by Bi2O3-B2O3-SiO2-ZnO-Al2O3 glass

A glass filler of 60Bi2O3-20B2O3-10SiO2-5ZnO-5Al2O3(mol%) was utilized to join 99Al2O3 ceramic and Al alloy 1060 at low temperature, which effectively addressed the negative impact caused by the indelible oxide film on the aluminum surface during the conventional process. Prior to the joining process, the surface morphology and thermophysical properties of the glass filler were investigated. Additionally, the wetting behavior of the glass on both the Al2O3 substrate and Al substrate was confirmed. Subsequently, the interfacial microstructure of the Al2O3/Al joints was analyzed in detail and the mechanical properties of the joints were evaluated under different temperatures and holding times. The shear strength of the joints reached a maximum value of 30.25 ± 1.0 MPa at 460 °C for 30 min. The precipitation and growth of the Bi24B2O39 phase improved the mechanical properties of the joints with increasing temperature and holding time. However, high temperatures and long holding times resulted in the precipitation of a large number of crystals in the joints, leading to embrittlement, which severely reduced the mechanical properties of the joints.

Influence of platinum content on semiconductor and electrochemical properties of materials based on titanium suboxides

The effect of platinum content on the surface morphology, phase composition and electrochemical properties of materials based on titanium suboxides was investigated. Titanium suboxides are formed at the stage of coating reduction under cathodic polarization, which allows the formation of a porous developed surface for electrodeposition of catalytic platinum layers. The main allotropic modification of TiOx in the studied composite materials is anatase, which contains particles of elemental titanium and platinum. The investigated materials are highly doped semiconductors with a high concentration of charge carriers. With an increase in the platinum content, an extreme dependence of the potential of flat zones is observed, which is associated with the formation of a composite material. The electrocatalytic activity was studied in the reactions of oxygen and hydrogen evolution. The overvoltage of oxygen production on platinum-containing materials is much lower than on the TiOx electrode. The slope of the linear dependence of the potential on the current density decreases with an increase in platinum content. The Tafel slope for the studied materials in the hydrogen evolution reaction was 160 mVdec–1 for coatings containing 0.25 mgcm–2 Pt; whereas it was equal to 42 and 43 mVdec–1 for electrodes with 0.5 and 2 mgcm–2 Pt, respectively.

Investigating the influence of RF power on the surface morphological and optical properties of sputtered TiO2 thin films

Thin films of titanium dioxide (TiO2), with thicknesses ranging from 105 to 231 nm, were deposited on glass substrates using radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering in an argon atmosphere at four distinct RF power levels: 40, 70, 100, and 130 W, with the deposition time kept constant. The crystalline structure, surface morphology and optical and semiconductor properties of the obtained films were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and UV–visible transmittance spectroscopy. These analyses revealed that the crystallinity of the films improves with increasing RF power, corresponding to an increase in film thickness. Consequently, the samples transition from poorly crystalline or amorphous structure to a monocrystalline rutile phase with a (110) texture. However, at the highest RF power studied, this texture is partially disrupted by the formation of nanocrystals with different orientations. The surface roughness exhibited multifractal characteristics, with complexity systematically decreasing and surface stiffness reducing as RF power increased. Refractive indices and optical band gap energies were determined using the Swanepoel and Tauc plot methods, respectively. The films exhibited a notable increase in the refractive index and a decrease in the optical band gap, from 3.81 eV to 3.52 eV, as the RF power was increased. This underscores the influence of RF power on the optical and semiconductor properties of TiO2 films.

Assessment of silver and graphitic carbon nitride doped cadmium selenide quantum dots as an efficient dye degrader and antibacterial agent: In silico molecular docking analysis

This study demonstrates the synthesis of co-precipitated cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) doped with (2 and 4 wt %) of silver (Ag) and fixed quantity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) for catalytic as well as antibacterial potential with molecular docking (MD) analysis. Comprehensive characterizations investigated the structural composition, surface morphology, elemental composition, and optical properties. XRD revealed the multiple phases (hexagonal and cubic) of CdSe with a notable rise in the diffraction peaks intensity upon doping. The optical studies demonstrated the range of absorption peaks, which increased upon doping confirmed through band gap energies significantly altered. TEM study revealed that a sheet of g-C3N4 overlapped with CdSe QDs, and certain nanorod-like structures emerged after Ag doping. HR-TEM was employed for the d-spacing computation of prepared samples and exposed a decreasing trend as the Ag concentration increased. Furthermore, the catalytic activity (CA) performed against RhB dye showed maximum results in the acidic medium with a higher concentration of Ag into g-C3N4 doped CdSe. The efficient bactericidal efficacy was evaluated against S. aureus bacteria with the highest inhibition zone of 13.75 mm for 4% Ag doping, which was further explained by investigating their inhibitory effects on DNA gyrase and tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase via MD.

Enhancing the Interfacial Property Between UHMWPE Fibers and Epoxy Through Polydopamine and SiO2 Surface Modification.

Here, a combination of dopamine self-polymerization and epoxy modified SiO2 (M-SiO2) grafting was proposed, with the purpose of increasing interfacial adhesion of UHMWPE fiber. Inspired by mussel adhesion, polydopamine (PDA) was deposited onto the surface of UHMWPE fiber to form a thin layer with amino and hydroxyl groups. M-SiO2 nanoparticles were then adhered to fiber surface via chemical reactions by a "two-step" or "one-step" technology. In the "two-step" technique, the M-SiO2 nanoparticles were adhered to the surface of PDA modified UHMWPE fiber via reactions between epoxy and amino groups. In the "one-step" method, M-SiO2 and dopamine were added into the UHMWPE/Tris solution at the same time. Surface morphology and thermal properties of various UHMWPE fibers were tested by SEM and TGA, respectively. Surface wettability of different UHMWPE fibers were evaluated by dynamic contact angle. The results proved that PDA and M-SiO2 were successfully adhered to the surface of UHMWPE fibers. The mechanical property of modified UHMWPE/Epoxy composites was investigated, and 43.7 % improvement was obtained, compared with unmodified UHMWPE/Epoxy composite. Additionally, micro-bond test revealed that the interfacial property (IFSS value) of modified UHMWPE fiber via the "one-step" method was 6.08 MPa, significantly higher than that of unmodified UHMWPE fiber (2.47 MPa).

Investigation of Microhardness, Microstructural, Tribological, and Thermal Properties of Al7075/TiO2/Kaoline Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites Produced by Powder Metallurgy Process

The shift from traditional, single‐component metals and alloys continues, and researchers are currently investigating alternative materials. This evolution has led to the creation of innovative materials, including hybrid metal‐matrix composites. The present study aims to investigate the microstructural, surface morphological, and thermal properties of a novel Al7075/TiO2/Kaoline hybrid metal‐matrix composite prepared using high‐energy ball milling and sintering methods. In this study, phases related to the composite components are formed depending on the milling time, no undesirable phase is formed, but the peak intensities decreas as the milling time increases. Particle size increases from 63 to 215 μm with increasing milling time. Increasing the kaoline reinforcement ratio and sintering temperature increases the microhardness from 62.27 ± 2 to 75.83 ± 2 HV, and reduces the friction coefficient from 0.82 ± 0.01 to 0.62 ± 0.01. The wear rate of the composite without kaoline addition is 2.1 (mm3 m−1) × 10−3, while with 6 wt% kaoline addition, it decreases to 1.5 (mm3 m−1) × 10−3. There are no cracks in the composite other than plastic deformation due to sintering and wear. Peaks indicating endothermic and exothermic reactions during continuous heating occurr in the 635–750 °C temperature range.

Surface Activation of Cotton Fabric with Low-Temperature Air Plasma Treatment for Metallic Printing

In this investigation, air plasma treatment was utilised to activate the surfaces of 100% grey and bleached cotton fabrics in preparation for metallic pigment printing. The study delved into the surface morphology, wettability, and surface chemistry properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed roughness and grooves in the treated samples. The contact angle witnessed a 29% and 41% increase for grey and bleached fabrics, respectively, compared to their untreated counterparts. Surface chemistry analysis using FTIR and XPS provided crucial insights into the functional polar groups, such as OH and C=O, along with significantly elevated O1 peaks in both plasma-treated grey and bleached cotton fabrics. These findings contributed to the enhanced surface free energy of the fabrics, preparing them for the subsequent pigment printing process. The study explores the impact of plasma treatment on the colour fastness of grey and bleached cotton fabrics printed with gold and silver metallic pigments. Untreated fabrics exhibited poor durability, with low colour change and staining-resistance ratings, particularly for gold pigments. Plasma treatment significantly improved colour retention, adhesion, and resistance to staining for both metallic pigments, with silver outperforming gold. Rubbing fastness tests revealed that plasma treatment moderately enhanced durability, though gold remained susceptible to friction damage. Light fastness was excellent for both pigments, and plasma treatment further improved performance. Perspiration tests showed that plasma treatment bolstered resistance, particularly for gold. These findings suggest that plasma treatment enhances the stability of metallic pigments, offering potential applications in the textile industry for improved product quality and durability.

“Investigating impact of Ni-Cd substitution on structural magnetic and optical properties of nanosize Al ferrites”

Ferrites are among the most extensively studied materials, specifically due to their amazing and diverse characteristics. Therefore, we synthesized NixCd1-xAlyFe2-yO4 (NCAF) ferrites using a microwave auto-combustion process, with x varying from 0.0 to 1.0 and y set at 0.1. We conducted a meticulous characterization of their structural, surface morphological, magnetic, molecular vibrational and optical properties. X-ray diffraction confirms the lattice parameter and a single-phase spinel structure. Rietveld refined XRD patterns identified the Fd-3m space group cubic spinel phase. HR-TEM examination shows pseudo-spherical particles with an average size of 40–45 nm. Surface topography exhibits tiny, spherical microstructures. The lognormal histogram showed an average particle size of 56.6 nm–124.8 nm, decreasing with nickel concentration. At a nickel concentration (x) of 0.6, saturation magnetization (Ms) increases and then decreases at 1.0. FTIR confirms no organic phase and spinel development. Absorption measurements determined the band gap energy, which Tauc plot revealed to be 2.5870–2.1657 eV. We used the Kubelka-Munk function to find the band gap energy in the UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), which was between 2.0027 and 1.6817 eV.

Microplastics interactions and transformations during in vitro digestion with milk

Despite increasing awareness of microplastic contamination in food, the specific interactions and transformations of microplastics during digestion remain poorly understood. The study investigates the behavior of microplastics during in vitro digestion processes and their interaction with components of milk. The in vitro digestion studies are conducted to study the changes in microplastics in simulated digestive fluids, with and without milk. The study revealed that microplastics undergo significant changes in size, surface morphology, and chemical properties when subjected to digestion with and without milk. Notably, microplastics digested with milk exhibited a 15–25% increase in aggregation due to protein corona formation, enhancing their potential for interactions within biological systems. FTIR analysis revealed the formation of OH and CO groups in digested microplastics, indicating hydrolysis and structural changes. The stronger peaks in the 1630–1650 cm−1 range suggest significant adsorption of milk proteins, highlighting the complex interactions during digestion. Additionally, the chemicals and additives leached from microplastics into digesta raising the concerns about their potential health effects. The study emphasizes the necessity for additional research and regulatory measures to address the risks associated with microplastic contamination in food.

Facile assembly of SnO2 thin film-based Al/SnO2/Al device for sensing of 260 nm UVC and 365 nm UVA radiation

An Al/SnO2/Al metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) device was formed by depositing a ∼55 nm thin film of SnO2 on Si substrate. Structural, surface morphology and optical properties of the SnO2 film were studied. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the device were recorded under the dark condition followed by 260 nm-UVC and 365 nm-UVA illumination conditions. Under the dark condition, the device shows a resistivity of 8.05 Ωcm at V=1.5 V bias voltage. The device produces nearly symmetric rectifying-type I-V characteristics under forward and reverse bias conditions. The electrical properties of the device were explained using back-to-back Schottky diode model. Under the dark condition, the ideality factor of the junction under forward and reverse bias were estimated to be 1.08 and 1.72 respectively. The external quantum efficiency of the device under UVC was found to be ∼518.72 % and specific detectivity reached as high as 1.03×109 Jones at 2.0 V with a response time of ∼1 s. The device showed a high signal-to-noise ratio between 0.5 and 1.5 V bias voltages. The values of the ideality factor being greater than 1 was attributed to the presence of point defects in the SnO2 layer as verified by photoluminescence study. This study reveals that the device could be used as a UVC and UVA sensor at a relatively low bias voltage of ∼1.5 V.

Porous microsphere LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 electrode modified by Na2CO3: Enhanced performance of low temperature solid oxide fuel cells

LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCAL) has been extensively adopted as symmetric electrode for low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) based on oxide semiconductor electrolytes. However, the performance of NCAL electrode depend on material source, morphology and operating conditions. In this study, commercial microsphere NCAL is successfully modified with Na2CO3 by a wet chemical method. The crystal structure, surface morphology, elemental analysis, surface chemistry and electrochemical properties of NCAL modified by Na2CO3 (NCALN) are characterized by various techniques. When Na2CO3 content in NCALN is 5 wt% and 10 wt%, the CeO2 electrolyte SOFCs with NCALN symmetric electrode show significantly superior performance to that with NCAL symmetric electrode. The optimal heterostructure electrode NCALN5 exhibits a peak power density of 805 mW cm−2 and a polarization resistance of 0.237 Ω cm2 at 550 °C, which is 17 % higher and 21 % lower than those of NCAL electrode. Compared with NCAL electrode, NCALN5 electrode enhances the catalytic activities to both hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) but contributes more to ORR than HOR, especially at low temperatures. These results clearly demonstrate NCALN heterostructure composites are promising electrode materials for low temperature SOFCs.

Amelioration of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis by exogenous soluble PD-L1 is associated with restraining dendritic cell maturation and CCR7-mediated migration

Dendritic cells (DCs) orchestrate both immune activation and immune tolerance in multiple sclerosis (MS). Manipulating the phenotypes and functions of DCs to boost their tolerogenic potential is an appealing strategy for treating MS and its animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) delivers the immunoinhibitory signals by interacting with PD-1 ligand 1 (PD-L1), which plays a critical role in maintaining immune tolerance. So far, the effects of PD-1/PD-L1 signalling activation on DCs in EAE are poorly understood. Here, the administration of soluble PD-L1 (sPD-L1) protein significantly alleviated the clinical symptoms of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-induced EAE, and inhibited the expression of cluster of differentiation (CD)86, C-C motif chemokine receptor 7 (CCR7) as well as CCR7-mediated trafficking of splenic DCs, accompanied by enhancing their phagocytosis. The impact of sPD-L1 on the surface morphology and mechanical properties of DCs was investigated at the nanoscale, using scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. The treatment of sPD-L1 was found to mitigate morphological maturation and biomechanical alterations, specifically in terms of adhesion and elasticity, in bone marrow-derived DCs from EAE. Taken together, our findings suggest that application of exogenous sPD-L1 has a marked suppressive effect on the maturation and migration of DCs in EAE. PD-L1 administration may be a promising therapy for EAE and for MS in the future.

Correlation of residual stress on piezoresistive properties of boron-doped diamond films

To investigate the influence of residual stress on the piezoresistive behavior of boron-doped diamond (BDD) films, BDD films with varying doping concentrations were synthesized using a hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) system on silicon and diamond substrates. The relationship between the surface morphology, structural composition, resistivity, and piezoresistive properties of BDD electrodes was examined, along with an in-depth analysis of the impact of boron doping level on these properties. The microstructure and bonding state of the BDD films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman spectroscopy. The piezoresistive properties of the BDD films were evaluated employing a cantilever beam bending method. Our findings demonstrate that the level of boron doping not only affects resistivity but also directly influences residual stress in BDD films, both factors having an impact on their piezoresistive properties. Despite significantly larger grain sizes observed in BDD films grown on diamond substrates compared to those grown on silicon substrates at identical boron doping concentrations, they exhibit consistent variations in residual stress and gauge factor (GF) values. With increasing doping levels, the absolute residual stress decreases initially before increasing again; moreover, at 2000 ppm doping level, it transitions from compressive to tensile stress. The GF value is closely associated with both the magnitude and type of residual stress. By utilizing a doping concentration of 2000 ppm for growth on diamond substrates, we achieved a peak GF value of 257 for BDD films which highlights their promising potential for pressure sensor applications.

Interface-driven microwave absorption enhancement in Mn-optimized Co2FeAl1-xMnx Heusler alloys

To address the urgent need for efficient and stable electromagnetic wave absorbing materials for electromagnetic interference (EMI) protection, we synthesized Co2FeAl1−xMnx Heusler soft magnetic alloys using a high-energy planetary ball milling method. We comprehensively analyzed their structural characteristics, surface morphology, magnetic properties, and electromagnetic parameters to explore their potential in electromagnetic wave absorption. The results show that incorporating manganese (Mn) significantly changes the alloys' crystal structure, surface morphology, and magnetic properties, greatly enhancing their wave absorption performance. The Mn doping specifically alters the surface morphology, which plays a crucial role in influencing the wave absorption characteristics of the Heusler alloys. When the Mn content increased to 25 %, the sample exhibits superior wave absorption, achieving the maximum reflection loss of −44.83 dB at 13.68 GHz with a thickness of 1.5 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.52 GHz. With a significant increase in the aspect ratio and noticeable changes in surface morphology, the sample with 75 % Mn content shows exceptional performance with an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.68 GHz, representing the highest effective absorption bandwidth in single-phase Heusler alloys. The Mn doping strategy effectively improves the material's impedance matching by adjusting its permittivity and permeability, facilitating multiple polarization relaxation mechanisms and significantly enhancing the alloys' electromagnetic wave absorption efficiency. Our study provides detailed experimental data for optimizing the electromagnetic wave absorption characteristics of Heusler alloys, verifies their practical application potential, and paves the way for developing new high-performance electromagnetic wave absorbing materials.

Dy3+ doped Zn0.66Mg0.3Al2O4 nanophosphor for high dose radiation thermoluminescence dosimetric applications

Zinc Magnesium Aluminate doped with Dysprosium (Zn (1-x-y) Mg(y)Al2O4:x Dy (x=0.04 and y=0.3 mol%)) was prepared using the solution combustion synthesis method. The prepared phosphor was characterized using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared, respectively, to study crystal structure, surface morphology, and vibrational properties. The thermoluminescence peak temperatures were 250°C, 248°C, and 246°C at irradiating doses of 600–1000 Gy, respectively. Through the computation of the activation energy (E), order of kinetics (b), and frequency factor (s−1), the kinetic parameters were assessed using the TL glow curve. It is observed from the TL dose-response curve that the intensity rises nearly linearly for all doses between 600 and 1000 Gy. Nanophosphor Zn0.66Mg0.3Al2O4:0.04Dy shows almost linear dose-response for a dose range of 600–1000 Gy and an optimum activation energy (E) of 0.93–0.97 eV, which makes it suitable for high-dose radiation thermoluminescence dosimetric applications.
